- 0:15Speaker 3: special World Cup edition with myself, Simon Donley and Jackie

- 0:23Speaker 2: David wallaspon how you're doing.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Met, I'm good. Thanks.
- 0:26Speaker 3: I have to congratulate you in your promotion first and foremost,
- 0:29Speaker 3: thank you. And the season there, delighted to be the finish.
- 0:32Speaker 4: A fantastic it was. It was the aim all along.
- 0:35Speaker 4: It was the aim to get promoted. So we got
- 0:38Speaker 4: over the line. It was a bit nervous towards the
- 0:40Speaker 4: end cause their own problems, but we got there in
- 0:43Speaker 4: the end. So I still.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Tight and looking for another another season.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Hie Hi, looking for another season. So I'm hoping this
- 0:51Speaker 4: is going to go ahead, but wait and see. But yeah,
- 0:54Speaker 4: I crack at the championship, would be would be great.
- 0:57Speaker 4: When a chance to add to the medical collection, well.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I'm going to touch on that as well, because that's
- 1:01Speaker 2: a show point.
- 1:02Speaker 4: That me and.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Way back.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Thirteen back your first medal, but then madly enough you've
- 1:14Speaker 3: went on to that longevity's Johnson picked up another two.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, got the double, which I think I posted
- 1:21Speaker 4: about just recently on my Twitter was just how underrated
- 1:26Speaker 4: I think it is. She's gone, It's gone under the radar.
- 1:31Speaker 4: St John'stone Club of Saint Johnson, I have won a double
- 1:34Speaker 4: in the same year. I don't think anyone outside the
- 1:36Speaker 4: old firm's done it. I've done that in Abourdeen, which
- 1:39Speaker 4: was like thirty years ago. Yeah, so I just think
- 1:42Speaker 4: it's it's a massive achievement for such a small club
- 1:45Speaker 4: and definitely just didn't get talked about it a lot.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Definitely so world cut addition, you've been at the World
- 1:50Speaker 3: Cup KIT twenty twenty two.
- 1:54Speaker 2: How did you was.
- 1:56Speaker 3: It your mother that was a Canadian that was eligibility
- 1:59Speaker 3: because obviously you played with Scotland at different levels and
- 2:03Speaker 3: then how did the Canada think come about?
- 2:05Speaker 4: Yeah, so, I mean I went up the edges in Scotland.
- 2:09Speaker 4: I thought there's a possibility that I might get the
- 2:12Speaker 4: nod to represent the national team, but fortunately didn't happen.
- 2:16Speaker 4: And as I was going in my career, I saw
- 2:19Speaker 4: the likes of Scotti Airfield was sort of doing the
- 2:23Speaker 4: transition and he was having good success. So I just
- 2:28Speaker 4: asked the question and then nothing really came of it
- 2:31Speaker 4: as much. And then John Herdman got the job at
- 2:36Speaker 4: Canada in twenty eighteen, and they phoned me at one
- 2:40Speaker 4: point just saying, have you got your passport? Would you
- 2:43Speaker 4: be interested in coming across. I was like, I need
- 2:46Speaker 4: to get sorted. So I had to do all the paperwork,
- 2:49Speaker 4: which took a while to get done, and it was like,
- 2:52Speaker 4: if you do the transition, that's you. You can't come back. Yeah,
- 2:57Speaker 4: So it was a big decision, but one, and I
- 3:00Speaker 4: was interested in that. It would open up opportunities and
- 3:04Speaker 4: I was interested, so I took the leap and I
- 3:07Speaker 4: never looked back after that. It was until two thousand
- 3:10Speaker 4: and what twenty three I represented?
- 3:13Speaker 2: The first approach was what twitters and eighteen? Did you say?
- 3:16Speaker 4: Twenty eighteen? So they had their first camp in Spain Mercea.
- 3:20Speaker 4: They had a friendly against New Zealand, so he brought
- 3:24Speaker 4: me along with a few of the others and I
- 3:26Speaker 4: played the second forty five minutes of that game and
- 3:29Speaker 4: we won. Run now one, Yeah, that was that was
- 3:32Speaker 4: the start of it. But yeah, it's from from my
- 3:35Speaker 4: mother's side. She was she was born there, raise there
- 3:38Speaker 4: for five years in Winnipeg, so she shared a citizenship
- 3:42Speaker 4: and everything, so I was able to apply that way,
- 3:45Speaker 4: and my grandparents lived there for about twelve years before
- 3:48Speaker 4: coming back to.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Scotland, right, and that culminated us obviously the World Cup
- 3:53Speaker 3: and twenty twenty two.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Over in Guitar. How did you find that then?
