- 0:31Open your Bible's Genesis, Chapter 40.
- 0:34Genesis Chapter 40. The title of our message is
- 0:38Learning to No Longer Hope in Man.
- 0:43I want you to consider in your own life, how often you trust
- 0:48man. You trust the word of a man or a
- 0:51woman. You, you hold on to that to the
- 0:54degree where you trust in the hope, and you trust in hope and
- 0:58man to a greater degree than you trust in God.
- 1:03Where if someone makes you a promise and it encourages you,
- 1:06but then God makes promise after promise and you wonder if he's
- 1:10going to come through, where you're going to trust the guy to
- 1:12keep his promise in your life. But there are those seasons
- 1:15where you don't even trust God when he's made a promise where
- 1:19he desires to work on our behalf.
- 1:21Joseph is learning this. He's learning it in a very
- 1:25painful way to no longer hope in man.
- 1:29And it's a hard season. We drop into Joseph's life here.
- 1:32It's a hard season of his life. Pain upon pain.
- 1:36And in the midst of pain, God is showing favor.
- 1:39Notice back in chapter 39, verse 21, it says, but the Lord was
- 1:44with Joseph and this is the secret to his success.
- 1:47It's not a secret. It's made here very publicly.
- 1:50That the Lord was with Joseph, and he showed him mercy and he
- 1:55gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
- 1:59Things are looking up in this difficult time in Joseph's life.
- 2:03He's receiving favor in God's blessing.
- 2:06Not only that, he was given more responsibility.
- 2:09In verse 22 of 39, the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's
- 2:13hand. All the prisoners who were in
- 2:14the prison, whatever they did there, it was his doing.
- 2:17And the keeper of the prison didn't even look into anything
- 2:19that was under Joseph's hand, because the Lord was with him.
- 2:23And if you haven't already written in your Bibles, circle
- 2:26that phrase in verse 21, circle that phrase in verse 23, and
- 2:31make sure you circle that phrase in your life.
- 2:34This is the key and the secret to your success.
- 2:37Anything good in your life is because the Lord is with you.
- 2:42As a believer, the Lord is with you.
- 2:45Even as an unbeliever, the favor of God is because God is with
- 2:49you. He it's his grace.
- 2:53He deserves all the credit even to those that are rebellious and
- 2:58angry and even what you would call God haters.
- 3:01You are alive and able to hate God because God is loving and
- 3:06merciful towards you. It wouldn't be possible
- 3:09otherwise. He has given you life and is
- 3:13patient with you. With Joseph, just when things
- 3:17begin to look up, the bottom falls out again.
- 3:21That's the pattern of his life. Just when you think he's making
- 3:25progress. The Lord is with you, Joe, the
- 3:27Lord is with you. Look like even this difficult
- 3:30situation God has shown you favor.
- 3:32And it says in verse one of chapter 40 it came to pass after
- 3:37these things. I remind you from time to time
- 3:42that these are the kind of phrases that we read over.
- 3:45We just read over because it's an introductory sentence to a
- 3:48new paragraph, or in this case, to a new chapter.
- 3:52It was after these things. It came to pass after these
- 3:56things and I want to teach you as a as a pastor and his Bible
- 4:01student. To not skip these phrases,
- 4:03especially when you have a couple, you have some extra time
- 4:06in the word where you can just pause for a second and just ask
- 4:09the question What things? What things?
- 4:13What things is the Bible referring to?
- 4:16And the way to answer that question is to answer it in
- 4:18context. We just did that already in
- 4:20chapter 39. You look to what came before,
- 4:24what's happening before, what's happening before.
- 4:26Joseph is receiving favor from the Lord Joseph.
- 4:30Has experiencing the presence of God.
- 4:31He's enjoying it. As hard as the situation is, God
- 4:34is with him. And it was in these times of
- 4:38great progress that come great warfare, great difficulty, great
- 4:43challenges. Joseph provides for us an
- 4:46example of faith in God, in situations that we can't see how
- 4:51it's going to turn out. We're living in the favor of
- 4:55God. But it's after these things that
- 4:56came to pass. It's in the midst of these
- 4:59things that came to pass. You see in Joseph's life, we
- 5:03have the opportunity and the privilege of seeing what God is
- 5:06doing. He's giving us insight of what
- 5:09God is doing behind the scenes. But like Joseph, you and I don't
- 5:14know what's happening behind the scenes in our lives.
- 5:18Joseph encourages us because it tells us God is doing something
- 5:21behind the scenes, but I don't know what He's doing in my life
- 5:24behind the scenes yet. In God's timing and Providence,
- 5:28he's going to reveal it to me, but I don't know yet.
- 5:32Things might be looking up for me then.
- 5:34There might be some warfare, but there might be something so much
- 5:37more bigger. It's not might be.
- 5:38There is something so much bigger that I don't quite see
- 5:41yet. I see right now.
- 5:42The Bible says in a mirror, dimly.
- 5:46I don't have the full picture. It's not crystal clear.
- 5:50I see a little bit up ahead, but with Joseph we learn nothing.
- 5:55Just so happens. Because God knows what's
- 5:57happening. He understands these things in
- 6:01Joseph's life are training him, and the things in your life are
- 6:05training you and preparing you like he was preparing Joseph and
- 6:10equipping you like he was equipping Joseph.
- 6:13And if anyone had the right to question God or, you know, look
- 6:18like they had the right to question God of the difficulties
- 6:21they face, I think it would have been Joseph.
- 6:23But he doesn't. He humbly submits to his life,
- 6:27as bad as it was in the moment. He lived a submitted life, a
- 6:31surrendered life in the preparation time.
