- 0:04Speaker 1: Bill's president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, joining the show
- 0:07Speaker 1: right now.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Dave, good to see you.
- 0:08Speaker 3: How you doing, I'm doing fine. How about yourselves?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Very good?
- 0:13Speaker 4: Finally finally we got it. Gosh, I've been chasing this
- 0:16Speaker 4: dude for years. Finally got a fellow Pollock to come
- 0:19Speaker 4: on the show.
- 0:20Speaker 3: I wonder if he was ever unfortunate because that means
- 0:23Speaker 3: we got knocked out of the playoffs, So that's the
- 0:25Speaker 3: unfortunate part of it.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Yes, I didn't want that. I wouldn't want that, but yes,
- 0:29Speaker 4: I'm proud to be final. So thank you for because
- 0:32Speaker 4: I've had to go into other booths to try to
- 0:34Speaker 4: find this guy. I've had to chase down Brian Barber,
- 0:37Speaker 4: I've had to chase down Sam Fold, I've had to
- 0:39Speaker 4: chase down Hora.
- 0:40Speaker 5: What's your name? Hora? Uh Na? Yeah, I had to
- 0:44Speaker 5: chase through him.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I'm like, can we just get to talk to Dave
- 0:47Speaker 2: around He's day guy. Dave. Did you ever try and
- 0:49Speaker 2: acquire a J.
- 0:51Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no, I did not do that. Well,
- 0:56Speaker 3: now you're stuck with I wasn't too many times when
- 0:59Speaker 3: he was with the White Sox, so you beat me too.
- 1:00Speaker 5: Often I wasn't good enough.
- 1:02Speaker 4: You know, he had Victor Martinez and Alex Avila and
- 1:05Speaker 4: all those all star guys.
- 1:06Speaker 5: It just had meat on there, just schlepping away.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Aaron all start to well, So let's get into it.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I mean, first of all, what do you think of
- 1:14Speaker 1: the World Series matchup? Obviously the team that's representing the
- 1:18Speaker 1: National League knocked out your team, So what do you
- 1:20Speaker 1: think you've seen from them?
- 1:23Speaker 3: Well, I hope it's a great series. Have been, of course,
- 1:25Speaker 3: been watching the other league too, with Seattle and Toronto.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I'm watching them play throughout. But the Dodgers are really
- 1:31Speaker 3: good and I think any club that plays them at
- 1:35Speaker 3: this point has has their work cut out for him.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And for me, it's primarily their starting pitching. And their
- 1:40Speaker 3: starting pitching is is top of the level right now,
- 1:43Speaker 3: so if you're scoring runs off of them, you're doing
- 1:45Speaker 3: a pretty good job. The biggest question for me is
- 1:47Speaker 3: with Toronto, Wilso has a very good club. When you
- 1:50Speaker 3: take this one week layoff that the Dodgers are going
- 1:53Speaker 3: to take, that sometimes it does affect your hitters and
- 1:56Speaker 3: will your pitchers hold them down enough to not give
- 1:58Speaker 3: them any runs? Basically, but if you're going to beat
- 2:00Speaker 3: the Dodgers, defending champs, You're going to really play well.
- 2:04Speaker 6: Do you look at that series that when you guys
- 2:06Speaker 6: playing against them, and do you look back and go, man,
- 2:09Speaker 6: because they had a higher payroll, or because of a
- 2:12Speaker 6: move I didn't make, that's why they won, or do
- 2:14Speaker 6: you watch the games and go we were in the
- 2:16Speaker 6: right spot. Our lineup had more hits pitch. Our starting
- 2:22Speaker 6: pitching out pitched their starting pitching, which has gotten all
- 2:25Speaker 6: these flowers the rest of the postseason. You had them
- 2:28Speaker 6: in three of the four categories of baseball except for
- 2:30Speaker 6: the wins and losses.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I look at it more. And it's a great
- 2:34Speaker 3: question because you can look at it so many different ways,
- 2:37Speaker 3: and basically, when you lose, they all break your heart.
- 2:39Speaker 3: But I really looked at that. We went toe to
- 2:42Speaker 3: toe with a really, really good club and we're in
- 2:45Speaker 3: a position where you look at the first game, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 3: a bad pitch, three run homer, and all of a
- 2:50Speaker 3: sudden we lose five to three. The second game, very
- 2:54Speaker 3: unfortunate as far as you know, a bunt that we
- 2:58Speaker 3: put on that didn't work at that particular time, time
- 3:00Speaker 3: run on second base with nobody out in the ninth inning.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Third game, of course we won, and look what happened
- 3:06Speaker 3: in the fourth game. We saw that. As far as
- 3:08Speaker 3: it's so, the way I look at it is and
- 3:10Speaker 3: even in that second game I've talked about it in
- 3:14Speaker 3: the case that they scored four runs in one inning, Well,
- 3:18Speaker 3: perkerm came in, busted, the bat broke, the bat turner
- 3:21Speaker 3: comes in, makes a good play, throws it to the plate.
- 3:24Speaker 3: The ball goes to the first base side of the
- 3:27Speaker 3: plate rather than the third base side, very understandably, he's rushed.
