Latest / Birdland Territory / A stirring Orioles comeback win, O's offense breaks out
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hey, Birdland. One a night at Oriel Park at Camden Yards,
- 0:10Speaker 1: the Birds had their biggest inning of the year that
- 0:13Speaker 1: led to their biggest win of the year, as they
- 0:16Speaker 1: are now nine and seven after Monday nights comeback win
- 0:19Speaker 1: over Arizona nine and seven, nine to seven in the
- 0:22Speaker 1: score nine and seven is also their record. Seven to
- 0:25Speaker 1: one was the score, and it was looking pretty bleak
- 0:28Speaker 1: in Birdland and then guys, they got it going. We
- 0:30Speaker 1: are the trio is back, Steve, Brad and Tim and
- 0:34Speaker 1: brad fortieth birthday party is in the books.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Truck well, yeah, went well when well?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Then now getting last night's game in there too, that
- 0:43Speaker 3: was a perfect uh little extra to the birthday celebration.
- 0:46Speaker 3: So it was it was good weekend and great win
- 0:48Speaker 3: last night watching that game.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You know, the interesting thing about baseball comebacks is, unlike
- 0:53Speaker 1: the NFL, where you have a whole week to enjoy it,
- 0:56Speaker 1: there's another game and that night's pitcher might shut you down,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and all of a sudden you lose twenty four hours later.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I think it's hard to build momentum for off of
- 1:04Speaker 1: one win like that, as big as it was. But
- 1:07Speaker 1: let me hear what you guys think. I think the
- 1:09Speaker 1: Orioles are building general momentum obviously here winning the games
- 1:14Speaker 1: they've been winning, winning three in a row and six
- 1:16Speaker 1: of seven. And again, I don't think they're playing full
- 1:19Speaker 1: go the way they're gonna play at one point, but
- 1:22Speaker 1: it's trending in a better direction.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. I think I agree with you, Steve.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It is tough to build themntum in baseball, I feel
- 1:30Speaker 3: like at times. But that's a big one last night,
- 1:33Speaker 3: coming from six runs down like that, and they kind
- 1:36Speaker 3: of did what were you expect them to do throughout
- 1:39Speaker 3: the season. You know, a couple good at bats here,
- 1:42Speaker 3: then the big blast and now they're one. They're down
- 1:44Speaker 3: one and that home run from Pe was awesome to
- 1:47Speaker 3: see his reaction. We talked about a couple episodes ago,
- 1:50Speaker 3: you want to see these guys genuine reactions, and that
- 1:52Speaker 3: was a genuine reaction from him. He fans no really
- 1:55Speaker 3: cares after his interview on Friday, So seeing him at
- 1:58Speaker 3: that home run there and put the team ahead and
- 2:00Speaker 3: just being excited that he got a big hit, but
- 2:03Speaker 3: it was more about the team. He talked about it
- 2:04Speaker 3: after the game too, So just seeing him in Jeremi
- 2:07Speaker 3: Jackson's games and then their postgame interview together. To me,
- 2:11Speaker 3: that's awesome, and I think that's what really builds momentum.
- 2:15Speaker 4: I don't want to overstate the wins, Steve, but that
- 2:19Speaker 4: felt different, right, Like you can go back to twenty
- 2:22Speaker 4: twenty three when they won one hundred games.
- 2:24Speaker 5: One of their calling cards was they were.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Never out of the game and they would just find
- 2:29Speaker 4: ways to come back and win. They led MLB and
- 2:32Speaker 4: come from behind wins. That was their fifth come from
- 2:35Speaker 4: behind win last night, which is already tied for fourth
- 2:38Speaker 4: most in the majors. And things were not going well
- 2:41Speaker 4: for them early on in that game. Ryan Nelson was
- 2:44Speaker 4: really shutting him down through the first four innings. I
- 2:46Speaker 4: think they only had one hit, but when the Diamondbacks
- 2:50Speaker 4: had a seven to one lead, they had a ninety
- 2:52Speaker 4: seven percent chance to win that ballgame when you look
- 2:55Speaker 4: at the analytics, and the Orioles came back to win it,
- 2:58Speaker 4: and to do it later on in the game sixth inning,
- 3:01Speaker 4: where that was their biggest come from behind when that
- 3:04Speaker 4: late in a game since twenty twenty two. So I
- 3:08Speaker 4: understand it's just one of one's sixty two.
- 3:10Speaker 1: You don't want to.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Get too high. You don't want to get too low,
- 3:13Speaker 4: but that did feel different. And Pete coming off Friday
- 3:17Speaker 4: Steve where we were doing the show someday talking about
- 3:20Speaker 4: his press conference after that game Friday, stranding a lot
- 3:23Speaker 4: of runners. For him to come through with two of
- 3:26Speaker 4: the biggest hits in the last two games, I think
- 3:29Speaker 4: that has to do wonders for his confidence.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah, he's four for seven suddenly with two doubles and
- 3:36Speaker 1: a homer. So and Brad. The other day, Tim and
- 3:39Speaker 1: I talked at length about the Friday post game where
- 3:44Speaker 1: Pete fell on the sword. He sat there and looked
- 3:46Speaker 1: right into the camera and said, I'm not this is
- 3:48Speaker 1: not good enough, this is not acceptable. I need to
- 3:51Speaker 1: do better. I will do better. He and Alonso, or
- 3:53Speaker 1: he and Albert has had a long talk where Albert
- 3:56Speaker 1: I said, Pete, stop expanding the zone. If you walk
- 3:58Speaker 1: four times to night, great, you know, get back in
- 4:02Speaker 1: the zone. And we Tim and I were feeling the
- 4:05Speaker 1: accountability he took will lead to production one could sometimes
- 4:11Speaker 1: lead to two. Are we seeing some of that?