- 6:34God doesn't see Joseph, doesn't even know what God's preparing
- 6:38him for, doesn't have any clue it from any standpoint.
- 6:45You know, if you're living Joseph's life and being in it
- 6:47from any standpoint, he's like, man, this is what it is.
- 6:49I better be a good prisoner. I don't even deserve to be here.
- 6:54I better be a good prisoner, because this is where I'm at.
- 6:56I'm not going to be able to undo what what happened before me.
- 7:00But here in this time it says in verse one, it came to pass after
- 7:06these things, that the Butler and the Baker of the king of
- 7:08Egypt offended their Lord, the king of Egypt.
- 7:12Pharaoh was angry with this two officers and the chief Butler
- 7:15and the chief Baker. So he put him in custody in the
- 7:17House of the captain of the guard in the prison, the place
- 7:21where Joseph was confined. This prison experience in
- 7:27Joseph's life is going to teach him how to care, going to
- 7:32develop in him a caring heart. It's going to teach him how to
- 7:35sense needs. It's going to give him a
- 7:38sensitivity to others needs. He's going to learn in this
- 7:41prison experience, in chapter 40 how to trust God.
- 7:45He's going to learn how to walk in humility and to stand in
- 7:48courage. And finally, he's going to learn
- 7:50how not to trust in man, or, as I phrased it, learning to no
- 7:54longer hope in man but to put your trust in the Lord.
- 7:59Now the Butler and the Baker come in to prison, but don't get
- 8:03in your mind. This idea of a traditional
- 8:06Butler who comes in with a plate and a thing over his arm and
- 8:09he's got a tuxedo on this would have been a man that was very
- 8:14influential place of trust and dependent, somebody super close
- 8:18to Pharaoh, highly trusted. We don't know exactly the
- 8:25responsibilities of the Butler, but the Baker we know would be
- 8:29in charge of his food he would be in charge of.
- 8:31What would be provided? There were some commentators
- 8:34that speculated that the issue that offended Pharaoh was that
- 8:40somehow poison was found. It wasn't found close to his
- 8:44lips, but it was found close to him.
- 8:47And that charge for that was being thrown in prison.
- 8:49But we don't know for sure. And where is Joseph?
- 8:53Joseph has been listen Joseph has been prepositioned to meet
- 9:00this Butler and Baker. Prepositions.
- 9:03God knew all this unfolding. Joseph's learning it a little at
- 9:07a time. And it says in verse four, when
- 9:10the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, not only was
- 9:13he prepositioned, but he was placed in the position to
- 9:16oversee these men. God is setting this up.
- 9:22He served them it, says verse 4. And so they were in custody for
- 9:28a while. Joseph's in charge?
- 9:32But he serves them. Don't miss that.
- 9:34You might want to mark that he's in charge.
- 9:37He's in a place of authority, but he chooses to serve them.
- 9:43This is a place of learning how to care for others, even while
- 9:45he himself is suffering great hardship.
- 9:50I know at times suffering and pain and trials can stop a
- 9:55person from serving the Lord. Sometimes it's of necessity.
- 10:00For a season, you're incapable and you're healing and you're
- 10:04you're having to process this new reality.
- 10:07And for a season, however, it's also possible that you can hurt
- 10:13and serve at the same time. It's a healthy place to be.
- 10:18You can hurt and serve others at the same time.
- 10:24It needs to be said, and it also needs to be learned.
- 10:28That others, they are waiting for Someone Like You to serve
- 10:34them, even though you're in a tough spot, in a difficult spot.
- 10:39You understand now that the warning in the New Testament
- 10:42about not allowing bitterness to take root in your heart, because
- 10:46bitterness is a defiling agent. It's not a helpful, it's not
- 10:50helpful to you, and it's not helpful to the people around
- 10:53you. It's defiling.
- 10:55It's dirtying. It it, it diminishes the
- 10:58holiness and the mercy and the grace and the character of God
- 11:01through your life. It would be easy if you're
- 11:05thrown into prison, falsely accused to become bitter and to
- 11:09be upset about it the rest of your life.
- 11:11And that becomes your new identity.
- 11:13I don't belong here. I don't belong here.
- 11:15I don't belong here. I don't belong here.
- 11:17And you say that a million times.
- 11:18You begin to live out that reality.
- 11:21Except that you can you you can come to terms with the reality
- 11:26you don't belong there and then turn it around and go.
- 11:29But God has me here, and that's a turning point.
- 11:34Even in great hardship, Joseph is serving them now.
- 11:40I've noticed over the years when it relates to servanthood,
- 11:46especially here in a church where we value servanthood that.
- 11:51The pastor, it starts with me. I'm to be the chief servant of
- 11:54this church. This is not like the world where
- 11:59you climb the ladder and the higher you get, the less work
- 12:02you do. That's not the way of the world.
- 12:05The way that, I mean, that's the way of the world.
- 12:06It's not the way of the church. The way of the Church is the
- 12:09ladder is down, and the more you.
- 12:14The more responsibility you have, the more service you do.
- 12:16I mean, if you're climbing the ladder in the church, that means
- 12:19you want to serve more, not less.
- 12:21And the pastor is to be the chief servant and those serving
- 12:24in leadership are to be Co laborers in that service.
- 12:27But here's what I've seen over the years and if you are serving
- 12:31in this church, I want to warn you about it.
- 12:32So you know ahead of time, I have noticed over the years that
- 12:36positions and titles can ruin a person.
- 12:41They just take a person out where there is this sense of
- 12:45starting out well. And I want to serve the Lord and
- 12:48just tell me what to do. And here I am, brother.
