- 0:43Hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who commentary
- 0:46podcast. I have done that a few times.
- 0:48Now, 450 to be precise. Hello, I think the plural is
- 0:54they're Justified. Hey, commentaries podcast, I
- 0:59love to hear it. I know you do however, its feet
- 1:02Lambert. Hello, mr.
- 1:04Joe, how you doing bored? I do that.
- 1:10I get it right, I'll get it. Oh, you know, my friend.
- 1:13Joey, my mother used to call me Josephine this shit.
- 1:17Yeah, we have Ralph calls me or you respectfulness that we
- 1:22deserve a marvelous time. Discussing the empty child.
- 1:27We did a lot. I felt I was being randomly rude
- 1:29about other stories and whenever I do that, I feel bad.
- 1:31Because like, whatever story of just like off, is somebody's
- 1:34favorite Story. Probably lots of people's
- 1:35favorite story and other all going to hate me, but it's all
- 1:38talk to you. I gotta be honest, I really wish
- 1:41after listening to your flight for entirety.
- 1:44Episode of the doctor will be there in the wardrobe.
- 1:47I was like he's holding back. I'm really getting them on hand
- 1:50to a blunt penknife. Talk about this.
- 1:52Oh, yeah. Can we do a conscious anyone to
- 1:54know you've done that already know, I have done it.
- 1:55But, you know, I can do do-overs people don't mind.
- 1:59Okay. Well, we could see see things
- 2:00even worse, like, wedding of River Song or something like
- 2:03that. Okay.
- 2:04Let's do it. I've watched it twice.
- 2:07I remember watching it once and then 10 years later.
- 2:09Going back to watch it twice a second time and hating even
- 2:11more, are you going to self-hate period right now?
- 2:13Because you've already signed up to the twin dilemma?
- 2:16Well, that's the one we've been putting off, which is laying for
- 2:19listeners. If we have, let's get them all
- 2:20off already. But many things are we my life?
- 2:22And one of them is doing well yeah but angry about for giving
- 2:32him such a rough start and the only could have been the doctor
- 2:34for 10 years if you had a better start at it, I think.
- 2:38But anyway, yes, loving So we could announce that we we keep
- 2:41doing other stories and I've done every single country of
- 2:45Season 22. Now apart from the one that you
- 2:48would imagine I would have done first revelation.
- 2:51Yeah, action start.
- 3:04Yeah. Well there's two stories that
- 3:07are the opposite ends of such a diverse Season, the, the coziest
- 3:11and the darkest. I just know, there's someone out
- 3:14there. Listen to this right now,
- 3:15listening to you say terrible, things about the doctor, the
- 3:18Widow and the Wardrobe. But fabulous things about Mark
- 3:21of the Rani and going this man insane.
- 3:24Yes. Here is it?
- 3:25Here is a flowchart which proves that the dot drew it in the
- 3:28water is clever. And heartwarming their children
- 3:32and they makes you cry. This is what children are
- 3:34supposed to do. Massive specs.
- 3:37He's so annoying. And he looks so sorry.
- 3:42No way. Anyway, there are lovely
- 3:44children in this as we've already said.
- 3:46Yes. Because they know the place.
- 3:48It's not all about that. Be done.
- 3:50Did you know, I got as a kid, I remember saying the thing I love
- 3:56about one thing I love my daughter who is not got annoying
- 3:58children in it. So I was horrified, when body
- 3:59language was cast, is another way to make me lose all my
- 4:02friends. But because she was famous for
- 4:06playing annoying spoiled little brat children who it is.
- 4:09Screaming scream all the time, it's Queen pan.
- 4:14So there we go, that happened. Um, you wrote down a few points
- 4:18of discussion. Yes, we started this or what
- 4:21everyone up, come on before starting the episode.
- 4:24Okay, let's go. I have you, this was the first
- 4:28script by Steven Moffat on television I ever saw.
- 4:31I've realized not and I wasn't preemptively avoiding him or
- 4:34anything. I just never I'd never call a
- 4:37press gang or coupling. I just never saw them, did you?
- 4:40Well, I had never seen press gang, but I had seen coupling,
- 4:45and I thought it was the most ghastly sitcom seen in my life.
- 4:49Full of unlikable cat that I go wrong.
- 4:51It was to do is structured very cleverly, like, Moffat always
- 4:56generally does. But, ah, God, this is a
- 5:00character, keep commenting on how clever the scriptures and
- 5:02how, well, written their lines obviously had sex gags all the
- 5:08time. So, I wasn't familiar foes.
- 5:10Oh God, sex gags. You think he'd be custom built
- 5:13for me when I was gonna say? Well, yeah.
- 5:16But it's white noise. Me is too close to home page.
- 5:19Well, no, but there's a really this.
- 5:21Yeah, to you could something can be just generally.
- 5:25Something can be really close to being your thing and does not
- 5:28hit it, quite right and it really sets you on edge will
- 5:31test. You have one, there's me on it
- 5:33example, I do but I can't think of it because it but it's
- 5:36something I'm very familiar with like like music.
- 5:39And there might be a song that if I'd really like some every
- 5:43like some types of sing a song writers who passionately singing
- 5:46about issues in their lives and stuff, but if they do it and if
- 5:49it's just some of them are just not doing it in a way that
- 5:52resonates with me and it's and it sets me on edge and another
- 5:55one that someone else would only sounds slightly different will
- 5:58absolutely like my dashboard. So it's like, it's like that.
- 6:01Nearly something is very nearly right for.
- 6:03You can often be so wrong that it's that is very wrong.
- 6:07So this is what, but I'm with innuendo and stuff like that.
- 6:11I did, if it needs to be playful, I like it when the
- 6:13characters doing, it aren't aware that they're doing it.
- 6:16And that's why there's not much innuendo in the 13th talk to
- 6:18talk to her, but when there is, it's what I find, it really
- 6:21funny because she's oblivious to it, whereas, when the Tenth
- 6:24Doctors just winking, or when the Eleventh Doctor's get waving
- 6:29his Sonic Screwdriver up and down, at Jenny.
- 6:34It is is very old as you because I'll tell you what, I am a
- 6:37massive fan of, are you being served and I Think it's just
- 6:39played madly over the top there. My it's just done brilliantly in
- 6:45a way that the Steven Moffat. Oh God, I want to see a Steven
- 6:51Moffat reboot of. Are you being served so much?
- 6:54Mrs. Slocombe is obviously a Dominatrix and that all the
- 7:00female characters, a dominatrix. Poppin one, who's a simpering
- 7:03idiot? Who's in love with mr.
- 7:04Humphries, oh my God. This is so easy to write itself
- 7:07because I'm good. Did you see the reboot of that?
- 7:11I see, I didn't think it was too terrible, you know?
- 7:13That's the it was like six and a half hour 10 whereas I was
- 7:16expecting it to be an unwatchable but I gave it a look
- 7:18because a couple of the cast of coli and the funny thing about
- 7:21mrs. Slocombe I did really made me
- 7:24laugh the way that we Slocum was still going on about where's my
- 7:26pussy is my place. I like those.
- 7:28The one you the new guy in the office in is like why is she
- 7:32talking about her come? Wonderful sequence where she's
- 7:53talking about when she met her husband and it's during the
- 7:55blitz, so, it's quite relevant to this.
- 7:58She goes. Yes, he there were bombs raining
- 8:01everywhere. He dived on me and went look out
- 8:05here. Comes an incendiary the blitz
- 8:11humor. Liz human was definitely a
- 8:13thing. It's how you play it though.
- 8:15I think it's how you play it. The and how Mollie sugden played
- 8:18it, which was very charmingly. Whereas how Alex Kingston but he
- 8:23needs it. Well, I've still got from them,
- 8:28but I could still remember the stories that I enjoyed River
- 8:31Song it like as library and Well, I really like shouldn't
- 8:38Library. That's me.
- 8:43Forgetting the names of stories and not only that one.
- 8:47Yeah, so I don't going to be back and I'm trying to explain
- 8:53that she actually doesn't annoy me as much as a lot of other
- 8:55things Meredith. I don't think she's that bad,
- 8:57but I know a lot of people can't stand.
- 8:59Anyway, the doctor Tulsa's, the doctor dances will count as
- 9:04income on The doctor starts in. I should do this too in a jazz
- 9:09Tempo, but I'm not going to in 3 2, 1 go.
- 9:14It's a recap. He's talking about sex, right?
