- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This is episode number two hundred
- 0:18Speaker 1: and thirty six, and today in the show, we are
- 0:21Speaker 1: here again with another radio report, getting updates from across
- 0:26Speaker 1: the country on the latest white tail activity, conditions, behavior,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and the tactics that are working right this very moment.
- 0:46Speaker 1: All right, and welcome to this week's episode of Wired
- 0:49Speaker 1: to hunts wrote Radio, brought to you by Onyx. This
- 0:52Speaker 1: is your host spent anymore. And on the other side
- 0:55Speaker 1: of the line is Mark, who is yet again slacking
- 0:58Speaker 1: in front of a computer, so have him on his
- 1:02Speaker 1: cell phone. How's it going, Mark, you know, doing the
- 1:06Speaker 1: best I can here man. I'm driving home to Montana
- 1:10Speaker 1: right now. Um been l cutting over the past well
- 1:15Speaker 1: for five days, I was l cutting, and then I've
- 1:17Speaker 1: had a day and a half meetings and then it
- 1:20Speaker 1: was right to the truck and onto the road, try
- 1:24Speaker 1: and get home times, spent a little time in the
- 1:26Speaker 1: family and then be ready for the Michigan Archery opener.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So I'm very excited about all the aboves. Yeah, I
- 1:34Speaker 1: don't take back the slacking thing. How do you feel
- 1:38Speaker 1: about the Michigan opener? You will be hunting on Monday? Correct? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:43Speaker 1: Michigan opens on Monday. I'm really excited about it. Last
- 1:47Speaker 1: time I checked the weather, I've been. I've been as
- 1:49Speaker 1: long as the fifteen day outlook has been available. I've
- 1:51Speaker 1: been checking it out, and it's pretty good as far
- 1:54Speaker 1: as it gets not too hot. Um, it looks like
- 1:57Speaker 1: we're gonna have like just below averaged temperatures maybe, which
- 2:01Speaker 1: is usually a great thing. The only downside is that
- 2:05Speaker 1: those temperatures have been in place for a while now,
- 2:07Speaker 1: so it's gonna be like almost a week of like
- 2:10Speaker 1: sixty degree temperatures leading up to the opener. It's not
- 2:13Speaker 1: like it was really warm and then all of a
- 2:15Speaker 1: sudden we had that front hit. I think that usually
- 2:19Speaker 1: those temperatures I know you're not necessarily believe are on this,
- 2:22Speaker 1: but I feel like you get some that best activity
- 2:26Speaker 1: right when the change occurs. Just after the change. There's
- 2:28Speaker 1: not so much change in this situation, so I think
- 2:30Speaker 1: it'll be pretty decent. Um. It definitely bad, but I'm
- 2:34Speaker 1: not looking at it as like one of those blessed
- 2:37Speaker 1: cold fronts that get everything up and moving. Uh. So
- 2:41Speaker 1: that's my high level thought process at least. Yeah, a
- 2:45Speaker 1: lot of the people that I've talked to have referenced,
- 2:48Speaker 1: like today September as being one of the days to
- 2:52Speaker 1: be out there because this is at the beginning of
- 2:55Speaker 1: that cold front rout. Fresh people were talking about as
- 2:58Speaker 1: well that we're providing reports. So uh, you know, if
- 3:01Speaker 1: you're listening to this, the end of this week is
- 3:03Speaker 1: is going to be pretty solid or people are optimistic
- 3:06Speaker 1: at least for for that cold front. Hunting it right now? Yeah, yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 1: I think, Um, it's a great time of being the woods,
- 3:14Speaker 1: you know, for people's seasons that are just opening. It's
- 3:17Speaker 1: really nice because you've got the limited hunting pressure since
- 3:20Speaker 1: mostly no one has been out up to this point,
- 3:22Speaker 1: plus the good weather. I mean, this could be one
- 3:25Speaker 1: of your better chances of the year, at least before
- 3:27Speaker 1: the rut. So I'm gonna when I'll be hunting one
- 3:32Speaker 1: of my better early season stands and uh take a
- 3:37Speaker 1: stab on the Holy Field property and that doesn't work out,
- 3:40Speaker 1: I'll kind of back out and reassess the plan. But
- 3:44Speaker 1: opening night will be highly anticipated. Evening Master. Sure, Well,
- 3:50Speaker 1: I have not been hunting for a while now. I
- 3:52Speaker 1: think it's been over two weeks probably since I've been
- 3:54Speaker 1: in a tree stand. And like I said last week,
- 3:56Speaker 1: I'm kind of saving up those wife vacation days because
- 3:59Speaker 1: I'll are burning them here as soon as we get
- 4:01Speaker 1: off the phone. I haven't an a little punt this weekend, um,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and then after I get home from that, it is
- 4:08Speaker 1: like craziness until December. I have I don't know if
- 4:11Speaker 1: we've talked about this, but I have nine buck tags
- 4:13Speaker 1: this fall, so I will be busy once yea, once
- 4:18Speaker 1: we hit mid October, like then through December, I will
- 4:21Speaker 1: be maximum amount of haunting. So that is why I've
- 4:25Speaker 1: kind of taken my foot off of the gas pedal
- 4:26Speaker 1: for right now. I guess that's reasonable. If if your
- 4:30Speaker 1: wife's gonna let you go chase nine buck tack down,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I suppose you could take a few weeks off on
- 4:35Speaker 1: the front end to give her a little time of attention.
