Jeanette: In the very end, we are still treating a human being.
0:02
Not just a tooth.
0:03
Goerge: You founded the Artius Dental Group.
0:06
What has been one of your most decisive moments in your career?
0:10
Jeanette: He showed me this traditional carousel slide and said, pick.
0:15
Which one is the implant?
0:16
And I could not.
0:17
And that was the defining moment that I realized my God, implants are going to
0:23
change the way we practice dentistry.
0:26
And I still saw a lot of patients with periodontal disease.
0:29
They are not treated properly, are not given the options of having implants.
0:33
That's really unfair to them.
0:35
And that's when we have to move on.
0:37
And that was one of the most defining moments in my career
0:41
where it changed my life.
0:56
Goerge: Welcome to Straumann ProTalk, the Pulse of Dentistry.
0:59
My name is George Raeber, and today I'm very pleased to be
1:02
co-hosted by Dr. Christian Jerry.
1:04
Chris, welcome to this episode of ProTalk.
1:07
I'm super happy to have you with us.
1:09
And Chris, actually for good reasons is jumping in for Andrea Utz because stick
1:13
around, he has to make an announcement at the end of this episode, so there
1:17
will be even more content coming your way in the form of ProTalks.
1:23
Now, Chris and I we're both very pleased and honored to welcome Dr.
1:27
Jeanette Chua here with us today.
1:29
So welcome Jeanette.
1:30
Jeanette: Thank you.
1:30
Thank you George.
1:31
Thank you Dr. George, and thank you Christian.
1:34
Goerge: Jeanette, it's a great pleasure to have you with us.
1:36
You actually are traveling Europe right now.
1:38
Jeanette: Yes.
1:39
Goerge: And you will soon be heading off to Paris, but we didn't want
1:42
to miss the opportunity to actually have a conversation with you today.
1:45
Jeanette: Thank you.
1:46
Goerge: So when I looked at your cv, I was very impressed with what you
1:50
already achieved in the past time.
1:52
And in the beginning, you oscillated a big back and forth between Australia,
1:56
melbourne and also Singapore.
1:58
Yes.
1:59
So you got your first dental degree.
2:01
Then you practiced in Singapore, but then you also went back to Australia to get
2:05
a commercial education as I understood.
2:07
Jeanette: Master's in Applied Commerce.
2:09
Goerge: Yeah, that probably comes in handy later on in your career.
2:13
Then you actually went to Loma Linda University, school of Dentistry where
2:17
you got your specialty education in Implantology and also advanced
2:22
periodontology amongst many other I would say education elements.
2:26
You are a board certified periodontist.
2:30
When you got back then to Asia, you started founding your own clinic.
2:34
And in 2015, if I'm not mistaken you founded the Artius Dental Group.
2:40
Yes.
2:40
And now this is comprising more than eight clinics in Kuala Lumpur and
2:44
Round, and you're also have co-branded clinics in Singapore, in Thailand,
2:49
and recently also in Paris, in France.
2:52
So very, I would say an interesting journey that you undertook.
2:58
We also would like to talk in this episode, besides
3:01
that, a bit about education.
3:03
Because you're a very passionate educator and also here, you
3:07
founded your own institute.
3:08
It has a very nice Italian name.
3:10
It's the Ancora Imparo.
3:12
Jeanette: That's right.
3:13
Goerge: Education Center, which stands for, I'm still learning and
3:16
it is a testimony of continuous learning journey that you take as
3:21
very important, I think in your life.
3:23
Jeanette: Yes.
3:24
Goerge: Now, besides all of these elements that probably people can
3:27
read in, see these, for those who don't know you personally Jeanette.
3:31
Who are you in?
3:32
Just one minute.
3:33
Jeanette: I think in just one minute, I'm still a mom of three
3:37
kids, which are my absolute joy.
3:39
They're Maximilian who is 15, Mireille who is 12, and MacAllister, who is 9.
3:45
A lot of people think that I just work and work and don't have a family life,
3:48
but we do and we all move on and we get on with life and kids and family,
3:53
it's a main part of what supports me to do so much in our career.
3:58
Other than that, I think Artius and to group has grown from 2015 to now.
4:02
With Ancora Imparo, and also a digital lab with our main partners, Mr.
4:07
Arista, as well as Mr. Herman Lai.
4:10
To be serving the community of dentistry, to do digital workflows
4:15
as well as aesthetic dentistry.
4:17
I think that's the main thing.
4:18
And every day I still do surgeries.
4:21
I still see patients as a periodontist, and that's the part that I enjoy the most.
4:26
Yeah.
4:28
Chris: That's amazing.
4:29
You started your professional journey as a periodontist.
4:32
Yes.
4:32
And also implantology.
4:34
Yes.
4:34
Now I'm curious because Periodontics, for example, we can have two ways.
4:38
One, you're really focusing on treating disease the other, really
4:42
improving your soft tissue management.
4:44
Yes.
4:44
So you can prove your implant skills.
4:47
What is Jeanette Chua and what drew you to that in first place?
4:51
Jeanette: What drew me into Periodontics were, because of my early experience, and
4:56
I think you were talking about me being in Singapore as well as in Australia.
5:01
When I was back in Singapore I was very fortunate to be mentored by one of my
5:07
first mentor or my ex boss, who was very much into implant dentistry at that point.
5:11
So he exposed me immediately into implants, and that was the world 20
5:16
years ago where it was so different.
5:19
And when we see these patients that have implants, most of them are older,
5:24
but you see the younger ones that need implants and you're wondering
5:28
why and when you see them, a lot of them have periodontal disease.
5:31
And it's a disease that's so hard to control.
5:34
And that came to the question of why do we need implants?
5:37
Why can't we control the disease?
5:38
What's periodontal disease?
5:39
And that's how the curiosity started because of this difficult patients
5:44
that we have to deal with all the time.
5:46
Goerge: Yeah, I fully agree.
5:47
So implants should be the last resort, and it's so much, probably more impactful
5:51
if you're trying to not need implants.
5:54
And it might sound strange if an implant company says that, but I'm
5:57
very convinced that it's actually should go in that direction.
6:00
Jeanette: Yeah.
6:00
I think it's about ethical care and we are treating a disease, and if we're
6:05
using an implant to treat a disease, we need to understand the environment.
6:08
We need to understand everything that goes along with it.
6:11
And in the very end, we are still treating a human being.
6:14
Not just a tooth.
6:15
And it's a whole mouth that we are looking at.
6:17
Yeah.
6:18
Chris: Yeah.
6:18
But again, honestly, the periodontology.
6:21
Can go two ways, right?
6:23
Yes.
6:23
And despite all this purpose and treating a human and disease,
6:28
there's this beautiful element of soft tissue management.
6:31
And you take very good pride in care into going to that side of the periodontology.
6:36
What do you find most rewarding in this segment?
6:39
Jeanette: So in Periodontology, what intrigued me the most was regeneration.
6:43
Because in order to regenerate, and probably because of my mentors and the
6:47
people that I was with in peril and Loma Linda with Jan Berg and Professor Max
6:53
Krieger, we were very much into proper regeneration tissues the hemidesmosomes,
6:59
all the cells of what regenerates on the tooth, whether we can grow soft
7:03
tissue, whether we can grow bone.