- 9:19Yeah. And it's kind of all right, Rock
- 9:22shakes well except it's not it and know I kind of enjoy this is
- 9:29this isn't? This is doing it well, this is
- 9:31teasing you about whether they're going to go there or
- 9:33not, go there and I'll show, you can't do that. 15 years.
- 9:36So you've got to actually decide whether you're going to go there
- 9:38or not. And so, fair enough.
- 9:41What's the inference that the end there?
- 9:42When Jack says car car in and he says, no, you most definitely
- 9:45cannot. Yeah.
- 9:47Well, it's, it's my, are we meant to take this as for the
- 9:50doctor and Rose are shagging or not, but it's but it's
- 9:53ambiguous. So it lets you decide, I'd
- 9:56rather know that kiss they have in the part of the ways is so
- 9:58chased their experience that this point.
- 10:02Yeah, well my feet didn't write that, did he?
- 10:04That's very true? That is Very true.
- 10:06Okay, so we've got quite a long recap here.
- 10:09Yeah. And and together still learning
- 10:11up my and this is sort of this is unusual for a muffin story.
- 10:14That it was a two-parter that it is a 90-minute long story that
- 10:18stops in the middle, whereas most of us to part has a story
- 10:22and then another story that's really sort of a sequel to it or
- 10:25a prequel to it or whatever. You know, I know is me about
- 10:28Recaps and it annoys me especially in Star Trek.
- 10:30Episode two bars, what's that? Well, they obviously telling you
- 10:34all the pertinent information, And that you need for.
- 10:38So they're pointing out all the important parts of part 1 rather
- 10:40than it. Just all being slaughtered in
- 10:42and it's all part of the experience.
- 10:44Okay. These are the things that are
- 10:45important. These are the things that will
- 10:46explain the conclusion. This is what you need to know.
- 10:49Yeah. But it's from that I get, I mean
- 10:51he goes but that's such a good resolution.
- 10:53It's supposed to go to saying, go to your room, never thought
- 10:56of it. That is, what did I what later
- 11:00on? He does.
- 11:01This thing does anyway, he doesn't resolve a cliffhanger,
- 11:04he just the plot just goes off. Off somewhere else.
- 11:06We go somewhere completely different.
- 11:08We will resolve it later. Yeah.
- 11:09Well and there's an episode of Sherlock which is the worst.
- 11:12Ever example of that, welcome back, don't get me started on.
- 11:18People don't show up Podcast and I'll come on in screen which
- 11:21family do you know what right has been having terrible last
- 11:26word but he's just laughing again.
- 11:30He's a God, I'm forgetting how good he is.
- 11:32And yeah, we talked about how sexy years we have fun with but
- 11:34I didn't actually put forth. He's the only doctor that I've
- 11:37ever considered to be sexy. Christopher Eccleston.
- 11:40Oh really. Yeah, thank you for your
- 11:42faithful. Joe surprised by this
- 11:44information brooding and handsome.
- 11:47And I'm not surprised by the fact.
- 11:49He fact, listen at it's, the blend is that he can flip from
- 11:52being angry and serious to them being playful and innocent.
- 11:57Yeah, so Matt Smith, don't lie. And a lot of people say, Davis,
- 11:59henan, Yeah, that not my bag until you have a type to you,
- 12:05pay you have time. Not in terms of look like
- 12:08yesterday, although I don't know specific but he's not it because
- 12:13wrexham is not my type. But he's just, he's got, he's
- 12:18got something and it's yeah, masculine.
- 12:21And also sort of we can be boyish as well.
- 12:24It can. Yeah, well, I think as well in
- 12:26the second half of the Season, he's mastered the comedy.
- 12:29I think there's a few Moments. And I think it's mostly down to
- 12:32Direction by Keith Baroque in some of those areas where, as
- 12:35now, he knows how to be, just very naturally sake and funny.
- 12:42And he was always going to do the drama well because he's a
- 12:45dramatic act. Oh, really?
- 12:47Yeah. Lord hockey season is there's a
- 12:51lot. So now we're having a nice long
- 12:53talk. Yeah.
- 12:53But that but then, I mean this we're how many minutes including
- 12:56the recap where it was three and a half minutes in, and it's been
- 12:58three and a half minutes of action action.
- 13:00Action passion. Oh my God, let music music
- 13:02music. And so nowadays, it's bullshit
- 13:04that people won't pay attention to Long dialogue scenes.
- 13:07There's a 20-minute dialogue scene at midnight and it's
- 13:10fucking gripping. Yeah, I'll get the best.
- 13:13That's my favorite. New series episode ever easy.
- 13:20Immediately after that turn left again the right order is turn my
- 13:25facts isn't. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:27Love that took. Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:28Took my gonna hear it. That talk about going out with a
- 13:30bang Russell T Davies. Yeah.
- 13:37They keep talking about that was on his list of episodes to do,
- 13:44and he finally got around to in season 4.
- 13:46Not that this isn't a rusty, Davis Kryptonite, but I wonder
- 13:49if the notion was floating around the writers room.
- 13:50I love those 1940s lamps, and they put 1940s light switches,
- 13:54which are the type that I had fitted to at my house because I
- 13:58love my love 20s to 40s design for houses.
- 14:02Well, that was quick. Sorry.
- 14:04No, I was distracted. I really liked that bit where
- 14:10the kid takes the mask off and you think.
- 14:12Oh yeah, yeah, child I'll hang on.
- 14:16There's a sequence in a minute. Now, isn't there about this
- 14:18fella? Who's been having it off with
- 14:20the butcher or something? Yeah, I could.
- 14:23Yeah, yeah. That's right.
- 14:25But it does but I can remember a homosexual reference.
- 14:28I'm not Yeah. This is one of this.
- 14:34Yeah, yeah, because it's amazing that this is this is 2005.
- 14:39We've had, when did the age of consent was only equal at
- 14:43finally equalised in? Was that funny because early
- 14:482000s? It was Labor government.
- 14:49That did it was no civil Partnerships.
- 14:51Don't just come in around about this on.
- 14:54Yeah, and yeah, and people were still being dismissed from the
- 14:59Army for being gay until 2000. It's like, It's so easy to take
- 15:03this for granted. Yeah.
- 15:06Well, if I'll go by, obviously that has on the commentary, goes
- 15:10this weird Rusty, Davis is rhyme dog to, but the second I turned
- 15:13up. It will get very gay, he's not
- 15:16wrong. And I'm not, I don't disapprove
- 15:20that I took, I think people should right outside your
- 15:22comfort zone. You should write it, write the
- 15:24emotions and feelings that, you know, ugly.
- 15:25But you can know how somebody feels who hasn't even if you
- 15:29haven't walked in their shoes, when I really like it, when we
- 15:31get to a point where, you know, Jax Jax a bit obvious and in
- 15:34your face and a bit sick, call me.
- 15:36But I really like it when you get somebody like bill or
- 15:39something like yes and it's done quite sort of subtly, or subtly
- 15:43is more fit and ship nor gate. She was much better at it than
- 15:48locks it in my opinion, when I realized how he got it, is that
- 15:56bit in the Tardis with on top of the tallest in Paradox, when
- 15:58they don't kiss and I thought that was a nice mature
- 16:02conversation between two people that clearly loved each other
- 16:05but know that, they can't really go there.
- 16:08I like that a lot. Yeah, it was like, it was nice.
- 16:10It was well written, and I wanted her to go back.
- 16:12I wanted the doctor. And that I think that was
- 16:15handled so much better than the rest of the Martha situation,
- 16:19which was, but that was wrung out of it for more melodrama to
- 16:22be more to. We've got that, are you my
- 16:27mummy? Are you my mummy going around on
- 16:29the tape? Oh, this bit here.
- 16:31This is extremely well. The bit in a minute where it
- 16:36goes, the tapes run out and he's still talking and you suddenly
- 16:40realize the key design together, discussing what it is.
- 16:43Oh God. I just said those words.
- 16:45There we go. Yes.
- 16:56You don't sound sure. No.
- 16:58I'm just trying to let you know. I'd yeah.
- 16:59I liked it a lot. Like I don't think it was my
- 17:01favorite episode back. Yeah, well I'm trying because
- 17:05the because the, because it, but it was that was the year with
- 17:09family of blood and that was my favorite by Marley Human Nature.
- 17:14An awful lot of food. Mr. Lloyd, but he does, he does,
- 17:18do those jobs gets very well. I still think the best one ever
- 17:21is you're not looking at the Statue near EU that is still the
- 17:24best one he ever did. Yes.
- 17:26Yes. Yes, you know, I don't know.
- 17:29I was threatened about it. I did not blink.
- 17:31Links billion. Absolutely.