- 4:38Speaker 1: That's right, that's right. So on this week's episode, we
- 4:41Speaker 1: talked to Dave Bechtel from Chase Nation TV in Wisconsin.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Then we go to Tennessee and from down south hunting
- 4:48Speaker 1: it's Adam Cruz, and then we talked to Jake greg
- 4:51Speaker 1: Is from Daybreak Ranch in South Dakota and then from
- 4:53Speaker 1: Louisiana Bowl Hunter in Louisiana is Kyler Moppert, all Right,
- 4:59Speaker 1: sound like a great diversity of characters in areas. I
- 5:04Speaker 1: like that. I'm looking forward to hearing this one, especially since, um,
- 5:08Speaker 1: especially since I'll be actually hunting now white It's been
- 5:10Speaker 1: a little bit kind of like you, I had a
- 5:13Speaker 1: three weeks break from white tails, and that's kind of
- 5:16Speaker 1: been hurt my soul. So I'm ready to get after it.
- 5:19Speaker 1: So one thing I wanted to bring up was that
- 5:22Speaker 1: Jake from South Dakota brings it up on this week's episode.
- 5:24Speaker 1: He also brought it up in a rout Fresh report
- 5:27Speaker 1: a few weeks ago, and for me when he when
- 5:30Speaker 1: he said this, he was kind of a lightbulb moment um.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Last year, the night before I killed that big buck,
- 5:38Speaker 1: which is two days from now September, the night before that, UM,
- 5:42Speaker 1: I had a couple younger bucks, like two and a
- 5:44Speaker 1: half or three and a half year olds, come towards
- 5:48Speaker 1: the cornfield and they bed down before they got there,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and they basically stayed there until evening and then got
- 5:53Speaker 1: up and moved around. The next night, I saw it
- 5:56Speaker 1: again with a younger buck that he had came out
- 5:59Speaker 1: and bedded until like thirty minutes before shooting light ended,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and got up and went into the corner and it
- 6:04Speaker 1: was just like a really weird um and a kind
- 6:07Speaker 1: of a transition, betting that they had done right at sunset.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And Jake brings that up on this week's episode to
- 6:14Speaker 1: how that's something he's seen in the past, and he's
- 6:16Speaker 1: already seen it two or three times this year, and
- 6:18Speaker 1: we haunt similar areas. Now we're a few hundred miles apart,
- 6:21Speaker 1: but when I say similar areas, I mean big agriculture.
- 6:24Speaker 1: So if that's something that you've seen before, this is uh,
- 6:27Speaker 1: you know, really fascinating me that we both witnessed this
- 6:30Speaker 1: now kind of that end of September thing, uh slide
- 6:33Speaker 1: into my d M S. I'd love to to get
- 6:35Speaker 1: more reports on this same thing. Is that something you've
- 6:38Speaker 1: ever seen, Mark, that you've noticed bucks kind of going
- 6:42Speaker 1: into like a micro bed right before sunset? You know,
- 6:47Speaker 1: I'm not sure if I have to. I've heard of
- 6:50Speaker 1: similar stuff like that. I mean it makes sense. I've
- 6:53Speaker 1: seen like Doo's bonds definitely do that. I've seen like
- 6:56Speaker 1: a fawn or Doe come out feat for a little
- 6:58Speaker 1: bit and go use me, then go back in bed,
- 7:01Speaker 1: like just inside the edge of the timber or the cover. Um.
- 7:06Speaker 1: But I can't say I've seen Bucks do that, at
- 7:10Speaker 1: least not off the top of my head. So that's
- 7:11Speaker 1: the trust thing I order. I'm serious that that's about
- 7:15Speaker 1: it makes. I mean, I can sort of understand it.