- 4:14Speaker 2: I think so.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I think just the fact that he's willing to kind
- 4:17Speaker 3: of take those walks, and I feel like even just
- 4:19Speaker 3: a week ago, I could if I was scouting him
- 4:23Speaker 3: facing him, he was pressing and you could tell he
- 4:26Speaker 3: was in between swings. He was laid on the fastball,
- 4:29Speaker 3: looking for breaking balls and not kind of sure what
- 4:31Speaker 3: he wanted to attack. And the last watching the games
- 4:34Speaker 3: this weekend and yesterday, he's more balanced. He's getting the
- 4:38Speaker 3: pitches he wants to hit. And then last night he
- 4:41Speaker 3: finally got one that he shouldn't miss and he didn't,
- 4:43Speaker 3: And I think that's where it kind of I think
- 4:46Speaker 3: he was kind of pressing it, trying to make the
- 4:48Speaker 3: game come to him, and he's finally staying back and
- 4:52Speaker 3: letting the game kind of come to him. And that's
- 4:54Speaker 3: what I've seen the last couple of games since that
- 4:56Speaker 3: bats have changed completely. Those pitches he's been he was chasing,
- 4:59Speaker 3: I mean, and he's taking these walks on pitches that
- 5:01Speaker 3: are just out of the zone. It's not like these
- 5:03Speaker 3: pitches are extremely wild, but he's taking life spitting on
- 5:06Speaker 3: pitches that are an inch or two blow of the zone,
- 5:08Speaker 3: an inch or two outside. And that's the biggest difference
- 5:10Speaker 3: I've seen that just in the last three four or
- 5:12Speaker 3: five games of watching.
- 5:14Speaker 5: And that's four straight games now.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Pete Alonso has worked to walk, which is huge, and
- 5:20Speaker 4: that's exactly what Craig albern I was just saying. If
- 5:22Speaker 4: you can go for oh and you get four walks,
- 5:24Speaker 4: that's a win. You will take it. And I think
- 5:27Speaker 4: that's been some of the most encouraging things of the
- 5:31Speaker 4: start to the season. Guys, they're nine and seven, and
- 5:33Speaker 4: yes they're on a nice run right now, but not
- 5:36Speaker 4: everybody's been clicking. And now Pete's clicking, and now you
- 5:39Speaker 4: see the bottom third of the lineup contributing. We're over
- 5:42Speaker 4: the weekend, Colton Cow's or Kobe Mayo. They drove RBIs,
- 5:46Speaker 4: drove in runs Saturday and Sunday, Jeremiah Jackson last night
- 5:50Speaker 4: with a Grand Slam and then another home run later
- 5:52Speaker 4: on as a massive insurance run. We knew that this
- 5:56Speaker 4: offense would not scuffle to the lengths that they were
- 5:59Speaker 4: to begin this season over one hundred and sixty two games,
- 6:02Speaker 4: and it seems like this offense is starting to break out.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Twenty one runs the last three games and six homers,
- 6:10Speaker 1: So the Orios weren't hitting homers. Now they're hitting them.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Last night they hit three, a season high. So Pete
- 6:16Speaker 1: Alonzo was a hero in Birdland last night, but he
- 6:19Speaker 1: was not the only one. We'll check in on that
- 6:22Speaker 1: and more coming up. Guys.

- 7:25Speaker 1: Guys, Jeremiah Jackson, what a night. Two homers, including his
- 7:30Speaker 1: first career Grand Slam, first since Gary Sanchez hit won
- 7:33Speaker 1: for the Orioles, and so what a swing. What impressed
- 7:37Speaker 1: me most of all was he hit the foul ball
- 7:39Speaker 1: that took out briefly his manager and we hope Greg
- 7:42Speaker 1: albert As is obviously going to be fine. I don't
- 7:45Speaker 1: know how that didn't unnerve him to the point he
- 7:48Speaker 1: couldn't do what he did.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Wow, that was impressive to say.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I think anytime there was a few instances of my
- 7:56Speaker 3: career where someone hurt someone in the stands, and I
- 7:59Speaker 3: mean it shook him for not just that game a
- 8:01Speaker 3: couple of days later, and for him to go back
- 8:04Speaker 3: out there and just kind of get refocused, and just
- 8:07Speaker 3: hearing them talk about how Craig Alvin has these guys
- 8:10Speaker 3: clicking right now. It's kind of like guys take punches
- 8:13Speaker 3: and keep going and to see their manager get taken out.
- 8:16Speaker 3: And I think it's just that message that I guess
- 8:18Speaker 3: he's been saying since the beginning of spring training, just
- 8:20Speaker 3: every day is a new day and whatever happens, we
- 8:22Speaker 3: just got to keep grinding, keep grinding, and the guys
- 8:25Speaker 3: really showed it. But for Jeremi Jackson to go out
- 8:27Speaker 3: there and have not won but two homers after that
- 8:30Speaker 3: scary incident shows a lot about him and it shows
- 8:33Speaker 3: about a lot about the fight I think of this team.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it was funny seeing Kevin Brown interview Jeremiah Jackson afterwards, saying, hey, man,
- 8:41Speaker 5: do you feel like you had to come through big
- 8:43Speaker 5: after hitting Craig like you know? And he just kind
- 8:46Speaker 5: of laughed at all.
- 8:47Speaker 4: But look, I think we focus on the big swings, guys,
- 8:50Speaker 4: but how about a couple of really nice defensive plays
- 8:53Speaker 4: that he made at second base early on in that ballgame.
- 8:56Speaker 4: And Jeremiah Jackson, Steve, I know you've probably heard some
- 9:00Speaker 4: of the chatter too in recent weeks. We know that
- 9:03Speaker 4: Jackson Holliday is not going to get activated this week,
- 9:05Speaker 4: but everyone's already looking ahead. Who's going to be that move?