- 17:34Oh. I love the solace in librarian
- 17:36for us the dead M. Oh, well if you say so should
- 17:41you just do so right? So lovely.
- 17:42Nancy. Just blackmailing this gay
- 17:44character. Basically, I like he'll be shot
- 17:47if, if she out sim. So yeah, maybe she's not quite
- 17:51so, but I just think the inference is a bit gross that he
- 17:54gets a big bit of beef for his big bit of beef, you know, it's
- 18:00Strange. Yeah.
- 18:01Hast strangely Parts. I don't know why I turn that
- 18:04into more words and actually was choosing my words, carefully, I
- 18:07mean, but yeah, I don't care. I don't really care, like, I'm
- 18:11not offended that we've got a character whose seem to be gay
- 18:14and he's just there for seem to be villainous.
- 18:16If anything do it a bit more, there's is it was for us to see.
- 18:19Davis is things is it we're all of this Century Falls.
- 18:23Might be one of his other ones where there's all these
- 18:27characters who kind at all sort of evil.
- 18:29He's basically always seemed a bit queer in every sense and,
- 18:36and it's kind of like as they're the most fun characters to be.
- 18:38It's so obvious that that's why he's doing that.
- 18:41I pop it into a Star Trek, parallel universe and sewed.
- 18:45Yes. Oh my God.
- 18:50That moment is really good. The doctor is, do you remember?
- 18:56Yeah, I know but it's just but the doctor moment What a really
- 19:00good thing to land in Doctor, Who is a moment where the doctor
- 19:04realizes something. And he can either realize it,
- 19:07that banana joke, he can either realize it ahead of you or a
- 19:11moment behind you or whatever and it's like the best.
- 19:14One of all is the horror of fang Rock.
- 19:16I've locked in Lila with us. Yeah but this was an of that
- 19:21ilk, not not such a huge moment but done just as well.
- 19:25It's the it's a trap moment, isn't it?
- 19:28When you realize And he's yeah, the doctor realises 37 us but
- 19:33not to realize is before everyone else.
- 19:35I think the squareness got is a very cool idea because it means
- 19:38you can just cut squares out of cells.
- 19:42Nothing will ever top are now going off-piste?
- 19:44Again, the Christmas tree silhouette that cuts through in
- 19:47doing some of the invasion. Now that are trying to make a
- 19:54point to times and now I forgot what the point.
- 19:56Sorry was like that's right. Oh that was it.
- 20:01I've got it. Do you remember the Narrows
- 20:03narrows it down seen in World War 3 when they're he's trying
- 20:07to figure out where this Lavina from Uniqlo.
- 20:09Yeah. There's it down and Italy and he
- 20:12figures it out in a quick succession of dialogue.
- 20:15Well, you just had a similar scene there a minute ago between
- 20:17rows and the doctor. Yes, but it's done with less or
- 20:22Frenetic energy. Yeah, and it's more sort of
- 20:26intellectually piecing together all the narrative pieces.
- 20:29Yeah. It's a very nice picture, right?
- 20:31It's sort of part 3 Exposition, but it started and some of the
- 20:36less good moments and some of the chimney which I am no Basher
- 20:40of in general. But our where the doctor is is
- 20:43given frantic stuff like that to go through and it doesn't
- 20:45actually really hang together. She's just saying stuff very
- 20:48quickly and then at the end she goes on.
- 20:49So that is that and it hasn't taken hasn't really taken.
- 20:53With it, when it's being when someone a moment that has been
- 20:55done really well, they'll bounce you along and you're just about
- 20:58keeping up with it. I mean I'm going to say this.
- 21:03Yeah, I mean eat you know he clearly needs a wag before he
- 21:07starts right in and he is smart as houses but he is a smaller
- 21:11rather than chicken'll. I don't like that kind of
- 21:15comparison. Okay.
- 21:18Well, I'll say I saw the cows. Come on.
- 21:21He's got massive strength. Yeah.
- 21:32Right now so okay. Now they've so they shot that
- 21:34the square hole in floor, the wolf Orleans, wood floor and
- 21:37Captain Jack has vanished Also they have a bit of a long scene
- 21:42in a minute about where he goes all you just assumed that I've
- 21:44never danced. Well yes doctor we've had very
- 21:50little evidence of being in the last 40 years.
- 21:57But I don't want him to be Captain Kirk Even Flow if
- 22:01anybody in the nearest use in Kinder.
- 22:05Yes, but I got to see anything when two people are just getting
- 22:10on well and sparking together. And my room is value and me,
- 22:14honest, well which one of your naris give you a choice you'll
- 22:29definitely on top. A as for sure I'll be a drink in
- 22:32the TSS machine. It was very handsome, these
- 22:38days. Yes, some folks.
- 22:43Okay, so we got the kids back now, for a random scene where
- 22:46she just gets rid of them. Again, there's this padding.
- 22:51Are we spending our plates a little bit?
- 22:53Oh, no. Because because there's nothing
- 22:55about they had trouble with the timings of this episode's
- 22:57decision that all don't do season season, although two
- 22:59seasons did that's ironic actually season 26, had endless
- 23:02timing problems, didn't and 25. And for the, for the, for this
- 23:06being the next series after both of them to also have them you
- 23:10know, infamously this slaw. So the two-part story in the
- 23:14latter half of the Season most seasons gets the lowest viewers
- 23:20and the second episode gets usually gets the lowest viewers
- 23:24of this the season. So good because well, one I
- 23:29think is you hear, you've had the beginning and the excitement
- 23:31of the show coming down, it's you haven't quite got to the end
- 23:34where you're building us this, massive conclusion ever sort of
- 23:38used to Doctor Who being on and then it's a two-part.
- 23:40I've so it's not something fresh the next week either.
- 23:43Yeah, you know what's annoying about that, empty, child,
- 23:48doctor, dances Impossible, Planet, Satan God, yell human
- 23:53nature, family of love, these are all the best episodes of the
- 23:56sea. See ya.
- 23:57Well, this is going by itself, guess what?
- 24:01It's being typed. Yeah, there is an explanation
- 24:04for this. I just cannot recall what it is.
- 24:09Well. Cumberland.
- 24:12You told me you were going to fax at your fingertips.
- 24:14Come on. Sorry, I'll Google you turn.
- 24:16Yeah, I'm Googling ratings fulfilling Joe, I'm Googling.
- 24:19Right is pumped, as won't. Notice how?
- 24:21Okay. Oh, yeah.
- 24:23Rose got 10, .81. Then drop them down to 8.
- 24:27Then we run back up to nine. Hovering around seven point.
- 24:29Something 8 point something. Of course we got Dalek coming on
- 24:32a, Dalek spinning gone. Oh yeah. 6.86 lowest rated
- 24:39episode of the year. What this one?
- 24:41Yeah. Oh no.
- 24:42Sorry, I'm bad. Wolf was a bit lower.
- 24:45So, but they've got basically, it's bubbling along between
- 24:48eight and seven, the hyper just under seven.
- 24:51I've got a feeling because it was the way it would all be one
- 24:54Powers rather than two cars. Yeah.
- 24:57But I don't think, I think he just kept you coming up so much
- 25:00better story, telling them to partners with the time, right?
- 25:04I just thought it looked like there's a certain frese on about
- 25:06the first night thing, isn't it? Well yeah but I think that's
- 25:10more of a thing. When you've got full Partners
- 25:13before discussing I was discussing with someone on
- 25:15Twitter and I don't know. I have the budgets worked in
- 25:17those last in those McCoy Series where they spent so much money a
- 25:21lot on remembrance of the Daleks.
- 25:22I wonder if remembrance got, like, half the budget that year
- 25:25because like greater show is shot in a car park.
- 25:28Happiness, Patrol is just entirely in a small studio with
- 25:31not much happens. Feels good The cheapest stories
- 25:35to have made just because there's not, you know, it's all
- 25:38Studio band and Battlefield. Sorry.
- 25:44I'm jumping about seasons on it. No, no.
- 25:46Anyway, sorry, it took about the wrong season but just budgeting
- 25:49anyway, there, you know, funny old world.
- 25:52I wonder they budget in this season.
- 25:54Like where, where do you put the money?
- 25:57I reckon they put the money into Dalek.
- 26:00Apple, The Parting of the ways. Oh, sorry to interrupt.
- 26:04But I but we just got a tiny little bit of what sounded like
- 26:07the theme from secret army. As she's she's cutting through
- 26:10Nancy's, cutting through the barbed wire to get at a point to
- 26:14recognize that at the time. Now she's currently the barbed
- 26:16wire to get into the same and and the music goes did it.