- 7:17Speaker 1: They're going to move out survey of the situation, but
- 7:20Speaker 1: they're not quite ready to go out to the wide
- 7:22Speaker 1: open yet, so they're gonna hold off a little bit
- 7:24Speaker 1: because it's kind of like just prolonged the transitionary period.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I mean, is that kind of how you're staying it. Yeah,
- 7:29Speaker 1: Jake goes into more detail on it in the episode,
- 7:32Speaker 1: so you know, we don't have to go into it
- 7:33Speaker 1: too much more. But it's a trend that I'm fascinated
- 7:37Speaker 1: in tracking if other people have seen this too, like
- 7:39Speaker 1: this betting after the betting before going to food, so
- 7:44Speaker 1: that that's something that you know, with these late September
- 7:47Speaker 1: early October hunts, I'd be interested if other people witnessed
- 7:50Speaker 1: it all as well. Very interesting. I will be interested
- 7:54Speaker 1: to hear what he has to say about So maybe
- 7:56Speaker 1: we should shut up and get our run the party,
- 8:00Speaker 1: guest intrbutors on the line, all right, talk to you
- 8:03Speaker 1: next week. Mark. Thank you Spencer. Before we get to
- 8:07Speaker 1: our first update, let's pause for a word from our
- 8:09Speaker 1: sponsors at white Tail Properties. This week with white Tail Properties,
- 8:14Speaker 1: we are joined by Dave Skinner, a land specialist out
- 8:16Speaker 1: of Kentucky, and Davy is going to be telling us
- 8:19Speaker 1: about what to look for when buying a property with
- 8:21Speaker 1: intentions of early season white tail hunting in Kentucky. Our
- 8:26Speaker 1: season comes in in September, and if you're looking specifically
- 8:29Speaker 1: for that early season hunt, there's a couple of things
- 8:32Speaker 1: keep in mind. One, just like late season food sources
- 8:35Speaker 1: are king um. And there's two food sources in Kentucky
- 8:38Speaker 1: that trump everything else in September soy beans and acorns. UM.
- 8:43Speaker 1: If I'm looking to hunt specifically that early season, I
- 8:46Speaker 1: want to make certain I either have soy beans on
- 8:48Speaker 1: the property or adjacent to the property. More than anything,
- 8:51Speaker 1: though acorns are always number one, I want to know
- 8:54Speaker 1: that there's white oak trees on the property. UM. We
- 8:57Speaker 1: pose when those eight mons are falling that's where the
- 9:00Speaker 1: deer will be. If you'd like to learn more and
- 9:03Speaker 1: to see the properties that Dave currently has listed for sale,
- 9:06Speaker 1: visit whitetail properties dot com. Backslash skinner that's s k
- 9:11Speaker 1: I N N E r are And joining us on
- 9:15Speaker 1: the line first is Dave Bechtel out of Wisconsin from
- 9:18Speaker 1: Chase Nation TV. Now, Dave in Wisconsin, what would you
- 9:22Speaker 1: say the bucket activity has been lately on a scale
- 9:24Speaker 1: of one to ten on a steel one king at
- 9:28Speaker 1: say either a five or six. Right now the opening
- 9:31Speaker 1: part of the season, UM is extremely hot, UM higher
- 9:35Speaker 1: tempters and we normally have had UM so that's shut
- 9:38Speaker 1: down a lot of activity. And just this last week
- 9:42Speaker 1: we hit a cold front and gears started to be
- 9:45Speaker 1: on their feet. It's not super crazy, but now but um,
- 9:49Speaker 1: within the last couple of days they're starting to see
- 9:51Speaker 1: some people seating gear and a lot more activity. I
- 9:54Speaker 1: mean we've had a twenty degree difference within the last
- 9:58Speaker 1: couple of weeks. You took advantage of that cold front. Dave,
- 10:01Speaker 1: tell us a little bit about that setup where you
- 10:03Speaker 1: shot that nice white tail. Yeah, it was an area
- 10:07Speaker 1: that had scouted a bunch next to the season and
- 10:11Speaker 1: it's it's actually pretty sweet. It's a cameracks swamp up
- 10:15Speaker 1: a ton of cat tails, a ton of water that
- 10:17Speaker 1: puts up to a bean field and then has a
- 10:20Speaker 1: treeline that is just loaded with oaks. So it's a
- 10:23Speaker 1: perfect scenario as far as if they're in the oaks,
- 10:26Speaker 1: you're gonna be a getting them on the tree line.
