- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37So I first of all. Definitely want to challenge our
- 0:40men that we be the priests and the pastors and the protectors
- 0:43of our home and we be the one that leading the home of
- 0:45spiritual matters. But women, if there's not a man
- 0:49in the house, there's no excuse. That.
- 0:51Children can't. Get the gospel you.
- 0:54Can still share the? Gospel with your.
- 0:56Children, whether you have a husband that's in the house or
- 0:59an unbelieving husband that's in the house or not, and Timothy
- 1:04was a good example of that. What Pastor Lewis just shared is
- 1:07important. As parents, God has tasked us
- 1:10with a duty to share the good news of Jesus Christ with our
- 1:13children. But what if the husband or wife
- 1:16within a home doesn't know Jesus as Lord and Savior?
- 1:19As we just heard from Pastor Lewis, while this makes things
- 1:21challenging for the other spouse, it doesn't negate the
- 1:25responsibility. Today, you'll learn just how
- 1:28important this task is and how you can begin sharing the gospel
- 1:32with your children now. Here's Pastor Lewis in the book
- 1:36of First Timothy, chapter one with today's edition of Living
- 1:39Waters of Grace. We also want to thank those of
- 1:42you who are listening. By way of radio.
- 1:45Station. Whether it's by Grace FM or if
- 1:48it is by YouTube. We thank you for listening and
- 1:50AS. Always we are grateful for those
- 1:53of. You who are listening behind
- 1:55prison walls, we pray this morning that you are.
- 1:58Blessed that the Lord blesses you with revelation.
- 2:01From His word that will help to change your life as we are
- 2:04looking forward to change ours. Amen.
- 2:07Amen. Would you please?
- 2:09Turn in your Bibles. To.
- 2:10First Timothy, chapter 1. So we're in first.
- 2:15Timothy. And before we get started, I
- 2:17just want to mention that for me first Timothy.
- 2:21Is very, very, very important. And the reason why is because I
- 2:26was going to a church prior to coming here and it was.
- 2:30A church that we actually were saved.
- 2:32We. Received our salvation that was.
- 2:34The church that we received our salvation.
- 2:36From in the. Pastor that church.
- 2:38Who was my mentor? He end up passing a few.
- 2:41Years after we had. Joined the church and have
- 2:43become saved and. And it was a heart, it was a
- 2:46heart issue as it was really hard for us because we did love.
- 2:49Him, he was a man, He was a true man of God.
- 2:51And we were being fed every Sunday with him being there and
- 2:56we noticed that some things that started to change after he had
- 2:59passed. And I was on a trip, a business
- 3:03trip and I was down in Nashville, TN.
- 3:06I remember it like it was. Yesterday.
- 3:09And I was sitting in a hotel room and was studying the Bible.
- 3:13It was after dinner. Everyone else was out doing what
- 3:15they do and, and, and, and I was in the room reading, reading the
- 3:19word of God. And I was, for some reason, I
- 3:21went to First Timothy and I read the entire book of First
- 3:25Timothy. And it was.
- 3:27After reading first. Timothy that I realized.
- 3:31That we were sitting in a ministry.
- 3:34That was out of order the. Lord illuminated First Timothy
- 3:39to me in a way that it had never been illuminated.
- 3:42Before and I realized through the word of God.
- 3:45I didn't need anybody to tell me.
- 3:47It was through the Word of God that this was out of order.
- 3:52And when I came back home, I told my wife we want to make
- 3:55some changes. We got to go, we got to go.
- 3:59And at that time, the Lord was already pressing upon my heart
- 4:02because we had moved from Roseville residence wise to
- 4:06Greensburg. That we really should.
- 4:08Be doing ministry in the community in which we live.
- 4:13So that is exactly. Where first Timothy is This is
- 4:15a. Book that teaches church order
- 4:17it is. 1. Of the Pastoral Epistles.
- 4:20In the Bible, First Timothy, Second Timothy, and also Titus.
- 4:24If we were to put them in order, it would be First Timothy,
- 4:26Titus, and then Second Timothy. Actually, Second Timothy was
- 4:30the. Last book that Paul wrote before
- 4:32he was executed, but. The reason why he.