- 26:21And it's like, that was a bit of the secret anything.
- 26:24And now he's not above, you know, putting his theme Tunes, I
- 26:27don't know. You recall Steptoe and Son in.
- 26:28As I remember, I certainly Dude, that's lonely.
- 26:33And the fact is, you're my room Greiner as well is just
- 26:35delicious in this dialog here. When I was first watching this
- 26:40and I roll over doctor, I don't want Rose in the doctor to be
- 26:43acting like a weird couple that look like you just assume I
- 26:48don't dance. So I really hate in Father's Day
- 26:52where they have that bit at that spot in the flat and she's like,
- 26:55oh, go off and go back to the Tardis to be rubbish from
- 26:58Berkeley. And I'm like, am I watching
- 27:00this? And has gotten nothing because
- 27:02apart from that because I really loved Father's Day and I
- 27:05forgotten that thing slightly annoyed me as well.
- 27:07But Father's Day is Like an episode of Buffy.
- 27:08To me, it's just got us a vibe to it.
- 27:11Okay? Now Moonlight Serenade is
- 27:13playing. This is this is my mom and dad
- 27:17kind of music. My kids are the 40s.
- 27:20Okay, this fat is great shorthand for the era, isn't it?
- 27:23Yeah, one time there's a pad big power cut in Leicester across
- 27:26the whole of leicestershire and at everything was off, but I had
- 27:29a battery-powered radio. Now to put it on listening to
- 27:32radio BBC Radio, Leicester still had power and they were playing
- 27:35this time playing 1940s music and were.
- 27:38And the DJ was saying, yes, we do.
- 27:40Not many of you can hear us but a few of you can.
- 27:42So we're still broadcasting by better solve end-of-the-world
- 27:45kind of scenario, you know. And and he put He had the flags
- 27:48normal Museum, then you put this on it and it's like a lot of
- 27:51people saying it reminds him of the blitz because this is in
- 27:53like nineteen eighty. When God lots of people could
- 27:57still remember, it was very strange in it, because it's an
- 27:59era. You know, where lots of people
- 28:02dies and yet, there is a bizarre romance about it, isn't there?
- 28:06Yeah, sort of camaraderie that people had in under that.
- 28:09Well, and that was the thing. That was one of the things was
- 28:11going to mention. Yeah, but watching this now,
- 28:13after our generation has had lockdowns, I wondered whether it
- 28:16would feel any different, but it doesn't really to me, but, like,
- 28:21you know, survivors will never be the same.
- 28:24Anyone who really watches that now?
- 28:25You've got a but you know, the world didn't end.
- 28:28It's weird how these things get people, people just sort of
- 28:31compartmentalize it and want to go back with most things.
- 28:34People want to go back to normal life as soon as possible.
- 28:37But with the blitz we don't, we do that's become a massive part
- 28:40of our folklore. Which people will love that sort
- 28:45of reading watching listening and love this area.
- 28:49Yeah. And it's an interesting I mean
- 28:51like the UK seems to be far more still invested in the second
- 28:55world war than a lot of other countries that were even more
- 28:59affected by. I don't think the French or the
- 29:01belgians spent as much time talking about World War Two as
- 29:04we do after, when you consider that, they were conquered.
- 29:08And then I Define and then freedoms, get freed and
- 29:11everything. Well, I think I feel Like I feel
- 29:13like this is where sort of, in terms of the character of the
- 29:16British people sort of peak, isn't it?
- 29:19You know where we could be most proud that we stood up to
- 29:22people? And what this the dialogues in
- 29:24here, a mouse in front of a lion, you know, I don't know
- 29:28what you do to adults Hitler, but you scare the hell out of me
- 29:31and what he says. We have none students Nazis.
- 29:36Now that's, he's nasty creeping around the Oh no, this is all
- 29:44bull coupling for toppling. The scene in the minute we're
- 29:48algae. Where she's chained him, isn't
- 29:51she? She's handcuffed to him and he's
- 29:54transforming that I had my briefings suspense sequence.
- 29:58Yeah. Oh, that's got two years is
- 30:02memories missing. Gosh, that's gonna be exciting
- 30:04to find out what happened with them.
- 30:05Steven Moffat another day? Never do.
- 30:09It is a little awkward, right? That is it, it is only do it,
- 30:14but they don't tell you, but it eluded to the time for
- 30:27everything of just not tying things up.
- 30:29That's nothing new. My feet.
- 30:31Just does it well having characters stand on stage and
- 30:33tell the audience, how clever the writer is that?
- 30:36You know what, right? If it came to a choice between,
- 30:38not tie things up at all, or having that sequence in Time of
- 30:42the Doctor where, all the plot points of season six are tied up
- 30:45in this noisy. I would like watching now, all
- 31:03Jenkins. Without a Jenkins before boy.
- 31:09What should I do? I don't know what are the cat.
- 31:11Yes, no, no. There's a Jenkins in curse of
- 31:14fenric, one of the soldiers. Yeah, that's it.
- 31:16Yeah, I always want to smashes all the chess sets.
- 31:19That's what I was going to ask you was was the Second World War
- 31:23Two closed, when Doctor Who was made because we didn't really
- 31:26get there until curse of fenric. Yeah, that's right.
- 31:29And then and the the drafted, a stroke those are trout and story
- 31:32that have thought about doing it.
- 31:33And they just decided not to because it was just too too
- 31:36close to home. There's too many people who had
- 31:37people who were killed, family members.
- 31:39Killed in it and they just didn't want to didn't want
- 31:42people to have to think about that while they're watching
- 31:43telly which is strange because of video then go.
- 31:45It's not like we talked we doing that.
- 31:47Dad's Army are doing that but then he doesn't know.
- 31:49People are getting killed in Dad's Army, dog, choose an
- 31:51adventure series. Someone's going to have to die.
- 31:53It's got to be life and death struggles in Doctor Who, which
- 31:55don't have in a sitcom. Although, what would you do?
- 31:57Have an adult. But if you do have an adult
- 31:59drama, but I guess they're just talk as Doctor.
- 32:01Who's the kids that I know, I said, even that doesn't really
- 32:04add up because this kids are serious about the second world
- 32:07war. Yeah, You know, the only way
- 32:11he's going, he's doing the meeting who looks, doesn't he
- 32:14like a Tory know, offensively? I can't stand it when people say
- 32:21things like what I've just said but there you go.
- 32:25I he just looked really like sort of if Michael Gove and
- 32:28Michael Portillo had a love child literally my gas masks on
- 32:32and then his head. Yeah although we cut away
- 32:34slightly before be CGI. Goes too expensive or do we get?
- 32:37No. Do we go back to it?
- 32:39See where as I love this bit where Jack says, oh I'm going to
- 32:43go and flirt with the guard and it's a guy.
- 32:45I thought I had this is nice. I like it.
- 32:47It's it is. I mean it's very it's a good way
- 32:49to get shot if it's actually 1941 but I think I think it's
- 32:54funnier in the doctor's daughter.
- 32:55Went on a tries it though and they're all like no, no.
- 32:57Like my womanly wiles. Also it So many species Peak so
- 33:09that small fits all can, therefore yeah, we seek out new
- 33:12life and new Star Trek quote, isn't it?
- 33:14Yeah, seek out new life. I've got about that.
- 33:17But yeah, at this point, it's the first time he's done it all.
- 33:19It's all quite fun. I don't know.
- 33:21Only knows him knows me. It's not all right?
- 33:23Yeah. He's pinching his bottom in the
- 33:25first one? Yeah.
- 33:29I'm going to get mummy last time as you think that's probably
- 33:32Jack's best look. You know this sport is look
- 33:35yeah. He's worse.
- 33:39Look, I know that's good. We get to see a little bit of
- 33:41reaction because it's good. I like it.
- 33:42When Barrowman does actually get to do some some acting, you
- 33:45know, to look to be worried or concerned or you know, rather
- 33:50than just always being and Cactus Jack is like, that's his
- 33:55default setting isn't it? Yeah, except for, its not.
- 33:59So it's good that they don't entirely pigeonhole him in that
- 34:01otherwise to get boring very quickly.
- 34:02But there's nothing about his people have commented on how
- 34:05differently isn't Torchwood to her even doctor.
- 34:07Who do? I talk to us.
- 34:08The version of Jackfruit me and torture series one is like a
- 34:11computer this brooding almost knife dr.
- 34:14Ish person. Compared to in this when I use
- 34:16almost is this cocky flirty almost 10th dr.