- 3:31Speaker 3: The ball's on the third base side. They don't score
- 3:33Speaker 3: any runs at anything. So it's just that close. And
- 3:36Speaker 3: I look at the difference between us as being very
- 3:39Speaker 3: very small, but yet they beat us. And that's all accounts.
- 3:43Speaker 3: So you got to look at trying to get better
- 3:44Speaker 3: this year and do it any way you possibly can,
- 3:46Speaker 3: because they're not going away, Dave.
- 3:49Speaker 4: I saw John Middleton last week or so, and it
- 3:52Speaker 4: was talking to him and I said to him, I
- 3:55Speaker 4: was like, you know you're going to get one. First
- 3:56Speaker 4: of all, I said, you're going to get one. Just
- 3:58Speaker 4: just say the course, and he you know, it gives
- 4:00Speaker 4: you that look like I hope so right, But then
- 4:02Speaker 4: he brought up the strike three with Sanchez, the one
- 4:05Speaker 4: that was called the ball in the abs and all that,
- 4:07Speaker 4: and I've heard your.
- 4:08Speaker 5: Comments on that.
- 4:09Speaker 4: I mean, if that ball, if that strike three goes
- 4:11Speaker 4: the other way, then you don't have the inning with
- 4:13Speaker 4: the whole thing where they tie the game, and then
- 4:15Speaker 4: the kirkering thing doesn't probably happen. Do you feel that,
- 4:17Speaker 4: I know you've said it, but do you really feel
- 4:19Speaker 4: that way that if the umpire calls that ball in
- 4:22Speaker 4: strike three, then that changes?
- 4:23Speaker 5: It's two two.
- 4:24Speaker 4: You guys come back to Philly and anything happen because man,
- 4:26Speaker 4: Christopher Sanchez pitched awesome that night.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, you never know how it's going to go.
- 4:31Speaker 3: I mean, it might make a difference. At a particular time,
- 4:34Speaker 3: I was thinking back and this was you guys don't
- 4:37Speaker 3: remember this, but in two thousand and nine, I was
- 4:40Speaker 3: with the Tigers and we played the Minnesota Twins in
- 4:43Speaker 3: Game one sixty three.
- 4:44Speaker 2: We tied.
- 4:46Speaker 3: We played in Minnesota, we lost the game. We lost
- 4:48Speaker 3: it in an extra innings and there was a pitch
- 4:50Speaker 3: that hit Brandon Inge that would have given us a
- 4:52Speaker 3: two run lead, and the home played umpire at that time.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Randy Marsh tremendous umpire, good umpire. We didn't have replay
- 4:59Speaker 3: at that time, saw the replay afterwards and was heartbroken
- 5:03Speaker 3: because he missed the call would have given us. It
- 5:06Speaker 3: had been a different game at that point, we would
- 5:08Speaker 3: have gone into potentially at that point of everything else
- 5:11Speaker 3: would have follow a pattern. We'd have gone on and
- 5:12Speaker 3: played in the alcs at that time. So our alds
- 5:17Speaker 3: at that time. So you never know what's going to
- 5:19Speaker 3: happen from there, but it gives you a better chance,
- 5:21Speaker 3: of course, because it keeps you alive at that particular time.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Have you had a personal conversation with Kirkering? Have you?
- 5:28Speaker 6: And do you guys have something with the organization in
- 5:30Speaker 6: place to check in with them, because I think there's
- 5:33Speaker 6: a lot of people Dodgers and Phillies fans and baseball
- 5:36Speaker 6: fans who are heartbroken for the kid.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yeah. I feel terrible for him, and he's a quality
- 5:41Speaker 3: kid and he's a good pitcher. Yes, I spoke to
- 5:43Speaker 3: him after the game. I spoke to him and got
- 5:45Speaker 3: back here. We do have the type of support system
- 5:48Speaker 3: that will stay in contact with them throughout the winter time.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I think you need to have him a little time
- 5:52Speaker 3: to breathe, but for sure we will definitely do that
- 5:55Speaker 3: because I'm sure he's heartbroken too. Again, tough kid, but
- 5:59Speaker 3: we need they have the type of support system and
- 6:01Speaker 3: we do within the organization, from the mental end of it,
- 6:04Speaker 3: from the poaching end of it, from the front office
- 6:06Speaker 3: end of it, that we'll all stay in contact with
- 6:08Speaker 3: him and make sure that he's doing as well as
- 6:10Speaker 3: he possibly can't.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Dave, by the way, that I hate to bring up
- 6:13Speaker 4: bad memories at two thousand and nine game once, that
- 6:15Speaker 4: was an awesome game. I know, the guys lost. That
- 6:17Speaker 4: was extra innings. I mean, that was an awesome game.
- 6:20Speaker 5: And and the.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Umpires they hated y'all before replay Between that and the
- 6:23Speaker 4: Andres Galaraga Perfect Game that, I mean, man, you'll had
- 6:26Speaker 4: y'all had.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Some terrible calls.
- 6:28Speaker 4: I'm sorry, no, yes, I mean then you had the date.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Oh you had the David Artis.