7:05
And from there it is important to realize that without regeneration
7:10
and without handling the bone and the tissues properly, you can't recreate or
7:15
reverse nature or reverse the disease.
7:19
Thus, if you know how to handle regeneration, that's when you
7:23
are able to do good implant dentistry at the same time.
7:26
So I think that was what intrigued me the most, and a lot of people
7:29
are very focused on either I'm a soft tissue person or I'm an implant
7:33
person, or I'm a pure perio person.
7:36
I see it.
7:37
I see Periodontics as an all encompassing, our main goal is to regenerate, right?
7:42
And if our main goal is to regenerate, whether be it implants, be it tooth,
7:46
you still need to have the same philosophy and same understanding
7:50
as well, not just soft tissue only.
7:52
Yeah, I think that's, that's what I am passionate about or what I feel.
7:59
We still have a lot of work that can be done, especially with bio physiologies
8:04
and stem cells and everything else that is possible for regeneration that
8:08
we do not know at this point of time.
8:10
Yeah.
8:11
Goerge: Amazing.
8:11
Jeanette: Yeah.
8:12
Goerge: Yeah.
8:12
That's a very, maybe a topic for another let's say product because
8:16
I'm also very fascinated by tissue engineering and and cell biology.
8:19
Engineering actually two parts.
8:20
Yes.
8:21
There, there is some research going on yes.
8:22
Very fascinating.
8:23
Jeanette: It's one of the, one of the hardest and the toughest.
8:25
Yeah.
8:26
Because in order to get predictability and periodontal regeneration, that's
8:30
also one of the hardest topic as well.
8:32
And not many people, we used to joke during residency time.
8:38
In Italy, the publications that come out, and this might not be such a good
8:41
thing, but I will say it in Italy, when the pub, all the publication comes out,
8:46
they are able to regenerate everything.
8:48
Goerge: Everything, yeah.
8:48
Yeah.
8:49
Jeanette: They can gain four, five millimeters.
8:50
And when it comes to the United States and when they're regenerating,
8:53
we only get one or two millimeters.
8:55
Goerge: That's different population.
8:57
Jeanette: It might be the population, but what we call it is the pope's water.
9:01
The holy water.
9:02
Oh, the holy water.
9:03
Goerge: Okay.
9:03
So they have the holy water there.
9:04
Okay.
9:04
Yeah.
9:05
Jeanette: We need the holy water.
9:06
Goerge: Yeah.
9:06
We're still in the search of the holy water.
9:08
Jeanette: Yes.
9:09
Goerge: When we look a bit at your, let's say career, I think having
9:13
a good progression is not linear.
9:16
Yeah.
9:16
And sometimes you have to take very difficult decisions for yourself.
9:20
What has been one of your most decisive moments in your career, and, what did
9:24
you have to decide at that point in time?
9:26
Jeanette: I think there was a lot of issues before I went to the
9:29
States, and that was one of the most defining moments in my career.
9:34
There were two things as a women at that time and having a boyfriend at
9:40
that time that wanted to settle down, it was between either you get married
9:43
and have a normal, usual life, or you move on to go study and do postgraduate.
9:50
And I think that decision came when you have a bigger
9:54
purpose of what you wanna do.
9:55
And the passion in dentistry, because I saw what was possible
9:59
with regeneration on the implants.
10:01
And that was when Professor Joseph Kan came and showed me this slide.
10:05
And I have to thank him for it because he's one of my first mentors that
10:08
really taught us very, taught me very much on implant dentistry where.
10:14
He showed me this traditional carousel slide and said, pick
10:19
which one is the implant.
10:20
And I could not.
10:22
Oh, really?
10:23
I could not.
10:23
Yeah.
10:24
And that was the defining moment that I realized, my God, implants are
10:29
going to change the way we practic.
10:32
Dentistry and it will be here to stay.
10:35
Despite what I saw, I nearly gave up in implant dentistry.
10:38
A lot of people think that, like you say, it's a linear progression.
10:41
It was not a linear progression.
10:43
I did masters in applied commerce.
10:44
One thing to quit dentistry in actual fact, because I was
10:48
Goerge: Yes.
10:48
You were considering quitting Yes.
10:49
Dentistry.
10:50
Oh, yes,
10:50
Jeanette: because the responsibility of treating a patient or being a
10:55
medical profession is you hold a lot of responsibility, especially
10:58
if you're placing implants.
10:59
Because you're putting a foreign body into a patient, you have to realize
11:03
Goerge: you should stay there for 20 or more years and Yeah,
11:07
you can't escape so that, yeah.
11:08
Yes.
11:08
You
11:08
Jeanette: can't escape.
11:10
And so whatever you do, it has a permanent effect on the patient and you
11:14
need to be responsible for what you do.
11:16
And that's what I saw in Singapore and I saw all the complications and
11:20
all the stuff that could happen, and I'm thinking to myself, this
11:23
is too much responsibility for me.
11:25
Do I want this?
11:26
Do I want to be part of
11:27
Goerge: this?
11:27
Yeah,
11:27
Jeanette: that's right.
11:28
I'm like, I didn't pick up dentistry thinking I was gonna hold so much of
11:32
responsibility and I said, maybe it's time for me to look for another job.
11:35
Yeah.
11:36
Look for another industry.
11:38
That's how I did a Master's in applied Commerce.
11:40
But luck has it such that when he showed me the slide when he was in Melbourne,
11:46
I realized it was still the way to go.
11:49
And I still saw a lot of patients with periodontal disease that are
11:52
not treated properly, are not given the options of having implants.
11:56
That's really unfair to them.
11:58
And that's when we have to move on.
12:00
And that was one of the most defining moments in my career where it changed
12:04
my life, where I ended up in the States.
12:08
Yeah.
12:09
Goerge: So you had to take a decision between let's say the normal
12:11
progression of life and also, a more special way of continuing Yes.
12:16
Which actually for you meant that you went to Loma Linda University.
12:19
Yes, that's right.
12:20
Yeah, that's, that has certainly been a very difficult decision.
12:23
Yeah, I can imagine.
12:24
Jeanette: Not that my parents were very happy with me at that time.
12:27
You could imagine.
12:28
I can imagine.
12:28
Yeah, you could imagine.
12:31
But I always tell the younger ones, there is always a reason why certain
12:36
doors are open to you, and if the doors are open to you, please take
12:40
the opportunity and don't regret.
12:41
And if you don't take the opportunity, do not regret as well.
12:45
It usually means there is something else for you to do.
12:47
And life is such, is like what we were just discussing.
12:51
It's like what Albert Einstein says, you just have to keep
12:53
paddling and you just keep moving.
12:55
That's the only balance you can find.
12:57
Yeah.
12:57
Yeah.
12:57
Goerge: You mentioned Joseph Kan.
12:59
Was he one of your mentors then?
13:01
Yes.
13:01
That you would really consider also being very influential on, on your progression?
13:04
Jeanette: That's right.
13:05
That's right.
13:06
Very much because he's a prosthodontist.
13:08
Surgically very well trained and I was in the perio department and obviously perio
13:13
soft tissue and implants in those days completely different path of treatment
13:19
methodology as well as thinking process.
