Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / The DiCecco Daily: Final Injury Check-In, Practice Update Before Eagles Vs. Packers
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on everybody? Welcome into this edition of
- 0:13Speaker 1: The Checko Daily. It's Andrew de Checo here from inside
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Birds dot Com and we've reached the official end
- 0:19Speaker 1: of the Eagles game prep week ahead of Monday night
- 0:23Speaker 1: football against the Green Bay Packers. And we'll get into
- 0:26Speaker 1: the official game statuses and Saturday's injury report in a moment,
- 0:30Speaker 1: but I just want to remind everyone if you hadn't
- 0:32Speaker 1: had a chance yet, I had a sit down for
- 0:35Speaker 1: a to Checho Daily special with former Eagles outside linebacker
- 0:39Speaker 1: Marcus Smith, where we discussed the very heavy and relevant
- 0:43Speaker 1: subject matter of mental health and trying to spread awareness
- 0:48Speaker 1: because it's something that's becoming more and more prevalent, and
- 0:52Speaker 1: of course the devastating news coming out of Dallas really
- 0:56Speaker 1: incited me to use my platform and try to reach
- 1:00Speaker 1: as many people as possible. It's something that's near and
- 1:03Speaker 1: dear to me, and it was a really good conversation.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I thank Marcus for carving out a few minutes to
- 1:08Speaker 1: discuss it with me. It's been a few years since
- 1:11Speaker 1: Marcus and I had a chance to talk. It was
- 1:13Speaker 1: last radio row ahead of Super Bowl fifty seven, where
- 1:16Speaker 1: he sat down with Jeff Mosher and I and I
- 1:20Speaker 1: was blown away with his story. It really resonated with
- 1:22Speaker 1: me and had a big impact and it was good
- 1:25Speaker 1: to reconvene with him and have that conversation. So it's
- 1:30Speaker 1: up on the podcasting platforms for all of you to
- 1:33Speaker 1: check out.
- 1:34Speaker 2: If you haven't already.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I've gotten some really good feedback on that, which is
- 1:37Speaker 1: much appreciated.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Okay, let's transition to the practice report, and there are some.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Interesting I guess out will be Cam Jurgens with the knee,
- 1:52Speaker 1: which is something that should be expected.
- 1:54Speaker 2: He didn't practice at all this week. I did see
- 1:57Speaker 2: Cam in.
- 1:57Speaker 1: The locker room Saturday, if you're listen, and he didn't
- 2:01Speaker 1: appear to have a much of a hitch at all
- 2:03Speaker 1: in his step, which you know, that's for what it's worth.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But we hadn't seen Cam for a while, but I
- 2:09Speaker 1: did see him passing through the locker room.
- 2:12Speaker 2: So there's a little bit of an update there.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Questionable cornerback Shakryan Bennett with the pectoral guard, center Willie
- 2:19Speaker 1: Lampkin with the knee ankle, and outside linebacker Nolan Smith
- 2:22Speaker 1: with the triceps. All three of those players have their
- 2:25Speaker 1: practice window opened and they would need to be activated
- 2:29Speaker 1: to the fifty three man roster in order to be
- 2:30Speaker 1: available Monday night, and for what it's worth, Nolan Smith
- 2:34Speaker 1: said that he expects to play, so we'll see how
- 2:38Speaker 1: that goes. That would be a huge boost, needless to
- 2:40Speaker 1: say to the pass rush group, of course. Brandon Graham
- 2:44Speaker 1: is expected to make his Eagles debut after coming back
- 2:48Speaker 1: from retirement, and Jalen Phillips also making his Eagles debut
- 2:52Speaker 1: after coming over in a Monday morning trade.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Really excited to see what he's able to do because he's.
- 2:59Speaker 1: A player I liked a lot coming out of college,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and he's been healthy now and I wrote a story
- 3:04Speaker 1: about him on Inside the Birds dot com. He's eager
- 3:07Speaker 1: to start the new chapter in his football career and
- 3:10Speaker 1: his life.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So we'll see what that all means Monday night.
- 3:15Speaker 1: But the Saturday practice report DNP center Cam Jurgens with
- 3:20Speaker 1: the knee full go. Running back Saquon Barkley groin, cornerback
- 3:24Speaker 1: Jacoryan Bennett, pectoral, wide receiver AJ Brown, hamstring, tight end
- 3:29Speaker 1: Kylin Grantson abdomen cornerback of Dori Jackson, personal matter concussion guard,
- 3:35Speaker 1: center Willy Lampkin, Nankele defensive tackle Moro Joma with the concussion,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and outside linebacker Nolan Smith triceps. So there is your
- 3:44Speaker 1: updated practice report. And so without Cam Jurgens, that means
- 3:49Speaker 1: that Brett Toath is going to make his second career
- 3:51Speaker 1: start at center. He had a tremendous performance against the
- 3:54Speaker 1: New York Giants and we'll see if he's able to
- 3:56Speaker 1: build off of that. I had a really good conversation
- 3:58Speaker 1: with Brett earlier this week, and again I go back
- 4:03Speaker 1: to the performance that he had when he had the
- 4:06Speaker 1: full compliment of snaps with the first team.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You saw the difference that it.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Made on the field, and this this week was no exception.