- 10:28Speaker 1: But if it's in the bean field, you know you're
- 10:30Speaker 1: right there. And I was set up in a speeding area,
- 10:33Speaker 1: were on a transition right, Um, you know, when it
- 10:36Speaker 1: worked like clockwork, I ended up seeing a nice buck.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I thought the hunt was over and then next thing
- 10:44Speaker 1: I know, um, here this block came. He came right
- 10:47Speaker 1: out of the cat tails. Um but ten to fifteen
- 10:50Speaker 1: minutes before close and I was fortunate enough to make
- 10:54Speaker 1: a good shot at him, and you know, I had
- 10:56Speaker 1: a twenty yard recovery. So had those oaks not been there,
- 11:00Speaker 1: do you not think you would have had a chance
- 11:01Speaker 1: at that dear, I personally think he would head it
- 11:04Speaker 1: into the bean field. I do um a lot of
- 11:08Speaker 1: the oaks have dropped and then they were dropped in
- 11:11Speaker 1: leading up to the season. I do think there's a
- 11:13Speaker 1: lot of the ones on the ground right now. Um,
- 11:16Speaker 1: But I think he was probably working his way to
- 11:18Speaker 1: those beans. Um, because a lot of those um, we're
- 11:22Speaker 1: getting hit still. You know, I do a lot of
- 11:24Speaker 1: driving around at night, right before dark when I can't hunt, um,
- 11:28Speaker 1: trying to get a good gage on where I'm seeing gear.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And I was still catching a lot of deer out
- 11:32Speaker 1: in the bean field. Um. But with the temperatures being
- 11:35Speaker 1: the way they've done, they seem to be coming through
- 11:38Speaker 1: the beans. I mean right at dark. I mean, if
- 11:41Speaker 1: you're not set up within a certain range of the
- 11:44Speaker 1: bed or in the stage eunier, you of leading into
- 11:46Speaker 1: the to um, you're not seeing them. You mentioned on
- 11:50Speaker 1: that hunt that you saw another buck as well. Were
- 11:52Speaker 1: these two deer hanging out or are all the bachelor
- 11:55Speaker 1: groups around you broken out? They came in separate, um,
- 11:59Speaker 1: completely the separate. They were not running together. Um. My
- 12:02Speaker 1: wife is actually hunting on the edge of another bean
- 12:05Speaker 1: field not too far from me, and she had and
- 12:09Speaker 1: then something him with the figure block, and then I
- 12:11Speaker 1: had to um at the death that actually did come
- 12:14Speaker 1: through together. But I don't necessarily think they were in
- 12:17Speaker 1: the classroom groups still going. I mean, have you found
- 12:20Speaker 1: any signmaking start to appear then or do you think
- 12:22Speaker 1: we're little ways off that yet? As far as scrapes
- 12:24Speaker 1: and drubs, um, I have found some rubs um, not crazy. Uh,
- 12:31Speaker 1: few rubs have not been searching as of yet. You know.
- 12:35Speaker 1: On then in the beat it's strictly hunting and a
- 12:39Speaker 1: lot of areas and they go into It's either I
- 12:41Speaker 1: hang and hunt sum or I'm going in to kill um.
- 12:46Speaker 1: So I haven't done a lot of venturing just because
- 12:48Speaker 1: when the time has been right, I've been going in
- 12:50Speaker 1: to kill. Going forward. Then a six week or so,
- 12:54Speaker 1: what do you think that buckettivity is going to be
- 12:56Speaker 1: on a scale of one to tend in Wisconsin, skill
- 13:00Speaker 1: is one of ten. I think it's gonna start picking
- 13:02Speaker 1: up a bit. I would I would say solid six.
- 13:05Speaker 1: It's possibly even the seven year pulled front moving in.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I know Friday, we're supposed to have a more class
- 13:11Speaker 1: women in the highest fifty six. So Friday night with
- 13:15Speaker 1: the unit in the words I can start point. Congrats
- 13:19Speaker 1: on the great dear Dave, and thanks for joining me
- 13:22Speaker 1: and can alright and joining us on the line. Next
- 13:26Speaker 1: is Adam Cruise from Down South Hunting Podcast Tennessee. Now
- 13:30Speaker 1: Adam in Tennessee. What would you say the bucket activity
- 13:33Speaker 1: has been lately on a scale of one to ten.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna say, based off of troke cameras that I'm
- 13:39Speaker 1: running on our private farm in the southern part of Tennessee, Uh,
- 13:43Speaker 1: the movement's actually spiked, and I would put it around
- 13:46Speaker 1: a seven or an eight at this moment. Why do
- 13:49Speaker 1: you think that movement is spiked recently? You know, I
- 13:53Speaker 1: think it has a lot to do with where troke
- 13:54Speaker 1: cameras are positioned. Uh they're on side of sides of
- 13:58Speaker 1: ridges that hold all out of acorns, generally speaking, And
- 14:02Speaker 1: I think we've got these cameras and really good good
- 14:04Speaker 1: spots this year. A few weeks ago, we were barely
- 14:08Speaker 1: getting any bucks on camera at all, just maybe a
- 14:10Speaker 1: doe here and there. And then within the last week
- 14:14Speaker 1: or two, I'm getting hundreds of pictures of different different bucks.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I've probably got five new bucks that showed up on
- 14:21Speaker 1: camera within the last week. Not all of them are
- 14:25Speaker 1: mature bucks, but you know, just a ton of deer activity.
- 14:29Speaker 1: And I really think it's around, uh, the fact that
- 14:31Speaker 1: the acrons are now dropping and those deer kind of
- 14:34Speaker 1: moving into these traditional spots that they're in at this
- 14:37Speaker 1: time of year. How about other food sources? Do you
- 14:39Speaker 1: think the deer right now we're ignoring food plots and
- 14:42Speaker 1: soybeans stuff like that. I think it all depends on,
- 14:46Speaker 1: you know, what the situation the plot is. So on
- 14:49Speaker 1: the soybeans side, you know, if they're still green, Uh,
- 14:52Speaker 1: the deer will definitely be hitting them. And if if
- 14:55Speaker 1: I had access to stilly beans right now on on
- 14:57Speaker 1: some private ground, that's exactly where I would be hunting
- 15:01Speaker 1: until they turn brown. You mentioned you run around a
- 15:04Speaker 1: lot of trail cameras. That movement that you've been seeing,
- 15:07Speaker 1: is it mostly daytime or nighttime? It's about fifty fifty actually,
- 15:12Speaker 1: But when I say the of daytime, it's really it's
- 15:17Speaker 1: in that that dusk and dawntop situation. So right right
- 15:22Speaker 1: at first shooting light, we'll have deer hanging around for
- 15:25Speaker 1: maybe twenty minutes, and then kind of the same scenario
- 15:28Speaker 1: at the back half of the day, the deer starts
- 15:31Speaker 1: showing up maybe twenty minutes before the shooting light ends. Uh,
- 15:35Speaker 1: And then I'm getting some pictures of some dose dur
- 15:37Speaker 1: in the middle of the day. But as far as
- 15:38Speaker 1: the buck movement, there in the middle of the day.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I'm not getting just hardly any It mostly is at
- 15:44Speaker 1: night and then right there at first and last light.