- 12:50I'll be at every service and I'll just do whatever you But
- 12:52but there is this ulterior motive, spoken or unspoken, that
- 12:57the more I serve, the more I'll be noticed.
- 12:59And the more I'm noticed, the more authority I'll be given and
- 13:01the more authority I could be given.
- 13:03Then I can tell other people to serve.
- 13:06And when titles get thrown around, I mean, you have folks
- 13:09that send a serve, serve and work hard.
- 13:11But once they're getting in a place of authority, that
- 13:14expectation now is no longer serving.
- 13:16But now there's a new expectation.
- 13:18Well, don't you know who I am? I'm like, yeah, bro, you're my
- 13:23brother and the Lord. No, no, no.
- 13:25I'm much more than your brother and and you change your voice
- 13:28and all that you know. In the world I I experienced
- 13:31this. I don't know if you have, but
- 13:32it's very I I remember watching this multiple times where you
- 13:36would be working and in the position I I was a dispatcher.
- 13:39So I had a lot of people working side by side.
- 13:41We're all working together, all doing the same job, all
- 13:44supporting one another. Man making it work.
- 13:46Teamwork makes the dream work. All of that, man.
- 13:49That was it. But then along the way, so and
- 13:52so didn't show up anymore. They didn't show up in the chair
- 13:55next to you. They showed up at the office
- 13:57with a new polo shirt. That's what they had.
- 14:00They weren't wearing what we used to wear, tshirts.
- 14:02Now they've got the polo with the collar and a little name
- 14:05badge. They had to be a really long
- 14:07name. Dutch, because they were
- 14:08assistant assistant, assistant assistant course, sort of, kind
- 14:11of junior supervisor. Whoo.
- 14:14Don't you know who I am? Yeah, bro, you were sitting next
- 14:17to me yesterday and I helped you do your job when you didn't know
- 14:19how to do it. I know who you are.
- 14:21Oh, no. I am your boss.
- 14:24I'm like, bro, you're a junior, junior, junior supervisor that
- 14:27doesn't know how to do that job. What makes me think you know how
- 14:29to That's your inside voice. Your outside voice is yes, you
- 14:33are my boss now. You know because titles, they
- 14:36just have a way of if you don't know.
- 14:39So what happens when in the church, you know what happens in
- 14:41the church. There are titles.
- 14:42There are recognition in the sense of what level of service
- 14:45and responsibility you have. But you know what God how God
- 14:48gives titles. He prepares you for them.
- 14:51He prepares. You know how he prepares you.
- 14:54Through challenges and difficulties, he gets you ready
- 14:58for him. He wants you ready for him.
- 15:00He wants you to serve well. He wants you to love him and
- 15:03love people. He doesn't want a title to ruin
- 15:06you. He doesn't want to see you in a
- 15:08position of authority like Joseph here.
- 15:10And then once you have authority, you start lording
- 15:12over people. So much so that God says, you
- 15:15know what, don't Lord over people.
- 15:17The Bible says that straight up. That is not God's will for
- 15:22anyone in authority to throw titles.
- 15:24As a matter of fact, you know this as well as I do.
- 15:26But when someone has to throw their title around to get you to
- 15:29do something, they're not leading you and they're not
- 15:32serving you. They're bossing you.
- 15:35And you know, you don't respond too well to bosses.
- 15:39You love working for people that serve you and work alongside of
- 15:43you and try to make your life better and create an environment
- 15:46so you can be successful. Because they realize if you're
- 15:49successful, they're successful and we're successful.
- 15:52That's a beautiful thing, man. I don't know how many of you,
- 15:57but I certainly worked for a few.
- 15:58Or guys like, like, I know you're my boss.
- 16:00You don't need to tell me every day.
- 16:02I know. I know you're my boss.
- 16:05You don't. You don't need to let everybody
- 16:07know. We all know.
- 16:09So why don't you just do your job?
- 16:12I'll do mine, you do yours. And in the church, the way that
- 16:16looks in the church is hey, look, church, just do your job.
- 16:20Love God with all your heart, soul and mind.
- 16:23And love your neighbors yourself.
- 16:25It doesn't matter what role and what title.
- 16:28Don't let titles. Here's my point.
- 16:30Don't let titles ruin you. Because if a title ruins you, a
- 16:34lot of people are going to get hurt.
- 16:36People that are looking to you, people that are hurting.
- 16:40People that now the chief Butler and the Baker were in a place of
- 16:45great esteem. Now they're experiencing what
- 16:49Joseph's experiencing in the same place I reminded of Second
- 16:55Corinthians chapter one. You know the Paul writes to the
- 16:59church in Corinth, and he says that God is the God of all
- 17:02comfort. Who comforts us and all our
- 17:06tribulation? Why?
- 17:07So that we might be able to comfort others that are going
- 17:11through the same thing here. They are going through the same
- 17:15thing that Joseph is going through and he's ready to serve
- 17:19them. Mark Mark chapter 10 if you want
- 17:21to jot it down in verse 45, says for even the son of man did not
- 17:25come to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom
- 17:29for many. And Joseph here is serving.
- 17:33I think his service came from a deep place of faith in God's
- 17:39will for his life. We often equate God's will for
- 17:44our lives as only the best things that happened to us.
- 17:48But everything that comes to us has been father filtered.
- 17:52The pain, the difficulty. This is these are times when
- 17:56we're falsely accused, when we're slander, gossip, whatever.
- 17:59These are times, these difficulties where the devil
- 18:04sees an open door and he comes in whispers or screams at you.
- 18:08Where's your God now? Is this how God rewards you?