- 4:13Speaker 1: He had the full compliment of first team reps. So
- 4:17Speaker 1: that should bode well for him in his second game.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I'm really looking forward to seeing Brett and every you know,
- 4:23Speaker 1: everything that I've that I've gleaned from talking to him.
- 4:26Speaker 1: He just doesn't take any opportunity for granted, and I
- 4:28Speaker 1: get the sense that he's going to seize this moment.
- 4:31Speaker 1: So there is your updated practice update, you know, status report,
- 4:36Speaker 1: if you will.
- 4:37Speaker 2: And I also want to.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Add because there was I had a good conversation with
- 4:43Speaker 1: returner Xavier Gibson. So this is more of me adding
- 4:46Speaker 1: in some notes that I've acquired throughout the week that
- 4:49Speaker 1: didn't make the podcast previously or my stories on Inside
- 4:53Speaker 1: the Birds dot com. But talking to Xavier Gibson because
- 4:57Speaker 1: I was watching the Thursday practice and it was really
- 5:00Speaker 1: windy out there. What not Thursday, I'm sorry, Friday and
- 5:02Speaker 1: it was really windy out there, and so I talked
- 5:06Speaker 1: to him afterwards. Because he was primarily fielding punts, you
- 5:09Speaker 1: can expect him to be the punt returner Monday night.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I think they're going back to him based off of
- 5:14Speaker 1: what we were able to observe in practice, and he
- 5:17Speaker 1: mentioned that it wasn't until late last season where he
- 5:19Speaker 1: was really able to master the trajectory and all the
- 5:23Speaker 1: different facets that have to be taken into account when
- 5:27Speaker 1: you're fielding balls and tracking it with the wind. And
- 5:30Speaker 1: he said that the toughest place to play for him,
- 5:33Speaker 1: he said, December or January playing in Buffalo because of
- 5:39Speaker 1: those conditions and how those winds can swirl. But he
- 5:44Speaker 1: also offered me some an interesting nugget in the sense
- 5:46Speaker 1: that he mentioned how instrumental Leon Washington, who was an
- 5:51Speaker 1: assistant Special Teams coach for the Jets when he was
- 5:55Speaker 1: there from twenty one to twenty twenty three, and he
- 5:59Speaker 1: said he still keeps in contact with him and how
- 6:01Speaker 1: much he's helped him, you know, sort of master and
- 6:04Speaker 1: refine his skill set as a returner. Also noted me
- 6:07Speaker 1: Cole Hardman, who's a wide receiver and he's been someone
- 6:11Speaker 1: who has a pretty established career returning. And he mentioned
- 6:16Speaker 1: quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who he called uncle, and he referred
- 6:20Speaker 1: to him as nephew. But he said that Rogers came
- 6:23Speaker 1: up to him as a rookie and during practice and
- 6:28Speaker 1: you know, he would tell him just to throw some
- 6:30Speaker 1: grass in the air to determine the trajectory of the
- 6:35Speaker 1: wind and all those things. So I thought that that
- 6:37Speaker 1: was kind of interesting to hear from from Xavier.
- 6:41Speaker 2: So we'll see. I mean, he's going to be the
- 6:43Speaker 2: punt returner.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I thought he did some really good things against the
- 6:46Speaker 1: New York Giants and we'll see if there's carryover for
- 6:50Speaker 1: that I have. You know, I'm pretty optimistic about what
- 6:52Speaker 1: he can bring. It's just been down to ball security
- 6:55Speaker 1: with him. He's you know, he's had some ball security
- 6:58Speaker 1: issues in his career, but no one would dispute the
- 7:00Speaker 1: ability that he has in the field and the spatial
- 7:02Speaker 1: awareness as a returner, and I think this is the
- 7:05Speaker 1: right thing for the Eagles to do and give him
- 7:08Speaker 1: that opportunity, you know, because Johan Dotson clearly hasn't had
- 7:13Speaker 1: a lot of experience doing that prior to this season,
- 7:15Speaker 1: and he didn't look necessarily comfortable, at least to my eyes.
