- 0:03Speaker 1: All right, everyone, welcome in Toto another episode, but by
- 0:05Speaker 1: order the faithfuls Dancing with the Stars the next pro edition.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Wells Adams here not alongside Dolores Catana. She's off doing
- 0:12Speaker 1: housewives stuff. But don't worry. We have something that's completely
- 0:16Speaker 1: qualified to talk about this show because she starred on
- 0:18Speaker 1: episode two. Rit Stewart is our guest today. She started
- 0:21Speaker 1: dancing at the age of three. Before Dancing with the Stars,
- 0:24Speaker 1: she built an impressive resume. She danced in all three
- 0:28Speaker 1: high school musical films and spent three years as a
- 0:31Speaker 1: backup dancer for Katie Perry, appearing in the Super Bowl
- 0:33Speaker 1: halftime show with her. She also performed alongside Janet Jackson
- 0:36Speaker 1: and Danielvada. That's pretty awesome. She joined Dancing with the
- 0:39Speaker 1: Star as a TRUP member and was promoted to pro
- 0:41Speaker 1: dancer in season twenty nine back in twenty twenty, becoming
- 0:45Speaker 1: the first black female pro in the show's history. Outside
- 0:48Speaker 1: of her Dancing with the Stars career, she's president of
- 0:50Speaker 1: Share the Movement, a nonprofit that makes dance accessible to
- 0:54Speaker 1: bypock youth. She's married to her former Dancing with the
- 0:57Speaker 1: Stars celebrity partner, Daniel Durant. Please, welcome to the show.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Fritz Stewart, Britt, thank you so much for coming on
- 1:04Speaker 1: the show.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, absolutely, thank you. That was quite a
- 1:10Speaker 2: That was quinde an introduction. Thank you.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Did I miss anything?
- 1:14Speaker 2: No, no, you know you didn't. That you basically summed
- 1:18Speaker 2: up my entire life. Thank you so much.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Now, So you made history as the first black female
- 1:26Speaker 1: pro on Dancing with the Stars. What was that moment like,
- 1:29Speaker 1: because I imagine it was a big achievement, but then also
- 1:34Speaker 1: something that you felt like probably shouldn't have been done
- 1:36Speaker 1: long before you.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yes, all of those things giving that moment. I mean
- 1:41Speaker 2: I remember getting that call and I think I was
- 1:45Speaker 2: so just in awe. I was so surprised when the
- 1:50Speaker 2: casting director Dena Katz called me, I was just like, okay, yeah, yeah,
- 1:55Speaker 2: I'll do it. I'll yes, I would love to be pro.
- 1:59Speaker 2: And I I'm sure she was probably like is this
- 2:01Speaker 2: girl excited? Is she okay? But I was just you know, again,
- 2:06Speaker 2: like I said, I was an awe And then I
- 2:07Speaker 2: called my mom afterwards and then just completely broke down
- 2:10Speaker 2: in tears and excitement and all the things. And it's
- 2:16Speaker 2: it's a big responsibility to represent your community being the
- 2:21Speaker 2: only one, and I put a lot of accountability on
- 2:25Speaker 2: myself in everything that I do to be that representation
- 2:30Speaker 2: and to have success on the show, not only for myself,
- 2:34Speaker 2: but for other little black girls that can see themselves
- 2:37Speaker 2: in me looking at you know, the TV screen every Tuesday.
- 2:42Speaker 2: And you know, it's interesting that you said, oh, like,
- 2:44Speaker 2: why did it not happen before me? And I know
- 2:48Speaker 2: a lot of people think it's you know, it's shocking
- 2:53Speaker 2: that I was the first black female pro you know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: at that point for twenty eight seasons, there was no
- 2:59Speaker 2: one else like me, but ballroom dance as a sport,
- 3:05Speaker 2: and in that community, it's actually not very diverse. I
- 3:11Speaker 2: actually didn't grow up doing ballroom. It wasn't really accessible
- 3:16Speaker 2: to me in my area where I grew up. I
- 3:19Speaker 2: grew up in Denver, Colorado, but it just it was
- 3:23Speaker 2: very separate. You kind of either went the classical route
- 3:26Speaker 2: of ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, or you did ballroom, or
- 3:32Speaker 2: you grew up in Utah, which a lot of our
- 3:34Speaker 2: growths are from Utah, and then you and then you
- 3:37Speaker 2: have access to both. So you know, it's part of
- 3:41Speaker 2: the reason why I started my nonprofit share the movement,
- 3:44Speaker 2: just to create dance, to have it be accessible for everyone,
- 3:48Speaker 2: even if you don't know if a certain style is
- 3:51Speaker 2: an option. And then also just spreading awareness that a
- 3:55Speaker 2: lot of ballroom dance styles are actually they're rooted in
- 3:58Speaker 2: black and brown culture. So just creating more information and knowledge.
- 4:04Speaker 2: And I hope I'm not the last black female. I
- 4:07Speaker 2: hope I'm not the only black female. I would love
- 4:09Speaker 2: to see more representation.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Well, look, there's a lot of diversity in this new
- 4:13Speaker 1: show with Finding an Next Pro, and so that's got
- 4:16Speaker 1: to be kind of that's going to make you feel
- 4:20Speaker 1: kind of good doing what you do and then seeing
- 4:23Speaker 1: you know, like all these different ethnicities and such a
- 4:28Speaker 1: diverse cast that you know is going to be on
- 4:32Speaker 1: the show at some like someone's going to win and
- 4:34Speaker 1: then be on Dancing with the Stars. I wonder, as
- 4:37Speaker 1: someone who is one of the dancers, how you felt
- 4:42Speaker 1: about a show that effectively is saying, well, we're probably
- 4:45Speaker 1: going to fire one of you and replace you with them, right.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Is that the idea? Or is someone like leaving to
- 4:51Speaker 1: go to have a baby and then they'll be a
- 4:53Speaker 1: spot available.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You know? The idea of finding the Next Pro is
- 5:00Speaker 2: really about just finding another generation. And I chose that
- 5:04Speaker 2: word very specifically, another generation, not a new It is
- 5:08Speaker 2: a new generation. But it was made very clear to
- 5:11Speaker 2: the existing pros that this show is not meant to
- 5:15Speaker 2: replace one of us. It's just to expand the family
- 5:20Speaker 2: and expand our audience and have Dancing with the Stars
- 5:24Speaker 2: on our TV screens in a new and refreshing way.
- 5:29Speaker 2: And you know, of course, I'm sure in the back
- 5:32Speaker 2: of all of our minds we were you know, oh
- 5:34Speaker 2: my goodness. Well, you know, this is a lot of us,
- 5:39Speaker 2: you know, I just got married, a lot of us
- 5:40Speaker 2: are thinking about you know, family and different things, and
- 5:43Speaker 2: our lives have beautifully evolved together as a cast, and
- 5:50Speaker 2: so I think it's amazing that we're looking to expand
- 5:54Speaker 2: our Dancing with the Stars family with this new TV show.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And then on top of that, it is incredible that
- 6:02Speaker 2: they have pros involved in the show. We are representing
- 6:10Speaker 2: ourselves and being able to share that knowledge and that
- 6:14Speaker 2: wisdom and that advice as mentors and guest judges on
- 6:18Speaker 2: the show for these contestants. It's you know, I'm really
- 6:21Speaker 2: grateful that I had that opportunity and that ABC BBC
- 6:26Speaker 2: thought about that and how important it was for our involvement.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I really like this show, and I think I might
- 6:33Speaker 1: like it more than Dancing with the Stars because I
- 6:36Speaker 1: stop it. Hear me out, hear me out. Okay, So
- 6:41Speaker 1: when I'm watching Dancing with the Stars, you know, there's
- 6:42Speaker 1: like some seven foot tall NBA player that like can't
- 6:45Speaker 1: dance and he's like tripping over the place, and I'm like,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I don't know what, I don't know what I'm watching,
- 6:48Speaker 1: But this show everyone is so good that like I'm like,
- 6:53Speaker 1: everyone's good, you know, like they're fantastic. But what's really
- 6:56Speaker 1: really fun about the pros coming in to guest judge
- 7:01Speaker 1: is that you see that there is a huge chasm
- 7:05Speaker 1: between what they're doing and what you guys are doing,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and it shows how much how much growth whoever wins
- 7:12Speaker 1: is going to have to make to get to your level.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Case in point, you know, your dance with the group
- 7:16Speaker 1: was absolutely amazing. I thought Jenna's this last week was
- 7:20Speaker 1: ridiculous and like she wasn't even sweating at all. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: wanted to ask you for like for the dance and
- 7:28Speaker 1: like so like Jenna's was like all about chemistry, right,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and yours was all about group dance. Did you have
- 7:35Speaker 1: any say in like what you wanted to mentor in
- 7:39Speaker 1: and judge for or is it like, you're really good
- 7:41Speaker 1: at group so we want you to do a group thing,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and Jenna's really good at chemistry, so like, how did that?