13:21
So there was a lot of that drove me into immediacy.
13:25
Goerge: Yeah.
13:25
Jeanette: And what I saw in Loma Linda was pushing the envelope,
13:28
knowing where the limits are.
13:30
Finding new ways to solve problems, and that's what we need to be inspired to.
13:35
I think a lot of people nowadays tend to get into a zone where
13:39
you are in a comfort zone.
13:40
You want to practice all safely going at scientifically proven, but
13:44
sometimes science takes 20 years to prove exactly certain things.
13:47
So we do need to take the leap of faith.
13:50
But the bottom line that I tell the younger ones is that.
13:55
Do know perio as much as possible.
13:58
Please do know perio.
14:00
Don't think you are super human being or a superhero that you can
14:03
do everything that's not possible.
14:05
Yeah.
14:05
And don't
14:06
Goerge: experiment on the patients, yes,
14:07
Jeanette: that's right.
14:08
Yeah.
14:08
Goerge: Particularly in, in the younger let's say the early days of a career,
14:12
we often depend on good mentors.
14:14
Yes.
14:15
What would you consider the best advice that you ever got?
14:19
And by whom?
14:20
Jeanette: Okay.
14:21
This was given by Professor Max Krieger and Professor Jan
14:26
Berg, who has now passed both.
14:31
When I got into the perio department, the first session
14:35
that we got, it's like onboarding.
14:37
There was both of them sitting down there and Professor Max Krieger said,
14:42
if you think you're coming in here the next three years to find
14:47
all the answers you want about periodontology, you are so wrong.
14:52
You are not going to find all the answers at the end of three years, which
14:56
means you're gonna be serving here for the next three years and you're still
14:59
not gonna find any of the answers.
15:00
And I'm thinking to myself, why am I here?
15:03
And the next sentence he said was.
15:08
This next three years is where it's gonna open up your mind to ensure
15:13
that you ask the right questions and push yourself and find new ways
15:17
to do things, and find new methods to improve this world of dentistry.
15:23
And also.
15:26
Secondly, he said, one more thing.
15:28
We train you for the next three years.
15:30
It's not for your selfish being to be able to do well in your
15:34
work, but for you to also be able to share it with your colleagues.
15:38
And I think that has set in me deeply.
15:43
To this day, which is why we do so much in art.
15:46
And Kora in Per, yeah.
15:48
'cause it is a responsibility that he has put on our shoulders that we are
15:53
training you the next three years.
15:54
And the reason why we train you is because we don't know all the answers.
15:58
And if we don't know all the answers, we depend on you to make sure that you ask
16:01
the right questions at the right time.
16:03
Do as much as you can and pass it on.
16:05
And I think that is one of the best legacy that they have ever left for me.
16:11
And I hope to be able to pass it on too.
16:13
Yeah.
16:14
Goerge: That's a beautiful story and it also explains your passion for education.
16:18
Yes.
16:18
Certainly partially yes.
16:19
And obviously it has been set very early on to very inspirational starting
16:22
point of this three years of education.
16:24
Yeah.
16:24
Yeah.
16:24
I
16:24
Jeanette: think I'm super blessed to have met people like Max Krieger, John Berg, as
16:30
well as professor Joseph Kan, who have all inspired me to move towards excellence.
16:36
And that's one of the hardest things.
16:38
And I think there's a big difference between excellence and perfection.
16:41
'cause what we see nowadays is often about perfection.
16:44
On the lecture rooms.
16:45
And people show the best of the very best in all scenarios.
16:49
In life.
16:50
It's not like that inpractice, it's in real world.
16:53
It's not like that.
16:54
Yeah.
16:55
And I
16:55
Goerge: think how can other people learn if you're not open to us or show your
16:58
failures and show how you treated it.
17:01
Failures personally.
17:02
Yes.
17:02
So that you can actually talk about it.
17:04
I greatly admire those people that actually can talk about their steps.
17:09
I think every learning individual has sometimes because it's I believe it's
17:12
the greatest opportunity to also learn.
17:14
Chris: Yeah.
17:15
I, this is one of the example of Joseph Kuhn, right?
17:17
He published exactly immediate aesthetics.
17:21
In century incisor.
17:22
Yes.
17:24
He was going yeah.
17:24
Year one.
17:25
He was going year two.
17:26
He was going well until he got the call from the patient, and then he was humble
17:30
enough to rewrite an article to say everything I said in the past was wrong.
17:35
Don't believe in that one.
17:37
Now we have ways to make it better.
17:39
Yes.
17:39
It was so humble and so honest.
17:40
Yes.
17:41
I think
17:41
Jeanette: that's what we are trained to do in that environment.
17:45
And if we are all trained in our medical field to do that, I think
17:49
progression of medicine will be so much faster, even in dentistry as well.
17:53
Very often we hide, what we don't want others to know.
17:57
In actual fact, there are big learning lessons that even if you can't solve,
18:00
somebody else will be able to take that lesson and find new solutions for it.
18:04
And that's what I think they were imparting on me as well.
18:08
Yeah.
18:08
And anterior implant aesthetics, to be fair, I look at my cases now.
18:13
15 years ago, 10 years ago, 20 years ago, to now very different materials, products,
18:21
methods, things that are available.
18:23
You can't blame the people who have placed implants 30 years ago
18:27
that they don't look ecstatically.
18:28
Correct.
18:29
Because in those days.
18:31
That was, yeah.
18:32
That was the norm.
18:33
Goerge: How it was done.
18:33
Yeah.
18:34
Yes.
18:35
How do you see the onset, actually, of social media?
18:37
Because it, you are also very digital.
18:39
And maybe we talk about the digital lab aspect and Yes.
18:41
Digital dentistry later, a lot of the things that before, took years
18:47
to actually come to the practice.
18:50
Nowadays it takes much shorter Yes.
18:53
Because digital basically accelerated everything.
18:56
Now there is also less peer reviewed research.
18:59
Because a lot of people, they don't even, read articles anymore.
19:02
That's how do you see the onset of social media and this faster
19:05
progression in digital in terms of.
19:08
When it comes to, does it do good to the patient or is it even more so
19:13
showing the nice cases and less the ones that did not turn out that well?
19:18
Jeanette: So what happens with social media?
19:20
We are all human beings.
19:21
We all want to look good.
19:23
So it's not going to have ugly things on the social media and.
19:27
Gives a lot of misleading information to patients.
19:30
So we have patients that come asking for laser therapy that's gonna
19:33
treat everything, which is, hello.
19:35
Laser doesn't treat, I want to look like this picture.
19:39
So that's the unfortunate thing about social media.
19:42
However, this is meant to happen in the sense of progression without this.
19:48
Human being cannot progress because patients were never demanding before.
19:52
Because they knew so little.
19:54
And now with social media, the good news is they become and became more demanding.
19:59
Which means they will ask the right questions and the smarter
20:02
ones are gonna get to the right people and get the right treatment.
20:06
You're gonna see a glut of all of that coming out, be it good
20:09
or bad, before the true good.
20:12
And I always believed in that, in all competition, where you see implant
20:16
companies too, 20 years ago there were hundreds of companies that came out and
20:21
everyone was just as good or even better.