- 18:13Joseph Coat of many colors, Dad's favorite?
- 18:17Is this how God rewards faithfulness and faith?
- 18:20Throwing you into prison, putting you in a place of.
- 18:24Great distress. If those were around Joseph,
- 18:28maybe his brothers could say the same thing.
- 18:30Oh, I thought your God was faithful.
- 18:32I thought your God cared. I thought I'd look at you and
- 18:35you're going through things and you can hear the unbeliever at
- 18:38work, can't you? You're going things, going
- 18:39through things that are worse than I've ever experienced.
- 18:42That's your God. And they become mockers.
- 18:47But through his service. Listen through his service.
- 18:51Joseph was saying, my God hasn't changed.
- 18:55He's with me right here, right now, and I'm going to take this
- 19:00opportunity to serve him even in this prison he hasn't changed.
- 19:08In verse 5 again it says. Then the Butler and the Baker of
- 19:12the king of Egypt who were confined in the prison, dreamed
- 19:14a dream. Both of them.
- 19:16Each man's dream in one night, and each man's dream with its
- 19:19own interpretation. Joseph came into them in the
- 19:22morning and looked at them and saw that they were sad.
- 19:26So he asked Pharaoh's officer, who were with him in the custody
- 19:28of his Lord's house, saying, Why do you look so sad today?
- 19:32And they said to him, we each have a dream to dream, and
- 19:35there's no interpreter of it. And Joseph said to them, Do not
- 19:37interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.
- 19:44Another characteristic of Joseph here in the midst of his
- 19:47distress. Is Joseph's in a very difficult
- 19:50situation himself, but he still notices sadness and sorrow
- 19:54around him. He has he cares.
- 19:59And because he cares, he observes.
- 20:02And because he cares and observes, he sees that they're
- 20:04troubled. And when he sees that they're
- 20:06troubled, he asked them how they're doing, what's wrong, and
- 20:09it reminded me of Nehemiah. Nehemiah did the same thing when
- 20:12the Messenger came to him. And he asked them, hey, what's
- 20:15going on? And he asked them, knowing that
- 20:18the answer could have moved him to some action.
- 20:21And he asked the question, what's going on in Jerusalem?
- 20:24Why? Because he cared.
- 20:27But I I see a connection here in Joseph's life, in Nehemiah's
- 20:31life of this asking because here, here's the thing, A lot of
- 20:34times people are avoided and questions are avoided simply
- 20:40because, you know, if you ask the question, there's going to
- 20:42be some answer that you're going to have to deal with and you
- 20:46don't want to deal with it. And so it was a Christian You
- 20:50avoid certain people. And if somebody does come up
- 20:52you, you feel prompted by the Spears, Are you OK today, you
- 20:55guys? I don't really want to ask that
- 20:57right now because I already know they're not OK and I don't want
- 21:00to deal with it. And friend, I think that's sin.
- 21:04I don't think that's OK. You don't have, you don't have
- 21:08the choice to choose who comes to prison with you, man.
- 21:11If the Butler and the Baker show up to prison, you need to ask
- 21:13them how they're doing. If somebody shows up into your
- 21:16life or you find out, you bump into somebody, you got to, you
- 21:19got to care enough to observe, to ask and thank you.
- 21:23You know what? Tell me.
- 21:24Go ahead and tell me. I know.
- 21:26I know a God that interprets dreams.
- 21:27So just tell me what's going on. Give me the dreams.
- 21:31I mean, Joseph doesn't even really know what he's going to
- 21:33do with the information yet, but he's willing to do it.
- 21:37I was sharing with our team today and our staff DeVos and
- 21:40and our discipleship time that I believe and and I believe it's
- 21:44all my heart. I believe it's always been the
- 21:46same. But we're alive now that the
- 21:48changing force on the earth today in the culture
- 21:51environment, the political environment, the economic
- 21:53environment, the changing power, the force that will make
- 21:57progress and move the church forward in the world today is
- 22:01the agape love of God. It is otherworldly,
- 22:05supernatural, unexplainable, not the kind of love that we can
- 22:11build up. Like we can pretend to care.
- 22:13That's not what I'm talking about.
- 22:15And we can partly care. That's not what I'm talking
- 22:18about. I'm talking about the self
- 22:20sacrificial love that's displayed by God the Father
- 22:24where the Bible says that he so loved this sin.
- 22:27Reject God rejecting world. He's so loved that he gave his
- 22:31only begotten Son that whosoever will believe in him would not
- 22:34perish but have everlasting life.
- 22:36The kind of agape love that cares steps into lives.
- 22:40The kind of agape love it great personal sacrifice, time,
- 22:45talents, treasures that would step into someone's life and
- 22:49make yourself available not for your name, not for a church's
- 22:52name, but for the name of Jesus Christ on the earth today.
- 22:56You can't argue with the agape love you can't explain.
- 22:58People get mad at it. People don't know.
- 23:01They don't know how. They don't know how to explain
- 23:05the kind of love that God flows through his church.
- 23:08And there is no other, no other people, no other people group,
- 23:12no other entity, no other organization that displays the
- 23:15agape love. None.
- 23:16It's only the church. Only the church can walk in the
- 23:20agape love that let me show you, give you a real peek of the go
- 23:24over to 1st Corinthians chapter 13.
- 23:26Because long before 1st Corinthians 13 is written.
- 23:29Joseph's walking in this agape love.
- 23:32He's in charge. He's the head of the prison.
- 23:34He doesn't need to do anything for these guys.
- 23:37You can just say, yeah, you go over there and be chained to the
- 23:39wall or whatever. I don't know how it was.
