- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought. From Tabernacle Baptist.
- 0:05Church in Essex, MD. I'm your host Brian Self.
- 0:09We hope this podcast encourages you to know Christ grow in His
- 0:12Word. And show his love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in Psalm 144, Psalm 144, and the inscription for
- 0:22this Psalm reads of David, not a Psalm of David, it just says of
- 0:26David. Let's read through.
- 0:29This passage. There's some.
- 0:31Really, really great. Word pictures in this particular
- 0:35Psalm and so I'm excited to dive into those together Psalm 144
- 0:39and verse one blessed be Yahweh my rock who trains my hands for
- 0:44battle and my. Fingers for warfare.
- 0:47He is my. Faithful love and my fortress,
- 0:49my stronghold and my deliverer. He is my shield and I take
- 0:54refuge in him. He subdues my people under me.
- 0:58Yahweh. What is a human that you?
- 1:01Care for him. A son of man that you think of
- 1:03him a human is. Like a breath.
- 1:06His days. Are like a passing shadow Yahweh
- 1:10part your. Heavens and come down, touch the
- 1:13mountains and they will smoke. Flash your lightning and scatter
- 1:17the foe. Shoot down your arrows.
- 1:20And route them, reach down from on high, rescue me from deep
- 1:24water and set me. Free from the grasp of
- 1:27foreigners, whose mouths speak lies, whose right hands are
- 1:31deceptive. God, I will sing a new.
- 1:34Song to you. I will play on a 10 stringed
- 1:37harp. For you the.
- 1:38One who gives? Victory to kings, who frees his
- 1:42servant David from the. Deadly sword set me.
- 1:45Free and rescue me from foreigners.
- 1:47Whose mouths speak? Lies whose right?
- 1:50Hands are deceptive. Then our sons.
- 1:52Will be like plants nurtured in their youth, our daughters like.
- 1:56Horror pillars. That are carved in the palace
- 1:59style. Our storehouses will be full,
- 2:02supplying all kinds of produce. Our flocks will increase by
- 2:05thousands and 10s of thousands in our open fields.
- 2:09Our cattle will be well fed. There will be no breach in the
- 2:12walls, no. Going into captivity.
- 2:15And no cry of laments in our public squares.
- 2:18Happy are the people with such blessings.
- 2:20Happy are the people whose God is Yahweh.
- 2:25All right, let's look at these today.
- 2:27And one thing I do want to take a note of in verses 8:00 and
- 2:3511:00, there's a mention of foreigners here.
- 2:39And just so we're super, super clear, when Scripture is
- 2:43speaking about foreigners, it is talking about those outside of
- 2:47the land of Israel. Those without God.
- 2:50Seeking to attack and harm. God's.
- 2:53People Israel and. The the parallel.
- 3:00To today. Would be those.
- 3:01Seeking to harm the Church of Jesus Christ, that is, those
- 3:07that want to attack God's people, those that want to harm
- 3:10them. There would be.
- 3:12This same desire of. Lord, would you?
- 3:14Protect from this evil. Now there can certainly be a.
- 3:19'Cause. There can, certainly.
- 3:21Be a case also made as well. For when there are invading
- 3:25forces. Or as here.
- 3:28Possibly invading spies. That would also.
- 3:31Be something that. You would ask for God's.
- 3:33Deliverance from but just given of the current climate of the
- 3:37world. I thought it would be.
- 3:39Wise to know what that is and what that is not speaking about.
- 3:44You can even think David's great grandmother was a foreigner.
- 3:49We we read through the book of Ruth probably.
- 3:54Year and a half ago. At this point.
- 3:58And so David here is not saying, man, I just hate all of the
- 4:01foreigners. That's not the statement that's
- 4:04being made. There is a very particular type
- 4:07of person, a godless person with intent to do harm, that David.
- 4:11Is praying against. All right, verse verses number
- 4:15one and two this is. As David starts off.
- 4:17He is so thankful for who? God is.
- 4:21And so he praises him, he he blesses him, speaks well about
- 4:25God. He says Blessed be Yahweh my.
- 4:28Rock. God is that steady One who is
- 4:32there for us in all the different moments of life here a
- 4:36rock. Is as opposed.
- 4:38To sand it is a safe place that can be stood upon.
- 4:43That you don't have to worry about.
- 4:44Your feet giving out from under you.
- 4:46It is a defensible position that.
- 4:50You are further up. Then all of those that would be
- 4:55attacking you and David says the if.
- 4:58You will the edge that I. Have in my life the edge.
- 5:01That I have. In battle against those that are
- 5:05seeking to do harm. To my nation.