20:23
Even better than the rest.
20:25
That's right.
20:25
Everyone.
20:26
And it was a big confusion for.
20:27
From dentist, but eventually things will fall apart and it will show which are the
20:33
good ones and which are the bad ones, and which are the ones that are gonna stay
20:36
and which are the ones that are gonna stay with you and with the patients.
20:40
And I think a responsible, ethical company would grow with.
20:45
The fact that you take responsibility for what happens and we are continuing
20:49
to research and go forward and move on to better and better products.
20:53
Same goes with the dentist career path.
20:55
I may have done something 20 years ago, I would not do now
20:58
because that's what I know.
20:59
But the patients need to understand that technology at that point and knowledge
21:03
and scientific articles didn't come out at that point to show this direction.
21:07
And thus, we now know this is a different way to practice.
21:10
You can't fault what has happened because it's.
21:14
Very simple analogy that I tell patients.
21:18
If you're buying a car, you don't expect a car to last your whole
21:22
lifespan in implant dentistry, you expect the implants to last, last,
21:27
your whole lifespan, be it 60 years.
21:29
And that's hard to have to accomplish.
21:32
Yeah.
21:32
And yes, we do have cars that last for 60 years, but they will not look the same.
21:36
They do not.
21:37
The same for sure.
21:38
Or function the same.
21:39
Yeah.
21:39
Or function the same.
21:40
And you have to accept that it doesn't look the same and it's
21:44
not gonna be the same as long as what is most important to you.
21:48
If aesthetics is most important to you, then we gotta deal with it differently.
21:52
If function is most important to you and it doesn't affect your life, let.
21:57
Make do with what we have now because it has served you 60 years, let's say.
22:01
And yeah, I think we have to be practical and if you are able to
22:05
communicate to patients and the public in the correct way, and I think it
22:09
take companies like Straumann to be able to create public awareness of
22:13
what's good and what's not so good.
22:15
Or we don't need to say that, but we just need to say that, hey, there are certain
22:18
criteria and you should look for certain things when you're getting an implant.
22:22
I think.
22:23
Those are what the industry would benefit from not just from a dentist, also from
22:30
a product and company point of view.
22:32
So I think that will come and I'm very sure why you're doing this.
22:36
It's also part of that we're working on it, so we're trying
22:38
Goerge: to do our best.
22:40
So while you can learn.
22:42
In terms of treatment choices for, the next patient to come.
22:45
Some of the life choices you just made, you can make them once.
22:48
And as you mentioned before you are a family, so this
22:52
family is important to you.
22:53
And what was, what would very much interest me and also listeners is, how
22:57
do you balance actually professional and private, and maybe to extent this.
23:02
What would you recommend to a younger self with what you know today?
23:09
Jeanette: So I used to be very harsh on myself and because of my training
23:15
previously that we have to be always on our toes and do the best that we
23:20
can for our patients and be always be there and do excellent work.
23:25
It came to a point that I realized and one of one of a mentor life
23:29
mentor who talked to me and said, you have to realize Jeanette.
23:34
Like you say in the bicycle, life is a journey.
23:36
At certain point of time, you have to slow down and the slowing down is because of
23:40
other priorities coming into your life.
23:42
So I tell the younger ones that you can't do all at one goal.
23:46
You wanna set up a family, you wanna have the best career, you wanna specialize,
23:50
you wanna do everything you wanna go.
23:51
That's not possible.
23:52
There's only 24 hours in a day, so you need to make certain decisions at certain
23:57
point of life and realize that hey, maybe at this period, this is what I need to do.
24:01
The next period is what I need to do.
24:02
And, but you're still working towards the goal of where you want to be.
24:05
And I think where you want to be is what you set yourself to.
24:08
Some people are happy just being a GP and they can be a super GP too, and they do.
24:13
Far better and you have a better life.
24:15
There's nothing right or wrong about that.
24:18
So it is that period of time where I was breastfeeding my kids for two years,
24:23
every one of them as much as possible.
24:25
I slow down that first two years of my kids' life.
24:28
I slow down, I don't lecture, I do less work, and I see less patients.
24:33
And of course I have patients that were upset with me and left us, they
24:37
came back, some of them came up.
24:39
But that's part of life.
24:40
And I. I don't regret it now.
24:43
I was very harsh on myself at that time.
24:45
I would've told myself, Hey, this is part of the journey.
24:48
There's gonna be more and more better stuff that comes down the line and
24:51
you'll need to find that balance.
24:54
And I think that's what I would've told my younger self.
24:56
And I told a lot of younger ones that always look at me
24:58
and ask me, how do you do this?
25:01
You only have 24 hours.
25:02
Why do you do so much?
25:03
I say there is certain point of time that you do everything and.
25:09
The Life Mentor told me one thing.
25:10
When you're in the clinic, make sure the support system at home is all there and
25:15
everything is safe and everything is good.
25:17
That when you're in the clinic, all your attention is to work and to the
25:21
patient and to what you need to do best.
25:24
The minute you settle everything, you walk off, go back into your house the minute
25:28
you sat into your house, everything.
25:31
Back to the kids, at that period of time, once the kids are settled,
25:34
they have just gone to sleep.
25:36
Okay, now you can do your own stuff.
25:37
Goerge: Yeah.
25:38
Sorry.
25:39
So the second half of the day starts.
25:40
Yeah, that's right.
25:42
Jeanette: That's when you start doing stuff.
25:43
Goerge: Yeah.
25:43
That's very inspirational.
25:44
And I hope that this gives also energy to a lot of very gifted young dentists.
25:50
In the community because obviously it can be done.
25:53
Yes.
25:53
And don't be too harsh on yourself.
25:55
It's possible to actually be successful obviously on professional and private.
25:59
Jeanette: And this applies to males too, because nowadays fa it's so important
26:03
for the father to spend as much time with the kids and if they need to rush back
26:07
and go back to the kids, it's also hard for them to dedicate the rest of their
26:12
time to try and push and, do as much.
26:15
Yeah.
26:15
It is one of those things in life, we all have to find a balance.
26:19
Chris: Jeanette is speaking of work life balance and quest for excellence,
26:24
in this journey I see here, you've been in Melbourne, Singapore, california.
26:29
You're doing some puncture activities in edinburgh.
26:31
Huh?
26:32
That they say, home is where our heart is.
26:34
Where is home for you and where can we expect to live up next?
26:40
Jeanette: That was a very good question.
26:41
Thank you Christian.
26:42
I. I have been so blessed to be living in all these countries and
26:47
different parts of the world now.
26:49
At the moment, home is Malaysia, Kuala Lump because that's where your family is.
26:53
And I always tell people that where your family is where home
26:57
is for what it is to come in the future is where it really depends.
27:02
Nowadays, I think that if the kids, wherever they're going to go, it is still
27:05
home to the earth because we are now.
27:09
Global citizens and every country has its pros and its cons of where you live
27:15
and what career path leads you to, gives you the opportunity to do the best work.
27:20
Why not?
27:21
Yeah.
27:23
Goerge: So you would be open to different occasions.
27:25
Let's see.
27:25
Okay, so this is good.