- 3:56Speaker 4: The whole thing, it's unreal, unreal.
- 4:00Speaker 3: We've been over to Dohand recent times and the the
- 4:05Speaker 3: stadiums are so close.
- 4:06Speaker 4: To each other. Yeah, they set up was tremendous and
- 4:09Speaker 4: obviously you had the negativity towards it beforehand, the people
- 4:14Speaker 4: and how it would be over there and such like.
- 4:16Speaker 4: But as soon as you're over there, you just you
- 4:19Speaker 4: were like it was like a new world. Everything was dry.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Did you just go? Did you just go somewhere to
- 4:24Speaker 2: warm up for? It was enough to Qatar.
- 4:28Speaker 4: I think we went. Yeah, we went to Guitar and
- 4:30Speaker 4: then we went across to Dubai, right, So it was
- 4:33Speaker 4: like an hour fight went over by played a friendly
- 4:36Speaker 4: against Japan, and I think before I arrived they played
- 4:41Speaker 4: a friendly against or they were in by Rain played
- 4:44Speaker 4: a friendly there before I joined them. Because we were
- 4:47Speaker 4: still in our season and a lot of them were
- 4:50Speaker 4: at the end of the season. We're the ones that
- 4:53Speaker 4: were over in the We met up afterwards and yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 4: so they were over. They were in America, the sort
- 4:58Speaker 4: of North American ones. They they switch off for a
- 5:01Speaker 4: while because they're obviously during summer, during summer, and then
- 5:05Speaker 4: they have a winter break. So they went across the Bahrain,
- 5:08Speaker 4: played a friendly there and then we met and then
- 5:11Speaker 4: I went to Qatar, and then we went across the
- 5:14Speaker 4: Dubai four again. We getst Japan, which was incredible in itself,
- 5:20Speaker 4: but no, the experience of it was just surreal. Just
- 5:23Speaker 4: like you're a boy from Saint Johnston football club that's
- 5:26Speaker 4: not that big, and you've you've played in different yeah,
- 5:32Speaker 4: and you're arriving there on a flight with Maida and
- 5:36Speaker 4: Cammi Devlin and a few other other boys, and you're
- 5:40Speaker 4: just like, this.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Is because of the proximity of it. You don't realize
- 5:44Speaker 3: that a lot of folks are going to.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Be on the.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, they were on a fight. I was in
- 5:49Speaker 4: the airport walking around and you just see my just
- 5:52Speaker 4: strolling about and he's going on the same place, the
- 5:54Speaker 4: same place as me. That's incredible. I'm on the same
- 5:57Speaker 4: flight as him and what.
- 5:59Speaker 3: About the actual tournament selfie as one of a difficult group,
- 6:02Speaker 3: it was it was crazy.
- 6:05Speaker 2: The heat effected as well. I think that the grounds
- 6:07Speaker 2: when you have corn a but was that.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Ground level with this You didn't actually it didn't actually
- 6:13Speaker 4: feel I've had worse when I'm over and when I
- 6:16Speaker 4: was over in America had a lot worse. But there
- 6:19Speaker 4: you didn't really feel as much. Of course I wasn't
- 6:21Speaker 4: really playing as much as the others were, but in
- 6:26Speaker 4: the stadium you felt actually quite cool. I think I
- 6:27Speaker 4: was wearing a jumper on the on the bench because
- 6:29Speaker 4: it was it was that that cool, that well air
- 6:33Speaker 4: con But no, you knew the group was going to
- 6:36Speaker 4: be incredibly difficult. I think they were favorites.
- 6:45Speaker 2: In the world.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Yeah, and of course you look at their team and
- 6:47Speaker 4: you and then you look at Croatia's team and you've
- 6:50Speaker 4: got like three of the best midfielders in the world,
- 6:54Speaker 4: which Androsovich, and then you look at Rockers team. I wasn't,
- 7:02Speaker 4: to be fair, he surprised me quite a bit. I
- 7:05Speaker 4: thought they were incredible and the thing about their game
- 7:10Speaker 4: was the crowd. It was it was just one of
- 7:14Speaker 4: those crowds where you couldn't hear yourself speak or think
- 7:17Speaker 4: because they were just so louder or whistling the whole time.
- 7:21Speaker 4: But I think I think we done ourselves. We did.