- 7:19Speaker 1: So that's the situation there, And if something to keep
- 7:22Speaker 1: an eye on, because it could be windy, it's going
- 7:25Speaker 1: to be very cold there in Green Bay, and there's
- 7:26Speaker 1: certain little, you know, element pieces to take into account
- 7:30Speaker 1: when you're looking at every aspect of the game.
- 7:33Speaker 2: So there's that.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher. And if you have a family
- 7:39Speaker 3: and kids at home, like me, you always want them

- 10:19Speaker 1: It's funny I was talking to Cam Lattu, the Eagles
- 10:23Speaker 1: full back slash tight end special teams beast.
- 10:26Speaker 2: He's really made a big impact there.
- 10:28Speaker 1: But I was telling him, I said, I have a
- 10:30Speaker 1: feeling you're gonna get two tackles in this game because
- 10:32Speaker 1: he's so close every week. And he racked up a
- 10:36Speaker 1: bunch of tackles in short order. And you know, we
- 10:40Speaker 1: kind of talk about that every week. And you know,
- 10:43Speaker 1: he has this book where it's like a Super Mario
- 10:46Speaker 1: Brothers book, you know, like the history of It or
- 10:48Speaker 1: something to that effect. And I saw it sitting in
- 10:50Speaker 1: his locker and I said, what's the story behind that?
- 10:53Speaker 1: He goes, oh, that's you know, I got it from
- 10:55Speaker 1: a comic book store. Me and JD talking about Jordan Davis,
- 10:59Speaker 1: who the two seem to be pretty close by the
- 11:01Speaker 1: way that you know they got that together. And you
- 11:03Speaker 1: know he's a big Super Mario Brothers guy, so and
- 11:06Speaker 1: you never know, you know what kind of conversations are
- 11:09Speaker 1: going to come up. But that's something that I caught,
- 11:11Speaker 1: you know, caught my eye. And Cam and Xavier Gibson
- 11:13Speaker 1: happened to locker next to each other. So I make
- 11:15Speaker 1: it a point at least once a week to catch
- 11:18Speaker 1: up with both guys.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Really enjoy talking to them.
- 11:21Speaker 1: As far as the Green Bay Packers go defensively, I
- 11:24Speaker 1: have another note there that I never really had a
- 11:28Speaker 1: chance to talk about, and the other time was prior
- 11:32Speaker 1: to the twenty twenty four draft. But the Packers have
- 11:35Speaker 1: a pair of safeties and Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams
- 11:38Speaker 1: who I think are particularly good Javon Bullard handling the
- 11:41Speaker 1: nickel role, but on Evan Williams, who I think is
- 11:44Speaker 1: really underrated. He doesn't have the explosive qualities or the
- 11:46Speaker 1: overall athleticism, but he is a player that the Eagles
- 11:49Speaker 1: had a lot of interest in in the draft, and
- 11:51Speaker 1: I was told at the time that they had an
- 11:53Speaker 1: early Day three grade.
- 11:54Speaker 2: He was drafted in the fourth round.
- 11:56Speaker 1: And that's a player that is a movable piece, and
- 12:01Speaker 1: I think he's done a nice job. But the Packers
- 12:03Speaker 1: have a lot of players there, but where I do
- 12:06Speaker 1: believe it, they're going to be vulnerable at the cornerback position.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Keyshawn Nixon is a player who I really like. He's
- 12:12Speaker 1: probably a cornerback two and he's probably gonna be miscast
- 12:16Speaker 1: as a cornerback one. In this game because it doesn't
- 12:19Speaker 1: look like Nate Hobbs. He may or may not play.
- 12:21Speaker 1: He's beatable and so is Carrington Valentine, who if Hobbs
- 12:26Speaker 1: can't go or if he's limited, you're gonna see Valentine
- 12:28Speaker 1: take on the lion's share of the snaps there. So
- 12:30Speaker 1: when you look at the offensive game plan for the
- 12:32Speaker 1: Eagles I do believe that you're going to see them
- 12:35Speaker 1: continue to try and hone in on the running game
- 12:37Speaker 1: that's foundationally what they're looking to accomplish and who they are.
- 12:40Speaker 1: But I also think that there's going to be opportunities
- 12:42Speaker 1: to work the corners there and for aj Brown and
- 12:46Speaker 1: Devonte Smith to be able to take advantage of what
- 12:49Speaker 1: I believe is a favorable matchup.
- 12:51Speaker 2: But that's gonna do it for this edition of A
- 12:53Speaker 2: check Odaily.
- 12:54Speaker 1: This is Andrew Decheco here signing off and I will
- 12:57Speaker 1: catch you on the next one.