- 5:07Is that I'm standing. On the Lord he doesn't.
- 5:12Go on and. On about his.
- 5:14Great military might, he goes on and on.
- 5:17About his great God, the. Next part of verse #1 Blessed.
- 5:23Be Yahweh my rock. He says who trains?
- 5:25My hands for battle and my fingers for.
- 5:28Warfare. Of maybe most of the people in
- 5:32Scripture, David could certainly feel like.
- 5:35He he was a really great. Warrior and so he could talk
- 5:38about his greatness, but here he doesn't do that.
- 5:41He doesn't say, you know, blessed be Yahweh my rock, and
- 5:44blessed be. You know David who?
- 5:48Kills his 10s of thousands, even as he would have heard songs at
- 5:51different points in his life talking about his own military
- 5:54greatness and said David says no.
- 5:55If I have any skill in battle. If I have any skill in warfare.
- 6:01It is because God is. Moving and working through me to
- 6:06protect and to save His people for your life and for your.
- 6:12Job for. Your school, work, whatever you
- 6:14know kind of life situation God has you in right now.
- 6:17Do you realize? That any good thing about?
- 6:20You has come because God is moving and living and working
- 6:24through you that if you you don't have a good singing voice
- 6:28that it is. God, the, if you will, the
- 6:31original singer is. The one that is working in and
- 6:35through you. And so we don't have anything
- 6:37that we can be. Proud about that we.
- 6:40Should say like, Oh yeah, I'm, I'm pretty.
- 6:41Great, you know. Hopefully at some point or
- 6:44another Tabernacle talk. Or my sermons or something has.
- 6:49Been an encouragement to you if you're randomly listening to
- 6:51Psalm 140. 4 on a Tuesday or whatever day you're listening to
- 6:56this. Then I assume at some point
- 6:58maybe these have been a blessing to you.
- 7:00But my heartfelt desire is that I would always remember that no
- 7:06good thing coming out of my life is as a result of how great
- 7:09Brian is. It's not as a result of, you
- 7:13know, all the work that I've put in.
- 7:15No Every iota of my life, every minute of my.
- 7:19Life I have. Lived in.
- 7:22The gift? Of God's like.
- 7:24Goodness to me of His grace. Being poured.
- 7:27Out undeserved, lavishly. And so I need to be thankful to
- 7:34God. Are you thankful to God for
- 7:36equipping you to be? Able to do.
- 7:38Everything that you are doing. In your life.
- 7:42David goes on in verse 2 and says he.
- 7:44God is my faithful love. And my fortress, like God's, the
- 7:48one I'm sticking around. There's this, I said.
- 7:51It's that covenant love. And so because we are.
- 7:54Together we are. Joined by promise man I love God
- 7:59he is my fortress. Here there's is a place of
- 8:03refuge. We I don't know, sometimes when
- 8:07growing up I would think about a fortress as primarily like an
- 8:10attack point. So I huge fan.
- 8:14Of like the. Lord of the Rings, and so as I.
- 8:16Thought about. Fortresses, you know, this is
- 8:20drastic place that is amazing to look at, but fortresses during
- 8:24this time was you want to get somewhere that's safe away from
- 8:28the enemy that the enemy can't break into you go to the.
- 8:31Fortress. And so God is.
- 8:32Our fortress, I think. Of the proverbs.
- 8:35I was just singing a song the other day.
- 8:37I can't remember if it's one of the old like Miranatha music
- 8:41things or if it was something that my dad had written.
- 8:44He's he's written just a couple. Of I'll say little ditties.
- 8:49Through the years, but it goes the name of the Lord is a strong
- 8:55tower. The righteous run into it and
- 9:02they are safe. And I love that God's name,
- 9:06God's authority, is a. Safe place.
- 9:09That we can run to over and over again and we find.
- 9:12Refuge from. The enemy Within.
- 9:16Our God. He says he is my stronghold and
- 9:20my. Deliverer.
- 9:21God is the rescuer and certainly for the children of Israel as
- 9:25they thought about their history as.
- 9:26They thought about. Egypt and the 10 plagues.
- 9:29As they thought about the judges, as they.
- 9:30Thought even about Saul's. Kind of early.
- 9:33Life and the way that God used him to win some victories over
- 9:37the people that were oppressing them.
- 9:39And then now during the reign of David.
- 9:42Yes, God. Is this deliverer?
- 9:44Throughout. Generations over and.
- 9:46Over and over again and. He can deliver.
- 9:49You and I. Today he says he is my.