- 4:35Wrote the book of. First Timothy.
- 4:37It was for the purpose of church order.
- 4:40Putting things. In order so.
- 4:43When he wrote. This book he was.
- 4:45Teaching Timothy about the things that we need to
- 4:48understand about the New Testament.
- 4:50Church. So this is where we go when
- 4:52we're. Looking for things?
- 4:54That deal with. Leaders and the things.
- 4:56Where the way that leaders should.
- 4:57Be in the doctrines. That we should be.
- 4:59Learning all this comes in the book of First Timothy, The
- 5:03Conduct. Of the church.
- 5:05The most important scripture. Or I should?
- 5:07Say the key scripture not the most important.
- 5:09But the key scripture. Is in First Timothy chapter 3
- 5:13and verse 15 and it simply says this.
- 5:17I write so that. You may know how you ought to
- 5:21conduct. Yourself.
- 5:23In the House of God. Which is the.
- 5:25Church of the Living God, Pillar and Ground.
- 5:30Of the truth that is the key verse in both of these epistles.
- 5:35And that's exactly. What Paul does here, he helps.
- 5:38Timothy to understand church conduct.
- 5:41So let's read it. Because I'm only going to do the
- 5:441st 11 verses. Because they are they're,
- 5:46they're loaded. We're going to do.
- 5:47The 1st 11 verses and then we're going to, you know, we'll come
- 5:49back, we'll make a comment, but that's as far as we're going to
- 5:52get. Today is.
- 5:53The 1st 11 verses. So let's let's read.
- 5:55Verse one it says Paul an apostle.
- 5:57Of Jesus Christ by. The commandment of God.
- 5:59Our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope to Timothy a
- 6:04true. Son, in the Faith, grace, mercy
- 6:07and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our.
- 6:11Lord, verse 3 as I urged. You, when I went into Macedonia,
- 6:15remain in Ephesus. That you may charge some, or
- 6:18that you may command some. That they teach no other
- 6:22doctrine, nor give heed. To.
- 6:25Fables and endless genealogies. Which cause?
- 6:28Disputes rather than godly edification, which is in faith.
- 6:33Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure.
- 6:35Heart. From a good conscience, and from
- 6:38a sincere faith, from which some having strayed.
- 6:43Have turned aside to idle talk. Desiring to be.
- 6:46Teachers of the law. Understanding neither what they
- 6:49say nor the things. Which they affirm, but.
- 6:54We know. That the law is good if it is
- 6:58used lawfully. Knowing this, that the law is
- 7:02not made. For a righteous.
- 7:04Person. But for the lawless.
- 7:06And the insubordinate and the ungodly for sinners, for the
- 7:11unholy and profane for murders of fathers and murderers, of
- 7:15mothers for fornicators, and sodomites for kidnappers.
- 7:20For liars. For perjurers.
- 7:23And if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound
- 7:27doctrine according to. The glorious Gospel of the
- 7:30Blessed. God, which was committed to my
- 7:35trust. That's a mouthful.
- 7:37And this is Lotus so. We go back to verse. 1.
- 7:40Now Paul wrote this letter. Obviously knowing or intending.
- 7:45For this letter to be read to everybody, this wasn't.
- 7:48Just a direct letter to Timothy, and that's.
- 7:51Why he added such? A introduction of who?
- 7:54He was he not? Not only.
- 7:56Said that this. Letter was written from.
- 7:58Paul, but he gave. His credentials.
- 8:00He gave his credentials. He gave his his.
- 8:03Ministry, what he was called to do and who called him to do it.
- 8:08Because he was about to share. A commandment with the church
- 8:12and they needed to understand that.
- 8:14He has the authority to do it. And that.
- 8:17Timothy has the authority. As a young pastor in that.
- 8:20Church so Paul says Paul an. Apostle of.
- 8:24Jesus Christ. So let's just deal with the
- 8:26fact. Just for a second of what it
- 8:29means to be an. Apostle of Jesus Christ.
- 8:32And, and, and I the reason why I want to deal with that is
- 8:34because we sometimes hear that term thrown around somewhat
- 8:39liberally in today's society. In some churches there are
- 8:42people who are self proclaiming. Themselves to be apostles who
- 8:47are called just. Giving themselves the title.