- 9:09Speaker 4: Could it be Jeremiah Jackson? He has options? Well, if
- 9:12Speaker 4: he keeps turning in nights like that, guys, he's not
- 9:15Speaker 4: going to get sent down. And he had been scuffling
- 9:18Speaker 4: a little bit heading into the weekend. So maybe he's
- 9:21Speaker 4: starting to get out of it. He was one of
- 9:23Speaker 4: the serious bright spots for this team down the stretch
- 9:25Speaker 4: last year after the trade deadline, where he got a
- 9:28Speaker 4: huge runway and it didn't look comfortable at times in
- 9:32Speaker 4: the field. I remember that game in Wrigley, had a
- 9:34Speaker 4: couple of errors right when he got called up.
- 9:36Speaker 5: But he could hit.
- 9:38Speaker 4: He hit from day one when he got called up,
- 9:41Speaker 4: and it was huge for him to come through both
- 9:44Speaker 4: times last night.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think his defense is going to determine
- 9:51Speaker 1: his staying power on this roster. They know he can
- 9:53Speaker 1: swing it, they know he's probably not an everyday player
- 9:57Speaker 1: when they get their full compliment of guys. And usually
- 10:01Speaker 1: when you think utility infield or you think defense first,
- 10:04Speaker 1: hope he can help a little with the bat. This
- 10:06Speaker 1: is kind of the opposite. But I think he has,
- 10:08Speaker 1: as you cited to him, made improvements and alburtn Ash
- 10:12Speaker 1: has talked about that, and he's just got to keep
- 10:14Speaker 1: showing that, Brad, because the Orioles are a little defensively challenged.
- 10:18Speaker 1: We've discussed it several times on the show. Right now,
- 10:21Speaker 1: they're trying to be above average defensive team and they're
- 10:23Speaker 1: probably not quite there, So every player has to do
- 10:27Speaker 1: his part to make sure there's not a weak link
- 10:30Speaker 1: out there.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, it's funny you guys say this. I obviously
- 10:33Speaker 3: don't have as much extensive background of these guys and
- 10:37Speaker 3: have watched as many games as you have, But watching
- 10:39Speaker 3: him at the second base, I didn't even know he
- 10:42Speaker 3: was mainly a third basement. I think they said when
- 10:44Speaker 3: he was coming up through the miners, and so when
- 10:46Speaker 3: he's out there now, I mean he to me looks
- 10:48Speaker 3: comfortable with those balls, especially those little pop flies that
- 10:51Speaker 3: go towards the outfielders. I feel like that's one of
- 10:53Speaker 3: the tougher plays second basemen have because you have outfielder
- 10:56Speaker 3: coming in, you're going back. Everybody's so nervous to run
- 10:59Speaker 3: on each other. And I swear he's made four or
- 11:01Speaker 3: five in the last week watching these games where he's
- 11:03Speaker 3: super comfortable, and that's the guy you want going after
- 11:05Speaker 3: the ball. But moving to his left, he looks good.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Up the middle, he's look good a couple double play
- 11:11Speaker 3: turns and everything like that. But like you're saying, he's
- 11:13Speaker 3: gonna hit, and I know what you're saying with the
- 11:15Speaker 3: defense might determine, but I'm just one of those guys.
- 11:19Speaker 3: I've always heard that if if you can have a bat,
- 11:21Speaker 3: they're gonna find a spot for you somewhere. So I
- 11:24Speaker 3: hope he continues to because I think getting the contributions
- 11:27Speaker 3: that they had at the bottom of their lineup has
- 11:28Speaker 3: taken a lot of pressure off of Pete Alonzo and
- 11:31Speaker 3: Henderson and Ward and all the guys that you know
- 11:34Speaker 3: are gonna put up their numbers. But having these guys
- 11:36Speaker 3: get on base and doing the production they've had, that's
- 11:38Speaker 3: gonna take a ton of pressure off the guys at
- 11:40Speaker 3: the top of the lineup and allow them to free
- 11:42Speaker 3: up and just kind of go out there and just
- 11:44Speaker 3: stop worrying about what your numbers are going to be,
- 11:46Speaker 3: or I gotta do this, I gotta do that. You
- 11:48Speaker 3: just go out there, get your pitches to hit, and
- 11:51Speaker 3: you know, drive the ball over the fence like that.
- 11:52Speaker 2: We know they can.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Brad got to get your thoughts on a couple of
- 11:56Speaker 4: guys in the bullpen last night. I feel like we
- 11:58Speaker 4: brought up Rico Garcia on every single episode of this podcast. Yeah,
- 12:03Speaker 4: another one, two, three inning. He became just the third
- 12:06Speaker 4: Orioles pitcher to start eight straight appearances without giving up
- 12:11Speaker 4: a hit. And I also thought Ryan Helsley that was
- 12:13Speaker 4: his first clean inning of the season. I thought that
- 12:16Speaker 4: was his best outing as well. Those two guys.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Yeah, Ria Arcia just continues to do it. And and
- 12:21Speaker 3: he's he's a confident picture right now. I just remember
- 12:24Speaker 3: uh here and Jim Palmer talking about all the time
- 12:26Speaker 3: on the broadcast. He's just he's a confident guy right now.
- 12:29Speaker 3: And you can just tell that that's come. It's coming out,
- 12:31Speaker 3: and there's gonna be at some point here where he's
- 12:33Speaker 3: gonna he's gonna obviously let up a hit, he's gonna
- 12:35Speaker 3: give up a run, and that's to me, that's It'll
- 12:38Speaker 3: be interesting to see how it goes from there if
- 12:39Speaker 3: he has one or two outings in a row where
- 12:41Speaker 3: he's giving up runs, just to see where the confidence
- 12:43Speaker 3: goes from there. But his stuff is his back end stuff,
- 12:46Speaker 3: and he's proven it right now, and he's going out
- 12:48Speaker 3: there and he kind of seems like a guy that's
- 12:50Speaker 3: got nothing to lose. It's he's got he's been a journeyman,
- 12:52Speaker 3: he's finally found maybe a niche here. He feels comfortable
- 12:55Speaker 3: and he's out there just going out there. And put
- 12:56Speaker 3: up zeros and last night didn't have you know, a
- 12:59Speaker 3: bunch of strikeouts, but he put the ball on the
- 13:01Speaker 3: ground and they were weak contacts and they moved moved
- 13:03Speaker 3: the ball along, and that's that's the name of the game.