- 7:46Speaker 1: How did that casting work?
- 7:49Speaker 2: In many different ways, I wouldn't necessarily say that we
- 7:52Speaker 2: had a say in which theme for which episode we
- 7:57Speaker 2: were involved in, And there was a lot of parts
- 8:00Speaker 2: for four of us, for Brandon, myself, Jenna, and Daniella.
- 8:07Speaker 2: We were we were on tour at the same time,
- 8:10Speaker 2: so it was also navigating schedules and who was available
- 8:14Speaker 2: for which episode and when, and then again taking a
- 8:19Speaker 2: deeper look at who we are as pros on the
- 8:22Speaker 2: show and what we're known for. And I've been able
- 8:26Speaker 2: to have the opportunity to choreograph a lot of opening
- 8:29Speaker 2: numbers and a lot of group choreography on the TV
- 8:32Speaker 2: show and on the tour as well. So I actually
- 8:36Speaker 2: think for me having group choreography was the perfect fit
- 8:40Speaker 2: for myself. And then you know, Jenna's episode that aired
- 8:44Speaker 2: this week, chemistry could not be more perfect for her.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I was watching the episode and I was like, I
- 8:52Speaker 2: already knew this, but it is so clear that Jenna
- 8:55Speaker 2: Johnson could have chemistry with a rock like it does
- 8:57Speaker 2: not matter. She just zudes that sort of you know,
- 9:02Speaker 2: passion and sex, appeal and emotion and and she could
- 9:08Speaker 2: have chemistry with anyone. So for her to be able
- 9:10Speaker 2: to mentor the contestants through that was perfection.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Can we talk about your episode? That was the group episode,
- 9:18Speaker 1: and that was the one where effectively Natalie kind of
- 9:22Speaker 1: had to self eliminate correct, yes, correct, Okay, So I
- 9:26Speaker 1: had a theory that that once that happened, it knocked
- 9:32Speaker 1: off the numbers and then they had to change it
- 9:34Speaker 1: into two groups and that was like a game time decision.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Is that what happened?
- 9:40Speaker 2: Actually, she was unable to to participate in any of
- 9:46Speaker 2: the challenges that way, and so ultimately that is why
- 9:52Speaker 2: she went home, and her health was you know, obviously
- 9:57Speaker 2: had a take priority with that horrible act. I mean,
- 10:00Speaker 2: I guess it wasn't that horrible.
- 10:01Speaker 1: She was, Okay.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I don't want to like over dramatize it, because things
- 10:07Speaker 2: like that actually happen all the time in our sport,
- 10:11Speaker 2: in our art form. I feel like sometimes people see
- 10:14Speaker 2: dance as an art, which it is, but It is
- 10:16Speaker 2: also very it's very physical and especially connection and dancing
- 10:21Speaker 2: with other people, whether it be in a group or
- 10:24Speaker 2: in a partnership, you can get elbows, you know, fingers
- 10:27Speaker 2: in the eye, exactly what happened to Natalie, and so
- 10:30Speaker 2: you know, I hate that that happened, but it's also
- 10:33Speaker 2: a very realistic representation of what we go through all
- 10:40Speaker 2: the time. I remember, I'll say a quick story about this,
- 10:44Speaker 2: super quick. I remember Derek Huff was doing a group dance.
- 10:49Speaker 2: It was Michael Bluebley night. I believe that was season
- 10:52Speaker 2: thirty one, and he was choreographing the routine and we
- 10:56Speaker 2: were doing camera blocking, which is the day before live show,
- 11:00Speaker 2: and it's the chance for the cameras for the director
- 11:04Speaker 2: to put everything on camera before the live show, because
- 11:06Speaker 2: once it's live, you have one chance and that is it.
- 11:09Speaker 2: And things move very very quickly. And there was this
- 11:13Speaker 2: one part of the choreography that was all happening in
- 11:16Speaker 2: a circle and Derek and Haley we're doing this beautiful
- 11:21Speaker 2: lift in the middle of the circle and I believe
- 11:26Speaker 2: they had either I'm trying to remember my timeline, they
- 11:30Speaker 2: had just gotten engaged. So she was engaged and that
- 11:32Speaker 2: ring is gorgeous and beautiful and big, and she hit
- 11:37Speaker 2: me in the face with the ring on accident, and
- 11:41Speaker 2: you know, we laughed because she's my best friend. And
- 11:43Speaker 2: she was like, well, I guess if I would have
- 11:45Speaker 2: hit anyone, I don't feel quite as bad because it's you.
- 11:48Speaker 2: And I was like, I know, it's fine, and so
- 11:50Speaker 2: it happens all the time. But the really everyone was
- 11:55Speaker 2: aware that the teams would have been uneven as she
- 11:59Speaker 2: was meant to participate in the whole episode and then
- 12:02Speaker 2: just was unable to.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I was thinking that like, once she left, then
- 12:06Speaker 1: all of a sudden, it makes it even so it's
- 12:09Speaker 1: easier to split them up, because I felt like it
- 12:12Speaker 1: would have been unfair if she was still there, because
- 12:15Speaker 1: one team would have one more person and then also
- 12:17Speaker 1: not a partner to dance with. I don't know. This
- 12:19Speaker 1: is like the producer of Brain and me being like,
- 12:21Speaker 1: I bet you they had to make a like a
- 12:23Speaker 1: game time decision here. But I don't want to get
- 12:25Speaker 1: two in the weeds of the producer real aspect of it.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I do want to ask you when it comes to
- 12:32Speaker 1: casting for Dancing with the Stars, you know, when I
- 12:35Speaker 1: think of like doing Bachelor or Bachelor in Paradise. We
- 12:39Speaker 1: do a thing where you really want to match up
- 12:42Speaker 1: personalities for the cast with our cast producers. Right, Like
- 12:47Speaker 1: you want the jocks to be with the guys who
- 12:49Speaker 1: are also jocks because then they can sit down and
- 12:52Speaker 1: really have a connection. You want the person who's really
- 12:55Speaker 1: sensitive to be with the person, you know, Like it
- 12:58Speaker 1: makes sense to find like my did people with dancing.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Obviously it's so much different, but I imagine maybe not
- 13:06Speaker 1: so much is do you guys have a say in
- 13:10Speaker 1: like who your celeb is gonna be or a preference
- 13:13Speaker 1: of like the type of person you want to dance
- 13:15Speaker 1: with before the show starts.
- 13:17Speaker 2: That is the one thing that we have complete no
- 13:22Speaker 2: control over. Yeah again, and it's you know, it's really
- 13:28Speaker 2: it is a realistic thing that you see on our show.
- 13:32Speaker 2: We are the celebrities that join each and every season.
- 13:37Speaker 2: They can request for who they would like to dance with,
- 13:41Speaker 2: or maybe they have some favorites or whatever. But when
- 13:44Speaker 2: they walk into that room, that is the first time
- 13:46Speaker 2: that they're finding out who their pro partner is. And
- 13:49Speaker 2: then for the pros. You know, last year, I found
- 13:54Speaker 2: out who my partner was on my way to the studio.
- 13:56Speaker 2: So about thirty minutes before I met Baron Davis. And
- 14:00Speaker 2: you know, they do that for many different reasons. They
- 14:02Speaker 2: give they give us a little bit of a heads
- 14:04Speaker 2: up so someone doesn't walk into the room and we're like,
- 14:07Speaker 2: I mean that would be me. I'm not very good
- 14:09Speaker 2: at pop culture. I know is like, that would be me.
- 14:13Speaker 2: So they do give us a who are you?
- 14:18Speaker 1: Where are you?