- 8:49Of apostle, well, Paul deals. With that and and and and I just
- 8:53want to kind of. Talk about what an.
- 8:55Apostle is and let's look at whether or not an apostle is
- 8:58something that is functional today.
- 9:02But first of all. Apostle means 1 cent on a
- 9:04mission with a message accountable to his sender, and
- 9:09he carries. The authority of his.
- 9:11Sender. So God, Jesus.
- 9:14Christ, as Paul said. Commanded me I'm.
- 9:16Apostle by Jesus Christ, and I'm apostle by the command.
- 9:20Of God himself I didn't just call myself an apostle and and
- 9:25we also understand that an apostle holds the.
- 9:27Office of Apostles ship. Jesus Christ himself.
- 9:30Held the office of apostleship. That was one of the other titles
- 9:34that Jesus had. If you would look in Hebrews
- 9:37chapter 3 and verse one it. Reads this way.
- 9:40It says. Therefore, holy brethren.
- 9:42Partakers of the heavenly calling consider the apostle and
- 9:46high priest of our confession, Christ Jesus.
- 9:50So Jesus, among other things, held.
- 9:52The title of Apostle. He is the lover.
- 9:56He's the apostle, the Bishop, and lover of our souls.
- 10:00So Jesus Christ was considered. An apostle.
- 10:02Because he was sent here by God his Father.
- 10:05And he was sent here with the message and the message.
- 10:08Was the gospel. Also want to make make it clear
- 10:13that when Jesus ascended. He gave gifts.
- 10:15To the church and one of those. Gifts that he gave to the
- 10:18church, was an apostle, was an apostle.
- 10:22If you would go. Back with me to Ephesians
- 10:24chapter. 4. Ephesians chapter 4, we're going
- 10:27to. Look at verse.
- 10:29I'm going to start right there. Verse. 11 And he says, And he
- 10:32himself meaning Jesus Christ, and he himself.
- 10:34Gave. Gave.
- 10:36Some to be apostles and this is what.
- 10:38He's talking about the. Gifts he.
- 10:39Gave to the church. He gave some to be.
- 10:42Apostles, some to be. Prophets, some evangelists, and
- 10:45some pastors and teachers. What did he give them for?
- 10:48For the equipping of the Saints? For the work of the ministry.
- 10:51For the. Edifying of the body.
- 10:53Of Christ. So we have these gifts.
- 10:56We have. Pastors and we have at when the
- 10:58church is being. Started.
- 10:59We had apostles. And prophets and they were.
- 11:02All for the purpose of. Equipping the body.
- 11:05To do the work. Of the ministry and that's what
- 11:08Clark and I and all the. Teachers that are here, that is
- 11:11what what our charge is to do is to equip the body to do the.
- 11:15Work of the ministry and the only way that we can equip.
- 11:18The body to do. The work of the.
- 11:20Ministry is to teach the true. Doctrine of Jesus Christ and the
- 11:24Apostles. That's the only way we can do
- 11:25that. If we teach mess, you won't be
- 11:28equipped. To do God's work, we have to
- 11:32teach the truth of the epistles. So now let's look at the
- 11:36qualifications of the Apostle. And Peter dealt with that.
- 11:39Peter dealt with the qualifications of the apostles.
- 11:41Back in Acts chapter 1 and you know, you can go back there with
- 11:45me if you choose, but I'm going to.
- 11:46Just read about that. Reference back in Acts chapter 1
- 11:49and this is. Exactly what it says.
- 11:51And we're going to look at verse 21.
- 11:53OK, now this is after. Judas had already betrayed
- 11:57Jesus. He betrayed.
- 11:59Jesus and he and he was now dead, and they were choosing
- 12:03somebody to. Fill his spot.
- 12:07In verse 21, Acts chapter one, verse 21, it reads this way,
- 12:10therefore, of these men because they're going to have.
- 12:14Another take that office and he says therefore.
- 12:16Of these men, and here come the qualifications who have.
- 12:19Accompanied us all the. Time that.