- 7:24Speaker 4: We've done ourselves proud because the first game, everyone was
- 7:27Speaker 4: talking about us after it because we should have won
- 7:30Speaker 4: the game. We missed a penalty in the first.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Time I watched that game, I think that was the
- 7:34Speaker 3: first time that Alistair Johnson kind of came because yeah,
- 7:37Speaker 3: I think there was one the Celtic already.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I remember watching that one. So then on the
- 7:42Speaker 4: build up to the games, Alistair was talking about it,
- 7:45Speaker 4: and I think during that time he actually went to
- 7:47Speaker 4: go and get his medical done to go to Celtic
- 7:50Speaker 4: because he obviously from being from Scotland. He was like
- 7:53Speaker 4: asking you all, he was asking me questions and of
- 7:56Speaker 4: course I was like, this is incredible, got to Celic
- 8:00Speaker 4: and so yeah, he played that first game and we
- 8:04Speaker 4: missed that penalty in the first half and then they
- 8:06Speaker 4: went and broke on us and scored, but we dominated
- 8:09Speaker 4: I think most of the game, which and everyone enjoyed
- 8:12Speaker 4: watching us play. So everyone's talking about Yeah, it was.
- 8:16Speaker 4: It was quite a young, energetic team and surprises like
- 8:20Speaker 4: in the World Cup, you get these surprised teams that
- 8:23Speaker 4: you've never really spoke about or seen, or.
- 8:25Speaker 2: When we're killer the then the lasted was that eighty.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Two, twenty six years before before we qualified. I think
- 8:34Speaker 4: it was something. But yeah, obviously I grew up watching
- 8:41Speaker 4: Scotland and France ninety eight. It was my first memory
- 8:44Speaker 4: of football.
- 8:45Speaker 2: That makes us feel old. Was young?
- 8:50Speaker 4: I was I was only eight years old, but that
- 8:53Speaker 4: was like, that was incredible watching watching that.
- 8:56Speaker 3: So to touch on that side it because I read
- 8:59Speaker 3: up cheek you managed to come on in the Morocco game. Yeah,
- 9:02Speaker 3: which stage of the game?
- 9:03Speaker 4: Twenty minutes to go, we're too one down?
- 9:07Speaker 2: What was your thought process that? I'm just happy to
- 9:09Speaker 2: be on the pitch.
- 9:10Speaker 4: So there was a breaking play, so I think there's
- 9:12Speaker 4: someone getting treatment and someone was going to warm up.
- 9:17Speaker 4: So I was like, no, I'm not going on. I'm
- 9:19Speaker 4: not going on just and then next minute someone just
- 9:22Speaker 4: went it's pretty get ready. I was like what I
- 9:26Speaker 4: was like running I ran down to warm up. I
- 9:28Speaker 4: think I've done two jobs, and the next minute it
- 9:30Speaker 4: was it, right, you're going on. So I ran over
- 9:32Speaker 4: and put my strip on and I'm like this is
- 9:34Speaker 4: the moment, this is this is incredible, and he's speaking
- 9:37Speaker 4: to me, and then as I'm going on, there's a
- 9:40Speaker 4: breaking play. So it's and I'm just sort of standing
- 9:42Speaker 4: looking and I'm seeing my name on like this score.
- 9:45Speaker 4: I'm just like I ran on the pitch and I
- 9:48Speaker 4: think they were still by a breaking play. So I
- 9:51Speaker 4: sort of took it all in. I had that ten
- 9:54Speaker 4: seconds where I was just like, I'm playing at the
- 9:56Speaker 4: World Cup here, this is incredible, and I sort of looked.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Over with my family. It's just the family all there.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Yes, this is this is unreal, like I've dreamt of
- 10:06Speaker 4: grew up playing my brother on the backfields of a
- 10:09Speaker 4: small village and I'm here at guitar playing against The.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Reason I'm saying that is because I had a some
- 10:17Speaker 3: odd experience back in that ninety one that you're saying
- 10:20Speaker 3: is the first term that you can recollect, and it
- 10:23Speaker 3: was Morocco. The last game was unlike you and never gone.
- 10:27Speaker 3: I get told to going warm up and I think
- 10:29Speaker 3: in the days it was only three subs, I think,
- 10:34Speaker 3: and the Scott.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Booth went on before me.