- 14:19Speaker 2: From your story? So they do give the pros a
- 14:21Speaker 2: little bit of a heads up, but not more than
- 14:25Speaker 2: you know, the night before, like an hour before, and
- 14:28Speaker 2: so yeah, that is very much out of our control.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And I think as a group, we all think casting
- 14:37Speaker 2: has to do with many different things. Yes, personality, Sometimes
- 14:40Speaker 2: it's height, especially for some people. But then you also
- 14:45Speaker 2: have Daniella, who is one of the shorter girls, and
- 14:48Speaker 2: then she's been paired with Dwight Howard and Emon Schumpert,
- 14:52Speaker 2: so that is yeah, it's it's really up to casting
- 14:57Speaker 2: and the producers and we show up and do the
- 15:00Speaker 2: best that we can with who we're given each year.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Dina Kats she's the one who's doing all this, She's
- 15:06Speaker 1: pulling the strings. Last thing about the you know your
- 15:10Speaker 1: celeb partner, you know you married your celeb partner. I
- 15:15Speaker 1: guess my question is did you request them beforehand, Like
- 15:20Speaker 1: was it like they're cute or was it something that
- 15:25Speaker 1: you immediately had chemistry or was it something that you
- 15:28Speaker 1: waited until after the show to really explore. Take me
- 15:32Speaker 1: down that rogue. That's very interesting.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Absolutely. So we Daniel and I we started dating after
- 15:39Speaker 2: the show, okay, and it was very much a teammate
- 15:46Speaker 2: turns into friendship. And then as the season progressed, progressed,
- 15:52Speaker 2: you know, I was like, oh, I think I'm thinking
- 15:55Speaker 2: about him often, but I was in the mindset of,
- 15:58Speaker 2: you know, my Dancing with the Star our season. I'm like,
- 16:01Speaker 2: when I first met, I knew, I knew we had chemistry,
- 16:04Speaker 2: But in my mind, I was like, this is gonna
- 16:06Speaker 2: be great so far, because you want to have chemistry
- 16:10Speaker 2: with your dance partner and your partner for the season,
- 16:14Speaker 2: because sometimes you can see when a pro and their
- 16:18Speaker 2: stubdy partner might not mesh. And I think it's pretty clear.
- 16:23Speaker 2: So I knew we had chemistry. We both knew that
- 16:28Speaker 2: we were really enjoying each other's time, but we didn't
- 16:31Speaker 2: really realize that it was much more than that until
- 16:37Speaker 2: we got eliminated and we didn't see each other. We
- 16:40Speaker 2: got eliminated and during semi finals, so there was only
- 16:43Speaker 2: like one week left of the season. And you have
- 16:47Speaker 2: to remember, when you start Dancing with the Stars, as
- 16:50Speaker 2: soon as you meet your partner, there are really no
- 16:55Speaker 2: days off, like you can take a day off in
- 16:57Speaker 2: the week. But most of us are pretty crazy and competitive,
- 17:01Speaker 2: and we're like, we got there's no time to learn
- 17:04Speaker 2: a whole technique, to learn a new choreography and new dance,
- 17:06Speaker 2: all the things. There's just no time in the season.
- 17:10Speaker 2: And so Daniel and I went from being strangers to
- 17:13Speaker 2: then seeing each other every single day, and you build this,
- 17:18Speaker 2: you know, potentially wonderful friendship, wonderful relationship with who your
- 17:23Speaker 2: partner is. I think that's also why there are so
- 17:25Speaker 2: many beautiful friendships that come out of the show as well.
- 17:29Speaker 2: And so then we got eliminated, and then we didn't
- 17:31Speaker 2: see each other, and then I remember we were like
- 17:33Speaker 2: texting and we were both like, oh, wow, this is
- 17:37Speaker 2: it actually feels a bit strange that we're not seeing
- 17:40Speaker 2: each other, and then we realized that it was more
- 17:44Speaker 2: than a friendship. But even then still nothing happened until
- 17:50Speaker 2: a bit later and we started dating, and then once
- 17:54Speaker 2: we started dating, it just really like fell into this
- 17:59Speaker 2: beautiful relation and ship, you know, that turned into an engagement.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Now we're like coming up on our one year anniversary,
- 18:08Speaker 2: and it was just this beautiful we like fell into
- 18:11Speaker 2: it really And there was also a bit of like
- 18:15Speaker 2: hesitancy as well. I think in the beginning, you know,
- 18:19Speaker 2: I was always that person that was like, I'm never
- 18:21Speaker 2: going to date my celebrity partner. And Daniel's an actor
- 18:26Speaker 2: and so he's used to having chemistry with people that
- 18:29Speaker 2: he works with. But then there's that very clear boundary
- 18:33Speaker 2: and for us, it was just like it was undeniable.
- 18:38Speaker 2: That's so that's that, that's the story.
- 18:40Speaker 1: There was a moment in your episode, episode two where
- 18:43Speaker 1: I think it was Eric was talking to someone and
- 18:45Speaker 1: saying how much he admired you and liked you, And
- 18:49Speaker 1: I was like, does this dude know that she's married,
- 18:52Speaker 1: like bump the brakes, my guy? Did you feel that
- 18:54Speaker 1: way or was he just like saying out how much
- 18:56Speaker 1: she like appreciates you as a dancer.
- 18:59Speaker 2: It was hilarious. When I saw the episode, I actually
- 19:02Speaker 2: rewound it. Daniel and I were watching it together because
- 19:04Speaker 2: I was like, did he say what I think he
- 19:06Speaker 2: just said. When we were in the studio, there was
- 19:09Speaker 2: no you know, obvious signs that he was like looking
- 19:13Speaker 2: at me or anything like that, and of course I
- 19:16Speaker 2: was very flattered. But yes, again, he must not know
- 19:20Speaker 2: that I'm married.
- 19:21Speaker 1: It was Daniel, Who is this guy funny?
- 19:26Speaker 2: Daniel's like, yeah, he takes it as a compliment too.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel that. Let's talk about choreography. I don't understand, Like,
- 19:49Speaker 1: obviously it's your job and you've been doing it forever,
- 19:51Speaker 1: but like, I don't understand your guys' ability to one
- 19:57Speaker 1: create choreography kind of like on the fly seemingly, and
- 20:01Speaker 1: then you know, for Dancing with the Stars, being able
- 20:03Speaker 1: to teach someone who really has no business doing this
- 20:08Speaker 1: and make it seem so effortless. Like I recognize that
- 20:12Speaker 1: you're in the studio so much with them and you're
- 20:15Speaker 1: working so hard, but like, just take us through that process,
- 20:19Speaker 1: because I feel like it's got to be so draining
- 20:21Speaker 1: having to deal with someone who's not a professional trying
- 20:25Speaker 1: to show them all these steps.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely a process, and us as pros. It's
- 20:33Speaker 2: a skill that is very unique to Dancing with the Stars,
- 20:39Speaker 2: like you could go and choreograph something else, and you're
- 20:43Speaker 2: typically choreographing for someone that's either very skilled and what
- 20:50Speaker 2: you're choreographing for, or maybe you're choreographing for an actor
- 20:53Speaker 2: who has no dance ability, but it's a very niche
- 20:56Speaker 2: scene that is catered to them. And dancing with the stars,
- 21:01Speaker 2: you have to put your celebrity through whatever dance style
- 21:05Speaker 2: it is, and you have to teach them the technique.
- 21:08Speaker 2: It's a competition at the end of the day, and
- 21:10Speaker 2: you want to be creative and make them look good
- 21:12Speaker 2: and you know, in a matter of days, and so
- 21:15Speaker 2: it's definitely a skill set that you have to have
- 21:18Speaker 2: as a pro. It takes a lot of patience, It
- 21:21Speaker 2: takes a lot of You can't have an ego, you know,
- 21:25Speaker 2: you can't really be precious about your choreography. I've had
- 21:28Speaker 2: times where I've prepped an entire dance that after working
- 21:34Speaker 2: with my celebrity, I know their strengths, I know their weaknesses.
- 21:37Speaker 2: I think that this, you know, piece of choreography is
- 21:40Speaker 2: going to be perfect with them, and I start to
- 21:42Speaker 2: teach it and nothing works and I have to change
- 21:45Speaker 2: everything on the spot. And that happens more than you think.