- 15:47Speaker 1: So if we were trying to get in on these
- 15:49Speaker 1: deer right now in the morning, it would pretty much
- 15:53Speaker 1: be impossible unless we picked their their right bed that
- 15:56Speaker 1: they were going to, and then we might be able
- 15:58Speaker 1: to have some success. Really, the way to arrow a
- 16:01Speaker 1: buck right now is to actually be able to hunt
- 16:04Speaker 1: those evenings and get in there on them. Is that
- 16:06Speaker 1: something you think will change over these next few weeks
- 16:09Speaker 1: or our acorn is going to be the focus for
- 16:11Speaker 1: a while. It's gonna be my focus all the way
- 16:15Speaker 1: through October, really, and that's my main food source that
- 16:17Speaker 1: a hunt on on my private private land, and i'm
- 16:20Speaker 1: public land. I got some other areas that I can
- 16:22Speaker 1: hunt where there's some corns that's standing right now, and
- 16:25Speaker 1: as soon as that's cut, you know, I'm gonna be
- 16:27Speaker 1: heading hitting there as fast as I can and hopefully
- 16:30Speaker 1: beat everyone else there. Are you seeing any kind of
- 16:32Speaker 1: ruddy activity in the woods to this point as far
- 16:35Speaker 1: as scrapes or rubs, I'm not seeing any scrapes or rugs,
- 16:39Speaker 1: But I am getting some some deer on camera sparring,
- 16:43Speaker 1: which is always really fun to watch and have have
- 16:45Speaker 1: pictures of that. Well, how do you think the weather
- 16:48Speaker 1: changes things this time of year if we get a
- 16:50Speaker 1: good cold front or if a warm front comes through instead.
- 16:55Speaker 1: You know, this time of year, I'm just not certain
- 16:57Speaker 1: that the weather has that much effect when it actually dips,
- 17:00Speaker 1: But when it's hotter, I think that can really play
- 17:04Speaker 1: in a hunter's favor if you have a good source
- 17:07Speaker 1: of water and you know where your deer are bedding
- 17:10Speaker 1: and how they're getting to the water, plus being there
- 17:13Speaker 1: where food is nearby. So if you have that combination
- 17:16Speaker 1: of those three things, the food, water, and bed I
- 17:19Speaker 1: mean you've got a recipe for success. And really this
- 17:22Speaker 1: time of year, I think is it is one of
- 17:24Speaker 1: the easier times a year to kill a good buck
- 17:27Speaker 1: in the state of Tennessee. Uh, that's when I've traditionally
- 17:30Speaker 1: had the best encounters and killed my best deer. So
- 17:33Speaker 1: I'm really excited what the next couple of weeks brings.
- 17:36Speaker 1: And I the hot weather doesn't bother me because I
- 17:38Speaker 1: know where, I know where they like to go get
- 17:40Speaker 1: through water. Going forward, then the six week or so,
- 17:43Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket activity is going to
- 17:45Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Tennessee,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna say it's gonna probably stay in that six
- 17:52Speaker 1: to seven range. Uh. The temperature, like I said, I'm
- 17:56Speaker 1: not sure that it has much effect on deer movement
- 17:59Speaker 1: right now. It's actually but it is. It is kind
- 18:01Speaker 1: of lower temps than it has been. So if nothing else,
- 18:05Speaker 1: that excites me, and it gets wants me to get
- 18:07Speaker 1: in the wood more, you know, having to fight that
- 18:09Speaker 1: hundred degree temperatures and all that sweat coming down, and
- 18:12Speaker 1: that's not usually that much fun. We look forward to
- 18:14Speaker 1: hearing your updates on Doalla South hunting. Thanks for joining me, Adam,
- 18:18Speaker 1: Hey appreciate it. Spencer's truly pleasure, Sir, alright, and joining
- 18:23Speaker 1: us on the line. Next is Jake Gregg is from
- 18:25Speaker 1: Daybreak Ranch in South Dakota. Now, Jake in South Dakota.