- 12:22The Lord Jesus. Went in and out among us,
- 12:26beginning from the baptism of John that day when he was taken
- 12:31up until the day he was taken up from US.
- 12:34One of these must become a witness.
- 12:37With us of his. Resurrection So what is he
- 12:41telling us there? Peter is telling us that an
- 12:44apostle must be an eyewitness of the ministry of.
- 12:50Jesus. Christ from the time.
- 12:52He was baptized. When the Holy Spirit came upon
- 12:57him, and he was. Baptized until.
- 12:59The time that he actually ascended, that's after his
- 13:01resurrection and he actually ascended, that is what?
- 13:06An apostle that's. One of the qualifications.
- 13:08Of the apostle now let's. Look, break it down.
- 13:11First of all, it had. To be somebody who was with him
- 13:13through. The whole three years.
- 13:15That he was among us because it had to be someone who was an
- 13:18eyewitness of Jesus baptism. That validated the fact that He
- 13:21was filled with the Holy Spirit by the Father.
- 13:24And it had to be someone who had.
- 13:26Heard the. Teachings and witnessed the
- 13:28healings and other miracles. That Jesus did.
- 13:32Someone had to witness that, and that was.
- 13:34Who the apostles were? It had to be someone who
- 13:37witnessed the. Sacrifice.
- 13:39When Jesus was sacrificed on that.
- 13:40Cross for our. Sins had to be someone who
- 13:44witnessed. That as well.
- 13:46And in addition to. That it had.
- 13:48To be someone that after his resurrection, actually witnessed
- 13:52Jesus. Talk.
- 13:53Walk around. And eat among the disciples
- 13:57again. After he was resurrected.
- 13:59Now these are just the facts. Of Jesus life.
- 14:01And it had to be witnessed because this is what the
- 14:03apostles were teaching. This is the foundation of what
- 14:07the apostles were teaching. And they were teaching these
- 14:09things. And This is why they were
- 14:10willing to give their. Lives for it.
- 14:13Because they were eyewitnesses, they know what they're saying
- 14:15was. True, I saw.
- 14:17It with my own eyes I ate with them you know we slept at the
- 14:23same campground I watched them do miracles I watched them do
- 14:29these things I heard his teachings so This is why we.
- 14:34Follow the apostles. Doctrine because they are
- 14:37eyewitnesses. Now that teaching that they did
- 14:40in the Church, that laid the foundation of the church.
- 14:44That is what the foundation of the Church is.
- 14:45Laid upon was those. Teachings and the.
- 14:47Apostles went out. And they began to teach and to
- 14:50share those things, and those things were laying the
- 14:52foundations. That's.
- 14:53Why they were followed? By signs and wonders.
- 14:56Because they were. Laying the foundation of the
- 14:58Church. The foundation of the Church
- 14:59only needs to be laid once. Folks, it only.
- 15:02Needs to be laid once. No one comes back to your house
- 15:04to lay the foundation of your house more than once.
- 15:07They lay it once. Everything else is built upon
- 15:10that house. So Jesus Christ already laid
- 15:13the. Foundation of the Church.
- 15:15With the apostles. There's no need for another.
- 15:18Group of. Apostles to come and lay another
- 15:20foundation. There's no need that's.
- 15:22Why? We don't have the.
- 15:25Apostles. The way they were in the old.
- 15:28Before the way they used to be. We don't have those apostles
- 15:31now. We may have people who are doing
- 15:33the ministry of apostles. That means they go to these
- 15:37remote places and they're sharing the gospel.
- 15:39They're called missionaries today.
- 15:41They go to remote places and they share the.
- 15:43Gospel. They take the gospel to places
- 15:44that. People would never heard it.
- 15:46OK, they're called missionaries today.
- 15:48That's. Kind of what the apostles did.
- 15:50But no one is considered. But they're not today.
- 15:52People aren't considered. To be apostle.
- 15:54So anyway, I just wanted to deal with that and I also wanted to
- 15:58if you look. Here it's kind of subtle.
- 15:59But there is a point to this and where it says here Paul an
- 16:02apostle. Of Jesus Christ by the.
- 16:04Commandment of God our. Savior.
- 16:08There's a reason why he made sure that he mentioned the word
- 16:11God. Our.
