- 1:02Speaker 1: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:05Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that He has
- 1:08Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. Now, if
- 1:11Speaker 1: you miss a portion of today's broadcast or would like
- 1:13Speaker 1: to recommend it to a friend, you can hear this
- 1:16Speaker 1: program anytime online at Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now
- 1:21Speaker 1: here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:23Speaker 2: When Apoulos was in carn Paul traveled through the interior
- 1:28Speaker 2: regions and came to Ephesus. He found some disciples and
- 1:33Speaker 2: asked them, did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believe? No,
- 1:39Speaker 2: they told him, we haven't even heard that there is
- 1:44Speaker 2: a Holy Spirit. Then with what baptism were you baptized?
- 1:50Speaker 2: He asked them, with John's baptism? They replied, All said
- 1:56Speaker 2: John baptized with a baptism of repenting, telling the people
- 2:02Speaker 2: that they should believe in the one who would come
- 2:06Speaker 2: after him, that is in Jesus. On hearing this, they
- 2:11Speaker 2: were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And
- 2:15Speaker 2: when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy
- 2:20Speaker 2: Spirit came on them, and they began to speak with
- 2:25Speaker 2: other languages and to prophesy. Now there were about twelve
- 2:31Speaker 2: men in all acts chapter nineteen and verses one through seven.
- 2:40Speaker 2: In our earlier accounts of the baptism of the Holy Spirit,
- 2:47Speaker 2: we have seen in each account a definite experience that
- 2:55Speaker 2: was followed by signs that proof that this experience was real.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You see, this is one area today that we have
- 3:11Speaker 2: difficulty understanding because I hate to be able to present
- 3:19Speaker 2: it in this manner. But we as believers perhaps still
- 3:28Speaker 2: want to have controlled over our own lives, and as
- 3:35Speaker 2: true followers of the Lord Jesus, we have surrendered that
- 3:41Speaker 2: control to him. If he's truly Lord and not only Savior,
- 3:49Speaker 2: then we will have surrendered our own will, our plans,
- 3:56Speaker 2: our own agenda, so that he can accomplish what he
- 4:01Speaker 2: wants through us. And I think that it is indicative
- 4:07Speaker 2: of where the Church stands today. How is it being
- 4:15Speaker 2: taught today, how much is being demonstrated in the power
- 4:24Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit. You see, as the scripture proclaimed
- 4:28Speaker 2: in the earlier reading, when it came to pass that
- 4:33Speaker 2: Paul actually came to the area in the region of
- 4:39Speaker 2: Ephesus when he found some believers. Now, when he refers
- 4:47Speaker 2: to these as believers, he is saying that these are
- 4:55Speaker 2: devout Jews. They were not gentiles. But it didn't make
- 5:04Speaker 2: any difference. It was simply a means of identifying where
- 5:10Speaker 2: they had been. And so when he asked them, why
- 5:16Speaker 2: First of all, why would he ask them? Because he
- 5:19Speaker 2: knew that they, as believers, must be able to fulfill
- 5:26Speaker 2: the Great Commission. It was normative. He wanted to make
- 5:32Speaker 2: sure that they were filled with the Holy Spirit, and
- 5:38Speaker 2: so he asked that question. He said, have you received
- 5:44Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit? Now, when we read that, he is
- 5:48Speaker 2: not just saying did you receive the Holy Spirit as
- 5:54Speaker 2: the seal of your belief? He's saying, have you received
- 6:00Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit in power? And when they heard this,
- 6:06Speaker 2: they knew then there was something lacking. They needed this
- 6:14Speaker 2: baptism of the Holy Spirit. So there was one thing.
- 6:19Speaker 2: They had been baptized in John's baptism. They had been
- 6:22Speaker 2: baptized for repentance. But in this particular case, they were
- 6:27Speaker 2: baptized before Jesus had been crucified, so knowing that the
- 6:33Speaker 2: Holy Spirit would have come may not have even been
- 6:39Speaker 2: an instruction to them. And yet here they were in Ephesus,
- 6:46Speaker 2: these twelve disciples who were followers of John the Baptist.