- 21:50Speaker 2: And I just think it's not having that ego to
- 21:53Speaker 2: be able to, you know, look at your piece of
- 21:57Speaker 2: work and be able to make it for them. I
- 22:01Speaker 2: always say, I believe the best choreographers are not the
- 22:06Speaker 2: choreographers that come up with the cool moves that you know,
- 22:09Speaker 2: some people can do. I think it's when you can
- 22:12Speaker 2: make whoever you're working with shine.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:15Speaker 2: So it is definitely a unique experience and it's something
- 22:20Speaker 2: that the contestants on Next Pro will have to get
- 22:25Speaker 2: used to and will have to learn because it's not
- 22:28Speaker 2: something that you can really teach. You have to experience
- 22:32Speaker 2: it and then be open and then you know, be
- 22:36Speaker 2: patient and hopefully hopefully they'll be okay.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Well it's interesting because they're dancing with each other
- 22:45Speaker 1: and they're all, you know, the best of the best,
- 22:49Speaker 1: and they're even struggling with it, like I you know,
- 22:51Speaker 1: I think Nina has had some struggles dancing with her partner.
- 22:58Speaker 1: I think Benji kind of left because of because of that.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Tristan's also had that issue. And if you're if you're
- 23:05Speaker 1: struggling with someone who is so good, imagine what the
- 23:08Speaker 1: struggle is going to be like when someone had you
- 23:10Speaker 1: know when you have a NFL running back who's never
- 23:14Speaker 1: done a chanchot on his life, you know, like, so yeah,
- 23:17Speaker 1: it's it's going to be interesting to see that jump
- 23:20Speaker 1: from one to the other. Just really quick. Last question.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I'm just so so interested in like the beats of
- 23:25Speaker 1: all this right, Like, so you're you're you're working out
- 23:29Speaker 1: and doing choreography every single day. So is the first
- 23:32Speaker 1: day you're like, Okay, we're going to learn like this
- 23:35Speaker 1: first verse, and then once we get that down tomorrow
- 23:38Speaker 1: we'll work on the second verse. And then the next
- 23:41Speaker 1: day we'll work on this next thing, and then the
- 23:43Speaker 1: last day will maybe make sure everything's come together. How
- 23:47Speaker 1: does it work? We're the beats, you know what.
- 23:49Speaker 2: It's very it's for me, it's very dependent on who
- 23:52Speaker 2: my partner is because everybody has a different learning style.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Sometimes someone needs to just start from the all the
- 24:01Speaker 2: way through the end, because if I teach it in
- 24:03Speaker 2: sections or broken up, they'll get confused about the sequencing
- 24:07Speaker 2: and where things go. And again, Dance with the Stars
- 24:10Speaker 2: is so fast that you really don't have much time
- 24:14Speaker 2: and they need to get it pretty quickly, or if
- 24:16Speaker 2: they don't, you have to make the decision on the fly. Okay,
- 24:19Speaker 2: this is not working, I need to change it immediately.
- 24:22Speaker 2: So it really depends on who my partner is. Sometimes
- 24:27Speaker 2: I'll also teach like maybe let's say, like the most
- 24:31Speaker 2: difficult section in the piece of choreography, I'll teach that
- 24:34Speaker 2: first so I can get a sense of what's working
- 24:37Speaker 2: on their body and what's not, and then that can
- 24:40Speaker 2: dictate the rest of the choreography or how I teach
- 24:44Speaker 2: the rest of the dance. So it really depends on
- 24:46Speaker 2: who my partner is, and I always have to be
- 24:49Speaker 2: flexible about the way that I teach it. But yeah,
- 24:54Speaker 2: it depends. Like with Daniel, because he's deaf and he
- 24:59Speaker 2: can't hear the music, it was important for him to
- 25:01Speaker 2: learn the full picture right away, which was hard for me.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I'm a virgo, so I'm like, we need to get
- 25:10Speaker 2: the technique in the details and like all of these
- 25:13Speaker 2: things right away. Let's go slow and very detailed and slow.
- 25:16Speaker 2: And for him, he was like, I need to understand
- 25:19Speaker 2: full picture. I need to understand what the tempo is,
- 25:22Speaker 2: what the rhythm is, so then he can start to
- 25:27Speaker 2: understand everything from top to bottom and then go into
- 25:30Speaker 2: the details. So it just depends on who it is.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Can he experience music through like the vibration of it
- 25:36Speaker 1: in like on the ground or in the air, Like,
- 25:39Speaker 1: how does that work? That's that's going to be so hard.
- 25:43Speaker 1: You can't even hear the click track coming in, right,
- 25:45Speaker 1: So yeah, can he feel like the music a little bit?
- 25:49Speaker 2: So, yes, he can feel the bass, especially if the
- 25:53Speaker 2: bass is really heavy. And I worked during that season.
- 25:58Speaker 2: I worked very closely with the music team to make
- 26:00Speaker 2: make sure that almost all of our music either had
- 26:04Speaker 2: a heavy bass or like a story behind it, just
- 26:07Speaker 2: to help that. There's also like devices that you can
- 26:12Speaker 2: wear in the deaf community that kind of like cue
- 26:14Speaker 2: the rhythm or the beat. He chose to not do
- 26:17Speaker 2: that because it would be a distraction for him, and
- 26:21Speaker 2: so everything and you might say this kind of helped
- 26:24Speaker 2: our connection to it was all based off of visual,
- 26:29Speaker 2: physical cues throughout the choreography that I gave him, and
- 26:34Speaker 2: that's how he stayed on b and that's how you
- 26:37Speaker 2: know he had his success on the show. But you
- 26:41Speaker 2: know he does he does stage acting as well, and
- 26:45Speaker 2: he'll have light cues. Typically on stage, they do like
- 26:49Speaker 2: light cues for when to start certain especially if it's
- 26:53Speaker 2: in a musical and to start certain verses or phrases.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Or words, what a badass. That's that's very interesting. Big
- 27:08Speaker 1: fan of this show. By the way, it's very very
- 27:11Speaker 1: fun to watch. I don't know how you guys are
- 27:13Speaker 1: feeling about it, but yeah, I.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Definitely feel the same. I think as pros, we were
- 27:18Speaker 2: all a little bit like, you know, curious about the
- 27:20Speaker 2: concept of finding a brow.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Does this mean someone's getting fired? You're like, what does this.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Mean for our jobs? But I think it's I think
- 27:32Speaker 2: it's a really good idea and it's a great way
- 27:35Speaker 2: to just keep dancing with the stars on TV. Yeah.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Great, let's get into the episode, episode four. This week's
- 27:42Speaker 1: guest judge is Jenna Johnson. She performs quite a spicy
- 27:47Speaker 1: and like it seemed like a really difficult dance without
- 27:49Speaker 1: breaking a sweat. It was it as hard to do
- 27:53Speaker 1: as it looked, or can you guys all do that?
- 27:57Speaker 2: Oh? Well, first of all, I remember when, because we
- 28:01Speaker 2: were on tour together, Jenna was prepping her dance, and
- 28:06Speaker 2: you know, we all are such huge supporters of each other,
- 28:09Speaker 2: so we were showing each other the videos of our
- 28:11Speaker 2: choreography and all those things, and I immediate was like, Jenna,
- 28:15Speaker 2: this is going to be a hit. It is perfect
- 28:19Speaker 2: for your themed week. It has so much chemistry, so
- 28:21Speaker 2: much fire. And what's interesting is I feel like, again
- 28:28Speaker 2: each pro was pared for their theme, in my opinion,
- 28:32Speaker 2: perfectly for Jenna. Yes, could all of us pros on
- 28:36Speaker 2: the show learn her choreography, Yes, we all choreograph for
- 28:39Speaker 2: each other all the time, and so we could. But
- 28:42Speaker 2: she just brings that Jenna Johnson essence that was perfect
- 28:46Speaker 2: for this week.
- 28:47Speaker 1: It was beautiful. Were you surprised that they didn't have
- 28:50Speaker 1: Val be there or do you think that that was
- 28:52Speaker 1: a choice to be, Like, look how much chemistry she
- 28:55Speaker 1: has with someone who's not her husband.
- 28:57Speaker 2: You know, I don't know what the choice was or why,
- 29:00Speaker 2: or what the decision was, but I love that Jenna
- 29:03Speaker 2: was there on her own as Jenna Johnson, herself, her
- 29:09Speaker 2: brand as a pro on the show, even though her
- 29:12Speaker 2: and Bell are so interconnected and their relationship, you know,
- 29:16Speaker 2: both on stage and off stage, is so beautiful. I'm
- 29:20Speaker 2: so happy that Jenna got her moment to do that
- 29:23Speaker 2: as an individual, and I agree it was perfect to
- 29:28Speaker 2: demonstrate you can have incredible chemistry, you can act it.