- 18:29Speaker 1: What would you say the buck activity has been lately
- 18:31Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten right now in
- 18:35Speaker 1: central South Dakota. I'd probably say the the buck activities
- 18:40Speaker 1: around us six out of ten. And I say that
- 18:43Speaker 1: because they're still kind of transitioning from shedding their velvet
- 18:48Speaker 1: into their fall ranges and and you still see some
- 18:51Speaker 1: badsh with groups together and a lot of a lot
- 18:54Speaker 1: more nocturnal movement. Yet all the crops are still standing
- 18:58Speaker 1: for the most part. Uh So I would say it's
- 19:02Speaker 1: still it's probably a six out of ten. Do you
- 19:04Speaker 1: think those crops are gonna be coming out anytime soon?
- 19:07Speaker 1: And how does your strategy change once the combines get going. Yeah,
- 19:12Speaker 1: we've had some some actually wet weather lately and that's
- 19:16Speaker 1: kind of delaying the harvest a little bit. Some of
- 19:19Speaker 1: the soybeans have been harvested already, and I know there's
- 19:22Speaker 1: corn fields that are ready to come out, and actually
- 19:25Speaker 1: some that were cut for silage already, so that that
- 19:28Speaker 1: changes strategy a little bit. That's holding a lot of
- 19:31Speaker 1: the deer. The corn and sunflowers are holding most of
- 19:35Speaker 1: the deer at least are right around here for us.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And as those started to come out, those deer will
- 19:40Speaker 1: kind of slide into the next best cover nearest to
- 19:43Speaker 1: that typically, and so you might be looking to hunt.
- 19:47Speaker 1: If you're hunting field edges before, you might might be
- 19:51Speaker 1: hunting more of those cat tails, slews or or you
- 19:55Speaker 1: know all the bandoned farmyards where the deer slid away.
- 19:58Speaker 1: You know, a quarter mile from of that field where
- 20:00Speaker 1: they were living to the next best cover. Are you
- 20:04Speaker 1: finding any signmaking yet? Yeah, just the last three or
- 20:09Speaker 1: four days, we've really noticed more more rubbing posts that
- 20:13Speaker 1: we put out for the deer getting getting hit hard,
- 20:16Speaker 1: and these shelter belts have have rub lines starting to
- 20:19Speaker 1: pop up along them, and then and there's scrapes or
- 20:23Speaker 1: for stumbling onto too, so they're definitely starting to to
- 20:27Speaker 1: work those rubs and scrapes. Well. A few weeks ago, Jake,
- 20:32Speaker 1: you rotor report for rut Fresh, and you talked about
- 20:35Speaker 1: how when the crops are still standing like this, that
- 20:39Speaker 1: the bucks tend to do this thing where they have
- 20:41Speaker 1: a like a transition bedding that they get up out
- 20:45Speaker 1: of their bed late in the evening, they'll bed down
- 20:47Speaker 1: someplace else before dark, and there's an opportunity there for
- 20:50Speaker 1: hunters to get a chance at mature. Do you talk
- 20:53Speaker 1: about that a little bit? Sure? Yeah, Actually witnessed it
- 20:57Speaker 1: happened last night. I was sitting on uh dug out,
- 21:01Speaker 1: a water hole tucked inside of a sunflower field, and
- 21:06Speaker 1: two bucks came in there, and one came and actually drank,
- 21:10Speaker 1: the other one never did drink, but uh laid down
- 21:14Speaker 1: right at the end illegal shooting. He actually bedded down
- 21:18Speaker 1: right there in the grass next to the dugout, so
- 21:22Speaker 1: we see that a lot um an. It makes difficult
- 21:26Speaker 1: to kill deer, especially when they're doing something like that
- 21:30Speaker 1: where they might might be killable for the last half
- 21:34Speaker 1: hour of the day, but you've got to be really
- 21:36Speaker 1: right in their bedroom to do it, and right now
- 21:40Speaker 1: their bedroom is typically inside of these crop fields, so
- 21:43Speaker 1: it makes it pretty difficult unless you got a really
- 21:46Speaker 1: nice tucked away spot where that buck feels secure and
- 21:48Speaker 1: he's gonna get up and and maybe feed and just
- 21:51Speaker 1: stretch his feet. Seems like they'll you know, they're feeding
- 21:55Speaker 1: all day inside of a corn or sunflower field, snacking
- 21:58Speaker 1: and bedding down, and it's almost like they just have
- 22:02Speaker 1: to get up and move. But they're not, you know,
- 22:04Speaker 1: they're not confident enough to go out in the open
- 22:08Speaker 1: where they might not be so secure until after dark.
- 22:12Speaker 1: So we actually see a lot of our better dear
- 22:17Speaker 1: kind of in these secluded, uh tucked away spots inside
- 22:21Speaker 1: of a crop fields. But that's something that you won't
- 22:24Speaker 1: see as much once those crops don't come out correct. Well,
- 22:30Speaker 1: they can do it all fall, but you really see
- 22:34Speaker 1: it now when when the crops are standing and they
- 22:38Speaker 1: they don't really have a mission to be on per se.