- 10:37Speaker 3: So that was my realization that I wasn't going to
- 10:39Speaker 3: quite so it's just when I looked at your thing,
- 10:41Speaker 3: then i've seen came back to me.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Fortunately for you you got on the pack.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's the thing yours. You're getting that chance
- 10:49Speaker 4: of going on. But you know there's some other players
- 10:52Speaker 4: that haven't even had a chance tier. So afterwards you're
- 10:57Speaker 4: excited and you're loving it, but at the same time
- 10:59Speaker 4: you're like very aware that other people haven't got the chance,
- 11:03Speaker 4: got the chance to go on the pitch, so you're
- 11:05Speaker 4: very What.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Was the squadrons? We were twenty is it twenty in
- 11:09Speaker 2: our squad that was more than that. I thought it
- 11:11Speaker 2: was about it to think it's about twenty three hours
- 11:15Speaker 2: as well, because I think they went bigger again this
- 11:17Speaker 2: year and the tw twenty Sexes, although I think teams
- 11:23Speaker 2: with the heat over the.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Little probably used. There's most subsequent news as well. It's
- 11:27Speaker 1: change half your team there.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Yeah, you start, there's only well, to be fair, they've
- 11:33Speaker 4: changed that. I obviously changed the schedule and the system
- 11:36Speaker 4: of it. Now there's more teams there, there's more chance
- 11:39Speaker 4: to be qualifying for the next whereas when we went
- 11:42Speaker 4: to play three games, you don't get through that.
- 11:44Speaker 2: You yeah done.
- 11:46Speaker 4: It was like the whole build up to it was
- 11:48Speaker 4: so like and then you get there and then.
- 11:50Speaker 2: It's already there.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Then for that full period by the time must have
- 11:54Speaker 4: been a month. As long as a month was, it
- 11:57Speaker 4: must have been a month. I think we were there
- 11:59Speaker 4: from even just fell laid up the build up of
- 12:04Speaker 4: the games and I'm just gone so quick, and like
- 12:06Speaker 4: the family came over for like a week just to
- 12:09Speaker 4: make sure they've got the games. So then I used
- 12:12Speaker 4: to come over a week to see all the games
- 12:14Speaker 4: and I was like, right, let's go back home. That's
- 12:17Speaker 4: it done.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I think that's time as well. We were talking about
- 12:20Speaker 3: it before they come morning. The timings as well. Yeah,
- 12:24Speaker 3: the games last time. What I remembered for the guitar
- 12:26Speaker 3: one was the first game is ten in the morning,
- 12:28Speaker 3: which was good. Then you watched them through the day
- 12:30Speaker 3: because this one is going to be they're all going
- 12:32Speaker 3: to be up through at night.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Yeah, the same in two thousand and two it was late.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I in Japan and ninety four I remember ninety four
- 12:42Speaker 2: in the US. Is it don't do it?
- 12:45Speaker 4: Obviously they're not going to be like Britain need to
- 12:47Speaker 4: see it, they need to see it. They're just like,
- 12:50Speaker 4: what's the best for us. Yeah, and that's what they've
- 12:53Speaker 4: done and you can see the press ticket pricing as well.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Yeah, put your thoughts in the current Canadian team in
- 13:01Speaker 2: this time round.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Do you think they've got a chance for getting out
- 13:03Speaker 3: of that group with a Swiss guitar fund enough bow Well.
- 13:07Speaker 4: I feel like they made a strong, a strong statement
- 13:10Speaker 4: in appointing the likes of Jesse Marsh. Right after we
- 13:14Speaker 4: had done the World Cup, they were then looking for
- 13:17Speaker 4: a new manager and Jesse Marsh was like one of
- 13:20Speaker 4: the top ones in Europe at a time. While he
- 13:23Speaker 4: used to you've done well with leads in Leipsick and
- 13:27Speaker 4: he was well known, so to get land him in
- 13:30Speaker 4: the job and the style of play that he's implementing
- 13:33Speaker 4: with them and the talent that's coming through just at
- 13:37Speaker 4: this stage, and because it's not a qualifying stage for
- 13:41Speaker 4: them this time, it's more they've just been playing friendlies.
- 13:44Speaker 4: But they've done They've done the Cup of America for
- 13:48Speaker 4: the first time. They got invited to that and they
- 13:51Speaker 4: got to the semifinals, which was incredible for them. But
- 13:56Speaker 4: they've got a really strong squad and with their group,
- 14:00Speaker 4: think they've got a real chance of I've getting through
- 14:02Speaker 4: to the next stage and you never know what they
- 14:05Speaker 4: can do.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I've kind of dark Horse. Yeah, the pool Scotland,
- 14:09Speaker 2: there's the other agency split.
- 14:14Speaker 4: What we boy in Scotland top of it because all
- 14:16Speaker 4: his mates were getting on so I was like, I'll
- 14:18Speaker 4: get your scott on top. But they've all got kind
- 14:20Speaker 4: of the tops as well from the last World Cup
- 14:23Speaker 4: by so will be It'll be a strange one, but
- 14:26Speaker 4: I'm excited because I'll get to work.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I could problem I have been both teams would have progressed.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I don't even know I've looked. I haven't never looked
- 14:33Speaker 3: at the World Cup chat. Yeah, I don't really know
- 14:35Speaker 3: where people can meet.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Any idea.