- 29:33Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be your husband. It doesn't have
- 29:35Speaker 2: to be someone you're dating. You can really go into
- 29:39Speaker 2: that performance mode and show that chemistry. You know, as
- 29:42Speaker 2: dancers and performers were also actors. You have to make
- 29:45Speaker 2: it look real.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know if you in this thing, you're
- 29:48Speaker 1: gonna have to be dancing with people who are probably
- 29:50Speaker 1: married and what you can't really have organic chemistry, so
- 29:55Speaker 1: you're gonna have to figure out a way to sell
- 29:58Speaker 1: it to the audience. Talk about faking chemistry, is is
- 30:03Speaker 1: it something you can learn or what are the tricks
- 30:08Speaker 1: to like getting really good at it?
- 30:11Speaker 2: That's a really interesting I don't know if there is
- 30:13Speaker 2: any tricks. It's again it's that performance experience and how
- 30:22Speaker 2: you can you know, attach you know, if you feel chemistry,
- 30:27Speaker 2: if you feel you know, what does it feel like
- 30:29Speaker 2: to be sexy in your own body, and then if
- 30:32Speaker 2: you can capture that in real life and then put
- 30:34Speaker 2: it into a performance, whether you feel that for that
- 30:37Speaker 2: person or not, you know, you can. It's accessing real
- 30:42Speaker 2: life things. Even for us pros dancing on the show.
- 30:48Speaker 2: You know, we do rumbas, we do sexy, fun, sassy,
- 30:53Speaker 2: different numbers, but then we all go home to our
- 30:57Speaker 2: partners and like, okay, peace, I'll see you later. You know.
- 31:02Speaker 2: So it is it's a definite skill that these contestants,
- 31:06Speaker 2: whoever wins, needs to have. You know, I've had an
- 31:11Speaker 2: array of different partners as celebrities, and you know, I'll
- 31:18Speaker 2: say one as an example, Eric Roberts actor, Julia Roberts brother,
- 31:25Speaker 2: you know, and me having chemistry with him on stage
- 31:30Speaker 2: is so important because I want people to fall in
- 31:33Speaker 2: love with him. I want people to see how charming
- 31:38Speaker 2: he is. But we come from two very you know,
- 31:41Speaker 2: different worlds. He is, you know, not to really bring
- 31:44Speaker 2: race into it, but he is a seventy he's in
- 31:46Speaker 2: his seventies. He's a white male. You know, he's married. Me,
- 31:51Speaker 2: I'm in my thirties, I'm a black female. You know,
- 31:55Speaker 2: we wouldn't we would not meet on the street and
- 31:58Speaker 2: create a friendship necessary if it wasn't for Dancing with
- 32:01Speaker 2: the Stars. So, and what's interesting is when I get
- 32:07Speaker 2: paired with whoever my partner is, I really do try
- 32:11Speaker 2: to create an authentic relationship with them because that also helps.
- 32:15Speaker 2: It's also getting to know them, learning about their story,
- 32:20Speaker 2: and that also helps the authenticity of the chemistry on
- 32:23Speaker 2: on screen. And on and when you start to dance
- 32:25Speaker 2: with each other.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting you say that. You know, my wife
- 32:29Speaker 1: was on Modern Family for you know, eleven years, and
- 32:32Speaker 1: people will always say like, do they really like each other?
- 32:35Speaker 1: You know, like are they really like family? Like you
- 32:37Speaker 1: don't understand that. I think the only reason why that
- 32:39Speaker 1: show worked for so long is because everyone really really
- 32:42Speaker 1: loved each other and they felt like a family. Same
- 32:46Speaker 1: With's like when we work on Paradise. If the crew
- 32:49Speaker 1: is upset with the cast, then it never turns out well.
- 32:53Speaker 1: But if everyone's like Symbody co, the product is always good.
- 32:57Speaker 1: So I can totally see that for you guys, Like,
- 33:00Speaker 1: if you guys are really jelling and having a good time,
- 33:02Speaker 1: then it just kind of shows on TV. It's just interesting,
- 33:06Speaker 1: like side produce arial plot that I didn't think of,
- 33:09Speaker 1: but totally I can see it happening and working well. Yeah.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Jenna meets with the dancers to test out who's the
- 33:16Speaker 1: most compatible with one another. She calls it speed dating
- 33:19Speaker 1: Next Pro Edition. Jenna, this is I love this because,
- 33:23Speaker 1: uh it was mean and I thought it was funny.
- 33:26Speaker 1: It's so Jenna lines up the men and asked the
- 33:28Speaker 1: girls to choose who they'd like to be partnered with.
- 33:31Speaker 1: It was like full pe dodgeball, and you know, and
- 33:34Speaker 1: you don't want to be picked last. Uh Selena chooses Eric,
- 33:38Speaker 1: Stephanie and Nina both choose Alan, Adele chooses aj and
- 33:44Speaker 1: then no one chooses Tristan. Do you think that that's
- 33:49Speaker 1: because he was he's been at the bottom pretty consistently,
- 33:52Speaker 1: and if Natalie hadn't been knocked out because of her
- 33:56Speaker 1: eye injury, there's a good chance he was going home
- 33:58Speaker 1: in the last week. Or do you think it's because,
- 34:02Speaker 1: you know, he's not a classically trained ballroom guy. You know,
- 34:04Speaker 1: he's like more like a break dancing and like he's
- 34:08Speaker 1: not a classically trained guy. What do you think the
- 34:11Speaker 1: reason was.
- 34:12Speaker 2: I think it's many different reasons. You know, you can't
- 34:16Speaker 2: really say, oh, we don't know, we really don't know
- 34:21Speaker 2: who would have gone home my episode when Natalie went home,
- 34:25Speaker 2: we really we really don't know, because it didn't. But
- 34:30Speaker 2: I do think the girls were thinking strategically. I think
- 34:34Speaker 2: that they were thinking, oh, Tristan has been at the bottom,
- 34:37Speaker 2: and I don't want to be close to that because
- 34:42Speaker 2: I want to continue in the competition. I think it
- 34:46Speaker 2: was you know, for Selena, who also doesn't come from
- 34:50Speaker 2: a classically trained ballroom background, was very smart about going
- 34:55Speaker 2: with Eric. She knew that they have chemistry, she knew
- 34:58Speaker 2: that he would help lead in that traditional space, and
- 35:01Speaker 2: then she could bring on her expertise of switching it
- 35:05Speaker 2: up and making it a bit more commercial. And you know,
- 35:09Speaker 2: I felt bad for Stephanie and I didn't like that
- 35:14Speaker 2: Tristan gave her such a hard time because I actually
- 35:17Speaker 2: thought she was being very smart and she was trying
- 35:20Speaker 2: to get out of her comfort zone and dance with
- 35:23Speaker 2: someone different, because they had danced with each other in
- 35:26Speaker 2: every episode leading up to this, and so I felt
- 35:29Speaker 2: bad that he gave her a hard time for taking
- 35:32Speaker 2: a risk and taking a chance. And I actually wish
- 35:36Speaker 2: that both Nina and Adele maybe would have taken a
- 35:39Speaker 2: bit more risk too. It kind of felt like everyone
- 35:42Speaker 2: was in their comfort zone with who they paired up with.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Nina and Alan, they teach together, they've known each other
- 35:50Speaker 2: for years, and so that was a bit you know,
- 35:52Speaker 2: no one really took much risk about choosing their partners
- 35:56Speaker 2: except for Stephanie, and then of course she paired back
- 36:00Speaker 2: with Tristan.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting him getting upset with it. Like from
- 36:07Speaker 1: the TV standpoint, I appreciate it. I think it's me
- 36:10Speaker 1: that he gets angry or he gets annoyed or you know,
- 36:12Speaker 1: he's salty about it. But you know, if the mission
- 36:18Speaker 1: statement is to find somebody to be the next pro,
- 36:21Speaker 1: I imagine one of the biggest things you guys have
- 36:24Speaker 1: to do and get really good at is leaving your
- 36:26Speaker 1: ego at the door. He wasn't able to do.
- 36:28Speaker 2: That, absolutely, even I think he even said that he's petty.