- 9:52Shield and I take refuge in him. He says he subdues my people
- 9:57under me. He goes.
- 9:58I can't really rule over Israel. But God is the one that is
- 10:04ruling. And I think about this, you
- 10:06know, even in my kind of role as a pastor, I have.
- 10:11No innate. Ability on my own to pastor
- 10:16people from all different. Walks of life.
- 10:18From different ethnicities and different backgrounds and
- 10:22different, you know, denominational affiliations
- 10:24through the years and all that. I just have no idea.
- 10:27How to deal with? All the various.
- 10:30Things but God. Is the one who really is the
- 10:33chief shepherd, as we're told in first Peter 5.
- 10:37And so I'm just an under shepherd, one that would try and
- 10:40mimic what Jesus says so. Jesus has his.
- 10:43Word. So I want to be faithful to say
- 10:45His word. Jesus loves.
- 10:46I want to try to be. Faithful to love and I
- 10:49recognize. If I pastor God's people, if
- 10:53there's. Any like submission and
- 10:56obedience and and joy to be. Able to follow.
- 10:59Me in the ministry then. Pardon me, I just.
- 11:05Got a text over in the corner and it made me lose my train of
- 11:08thought if there's going to be any of like my leadership in
- 11:12Tabernacle. Baptist Church it's.
- 11:14Going to come because God is the one.
- 11:16That is working and. God is the one that is leading
- 11:19people to follow and so I need to always be remembering.
- 11:23God, you are great. You're important.
- 11:26You're wonderful you. Rescue you deliver you subdue.
- 11:30I just need to be faithful to worship.
- 11:32You and to obey you. Verses 3 and 4 Yahweh.
- 11:35What is a human? You care for him, a son of man
- 11:39that you think of him. A human is like a breath.
- 11:42His days are like. A passing shadow.
- 11:46Here he goes. God like you are incredible.
- 11:49You are so far above my character.
- 11:53You are so far above my understanding.
- 11:56And so God. Why would you care about us?
- 11:58Why would you? Consider why would you spend
- 12:01time. Thinking about.
- 12:04Me and then in. Verses 5 through. 8 David uses
- 12:11some of the pictures that would be painted in the.
- 12:15Stories. Of the Canaanite peoples and
- 12:18the. Peoples around Israel like as
- 12:21they thought about their quote UN quote gods.
- 12:23David goes no no, like God is the true one that all of these.
- 12:28Lesser, you know, lower. Case Gods they wish.
- 12:34That they could be like. Yahweh, the God of Israel, he
- 12:37says in verse 5. Yahweh part your.
- 12:39Heavens and come. Down this is if you will open up
- 12:43the skies and come on down to humanity, he says.
- 12:47Touch the mountains. And they will smoke.
- 12:50You can think about Sinai that smoked and lightning.
- 12:54Even as Moses. Was up there and the children
- 12:56of. Israel were.
- 12:57Deeply afraid of this presence of God on the mountain, or, as
- 13:01we read in it's Hebrews 12, our God.
- 13:04Is a consuming. Fire.
- 13:07And so here this God is one that when he returns as King of Kings
- 13:12and Lord of Lords, and we are told that he will descend back
- 13:16onto the Mount of Olives, that just as he left, he's coming
- 13:19back to the same spot. And what a day that will be when
- 13:22the Lord returns and when He returns with 10 thousands of
- 13:26his. Angels and AS.
- 13:27He returns with all of the redeemed.
- 13:31What an incredible day that that will be.
- 13:34It will be a day. Of judgment it will be.
- 13:37A day of fear for. Everyone that has snubbed their
- 13:40nose at God, everyone that has rejected Christ, they will fear
- 13:44in that day. Justly.
- 13:47Because he is coming to to execute.
- 13:51Justice. On all mankind, but on that day,
- 13:54what a joy for the people of God, those that have bent the
- 13:57need of King Jesus. Willingly, joyfully hailing.
- 14:00Him as Savior and Lord. It will.
- 14:03Be a. Tremendous day.
- 14:04Verse #6 Flash your lightning and.
- 14:08Scatter the foe. You can think.
- 14:10About the story of Deborah and I cannot remember.
- 14:17The guy's name in that. Story Barrick.
- 14:21Deborah and Barrick. As they're.
- 14:23Having to go up against this gigantic.
- 14:26Army, but God. From heaven rains down like
- 14:31hailstorm. And he has.
- 14:33Lightning that is there and so it.
- 14:35Throws. This army with.
- 14:37Lots of Chariots. And lots of horses into.
- 14:40Disarray. And so here, David, I'm.