- 34:20Ish person. Not what is weird?
- 34:21He bounces between the two because depending on what they
- 34:24want him to do in the script, he's either perky and fun or
- 34:27blending and miserable. But do you have done all?
- 34:31We all will Cho, aren't we? All I'm just perky know.
- 34:37I could be very wrong. Really, I could suggest a few
- 34:39episodes that would make you Broody and mr.
- 34:41Trimble, let's get forward five seasons.
- 34:49Did you watch any Torchwood? Yeah, yeah.
- 34:53I was, I just watched it. I thought was sometimes it was
- 34:55was my good. Sometimes it was quite good.
- 34:58I quite liked even miles. A bit a bit.
- 35:01Then, you know, what this scene in a second.
- 35:04I would maybe just past the bit where she says to Nancy is going
- 35:08to be. Alright, like, yeah, I really
- 35:10like that bad. Yeah.
- 35:11Me too, that managed to melt my icy?
- 35:15Heart icy heart. You ain't that bad?
- 35:21No. But I do I've ever heard of that
- 35:22drama has to really hit the nail on the head and not over a get
- 35:26for me to be get emotional with it.
- 35:29This is like proper classic. So now did you say that?
- 35:31That camera? When zooming down there towards
- 35:33the child? All the zombies are getting up
- 35:36there. All going to come out into the
- 35:37dark now I love all of this stuff when when they come
- 35:42through the gates and there's like a crane shot over the
- 35:45hospital, them all coming out and it's still quite a while to
- 35:49go. We're still got 20 minutes,
- 35:51well, with 2000, 26 minutes in like and in later stories, this
- 35:56kind of thing would be happening right at the end of an episode.
- 35:59And you know, that there was going to be a sudden button that
- 36:01they could just press to undo it all.
- 36:03But at this point, Anything that's really nice.
- 36:07So I think the character twist the fact that is a character
- 36:12ending rather than a ploy ending.
- 36:14I have that on. This is nice.
- 36:16Yeah, this is when you talk about the same between the rows
- 36:18and Nancy Yeah, and Roses just so noisy.
- 36:23I feel like rose gets her best moment when she interacts with a
- 36:26guest character a bit. Like Gwyneth in the unquiet.
- 36:30Dave's. Yes I have a long sequence in
- 36:32sort of the scullery, don't they?
- 36:35Yeah. And they talked about and and
- 36:37they're not on Rose isn't well, there's a little bit she's
- 36:39almost as possible. So character called the made
- 36:43character course when affect you you said it's a witness points
- 36:49out to Rose that. She's kind of been really
- 36:50Patrick. Sizing and Road realizes it and
- 36:52like that. Yeah, it's so well written.
- 36:54And they're both come across as really good.
- 36:56Character really well created characters and like the the very
- 36:59quick scene with the technician in the end of the world, the
- 37:04blue woman, I realize that that was a padding scene, wasn't it?
- 37:08That they've said that was written because it was run by
- 37:10facings. It's such a good moment and it
- 37:11really makes makes a character more interesting.
- 37:13But but you're right and an emphasis on her character and
- 37:17series to like she has a scene with Renee.
- 37:20The go in the fireplace and you can see she's barely holding
- 37:23them back from chlorine her face off.
- 37:26Well, they're talking. Yeah, and I mean, that was very
- 37:28simple. Just what character are you
- 37:30doing? All this shit would make some
- 37:31would go to somebody's head and make them really arrogant.
- 37:37But yeah, that was the same with.
- 37:38So we just had the, we win. Seen.
- 37:42Here we go Nana jeans, he's already sad. and you see the
- 37:51graves of people who just died of old age, whatever during the
- 37:53war and it's like, they never found out that we want but I'm
- 37:56thinking that when I was a kid, so sad, they must have died
- 38:00thinking that, you know, the world might end up being taken
- 38:03over by fascists and that scene, they're always reminds me of
- 38:07being a thinking that when I was a kid Can I take that down to a
- 38:12personal and very selfish level? I have a fear one day not of
- 38:18dying thinking that you know we didn't win a war somewhere like
- 38:21that. I have a fear of dying and
- 38:23they'll be another Doctor Who episode out after I died that I
- 38:25won't see such I did just what that's what pretty much tell
- 38:29you. It's just last lines were and I
- 38:32don't know what can find out. What happens next.
- 38:37I will see. Could be fantastic.
- 38:44Exodus and really dumb. This is so good because
- 38:46Eccleston has got a see selling this.
- 38:48This other every single person in the world could be killed by
- 38:51this and it's your fault Jack. I think you're right.
- 38:54He's got tears in his eyes. Mmm, but he is doing it.
- 39:00When did you get in Star Trek, where Shatner will be going, you
- 39:03know, and really frustrating to the audience and it would be
- 39:06gathered the agonizing, where as he stood with this, Absolute
- 39:10intensity. He believes everything he's
- 39:13saying. Yeah, and sometimes and his
- 39:16fight is finding it and sometimes you ever does happen
- 39:18sometimes. But not, not here, like this is
- 39:21just perfect. He's just, he's just you major
- 39:26in the first episode about how that comes in.
- 39:32Now, it's really gentle. And yeah, and this music Still
- 39:36dismiss, it has to crescendos. Is there are those that those
- 39:38the moment earlier when they were all Chased around.
- 39:41It was really going for it but and also Marriott has not yet
- 39:44started doing the this B funny music.
- 39:46And that's what I hate most want anything at all my, for my ears
- 39:49off whenever that starts up. And it's this thing that sorry
- 39:53I'm thinking. Well, I've only drinking green
- 39:55tea, I don't know, I'm spilling it but I have the worst example
- 39:58of that and yeah it's bit quirky.
- 40:00Did you do there's Widow in the wardrobe with the chairs or
- 40:04start whizzing about which is our last could enjoy that
- 40:07moment. That the music just hammers it
- 40:10home. Why are you laughing?
- 40:11It's funny laughs. He walks into the tree
- 40:15backwards. Remember no space suits on
- 40:19backwards and he walked straight into a spacesuit.
- 40:21Yeah it sort of goes seem subtle hang on though.
- 40:33You and me watch the stones of blood and there's that the dirt
- 40:40The me a flesh wound. Musically, speaking of magic
- 40:43would say, let's watch, I watch them.
- 40:46I wish the presentation the other day and I remember I
- 40:48remember laughing when I was seven at that point where I do
- 40:51it's been good and you guys, it's Billy a flesh wound, flesh
- 40:55wound. What is that?
- 40:57He's such a sweet and it's sorry.
- 41:00Anyway, there are such bombs are exploding is the climax of the
- 41:02episode but never comes back online.
- 41:06But this is being done. Another, one of my Star Trek
- 41:09than us. Another one.
- 41:10The volcano day things getting brought up again, unless I start
- 41:14I think that you're probably tell me, it's completely untrue
- 41:16that we. Having said that, they had
- 41:17animals all the time in that generation, it turns out it was
- 41:21only once. Is that, right?
- 41:22The other thing that I spent my teenage years thinking is
- 41:25particularly in Voyager. Maybe was in my twenties by then
- 41:28but there are so many voyages, dramatic moments there.
- 41:29Just everyone standing around. Desks shouting percentages at
- 41:32each other and it's like the children 27%.
- 41:36Oh yeah. That is literally every single
- 41:41website. Okay, every single one and she
- 41:44gets to say debris a lot. Hey yes.
- 41:47How moving is this? How moving is this woman before?
- 41:51Oh yeah. Sorry she's acting a socks off
- 41:53and we talked about this, I don't expect this, this was more
- 41:56shocked me about this first season, Father's Day of Service
- 41:58like this where there was this high level of emotion and I
- 42:03would have thought if you do put injected Listen to dr.
- 42:05Who it'll be pretty agonizing and it's not it's judged.
- 42:10Really well. Yeah, yeah.
- 42:15Oh and the simple. The resolution is her just
- 42:17saying yeah I am your mommy. Yeah.
- 42:23Okay. So do you like the everybody
- 42:25live sending get a sort of just this once everybody lives the
- 42:31fall line and I liked it until the next time we do it.
- 42:36Yeah. And it's so and it's educational
- 42:40because like it's going to leave kissing or why did she have to
- 42:42not tell? Why was she allowed to say that
- 42:44she's his mummy? Yeah, I guess that doesn't.
- 42:48None of us are a little bit of a magic glow of pixie dust.
- 42:53Don't forget about the welfare state.
- 42:55Is that as I've just coming up and we just missed it and I
- 42:59said, yeah, yeah. Oh no.