- 13:05Speaker 3: In the bullpen and talking with talking about Hellsley last night,
- 13:08Speaker 3: again he there's he I feel like his timing is
- 13:11Speaker 3: still somewhere in between, just watching him use a high
- 13:14Speaker 3: light kick and a slide step. He's going mid at
- 13:17Speaker 3: bat with nobody on base, and a lot of times
- 13:19Speaker 3: you'll see pictures use the slide step when there's guys
- 13:22Speaker 3: on base, but his timing is just a little bit off.
- 13:24Speaker 3: You could see yesterday with a couple of his fastballs
- 13:26Speaker 3: riding real high in the zone. He was high light
- 13:29Speaker 3: kick that pitch, the next one was slide step, and
- 13:31Speaker 3: he's back in the zone and then he'd go back
- 13:33Speaker 3: to the high light kick. So for me, it'd just
- 13:35Speaker 3: be interesting to see. Like I said, that's just one
- 13:37Speaker 3: of these little things I'm watching as he comes out there,
- 13:40Speaker 3: because I noticed it two outings ago, and I heard
- 13:43Speaker 3: somebody after the game mentioned that he knows his timing.
- 13:45Speaker 3: So that's where he's kind of somewhere in between right now.
- 13:48Speaker 3: But it would be interesting to see because when he
- 13:50Speaker 3: gets that high light kick, he's stowing those one hundred.
- 13:52Speaker 2: And one mile on our fastballs.
- 13:53Speaker 3: When he has the slide step, it seems to me
- 13:56Speaker 3: it's still coming in hot, but it's ninety eight ninety nine,
- 13:58Speaker 3: and it would just be interesting to see the couple
- 14:00Speaker 3: weeks if he's able to finally time.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Up those those pitches.
- 14:03Speaker 3: But those guys were phenomenal last night and sealed the
- 14:05Speaker 3: win for the Orioles there.
- 14:08Speaker 1: He had. He's five for five and saved. So even
- 14:10Speaker 1: if he's got a little off his top peak performance,
- 14:14Speaker 1: he hasn't let one get away, and so that's that's
- 14:16Speaker 1: a big factor for the Orioles last night. Twelve pitches,
- 14:19Speaker 1: eight strikes and a clean inning. What did you guys
- 14:22Speaker 1: make of Dean Kramer? This was an interesting box score.
- 14:25Speaker 1: The Gunner era cost him two hundred runs, so five innings,
- 14:29Speaker 1: four runs to earn, nine strikeouts, no walks, a lot
- 14:33Speaker 1: of swing and miss and yet also three homers allowed.
- 14:36Speaker 1: It was quite the mixed bag.
- 14:39Speaker 4: It was a very interesting appearance Steve, and he had
- 14:44Speaker 4: the splitter. He was really leaning into the Spoilter had
- 14:46Speaker 4: eight swings and misses with their He had nine strikeouts,
- 14:49Speaker 4: which I believe ties the Orioles for most strikeouts this
- 14:53Speaker 4: year by a pitcher. But first pitch, the kid Tell
- 14:56Speaker 4: Marte took it over four hundred and forty feet.
- 14:59Speaker 5: You're like a, oh my gosh, welcome back Dean.
- 15:01Speaker 4: And we know the bugaboo with Dean right where you
- 15:05Speaker 4: look at his career splits in. His worst numbers by
- 15:09Speaker 4: far and away are the months of March and April,
- 15:13Speaker 4: and he obviously didn't start with this club. He had
- 15:16Speaker 4: two starts in Norfolk. He went four and two thirds
- 15:18Speaker 4: innings and both of those games gave up three earned
- 15:21Speaker 4: runs across both starts. So it was a mixed bag.
- 15:25Speaker 4: And the Diamondbacks, it was very surprising. They were coming
- 15:28Speaker 4: into the game last night Brad with just nine home runs.
- 15:31Speaker 4: They hit four last night, three off Dean Kramer, Marte
- 15:35Speaker 4: with two, and then Aronado with one as well after
- 15:39Speaker 4: the Gunner Henderson error.
- 15:41Speaker 5: But mixed bag for Dean.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 15:46Speaker 3: I just before the show started talking with Steve with it,
- 15:49Speaker 3: I liked what I saw. The numbers to me on
- 15:52Speaker 3: the stat line didn't add up to as as good.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Of a start as I thought. It was. Just for
- 15:56Speaker 2: the first one. Getting the ambush home run from.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Ketel today, that's that's a tough one to you're you're
- 16:02Speaker 3: coming back to the team trying to make a good impression,
- 16:04Speaker 3: just thinking, here's the first pitch, fastball, and he jumps
- 16:07Speaker 3: on that pitch four inches above the zone into the
- 16:09Speaker 3: into the street out there, Utah Street.
- 16:12Speaker 2: But uh yeah, I thought I.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Thought he was good when I think when he needed
- 16:16Speaker 3: to make pitches there towards the end of his outing,
- 16:18Speaker 3: that's where I thought he really stepped up. That he
- 16:21Speaker 3: could have that outing very easily, could have been six
- 16:24Speaker 3: seven runs, And he stepped up, and he leaned on
- 16:26Speaker 3: the splitter, like you said, and with the broadcast they
- 16:29Speaker 3: said he really struggles with the splitter early on in
- 16:31Speaker 3: the season because of the grip and the cold temperatures.
- 16:33Speaker 3: But I think last night he just needed to make
- 16:36Speaker 3: pitches and he know it's not one of those things
- 16:38Speaker 3: where I'm gonna try to mix it up. I need
- 16:39Speaker 3: to get out of this out in here and keep
- 16:41Speaker 3: the score where it is.
- 16:42Speaker 2: So I thought I thought that was good.