- 22:42Speaker 1: So here as the fall progresses, those bucks will will
- 22:47Speaker 1: be more on the move and and and more killable
- 22:50Speaker 1: on their feet longer. But in the summer we see
- 22:52Speaker 1: that the most, when it's warmer, especially where they're they're
- 22:57Speaker 1: like I've like I said, it's almost like their version
- 23:00Speaker 1: of cabin fever. They just can't stand to be hidden
- 23:04Speaker 1: in that crop field any longer, and they need to
- 23:06Speaker 1: get out and move, but they don't want to move
- 23:08Speaker 1: where they're headed for that evening quite yet. Going forward,
- 23:12Speaker 1: then in the sixt week or so, what do you
- 23:14Speaker 1: think that buck activity will be on a scale of
- 23:16Speaker 1: one to ten in South Dakota. I think from here
- 23:19Speaker 1: on out it should only get better unless we get
- 23:22Speaker 1: some really hot weather or something that might might make
- 23:25Speaker 1: them move less. I would say in the next week
- 23:28Speaker 1: or so, i'd probably be uh seven or so out
- 23:31Speaker 1: of ten. And and all those bucks are they're callable.
- 23:36Speaker 1: But with this cold weather I thought that they would
- 23:38Speaker 1: be even more visible. But they're still moving pretty late
- 23:41Speaker 1: in the evening and and then you have to be
- 23:44Speaker 1: pretty lucky to catch them right first thing in the morning,
- 23:48Speaker 1: before they make it back to where they're going to
- 23:50Speaker 1: spend the rest of the day. So I would say
- 23:52Speaker 1: a seven out of ten for now. Well, good luck
- 23:54Speaker 1: to rest the season, Jake. I know you're gonna kill
- 23:57Speaker 1: a couple of good days this year. It's not even
- 23:58Speaker 1: a matter of if it's just in So thanks for
- 24:00Speaker 1: joining me. Hopefully you two Spencers appreciate it all and
- 24:05Speaker 1: joining me on the line. Last is Kyler Moppert from Louisiana.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Bowl Hunter in Louisiana. Now Kyler in Louisiana, what would
- 24:12Speaker 1: you say the buck activity has been lately? I'm scaled
- 24:15Speaker 1: one to ten, well a scale of one to ten
- 24:18Speaker 1: for our open areas are going to be Area ten,
- 24:21Speaker 1: Area three, Area seven. Um, we've got a pretty a
- 24:26Speaker 1: pretty substantial buck activity for this early in the season
- 24:29Speaker 1: because number one, those are the only areas that are open,
- 24:31Speaker 1: so only about maybe a quarter of the state is
- 24:34Speaker 1: open for hunting. But the reason why that is is
- 24:37Speaker 1: because that population of deer is more of a coastal
- 24:40Speaker 1: population that is um in a different ret cycle. They
- 24:45Speaker 1: read a lot earlier in the year than some of
- 24:48Speaker 1: our other deer we have in the state, it would
- 24:50Speaker 1: be comparable to maybe a Florida ret cycle of a
- 24:52Speaker 1: lot of their swamped here. So UM, on a scale
- 24:55Speaker 1: of one to ten, I'd probably put it about a
- 24:57Speaker 1: five or six right now with the heat, a lot
- 25:00Speaker 1: of oppressiveness with the weather and just being out in
- 25:04Speaker 1: the woods and uh not being easy for them to
- 25:07Speaker 1: want to move, pick up and move during the day.
- 25:09Speaker 1: But um, the other parts of the state, UM, I
- 25:13Speaker 1: would probably put it about a five or six, mainly
- 25:17Speaker 1: because there's no hunting pressure on them, but they're still
- 25:20Speaker 1: not moving just because I mean it's still been a
- 25:21Speaker 1: hundred degrees down here. But the season opens up on
- 25:24Speaker 1: Monday the first for the rest of the season as well. UM,
- 25:28Speaker 1: So this time of year, you know, people aren't exactly
- 25:32Speaker 1: that gung ho about getting out in the woods because
- 25:35Speaker 1: of you need about seven thermo cells and almost an
- 25:38Speaker 1: a C unit strap to your back. But if you
- 25:41Speaker 1: can get out in the woods and you can sit
- 25:43Speaker 1: in an area where you know you've got some um,
- 25:46Speaker 1: some rutted bucks moving through or you've got some bachelor
- 25:49Speaker 1: groups moving through that and haven't broken up yet, and
- 25:52Speaker 1: you've got a pretty good chance of uh seeing something.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And how did those setups vary for those guys who
- 25:57Speaker 1: are maybe hunting the route right now versus everyone else
- 26:00Speaker 1: who has an open or coming up on Monday. UM.