- 43:03You know what? The funniest bit Estonia or mr.
- 43:06Constantine. What?
- 43:09I went into the house and he goes, is it possible you
- 43:16miscounted? That's a great line.
- 43:24Yeah, Agustin plays this brilliantly as well as his give
- 43:26me a like this. Yeah.
- 43:33Have you heard this before this before?
- 43:35This music is so good. I haven't let you know.
- 43:38He's brilliant. Terrific.
- 43:45Oh everyone's smiling, I'm smiling.
- 43:47I'm happy Murray. Gold is beca doing lovely music.
- 43:50He's swelling right in the world.
- 43:52A mother and son are reunited. Yes.
- 43:56John peromyscus appear with a huge bond between his Lakes.
- 44:00Okay. So still got six minutes to go.
- 44:02Yeah. I think this is very cool
- 44:06because I've established that the ship can do this.
- 44:08They've established that the bombs are going to drop.
- 44:10And that's such a nice shot with a big hospital up in the dark,
- 44:13in the background. That's a less nice shot of being
- 44:15on top of that bomb, though. Well, it's quite as good though,
- 44:17it's quite funny, dr. Strangelove is that paint is the
- 44:22campus thing in the whole story. You can do Baron read that
- 44:28script guide. Of course, I got a bond between
- 44:30my legs, you know? Sorry, I'm going on Shaky
- 44:34Ground. How long is it before?
- 44:36We see it for Jack comes back. It's not until Utopia.
- 44:43No, yeah, I'll say he dies at the end of partner ways, gets
- 44:50brought back then, he has tortured series one.
- 44:52Oh no, sorry. Yeah, that's what I'm meaning.
- 44:55I'm meaning how long it is a parting of the ways, the next or
- 44:57bad water. The next time he's in it.
- 44:59It is, isn't it? Yeah, Boom Town.
- 45:02Of course, I've gotta tell ya. I need to re-watch.
- 45:05I need to do a seasonal. Now, this fit with the dr.
- 45:08Sprinkles of pit fairy dust over the wall.
- 45:11Yeah, everybody lives Rose. Just this once.
- 45:16Are you okay with that? I'm okay with that.
- 45:18I am. Ya know, you got double
- 45:20standards met after ripping into the denser the TV movie.
- 45:25Yeah, but no because it's only because he's got these nanites
- 45:28that's true. Why doesn't he just take
- 45:29somebody's pocket? And oh, God, he could just take
- 45:31them to every planet has ever been to.
- 45:33Now, I'm Joan, you've ruined are just taking some of these bloody
- 45:37nose with him, you know, Joe just wished.
- 45:40You Wilson. Come on, Oh, I'm glad to have to
- 45:47consistently. Do you just excited that the leg
- 45:49lines coming up now? Love it.
- 45:52Constant time. She's right.
- 45:59Well, you know, you may have got a bit of a thing about Dotty old
- 46:02women in doctorate we have. Oh yeah.
- 46:04Oh yeah, she's fine. But it would be better if
- 46:06they've got the most haman's player, it's over.
- 46:09That one, the word. This is too young to be a
- 46:12playwright mother. There we go.
- 46:20As long as soon as all these actors are cleared out of the
- 46:22way. Oh, that's right.
- 46:23Cause the bulb has to go off, doesn't it because history
- 46:26because they knew for a fact that it did.
- 46:28Yeah. Do you know there's a father
- 46:30hasn't been a liner. So what is it was?
- 46:32I think there's a fabulous bit of direction in a minute.
- 46:34As a really simple shot where you're inside, Jack's spaceship
- 46:39and then it pulls back inside the Tardis, the camera you
- 46:43remember and you go for is The opposite of that shot.
- 46:47You get in the sensor is when they go out of the TARDIS.
- 46:50Oh, I see spaceship. Yeah, it's really simply done,
- 46:54but it's really effective, nice. Well, yeah.
- 46:59There he goes. That's quite a nice star.
- 47:01Feel this Flapjacks flying off into as look like a Star Trek.
- 47:04Special effect. I think that's a big difference
- 47:05from the Star Trek Voyager theme.
- 47:08You know. Oh yeah.
- 47:10Very long. Start over.
- 47:12Wasting my god. Look, he has to get one more
- 47:14sex, gagging, doesn't he in a minute?
- 47:16Goes off that's a fabulous time with my captors, both of them
- 47:20with a fabulous night. Like he's got no Escape pod.
- 47:27Joe, what's he going to do? Stick out?
- 47:30Because it was nice. It was in that two-parter.
- 47:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. One of carrying them, he
- 47:42probably be well remembered as a one-off character, you know?
- 47:46Yeah. I mean it wasn't until I was a
- 47:50rather peculiar retrospective Counseling of them.
- 47:53The stuff that was already always out in the open, its peak
- 47:56was old, wasn't it? Yeah.
- 47:58I don't want to say much in fear of being canceled.
- 48:03I have an opinion, but you're uncomfortable.
- 48:08Obviously, this is serious about time travel.
- 48:16You have to send in with their dolls in a way in the Tardis.
- 48:19It's it's very nice to have an uplifting ending like that.
- 48:22Yeah. I mean I don't know about to me
- 48:24this I was feeling this was trying to drag but I know a
- 48:27little bit. I feel like this story ended two
- 48:29minutes ago and I still got another two minutes to go like
- 48:33they play in the lowland Doctor Who ends.
- 48:34He's, he's saved. Everyone's lives to get to.
- 48:37This actually goes. That's the end of the story.
- 48:40It's not a sex. It's the show's over.
- 48:43It's climaxed. Why are we still here?
- 48:45We're taking my place now you are.
- 48:51I feel like this is slocombe has made an appearance.
- 48:55Although, to be fair, this whole our sequence is one long.
- 48:57Sex gag, isn't it? Yes.
- 48:59Yes. Oh, here's the short you talking
- 49:01about. So the camera pans, soundlessly
- 49:06with no dialogue. How he gets out of it.
- 49:08It's funny. That stuff always love seeing
- 49:12that I didn't exactly want to go with them though.
- 49:15You know, when I was watching this, I didn't even think he was
- 49:18going to be a companion. I'd forgotten that he stayed as
- 49:20I demonstrated a few seconds. I mean, I only came back in Bad
- 49:24Wolf. I can't remember if he was gone,
- 49:26I can't have forgotten where this wasn't surfing at me.
- 49:28I'm a rubbish fan. Also half-nelson It's Presley
- 49:33movie put, somebody's arm behind their backs of the trapped and
- 49:36can't get away. You've got them as a wrestling
- 49:39gag like that. Yeah.
- 49:42Well, it's a bit like a disco. Now, all the pulsing lights, I
- 49:49can't believe. You'd let him saying it's bigger
- 49:50on the inside. Get pass without comment.
- 49:57It always is with me. Is this all a metaphor are they
- 50:03actually shagging but because they got on show that it's just
- 50:06characters down there Just Dance instead.
- 50:08No, it's not. It's just Doctor Who having a
- 50:10nice dancing exactly the way he probably danced with dodo, 40
- 50:14years earlier. That's right.
- 50:16It's it becomes more explicit, this sort of stuff, you know, in
- 50:19about three or four seasons time.
- 50:23Right now. We're still in the ambiguous
- 50:24face. Yeah.
- 50:25And it's been playing with it is quite fun but also I can't just
- 50:30keep playing with it. It's quite fun.
- 50:31Playing with our expectations. Oh, what structure of The Story
- 50:35Goes Because it's funny it's one of
- 51:03the funniest Doctor Who stories and its really well-acted and
- 51:07it's unusual, it breaks your expectations but it still takes
- 51:11you on a journey that feels like a Doctor Who episode.
- 51:13It doesn't feel like it's not trying.
- 51:15It does feel like it's trying to not be Doctor Who is just doing
- 51:18something different but it's still distill Peppers it with
- 51:22with the seasonings of a normal doctor, episode 2.
- 51:25So if cleverly has its cake of being different and eats it, I
- 51:30mean how do you just said it has a net bad landing it for a
- 51:33however that as well. Yes, yes, but right because for
- 51:38me I've got a thing with I just noticed that episodes that I do
- 51:42or don't like and other people. I know will like her so that I
- 51:46don't like or whatever is often the funny ones it.
- 51:49So it's with a scary episode tends to scare everyone the same
- 51:53amount or but a funny episode. It depends what tickles you and
- 51:58different people, find different things.
- 52:00Me more so than find things scary.
