- Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Michael Benatar. Today on the show: the Colts just gave up on Anthony Richardson, Aaron Rodgers is still making Pittsburgh sweat, the Lakers punched their ticket to the second round, and the Sabres won a playoff series for the first time in nearly two decades. Let's get into it. Alright, Indianapolis. The Colts officially declined the fifth-year option on Anthony Richardson's rookie contract. This isn't a surprise. But it IS a big deal. When you use the fourth overall pick on a quarterback, you're telling your entire fanbase — this is the guy. This is the future. And now, two years later, the Colts are saying — yeah, never mind. Richardson has the arm talent. Everyone knows that. The physical tools are elite. But you can't build around a guy who can't stay healthy and can't put it together when he IS on the field. The writing's been on the wall for a while. Indianapolis would love to trade him, but who's calling? No team is giving up real draft capital for a quarterback who hasn't proven he can start in this league. So what happens? He sits there. Maybe a team loses their guy to a torn ACL in August and makes a desperation call. Maybe he ends up on a veteran minimum deal somewhere. Either way — not every athletic freak translates. And the Colts are back to square one at the most important position in sports. NFL — Aaron Rodgers is still out here holding Pittsburgh hostage. The Steelers slapped an unrestricted free agent tender on him, which gives him a ten percent raise from last year's salary and keeps their negotiating rights through July. They also drafted Drew Allar in the third round, so they're not stupid. But OTAs start May eighteenth. If Rodgers isn't in that building on that Monday, this is gonna get loud. Michael Wilbon called the whole Rodgers obsession "laughable" in terms of winning anything. And yeah, that tracks. At some point you gotta stop waiting on a forty-two-year-old to decide if he feels like playing football. The Vrabel situation in New England is still simmering too. He's back with the team after those photos surfaced from that Arizona resort. Drake Maye and Hunter Henry both came out publicly supporting him. Henry said Vrabel addressed it with the team and "did a great job." But Kalshi has Vrabel at only seventy-seven percent to be the Patriots' coach Week One. That's your head coach sitting at seventy-seven percent in MAY. That number should be ninety-nine. The fact that it's not — the betting market thinks there's more to come. Also worth mentioning — DK Metcalf won't face criminal charges for that incident with a Lions fan back in December. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office cleared him. But that fan, Ryan Kennedy, still has a hundred million dollar civil lawsuit pending. So this story isn't done. And Justin Simmons officially retired. Four-time All-Pro, three-time Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee. Helluva career. Respect. Now to the NBA — the Lakers closed out Houston ninety-eight to seventy-eight. LeBron had twenty-eight, Rui Hachimura added twenty-one, and LA used a twenty-seven to three run in the first half to put this one away early. Kevin Durant was out again with the ankle, and the Rockets just didn't have enough without him. Lakers win the series four to two and now get Oklahoma City in the second round. Good luck with that. The other two games were wild. Detroit erased a twenty-two-point halftime deficit to beat Orlando ninety-three to seventy-nine. Cade Cunningham scored nineteen of his thirty-two points in the fourth quarter. Orlando missed TWENTY-THREE consecutive shots during Detroit's run. That's not a slump. That's a full system failure. Series is tied three to three heading to Detroit for Game seven. And in Toronto, RJ Barrett hit a three with one point two seconds left in overtime to beat Cleveland one twelve to one ten. Scottie Barnes had twenty-five and fourteen assists. Evan Mobley had a look to win it at the buzzer and it clanged off the front rim. Series tied three to three. Game seven Sunday in Cleveland. Three Game sevens in the East this weekend. That's a lot of basketball. Quick hockey — the Buffalo Sabres beat Boston four to one to win the series in six. Buffalo's first playoff series win since 2007. They hadn't even MADE the playoffs since 2011. That fourteen-year drought was an NHL record. And now they're in the second round. Tage Thompson had two assists, Alex Lyon was solid with twenty-five saves. Good for Buffalo. That fanbase deserved something. And the Golden Knights handled Utah five to one to close out that series in six. Mitch Marner scored twice. Tampa and Montreal are headed to Game seven after the Lightning won one to nothing in overtime on a Gage Goncalves goal. Vasilevskiy was a brick wall — thirty saves, shutout through regulation and OT. Alright, Hangover Take. The Kentucky Derby is today. Post time is six fifty-seven PM Eastern on NBC. And I want to say something that horse racing people don't wanna hear — this is the only day of the year most of America cares about your sport. That's it. One Saturday in May. And that's fine. Lean into it. But stop pretending the sport has mainstream momentum beyond three races. What it DOES have is a great party, overpriced mint juleps, and an excuse to wear a ridiculous hat on a Saturday afternoon. I'll be watching. I'll bet a few bucks. And I won't think about horse racing again until the Preakness. And neither will you. Enjoy the Derby, everybody. That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