- 16:44Speaker 3: The home run was just to aeronauto was just a
- 16:48Speaker 3: just a slider that he left middle middle, and that's
- 16:50Speaker 3: obviously not.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Where he's trying to put it.
- 16:52Speaker 3: And Aeronaut has always been known to kind of hit
- 16:54Speaker 3: breaking balls in the zone, so obviously a pitch he
- 16:56Speaker 3: could actually I think it was a fastball up the
- 16:58Speaker 3: one he gave to him, But anyway, it was I
- 17:01Speaker 3: thought overall it was a good outing, something to build on.
- 17:04Speaker 3: I hope, I hope he continues to beat in the
- 17:06Speaker 3: rotation and just get more of a chance, not he's
- 17:08Speaker 3: up and down, back and forth between Triple A in Baltimore,
- 17:11Speaker 3: because I think he's gonna continue to get better as
- 17:13Speaker 3: the summer goes along.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Brad, you weren't with us on Sunday, but it did
- 17:17Speaker 4: want to get your thoughts on Kate Povich his two
- 17:20Speaker 4: starts and then getting sent down as the corresponding move
- 17:23Speaker 4: for Kramer.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I just I think it was one of those
- 17:27Speaker 3: premeditated moves that they had. I think it's one of
- 17:30Speaker 3: those you know, we're gonna we're gonna have you start Sunday,
- 17:32Speaker 3: we're gonna send you down. Probably told him it's not
- 17:34Speaker 3: gonna be along. We need you like, it's not gonna
- 17:37Speaker 3: be a long Triple A stint, But.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Love the way he pitched. I I am a big
- 17:42Speaker 3: Coch Kate Povich fan. I think the way he pitches
- 17:45Speaker 3: is his kind of old school. It's kind of what
- 17:47Speaker 3: I when I first came up to the majors. These
- 17:49Speaker 3: guys throwing load him in nineties and just can locate
- 17:52Speaker 3: the ball everywhere. His cutter looked really good, and it
- 17:55Speaker 3: sounds like it's somewhat of a new weapon for him.
- 17:57Speaker 3: So I think that's something to build on when he
- 17:59Speaker 3: goes back down at TRIPLEA, whether it's one or two
- 18:01Speaker 3: starts he makes down there, really kind of lean on
- 18:03Speaker 3: that and see what he can he can do, especially
- 18:05Speaker 3: to the lefties, which he is the biggest struggle for him.
- 18:07Speaker 3: But I just hope his confidence stays out because he
- 18:11Speaker 3: pitched really well.
- 18:12Speaker 2: He should be in the rotation in the major leagues.
- 18:13Speaker 3: In my opinion right now, but obviously I'm not making
- 18:17Speaker 3: those decisions. And I think having a lefty too is
- 18:19Speaker 3: also another thing that adds to it all.
- 18:22Speaker 2: So I don't think he's gonna be down for long.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I think he's pitching kind of coming into his own
- 18:26Speaker 3: a little bit. For these couple outings. That I saw,
- 18:27Speaker 3: and I hope he goes down and really just kind
- 18:30Speaker 3: of stays focused and gets what he needs to do
- 18:33Speaker 3: down there and comes back up and can help this
- 18:35Speaker 3: team win, because I think he's a big piece towards
- 18:37Speaker 3: the end of the summer.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Wow, it's great to hear you talk so positively about Povich.
- 18:43Speaker 1: You clearly is a better pitcher what we've seen in
- 18:46Speaker 1: twenty six than twenty five. He's taken his game to
- 18:49Speaker 1: a level where he can help this team now and
- 18:52Speaker 1: then a time when they lost Zak Effln that was
- 18:54Speaker 1: such devastating news for the ball club. To have Kramer
- 18:57Speaker 1: throw pretty well all the swing and miss we saw.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Brandon Young has done his thing, and in fact, he's
- 19:03Speaker 1: pitched well when he went back to Triple A. This
- 19:05Speaker 1: depth they're building, not even to mention the young kids
- 19:08Speaker 1: who are in Norfolk. This is really going to serve
- 19:10Speaker 1: the Ools well. I think, guys, I want to get
- 19:12Speaker 1: back to Pete Alonzo for a second. That is the
- 19:16Speaker 1: swing they signed him for the game winning homer. It
- 19:20Speaker 1: was one thing to have a two run doubles Sunday
- 19:22Speaker 1: that added to the lead. Here are the Orioles coming
- 19:25Speaker 1: from six down and I know fans are thinking, oh,
- 19:29Speaker 1: if they lose by one after coming all the way back, Well,
- 19:31Speaker 1: Pete's swing changed all of that. And he is four
- 19:35Speaker 1: for seven, two doubles, a homer, He's walked twice, no
- 19:38Speaker 1: strikeouts in those two games. So whatever Albernas and he
- 19:42Speaker 1: talked about, he seems to have found his zone a
- 19:45Speaker 1: little bit. And if it were a young guy, Brad,
- 19:48Speaker 1: I'd be really excited for him. Feel like the confidence
- 19:51Speaker 1: is high. I wasn't worried about Pete Alonzo's confidence even
- 19:54Speaker 1: when people were getting on him. But it's got to
- 19:57Speaker 1: be high. I mean, how can your confidence not be
- 20:00Speaker 1: young player, star, whoever it is, after what he's done.
- 20:03Speaker 3: There, Yeah, and I think he's he's very clear with
- 20:06Speaker 3: this this ball club, in this city, what they expect
- 20:09Speaker 3: of him. And I think that's one of those things
- 20:11Speaker 3: that only time in the major leagues will give you
- 20:14Speaker 3: a chance to come back and give your confidence back
- 20:16Speaker 3: when it comes to that, because when you haven't been
- 20:19Speaker 3: through the fire, and you haven't been through eight plus
- 20:22Speaker 3: seasons like he has, seven plus seasons like he has,
- 20:24Speaker 3: you're kind of wondering, oh, man, do I still have it?
- 20:26Speaker 2: Can I still do this? For him. I think he
- 20:29Speaker 2: knows what he expected.