- 52:02So I remember you saying, you weren't a massive fan of sort of
- 52:07the Latter-Day growing Williams humor, but you do like so smart.
- 52:12Yeah. Yeah, it has its moments but I
- 52:14did that Williams era in general.
- 52:16I don't like it because it's funny.
- 52:17I'm sorry. I'm not the biggest fan of the
- 52:20Williams era, but I know people who are, but that's because
- 52:25it's, it doesn't all what? I don't always find it all that
- 52:27funny. Well, not because not, I don't
- 52:29think they'll Who shouldn't be funny?
- 52:31I wonder. But yeah, that's yeah, that's
- 52:32what I'm just going to do a quick fire quiz then to gauge
- 52:35old Witch Doctor Who's you find funny or not.
- 52:37Okay do you even say funny or not?
- 52:40Yeah the Romans funny. The gunfighters very funny.
- 52:45The mythmakers funny I think it's a menace occasionally
- 52:52slightly funny. The time Monster.
- 52:55Not funny city of death. Yes.
- 53:00No. Yes.
- 53:07Because you love it, you know, your podcast.
- 53:16Jive Bunny, and the no do unicorn and the WASP?
- 53:21Yes, hilarious. Closing time.
- 53:26God, do robot of Sherwood, can't remember.
- 53:31Oh, awesome. 55 hilarious, comedy, you know.
- 53:43Yeah, yeah. I was yeah, I've just got two
- 53:47stories, forgotten. The names of every Doctor Who
- 53:49story. I'm good at doing that.
- 53:51Hey, can I ask you to do something now for me, please.
- 53:53What's that? Joe, you take, you know, much
- 53:56concentration. And then it would you please
- 54:00with me give three reasons as to why you would recommend the ends
- 54:06child, in the doctor, dances start with you, then to make
- 54:09them to you than to me, then to you than to me.
- 54:15Brilliantly evocative setting. Is that your whole point, that's
- 54:23one. Yeah.
- 54:24Oh okay. Those three words.
- 54:26But one point I believe really need to know but okay.
- 54:35Alright, okay, so I thought you would I thought.
- 54:37Yeah so yeah okay yeah it's pretty well painted.
- 54:40It takes you to its version of 1941 and and completely fits and
- 54:48proves a doctor who can do that and that this Doctor and that
- 54:51Rose, this girl from 2000. And this teenager, from 2005 can
- 54:55be can be there and can be meeting Nancy and that scene
- 54:57with Nancy is so important. Yeah, I would say that this is
- 55:04proof that to anybody, that I don't always low Steven Moffat.
- 55:10I think at his absolute best, he can be one of the best writers
- 55:16doctor you've ever had. But that's a matter of personal
- 55:21taste because I know people that love this stuff later on as
- 55:23well, but they don't. Listen.
- 55:26Now you're 41 subscribed a long time ago.
- 55:28Sorry, Joe. This is morphe before his
- 55:34reputation here where he thought he might have had one.
- 55:37Sure, Ryan Doctor Who so he's tried to write as good.
- 55:40A doctor who has he ever could? And it is very assured and it's
- 55:45brilliant back to you. It's it's scary.
- 55:53And it's scary in a clever way that it because it's inventive.
- 56:02So yeah, I'm going to, I'm going to say it very brief moment and
- 56:06that is the resolution to the Cliffhanger, which we discussed
- 56:10earlier, but is just very clever and very funny as well.
- 56:17Yeah, it doesn't cheat and it's really simple.
- 56:20Yeah. And it's the doctor thinking
- 56:22outside the box when I think of something that the other
- 56:24characters wouldn't have thought of the music, this is one of my,
- 56:31one of my Everett Marigold scores, it does exactly what I
- 56:36want the music to do. It carries me, underlined some
- 56:38scenes. It leads to other scenes alone
- 56:41and other scenes. It really highlights and takes
- 56:43them to and gives you really good moments of climax.
- 56:49Yes. Do you prefer a second?
- 56:52I can I lose music. Yes.
- 56:54Well, but it's there's horses because it's, I mean, yes, I do
- 56:58in the sense that I probably wouldn't know if you stayed for
- 57:01seven years, the right if you were still doing it after eight
- 57:03years, I might not do. But yeah it was it was that was
- 57:07a lot. I love his version of theme
- 57:09music and yeah I love you. I really like it but it's a
- 57:12change have been as good, it's changed me.
- 57:13I don't think any I think anything in Doctor Who should
- 57:15stay in the same style for more I'm 23 years, that's just doctor
- 57:20who survived as long as it has, because it doesn't usually do
- 57:23that because it reinvigorates and, and I mean, that
- 57:26circulation of of creative people, all of them, giving it
- 57:31maybe two, three years of their Peak or in their early, early
- 57:35peaks of their careers is an amazing thing ever.
- 57:38That's what it, I think it really needs that, that's not
- 57:40just a bonus feature Marigold sort of had his stick and Almost
- 57:47became a bit of a parody of how good it was earlier on in his
- 57:51latest season, a sad moments. But I can hola came in a sort of
- 57:56a bit more ambient and a bit more subtle and he developed a
- 58:01style along with the series as a serious change.
- 58:04It's only got a bit more bombastic in say the James Bond
- 58:09parody, what's it called? Spy for?
- 58:10Yeah, that's what I thought. Yeah.
- 58:11And then he was doing full-on cinematic in flock.
- 58:14So I think I think there was a real he was Dying to be on
- 58:18Murray gold, like very deliberately because they want
- 58:19their wanted to have a fresh sound and that's his natural
- 58:22thing and it was like he had to fake it, that's what he normally
- 58:24does. But after a while it's a button
- 58:26and like I know memorials got there, people were huge Marigold
- 58:29fans and just love, can't wait for the next things come out and
- 58:32let me go to the end with the man with the singer.
- 58:48Gorgeous. Yeah well I my third thing
- 58:51because I've gone on tangent is going to be did a little, a
- 58:55little, a little, a little, a little, a little, a little in
- 58:57that I really like the very powerful domestic angle that's
- 59:03hit in series one of the new series and I feel like the
- 59:09climax of this story. Really, for me, it's nothing to
- 59:13do with the plot mechanics, if the character of Nancy And her
- 59:17realization and getting her son back at.
- 59:20It's really beautifully done. Well, acted well, written, well
- 59:24scored, as you say. And I remember the first time I
- 59:27watched it, and I realized how I'd been duped, she was his
- 59:32mother and that have been spell out to me for fucking 90
- 59:36minutes. The I'm kind of like,
- 59:38goosebumps, you know? Yeah, yeah.
- 59:40In all the right ways. Yeah, it was fantastically good.
- 59:44There was a book that I'd read a few years earlier, and Ville by
- 59:48Kate Atkinson or what say its name because it was a spoiler.
- 59:52But basically it has the same ending and so that I haven't, I
- 59:56still wasn't been thinking it, I think so.
- 59:58I think it had maybe crossed my mind, but I didn't think that
- 1:00:00that was what was? I didn't think it was likely to
- 1:00:02be that. Yeah, it's very good.
- 1:00:06Well, Pete. Where are we heading next?
- 1:00:09My friend. Well, after sex ed, where
- 1:00:13everyone lives and where positivity wins the day.
- 1:00:17Let's go to a planet of death, a planet for death planet of
- 1:00:22inculcation of funerals. I can't believe you've been
- 1:00:26doing this podcast or a million years.
- 1:00:27And I've done 890 12d, Ken episodes of Doctor Who, and
- 1:00:31nobody has done Revelations the Garlic's yet.
- 1:00:33No one has asked do it. Well, I've become weak attach
- 1:00:37information Silas, please Joe no real basic.
- 1:00:40We chose to be one of my all-time favorite stories of all
- 1:00:42time, like multiplies, top five for me of classic who easily
- 1:00:47absolutely easily. Block off.
- 1:00:49Fabulous stories to drop about the director.
- 1:00:51That I've met. Obviously, a lot of the actors
- 1:00:54that I've met Awesome. Well then I just need me to
- 1:00:59thank you very much for your time as ever and I hope.
- 1:01:05And I hope any appearances about having a joke about which
- 1:01:11episodes I like, and don't like, and I hope, I haven't let anyone
- 1:01:16through a lot with trashing their beloved episodes because
- 1:01:18everyone likes different things. And that's what it's all about
- 1:01:20enough trash in people's. She's okay.
- 1:01:26The only Stone this thing, right?
- 1:01:27That's true, the flight for entirety thing of saying that
- 1:01:30you things are okay. When you think they're in pile
- 1:01:32of dog shit. Fortunately, we both love
- 1:01:37Revelation the darling. So which is going to be at that
- 1:01:39is gonna be a blast, it's gonna be a little edit it.
