- 0:01Through long habit, spiritual seekers tend to look at the
- 0:04question of how to attain spiritual liberation involving
- 0:09abandonment of the external life in the world.
- 0:13Not only spiritual seekers raise this question in some form or
- 0:17another, anyone involved in aesthetic, mental, artistic or
- 0:23emotional or vital pursuits. Eventually tries to find ways to
- 0:28overcome the limits and restraints of the physical
- 0:31material consciousness. Clearly, there is an element of
- 0:36truth in the need to be able to move beyond these limitations if
- 0:40one wants to achieve anything in the vital mental or spiritual
- 0:44aspects of one's life. Yet it is not a complete truth
- 0:50as it condemns the universal creation to some kind of
- 0:54irrelevancy. Or elusive distraction from
- 0:58these higher pursuits. Sriorobindo reviews this issue
- 1:03in depth in The Life Divine. He comes to a different
- 1:07conclusion about the goal of the spiritual seeking by taking us
- 1:12through the human aspiration to the two basic opposite
- 1:16viewpoints, that of the materialist who fixes himself
- 1:21upon success in the external world.
- 1:24And that of the ascetic who focuses on the spiritual.
- 1:29His conclusion is that there's no necessary separation.
- 1:33The universal manifestation is an omnipresent reality which
- 1:38encompasses all aspects of life as the seeker begins to
- 1:42appreciate and understand this unified view, this continuum
- 1:48between matter and spirit. The question is not so much how
- 1:53to abandon the physical consciousness, but how to
- 1:56transform it to reveal the spiritual reality that permeates
- 2:01and creates it. A disciple inquires how should
- 2:07we come out of the physical consciousness, which keeps us
- 2:10preoccupied all the time and exclusively with physical
- 2:14circumstances, The mother observes quote.
- 2:20There is a considerable number of ways.
- 2:22There are intellectual ways, ways of which may be called
- 2:26sentimental, artistic ways and spiritual ways.
- 2:31And generally it is preferable for each one to take the way
- 2:35that is easiest for him. For if one wants to begin
- 2:39straight away with the most difficult, one comes to nothing
- 2:43at all. And here we always come back to
- 2:46the same thing. To what Triorobindo describes in
- 2:50the synthesis of yoga, it is the way of knowledge, or the way of
- 2:55devotion, or the way of works. But the way of works is
- 3:00precisely the one which keeps you in physical life and makes
- 3:05you find your liberation in it. And perhaps this is the most
- 3:10effective way of all, but also the most difficult for most
- 3:16aspirants. The way of meditation,
- 3:19concentration, withdrawal from physical life, rejection of
- 3:24physical activities is certainly easier than the way of action.
- 3:30But they leave the physical consciousness just as it is
- 3:33without ever changing it. And unless one becomes like a
- 3:37sadhu or an ascetic who leaves behind all active life and
- 3:42remains in constant concentration or meditation.
- 3:47One achieves nothing at all. That is to say, an entire part
- 3:51of the being is never transformed.
- 3:55And for them the solution is not at all to transform it, it is
- 3:59simply to reject it, to get out of their body as quickly as
- 4:04possible. That is how yoga was conceived
- 4:07of formerly, for obviously it is much easier, but this is not
- 4:14what we want. What we want is the
- 4:17transformation of the physical consciousness, not its
- 4:21rejection. And so in this case, what trio
- 4:24Bendo has recommended as the most direct and most total way
- 4:29is surrender to the divine, a surrender made more and more
- 4:34integral progressively comprising the physical
- 4:37consciousness and physical activities.
- 4:41And if one succeeds in this then the physical.
- 4:46Instead of being an obstacle becomes a help.