- 36:33Speaker 2: And it's like, oh, you can't be petty in this
- 36:37Speaker 2: and this job and this responsibility as a pro because again,
- 36:42Speaker 2: it's not about us really during a season when you're
- 36:46Speaker 2: paired with a celebrity partner, it's about their journey, it's
- 36:49Speaker 2: about their experience. And so you're exactly right. You can't
- 36:52Speaker 2: have an ego. You have to leave it at the door,
- 36:55Speaker 2: and you have to make the best out of the
- 36:57Speaker 2: situation and make sure that the experience for them is okay.
- 37:03Speaker 2: No matter what.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Do you know, who wins this? Just signbar well, because
- 37:09Speaker 1: because I was gonna be like who, Like you're a
- 37:11Speaker 1: front runner, but if you know, then I don't want
- 37:13Speaker 1: to ask that. And then I'll just tell you what
- 37:14Speaker 1: I think.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, you tell me what you think.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Okay, the right off the bat, I think that. And
- 37:23Speaker 1: also bear in mind, I have no idea what I'm
- 37:26Speaker 1: talking about, Okay, like I have two left feet. My
- 37:30Speaker 1: wife's the dancer and the actor and the singer. But
- 37:32Speaker 1: like I don't know, I can call balls of strikes.
- 37:36Speaker 1: I guess I think that Adele is the strongest one.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Like every time I'm like, oh, yeah, she's like she's
- 37:42Speaker 1: very very very good. I tell you what really impressed
- 37:46Speaker 1: with Eric this last week. I feel like he like
- 37:49Speaker 1: really popped and that I hadn't seen that yet. So yeah,
- 37:54Speaker 1: I think those are That's that's my guy and girl.
- 37:58Speaker 1: But I know I could be I'm probably wrong, but
- 38:02Speaker 1: that from right now, that's what I think.
- 38:05Speaker 2: You know what I could say, I could say positive
- 38:08Speaker 2: things about all the cast, and I could pinpoint something
- 38:13Speaker 2: about each of them of why I believe that they
- 38:16Speaker 2: would make an incredible pro And then also in the
- 38:20Speaker 2: opposite too, I could probably say, oh, this is maybe
- 38:23Speaker 2: something that they would need to work on or I
- 38:26Speaker 2: would like to see develop throughout the series in order
- 38:31Speaker 2: for them to be ready to become a pro with
- 38:34Speaker 2: all of us.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Okay, let's play that game then. Okay, Okay, So I
- 38:37Speaker 1: think number one. I think Adele is the Every time
- 38:41Speaker 1: I watch her, I'm like, everyone loves us everything she does.
- 38:44Speaker 1: No one ever complains, like you know, she's always getting
- 38:46Speaker 1: good scores. Whatever I think she was called the Rolls
- 38:48Speaker 1: Royce or whatever is expensive, which I mean, what a line.
- 38:53Speaker 1: By the way, Derek Chef's guess on that. Okay, but
- 38:58Speaker 1: what does she need to work on if she wants
- 39:00Speaker 1: to get to that next level?
- 39:02Speaker 2: So also I just have to give her her flowers
- 39:04Speaker 2: too and agree with you because she is technically and
- 39:09Speaker 2: dance ability, she is absolutely incredible. She is gorgeous. Even
- 39:16Speaker 2: in this last episode Chemistry week, her rumba with aj
- 39:20Speaker 2: I was just like looking at her legs and her
- 39:23Speaker 2: efficiency from a dance standpoint, and just like an awe
- 39:27Speaker 2: of her talent. And so it's no wonder why you
- 39:30Speaker 2: know she's gotten the name Rolls Royce and she gets
- 39:34Speaker 2: her flowers every week. What I'm hoping throughout the series
- 39:38Speaker 2: is that I see a little bit more of who
- 39:40Speaker 2: Adele is as Adele, not dancer Adele. When you look
- 39:45Speaker 2: at every pro on the show, you know who we are,
- 39:49Speaker 2: and we have a very outside of our dance ability
- 39:54Speaker 2: and what we bring forward with our art. We each
- 39:57Speaker 2: have a very specific brand about who we are and
- 40:00Speaker 2: what we offer to the show. So I'm excited to
- 40:03Speaker 2: get more. I want to get to know her more
- 40:05Speaker 2: as Adele, and I want to fall in love with
- 40:08Speaker 2: Adele because who she is in addition to how amazing
- 40:12Speaker 2: I have a dancer she is.
- 40:13Speaker 1: That's a really interesting thing I didn't think of. But
- 40:15Speaker 1: of course, Yeah, like you guys are big personalities in there,
- 40:19Speaker 1: and you need to be able to compliment your your celebrity,
- 40:25Speaker 1: but then also like be entertaining when the celebrity probably isn't.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Usually it's at the end of the dance and you're
- 40:32Speaker 1: like hold on, like keep going by. That's so funny.
- 40:37Speaker 1: The other person that I that like, I'm constantly wowed
- 40:41Speaker 1: by is Selena. It's like her athleticism I think is
- 40:46Speaker 1: just like off the charts from like, I don't know
- 40:48Speaker 1: how she's able to do this. She's so strong, so quick,
- 40:51Speaker 1: so fast. So yeah, I mean everyone's good on this show.
- 40:55Speaker 1: But yeah, that's great.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Yeah, and I in my episode, I actually picked her
- 41:06Speaker 2: when I was when they were recreating my choreography, and
- 41:09Speaker 2: I taught them my group choreography before they created their own.
- 41:12Speaker 2: I picked her to be in my position in the
- 41:15Speaker 2: group dance because I see a lot of myself and her.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Before joining troop back in twenty sixteen, I had no
- 41:22Speaker 2: ballroom training. I like really just loved it and faked it,
- 41:26Speaker 2: and the show hired me knowing that. And so I
- 41:30Speaker 2: come from the exact same background that she she does.
- 41:34Speaker 2: And so I'm really excited for her because I agree
- 41:36Speaker 2: she is. She's a fireball. Like she You watch her
- 41:40Speaker 2: and you just your eye goes to her. She's just
- 41:43Speaker 2: has she has star quality. She's captivating, and so I'm
- 41:48Speaker 2: excited about her and I root for her so much.
- 41:54Speaker 2: And then you know, I would love if she not
- 41:58Speaker 2: saying that I did everything right. But when I came
- 42:00Speaker 2: on a troop, I went hardcore. I became a student again.
- 42:04Speaker 2: I went hardcore into training. I even started competing in
- 42:08Speaker 2: the ballroom to like give respect to my peers of
- 42:11Speaker 2: how they grew up and to just never lack knowledge.
- 42:16Speaker 2: And so that's what I wish for her. I wish
- 42:19Speaker 2: that she could now then like dive herself into the
- 42:22Speaker 2: ball room role because she has it. You can see it.
- 42:25Speaker 2: It's so clear, and I just want her to succeed
- 42:29Speaker 2: and do all the things, and I think she will.
- 42:42Speaker 1: The dancers blindly choose what sala dance they're doing, so
- 42:45Speaker 1: Stephanie interesting get the rumba, Adele and aj also get that,
- 42:51Speaker 1: Nina and Allen get the tango, and so do Selina
- 42:54Speaker 1: and Eric. Jenner reveals that this week's going to be
- 42:58Speaker 1: a blood bath because two people are are going home.
- 43:01Speaker 1: This is this is a tough thing to hear. I think, like,
- 43:06Speaker 1: so much more pressure is now put on you guys.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I it was that that was hard. But again,
- 43:14Speaker 2: you know, everything happens in couples on our show and
- 43:18Speaker 2: on Dance with the Stars and then also on Next Pro,
- 43:20Speaker 2: So you know, I don't think it's a huge surprise
- 43:22Speaker 2: that two people went home just to keep even numbers,
- 43:25Speaker 2: but but yeah, it's a lot of pressure. And then
- 43:30Speaker 2: it's also hard for Stephanie and Tristan, Like I really
- 43:34Speaker 2: my heart really felt for them because this is maybe
- 43:39Speaker 2: they're like, this is their second rumba that they've done
- 43:42Speaker 2: as a couple, and you know, how can you make
- 43:45Speaker 2: it different? How can you make it? Yes, it is
- 43:47Speaker 2: a different song, but you know, they weren't really able
- 43:50Speaker 2: to showcase a different vibe within their coupling, So yeah,
- 43:56Speaker 2: I kind of I kind of felt for them this episode.