- 1:01:41You know what? It's going to be it's going to
- 1:01:42be Exquisite plus. I'm going to do loads of tasm
- 1:01:46Beaker impressions as well. Oh, blimey, you must have some
- 1:01:50figure. I can be Elena bronze but I can
- 1:01:51beam Cara good secretaries. So very hard to come by the
- 1:01:58gray. Ala has ordered you dead fella.
- 1:02:03Daddy. Dyer was that?
- 1:02:08He's that he's like, Danny Dyer, not ever said that to me before.
- 1:02:15I'm gonna cut it there. There's nobody as no.
- 1:02:20Let's be honest. I'll sound like a Dalek.
- 1:02:22Yeah, I had the thing that I say on recording, because know, if
- 1:02:27it's true or not, but someone told me that when Jenny Thomas
- 1:02:29in died, no one knew and she was just a her body was locked in
- 1:02:34her flat. Four days with her cats.
- 1:02:37Oh no, they didn't. Well no, but I just somebody
- 1:02:41just sort of said it to me with sort of dot dot dot.
- 1:02:44And was like, Let's not go. There.
- 1:02:46We just bought The Upstairs Downstairs.
- 1:02:48Box set. Fuck, I'm interested to see what
- 1:02:51she's like in there. Yeah, always guided the watch
- 1:02:53through when it was on talking pictures a few years ago and
- 1:02:56really got into it. It's very briefly but it
- 1:02:59attracts a lot and it really it's like it's superficially.
- 1:03:04It's a bit like Downton Abbey, but it's just not at all because
- 1:03:07the the script writing is so unpredictable and you'll get
- 1:03:13stories where one song Who's been a good character all the
- 1:03:15way through it suddenly turns into a complete bastard.
- 1:03:17And but because they're rich and they can get away with
- 1:03:20something. They do doesn't have super
- 1:03:22somebody, a drink driving episode.
- 1:03:24Where a the Posh girl kills somebody and just gets off
- 1:03:27scot-free because she's partially dad brought to the
- 1:03:29judge or something. All right.
- 1:03:32That's later on. Yeah.
- 1:03:33That's not a spoiler. Play this place.
- 1:03:34Re-watching, secret army. And I'm what I've been that's
- 1:03:40been on my radar for ages. I really want to watch that I've
- 1:03:43been watching. The Dickens the classic cereals
- 1:03:47that Dex Dex, that lets and dicks script editor and
- 1:03:52producer. We watch the Pickwick papers
- 1:03:54which was brilliant. And there was just, we just
- 1:03:57watched the Oliver Twist that Terrance dicks produced.
- 1:04:00Hey, it was excellent. Is the best version of Oliver
- 1:04:04Twist. I've ever seen.
- 1:04:05You go onto DVD. Yeah, it's like a Charles
- 1:04:07Dickens collection. It's cool.
- 1:04:10Yeah, fantastic give that watch my doing, yeah.
- 1:04:14Yeah, thats a good shoutout. There's nothing there on brick
- 1:04:16box early. No, go ahead.
- 1:04:18Look because there's a couple of them that are missing from the
- 1:04:20set by individually. Just annoying, right?
- 1:04:27Thank you. That I'm looking pretty,
- 1:04:35fresh-faced, I think for a long cold day, like that, actually.
- 1:04:38You look at you looking really good understand that you mind
- 1:04:40looking really good really sharp and, and well done on Taking
- 1:04:44that decision about your work. I'm sure it's going to going to
- 1:04:47leave you in a happy place. So what up?
- 1:04:52Let's talk and we'll get another date.
- 1:04:54Put in for relations. I'm sure.
- 1:05:46Sorry when that phrase. Doesn't know why they lift that
- 1:05:49up. Hello.
- 1:05:51Jill prevailed, a new costume. Do you got a hoodie on?
- 1:05:58I'm just wearing this time. I thought you were in a gray
- 1:06:01t-shirt and I haven't read the entire time.
- 1:06:04It looks, it looks green. Now I did notice that time and I
- 1:06:12had a coffee but not An entire change.
- 1:06:20So, so rough, I tried back. When we nearly recorded this
- 1:06:24previously, I recorded myself. Some voice notes and I think I
- 1:06:27must have been. I think it was been driving and
- 1:06:30just put it on to record now come in driving what I've been
- 1:06:32doing well, but I've been what I'll be recording voice notes.
- 1:06:35I was told you my room or something because I'd only don't
- 1:06:39often do this at all. And here's why.
- 1:06:41Because it's like, I put it onto.
- 1:06:44What's that? Sorry I should speak to any I
- 1:06:46mean voice. To text, my phone can do
- 1:06:50automatic voice to text note taking.
- 1:06:52So you've got yourself a written note, whatever you say into it,
- 1:06:54as all phones count. But mine isn't very good and
- 1:06:57it's reading it and it says on there Will watching this after
- 1:07:06lockdowns, feel different. Oh yeah, Blitz spirit and
- 1:07:09everything that we experienced our own, our generation splits
- 1:07:12question for Joe. What classic doctor is this as I
- 1:07:16just asked you first John Smith since the time Warrior.
- 1:07:21And then I say, enter, enter, hello new fucking territory
- 1:07:26laughs. And then I say, enter enter
- 1:07:31zero, stop your fucking mechanoid.
- 1:07:34Now, working mechanoids up. I think that I gave up that's
- 1:07:38the entirety of the verbal note-taking that I did and then
- 1:07:41I'll put an obvious having very profound thoughts about this
- 1:07:45story. I'm just scrolling through do
- 1:07:53things. Things to talk about the not
- 1:07:54mentioned yet Moffat dialogue. Well, we have talked about that
- 1:07:57really having Williams quite good in this.
- 1:07:59Not enough though. Not enough.
- 1:08:01Why is it tolerable here? Yeah, good idea.
- 1:08:04Why are you testing this is? Yeah.
- 1:08:08What? Because I just looked at up
- 1:08:11while we were talking but I think I remember us.
- 1:08:17Russell say to Davis saying in an interview somewhere that when
- 1:08:20you got them off, at script coming in, you know that nobody
- 1:08:22needs to do anything to it. So, I don't think anybody dad.
- 1:08:26Would you what? That's a writing this down.
- 1:08:29Instead of saying to me now. Had you watched other had you
- 1:08:33watched over by other Moffat stuff for us, because I hadn't,
- 1:08:36I just never seen press gang, but have seen it now or some of
- 1:08:42it. I hadn't seen it then know I'd
- 1:08:44seen coupling Meaning I have, yeah, intolerable friends was
- 1:08:51bad enough. The British friends, as written
- 1:08:54by Steven Moffat and they all really Smoky.
- 1:08:57It was very well structured. It was a brilliantly structured,
- 1:09:00but it was so smart. Yeah.
- 1:09:03Rendus another characters were likable, not one of them, and
- 1:09:08two of them written to be fucking idiots at.
- 1:09:10So, all the jokes were at their expense all the time.
- 1:09:13Okay. Yeah.
- 1:09:14It was utterly sex. Mad, no there.
- 1:09:16To, it was like smile, a bloke and a girl.
- 1:09:21They were just fucking imbeciles.
- 1:09:22It was really annoying show. MASH, it's a delight in the
- 1:09:26episode on my dad. I've got a problem with that.
- 1:09:29Okay, okay, okay, come on, let's do it.
- 1:09:33I'm on a roll. We should I answer this one.
- 1:09:38Yes, please! Okay, look at me.
- 1:09:41Sorry, I'm just tired of just writing out of course for things
- 1:09:43to discuss with them, although it's as well as always.
- 1:09:46Where do these with you? I think if I write things down
- 1:09:48and then we just talk, so definitely the you don't need
- 1:09:51much as you need to read your notes, you should.
- 1:09:54And, you know, I always thing. I asked was, do we like actually
- 1:09:57say anything? And I listen back.
- 1:09:58Alright, wow, it's a lot every time I'll go.
- 1:10:01Wow, it actually that. And it's like you say, it's very
- 1:10:04rarely about the fucking story. You're talking about.
- 1:10:07It's often of That other stuff. Yeah, yeah it's provokes
- 1:10:11conversation come in then Does your turn?
- 1:10:17Yeah, Count Me In. Three two, one.
- 1:10:21Three two. One go are.
- 1:10:22You booklets? Are you recording?
- 1:10:24Is this still the same recording?
- 1:10:26Yeah.