- 14:42Certain thinking. About the the stories of
- 14:45yesteryear, he was God. You have scattered the enemies
- 14:49once before and God I believe that you are able to do it again
- 14:53to shoot your arrows and route them.
- 14:55Here lightning bolts are kind of are kind of pictured.
- 14:59Like a arrow. That is being shot from a bow,
- 15:03he says in verse 7. Reach down from on high.
- 15:06Rescue me from deep water. And set me free from the grasp
- 15:10of foreigners whose mouths speak lies, whose right hands are
- 15:13deceptive. Here the deep.
- 15:15Water. This is the.
- 15:16Picture of. If you will.
- 15:18It's very common in the Hebrew. Bible to talk.
- 15:21About things this way, the nations.
- 15:25Of the world. That are anti God are often
- 15:28pictured like. The chaos.
- 15:30Waters that want to bring everything.
- 15:32To death. And destruction and devastation.
- 15:36And so he says. God, it's like.
- 15:38I'm in. Deep water with these people
- 15:41that want to drown me that want to.
- 15:43Drown our nation. And so, God, would you reach
- 15:46down and rescue me? Would you save?
- 15:48Me from. These evil doers.
- 15:52He says in verse #9 God, I will sing a new song to you.
- 15:56I will play on a 10 stringed harp.
- 15:58For you the. One who gives victory to kings,
- 16:01who frees his servant David from the deadly sword.
- 16:05God's rescue. Of you and me.
- 16:07It means that he deserves new songs.
- 16:10It means that he deserves to be praised with everything that
- 16:14exists. He deserves to be praised with
- 16:16our mouths. He deserves to be praised with
- 16:17our minds. He deserves to be praised on
- 16:20whatever instrument mankind can invent.
- 16:23And so. This is.
- 16:25One of the I think 6:00 or so verses that we read in Psalms
- 16:28that would encourage us. That.
- 16:30As God continues to work in the lives.
- 16:33Of his people he is. Deserving of new songs and new
- 16:37praises. I'm thankful for old songs.
- 16:39I'm thankful for songs even that have come out in the last, you
- 16:42know, 28 years as I've been alive.
- 16:45But I also know. I will be singing some songs in
- 16:4820 and 30 years that have not been written yet, and I know
- 16:52that because my God is consistently being good and
- 16:56doing new things and applying truths from His Word to the
- 17:01hearts of people in new and fresh ways.
- 17:04So. That they can't help but write.
- 17:06Down in song or burst out in singing.
- 17:09About what? God.
- 17:10Has done and so let's never be. Opposed to.
- 17:14Singing new songs. This is something that God tells
- 17:17us in His Word, that as He. Works.
- 17:19We sing new songs to him. Verse 11 he says set me.
- 17:23Free and rescue. Me from foreigners whose mouths
- 17:26speak. Lies whose?
- 17:27Right hands are deceptive and you can read.
- 17:30I believe it's Second Samuel chapter 10.
- 17:32It's the. Chapter right before.
- 17:35Everything goes down with Bathsheba.
- 17:38But in chapter. 10 David had had a long time ally in the region,
- 17:46and he had passed and his son had now ascended to the throne.
- 17:49And so David had sent some men to say, like, man, I'm so sorry
- 17:53for your. For the loss of your.
- 17:55Father, he was a great friend, but like you know, we, we want
- 17:59to continue good relations between our nation and yours and
- 18:03instead of being grateful for that the new king of that
- 18:09country. Shaved like.
- 18:11Half the beards of the men that had come, which was incredibly
- 18:16consulting at that time. If you had, you know, a big
- 18:19beard, it was a sign of, oh, this person has.
- 18:22Aged he has. A wisdom he has maturity and you
- 18:25can see that by how long his beard is.
- 18:27It's an indication of how long he has lived on Earth, and so
- 18:32to. Cut off half the beard.
- 18:33Would be a great insult. Is to say.
- 18:35Basically, this guy has no wisdom and he looks dumb and so
- 18:42therefore he must be dumb. So it's a great insult and a
- 18:44great affront. And then if I, I.
- 18:46Recall correctly, he also cut off the like back half of their.
- 18:51Tunics. So that their rears.
- 18:53Could be seen. Which again is.
- 18:55Very insulting, you know, kind of humorous to the people that
- 18:59would see it and so. There, David, has these people
- 19:03here, these. Foreigners that instead of.
- 19:06Faithful, you know. Covenant love between.
- 19:09These peoples, even as David. Had showed kindness, now there
- 19:13was. Insult and rejection.
- 19:15And so David says, God, would you free me?