- 23:41It was. I'm sure it was a horrible
- 23:43experience. But he's already living this out
- 23:45before it was ever written. Why?
- 23:47Because the spirit of God is ministering in Joseph's life.
- 23:51He he's, he is, he is living in Joseph's life.
- 23:55And you have a greater relationship with the Holy
- 23:58Spirit than Joseph ever had. Notice First Corinthians chapter
- 24:0213, where we pick up in the description in verse four.
- 24:08It says love suffers long and is kind.
- 24:12Love does not envy. Love does not parade itself, is
- 24:14not puffed up. Love does not behave rudely,
- 24:18does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil, does
- 24:22not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth.
- 24:25Bears all thing, believes all thing, hopes all things, endures
- 24:29all things. Love never fails.
- 24:34And this is Joseph's life here. He cares, and I love to see that
- 24:42in our church. I love to hear that in our
- 24:44church. I love to hear the testimonies
- 24:46of God using you in people's lives for no other reason, no
- 24:51other reason than you care and you care enough to observe and
- 25:00and your observations of Holy Spirit says here move, act,
- 25:04love, care, serve, speak, invite them into your life.
- 25:08Sometimes you need to carefully invite yourselves in their lives
- 25:13and be open to be used of God. I know we use words and phrases
- 25:18and we have vision statements and axiom statements we all this
- 25:21information to help define us. But I mean, really think about
- 25:25it. When disciple and send our words
- 25:28of love to take the church. And I was talking to someone
- 25:32today about this, it just seems like the church is so scared by
- 25:35what's everything's happening in the world that they've taken on.
- 25:38And and maybe you have and I just let those just pray about
- 25:41this, but you're just taking this isolationist view toward
- 25:44the world. Like just protect everything and
- 25:46make sure we all protect and we just like the world needs you
- 25:50and then the world doesn't need you.
- 25:51Hiding in a cave somewhere like Elijah, The world doesn't need
- 25:56you up. You know, hiding butter and
- 25:58guns. I don't know why butter, but
- 25:59butter and guns and food and you know as much toilet paper as you
- 26:04can get from Costco. So when the end of the world
- 26:07comes, you like the world needs you right where you are, caring,
- 26:13observing and helping in Jesus name.
- 26:18That's how you were reached. Many of us were reached because
- 26:20somebody cared enough to call us, reach out to us, not give up
- 26:23on us. Invite us to church.
- 26:25Give us a book back in the day. Give us a tape, a cassette tape.
- 26:30Listen to this. Why would I listen to that?
- 26:31What kind of music is all? It's not music.
- 26:33It's a guy teaching the Bible. What you could take your
- 26:37cassette tape back, bro. I don't need that.
- 26:40But what do I need? I needed to hear the love of God
- 26:43through the gifting of a pastor teacher, teaching the word where
- 26:48man, he cared enough. So care because here they are.
- 26:51They have dreams. They're already troubled.
- 26:54Now they're troubled by dreams. They don't know what their
- 26:56future is. Joseph steps in.
- 26:58I love this verse 9 Now the chief Butler told him his dream
- 27:02and said beholden. My dream of vine was before me,
- 27:05and in the vine there were three branches.
- 27:06It was as though it butted. It blossoms shot forth, its
- 27:09clusters brought forth ripe grapes.
- 27:12Then Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and
- 27:15pressed them into Pharaoh's cup. Placed the cup in Pharaoh's
- 27:17hand, Joseph said to him. This is the interpretation of
- 27:21it. The three branches are three
- 27:22days, and within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head
- 27:25and restore you to the place. Then you will put Pharaoh's cup
- 27:31in his hand, according to the former manner, when you were his
- 27:33Butler. But Remember Me when it is well
- 27:36with you, and please show me kindness to me, make mention of
- 27:40me to Pharaoh, and Get Me Out of this house.
- 27:42For indeed I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews.
- 27:45And also I've done nothing here that they should put me in to
- 27:49the dungeon. The dream is a beautiful 1.
- 27:52The interpretation's beautiful and you have to step back and
- 27:55go. Wait a minute.
- 27:56Why would God bring. Why would God bring the Butler
- 27:59into prison next to Joseph? Have a troubled face match up
- 28:03with Joseph's caring to hear the dream.
- 28:06God gives them the instant interpretation.
- 28:08Why would God all do this? To get these words out of
- 28:10Joseph's mouth. You ready?
- 28:12Just mark them. But Remember Me when it's well
- 28:15with you. All this is going on just to get
- 28:19Joseph to mouth a really deep desire in his heart.
- 28:25What was that desire? He wants out of prison.
- 28:28Doesn't surprise you, does it? I would too.
- 28:32He's faithful. He's embracing his life.
- 28:35He's serving, He's caring, He's observing, He's stepping into
- 28:39life. All of the characteristics that
- 28:42you would expect from a man that loves God and he wants to get
- 28:45the heck out of prison. All this is being arranged in
- 28:50this case, to get these words out of his mouth.
- 28:54Just Remember Me, bro. Where there's a sense now by
- 28:58saying that to the Butler, where Joseph's heart wakes up every
- 29:02day. I wonder if today is the day
- 29:05when the Butler remembers me not.
- 29:09I wonder if today is the day God remembers me.
- 29:12But I wonder if the Butler remember because the Butler's
- 29:14here and he's going to be with Pharaoh.
- 29:15And I wonder, I wonder, I wonder notice the next dream. 16 When
- 29:20the cheap Baker saw the interpretation was good.
- 29:23He's like, I would also had a dream.