- 16:11Savior, and that is because. Back at this particular.
- 16:14Time Caesar Nero was running wrong and he was commanding and
- 16:19demanding people to call him savior.
- 16:22And Paul said no, no, no, no, no.
- 16:23There's only one savior. Jesus Christ, our hope, that is
- 16:28our Savior. And that's the reason why Paul
- 16:31made it necessary to do that. So then we go on and he said,
- 16:35Timothy, our true son, Well, we know that he calls him a true
- 16:38son in the faith and not true son in the flesh.
- 16:41He's true son in the faith because.
- 16:42It was Paul that. Begot Timothy in the faith.
- 16:46It was through. Paul's first missionary journey
- 16:48when he came to the Lystra that him and his family heard.
- 16:51The Gospel of Jesus. Christ and they became believers
- 16:55and he continued to walk in the way of Christianity.
- 16:59And when Paul came back the second time?
- 17:02He actually chose. Timothy to go with him, because
- 17:05Timothy had a good report among those who were there.
- 17:08At Lystra. The Men and the.
- 17:10Elders of Lystra could. Testify that Timothy was a true
- 17:14man of. God, he followed the.
- 17:15Doctrines. He followed the teaching of the
- 17:18doctrines of the apostles. He didn't waver.
- 17:20So, you know, he went with Paul at that particular time.
- 17:24You know, it's very important that as men of God, I'm going to
- 17:26challenge. Us, all of us, as men of.
- 17:29God, it's very important that we.
- 17:31Bigot. Sons in the Faith.
- 17:35That we disciple other. Young men and be an example to
- 17:40these young men in the. Faith to have a.
- 17:43Son, in the faith, very important that we do that.
- 17:46That we have. Someone that we are pouring
- 17:48into, if anyone's like me, most men I know in my community, most
- 17:53men like Timothy because it wasn't Timothy's.
- 17:56Father that poured. Into him in the faith.
- 17:59It was Timothy's mother, Eunice, and his grandmother, Lois.
- 18:03He had two. Strong women of God.
- 18:05Who were of the faith that poured?
- 18:07Into him when he was young and they taught him the scriptures
- 18:11and that's where he learned the scriptures.
- 18:13Most of the men in my community learn the scriptures and learn
- 18:17the things of the Lord from the women in our lives.
- 18:19It was my mother and my grandmother, my sisters who
- 18:22taught me, taught me the things of the Lord.
- 18:25They were the ones who prayed for me to get into the church.
- 18:28And probably we'd have. Asked for a hand.
- 18:30Raising most homes, unfortunately most homes that
- 18:34are not two parent homes and maybe some that are two parent
- 18:37homes they may have an unbelieving father in that house
- 18:40and it's the women are the ones who are the.
- 18:44Examples and share Christ with the children.
- 18:47The women so I. First of all.
- 18:51Definitely want to challenge our men that we be the priests and
- 18:54the pastors and the protectors of our home and we be the one
- 18:56that leading the home of spiritual matters.
- 18:59But women, if there's not a man in the house, there's no excuse
- 19:03that children. Can't get the gospel?
- 19:06You can. Still share the gospel?
- 19:08With your children, rather you have a husband that's in the
- 19:10house or an unbelieving husband that's in the house or not.
- 19:15And Timothy was a good example of that.
- 19:17So that's who Timothy was. He was his true son in the
- 19:21faith. And that true son means that he
- 19:23was a legitimate child, faithful.
- 19:26Child of Paul with all of the. Rights and privileges of that
- 19:29family. Paul recognized the ministry
- 19:31that was in Timothy. OK, so so then we continue to go
- 19:36and he says grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and
- 19:40Jesus. Christ our Lord.
- 19:42And now verse 3. This is when things start to
- 19:44move. A little faster in verse three,
- 19:46he says, I urged you. When I went into Macedonia.
- 19:51I urged you to. Remain in Ephesus, that you may
- 19:54charge some or command some, that they teach no other
- 19:57doctrines, nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies
- 20:01which cause disputes rather than godly edification, which is in
- 20:06the faith. Paul says.