- 6:35Speaker 4: I mean, I'm just thinking about because obviously I know
- 6:37Speaker 4: all these because I was in the I was in
- 6:38Speaker 4: the central for AWL, like they had the David Ortiz
- 6:41Speaker 4: Grand Slam or Tory Hunter almost killed. I mean, there
- 6:44Speaker 4: was like, gosh, dang, I look back and and the
- 6:46Speaker 4: thing for me about what I know you're with the
- 6:48Speaker 4: Phillies now, but when I look back on the Tigers,
- 6:50Speaker 4: how close you guys were a year and in year out,
- 6:53Speaker 4: like to just finally getting over the eighty four, right,
- 6:57Speaker 4: I mean twelve you lost to the Giants thirteen obvious
- 7:00Speaker 4: see the Red Sox.
- 7:01Speaker 5: I mean, oh, I'm just like, gosh, if I was,
- 7:04Speaker 5: I'm like, you get so close and you just oh.
- 7:07Speaker 3: You're as you know, the game breaks your heart, right
- 7:11Speaker 3: is what it does more than that's what makes winning,
- 7:13Speaker 3: so you know, feel so great. And I'll go back
- 7:16Speaker 3: in my own and you look at the Braves when
- 7:18Speaker 3: they won the one World championship. She just telling the
- 7:21Speaker 3: guys here, we're looking at eleven in the last fourteen
- 7:24Speaker 3: years I've been with the club that's been the postseason
- 7:25Speaker 3: right one time we want well, I mean ten other
- 7:29Speaker 3: time you went home with your heart broken. Sometimes you
- 7:32Speaker 3: think you have a club that should win it. Sometimes
- 7:34Speaker 3: you always feel you can win it, but you also
- 7:36Speaker 3: know that sometimes you're facing somebody that is just a
- 7:39Speaker 3: better team, and you do your best to win it,
- 7:41Speaker 3: but so many heartbreaks, and that's just you have to
- 7:45Speaker 3: bounce back. You have to come back the next year.
- 7:46Speaker 3: You have to regroup and try to get yourself better.
- 7:49Speaker 3: But it doesn't do you any good to just keep
- 7:51Speaker 3: on crying over them, because we'd be crying a lot.
- 7:54Speaker 3: So you have to move forward.
- 7:56Speaker 5: All right.
- 7:56Speaker 6: We buttered you up with the easy ones. Now I'm
- 7:58Speaker 6: going to ask you the hard one. From the player's
- 8:01Speaker 6: point of view, your comments about Bryce do you feel
- 8:06Speaker 6: like they were misconstrued? Because we talked about it on
- 8:08Speaker 6: here and I was kind of like, I don't know,
- 8:10Speaker 6: maybe it's a little motivation. Which do you feel like
- 8:13Speaker 6: your comments about him, you know, not being elite right
- 8:17Speaker 6: now or if he'll ever get back to being elite
- 8:20Speaker 6: because you are honest and we appreciate honesty in baseball.
- 8:24Speaker 6: That is like the greatest trait besides hitting homers.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Well, and it's of course got a life of its own.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I said so many things in a one hour press conference,
- 8:33Speaker 3: and this is the one thing that gets out there.
- 8:35Speaker 3: First of all, I mean, to me, Bryce Harper is
- 8:38Speaker 3: one of the best players in the game of baseball.
- 8:40Speaker 3: And when I say he didn't have it, they asked
- 8:43Speaker 3: me what type of year did you think he had?
- 8:46Speaker 3: And I said, he had a very good year. I
- 8:48Speaker 3: don't think he had an elite year. And when I
- 8:51Speaker 3: say that, when I think of Bryce Harper, it's a
- 8:55Speaker 3: compliment because the reality is, there are I don't know
- 8:58Speaker 3: eight ten players in the game of baseball every year
- 9:01Speaker 3: when they're not, let's say, in the MVP consideration for
- 9:05Speaker 3: whatever reason. Sometimes it can be an injury factor. Sometimes
- 9:08Speaker 3: they just have a bad year, but whatever it's it's
- 9:11Speaker 3: not an elite year for them. So the reality is
- 9:14Speaker 3: is that he's a great player, He's a future Hall
- 9:16Speaker 3: of Famer. This thing's got a life of its own.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Now.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I've been reading that all the Phillies made trade Bryce Harper.
- 9:22Speaker 3: That couldn't be further from the truth. We love him.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I think he's a great player. He's a very important
- 9:26Speaker 3: part of our team. I've seen him have better years.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I look for him to have better years, but I
- 9:31Speaker 3: think what ends up happening, This is not meant for him.
- 9:35Speaker 3: And I was reading an article yesterday. It wasn't about Bryce,
- 9:39Speaker 3: was actually about Kyle Schwarber that Mike Schmidt talked about,
- 9:42Speaker 3: and I thought it was so good, And I was
- 9:45Speaker 3: looking back at my Miguel Cabrera days, probably the best
- 9:49Speaker 3: as good a player that I've been around year in
- 9:52Speaker 3: year out, and he got to thirty three and he
- 9:55Speaker 3: had won the Triple Crown. He had been the MVP
- 9:57Speaker 3: two years a gow and he wasn't quite the same player. Well,
- 10:01Speaker 3: Mike Schmid's comments because I asked him about Kyle, said,
- 10:03Speaker 3: you're getting into your middle thirties, moving a little bit
- 10:06Speaker 3: into your late thirties. If you can stay healthy, continue
- 10:09Speaker 3: a really really strong workout program in the off season,
- 10:12Speaker 3: your flexibility has to be there. Your batspeed opoly obviously,
- 10:16Speaker 3: has to stay up. Your eyes have to stay You've
- 10:18Speaker 3: got to be able to see have a twenty twenty
- 10:20Speaker 3: vision when I played, and it's more important to get
- 10:22Speaker 3: good insight eyesight as you go along, there's a lot
- 10:25Speaker 3: of non mechanical baseball swing issues. They have to stay right.