- 14:38Speaker 4: I have absolutely no idea.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Yeah, there's that many teams. Are I concentrating the first
- 14:43Speaker 2: tie game?
- 14:44Speaker 4: I think that's what everyone's That's what everyone's focuses on,
- 14:47Speaker 4: isn't it the first three games? Let's see what happens.
- 14:50Speaker 4: It's so strange that the last World Cup, the group
- 14:54Speaker 4: that they had is pretty much similar to the group
- 14:56Speaker 4: they've got now. Yeah, Brazil, Morocco.
- 14:59Speaker 2: And I know almost know. I remember I was actually
- 15:01Speaker 2: going to it was a bit of Paris.
- 15:04Speaker 3: I was in Glass were putting that talking out and
- 15:06Speaker 3: you've seen Brazil Morocco and you were just waiting on
- 15:08Speaker 3: the Norway when it was amazing. What is your So
- 15:12Speaker 3: that was your first kind of memories of the World Cup?
- 15:15Speaker 3: Which is would you have been in? Which are highlights
- 15:20Speaker 3: of growing up with the World Cups? We were talking
- 15:22Speaker 3: about it with something else where. I can remember eighty two,
- 15:26Speaker 3: eighty six, ninety right, I was a young kid at
- 15:29Speaker 3: the time, asking me to piece things together. In recent times,
- 15:32Speaker 3: it's a wee bit more difficult kind of forget the years,
- 15:35Speaker 3: you forget the years. What was the things in the
- 15:37Speaker 3: World Cup over the years that have stuck.
- 15:39Speaker 4: At Francis it was just the song, the song that
- 15:43Speaker 4: went with it. Yeah, and then obviously Scotland being involved
- 15:46Speaker 4: with it. There was a big, massive hype in the
- 15:48Speaker 4: first game, and obviously drawing with Brazil, which was was
- 15:53Speaker 4: a drop in it.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Beat Beat John Collins, Collis.
- 16:00Speaker 4: And Taffarel and gold and stuff like that. You just
- 16:03Speaker 4: you just sort of remember these things about it. And
- 16:07Speaker 4: then after that, I don't think it was as much
- 16:11Speaker 4: because Scotland weren't in it at a young age, but
- 16:15Speaker 4: then we had one and I think it was South Africa,
- 16:19Speaker 4: the South African World Cup where I was on my
- 16:22Speaker 4: cousin stag Do, so we were watching the football while
- 16:25Speaker 4: having like a holiday. Remember that one for the boob
- 16:30Speaker 4: Zellas as well. It's just the balls, the ball when
- 16:33Speaker 4: I was.
- 16:36Speaker 2: If they could handle that. I can't remember the name
- 16:38Speaker 2: of the ball. South African one.
- 16:42Speaker 4: It was brilliant though, and I really enjoyed it because
- 16:44Speaker 4: you just sit and watching the football constantly. And then
- 16:47Speaker 4: I remember, I think it was a Euros I watched
- 16:50Speaker 4: and we got to watch some of the Euros in
- 16:53Speaker 4: high school and it was like we watched the Portugal
- 16:55Speaker 4: game in maths and you're sitting there watching it and
- 16:59Speaker 4: you just just loving it and join it at the time.
- 17:03Speaker 4: So I those memories will stick with you when you're
- 17:06Speaker 4: watching the football.
- 17:08Speaker 2: What about getting back to this one? Then you predicting,
- 17:11Speaker 2: do you see the team's being strong?
- 17:14Speaker 3: Teams I looked at I still think France with the
- 17:17Speaker 3: squad they've got, you can never discount Spain, but it
- 17:20Speaker 3: was Portugal I looked at the other day as well,
- 17:21Speaker 3: we've got three Peter they could be strong.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Which is the teams that stick out exactly. It's very
- 17:29Speaker 4: similar I don't think you can disco to England as well, unfortunately.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Think so the only thing I looked at when I
- 17:36Speaker 3: was looking at that they do have to surpass I
- 17:39Speaker 3: think Brazil and Argentina, and that's right.
- 17:42Speaker 4: I mean they never really never really thought Argentina would
- 17:47Speaker 4: win it lasting, I know, but the little guy was
- 17:51Speaker 4: pure magic, so it made it special.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I think him winning it because I.
