- 0:36OK, so autism and sleeping difficulties.
- 0:38Now, girls on the autism spectrum are no exception to
- 0:41this rule. Autism comes with a bunch of
- 0:43other stuff. Autism creates the ability for
- 0:45your mind to run at 1000 miles an hour.
- 0:46If your mind is going at 1000 miles an hour, how on earth are
- 0:49you ever going to keep up right now if you're not able to keep
- 0:51up with your mind, if you're not able to do those things where
- 0:54you feel like, oh, I can do this now to relax, I can do that to
- 0:57to stay awake, you know, all of those things encompassed in a
- 1:02specific environment cause emotional deregulation and also
- 1:07sleeping issues. And what I mean by this is very,
- 1:08very simple. If you're a female on the autism
- 1:10spectrum and you are trying to be the most productive in your
- 1:13day, you're going around your day and you are just killing it.
- 1:16You do all these tasks, your mind is active and you're
- 1:17keeping that dopamine high, just going through his task and he
- 1:21must do all the list news, all these hackings and these apps to
- 1:23get through everything. Now the end of the night, you
- 1:26close your eyes and try to sleep.
- 1:26It's not going to happen. You would just spend the entire
- 1:29day kicking ass. And now you're like, OK brain,
- 1:32calm down, doesn't happen. You need to create an
- 1:35environment where you start to calm yourself down in order to
- 1:38that you can then go to sleep. You know, it's kind of like
- 1:41saying it's like having an airplane stopping midair.
- 1:44So that's going to happen. Airplane.
- 1:45It has momentum. It's going to have to slow down
- 1:47gradually and unpack. Now, in terms of your brain,
- 1:51it's exactly the same. So This is why this is what I'll
- 1:53tell you to do. Drink caffeine before bed.
- 1:55I know it sounds really, really like opposite, but stimulants
- 1:58help the autism brain because it helps increase serotonin levels
- 2:02which will learn increase your ability to sleep better.
- 2:05I know it sounds crazy. Bear with me.
- 2:07So have caffeine before bed. Maybe come see if people call me
- 2:09before you go to bed, but create a setting and environment.
- 2:13You know, put on candles with dim the lights in your living
- 2:15and watch something that's calming.
- 2:16Maybe stop television an hour before you want to go to sleep,
- 2:19read a book or something. But nothing that's going to be
- 2:22too exciting. All of these things is designed
- 2:25to help you go, OK, I'm, I'm entering slumber period and I'm
- 2:28going to go to bed and I'm going to have a good rest.