- 6:54Speaker 2: He told them, there is one that is coming at
- 7:00Speaker 2: after me. This is what John the Baptist proclaimed. He said,
- 7:05Speaker 2: one is coming after me who will baptize you with
- 7:12Speaker 2: fire and the Holy Spirit. You see, John knew that
- 7:19Speaker 2: he was baptizing unto repentance. He was calling those to
- 7:25Speaker 2: be prepared because the baptism that Jesus would provide could
- 7:32Speaker 2: not have been rendered until he was in his glorified
- 7:38Speaker 2: position after his resurrection. Even John didn't understand that Jesus
- 7:48Speaker 2: had to die. John, who had been sinced to death
- 7:54Speaker 2: by trickery and a means of being able to have
- 8:00Speaker 2: King Herod carry out a decree which presented the head
- 8:06Speaker 2: of John the Baptists as a sign of defeat. And
- 8:12Speaker 2: yet John sent his own disciples to Jesus, and he
- 8:17Speaker 2: asked them, He said, go and find out is this
- 8:24Speaker 2: the one? Now John had baptized Jesus, and he knew
- 8:29Speaker 2: he called him out. He said, behold the lamb of God,
- 8:35Speaker 2: who takes away the sin of the world. John as
- 8:41Speaker 2: a prophet, spoke those words, and yet didn't comprehend even
- 8:47Speaker 2: what he said. He even resisted Jesus when he came
- 8:53Speaker 2: into the Jordan River to be baptized. He said, I'm
- 8:58Speaker 2: not even worthy to untie your shoes. But Jesus said,
- 9:06Speaker 2: let it be so for now as an example, and
- 9:12Speaker 2: he baptized Jesus in water. And when Jesus came out
- 9:18Speaker 2: of the water, there was an open manifestation of power
- 9:26Speaker 2: that came upon him. Now, I want you to understand,
- 9:31Speaker 2: Jesus is God himself. He's not just a man, but
- 9:40Speaker 2: he is God in man, in man's form, because he
- 9:49Speaker 2: submitted to become a man. It even says in Philippians
- 9:56Speaker 2: that he didn't think that it was rob to be
- 10:01Speaker 2: equal with God, to be God himself, but he set
- 10:07Speaker 2: aside all of that so that he could take on
- 10:11Speaker 2: the form of a man and then to live the
- 10:16Speaker 2: life under the power of the Holy Spirit and die
- 10:22Speaker 2: for the sins of mankind. Jesus submitted his entire will
- 10:32Speaker 2: to the Father and allow the Holy Spirit to guide
- 10:38Speaker 2: every step that he took. One of the things that
- 10:43Speaker 2: we have to recognize is Jesus did no miraculous works,
- 10:50Speaker 2: none until he received power from the Holy Spirit. It
- 10:58Speaker 2: is important for us to understand. If our Lord submitted
- 11:06Speaker 2: his own will so that the power of the Holy
- 11:10Speaker 2: Spirit could glorify his Father, then we should do no less.
- 11:18Speaker 2: We must complete the work that he began. That is
- 11:27Speaker 2: our purpose. That's the whole reason. We're here, not to
- 11:33Speaker 2: gain earthly recognition, but to bring glory to God. So
- 11:41Speaker 2: I asked this question, how is the Holy Spirit being
- 11:47Speaker 2: taught in the body of Christ today? You know, from
- 11:54Speaker 2: the time of Pentecost until now, the Holy Spirit has
- 12:02Speaker 2: been baptizing believers all over the world. In some parts
- 12:09Speaker 2: of the world it is as normal as breathing. In
- 12:16Speaker 2: other parts it is considered radical, and many people shun
- 12:24Speaker 2: the experience. Why because, as I said in the initial
- 12:31Speaker 2: opening comments, perhaps we don't want to give up control.
- 12:40Speaker 2: And if we control ourselves, then certainly we're not surrendered
- 12:47Speaker 2: to the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit in dwells us,
- 12:52Speaker 2: and he is greater than any power that we could
- 12:57Speaker 2: confront on this earthly place, then why would we try
- 13:05Speaker 2: to do it in our own strength. Have we been
- 13:10Speaker 2: mis taught that the baptism in the Holy Spirit was
- 13:15Speaker 2: only a historical event for a few, or have we
- 13:22Speaker 2: been mistaught that the fullness of the Spirit is not
- 13:31Speaker 2: a need in the individual Christian life today. If we
- 13:38Speaker 2: have been mis talked, then we can be re talked.
- 13:44Speaker 2: We can be corrected in what we have been taught.
- 13:51Speaker 2: We need to know that the fullness of the Spirit
- 13:56Speaker 2: is not so that we gained great accomplishments here on
- 14:04Speaker 2: this earth. We are not here for that purpose. We
- 14:09Speaker 2: are here for one purpose, and that is to glorify God.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up.
- 14:20Speaker 1: But if you've just joined us, you've been listening to

- 14:57Speaker 1: and printed by Discovery House Publishers. Again here is Richard
- 15:01Speaker 1: to wrap up today's message.
- 15:05Speaker 2: If Jesus submitted to the power of the Holy Spirit,
- 15:11Speaker 2: we as his followers have been commended to do the same,
- 15:17Speaker 2: and we know that we will continue to do the
- 15:23Speaker 2: works of ministry just as Jesus said. If we know
- 15:31Speaker 2: that question must be answered individually, not did you receive
- 15:39Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit when you believe? But have we received
- 15:45Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit in the power to control and direct
- 15:52Speaker 2: us in no way, holding back, even surrendering our tongue
- 16:02Speaker 2: so that he can pray through us the deep mysteries
- 16:10Speaker 2: of God. We will look more into that in tomorrow's segment.
- 16:17Speaker 2: And that is today's Reflection on the Work.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Thank you Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
- 16:25Speaker 1: with the next edition of Reflections on the Word with
- 16:28Speaker 1: Richard King or Richard the entire team. This is Chuck