- 17:56Speaker 4: Think I watched I watched one when I was in
- 18:00Speaker 4: the holiday, and I think it might be neuros. No,
- 18:03Speaker 4: it was a World Cup because the Argentina played, and
- 18:07Speaker 4: you watched Argentina and you just like they were a team,
- 18:11Speaker 4: and then you watched them the last one just like
- 18:15Speaker 4: they were a proper team and they were like we're
- 18:16Speaker 4: not getting beat here, which really made the difference. And
- 18:20Speaker 4: then you've got the magic and message.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Mess in the final. I mean I've watched the final
- 18:25Speaker 2: back the finals. Maybe one of the best.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Ones, one of the best one of them, maybe the
- 18:29Speaker 4: best one. Yeah, absolutely, that saved right the end.
- 18:32Speaker 2: It's just the savor end for me.
- 18:34Speaker 3: When Argentina take that El France about I'll never really
- 18:38Speaker 3: And then suddenly came back with the goals from.
- 18:42Speaker 4: Bappi yeah, it reminded me of It reminded me of
- 18:47Speaker 4: the Liverpool Champions League final. I just watched that other
- 18:50Speaker 4: day on you See My game. That was just incredible
- 18:55Speaker 4: and that was sort of similar. That game was just
- 18:58Speaker 4: ebbed and flowed.
- 18:59Speaker 3: And then that that my Land game. I was placing
- 19:04Speaker 3: France on my own. My son had just been born,
- 19:07Speaker 3: and I was my wife has no interest in football
- 19:09Speaker 3: at all in my Land. Three an hour and a
- 19:11Speaker 3: half time and Liverpool surely come back into it and
- 19:15Speaker 3: I've jumped up and she's like wait then, I said,
- 19:17Speaker 3: I'm trying to explain to I says it was three
- 19:18Speaker 3: now they were done, and Dusty, that's no three each, nothing, no,
- 19:25Speaker 3: And I'm wanting some of them, desperate to say somebody
- 19:27Speaker 3: and he's watching this. Yeah, that was incredible, but that
- 19:30Speaker 3: final was pretty similar as well. The French and Argentina.
- 19:34Speaker 4: One someone to score four goals and a final and
- 19:38Speaker 4: not and not the trophy.
- 19:41Speaker 2: That's quite maybe this year, although maybe this year if
- 19:44Speaker 2: they can get it going France.
- 19:47Speaker 4: M hmm, no, you're looking, Vince.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I think I could side. I don't know. I think
- 19:53Speaker 2: they've got a.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Great squad Spain. I just love watching Spain. Yeah, I
- 19:58Speaker 4: love watching Spain.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I'm feeling the Dutch all I could one if they
- 20:02Speaker 1: never people normally get.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Which Doesney fit way?
- 20:07Speaker 1: You know they kind of if it's some really good
- 20:10Speaker 1: teams over the years Dutch, but they've never seen any
- 20:14Speaker 1: You feel the heat most committee, Yeah, consideration.
- 20:19Speaker 4: Absolutely, depending what time they play, that's it will be
- 20:25Speaker 4: a good spectacle. And obviously over there the big stadiums
- 20:29Speaker 4: and everything like that would be and it will be
- 20:31Speaker 4: different because there's so many different teams, like people that
- 20:35Speaker 4: never qualify for World Cup before, so come up against
- 20:37Speaker 4: different Hell, i'd heard of them before because I was
- 20:42Speaker 4: over there that was against them. I hadn't played against them,
- 20:46Speaker 4: but I saw them in some of the other games.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Because as soon as you, as soon as I like
- 20:50Speaker 4: went over to Canada, you then get used to the
- 20:53Speaker 4: teams over there.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 20:54Speaker 4: That's is that it's right. It's right above South America.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Was right above Venezuela on that coast next to Aruba.
- 21:05Speaker 4: I searched the other day because I knew that it
- 21:08Speaker 4: was somewhere in those regions, you know those islands that
- 21:11Speaker 4: come off America right downstairs.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Yeah, another one was.
- 21:17Speaker 4: So we came up against them, and a lot of
- 21:19Speaker 4: them were were from Holland.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Because the game at the Scotland there was a lot
- 21:23Speaker 3: of ex Dutch lead players. Yeah, they were saying, obviously
- 21:28Speaker 3: Dick advocat in charge.
- 21:30Speaker 2: The boy took his goal really well. At a start
- 21:32Speaker 2: they were I thought they were all right.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Yeah, see they're very physical and that's I think that's
- 21:40Speaker 4: why they played them, is because they're going to come
- 21:42Speaker 4: against Haiti, who are the same we've played. We played them,
- 21:47Speaker 4: we played them over in Haiti.
- 21:49Speaker 2: How did you find that?
- 21:50Speaker 4: That was aggress That was crazy, the most intimidating place
- 21:54Speaker 4: I've ever been.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Seriously, Yeah, because I think a lot of their fans
- 21:57Speaker 2: are going to be there as well.