27:26
Chris: Roll the drums.
27:27
Yeah, the
27:27
Goerge: drum.
27:28
No, no regulation yet.
27:31
Okay.
27:31
Next episode.
27:32
Chris: Next episode.
27:33
Jeanette, I'd like to shift gears a little bit and talk about immediate
27:37
implants and also public advocacy.
27:39
I know you're very strong about this, and you've done quite some significant work
27:43
with immediate implant placement and also immediate temporization in aesthetic area.
27:49
Can you share some of your decision making process in this particular indication?
27:54
Jeanette: Okay.
27:55
It is important to realize that science has moved so much now that we
28:01
have so many consensus statements and beautiful people and groups that have
28:05
done articles, that have published on immediacy, that have set out many
28:10
keys and criteria to do excellent.
28:12
Immediacy work, and I think for anterior implant aesthetics, there is
28:16
Morton, there's Levine, there's Kan. In total, when I read the articles,
28:20
there are like 26 key factors to ensure that you get immediacy, right?
28:26
For anterior acid aesthetics.
28:27
I don't know whether you realize that.
28:29
I've calculated all of that.
28:30
Wow,
28:30
Goerge: that's a lot.
28:32
Chris: I imagine airplanes.
28:33
Goerge: Maybe Christian knows, but
28:35
Jeanette: it is.
28:35
It is.
28:36
When I look at the list, I. Remember in those days that we didn't have this
28:42
list, but the instinct was regeneration.
28:45
Do no harm.
28:47
Bring it back to nature.
28:48
And that's what you want to do.
28:50
So if you understand science, what you do and what happens is going to maintain.
28:57
Grow or regenerate and allow a better aesthetics or better
29:00
outcome, that's gonna be the way.
29:02
So the decision process remains mainly on two main factors, the
29:06
site itself and the patient.
29:09
And the site includes the neighboring teeth.
29:12
So in aesthetic zone, you have to realize you are affecting a patient's smile and.
29:18
Be it a low smile line, your white aesthetic still has to be
29:21
there and be a high smile line.
29:24
Then you really have to make sure the 26 key factors are there,
29:28
to make sure you get it right.
29:30
So if the low smile line.
29:33
And if patients are willing to accept certain imperfection, I would call
29:39
it imperfection, but still excellent work and that, it's gonna stay
29:44
and survive and maintain at that point for the next 15, 20 years.
29:48
Because I think that's about the bare minimum we are looking at nowadays.
29:52
The three years, five years kind of thing.
29:55
If we are able to do that, then I think that's most important to ensure
30:00
you can do the immediate implant gain, primary stability before
30:03
you decide on provisionalization.
30:05
So those are the two main factors.
30:08
All the other key factors, more than happy to give a whole full day lecture on it.
30:14
Chris: And how, and how do you think the industry has helped you in that way?
30:17
For example, we were just discussing about Joe Khan and.
30:21
In the beginning of immediate implant placement and aesthetic zone.
30:24
Implant was perceived to be a cork, right?
30:26
Yes.
30:26
You have to plug that socket.
30:28
Now we talk less is more.
30:30
Yes.
30:30
So we were also developing better alloy different diameters to
30:33
enable less metal, more biology.
30:36
How do you see the whole industry evolving to enabling this path?
30:40
Jeanette: The industry, Straumann is one of one of those that really
30:43
make a big shift in order to make sure that we moved on with time
30:47
with what Immediacy was doing.
30:49
We, you, all companies have developed, a lot of companies have always tried to
30:54
look for ways to make immediacy easier.
30:57
Firstly, it's not an easy.
30:59
Technique or process.
31:01
And you do need some experience to be able to get it right and the products
31:05
nowadays allows better stability, high top values to ensure you can actually
31:11
gain good stability quite easily.
31:14
Then the provisionalization, as well as digitization,
31:18
allows you to do pre-planning.
31:20
Do.
31:21
Pre-preparation of temporaries, all of that has made life so
31:25
much easier to our industry.
31:27
Our profession.
31:28
I used to have to sit three hours.
31:30
Preparing a temporary, right?
31:32
Yeah.
31:33
The surgery might take 15 minutes, but
31:35
Goerge: then, yeah,
31:36
Jeanette: then you are down there, trying to get that perfect tam to
31:38
get the right emergence profile and a submergence, whatever lines and
31:42
everything else, and then get the right occlusion and get the right fit.
31:45
That takes so much time nowadays.
31:48
It's so different for us.
31:49
Know with digital, and that's why we moved on to digital very early on.
31:52
It was because if I could cut down this amount of time, I would,
31:56
because we would plan it, pre-plan it, get everything ready, and having
32:00
the treat D printer, the milling.
32:01
Everything all done pre hand.
32:03
Goerge: And maybe the patient needs to come for one visit less.
32:06
Yes.
32:06
And I think then it has also a big impact on That's right.
32:10
That's right.
32:10
The patient's happiness, yes.
32:11
Jeanette: Yes.
32:12
Patient happiness.
32:13
That patient happiness goal, we don't have enough publication on that.
32:19
Goerge: What makes patients happier?
32:20
Jeanette: Yes.
32:20
And I often lecture in immediacy that it is still in the very end, the decision
32:25
making process is the patient to together.
32:28
With you, understanding what's possible, what's not possible in this scenario.
32:32
Is it a good thing and what your expectations are?
32:34
And I think patient happiness, would they want to gain 0.5 millimeter
32:39
more soft tissue and ensure.
32:42
Zero recession and end up with three surgeries, or would they want one
32:47
surgery and accept that there may be a 0.5 millimeter recession or one
32:52
millimeter recession in time to come.
32:54
And I think that's something that is, it's it's been drummed up a lot
32:59
and we all as profession in dentist we want it perfect, but what is.
33:05
Excellent.
33:06
Goerge: What's good for the patient is maybe a different
33:08
story and it's, that's right.
33:09
It's very individual.
33:10
Depending on, in what situation in at what age you are.
33:13
And That's right.
33:14
And you know how a static the case is.
33:15
Yes.
33:15
It's such a big difference.
33:16
And yes.
33:17
I think you can do magic.
33:19
Yes.
33:19
But.
33:20
The patient doesn't always want the magic, so maybe that's true, but
33:24
Jeanette: that does not mean you should do sloppy work as well.
33:27
No, that's not what I mean.
33:29
Yeah.
33:29
That's always hard.
33:30
It's a very different line.
33:31
I get very scared sometimes because when we say this, then somebody might
33:34
just turn it around and say, oh, now I can, no, I can do everything.
33:38
Oh my God.
33:40
Chris: Yeah.
33:40
Any immediate treatment solutions have been.
33:43
Very well describing fundamental yes.
33:47
Yet there could be some pitfalls that we should watch out for.
33:51
What do you do consider the most common pitfalls clinicians fall into.
33:56
The two extremes.
33:57
Jeanette: Ooh, yeah.
33:58
They are.
33:59
The two extremes.
34:00
The two extremes of immediacy is when you want perfect perfection and you're trying
34:04
to get the angulation of the implant to be in the perfect position, not realizing
34:11
that you're probably not gonna end up with primary stability, or you're gonna
34:14
do something quite crazy to destroy.
