- 0:28This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:30Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:32tenth annual health IT, digital health, and RCM
- 0:35meeting. I'm currently joined by Michael Hahn, who
- 0:37is the chief medical information officer at MultiCare
- 0:39Health System. Michael, thanks for being here. Let's
- 0:42have you start off by sharing a little
- 0:43bit more about your background and your work
- 0:45in health
- 0:46care. Sure. So my name is Michael Hahn.
- 0:48I work for MultiCare Health System.
- 0:50We are a 13 hospital,
- 0:53integrated delivery network, based in Tacoma, Washington.
- 0:56We have about 13 hospitals,
- 0:5827,000
- 0:59employees,
- 1:00and I am a urologist by background.
- 1:04And so I practiced urology for,
- 1:07about fifteen or sixteen years before I made
- 1:11on the leap into full time,
- 1:13into a full time informatics role. So I'm
- 1:16presently the chief medical information officer at MultiCare.
- 1:20I'm responsible for all physician
- 1:22and advanced practice provider,
- 1:24facing
- 1:25software,
- 1:26in terms of governance,
- 1:28implementation,
- 1:28and adoption.
- 1:30I'm particularly interested in in any,
- 1:34applications,
- 1:35that can help improve,
- 1:37the patient and physician,
- 1:39experience.
- 1:40Wonderful. Well, again, thanks for being here. And
- 1:43let's start with talking about AI because nearly
- 1:45half of medical practices reported using AI in
- 1:48some capacity in the last year, and it
- 1:50does remain the key topic for health IT
- 1:52leaders.
- 1:53So from your perspective, what are the use
- 1:54cases that are making a difference right now,
- 1:56and how are you leveraging them in your
- 1:58organization?
- 1:59Yeah. So,
- 2:02from
- 2:03a clinical standpoint,
- 2:05our our first
- 2:06applications that we really implemented,
- 2:08at MultiCare,
- 2:10were in,
- 2:11the early detection of stroke,
- 2:14in the ER. So, we have, two vendors
- 2:17that are currently live,
- 2:18and and and time is time is neurons.
- 2:21And so,
- 2:22these applications have certainly helped us in this
- 2:25space.
- 2:26I think that you can't go anywhere in
- 2:28this conference without running into something,
- 2:31regarding ambient clinical documentation.
- 2:34And so right now, we are in a
- 2:36a three way trial,
- 2:38comparing three separate vendors,
- 2:40with almost 500 providers,
- 2:42at MultiCare.
- 2:44And and, you know, I'm pleased to
- 2:46report
- 2:47our initial survey data,
- 2:50has been absolutely
- 2:51astounding.
- 2:52We have, gone from a twenty three percent
- 2:55burnout rate,
- 2:56prior to using ambient clinical acclimation
- 2:59to a less than four percent burnout rate.
- 3:01And at the same time, we've gone from,
- 3:04only eight percent of providers in the trial,
- 3:07who stated they enjoyed practice,
- 3:09before the trial,
- 3:11moved to over thirty six percent of providers,
- 3:14saying that they, were enjoying their practice after
- 3:17implementing,
- 3:18an ambient clinical documentation solution.
- 3:21So, you know, I'm extremely bullish on on
- 3:24ambient clinical documentation,
- 3:26and how it's gonna affect not just the
- 3:28the the physician and APP experience,
- 3:31but the,
- 3:32patient experience.
- 3:34Absolutely.
- 3:35And as virtual care expands from AI enabled
- 3:38tools and remote monitoring
- 3:40to broader digital health platforms, introducing these new
- 3:42technologies does bring its own challenges.
- 3:45So what advice do you have for leaders
- 3:47navigating everything from governance to patient engagement? And
- 3:50can you share an example of how your
- 3:52organization has balanced innovation with operational constraints?
- 3:56I think I'm gonna
- 3:57tackle this one from a governance standpoint.
- 4:00You know, when and I and I guess
- 4:01I'll go back to our ambient clinical documentation
- 4:04trial.
- 4:05This was not something that IT did
- 4:08to the physician enterprise.
- 4:10This is something,
- 4:12that myself and our physician leadership,
- 4:17embarked on together.
- 4:18And so they were able to get,
- 4:21the the the provider buy in, that was
- 4:23necessary to make this, pilot successful, and I
- 4:26was able to get,
- 4:28the buy in from an IT and governance
- 4:30standpoint. And so by working together,
- 4:32we were able to deliver this tool that
- 4:34that that I'm gonna call game changing,
- 4:36for our for our providers at MultiCare.
- 4:39And final question as we do wrap up
- 4:41our conversation. I'd love to know your top
- 4:43piece of advice for health care leaders as
- 4:45they prepare for further advancements in technology and
- 4:48rising demands for care.
- 4:50I think I'm gonna double click on what
- 4:51what what, what we just talked about in
- 4:53terms of
- 4:54the importance
- 4:55of IT
- 4:56and medical leadership working hand in hand,
- 5:00arm in arm to implement new technology.
- 5:02The IT tail can't wag, the operational clinical
- 5:05and and clinical dog.
- 5:07We we need to work together in order
- 5:09to prioritize,
- 5:12new solutions,
- 5:13and implement these new solutions
- 5:15and drive adoption of these new solutions.
- 5:19Absolutely. Well, Michael, thanks so much for being
- 5:21here today and joining me on the Becker's
- 5:22Healthcare Podcast. Again, we are recording live at
- 5:24the tenth annual health IT, digital health, and
- 5:27RCM meeting.