- 21:59Speaker 4: They'll try, but that was that was something I've never
- 22:04Speaker 4: experienced before. Like we traveled during the night to arrive
- 22:07Speaker 4: there at the hotel and then you go then we
- 22:10Speaker 4: got like a police escort to the because we just
- 22:13Speaker 4: arrived at night when the fans like just the place
- 22:18Speaker 4: in general, right, And obviously we arrived at night and
- 22:21Speaker 4: then went to a hotel and then we traveled for
- 22:25Speaker 4: the game the next day. We literally just stopped in
- 22:28Speaker 4: and then we're off again. But we got a police escort.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Did you win we won one? No, I think pretty
- 22:36Speaker 4: sure won one now. But they were very aggressive and
- 22:39Speaker 4: the heat was ridiculous, but the fans were. Yeah, it
- 22:43Speaker 4: was like a hostel and environment to be in. But
- 22:47Speaker 4: the police escort down down the street because it's not
- 22:50Speaker 4: a big place. So you're going in the bus and
- 22:53Speaker 4: it's it's houses without any doors, and everyone's out in
- 22:57Speaker 4: the streets and they arriving riving at the stadium with
- 23:00Speaker 4: the police escort, and there's just it's not really a road,
- 23:04Speaker 4: it's just like a path and folk are just on
- 23:07Speaker 4: the road and you're just I was sitting on the
- 23:09Speaker 4: bus and I was like, oh my god, what's going
- 23:11Speaker 4: on here? But it was absolutely nuts. And now played
- 23:14Speaker 4: the game and then went back to hotel, got everything
- 23:16Speaker 4: ready and then we were just away. And then of course,
- 23:20Speaker 4: like I think it was like a couple of months
- 23:22Speaker 4: or a few months later, we heard the news about
- 23:24Speaker 4: their their prime minister or a president got assassinated. We're
- 23:29Speaker 4: like Jesus, like, we've just been that's crazy, absolutely nuts.
- 23:36Speaker 4: So that would be that, yeah, we do, we do.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Can I write these teams off? But at your perila, absolutely, it's.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Kill us how showed is at the weekend before they
- 23:46Speaker 3: get down to ten men. But I think it was
- 23:48Speaker 3: a good run out for us. It gives us a
- 23:49Speaker 3: wee bit of what.
- 23:51Speaker 2: We're going to be up against that.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, just the downside a bit of Billy Gilmore, Yes,
- 23:56Speaker 4: you feel, you feel for him. And there was another
- 23:59Speaker 4: boy from for Canada. He he played, he played played
- 24:04Speaker 4: his I think it was a final he played in
- 24:06Speaker 4: and he tore his c L.
- 24:08Speaker 1: You came back from injury to play and they were
- 24:10Speaker 1: couped in you.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Yeah, you just get back and we had I'd done
- 24:13Speaker 4: my a c L in November, so twelve months before
- 24:18Speaker 4: the World Cup, so I had that that was your target.
- 24:23Speaker 4: That was that was the only thing that was keeping
- 24:24Speaker 4: me going was that target, and I had phoned the
- 24:29Speaker 4: To be fair, Canada were unbelievable during that period of time.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Their physio looked after me as much as Saint Johnson's
- 24:37Speaker 4: looked after me. Our physio went on maternity leave and
- 24:41Speaker 4: then we had another physio part time who was coming
- 24:45Speaker 4: out Saint Johnston. So it was tough. But the Canadian
- 24:49Speaker 4: physio was like phone me any time, I mean, just
- 24:52Speaker 4: constantly helped me through the rehab and then the there
- 24:56Speaker 4: the whole squad reached out to me as well, sent
- 24:59Speaker 4: me love the messages and whatnot, and they took care
- 25:03Speaker 4: of me, which I'll never forget, and obviously support my
- 25:07Speaker 4: family helped as well. Yeah, but then the manager as
- 25:11Speaker 4: well was talking throughout the twelve months, just being like,
- 25:17Speaker 4: keep yourself going, keep yourself going, and then sort of
- 25:19Speaker 4: got to that stage where he was like, if you
- 25:22Speaker 4: get yourself fit, there's a good chance you might be
- 25:26Speaker 4: in the squad. So I was like, right, I need
- 25:28Speaker 4: to keep going. That's the incentive I needed. And I
- 25:31Speaker 4: was like, ready, keep going and keep going. Then you
- 25:33Speaker 4: have the setbacks as well, and you're like, you know
- 25:35Speaker 4: what's going to happen here, And then you got to
- 25:38Speaker 4: the point where you're back playing again and you're like, right,
- 25:40Speaker 4: I need to seem to be fit and playing well.