- 29:25And in it were three white baskets on my head in the
- 29:27uppermost basket. There were all kinds of baked
- 29:29goods for Pharaoh. The birds ate him out of the
- 29:31basket on my head. So Joseph answered and said,
- 29:35this is the interpretation. The three baskets are three days
- 29:38and the Baker's going, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 29:40Within three days, Farrell would lift off your head from you and
- 29:43hang you on a tree. No, no, no.
- 29:46Go back, go back, and the birds will eat your flesh from you.
- 29:50And now what came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh's
- 29:55birthday, he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted
- 29:58up the head of the chief Butler and of the chief Baker among his
- 30:00servants. He restored to the chief Butler
- 30:03to his Butler ship, again placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand.
- 30:06But he hanged the chief Baker, as Joseph had interpreted to
- 30:09them. Yet the chief Butler did not
- 30:11remember Joseph, but forgot him. Why the Baker dream?
- 30:16Why the interpretation? It wasn't to get the words, but
- 30:20Remember Me out of his mouth. For the Baker.
- 30:23God allowed all these circumstances for Joseph to
- 30:27reveal a depth of courage to speak the truth.
- 30:32This would have been very, very hard to share.
- 30:36I wonder if Joseph was thinking. I wonder what Great.
- 30:39Oh, it's going to be great. Just the interpretation is going
- 30:41to be just like the Butler. But it wasn't.
- 30:43It was a very hard word to share again.
- 30:48God preparing Joseph for the future.
- 30:52God preparing Joseph for the future.
- 30:56Being able to speak the truth. Being able to tell the truth.
- 31:02Remember in Proverbs chapter 27 and verse six, I'll read two in
- 31:06the New Living Translation. It says wounds from a sincere
- 31:09friend are better than many kisses of the enemy.
- 31:14The Bible says that we're to speak the truth and love where
- 31:17to be honest with one another. Truthfulness is a sign of
- 31:20closeness to the Lord. A person willing to cling to the
- 31:24truth no matter the consequence, is a man or a woman of maturity
- 31:28and growing maturity. In Psalm 86, verse 11 it says,
- 31:31teach me your way, oh Lord, I will walk in your truth.
- 31:35Truth is a mark of the believer. Truth is a mark of a follower of
- 31:40Christ. In Psalm 119, verse 30 it says I
- 31:43have chosen the way of truth and I commend you, Church.
- 31:47I encourage you in the decisions and the things in your life
- 31:51right now. Choose the way of truth.
- 31:54No deception, no pretending, no partial truth.
- 31:58So partial truth is a lie. Choose truth.
- 32:03Choose honesty. Let it be the mark of Christ in
- 32:07and through you. Well, the we read in verse 20
- 32:11that the interpretations come through true.
- 32:14Pharaoh has a major birthday party, was customary.
- 32:16He lives so both these men he restores the Butler.
- 32:19He has the Baker hang just as God revealed to Joseph.
- 32:23Why? Because God always keeps his
- 32:26word. He always keeps his word, the
- 32:30word of the Lord. You can count on it.
- 32:33My word, I would hope you can count on it, but not 100%,
- 32:37because I'm not a perfect man. But the word of God, you can
- 32:40count on 100%. God never lies.
- 32:42No variation, No shadow of turning.
- 32:44You can trust the Bible, You can trust it implicitly.
- 32:48You can entrust it explicitly. You can trust it 100% of the
- 32:51time. The word of man?
- 32:53Not so much. In Joshua chapter 21, verse 45,
- 32:59listen it says not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord
- 33:03had spoken to the House of Israel.
- 33:05All came to pass. Isn't that great?
- 33:07That's going to be stood over your life one day.
- 33:09It's true of your life right now.
- 33:11There's not a word of God that has failed, failed you in your
- 33:14life, not one. Even if circumstances make it
- 33:18look that way. I'm telling you Joseph is
- 33:20experiencing the faithfulness of God even in prison.
- 33:24Not only that, Psalm 138, verse two, it says I will worship
- 33:27towards your holy temple and praise your name for your loving
- 33:31kindness and your truth. Listen, this is what the Bible
- 33:33says. God has magnified His word above
- 33:36his name. That's how important God's word
- 33:38is. You've magnified your word above
- 33:41all your name. Second Peter, Chapter one, verse
- 33:4319 that we have the prophetic word confirmed.
- 33:48You can trust the word of God, yet you can't always trust man.
- 33:56Your trust always has to be in the Lord.
- 33:58Notice in Joseph's life again everything came to pass.
- 34:02The God said but the Butler did not remember Joseph verse 23 but
- 34:08forgot him. It doesn't even have to be like
- 34:16negative motives. It could be he's all excited.
- 34:19It could be that he's excited to be restored and he's alive and
- 34:23he's getting on with life. And he forgot Joseph.
- 34:27Joseph wasn't a part of his life for very long and he forgot him.
- 34:32When you put yourself in Joseph's place for a moment,
- 34:35here he is telling the truth, telling the Butler the good news
- 34:38and all that. He asked was that the Butler
- 34:40mentioned him to Pharaoh, but when the Butler was released, he
- 34:44forgot him. Joseph was probably excited the
- 34:50first few days after he heard got word that the dreams that he
- 34:55interpreted were accurate 100% and I'm sure he got excited.
- 34:59Okay, now the Butler. Now the Butler's going to
- 35:01remember I'm out any day I'm out any day I'm out.
- 35:04Any day I'm out. Any day I'm, I'm out.
- 35:10Any, any day now. Any week now, any month now, in
- 35:18a year now, he was forgotten. But God, he hasn't forgotten.