- 10:28Speaker 3: So basically that's what happens with every player. I mean
- 10:32Speaker 3: the reality now, I'll take my chances with Bryce more
- 10:35Speaker 3: than most because Bryce is an elite talent, and he's
- 10:38Speaker 3: a very very talented individual and he's driven. So I
- 10:42Speaker 3: think that it's a shame where this has gone because
- 10:46Speaker 3: it wasn't meant to be a criticism. It was just
- 10:47Speaker 3: he didn't have a to me. And when you talk
- 10:50Speaker 3: about Bryce, and again it's a few other guys when
- 10:53Speaker 3: they aren't in the MVP considerations, well it's probably not
- 10:56Speaker 3: as good a your as that they've had other times.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Right, So does that mean you're signing him to an extension?
- 11:02Speaker 4: Because remember when the last we we wanted an extension.
- 11:04Speaker 4: So I mean, just just keep signing them.
- 11:06Speaker 5: I mean, why not, it's not your money, just kind
- 11:08Speaker 5: of way.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Fortunately, he's already got a long contract with us, so
- 11:12Speaker 3: I'm pretty good.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Okay, all right, that's fair, that's fair.
- 11:15Speaker 4: But you know he's looking for those you know, to
- 11:17Speaker 4: play at least fifties, so he wants, you know, ten
- 11:19Speaker 4: more years or whatever.
- 11:20Speaker 5: He was out there. I hope it happens.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I hope it happens for him.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes, you just don't want to be the
- 11:25Speaker 4: guy to sign him in case it does happen, because
- 11:27Speaker 4: then you know, it could be it could be your
- 11:28Speaker 4: neck on the line.
- 11:29Speaker 3: But I get it.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I know you.
- 11:32Speaker 3: My neck's been on the line before, so it wouldn't
- 11:34Speaker 3: be the first time.
- 11:35Speaker 4: And listen, we're both in the Polish Sports Hall of Fame, Okay,
- 11:39Speaker 4: so we see each other. Okay, we get that's right,
- 11:42Speaker 4: that's right, right, all right? What about the other guys
- 11:45Speaker 4: that are free agents. Schwarber obviously is the big name,
- 11:48Speaker 4: but Ranger Swaz has been great for your real muto
- 11:51Speaker 4: is there. Do you know your payroll yet, as mister
- 11:53Speaker 4: Middleton come to you and said, hey, Dave, this is
- 11:56Speaker 4: what you're going to have and this is what we
- 11:58Speaker 4: have to work around.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Or does that happen later in the offseason.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Well, every owner is different. With whom I worked, John
- 12:05Speaker 3: and I stay in close contact with that. We know
- 12:07Speaker 3: it's a really big winter time for us. So we've
- 12:09Speaker 3: been talking about this for weeks and I propose something
- 12:13Speaker 3: to him. He's given me an approval on it. So
- 12:16Speaker 3: I know where my payroll is and it's still a
- 12:18Speaker 3: very hefty payroll. But I still think it's a challenge.
- 12:21Speaker 3: It's going to be hard to sign all of our
- 12:23Speaker 3: players just because there's so many of them, and we're
- 12:26Speaker 3: also challenged with some younger players that finally in our
- 12:30Speaker 3: system are ready to step in and play for us.
- 12:32Speaker 3: After a couple whiles, a guy like Justin Crawford Andrew
- 12:36Speaker 3: Pater we feel will be ready to play with us.
- 12:38Speaker 5: This year.
- 12:38Speaker 3: We've got a young kid by named Aidan Miller. That
- 12:41Speaker 3: was a number one pick. That's been very, very talented individuals.
- 12:43Speaker 3: So we're going to have it's gonna be a tough winner.
- 12:46Speaker 3: We're gonna have to do a lot of balancing. I
- 12:47Speaker 3: think we have a chance to still really have a
- 12:49Speaker 3: good club because I think we'll bring some of the
- 12:51Speaker 3: guys back, We'll have financial wherewithal and I think anytime
- 12:54Speaker 3: you can have a system, Wheeler should be back. Anytime
- 12:57Speaker 3: you can throw Wheeler, you can throw Sanchez, you can
- 13:00Speaker 3: throws Blizardo, you can throw Nola as your top four.