- 25:44Speaker 4: And so I got that, and then I think it
- 25:47Speaker 4: was I've just been pulled into the office by the
- 25:51Speaker 4: man calm device at the time, and he was like
- 25:54Speaker 4: I've spoken to you and he says you're you're involved
- 25:58Speaker 4: in the World Cup and I was like, no, I
- 26:01Speaker 4: won't say anything just now, though, Okay, how.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Should resist the Gold's end of the season, was us
- 26:05Speaker 2: to be back.
- 26:06Speaker 4: This was so this was this would have been like
- 26:08Speaker 4: just before November. So it was like we've played that game.
- 26:15Speaker 4: I think it was against Mother or something. And then
- 26:19Speaker 4: after the game, like I think we draw on the
- 26:21Speaker 4: game and everything was said, and then right at the
- 26:25Speaker 4: end he was like and just to let us all
- 26:27Speaker 4: know that Spinny's being picked up for the Garadian Canadian
- 26:32Speaker 4: team for the World Cup. And I was just like,
- 26:34Speaker 4: I was in tears. It was just emotional, Yeah, because
- 26:37Speaker 4: I thought back to when a dumb injury, which was
- 26:41Speaker 4: like at Hamden twelve months ago, and I'm now here
- 26:45Speaker 4: sitting going to the World Cup, the biggest stage in football.
- 26:49Speaker 4: So it's just a crazy journey but one I'll always
- 26:52Speaker 4: remember and be very grateful for.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Well, we're going to put you on the spot, and
- 26:57Speaker 2: I think we should do this, should put you in
- 26:59Speaker 2: a spot. We'll go for a winner. Winner and our
- 27:03Speaker 2: top goal scorer, does he need to be combined.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Tops? I mean you would look at you would look
- 27:14Speaker 4: at like a hurricane. But he just doesn't score that
- 27:18Speaker 4: many goals in international football, does he?
- 27:20Speaker 2: Hopefully not.
- 27:25Speaker 4: I think I think the way things are going I
- 27:30Speaker 4: think I think spans Man a sneaky feeling there. They'll
- 27:35Speaker 4: come good because they've been good the past few years.
- 27:38Speaker 4: And then goal scorer. I would go with the likes on.
- 27:46Speaker 4: I mean, he's got to be up there. I think.
- 27:50Speaker 1: I'll go with him and anyone anyone that taking penalties
- 27:53Speaker 1: a chance can takes the penalties from England, don't they.
- 27:57Speaker 1: I'm going to that Coss dark horse Canada.
- 28:03Speaker 2: In the Canada, I think I watched. I watched last night.
- 28:06Speaker 2: I quickly look any he didn't even have They're.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Good, Like, I mean, did you watch the game last night?
- 28:14Speaker 4: I didn't watch it last night. I saw that one day.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Boy my boy was telling about him before as a
- 28:22Speaker 2: ball of Daddy watched the boy score to get it go.
- 28:27Speaker 4: I love those players that you've never really heard of
- 28:30Speaker 4: and they come alive in the World Cup, Like when
- 28:33Speaker 4: we played the World Cup with the boy for Morocco
- 28:36Speaker 4: and I can't pronounce his name, but he played center.
- 28:42Speaker 2: In New Yeah, and he got move.
- 28:46Speaker 4: He got a move. Straight after the World Cup we
- 28:48Speaker 4: went from like.
- 28:49Speaker 2: I think that's the big I think that platform that
- 28:52Speaker 2: you're on at the.
- 28:53Speaker 3: World Cup for for terms of players unless and known
- 28:56Speaker 3: if you'd you've seen it through the years of somebody
- 28:58Speaker 3: stars end up getting.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Move on the back of that absol.
- 29:01Speaker 4: You can just play that couple of games and team.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Get to the Semis. Yep, Spain put them in No
- 29:10Speaker 2: the last Spell Cup. The beat spender, do not.
- 29:14Speaker 4: Morocco. Moroccle got to the Semis, and so did Croatia,
- 29:18Speaker 4: who were both so Argentina and France played so Argentina
- 29:24Speaker 4: Beati so they did in France Morocco, so they did both.
- 29:33Speaker 2: The round before. That's what I'm talking about four years ago.
- 29:37Speaker 2: I can't slow slow Bubna. Well that was great mate.
- 29:47Speaker 3: I look forward to Canada drawings Scotland and look forward
- 29:51Speaker 3: to that will be for your household. But wish Canada
- 29:55Speaker 3: all the best and thanks you time to thank you much.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Thank