- 20:30Speaker 3: But I think that that talk from the manager, I
- 20:33Speaker 3: think it eased him up. It freed him up, and
- 20:35Speaker 3: it finally, I think it's it's one thing to know it,
- 20:37Speaker 3: and it's another thing to hear from your manager and
- 20:40Speaker 3: maybe other teammates or the media or whatever.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Because he knows.
- 20:43Speaker 3: What he's what he's he's expected to do, and I
- 20:45Speaker 3: think he just tried to put too much pressure on himself.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Like I said before, I think he was just trying
- 20:50Speaker 3: to make it come to him as opposed to just
- 20:52Speaker 3: sitting back waiting for the pitches he knows he can hit.
- 20:55Speaker 3: And he just looks super comfortable out there. Like I said,
- 20:57Speaker 3: his takes to me are what told me he's starting
- 21:00Speaker 3: to see it a little bit better because they were
- 21:02Speaker 3: not bad pitches that he's taking for these walks. And
- 21:05Speaker 3: then now is the pitches in the zone he's hitting,
- 21:07Speaker 3: so he's getting on that front foot of the brig
- 21:08Speaker 3: and ball and he's really driving it down the line.
- 21:10Speaker 3: And then last night that pitch right down the middle,
- 21:12Speaker 3: he didn't miss it, And that's what you expect from
- 21:14Speaker 3: Pete and I think that's what he expected from himself,
- 21:16Speaker 3: and I've seen Pete before in person.
- 21:18Speaker 2: You never know how many can run off here in
- 21:20Speaker 2: a row. He could. He could go five games in
- 21:22Speaker 2: a row with a home run and just go off and.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Get his numbers right back in line what everybody thinks,
- 21:26Speaker 3: and everybody's gonna forget about the first ten, ten days
- 21:29Speaker 3: or two weeks of the season. So that's what I'm
- 21:30Speaker 3: hoping for Pete, and I'm hoping for the Orioles. That's
- 21:33Speaker 3: he's got it, He's seen it well, and he's he's
- 21:35Speaker 3: right where he wants to be right now.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Steve, I think you hit it on the head man,
- 21:39Speaker 4: like that moment that come from behind, that go ahead
- 21:43Speaker 4: two run shot. That is exactly why they got Pete
- 21:46Speaker 4: Alonzo and someone of his pedigree, and that's why there
- 21:50Speaker 4: was never a panic or any you know, real concern
- 21:53Speaker 4: from me, just because Pete has that pedigree.
- 21:56Speaker 5: And I think anytime someone comes over.
- 21:59Speaker 4: From another club to a different organization, and especially in
- 22:02Speaker 4: Pete's case, you get the big contract. I'm sure you
- 22:05Speaker 4: want to make a great first impression. I'm sure you
- 22:07Speaker 4: probably put a little pressure on yourself to get out
- 22:10Speaker 4: get off to a good start. But when we had
- 22:13Speaker 4: Buck show Walter on the show right when Pete Alonso signed.
- 22:17Speaker 4: It was kind of the money quote of the interviews,
- 22:19Speaker 4: saying that Pete's gonna get Baltimore, and Baltimore is going
- 22:23Speaker 4: to get Pete because he's that type of leader, he's
- 22:27Speaker 4: that type of grinder and he's gonna get after it
- 22:30Speaker 4: and he plays every single day. I remember Buck saying
- 22:33Speaker 4: to us, you know you're gonna have to fight him
- 22:35Speaker 4: just to get him off first base in the DH Like,
- 22:38Speaker 4: that's just who Pete Alonso is and that's the type
- 22:41Speaker 4: of player that I expect the Orioles to get.
- 22:45Speaker 1: What a fun night, What a fun moment for Pete
- 22:47Speaker 1: and the Oriols are playing good baseball. Hopefully they keep
- 22:50Speaker 1: it carried here through this Arizona series and onto the road. Now,
- 22:54Speaker 1: one aspect of this team we want to get into
- 22:56Speaker 1: in a moment, center field playing time. How's that book
- 23:00Speaker 1: and what could it mean? We'll check on that in
- 23:03Speaker 1: a moment.
- 23:06Speaker 8: Big Bad Morning Show, Finnie and Haney Inside Access Live
- 23:10Speaker 8: on YouTube weekdays six till six, search Baltimore one O
- 23:14Speaker 8: five seven the Fan. Subscribe for Daily Short's right to
- 23:17Speaker 8: your phone and never miss which you missed one O
- 23:20Speaker 8: five seven the fan.
- 23:24Speaker 1: So, guys, as we get ready for Game two of
- 23:25Speaker 1: the series Tuesday night, O's in Arizona, the Orioles may
- 23:28Speaker 1: not have a regular center fielder, and the playing time
- 23:32Speaker 1: says they don't. Cowser started seven and a five sixty
- 23:37Speaker 1: six ops. He struggled at times. We've seen that Leodi
- 23:40Speaker 1: Taveres has started seven and a nine to forty seven ops.
- 23:45Speaker 1: We heard about the d The bat's been big. Dylan
- 23:48Speaker 1: Beavers has started twice out there, and there was another
- 23:50Speaker 1: time they had a light switch or it might have
- 23:52Speaker 1: been three centerfield starts. So what do you guys make
- 23:56Speaker 1: of how they're using the center fielders and what it
- 23:58Speaker 1: might mean here over the next weeks.
- 24:02Speaker 2: I think it's really interesting.
- 24:03Speaker 3: I think it's definitely something to kind of just follow
- 24:06Speaker 3: if you're if you're an O's fan, I think it's
- 24:09Speaker 3: one of those kind of let's see who's hot and
- 24:13Speaker 3: kind of roll with it for right now. I think
- 24:14Speaker 3: that the fact that they have played three guys in
- 24:16Speaker 3: center field as much as they have so as they
- 24:18Speaker 3: have confidence in their defense, I think it's just more
- 24:21Speaker 3: about who's kind of swinging in what the matchups are
- 24:23Speaker 3: that day and kind of just roll with it. I
- 24:25Speaker 3: think you're going to continue to see this two to
- 24:28Speaker 3: three man rotation out there because I think they kind
- 24:31Speaker 3: of like this. I think the players want to understand
- 24:33Speaker 3: what they're doing too, and I'm sure people are communicating
- 24:35Speaker 3: what they're gonna do with.