- 13:03Speaker 3: No matter what happens with sures, you're in pretty good
- 13:05Speaker 3: shape to move forward.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Do you have an update on Wheeler where he's at
- 13:10Speaker 6: with his rehab but also as far as where he's
- 13:13Speaker 6: at if this blood clot situation was completely taken care
- 13:16Speaker 6: of and won't reoccur after they took the rib out
- 13:19Speaker 6: in the thoracic.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Out, Yes, I do, because I saw him the other
- 13:23Speaker 3: day was actually down I think it was Tuesday, was
- 13:25Speaker 3: down in the clubhouse. So he's going to be in
- 13:27Speaker 3: Philadelphia all wintertime. Our head athletic trainer, Paul Bukite was
- 13:31Speaker 3: working with him at that particular day, so I chatted
- 13:34Speaker 3: with him. He showed me his scars. He feels no pain,
- 13:38Speaker 3: he said, he feels great. They're now getting to the
- 13:41Speaker 3: point where they need some more flexibility with them, and
- 13:45Speaker 3: they should. This should have cleared it up. They're not
- 13:47Speaker 3: anticipating any setbacks, not expecting this to crow once again.
- 13:51Speaker 3: So he's in a solid position now. The timing will be,
- 13:54Speaker 3: it was given to us from six to eight months
- 13:56Speaker 3: that he will be ready again. He's a gift gifted athlete.
- 14:00Speaker 3: He's elite and his talent his jeans just like Bryce
- 14:05Speaker 3: is in their regard. So we're hopeful it'll be on
- 14:07Speaker 3: the front end, which would even get him ready for
- 14:09Speaker 3: opening Day. But right now he's doing very good and
- 14:12Speaker 3: he's going to stay here all winter, committed to getting
- 14:14Speaker 3: ready as soon as he possibly can.
- 14:16Speaker 6: That's great to hear somebody coming back from something like that.
- 14:19Speaker 6: You had mentioned late in the game kind of somewhat
- 14:22Speaker 6: killed you earlier in the season in the playoffs. Late
- 14:25Speaker 6: in the game, kind of killed you guys a little
- 14:27Speaker 6: bit there. Earlier earlier in the season, Jose Alvarado tested
- 14:31Speaker 6: positive for PD and can you tell me your reaction
- 14:37Speaker 6: to that? In a sense of anger, sadness, you know,
- 14:41Speaker 6: the fact that we're you know, you're, you're you as
- 14:44Speaker 6: a team are building kind of around him. Also to
- 14:47Speaker 6: be a big piece of that late inning and then
- 14:50Speaker 6: the season ends where you guys lose kind of late
- 14:54Speaker 6: in the game. It would have been nice to have
- 14:55Speaker 6: a Jose Alvarado you have an option. Do you feel
- 14:59Speaker 6: the drug test, the positive drug test will will come
- 15:02Speaker 6: into the decision of resigning him picking up his option
- 15:06Speaker 6: or not.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Yeah. I think when you talk about the emotions at
- 15:09Speaker 3: the time, I think I would describe as all of them.
- 15:11Speaker 3: You know, you're upset because here you go, you're top
- 15:14Speaker 3: reliever at that time, is getting suspended. You're angry. I'm
- 15:18Speaker 3: also then have a good relationship with Jose and between
- 15:22Speaker 3: he and then Jorge val Andy we came in. I
- 15:23Speaker 3: got the whole story from his perspective. There was a
- 15:26Speaker 3: part of me that felt sad for him because I
- 15:30Speaker 3: don't think he was trying to do anything that. I mean,
- 15:33Speaker 3: when you look at Jose Alvarado, the last thing he
- 15:35Speaker 3: needs to do is get stronger. He's trying to lose
- 15:38Speaker 3: weight on it because he's as strong as an ox.
- 15:41Speaker 3: So I felt bad for Himnett and I knew when
- 15:43Speaker 3: he came back it was very tough to get ready
- 15:45Speaker 3: than and pitched. So I don't think that the testing
- 15:49Speaker 3: perspective will affect us what goes into the wintertime decision.
- 15:52Speaker 3: We have to decide what we want to do with that.
- 15:54Speaker 3: But I'll be surprised if he's not back with us,
- 15:56Speaker 3: And yoh, it breaks your heart. I mean, but it's
- 15:58Speaker 3: one of those the other the other part with it
- 16:00Speaker 3: for a while. Like with us, we got Duran at
- 16:03Speaker 3: the trading deadline. He did a fantastic job for us,
- 16:05Speaker 3: and we signed David Robertson, who pitched well for us,
- 16:08Speaker 3: and then maybe a little bit less later in the year.
- 16:11Speaker 3: But we had felt that one of our left handed
- 16:14Speaker 3: relievers would be able to go into the bullpen for
- 16:17Speaker 3: us and help us in the postseason because we had Wheeler,
- 16:21Speaker 3: we had Sworas, we had Lizarda, we had Sanchez. We
- 16:24Speaker 3: all of a sudden, when Wheeler went down, that also
- 16:27Speaker 3: eliminated that possibility. So there's just so much that goes
- 16:31Speaker 3: into the overall aspect of how you put your club together.
- 16:34Speaker 3: But I think of all of a sudden, we had
- 16:35Speaker 3: one of those guys coming out of the bullpen too.
- 16:37Speaker 3: You never know how again things would take place, but
- 16:40Speaker 3: we didn't.

- 17:46Speaker 4: Dave, How don't you can't you come up with your
- 17:48Speaker 4: philosophy because I love it. I mean you you will
- 17:50Speaker 4: go to win every year? Right, You're like prospects, You're
- 17:52Speaker 4: like Aj Preller Jan Diego. Now you keep you keep
- 17:55Speaker 4: them around a little bit more maybe than Preller does.
