- 0:05Welcome back to the USA Cabinet Store Remodeling
- 0:09Podcast, the show where we turn remodeling overwhelm
- 0:12into a plan you can actually act on. I'm Chris,
- 0:16and as always, I've got our design and project
- 0:19strategist, Jessica, with me. Today, we are tackling
- 0:23one of the most requested topics we get, bathroom
- 0:26remodeling ideas for 2026. Jessica. The bathroom
- 0:31has officially dethroned the kitchen as the room
- 0:34people obsess over, hasn't it? It really has,
- 0:36Chris. And here's the headline that surprises
- 0:39everyone. The bathroom is now the most personal
- 0:42room in the house. The cold, all -white, gray
- 0:46everything look is done. In 2026, people want
- 0:49warmth, wellness, and finishes that feel intentional.
- 0:53But the part I love is that good bathroom ideas
- 0:56are not just about looks. The smart ones actually
- 0:59pay you back. A mid -range bathroom remodel now
- 1:02returns up to about 80 % of its cost at resale.
- 1:07That is among the strongest returns we have seen
- 1:09for this project since 2007. 80%. That is kitchen
- 1:13-level return in a much smaller room. Okay, let's
- 1:17give people the money picture first, because
- 1:19that is where everyone starts. What does a bathroom
- 1:22remodel actually cost in 2026? So, the national
- 1:26average for a full remodel sits around $16 ,500.
- 1:31Across the projects we price, most homeowners
- 1:33land somewhere between $8 ,000 and $45 ,000,
- 1:37depending on size, materials, and where they
- 1:39live. Prices rose about 4 to 6 percent this year,
- 1:43and there are two reasons — a skilled trade labor
- 1:46shortage and tariffs. There is now a 25 percent
- 1:50federal tariff on imported cabinets and vanities,
- 1:53and a jump to 50 % is scheduled for 2027. So
- 1:57if you have been thinking about it, waiting does
- 1:59not make it cheaper. And there is a number people
- 2:01always forget, the contingency. Walk us through
- 2:04that. This is the one I will not let a client
- 2:06skip. About one in three remodels uncovers hidden
- 2:10water damage the moment demo starts. Rot, mold,
- 2:16failed waterproofing behind the tile. So you
- 2:19hold back 15 to 20 percent of your budget for
- 2:21surprises, not the old 10 percent. It is not
- 2:25pessimism. It is planning. The remodels that
- 2:28blow up are almost never about design. They are
- 2:31about not budgeting for what is behind the walls.
- 2:34Smart. Now, if someone is remodeling to sell,
- 2:38where should the money go? What gives the best
- 2:40return? There is a clear top five. The biggest
- 2:44is a tub -to -walk -in shower conversion that
- 2:46lands at 75 to 85 percent. Then a new vanity
- 2:50and countertop, 70 to 80. Updated lighting, also
- 2:5570 to 80. Fresh tile and flooring, 65 to 75.
- 3:00And a modern toilet and faucets, 65 to 75. Small
- 3:04spend, but it fixes that old bathroom feeling
- 3:06instantly. Now compare that to heated floors,
- 3:10which return only 40 to 50 percent. That does
- 3:13not make heated floors a bad idea. It just means
- 3:15you buy them because you will love them, not
- 3:18because they pay you back. That distinction is
- 3:21gold. Let's get into the actual ideas. You grouped
- 3:2421 ideas into six categories. Start us with the
- 3:27big impact stuff, layout and showers. Layout
- 3:30and shower is where you get the most payoff,
- 3:33because changing the footprint changes everything.
- 3:36The benchmark layout of 2026 is the curbless
- 3:39walk -in wet room. You recess the subfloor, add
- 3:42a linear drain, and the tile runs straight in
- 3:45with no curb to step over. It looks open, it
- 3:49is easier to clean, and it reads as both modern
- 3:51and accessible. A few hard -won tips from people
- 3:55who built one. Put the controls within reach
- 3:57of the entry so you are not stepping into a cold
- 4:00blast. Pair any rain head with a handheld and
- 4:03go bigger than feels right in the showroom. A
- 4:063x3 stall looks fine on display and feels cramped
- 4:09every single day. Then add frameless glass, which
- 4:13costs about $1 ,200 to $3 ,500 installed and
- 4:17makes the whole room look bigger. The one honest
- 4:19caveat, you have to squeegee it after every shower
- 4:23to keep it looking its best. That cold blast
- 4:25tip is so real. OK, next category, vanity and
- 4:29storage. And this is your favorite. I know it.
- 4:31It is, because storage shows up in more 2026
- 4:34remodels than any single finish swap. The vanity
- 4:38now reads like furniture. Not a fixture. Floating,
- 4:42wall -mounted designs in warm wood with fluted
- 4:45vertical -grooved fronts, white oak or walnut
- 4:47with a quartz top. The NKBA has wood -faced vanities
- 4:52at 62 % of projects. But here is what Reddit
- 4:55is blunt about. Deep drawers beat open shelving
- 4:58every single time. If you have the wall for it,
- 5:02a double vanity with 10 -plus feet of drawer
- 5:04storage is the upgrade people are happiest with
- 5:06years later. And two cheap moves nobody regrets.
