Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You're listening to the I Align podcast with Flint Mitchell, where I provide stories, resources, and tools for ambitious builders who are ready to gain control over procrastination, overthinking, and distraction.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Welcome.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: There is no such thing as a clean slate.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: I could theoretically start an entirely new life in a new place with new people, and I would still either be supported by or held back by my current body and current mind.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: What's up?
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: My name is Flint Mitchell from Ioline.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: I went from a life of stagnation, scrolling, procrastination, and feeling behind to one of clear, consistent, confident action, authenticity, and freedom.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And this is a bit embarrassing to look back on, but there was this one New Year's Eve where I was overweight in the sense of I didn't like the way my body looked at the time.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: I was drinking a beer in a hot tub with some other people, but in my mind, I was thinking about all the great changes I was going to make next year.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Which the two of those things in contract, it's a pretty hilarious contradiction.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: The thing is that when it got to the end of my years, I would try to subconsciously forget all the commitments that I had made during that year that I hadn't lived up to or completed.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: And then I would promise myself them again on top of new ones, where I'd say, I'm gonna stop scrolling, I'm gonna stop overeating, I'm gonna exercise more consistently.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And it would give myself some amount of relief.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, I'm making a commitment to change these things.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I have a clean slate going to the next year.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: The reality was that my slate was actually whatever foundation had been set up by my actions that previous year.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: So the extra five or 10 pounds on my body, that was my slate.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: That was my starting point.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: The consistently distracted focus, that was where I was starting my slate from.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: The self-image that had stopped supporting me and actually instead started to attack me and shame me in the moments where I felt bad about myself.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: That was the slate I was starting from in those new years.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Not this wonderful new optimistic place, even if in that moment I was kind of fooling myself into believing that I had some new fresh start.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: The reality was that I was consistently entering new years with massive metaphorical sandbags on my shoulders because of the way I ended the previous years.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: My body, my mind, and my self-image were still affected, no matter what I told myself I would do or was possible in the next year.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: And just to be clear, this applies on a smaller scale as well.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: It applies every single day how you end your days, how you end your weeks, your months, not just your years.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So don't allow your mind to persuade yourself that because a new year is coming, it's fine to just let the behaviors that you're not very proud of continue to go on, to keep engaging in them, and then just try again in the new year.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Because by doing that, you're setting yourself up at a disadvantage to make the changes that you want, not at a neutral place.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And that is a surefire way to have next year be the exact same thing.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So imagine that.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: The disappointments you feel right now.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Imagine that feeling.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Right now, in your head, you can probably think of things that you're disappointed with, that you wish went the other way, behaviors you wish you stopped doing or engaging in, all these changes you'd like to make.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: In a year from now, if you allow for them to just continue going on with no change until the end of this year, if you allow the upcoming stress of the end of the year and the holidays and Q4 and all these deadlines and all these things that are going on in your life to mask that emotion and to allow that voice to persuade yourself to not make the necessary changes because you already have so much going on until the end of this year, then the truth is that a year from now, that in September of next year, you will probably be thinking these exact same things, feeling these same disappointments, wanting to make these same changes, still convincing yourself with the same voice and the same living beliefs, and you'll change it next year and the year after that.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: It's a high probability way of making sure that next year, in this moment, you're in the exact same place mentally.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: You're in the exact same place with respect to your behaviors and your self-image and your self-talk and all these things, still feeling behind, still feeling stagnant, still scrolling, still procrastinating, still not pursuing with passion your dreams and your goals.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So let me know, answer this in the comments.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: I'd love to hear.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Have you ever found yourself wanting the exact same goal or behavioral change as you did the previous year, or years before, maybe two, three, four, five years before, finding yourself in the exact same loop of wanting to change something specific in your life, like the procrastination, the scrolling, the overthinking, any of these behavioral changes that you wanted to make.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: If so, just to be clear, there's no shame in it.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: There's no judgment from my end because I've been in the exact same place.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: But what it means is that you likely never took action at a foundational level, where you changed the lifestyle perspectives that lie at the root of the behaviors that you would like to engage in in order to create the success that you're after in this life.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Because the end of the year does not remove the weight of the previous one.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: The only thing that can give you the highest probability of ending this year in a way that makes you proud and setting yourself up in the right way for next year is action right now.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Action in the present moment.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Because right now is how we set ourselves up.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: But if you act like the end of the year changes anything for you and your perspective and your self-image and your confidence and the behavioral changes that you want, you are setting yourself up for disappointment, just like I did so many years in a row.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Anyways, I'm Flint Mitchell from IOIN.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: I hope you appreciated this.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: If this was valuable for you, I would love it if you would share it with just one person you think would also benefit from it.

- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Now, if you've been told your entire life that you're smart and you have potential, but you continue to see yourself not do what you said you would do again and again, and it's made you stop trusting in yourself or that you will ever achieve that potential, I want to help you.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Together, you and I will implement a core value-based system that will help you become decisive and focused.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: I want you to feel the relief from the weight on your shoulders because of the decreased noise in your head.