- 17:58Speaker 4: But you're like, I'm going for it. Listen, we have
- 18:01Speaker 4: to trade our fourth and third and second best prospect,
- 18:03Speaker 4: and we might keep paying, we might keep Miller, but
- 18:06Speaker 4: we're going to trade everyone else and go get the
- 18:07Speaker 4: guys we need. I love that as a former player.
- 18:10Speaker 4: How come more gms aren't like that? And they always
- 18:12Speaker 4: want to say, well, ten years from now, you know
- 18:14Speaker 4: our seventeenth best prospect.
- 18:16Speaker 5: First of all, no team has seventeen prospects, but our.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Seventeenth best prospect might be a bench guy for us
- 18:21Speaker 4: in ten years.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Well.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I was lucky when I first started in baseball, and
- 18:25Speaker 3: I started with the White Sox. Roland Heima was the
- 18:27Speaker 3: general manager, and he was my mentor, great baseball man,
- 18:31Speaker 3: and he basically it puts into your mind you don't
- 18:33Speaker 3: have a chance to win all the time, so within reason,
- 18:37Speaker 3: if you have a chance to win, you go for it.
- 18:39Speaker 3: And that's really been my philosophy. Now when I say that,
- 18:42Speaker 3: within reason you want to keep some prospects, I remember
- 18:45Speaker 3: way back when we had Justin Verlander and people were
- 18:47Speaker 3: offered me pretty good big league players for him. I said, well,
- 18:50Speaker 3: I don't think we're going to trade Verlander. So you
- 18:53Speaker 3: do that, but you don't want that web to be
- 18:55Speaker 3: too large because you're in a position where the reality
- 18:58Speaker 3: is a lot of them don't make it. Just be
- 19:02Speaker 3: quality big league players. They may make it to the
- 19:04Speaker 3: big leagues. So just juggling that act all the time.
- 19:07Speaker 3: And then of course you have to have ownership support,
- 19:09Speaker 3: so you work closely with ownership if you're with the club.
- 19:12Speaker 3: I'm way back when I was with in the beginning,
- 19:15Speaker 3: when I was with the Florida Marlins back at that time,
- 19:18Speaker 3: we were looking to build at that particular time because
- 19:21Speaker 3: we're starting from scratch, so you're looking with a different philosophy.
- 19:25Speaker 3: But when you have a chance to win and you
- 19:27Speaker 3: can go for it within reason, and I think you
- 19:29Speaker 3: also a lot of people forget if you're going to
- 19:32Speaker 3: get quality, you have to give quality. And so a
- 19:37Speaker 3: lot of times people want to get somebody that's really good,
- 19:40Speaker 3: but they don't want to give anybody up. And that's
- 19:43Speaker 3: tough to do. If you can, you know, bless you
- 19:45Speaker 3: and make that type of deal, but it doesn't happen
- 19:47Speaker 3: very often.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Agreed agreed, so you brought it up. I was going
- 19:50Speaker 4: to wait till the end. But since you brought him
- 19:52Speaker 4: up the White Sox, Okay, I know rolling him and
- 19:54Speaker 4: he I I've known him forever.
- 19:56Speaker 5: Okay.
- 19:57Speaker 4: But the question I want to know is, there's two
- 19:59Speaker 4: things to usa. Was fired by Hawk, You were let
- 20:03Speaker 4: go by Hawk, Okay, how come Jerry didn't bring you
- 20:06Speaker 4: back like he did with Tony to g be the
- 20:09Speaker 4: GM president of Baseball ops. And then, second of all,
- 20:11Speaker 4: I don't know this, and I've done Hawk since I
- 20:13Speaker 4: was in high school, so I've done Hawk for thirty
- 20:15Speaker 4: five years.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Are you and him talk? Are you guys friends? Because
- 20:18Speaker 5: I don't know. I don't know the answer to this question.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Well, I guess Jerry thought Tony was better than me.
- 20:24Speaker 3: That's probably why. So that's probably why I did that
- 20:27Speaker 3: at that particular time. And I have a good relationship
- 20:30Speaker 3: with Jerry, so he's been very good to me throughout
- 20:33Speaker 3: my career and been very very nice. In Hawk's case,
- 20:36Speaker 3: there really was a long time in which I did
- 20:40Speaker 3: not speak with him. You know, I would say hi
- 20:42Speaker 3: to him because we passed each other. He is a
- 20:44Speaker 3: broadcaster with the White Sox and me with the other
- 20:47Speaker 3: organizations with primarily with Detroit during that time period. But
- 20:51Speaker 3: there was a when I went to Boston. I remember
- 20:53Speaker 3: he called me about something to congratulate me, and we
- 20:57Speaker 3: talked for a while. And so I'm not you know,
- 21:00Speaker 3: like Tony Larus and I are very good friends. Jimmy
- 21:02Speaker 3: Leelan and I are very good friends. We talk on
- 21:04Speaker 3: the phone all the time. I'm not like that with Hawk,
- 21:06Speaker 3: but if Hawk was here, I would have very civil
- 21:08Speaker 3: conversation with them and respect what he accomplished in the game.