- 24:36Speaker 2: The playing time.
- 24:38Speaker 3: That helps also, But I think it's just kind of
- 24:41Speaker 3: gonna be rolling with the hot ad and get them
- 24:43Speaker 3: out there as much as possible when they're hot, and
- 24:45Speaker 3: when they kind of cool off, let's put the other
- 24:46Speaker 3: guy out there and see what happens.
- 24:48Speaker 2: But it's definitely gonna be something to follow along.
- 24:52Speaker 4: I think you're definitely right there, Brad, because it's kind
- 24:55Speaker 4: of evident by that. The first week of the season,
- 24:58Speaker 4: I thought Cowser was off to a side. Let's start,
- 25:00Speaker 4: he was seeing a lot of pitches four and a
- 25:02Speaker 4: half pitches per played appearance in that first week. Second
- 25:05Speaker 4: week was rough for him, and then we've seen since
- 25:09Speaker 4: that time Leodi Taveres has gotten the start in center
- 25:12Speaker 4: field the last four games, and it was interesting early
- 25:16Speaker 4: on in the season especially and it's been ongoing Craig
- 25:18Speaker 4: Alburn as it seems like he really wanted to spread
- 25:22Speaker 4: some playtime around to guys, but Taveres was kind of
- 25:25Speaker 4: that last guy to get a start out of the
- 25:28Speaker 4: position players, and he got that start in the day
- 25:31Speaker 4: game against his former club, the Rangers, and had a
- 25:34Speaker 4: really strong day. He had a two RBIs, he had
- 25:37Speaker 4: two hits a double in that game. But he's just
- 25:40Speaker 4: produced in every single opportunity that he's had. And I
- 25:43Speaker 4: think there's kind of layers to this as well. With
- 25:47Speaker 4: Tyler O'Neill being on the seven day il due to
- 25:51Speaker 4: a concussion, it kind of opens up some time in
- 25:54Speaker 4: right field as well. Right so we've seen Colden Kowser
- 25:58Speaker 4: out in right field recently, and I think I think
- 26:00Speaker 4: Kowser's plus defender in a corner outfield spot. I think
- 26:06Speaker 4: that was a question that everyone had, is what would
- 26:08Speaker 4: that look like every day in center field. So I
- 26:11Speaker 4: think you're sort of prioritizing defense in doing Tavaris and
- 26:16Speaker 4: center Cawser and right where you definitely feel better defensively there.
- 26:20Speaker 5: But I think this is going to be an ongoing thing.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Right now, it's been Taveras' job over the past four days,
- 26:25Speaker 4: But if Cawser's bat starts to heat up again and Heck,
- 26:28Speaker 4: even Beaver's has gotten some run there too. I think
- 26:31Speaker 4: it'll open up time for them.
- 26:34Speaker 1: It's interesting fans already are asking me about Enrique Bradfield
- 26:39Speaker 1: Junior at TRIPA with the struggles in center for Calser early,
- 26:43Speaker 1: and my take is it's just too soon for Enrique.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I mean, he's an eighty grade runner, he's an eighty
- 26:50Speaker 1: grade fielder, and his day is probably coming at some point.
- 26:55Speaker 1: But he's hitting low two hundreds. I still think he
- 26:58Speaker 1: needs to have a good long month hitting at Triple
- 27:01Speaker 1: A and barring an injury where they just have to
- 27:03Speaker 1: get somebody, I think it's going to be a while
- 27:06Speaker 1: for him, but I think he's getting much closer. Van's
- 27:09Speaker 1: Honeycut is at high A, and after the home run
- 27:12Speaker 1: burst of spring training, he struggled a little bit early
- 27:15Speaker 1: and he's striking out too much again, so that's what
- 27:18Speaker 1: he's got to change. But the Oarls have some guys
- 27:20Speaker 1: who can really get the ball in centerfield, I mean
- 27:23Speaker 1: really get the ball. Honeycut I think is at at
- 27:26Speaker 1: Bradfield's equal. I think fans are going to be surprised
- 27:29Speaker 1: at that. Defensively these guys can play, but how they
- 27:33Speaker 1: hit and how they get better on the farm is
- 27:36Speaker 1: going to determine the future here. So I think the
- 27:39Speaker 1: Oils have some centerfield options hopefully, but right now Leoni
- 27:43Speaker 1: Tavers is kind of carrying the mail for them, and
- 27:46Speaker 1: what a great pickup for what, by MLB standards, was
- 27:49Speaker 1: a very low dollar signing.
- 27:52Speaker 3: And I also think too, with the unfortunate part of
- 27:54Speaker 3: all the injuries that have happened so far this season,
- 27:57Speaker 3: it opens up playing time and I think it can
- 27:59Speaker 3: make it more clear who should be on the team
- 28:03Speaker 3: and the roster and who shouldn't be, and who should
- 28:05Speaker 3: be getting more playing time and who shouldn't be. I
- 28:07Speaker 3: just think it's I think it's ends up being a
- 28:09Speaker 3: blessing these guys. Obviously, we want these guys to get
- 28:11Speaker 3: back healthy as quick as possible. Hopefully Tyler's just the
- 28:14Speaker 3: seven days, but it's opening up opportunities, and that's what
- 28:17Speaker 3: I love seeing, like enter team competition and guys just
- 28:20Speaker 3: kind of pushing each.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Other to do better, and you just never know what's
- 28:23Speaker 2: going to come out of it.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Who knows what's going to come of the extra playing
- 28:26Speaker 3: time these guys might not have gotten otherwise, And I
- 28:29Speaker 3: think that's another interesting thing to follow here too, And
- 28:31Speaker 3: at some point you're gonna have to make a decision
- 28:33Speaker 3: when everybody's back, and it'll be interesting to see what
- 28:35Speaker 3: they do.