- 26:04Speaker 1: You know, so we we are a uh, we are
- 26:06Speaker 1: a state that does have legalized feeding UM. And this
- 26:09Speaker 1: is something that we actually talk a lot about on
- 26:11Speaker 1: on our podcast that We've got UM. That's kind of
- 26:15Speaker 1: a hot topic for a lot of people in the country.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Some people like it, some people don't. But the thing
- 26:19Speaker 1: that's interesting about Louisiana is that we hunt areas that
- 26:23Speaker 1: is so thick you have zero percent chance of ever
- 26:27Speaker 1: doing any type of spot and stock, any sort of
- 26:30Speaker 1: setting up on observation stands. And we're hunting thickets where
- 26:33Speaker 1: you might only have one small hole to put an
- 26:36Speaker 1: arrow in, and so UM, you've got to be able
- 26:39Speaker 1: to bring those deer in close without having to track
- 26:41Speaker 1: them all the time. But the setup is gonna be
- 26:44Speaker 1: UM pretty much the same. If you can attract the dose,
- 26:47Speaker 1: then you probably and it's the rut um you can
- 26:50Speaker 1: probably bring in some bucks in behind them. So what
- 26:52Speaker 1: I and what a lot of people do is, UM,
- 26:55Speaker 1: we're hunting a hundred yards from the feeder UM or
- 26:59Speaker 1: hunting a hund yards from where weever, wherever the food
- 27:01Speaker 1: sources that we're putting out, and we're trying to let
- 27:05Speaker 1: the doose pass and then focus in on the bucks
- 27:07Speaker 1: that may be behind them right and kind of get
- 27:10Speaker 1: out of that circle if you will, that that circle
- 27:14Speaker 1: of vulnerability around your feet are where a buck might
- 27:17Speaker 1: not come into. Get out behind that and hope that
- 27:20Speaker 1: you're on the right trail for them coming in. Do
- 27:23Speaker 1: those different deer populations in Louisiana react to weather differently?
- 27:28Speaker 1: Say you were to get a huge rainstorm for a
- 27:30Speaker 1: few days, or if a cold front comes in, do
- 27:33Speaker 1: you notice those two different populations acting differently when that happens. Absolutely? Um,
- 27:40Speaker 1: you know, I would say rain is our number one
- 27:43Speaker 1: motivator for getting getting deer up and moving. Um. We're
- 27:47Speaker 1: pretty uh, we're pretty level. When it comes to weather.
- 27:50Speaker 1: It's gonna either be hot or it's gonna be hotter.
- 27:53Speaker 1: We don't have a whole bunch of cold fronts coming through.
- 27:56Speaker 1: We don't have a whole bunch of, um, you know,
- 27:58Speaker 1: huge temperature swings until maybe into December, late January, Um,
- 28:03Speaker 1: but early in the season. If you're gonna hunt from
- 28:07Speaker 1: now until Thanksgiving, you pretty much know you're gonna be
- 28:10Speaker 1: in a short sleeve shirt and uh in ninety degrees
- 28:14Speaker 1: that you're gonna be hunting in once the sun comes up.
- 28:16Speaker 1: So um, like I said, it's pretty pretty uh stable
- 28:21Speaker 1: as far as weather for us. Unfortunately it's stable on
- 28:24Speaker 1: the hot end. Um. But because of that, the deer
- 28:29Speaker 1: you do see a lot of um, I wouldn't say
- 28:32Speaker 1: a lot of it, you do. You do see primarily
- 28:34Speaker 1: very crepuscular deer where they are only moving in the morning,
- 28:38Speaker 1: they're only moving in the evening, and there's not a
- 28:40Speaker 1: whole lot of hour or two after sunrise, hour and
- 28:43Speaker 1: two before sunset. It is like right there with the sunset,
- 28:48Speaker 1: right there with the sunrise. So a lot of very
- 28:50Speaker 1: short hunts. Sometimes you know, it's not really worth it
- 28:53Speaker 1: to get out there at one in the one in
- 28:54Speaker 1: the afternoon. At the time of year, a lot of
- 28:57Speaker 1: times you can climb up at four thirty five o'clock
- 28:59Speaker 1: hunt for an hour and a half until it gets
- 29:01Speaker 1: dark and um and if you don't see anything in
- 29:03Speaker 1: that time periods come back the next morning, you know.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Going forward then in this next week or so, what
- 29:08Speaker 1: do you think that bucket TVT is going to be
- 29:10Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten in Louisiana, Skeller
- 29:13Speaker 1: one of town. I think it's going to say the
- 29:14Speaker 1: same thing. It's gonna say a four or five. Um.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Just this type of year, this time of year, with
- 29:20Speaker 1: um type of weather patterns and the heat that we have,
- 29:24Speaker 1: it's hard to expect them to get up and move
- 29:27Speaker 1: until another month or two down the road. It's great intel, Kyler,
- 29:31Speaker 1: good luck on your approaching opener, and thanks for joining me.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Appreciate it. Thank you, And that concludes this week's episode
- 29:39Speaker 1: of Wired to Hunt's Radio. Thank you to Dave, Adam, Jake,
- 29:43Speaker 1: and Kyler for joining me, and thank you guys for listening.

- 30:06Speaker 1: to everybody, and stay Wired to Hunt. H