- 20:08Timothy, I want you to remain. In Ephesus, I want you to remain
- 20:14there because Paul sent Timothy back to Ephesus.
- 20:17To encourage that church. He sent them back there to
- 20:21become the the pastor of the church in Ephesus after Paul and
- 20:25the other. Apostles have established that
- 20:27church. And he said I'm sending you
- 20:28back. There so that you.
- 20:30Can be the. Pastor of that church.
- 20:32Apparently things started to get.
- 20:34Really sticky there. Uncomfortable for Timothy,
- 20:39Timothy started to feel. That they were.
- 20:41Not respecting him because of his youth.
- 20:44He was young, he started to feel that they were bringing in other
- 20:48doctrines over top of him and and things was just really bad
- 20:51there and Timothy really was struggling to stay.
- 20:54There, you know, there's a lot of pastors.
- 20:57On a weekly basis, who want to walk?
- 20:59Out of their pulpits or just quit.
- 21:02Because of the anxieties. That they.
- 21:04Experienced because of the. Pressures that they.
- 21:06Experienced that still goes on today.
- 21:09But. Paul said Timothy remained.
- 21:12There, stay there. Do what the Lord has called you
- 21:17to do. Get your eyes off the people.
- 21:19Get your eyes. Off of the mess and put your
- 21:22eyes on the Lord. That's what we do, which is the
- 21:26same thing you do if you're on your job and you got people who
- 21:29are harassing you because you on the job and and they can make.
- 21:31It very uncomfortable to. Even want to come back to work
- 21:34sometimes. But hey, you get your eyes.
- 21:36On the Lord and not on them. Pray for them, pray for them,
- 21:41but put your eyes on the Lord and He.
- 21:44Will work it out. He works it out.
- 21:46And that's exactly what Timothy had.
- 21:49To do, Paul said. Remained there and not only
- 21:52remainder, but this is what I want you to do, Timothy.
- 21:55I want you to command them that they teach no other doctrine.
- 21:59There shouldn't be any other doctrines being taught there,
- 22:01Timothy. The only doctrine that should.
- 22:04Be taught there should be the. Doctrine that you received from
- 22:07myself, that they received from you, me and and Silas when we
- 22:11were there from the. Apostles, which is the.
- 22:13Doctrine that we received from Jesus Christ.
- 22:15That's the only doctrine that should be taught.
- 22:18We know that today. There's all kind of.
- 22:20Different doctrines that are trying to come into the church.
- 22:23And that's why the pulpit has to be a guarded area.
- 22:26In terms of for Sundays or Wednesday nights for.
- 22:29Us, we guard that. You know, just just not anybody.
- 22:33Just come up and start teaching. You know, the Bible says, you
- 22:36know, lay hands on no man suddenly, right?
- 22:39And we got to know those who labor among us.
- 22:41I mean, you know that there are there are people who can bring
- 22:44in strange doctrines. And I do have a couple, just a
- 22:47few. I just want to mention just a
- 22:48few doctrines that that do come into the church.
- 22:51These are some of these new age things that are.
- 22:53That are popping up everywhere. You know, there's a there's a
- 22:56religion gospel. OK, this is like another gospel.
- 22:59This teaches that we are saved by our works if you do this.
- 23:03Or if you don't do that, then Jesus.
- 23:05Will love you. And save you.
- 23:08OK, that's a religion gospel. That's bondage.
- 23:11That's the gospel of bondage. OK, that.
- 23:14Is not the true. Gospel We are saved by grace.
- 23:17We're not saved by our works. We're saved by grace through
- 23:20faith. It's not about what you can do
- 23:24for God or can't. Do it's about what he did for.
- 23:26Us Amen. There's a moralism gospel and
- 23:29that teaches that the point that the gospel is to make us.
- 23:32Good people. How often do we?
- 23:34Hear that? Oh, he's a good, he's a good
- 23:36person. She's a good person.
- 23:38That may be so, but if you don't believe in Jesus Christ, you
- 23:40ain't going to heaven. Maybe so.
- 23:45They think that they're saved just by being good, decent,
- 23:47immoral people. And again, we know that that's
- 23:50not the case. No one is good.
- 23:52Bible says no one is. Good except God.