- 21:13Speaker 6: I got one question for you with Topper. You guys,
- 21:17Speaker 6: we hear all the time about oh, they got changed
- 21:19Speaker 6: something up. You know, this team wins in the regular season,
- 21:22Speaker 6: they don't win in the postseason. I would disagree with
- 21:25Speaker 6: that because there has been wins. It's just been close games.
- 21:28Speaker 6: Do you guys ever talk with Topper about changing the
- 21:31Speaker 6: lineup up for the playoffs or if that was the case,
- 21:35Speaker 6: you change the lineup for the regular season and then
- 21:37Speaker 6: you just go into the playoffs and hope you win.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Yeah, we talk about that. We talk about a lot
- 21:43Speaker 3: of different things a lot of times, and I basically
- 21:45Speaker 3: say we talk about everything. I always leave who I
- 21:48Speaker 3: look at I leave the manager's decisions to make the
- 21:50Speaker 3: lineup up my responsibility to supply the players for him.
- 21:55Speaker 3: But I'm in a position where we were very closely together.
- 21:58Speaker 3: We give them all the information he wants. We do
- 22:02Speaker 3: talk a lot of times it's the matchup of the team.
- 22:05Speaker 3: For example, this year, we talked about as we went on,
- 22:08Speaker 3: should we split the two left handed hitters Harper and
- 22:11Speaker 3: Schwarber because it makes us somewhat susceptible to left handed
- 22:15Speaker 3: pitching when you do that. Talked about it, but the
- 22:17Speaker 3: reality after we looked into it, there are two of
- 22:20Speaker 3: our better hitters against left hand pitching, and they hit
- 22:22Speaker 3: left hand pitching very well. So you talk about those
- 22:25Speaker 3: type of things all the time, and you look at
- 22:27Speaker 3: the other club's bullpen, you look how they shape up
- 22:29Speaker 3: what they might match up against you late in the game.
- 22:31Speaker 3: And Topper is on top of all of those type things.
- 22:34Speaker 3: So he's really got a good feel of that, and
- 22:36Speaker 3: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, as we know, and
- 22:39Speaker 3: I've been around some great managers that make decisions that
- 22:43Speaker 3: don't work at a particular time, but doesn't take away
- 22:46Speaker 3: about how good that they do their job.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Dave, as we get to the World Series, would you
- 22:52Speaker 4: play Boba shit? And how do you judge if you
- 22:54Speaker 4: can play a guy or not? Because it's kind of
- 22:56Speaker 4: one of the major topics going to the World Series.
- 22:58Speaker 4: You had Trey Turner had the hamstring, came back for
- 23:00Speaker 4: the playoffs. Boba Shit's been out since I think September
- 23:03Speaker 4: sixth thish fifth sixth this so it's been almost six
- 23:06Speaker 4: weeks now. How do you judge if a player is
- 23:08Speaker 4: ready to play, especially a position like shortstop where you
- 23:11Speaker 4: need movement?
- 23:13Speaker 3: Right, I can't speak for both because of course don't
- 23:15Speaker 3: know enough about his particular situation. But like for us
- 23:18Speaker 3: with Trey, what we do is you want to make
- 23:20Speaker 3: sure can he play hard, is he healthy? Can he
- 23:24Speaker 3: give you what you need? So, for example, part of
- 23:25Speaker 3: Trey's equation was the speed that he brings to the game,
- 23:29Speaker 3: So over the time period, wanted to make sure that
- 23:31Speaker 3: we worked with him to make sure that he could run,
- 23:34Speaker 3: and then we brought pictures in to actually face him.
- 23:37Speaker 3: He used the machines and all that, but we brought
- 23:39Speaker 3: some pictures from the minor leagues that were pretty good,
- 23:41Speaker 3: so he could see live pitching at that time. So
- 23:44Speaker 3: really the evaluation is can he play up to the
- 23:47Speaker 3: level where he's not going to hurt him You never
- 23:49Speaker 3: want a guy to hurt themselves, but can you play
- 23:51Speaker 3: up to a level that will contribute to us without
- 23:53Speaker 3: hurting himself? And then you really I mean we watched
- 23:56Speaker 3: him run. He ran very well. He got better and
- 23:59Speaker 3: better as time went on, and his swing got better
- 24:01Speaker 3: and better as time went on the time he got better,
- 24:04Speaker 3: So I think it's an evaluation. Then you then, of course,
- 24:08Speaker 3: if you play a guy and depending what the injury is,
- 24:11Speaker 3: will you hurt yourself worse? If you think the guy's
- 24:14Speaker 3: going to hurt himself a lot worse, you're probably going
- 24:17Speaker 3: to stay away from that too. But when you start
- 24:20Speaker 3: talking about people like Turner and Bashett, they're tremendous players.