- 28:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you were hoping for some positive regression for the
- 28:40Speaker 4: injury wise, coming off of last year where they use
- 28:43Speaker 4: the IL thirty nine times on twenty nine different players,
- 28:47Speaker 4: and right now the Orioles have thirteen guys on the
- 28:50Speaker 4: injured list, which leads the majors.
- 28:52Speaker 5: It's crazy, but.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Brad, to your point, you can you can look at
- 28:56Speaker 4: all of these guys that have benefited because of that.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Nunyaz would not be on this roster right now. If
- 29:03Speaker 4: Kittridge and Keegan Thinking and Tetrigans worn on the IL,
- 29:07Speaker 4: new Yez wouldn't be here.
- 29:09Speaker 5: And now he's being used as a high leverage guy.
- 29:11Speaker 4: And you've seen Wolfram and Rico Garcia and all of
- 29:14Speaker 4: those guys in the bullpen take advantage. Adley Rutchman. He's
- 29:17Speaker 4: on the tendail. So Sam's gonna get some serious run
- 29:20Speaker 4: in this immediacy coming up. So yes, it's freed up
- 29:25Speaker 4: some chances for some guys, and multiple of them have delivered.
- 29:30Speaker 3: And you can tell I think it has shown a
- 29:32Speaker 3: lot of the team chemistry with guys coming and going
- 29:35Speaker 3: and off the injury list and going back to Triple A,
- 29:38Speaker 3: they seem I mean, you look in the dugout and
- 29:40Speaker 3: to me that tells me everything. Everybody is near everybody.
- 29:44Speaker 3: They all want to be near each other. Whether you
- 29:46Speaker 3: know Holliday was in the douguy last night too. He's
- 29:49Speaker 3: right in the mix with the guys. He hasn't been
- 29:51Speaker 3: around them as much the last.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Couple of weeks.
- 29:53Speaker 3: To me, it's just a great thing to see with
- 29:55Speaker 3: the injuries that are happening. Knowing how it's an unfortunate
- 29:58Speaker 3: think of baseball, but it's just need more. Back when
- 30:01Speaker 3: I was playing, it was forty guys. Now you need
- 30:03Speaker 3: fifty plus guys to get through a season. It's just
- 30:05Speaker 3: the reality of what major League baseball seems to be
- 30:08Speaker 3: today and to just see how close all these guys
- 30:10Speaker 3: really seem. And I don't think it's an act at
- 30:12Speaker 3: this point because there are two plus weeks in. It's
- 30:15Speaker 3: exciting to me as a former player, but as a
- 30:17Speaker 3: fan that should get you super excited because there's still
- 30:20Speaker 3: that X factor to me in baseball, and it's team chemistry.
- 30:23Speaker 3: There's not enough put on that emphasis, and this team
- 30:26Speaker 3: seems to have it. Every single guy seems to be
- 30:28Speaker 3: pulling for each other. They all seem excited when everybody
- 30:31Speaker 3: does well. They're there for each other when they're doing bad,
- 30:33Speaker 3: and that, to me is one of those things I've
- 30:35Speaker 3: picked up in the last ten days or so is
- 30:37Speaker 3: just it's fun to watch and it's cool, and every single.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Guy has talked about it.
- 30:40Speaker 3: So that's why I don't feel like it's made up
- 30:42Speaker 3: or this thing that's not actually there. These guys really
- 30:44Speaker 3: carry about each other and it's really cool to see.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Tim. I learned how important chemistry is in the clubhouse
- 30:51Speaker 1: from guys like Brad and Darren O'Day and Zach Britton.
- 30:54Speaker 1: They said, you can't put a stat on that, but
- 30:57Speaker 1: it means so much. Their teams had it, and early
- 31:01Speaker 1: signs we're knock gonna what are this team has it?
- 31:04Speaker 1: And so you think about this time last year, Tim,
- 31:07Speaker 1: things were starting to go south and it was gonna
- 31:09Speaker 1: get ugly, and it looks like the Orioles can avoid
- 31:13Speaker 1: that this year. That's Birdland's fervent hope.
- 31:17Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been a big talking point and I think
- 31:19Speaker 4: I remember Samuel Pasaio even saying during spring training that
- 31:24Speaker 4: the guys are spending more time together and maybe that
- 31:26Speaker 4: that was something that was overlooked last year. It's just
- 31:29Speaker 4: hanging out outside of games, outside of the clubhouse and
- 31:32Speaker 4: really developing those type of relationships. And we keep mentioning it,
- 31:37Speaker 4: but it bears mentioning the additions of Bassett and Pete
- 31:42Speaker 4: in terms of leadership in this clubhouse. I think those
- 31:45Speaker 4: two guys certainly helped that area a lot as well.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, well, a lot of.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Great stuff to talk about today, guys. This is kind
- 31:53Speaker 1: of a fun show and so we could probably go
- 31:56Speaker 1: on forever, but we'll have another one in a day
- 31:58Speaker 1: or two. And really enjoyed this one today, and I
- 32:02Speaker 1: want to let you guys know and the people watching
- 32:04Speaker 1: that at the ballpark last night, several people have watched
- 32:08Speaker 1: the show and enjoyed it and remarked to me about
- 32:11Speaker 1: that that was really cool and I appreciate you guys
- 32:14Speaker 1: doing that. And of course, please hit the subscribe button
- 32:17Speaker 1: as we build our channel here. As they like to
- 32:19Speaker 1: say in the YouTube world, I'm learning the lingo, guys.
- 32:23Speaker 1: But another one in the books. Really enjoyed it with
- 32:26Speaker 1: Brad and Tim, and we'll be back in a day
- 32:28Speaker 1: or two and be watching then for another edition of
- 32:31Speaker 1: Birdland Territory.