- 43:59Speaker 1: I did too. I thought like, there's a little bit
- 44:02Speaker 1: of riding on the wall with that, but it just
- 44:04Speaker 1: is what it is. I do like that they sent
- 44:06Speaker 1: the couples on tates. I felt very and bachelorette here.
- 44:12Speaker 1: Alan and Nina go to the Ferris wheel together and
- 44:14Speaker 1: Nina gets emotional, which was good TV. Selena and Erica
- 44:18Speaker 1: on a boat ride, a DL and aj go to
- 44:20Speaker 1: lunch and talk about their origin stories, and then Stephanie
- 44:23Speaker 1: interest and go play Bosci ball right off the bat.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Which couple do you think has the best chemistry?
- 44:29Speaker 2: Oh, I definitely think Nina and Alan do, only because
- 44:34Speaker 2: of their history. I was really surprised by Selena and
- 44:37Speaker 2: eric I really think that they're both very authentic and
- 44:42Speaker 2: you know, had a genuine conversation and a genuine connection
- 44:47Speaker 2: not only about the competition that they're in, but just
- 44:50Speaker 2: about themselves as well. And I felt like that was
- 44:52Speaker 2: the perfect example of, Oh, I'm actually getting to learn
- 44:56Speaker 2: who they are as humans. For both of those couples
- 44:59Speaker 2: out side of just their dance ability. And then I
- 45:03Speaker 2: also felt like Stephanie was very vulnerable too about sharing
- 45:07Speaker 2: with Tristan how much pressure she is putting on herself
- 45:12Speaker 2: being involved in this, especially with her brother Ezra already
- 45:15Speaker 2: being a pro and her past being on Troop she was.
- 45:19Speaker 2: I was proud of her for her vulnerability and authenticity
- 45:21Speaker 2: in that moment.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Do you think that the show's hoping for a show mance?
- 45:25Speaker 1: Like there was a part of me that was like,
- 45:27Speaker 1: they said this, like is are Alan and Nina? Like
- 45:31Speaker 1: are they star cross lovers? I don't know if you
- 45:32Speaker 1: felt that way, but I felt like that's what they
- 45:34Speaker 1: were pushing us towards.
- 45:35Speaker 2: You know what. There was a like I know that
- 45:38Speaker 2: Nina and Alan are just friends and they have said
- 45:40Speaker 2: it more of like their friends. But there was a
- 45:43Speaker 2: moment where he was consoling her when she was crying.
- 45:45Speaker 2: I was like, are they about the kiss?
- 45:47Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 45:49Speaker 2: Great for chemistry week, Great, great for chemistry week.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:53Speaker 2: I did have that feeling and I was like, oh,
- 45:55Speaker 2: maybe this is something more, but you know it's not.
- 45:59Speaker 2: And going back to that chemistry, I it did feel
- 46:04Speaker 2: a little bit like Bachelor.
- 46:06Speaker 1: I'm happy to.
- 46:06Speaker 2: See them outside the studio. I thought that was a
- 46:08Speaker 2: really nice, you know, break and fresh air for them
- 46:13Speaker 2: to be able to get to know them and truly
- 46:16Speaker 2: build chemistry off the dance floor.
- 46:18Speaker 1: I loved it. Back to your point of like, you
- 46:21Speaker 1: want the pros to have personality and like know what
- 46:24Speaker 1: the personality is, and this was a good way of
- 46:27Speaker 1: being able to showcase it. Also the first time I realized,
- 46:31Speaker 1: I was like, oh, they're in Australia. I just assumed
- 46:33Speaker 1: they were in like Burbank, you know.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah I filmed in Brisbane.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, oh god. So let's get to show night.
- 46:43Speaker 1: I'm just going to kind of say what happened, and
- 46:45Speaker 1: then I just want you to give me, like just
- 46:48Speaker 1: your initial thoughts on each dance. Adele and Aj are
- 46:52Speaker 1: up first. Surely is awestruck by their performance. The judges
- 46:57Speaker 1: loved Adele and they think AJ could Doug deeper. Do
- 47:00Speaker 1: you agree with that assessment?
- 47:02Speaker 2: I absolutely agree. I really felt very genuine emotion and
- 47:07Speaker 2: passion from Adele. I thought that she was a very
- 47:11Speaker 2: good actress in that moment and in that dance, she
- 47:14Speaker 2: really let herself fall into it, and I saw glimpses
- 47:18Speaker 2: of it from AJ but I think, oh, I wrote
- 47:20Speaker 2: this down, surely said what does she say?
- 47:24Speaker 1: Oh?
- 47:25Speaker 2: She said that it looked like he was new to
- 47:27Speaker 2: chemistry and new to that authenticity. And I couldn't have
- 47:31Speaker 2: agreed more. I saw him going in and out of
- 47:33Speaker 2: it and almost having performative moments that felt like, Oh,
- 47:37Speaker 2: I have to do this at this moment to look
- 47:40Speaker 2: like I have chemistry versus Oh, I'm really like accessing
- 47:44Speaker 2: a part of myself that I can for my real life,
- 47:48Speaker 2: that I can put into this performance. I agree one
- 47:50Speaker 2: thousand percent.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Yeah, find that flow state? Yeah, just hard to find.
- 47:55Speaker 1: Selena and Eric are next with the tango. Surely needs
- 47:59Speaker 1: a fan after the performance, and Jenna wants to dance
- 48:02Speaker 1: with Eric. Now all the judges give them a standing ovation.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Was this the best dance tonight?
- 48:08Speaker 2: I think so, I really do. It was powerful and
- 48:12Speaker 2: it wasn't. Also, what I liked about their choreographic choices
- 48:15Speaker 2: was it wasn't too much. It was very It was
- 48:18Speaker 2: very palpable to where you could see that it was
- 48:21Speaker 2: a definite Argentine tango. But they left Especially for chemistry.
- 48:26Speaker 2: You want that, you want that like tension a little
- 48:29Speaker 2: bit and in order to have that tension, you also
- 48:32Speaker 2: need a bit of space within the dance and within
- 48:35Speaker 2: the movement. And they really did it. And I loved
- 48:41Speaker 2: some of the tips and advice that Jenna gave to them,
- 48:44Speaker 2: and they're rehearsal because I think it allowed them to
- 48:47Speaker 2: just be free and feel that natural chemistry between each other.
- 48:52Speaker 2: And it was it was, it was spicy. I was like, okay, yeah,
- 48:56Speaker 2: the moment went like Selena went down at the air.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Should I be watching this?
- 49:02Speaker 1: Yeah? I was like saying with her, my with my wife,
- 49:04Speaker 1: I'm like, you never do that for me? What's going
- 49:06Speaker 1: on here? You know? Production note? You know, I've noticed
- 49:11Speaker 1: that generally, at least in the first couple episodes, the
- 49:15Speaker 1: best dancers were going last. And this is the first
- 49:19Speaker 1: time where I feel like they flipped it up on us,
- 49:22Speaker 1: because after that dance, both Sarah and I were like, no,
- 49:27Speaker 1: one's been that right. Stephanie and Tristan perform the rumba
- 49:31Speaker 1: and Mark felt it was going in and out of
- 49:34Speaker 1: their dance. Jenna tells Stephanie to get out of her
- 49:36Speaker 1: own way. What does that mean? Get out of her
- 49:38Speaker 1: own way?
- 49:40Speaker 2: I think that just means, you know, when I was there,
- 49:43Speaker 2: you could really feel the pressure that Stephanie was putting
- 49:45Speaker 2: on herself. And you know, I don't know if this
- 49:50Speaker 2: was really shown, but we know Stephanie because of her
- 49:55Speaker 2: time on TRUP, and so we know, you know, she
- 49:58Speaker 2: has this alter eco that we she calls herself Chica,
- 50:03Speaker 2: and it kind of felt like Chico wasn't always there
- 50:05Speaker 2: during this process. And I really and you could you
- 50:08Speaker 2: could feel it on her, like anytime she talked about
- 50:12Speaker 2: how much this this meant to her, and you know,
- 50:16Speaker 2: she would get emotional. And so I think Jenna was
- 50:18Speaker 2: just like, you have it in there, we see it,
- 50:21Speaker 2: your beautiful dancer, your fiery just stop overthinking and just
- 50:27Speaker 2: let Stephanie shine. And so I think that's what Jenna
- 50:31Speaker 2: meant in that moment, and I couldn't agree more. And
- 50:34Speaker 2: you saw a glimpse of it. She's beautiful and fiery
- 50:38Speaker 2: and a gorgeous dancer.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Nina and I will go last with their tango. Shirley
- 50:42Speaker 1: doesn't like that they incorporated other elements that dance into it,
- 50:45Speaker 1: but they all agree that it was Nina's best performance
- 50:48Speaker 1: so far. A bold choice to like kind of go
- 50:51Speaker 1: away from the quote unquote brief, very bold.