- 24:23Speaker 3: So sometimes seventy five or eighty percent of them might
- 24:26Speaker 3: be better than somebody else that's one hundred percent. So
- 24:29Speaker 3: those are all the type of things that you go
- 24:30Speaker 3: and play. And I rely a great deal on our
- 24:33Speaker 3: medical staff. Our medical staff's outstanding and they know what
- 24:37Speaker 3: it takes. So they've been around for a long time,
- 24:39Speaker 3: and so between them, our doctors, they give you a
- 24:42Speaker 3: pulse of hey, I feel comfortable to go ahead and
- 24:44Speaker 3: play this guy. It's not a problem. He'll be okay
- 24:47Speaker 3: or hey, I'd be careful because I don't I think
- 24:50Speaker 3: if he runs full boor he's going to be in
- 24:51Speaker 3: a position where he blows it out.
- 24:54Speaker 2: It's great insight, Dave, thanks so much for joining us.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Hope you enjoyed it. Look at the smile on AJS.
- 25:00Speaker 4: Anytime we can get fellow Polish Hall of famers on
- 25:02Speaker 4: the show, we need more of them, so I'm happy
- 25:04Speaker 4: to talk to those people.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Thanks. I'm glow. We can make it. Thanks for having me.
- 25:08Speaker 3: I appreciate it.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah, you were great.
- 25:10Speaker 5: And give Brian barbera raised for me. Okay, and tell
- 25:13Speaker 5: him I said that.
- 25:15Speaker 3: I'll tell them. He'll appreciate that, so I'll see perfect.
- 25:19Speaker 3: All right. Thanks for having me a good one.
- 25:21Speaker 2: That was great.
- 25:22Speaker 1: We got to get more GMS on now. That gets
- 25:24Speaker 1: me cranking again, thinking like we need to get more
- 25:26Speaker 1: GMS on. Some are so methodical, and then there's guys
- 25:31Speaker 1: like Dave who just talk like a normal person and
- 25:34Speaker 1: he's great. It's probably out of thirty, how many do
- 25:41Speaker 1: you think are like Dave these days?
- 25:43Speaker 2: And thoughtless?
- 25:44Speaker 1: We don't have to go through all the names, but
- 25:45Speaker 1: those kind of guys where when you talk to them,
- 25:47Speaker 1: you feel like you're talking to a person, and it's
- 25:49Speaker 1: not a calculated job interview where they use all the bezzwords.
- 25:54Speaker 1: You think ten so ten that really have the chops,
- 25:58Speaker 1: and then twenty that.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Are like.
- 26:01Speaker 6: Maybe fifteen maybe maybe fifteen because without even without even
- 26:06Speaker 6: thinking about it, that I can think definitely have the personalities.
- 26:10Speaker 6: And I think the personality of a GM. I know
- 26:12Speaker 6: it's player of Baseball Operations, president of baseball operations, but
- 26:16Speaker 6: the GM it's the same, it's the same job. But
- 26:21Speaker 6: they used to be like very arrogant, very like stand
- 26:24Speaker 6: off fish. They never were in the clubhouse. Now that
- 26:27Speaker 6: role has completely changed, even even since I started playing,
- 26:32Speaker 6: which I don't feel like has been that long ago.
- 26:36Speaker 1: My thing is there is a psychology component that keeps
- 26:40Speaker 1: getting amplified with anyone in management in baseball, would you
- 26:45Speaker 1: agree more psychology now than.
- 26:48Speaker 4: They And nobody wants to give anything away, and nobody
- 26:50Speaker 4: wants to tell you anything.
- 26:51Speaker 2: It's like weird, it's calculated.
- 26:53Speaker 4: Everything is everyone has to speaking and Dave is real dude,
- 26:56Speaker 4: like he's just telling us it's great.
- 26:58Speaker 5: I think we've had a couple.
- 27:00Speaker 4: Uh the guy in Cincinnati, uh Cral Yeah, he was awesome.
- 27:04Speaker 5: JJ Pickelo we've had him on.
- 27:06Speaker 6: Yeah, great, Arnold's great, yep Drop is great, and Anthopolis
- 27:13Speaker 6: is great.
- 27:14Speaker 5: Dave obviously, I tell you who we need to get on.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Scott Harris. Scott Harris, the Tigers guy. Yeah Brown, Yeah, oh.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Dana Brown's good. Yeah, we gotta get Scott Harris.
- 27:24Speaker 1: We gotta get Brian Cashman.
- 27:28Speaker 4: I can I can maybe get a hold of uh,
- 27:31Speaker 4: I mean, I can maybe try and get Scott Harris,
- 27:32Speaker 4: but uh yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 5: Friedman was great. You know else was great.
- 27:35Speaker 4: Neander when we had him in spring training with his
- 27:37Speaker 4: bucket had ar. These guys are good if you can
- 27:40Speaker 4: get him.
- 27:42Speaker 3: David.
- 27:42Speaker 4: David turns every time I see him. I kind of
- 27:44Speaker 4: laugh because I'm like, will you give me an answer?
- 27:46Speaker 4: You're going to give me a GM talk.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:48Speaker 5: He's like, well, you know how it is, And I'm like, no,
- 27:50Speaker 5: come on, he's.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Got a long term I'm saying he should be more comfortable.
- 27:54Speaker 5: Brandon Bones was awesome when he came on.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Brandon, those sometimes will be very with stuff. We got,
- 28:00Speaker 1: you guys got him going a little bit. Sometimes he
- 28:02Speaker 1: can be fuck to crack on.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Infot relievers are easy to correct.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Especial way he's played against him m HM