- 35:27Joseph the Butler did, but God didn't.
- 35:33And this is a serious lesson. I want to show it to you.
- 35:34Turn over to Psalm Chapter 20 with me.
- 35:38This is one of the things, specifically, that Joseph is
- 35:40learning. This is why it's so important,
- 35:44friends, to be in the Bible every day.
- 35:46Reading it, praying, every day is with an open Bible.
- 35:49Because you may come across, it may be the appointed time for
- 35:53you to come across the scripture that reveals the lesson that
- 35:57you're learning, where you finally get clarity or you get a
- 36:01deeper understanding. You stumble across the passage
- 36:04and you're like, man, that's me. Thank you, Lord, for that
- 36:07revelation. The revelation won't come if
- 36:10you're not in the word. The revelation won't come and
- 36:13won't have confirmation if you're not in prayer with the
- 36:15Lord. And I don't just mean sitting
- 36:17down at the table with a cup of coffee.
- 36:20I mean man being in prayer, being in relationship, being in
- 36:23a communication, Long prayer, short prayers, loud prayers,
- 36:27soft prayers, prayers in your mind, prayers when you don't
- 36:30know. Desperation, comfort, surrender
- 36:33this. Listen to what he's listen,
- 36:34Notice what he's learning. Here in Psalm 20.
- 36:37In verse 6, Psalm 20, verse six. Now I know that the Lord saves
- 36:42his anointed. He will answer him from his holy
- 36:45heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.
- 36:48Yes Lord, yes Lord, some trust in Chariots for seven and some
- 36:55in horses and some in butlers. You could add that.
- 37:01I mean don't add to the word, but you could put that there.
- 37:03Some trust in Chariots and horses and butlers, but we will
- 37:10remember the name of the Lord our God.
- 37:16It's foolish to trust in butlers, as trustworthy as
- 37:21butlers might be. We need to learn to trust in the
- 37:26Lord, no matter what comes our way.
- 37:30And God knows that we need to trust him.
- 37:33And listen, some of you won't like this because it's the
- 37:38answer to the problem in your life.
- 37:41You're not going to like it. So be prepared.
- 37:44God allowed the Butler to forget Joseph.
- 37:51God allowed it. In that silence, Joseph was
- 37:55brought to a place of decision once again in the prison,
- 38:01falsely accused in part of hers. House sold as a slave, thrown in
- 38:09a pit for dead. It was in that silence that
- 38:16Joseph needed to decide once again will I walk away from the
- 38:20Lord, or why I press in? Is this the one that I'm giving
- 38:26up now? After all, I've got this series
- 38:30of disappointments and offenses I have with God, and I've got
- 38:35through them, and the Lord's helped me.
- 38:37But now I got another one. And it was in that silence that
- 38:42he needed to press into the Lord.
- 38:44It would be another two years in this hellhole of a prison,
- 38:50living with the pain and injustice.
- 38:54But not only that. Joseph was learning not to trust
- 38:57in man. I am not advocating.
- 39:00Please don't misunderstand me that we don't have trust
- 39:02relationships with each other. Of course we do.
- 39:06The deeper the trust, the deeper the relationship.
- 39:08That's not what I'm referring to.
- 39:10Every real relationship is built on trust.
- 39:13What I'm saying here and what I'm seeing in Joseph's life and
- 39:16what I'm learning in my life, that my hope and my trust cannot
- 39:20be in man. It must be in God.
- 39:25That my primary trust relationship is with God.
- 39:27Again, let me give to you in Psalm 118 verse eight.
- 39:31It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in
- 39:35man. It is better to trust in the
- 39:37Lord than to put confidence in Princess.
- 39:42I mean, we could do we do a Bible study just on this.
- 39:45It's it's better to trust in God.
- 39:48It's better than trusting in man and even Princess who have
- 39:53authority and have money and have resources.
- 39:55It is better to trust in God than in to trust in man, because
- 40:01there is the temptation in the possibility.
- 40:03That if the Butler did remember him and did tell Pharaoh that
- 40:07the Butler would receive all the glory for the work that God did,
- 40:11it's a possibility. And like Joseph, we need to
- 40:18learn this lesson. You're some of you are learning
- 40:20it right now. You want to jump out of your
- 40:21chair. That's me.
- 40:22That's me. And the Lord is still faithful
- 40:25to you. This is a source of much
- 40:28disappointment in our lives. We choose to trust a man, a
- 40:33woman, someone you would expect that we can trust, and they let
- 40:35us down. And you add to that your
- 40:39everyday issues. You add to that your unmet
- 40:42expectations. And we're offended and we're
- 40:46frustrated and we're angered. And the enemy loves to divide us
- 40:51from each other and from God through offenses.
- 40:55And it's just better to trust in the Lord because he'll never let
- 40:58you down. And Joseph's waiting and praying
- 41:01and hoping. And he refused to give up on
- 41:03God. He refused to throw in it.
- 41:05It it says in verse one. It came to pass of chapter 41 at
- 41:09the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream.
- 41:11And behold, he stood by a river. Whoa, wait a minute.
- 41:13Pharaoh had a dream. Interesting.
- 41:18And you can read ahead. We'll get to it in our next
- 41:20study. But you can read ahead.
- 41:22Dreams connected with other dreams.
- 41:24Oh, there's a guy. There's a guy that can speak
- 41:28forth Interpretation of Dreams, and now Joseph's connected with
- 41:35Pharaoh. Imagine that the kid thrown into
- 41:39the pit is going to stand before Pharaoh, the leader of the known
- 41:44world. You just never know how God is
- 41:47going to, where he's going to place you, who he's going to
- 41:49place you in front of. You just need to be ready.