- 5:10Run a bidet -ready outlet behind the toilet now,
- 5:13because adding it later is a nightmare. And put
- 5:15in more outlets than you think you need, including
- 5:17one inside a drawer for charging toothbrushes
- 5:19and razors. Hidden outlets? Yes. What about the
- 5:23part everyone actually sees the surfaces, the
- 5:25tile, the color? This is the biggest aesthetic
- 5:27shift of the year, and it happens on the walls
- 5:29and floors. Warmer, more tactile, and fewer grout
- 5:33lines. Large format porcelain, think 24 by 48
- 5:37panels, means fewer grout joints, which looks
- 5:41cleaner and resists mildew. 89 % of pros told
- 5:45the NKBA they see demand for smaller or no grout
- 5:48lines. On color, cool gray is officially out.
- 5:53Homeowners now call gray. Everything one of the
- 5:56fastest ways to date a bathroom. Income warm
- 5:59neutrals, greige, taupe, soft beige, with sage
- 6:03green, clay, and terracotta as accents. And the
- 6:07best part, you do not need a full renovation
- 6:09for color. Repaint with a moisture -resistant
- 6:12finish, swap the textiles, and the whole room
- 6:15warms up. So color is the cheapest high -impact
- 6:18move. Let's talk lighting, because you always
- 6:20say this is the most underrated upgrade. It is
- 6:23the highest leverage, lowest cost upgrade in
- 6:26the entire room. One overhead fixture is the
- 6:29mark of a builder -grade bathroom. A designed
- 6:32one uses three layers. Ambient overhead, task
- 6:35lighting at the mirror, and that is sconces beside
- 6:38the mirror at eye level, not above it, and accent
- 6:41lighting under a floating vanity or in a niche.
- 6:45Put them on separate dimmers so the room goes
- 6:47from bright morning to soft evening soak. And
- 6:50a backlit smart mirror does two jobs at once,
- 6:53even grooming light plus a glow that makes the
- 6:55room feel custom. They have dropped to around
- 6:58$500 to $2 ,000. For one high -impact change
- 7:02on a small budget, it is hard to beat. All right,
- 7:05the fun one, wellness, comfort, and tech. This
- 7:07feels like the soul of 2026. It is the defining
- 7:10theme. About 36 % of remodeled baths now build
- 7:14in dedicated wellness features. Wellness is not
- 7:18a single feature anymore. It is a zone. Steam
- 7:21showers with aromatherapy. Heated benches. Free
- 7:25-standing soaking tubs under a window. And heated
- 7:28floors are the single most named wish I had done
- 7:31it sooner upgrade we hear. Although remember
- 7:33the math, they return only 40 to 50 percent.
- 7:36So buy them to enjoy them. On tech, the advice
- 7:40is restraint. Add the one or two things you will
- 7:43use daily. A digital shower system or a smart
- 7:46toilet with a bidet. And skip the novelty gadgets
- 7:49that just gather dust. And the last category,
- 7:51the one nobody photographs, efficiency and systems.
- 7:54Right. The least glamorous ideas protect everything
- 7:57else. Water -efficient water -sense fixtures
- 8:01cut your bill every month, and some utilities
- 8:04give you up to $100 back in rebates. But the
- 8:07real non -negotiable is humidity management.
- 8:10The wetroom era puts more moisture in the air,
- 8:13and a cheap fan is the fast road to mold. A humidity
- 8:17-sensing exhaust fan that adjusts its own speed
- 8:20is the upgrade homeowners insist on after the
- 8:22fact. As one homeowner put it perfectly, spend
- 8:26the money behind the walls before you spend it
- 8:28on luxury fixtures. That might be the line of
- 8:31the episode. Now you mind real homeowner threads
- 8:33on Reddit for this. What do people keep in love
- 8:36versus what do they regret? So the love list.
- 8:39Heated floors, a real towel warmer, the curbless
- 8:42shower, a bidet or smart toilet, deep vanity
- 8:45drawers, a backlit mirror and stylish grab bars
- 8:48added early. The regret list is just as useful.
- 8:51Matte black fixtures, because they show every
- 8:54water spot. Vessel sinks that splash and eat
- 8:57counter space. Tiny penny tile that is brutal
- 9:00to clean. Open shelving that collects dust. And
- 9:03a small 3x3 shower. The community has a motto
- 9:06worth borrowing. Buy once, cry once. Spend on
- 9:11what is hard to change later. The tile. The plumbing.
- 9:15The waterproofing. The shower valve. And save
- 9:18on what you can swap in an afternoon. The mirror.
- 9:21The towel bars, the paint. Buy once, cry once,
- 9:25I love that. Before we wrap, the pain points.
- 9:28What trips people up most? The big ones. Contractors
- 9:31who go silent, so hire on a written scope and
- 9:34references, not the lowest bid. Hidden water
- 9:37damage, which is your contingency? Material lead
- 9:40times, so order your vanity and glass before
- 9:43demo even starts. And undertone clashes, where
- 9:46the tile, grout, paint, and wood all carry warm
- 9:49or cool undertones, and mixing them makes a room
- 9:52feel off. Sample them together, in the actual
- 9:56light of the room. And one habit that saves future
- 9:59headaches, photograph the open walls before the
- 10:02drywall goes back up, so you always know where
- 10:04the pipes and wiring run. That is a pro move
- 10:07right there. Jessica, give us the one sentence
- 10:09takeaway for someone starting their bathroom
- 10:11in 2026. Decide first whether you are staying
- 10:14or selling, because staying favors comfort and
- 10:17selling favors that high ROI five. Then spend
- 10:20your money behind the walls before you spend
- 10:22it on the things people compliment. Get those
- 10:25two right, and you cannot go wrong. Perfect.
- 10:28If you want to see these ideas in real homes,

- 10:53Chris. Go build something you will love for years.