34:17
The bone and everything else.
34:19
Okay.
34:20
So that's the perfection extreme.
34:23
That's the common pitfall, which I see a lot of dentists tend to
34:27
do because they're trained to I've gotta put it in this angle.
34:29
The implant position is good to come out at a cing and not all the time
34:34
immediacy, you're gonna have implants coming out at the single limb because
34:37
you don't have bone that's this wide.
34:39
So I think that's one.
34:41
The other is.
34:43
The finer temporization all when they try to gain primary stability too much,
34:50
where they start angulating implants into way of physicians and you end
34:56
up causing recession and awful things that we should not be doing, then
35:01
when they temporize, because that's the part, if they don't spend enough
35:06
time in ensuring that's a good fit.
35:09
That you are out of eccentric contact.
35:12
No matter how beautiful your implant is or what you've done, it's still gonna fail.
35:18
Yeah.
35:19
Yeah.
35:19
That's because of occlusion.
35:23
Chris: Check, check.
35:25
Jeannette, I'd like to shift gears a little bit towards education and
35:29
treatment, education philosophy.
35:31
You're an ITI fellow?
35:33
Jeanette: Yep.
35:33
Chris: Section chair.
35:35
Jeanette: Very blessed.
35:35
Chris: And very engaged with the speaking globally and educational activities.
35:41
How has the ITI and this international network helped
35:45
you shaped, help you shape your.
35:47
Clinical decisions, but also your educational philosophy.
35:50
Yeah,
35:51
Jeanette: I think ITI is one of the strongest, it's probably the strongest
35:55
at this moment of time when it comes to implant education and this
35:59
community is definitely necessary for us to progress in implantology.
36:05
So when I get to meet people around the world and see what everyone is doing in
36:10
education, that gives you inspiration and energy to continue what we do
36:13
in our small little section or small little corner in Malaysia education
36:19
is going to be forever there because we don't graduate from dental school.
36:25
Knowing everything.
36:26
That's a fact of life that five years or six years or eight years that you
36:31
do in dental school will not give you
36:34
Goerge: everything.
36:34
Jeanette: Everything.
36:35
Goerge: That's clear.
36:35
Jeanette: Everything.
36:35
That's Especially implants.
36:36
Yes, especially in implants because it's not even in the undergrad
36:40
curriculum in a lot of schools.
36:42
So continuing education is one main path that will ensure your
36:47
dentist even in a practice like Earth, where is multidisciplinary?
36:52
We have gps, we have other disciplines.
36:56
They still need to understand implants even if they don't do it.
37:00
And I always tell my younger ones, they, you really need to understand, I don't
37:04
care whether you like it or you don't like it, but you need to understand
37:08
because if you don't understand, you can't do proper treatment planning.
37:11
You don't give patients the right options as well for what is possible for them.
37:16
And this.
37:18
Is more so now seeing that it's, I thought it was just Asia, that
37:23
we are a bit, we don't get as much education, which is why we started.
37:27
That's global in those.
37:29
Yes.
37:29
But now meeting everyone around the world it, I realize that it's
37:33
a common mission we all have to do.
37:35
And seeing everyone doing that part as far as especially ITI and Straumann doing
37:40
so much is just inspirational and it just allows me to continue doing this.
37:45
Yeah.
37:46
As well.
37:47
Goerge: Yeah.
37:47
And that's a perfect segue to talk a little bit about ancora Empower.
37:50
Can you tell our listers a bit more, what was the guiding principles?
37:53
Why did you build it, and what do you try to achieve with it?
37:57
Jeanette: Ancora Imparo means I'm still learning.
38:00
And why I built it together with the artist group, with my previous my
38:05
current partners and all, it was because I. We knew that in order to bring the
38:11
younger ones up to a certain level and ourselves to continue to learn we need
38:15
to bring the best of the very best from around the world to Asia and make it
38:18
available for as many people as possible.
38:21
And that was the philosophy of what Anura Empower was.
38:25
We will never stop learning.
38:26
Technology is moving so fast, and we knew at that time, in 2015,
38:30
we need to invest in digital.
38:31
We need to move on with the digital lab.
38:33
We need to move on and to understand what's going on.
38:36
To go on dentistry is making a fundamental and a very critical transitional
38:43
change that we probably would not have, in centuries here, foreseen.
38:47
Yes.
38:47
Yes.
38:47
Because of digital.
38:49
Exactly.
38:49
Yeah.
38:49
Yeah.
38:50
So this is a critical, moment for the industry, and we need
38:54
to either do the right thing or we are all gonna be left behind.
38:58
And even if you decide not to change and not catch up with digital,
39:02
you're gonna soon realize that you can't practice properly anymore.
39:06
And then that's the reason why we started on core.
39:09
And there's no point of only educating yourself.
39:13
You need to educate.
39:15
Your peers, people around you, they're referring network and
39:19
and the entire country would benefit if everybody moves ops.
39:25
Goerge: Yeah.
39:25
So you start with the mind of actually educating your own clinicians first.
39:30
And also with the very digital mindset from the get go.
39:32
Yes.
39:32
So in, in 15 you start your 2015.
39:35
Yeah.
39:35
Your education journey.
39:36
Yes.
39:37
At which point in time is it today?
39:39
Can you tell a bit more about the facilities and maybe the
39:42
platforms that you're offering?
39:44
Yeah,
39:44
Jeanette: so I think we have gone on to build two full fledged operating
39:47
theater because it's really important, especially for surgery to, for people to
39:52
realize that you need a good environment.
39:54
For infection control and you need to know how to do surgeries under
39:57
sedation in a safe environment.
39:59
And of course that was setting the standards and that would be the best way
40:03
to be able to train younger ones that they understand surgery is not doing it.
40:08
Slip slope.
40:09
And you need to know what you can and what you can't and bring back
40:13
whatever you can into your practice.
40:15
And I think that was it.
40:16
We have we have a training hall as well, a huge training hall for lecture.
40:20
And we also have envision Training Center together with Dr. Nazari that we have.
40:25
Microscopes and we have phantom hates to ensure we train under the
40:30
microscope and then the phantom hates to practice as much of what we can do.
40:34
Yeah.
40:35
So we have built on in terms of facilities, but the
40:38
main philosophy is having.
40:41
The facility and environment to be able to do practical and real work.
40:46
And I think that's important.
40:47
Hands-on are ex extremely important.
40:50
And then watching life surgeries are extremely important.
40:53
Being guided to see what things, how things move, is also extremely important.
40:58
Goerge: So you also offer mentoring?
40:59
Jeanette: Yes.
40:59
Goerge: For people coming there, doing a residency?
41:01
Jeanette: Yes.
41:02
Yes, we do as well for implant dentistry.
41:05
And that's together with the ITI curriculum.
41:07
Goerge: Very good.
41:07
Yeah.
41:07
Jeanette: Yeah.
41:08
Goerge: So for everyone who is interested please make sure you check out thank you.
41:11
Jeanette's education portal and also the possibility to
41:14
maybe take courses with you.
41:15
Jeanette: Yeah.
41:16
And we organize every two years a tree master's program.
41:19
And this is coming up next year, in February in Malaysia.