- 50:54Speaker 2: I thought it was funny how they kind of, you know,
- 50:57Speaker 2: she rely kind of poked at Mark saying that he
- 50:59Speaker 2: always breaks the rules, which he does, so that was funny.
- 51:03Speaker 2: But yeah, I thought it was very bold. Argentine Argentine
- 51:08Speaker 2: tango is a very specific dance style that is, you know,
- 51:15Speaker 2: gets its name from Argentina, and it has an essence,
- 51:19Speaker 2: a technique, and so you can maybe adding in some
- 51:25Speaker 2: different dance styles that would have complimented it better would
- 51:29Speaker 2: have perhaps been a different choice, you know, putting in
- 51:34Speaker 2: tango and samba, especially samba, which is completely different from
- 51:39Speaker 2: Argentine tago. I can see why Shirley said what she said,
- 51:44Speaker 2: and I almost feel like if they would have stuck
- 51:46Speaker 2: with Argentine tango, it would have been a bit more cohesive.
- 51:51Speaker 2: And Argentin tanko is so romantic, it's so passionate, perfect
- 51:54Speaker 2: for why it was chosen for Chemistry week, so it
- 51:57Speaker 2: might have felt we might have felt something a little
- 51:59Speaker 2: bit more.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's got to be a tough line to walk
- 52:04Speaker 1: because you don't want to give the judges any reason
- 52:07Speaker 1: to knock points off, right, but you also want to like,
- 52:10Speaker 1: I don't know, wow people, and so like I can
- 52:13Speaker 1: see I can see both sides of it.
- 52:14Speaker 2: I guess absolutely. That's what I was going to say.
- 52:17Speaker 2: You can't really fault them. They're in a competition, they're
- 52:20Speaker 2: trying to stand out as much as they can be different,
- 52:24Speaker 2: and so I don't fault them for taking a risk.
- 52:27Speaker 2: I just don't know if I would have made the
- 52:29Speaker 2: same choice.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Stephanie and Tristan are in Jeopardy. Nina and Alan
- 52:33Speaker 1: also in Jeopardy. Stephanie and Tristan are the couple that
- 52:36Speaker 1: goes home. Does it seem like Tristan's apparent shortcomings cost
- 52:41Speaker 1: Stephanie her shot at becoming a pro and like his
- 52:44Speaker 1: pettiness as well, and like kind of tough start to
- 52:49Speaker 1: like learning that dance just because of like the negativity
- 52:52Speaker 1: that he had surrounding not being picked.
- 52:55Speaker 2: I mean, perhaps perhaps when you come into a space,
- 53:02Speaker 2: whether you can change it or not, you kind of
- 53:05Speaker 2: come into that space and you set a foundation and
- 53:07Speaker 2: everything can change and shift. But they probably got a
- 53:11Speaker 2: rough start and then had to rush the process a
- 53:14Speaker 2: little bit because they had to work out and work
- 53:17Speaker 2: through that negativity. So perhaps it is the reason why
- 53:22Speaker 2: they could have been in the bottom. And you know, again,
- 53:25Speaker 2: Tristan had been in the bottom for you know, for
- 53:29Speaker 2: almost all the weeks, I believe, So it was just it.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Was just a tough pick and advice you'd give the
- 53:36Speaker 1: Stephanie going forward ah.
- 53:40Speaker 2: To not let the pressure get to her. You know,
- 53:43Speaker 2: I think Jenna said it perfectly. You can't overthink it.
- 53:48Speaker 2: You just you have to stay authentic to yourself and
- 53:53Speaker 2: no matter what. And you know, I think we all
- 53:58Speaker 2: remind ourselves of that every season too. You know, the
- 54:02Speaker 2: amount of pressure that we are under each and every
- 54:06Speaker 2: week is insane. And then on top of that, you know,
- 54:11Speaker 2: the next pro is not live. Dancing with the Stars
- 54:14Speaker 2: is live. You have one chance, you have one shot
- 54:18Speaker 2: to do it. I almost started wrapping.
- 54:20Speaker 1: The eminem right there.
- 54:21Speaker 2: I was like what and that I like really got
- 54:24Speaker 2: into but I was like a rapper, what is happening? Yeah?
- 54:29Speaker 2: You and I know she knows that. I just think
- 54:33Speaker 2: she just yeah, she just lost a little bit of
- 54:37Speaker 2: her cheeka and I never want her to do that again. Ever.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Yeah, chic needs to come out more often. Yes, yes, Ritt,
- 54:44Speaker 1: thank you so much for coming on the show. This
- 54:47Speaker 1: has been a lot of fun. I've learned so much
- 54:50Speaker 1: from having you on. Last question any celebrity in the world.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Who would you want to dance with?
- 54:57Speaker 2: Oh, my god, any celebrity. I'm and if you're really
- 55:00Speaker 2: dreaming big, like I don't know, just In Justin Bieber,
- 55:03Speaker 2: Justin Timberlake. I don't know. There's some really, there's some
- 55:09Speaker 2: fun people out there right now. I've been saying two
- 55:14Speaker 2: names for like the past I think year, year and
- 55:18Speaker 2: a half of who I think would be amazing. His
- 55:22Speaker 2: name is Simu from Marvel Okay. He does like you know,
- 55:27Speaker 2: karate and taichi, and I think he would be awesome.
- 55:30Speaker 2: But also Harry Shum from Gray's Anatomy. He's also like
- 55:34Speaker 2: throwback to Glee. He was just on letters for Isabelle
- 55:38Speaker 2: on Netflix, and he has dance experience. I actually I've
- 55:42Speaker 2: never had a partner with dance experience before, and so
- 55:45Speaker 2: I think it would be fun. I think it would
- 55:47Speaker 2: be fun and creative and.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, you know, I think would be really good.
- 55:53Speaker 2: Oh tell me.
- 55:54Speaker 1: And it's funny because the reason why I asked this
- 55:57Speaker 1: because I saw this Tom Holland video where he just
- 56:00Speaker 1: goes on interviews and says the things that he wants
- 56:02Speaker 1: and then they end up becoming true and Tom's got
- 56:05Speaker 1: a The reason why he's such a good spider Man's
- 56:07Speaker 1: because he's got this really good dance background. I think
- 56:10Speaker 1: that would be a cool partner to have.
- 56:12Speaker 2: Wells, Yeah, might have permission to steal this name. So
- 56:17Speaker 2: now whatever, because I get asked this question all the
- 56:19Speaker 2: time and I'm like, yes, yeah, that is perfect. H
- 56:26Speaker 2: I'm going to steal that. I hope you don't mind.
- 56:28Speaker 1: No, nope, please take it. Thank you anything I didn't
- 56:31Speaker 1: ask you that you want to talk about or promote.
- 56:33Speaker 1: And then where can people find you?
- 56:35Speaker 2: Oh? I would just say you can find me on
- 56:38Speaker 2: you know, online, the socials, Instagram and TikTok at britt
- 56:42Speaker 2: Bennet and then follow along my nonprofit called Share the Movement.
- 56:47Speaker 2: We are all about providing financial, educational, and inspirational support
- 56:52Speaker 2: to bipop dancers who dream to become professional. So yeah,
- 56:59Speaker 2: that's that's all I have to say. It was so
- 57:01Speaker 2: fun to talk to you and talk about the next
- 57:05Speaker 2: pro I'm really excited about the show.
- 57:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a fun show. Thanks for coming on. Your
- 57:08Speaker 1: episode was fantastic In the last episode or all the
- 57:12Speaker 1: pros coming.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Back, I don't know if I could share.
- 57:15Speaker 1: Okay, that's a yes. Britt Stewart, thank you so much.
- 57:20Speaker 1: You are absolutely awesome. Everyone out there, thank you so
- 57:22Speaker 1: much for listening to By Order of the Faithfuls the