- 19:18Would you set me free from the grasp of these people?
- 19:23Verse #12 He says then what will happen when God saves us and
- 19:26delivers us. He says then our sons will be
- 19:29like plants nurtured in their youth, that you don't have young
- 19:34men that are cut down at 13 or 19 or 24 through having to fight
- 19:40in warfare when God delivers and there is safety.
- 19:43There is REST. Your young men grow up and
- 19:47they're not cut down in their youth, They are nurtured in
- 19:49their youth. He says our daughters.
- 19:51Like corner pillars. That are carved.
- 19:53In the palace style. If you will.
- 19:57That you were. Your daughters are able to grow
- 20:00up. They are not cut down in their
- 20:02youth. If you will, they're not cut
- 20:03down pre. Puberty here the carved in the
- 20:07palace style it's. Corner.
- 20:09Pillars. Here there is nobility.
- 20:12You would look. At these pillars and you go,
- 20:14wow, that's that's a nice looking pillar.
- 20:16And David says that our daughters will not be.
- 20:19Murdered or cut? Down by these invading.
- 20:23Forces, but instead. They're able to reach full.
- 20:26Maturity in their life and verse #13.
- 20:31Our storehouses will be. Full supplying all.
- 20:35Kinds of produce. Instead of what would very often
- 20:38happen. That they would have a.
- 20:40Harvest and invading. Forces like the Amalekites or
- 20:44the Midianites or Philistines or whatever would come through and
- 20:48steal a bunch of the crops. And you can read about that even
- 20:51in the story of Gideon. And the opposite of this is when
- 20:54God has delivered us. Our storehouses are full of
- 20:57produce because they have not been stolen, he says.
- 20:59Our flocks will increase by thousands and 10s of thousands
- 21:03in our open fields. Our cattle will be well fed.
- 21:06There's grass. Sufficient to eat, he says.
- 21:10There will be no breach in the walls that you don't have
- 21:14people. That are through.
- 21:16You know, I don't know all the methods.
- 21:18That people would use to breakthrough.
- 21:20City walls during that time period.
- 21:22But he's saying there's not invading armies.
- 21:25He says no, going into captivity, even as we think
- 21:29about Israel's history and how they went into captivity and the
- 21:32great grief that there was there when.
- 21:34God does his. Work, and certainly we can think
- 21:37ultimately of when. Christ returns.
- 21:39This will be. Ultimately true, there will be
- 21:41no more going into captivity for the children of Israel and said
- 21:45they will be reconciled to their God.
- 21:47Forever, just as we are. Says and no cry of lament in our
- 21:52public squares. There's no more.
- 21:54If you will in the. Words of Revelation 21 or 22.
- 21:59That there is. No more sorrow and weeping.
- 22:02God Himself wipes away our tears.
- 22:04Because there is no more evil on.
- 22:07Planet earth verse 15 happy are the people with.
- 22:11Such blessings Happy. Are the people whose God is
- 22:15Yahweh? Now as I have stated before,
- 22:19when scripture says this, happy. Are the people whose God is?
- 22:22Yahweh, this is not saying, you know, someone adopts a
- 22:28particular mantra as a nation, whether it's the US or the
- 22:31Philippines or you know, the the nation right now by the name of
- 22:37Israel over in the Middle East or you know.
- 22:40Perhaps South Africa? Or something.
- 22:41It's not if you just put something in your documents that
- 22:45says. That you are a.
- 22:46Christian nation or a Jesus following nation?
- 22:51That doesn't actually change anyone's hearts.
- 22:54The people whose God is the. Lord are.
- 22:56Those that have. Actually personally placed their
- 22:58faith in Jesus. And.
- 23:01We enjoy a certainty and we enjoy blessings in our life that
- 23:07the US. As a whole.
- 23:09Does not have. We have a.
- 23:11Blessing as the. People of God.
- 23:14To which no one else can lay claim to, because we are those
- 23:19that know and follow and. Worship the Lord Yahweh.
- 23:23Jesus. And because we have.
- 23:25Him as our. God, that is how we have access.
- 23:29To the blessings and the promises and the presence.
- 23:33Of our God. It's.
- 23:34Not through having you know in God we trust on our coins lots.
- 23:39Of people have. Coins or dollars that say in God
- 23:42we trust whose hearts are far far from God.
- 23:45So the goal is not have a. Christian Nation.
- 23:48In documentation, the goal is be that holy nation that Jesus has
- 23:54made from all tribes and all peoples and all languages, and
- 23:59we are the nation whose God is the Lord, the people of God, the
- 24:04Church of Jesus. Christ.