41:22
I hope the both of you that we can invite you both Okay.
41:26
Into Malaysia.
41:26
Goerge: That would be great.
41:27
Jeanette: That would be great.
41:28
Goerge: So let's talk a little bit about the future of dentistry.
41:31
Okay.
41:31
Because we now heard that you have a digital lab.
41:33
You very early on actually has have foreseen how important it is
41:38
and what this digital transition is going to bring for dentistry.
41:42
And it has even accelerated with ai.
41:44
So there is so many new tools that actually we need to understand what
41:47
it can do, where the limits are.
41:50
What's your vision of dentistry in 10 years from now?
41:52
How will we do let's say implantology in a decade?
41:56
Jeanette: I think that's the magic bold question.
41:57
Exactly.
41:58
Chris: Now we're rolling the task.
41:59
Jeanette: Now we are rolling.
42:02
When I graduated, we never thought digital was gonna go this crazy and this fast.
42:07
Goerge: No one thought about this, no one could foresee this.
42:09
Jeanette: How would you even imagine the robots are gonna do surgery for you?
42:12
We are seeing that now and it's gonna move so fast.
42:17
With robotic surgery with ai, that it will happen probably within the next 10 years.
42:24
Not even.
42:25
I thought I was just gonna retire and not be able to, don't need to deal with
42:29
computers and AI and robots, but nope, it's coming faster than we taught and
42:34
I think all of us need to get into it in order to be able to practice safely.
42:38
If not, I. What happens with dentistry when the robots take
42:42
over, it still needs a human being.
42:44
And you need to understand and have enough experience to understand how to
42:48
make sure the robots do the right thing.
42:50
So it still comes down to diagnosis, treatment, planning, all of that
42:55
basic stuff that we need to have.
42:57
So I see dentistry or implantology changing towards being more automated.
43:03
But we are still going to need people to be able to, or companies that are
43:08
gonna build us tools to ensure that the right things are being executed.
43:12
Yeah.
43:12
Yeah.
43:13
That's the hardest part.
43:14
Goerge: Wow.
43:14
Yeah.
43:15
So robotics as as a reality in 10 years from now in dentistry,
43:19
Jeanette: I see the big groups.
43:20
We are driven commercially, unfortunately, in this world.
43:24
So it's a marketing tool as well.
43:28
Can you imagine patients say, Ooh, if the robots are gonna be more accurate
43:31
than the humans or the humans, why not?
43:34
Goerge: I want this.
43:34
Yeah.
43:35
Jeanette: Yeah.
43:35
Why not?
43:36
Yeah.
43:37
And if it's gonna be faster and safer, why not?
43:41
Yeah, we are gonna end up with that.
43:42
They might not be able to suture at this point of time or
43:44
raise a flap, but that's okay.
43:47
That's the human part.
43:49
But placing the implants come, let's have that.
43:52
Yeah.
43:52
Going on.
43:53
And I think it will come on.
43:54
The cost is probably gonna be very high at the beginning, but I think
43:58
the bigger groups of dental groups, insurance companies might tend
44:01
to be the ones that go into it.
44:03
First and human beings are so smart, and we develop things.
44:08
The first few things might, the first few versions might be super
44:11
and expensive, but it will get cheaper and cheaper as it goes.
44:14
Goerge: Yeah.
44:14
It's what we see already.
44:16
So it has made tremendous let's say progress.
44:18
And I'm very fascinated by how quickly also Asia moves into this field.
44:24
Especially China.
44:25
China, yes, there is, yes.
44:26
Especially China.
44:27
There is a lot of companies that are moving in that direction and probably
44:30
it's also a bit natural in medicine.
44:32
So if you look at other areas like neurosurgery or
44:35
ophthalmology, that's right.
44:37
It's already there.
44:37
Yeah.
44:38
So it's more about, what problems can we solve with robotics and how
44:42
does this I would chop sharing.
44:44
Yes.
44:45
Between a certain, machine that helps you to do certain steps.
44:49
Yes.
44:50
And the dentist work.
44:51
So I see it more as a augmentation of skills and not a substitution of skills.
44:56
Yes.
44:56
And
44:56
Jeanette: that's correct.
44:57
Goerge: Yeah.
44:57
Jeanette: Yeah.
44:58
That's so important.
44:58
That's why we call it intelligent medicine.
45:01
Because the twos are not there to help you, not think, but it's.
45:06
There for you to ensure that you do the, and make the right decision for
45:10
the robots to perform it correctly.
45:12
Yeah.
45:12
So it is still down to human beings and the experience.
45:16
Yeah.
45:16
Goerge: Wow.
45:16
That's a very good discussion to have.
45:18
But it already brings us a little bit to the end of of our ProTalk.
45:21
We make it habitats also our guests can ask questions to, to us, and, I think you
45:26
have a question also for Christian, right?
45:28
Yes.
45:29
Jeanette: Ah yeah.
45:29
Ah yeah.
45:30
Ah yeah.
45:32
No, I think Christian, what's, what made you decide to leave clinical dentistry
45:36
and work for a company like Straumann?
45:38
Yeah.
45:38
Yeah.
45:39
Chris: That is a million dollar question now.
45:41
I'm kidding.
45:42
I graduated in 2005.
45:44
And in 2005 I was already in a dental implant residency.
45:47
So I dedicated my entire professional life with dental implants.
45:50
Yes.
45:51
And already further ahead involved with good mentors.
45:56
Yes.
45:57
That brought me to their institutions and became faculty in two schools.
46:01
One of the schools was also I lapel, as we already know, and as you may know,
46:05
in Brazil, we are groomed already.
46:07
Immediate.
46:08
Yes.
46:08
Immediate solutions already part of Brazilian dental implement education.
46:13
Over time when I did decided to enroll the masters, master's in perio
46:18
and later the PhD as well, there was tons of fast forward, right?
46:22
Mastering PhD is not a week long.
46:24
We know very well, but over this period of time there was a whole
46:28
bunch of animal studies, fatigue tests, Uhhuh and tons of the backend
46:35
of what I was doing to patients that it was equally fascinating to me.
46:39
Yes.
46:40
Not just to see the outcome, but how those things.
46:43
We're being affected and bringing to life what that could potentially be.
46:48
And that sparked in me this huge interest to what if I joined the industry and
46:54
have for once the opportunity to have a fingerprint also closing the loop.
46:59
Jeanette: That's the altruistic part of him.
47:01
Yes.
47:02
Chris: And help close the loop.
47:03
So maybe my naive philosophy or mindset was like, maybe I can help the
47:09
industry to help my peers to help their patients, and it feels like this healthy
47:13
Jeanette: and I have a Christian Jerry, Dr. Christian Jerry implant.
47:16
Chris: A healthy loop, and then I could not find a better place than
47:20
Straumann because we're, we have the most powerful brains in this building.
47:27
From engineers, from product management, from.
47:30
You name it and.
47:32
It paid off.
47:33
Yes.
47:33
Because exactly as I expected, I was able to participate in core teams
47:37
that could bring products to life.
47:39
Also, animal studies, test prototypes, and have a tactile feeling to
47:44
give a little bit of a north star to the engineers, for example.