- 41:52Just be ready. God's plan is awesome for your
- 41:56life, King. God's plan brings forth life and
- 42:00joy and relationships and brings families together and people
- 42:04together and binds us together. So Lord, we we asked teach us to
- 42:09wait church, don't panic in this situation.
- 42:13Don't give up too early you know.
- 42:16I know we complain we because we don't see the end.
- 42:19That's our we don't. We complain and we murmur and we
- 42:22don't like it because we don't see the end.
- 42:25We don't see that God is working.
- 42:26We don't remember that he is good and that he loves me.
- 42:28And these are two foundational truths that you must cling to.
- 42:32Two foundational truths that you must cling to.
- 42:35Number one, I know that God is good.
- 42:39And #2, I know that God is love. And if you hang on to those two
- 42:44things, it'll get you through anything.
- 42:46I know that God is good. I don't feel it right now.
- 42:48I don't see it right now, but I know it.
- 42:51All things are working for good. He loves me because without
- 42:55Christ, without you're without hope, you know, without Christ,
- 42:59without God in this world, it's a most miserable place to be.
- 43:03There's no meaning, no rhyme or reason to anything when you
- 43:06don't have a relationship with the living God.
- 43:09But to receive Jesus is to have peace with God.
- 43:12And then that peace begins to rule in your hearts and your
- 43:15minds through Christ Jesus. And that what?
- 43:17That's what makes the Christian different.
- 43:19That's what opens us for the agape love of God, because we
- 43:23trust God. It's an attitude, it's an
- 43:26acceptance. And we thank God even for that.
- 43:32And we learn not to trust in man and put our hope in man, but to
- 43:36trust in the Lord. Listen, it is better to trust in
- 43:39the Lord than to put confidence in man.
- 43:41And it's better to trust in the Lord, to put confidence in
- 43:44Princess. Amen.
- 43:46Lord, we admit to you the truth of your word, and we pray it
- 43:49into our hearts tonight. We don't want to live like we
- 43:53don't have any hope. We don't want to live to a
- 43:55watching world like we think. You're not in control and you're
- 43:59not sovereign. You're not on the throne, and
- 44:01you don't know what you're doing.
- 44:03We don't want to cave to the mocking words of the world, or
- 44:07the mocking words of Friends, or the mocking words of TikTok, or
- 44:11the mocking words of YouTube, or the mocking words of Twitter or
- 44:15Instagram or Facebook, or that e-mail, that letter, the mocking
- 44:22words of the devil, our own flesh shaming, living under
- 44:27shame and guilt and condemnation.
- 44:29God, we asked for a fresh wind of your presence to be felt in
- 44:35here today. Forgive us for trusting man.
- 44:42Forgive us for looking to man as the solution to the problem
- 44:47that's before us. Forgive us, God as a church, for
- 44:52wanting to solve spiritual problems with human centered
- 44:59solutions and teach us God not to put our hope in man, but to
- 45:06put our hope in you, God, the author and the finisher of our
- 45:10faith, who for the joy that was set before you endured the
- 45:14cross, despising the shame. And you've sat down at the right
- 45:19hand of the Father in a place of finality and rest of authority
- 45:26and rest. And as we're praying tonight, if
- 45:29you're here and you never given your life to Jesus or you're
- 45:32there listening to me from afar, I invite you to receive the Lord
- 45:37Jesus Christ as your savior today.
- 45:39That you would know that you. That you know that eternity is
- 45:44yours. And God, like he, loves you and
- 45:45has given his Son to forgive you of your sins.
- 45:48And so if you're here in the room, I want to give you a
- 45:50chance. If that's you, you say, Ed, I
- 45:52need to. I need to follow God with my
- 45:53life. I want to give my life to
- 45:55Christ. Tonight.
- 45:56Would you just stand to your feet?
- 45:57I want to pray with you that today would be the day that you
- 46:00finalize that decision. Now, in this moment that you say
- 46:05here I am, God take my life, it belongs to you.
- 46:09I receive the forgiveness of my sins.
- 46:13And it's true. Every single one of us have
- 46:16sinned and fallen short of the perfection of God, the glory of
- 46:20God, the holiness of God, and yet still He invites us into
- 46:24relationship. He doesn't despise us, or throw
- 46:27us away, or ignore us, or give us the silent treatment God
- 46:31invites us to Himself. Anyone here want to give you
- 46:36that opportunity before we leave, like there's no need for
- 46:39you to keep living your own way. There's no need for you to leave
- 46:44here the same or actually worse than when you first came in
- 46:50because now once again, another time you reject Christ.
- 46:55It's like, you know, whenever I say that people are always like
- 46:58I didn't reject Christ, well, Jesus did.
- 47:00He said it this way. If you're not for him, you're
- 47:03against him. And it's a call to commitment.
- 47:10Perhaps you're watching online right now and you know, maybe
- 47:12listening on the radio and and God's giving you that same
- 47:15invitation. You could be even downstairs in
- 47:17the cafe down there at the Res or in the overflow.
- 47:21And the Lord knows because he loves you, he's got your
- 47:23attention and he wants you to follow him.
- 47:27That's His word to you today, to follow him.
- 47:30The Bible says if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus
- 47:34and you believe in your heart that God raised him from the
- 47:35dead, you will be saved. Why?
- 47:37Because with the heart 1 believes to righteousness and
- 47:40with the mouth confession is made unto salvation as you can
- 47:44just ask God. God, forgive me of my sins.
- 47:47I want to follow you with my life and he'll hear that prayer.