47:47
This is a lead the right direction.
47:49
Of course, we have to validate outside.
47:52
Yes.
47:52
'cause when opinion doesn't matter.
47:53
Yeah.
47:53
But at least, it matters, but don't get me wrong, one opinion is one
47:56
opinion, but just to give the north stars to engineers so they can hit
48:00
the ground running and continue what they're doing and then later see this
48:04
blooming out and see users like that's how we met, for example, with the BLX.
48:09
Correct?
48:10
Jeanette: That's right.
48:10
We met because of BLX.
48:11
Chris: Yes, exactly.
48:12
Casebook right.
48:14
There's nothing more rewarding.
48:16
Yeah, and that's exactly why I don't regret it.
48:18
Of course, we have some clinical activities still.
48:20
Some of the clinical early validations, but it's not my daily core work, but I'm
48:25
still very happy with what we do today.
48:28
Jeanette: No, but it's just amazing.
48:29
I don't think enough people realize what you guys do and how important
48:34
it is for people like you, Dr. Jerry, and as well as yourself, Dr. George,
48:38
to dedicate this amount of time.
48:41
To provide us with products that can withstand be it
48:45
50, 60 years if we have to.
48:47
And I think that's so important.
48:49
I've seen it in my first year where I saw, one of the story
48:53
was, if you don't mind me sharing.
48:55
Goerge: Sure.
48:55
Go ahead.
48:56
Jeanette: One of the story was how I wanted to quit dentistry was I have,
48:59
I was struggling with this patient for six hours and it was the first year out
49:03
of dentist school, and of course I had implantology training by my ex boss.
49:08
It's usually happens on the Saturday afternoon.
49:11
This German guy comes in with a loose crown in the patients, I
49:16
mean in his mouth, that he knew he had the implant done in Taiwan.
49:20
And he goes, I need this out.
49:21
It's irritating me.
49:22
It's hurting me, and I can't pull it out.
49:25
I can't do anything with it.
49:27
And there we go.
49:28
In those days, it's, oh, let's just drill and get the accessor and try and talk
49:32
it out, or turn it off and turn it out.
49:35
And
49:35
Goerge: it turned out not to be so easy.
49:36
So
49:37
Jeanette: Yes, for the next six hours we were struggling
49:40
together with the best technician.
49:42
In Singapore at that time together with me, and we could
49:44
not find the screwdrivers.
49:45
Guess what happened when we called the screwdriver?
49:47
Yes.
49:48
We couldn't get the thing off when I called, when he finally got on the
49:51
line with the dentist that placed the implants, guess what the dentist said.
49:55
Oh, the implant company has collapsed.
49:58
Goerge: Yes.
49:59
It's not, there is no screw driver anymore.
50:02
There is no, yeah, exactly.
50:04
Jeanette: Yes.
50:04
And I think Straumann has stood true to what it wanted to do, and it is really
50:10
important to ensure the longevity and how the company grows to ensure products.
50:15
You are putting products into patient's life and they may be
50:18
there for a long time and yeah.
50:21
That's where I tell the younger ones, it's important to stick to a good
50:25
company and place good implants.
50:27
Yeah.
50:27
As well.
50:28
Yeah.
50:29
And there
50:29
Goerge: need to be replacement ports also for Yes.
50:31
For other let's say implants, we feel quite responsible also
50:34
for, what's in, in patients.
50:36
There is such a big portion of medical devices that are from companies that
50:42
maybe 10 years, 20 years ago, yes.
50:44
They were thriving, but they don't exist anymore.
50:47
And just, identification of what product is, it is not easy.
50:51
Yes.
50:51
And then let alone finding replacement port, that's which is very difficult.
50:55
Yeah.
50:55
And
50:55
Jeanette: that's right.
50:56
Especially when it's fully also integrated.
50:58
No bone loss.
50:59
And then you can find a part and that's so sad.
51:01
We have to take out risk.
51:02
That's very bad.
51:02
Yeah.
51:03
That's
51:03
Goerge: so sad.
51:03
With all digital technology.
51:04
We should be able to do better.
51:07
Chris: George, we're coming to.
51:09
A wrap.
51:10
And we had, we covered quite some really good insights with
51:13
Jeanette, and I was curious, between everything that we talked, there's
51:17
purpose, there's community, but I would like to know from you what
51:20
stood out on today's conversation.
51:22
So I,
51:22
Goerge: I really liked the conversation, Jeanette.
51:24
Thanks a lot.
51:24
Thank you.
51:25
It was very inspiring and I think two things stood out for me particularly.
51:29
So first of all, your humbleness to talk about your own career
51:34
path, maybe your failures to let others also learn from this.
51:38
I admire this because it's so important, we're not perfect and we're all work
51:43
in progress and being able to talk about this to let others be part of
51:47
your learning journey and then even, building your own educational network.
51:52
Yes.
51:52
And built this basically for the community that stood out big time.
51:56
Yeah.
51:56
Thank you.
51:56
And the second topic that really resonated with me is how you reflected
52:01
on these different phases of life.
52:03
So that.
52:04
It's not only work, it's also, I think if you're in a good social environment
52:08
and you have family, I believe you can achieve even greater things.
52:12
And in, in your case you managed this very proactively.
52:15
You had to take very difficult decisions.
52:17
And also this that really stood out for me.
52:19
Thank you.
52:20
Thanks a lot for sharing it.
52:21
Jeanette: No, thank you.
52:22
Thank you for inviting me.
52:24
It was very Oh, you're welcome.
52:25
Yes.
52:26
Goerge: As you said Chris, so this brings us to the end of this episode of ProTalk.
52:30
I hope you enjoyed it.
52:31
To our listeners, please also look at our social media channels
52:36
Straumann Instagram account.
52:37
Jeanette, again, a very warm thank you to you for taking the time.
52:40
Jeanette: Thank you too.
52:41
Goerge: And we hope that you actually have a lot of interest to stay tuned.
52:46
And with this, I would also hand over back to you because you
52:49
have to make an announcement for the ProTalk channel Christian.
52:51
Chris: With pleasure.
52:53
With the success of Straumann ProTalk, we have decided to bloom it into a
52:57
new stream that's gonna be called Straumann ProTalk Clinical and Science.
53:01
With the ProTalk Clinical and Science, we're gonna bring the
53:04
top professionals to discuss.
53:06
Tips and tricks, do's and don'ts and pitfalls that we should watch
53:11
out for in clinical outcomes.
53:13
And as well the scientific part.
53:15
We're gonna discuss and bring the authors of the most relevant articles
53:19
and dissect it, discuss them in a fun way with a clear purpose.
53:25
Do you know what that is?
53:26
Yes.
53:27
How will the findings help your decision making process
53:30
the very next Monday morning.
53:32
Ah, can't wait to share this all with them.
53:34
Jeanette: Beautiful.
53:35
Chris: Excellent.
53:35
That sounds great.
53:36
Jeanette: Congratulations.
53:37
Goerge: Chris.
53:37
So we're looking forward and please to everyone, stay tuned.
53:40
So there will be even more content, hopefully very interesting content
53:44
coming your way and with this.
53:45
Thanks a lot for tuning in and see you in the next episode.
