- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the ned Palty.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hi. This is Nick and Astasu, story editor on Star Wars,
- 0:10Speaker 2: the Clone Wars and Star Wars bad Batch. And you
- 0:14Speaker 2: are listening to Aggressive Negotiations.
- 0:23Speaker 3: That's right, you are listening to Aggressive Negotiations the Star
- 0:27Speaker 3: Wars podcast that does things just a little bit differently
- 0:31Speaker 3: here as we navigate everywhere in between from the inner
- 0:35Speaker 3: Rim to the outer Rim, to the mid Rim, to
- 0:37Speaker 3: the top rim to the bottom rim, all types of rims,
- 0:39Speaker 3: all throughout the galaxy or what we're talking about here
- 0:42Speaker 3: for Star Wars. I am Jedi Master John Mills and
- 0:46Speaker 3: joining me for a discussion about the fifth episode of
- 0:50Speaker 3: and Or season one, Jedi Master Matthew Rushing. Matt, are
- 0:55Speaker 3: you ready to talk about the next chapter in the
- 0:57Speaker 3: Adventures on al Donnie?
- 1:00Speaker 4: Can you pass the blue milk? I need some more
- 1:02Speaker 4: from my course on pops. These are Oh my gosh,
- 1:05Speaker 4: they are so good. How are you not eating these
- 1:07Speaker 4: right now?
- 1:07Speaker 1: John?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Well, you know I always was more partial to Sithberry.
- 1:14Speaker 3: It's a less popular brand, but I find it's that
- 1:16Speaker 3: little putting the pop rocks inside the cereal to give
- 1:21Speaker 3: you the feeling of force lightning on your tongue. I
- 1:23Speaker 3: really really enjoy it a great deal. But I also
- 1:27Speaker 3: enjoy people going over to Apple Podcasts giving us a
- 1:30Speaker 3: star rating and review. It's so little, so little. We
- 1:33Speaker 3: we're givers. We love to give. We give this show
- 1:36Speaker 3: to you regularly. We'd love it if you gave us
- 1:39Speaker 3: some attention over on Apple Podcasts. You know, just drop
- 1:42Speaker 3: us a rating and review, or even just a rating.
- 1:44Speaker 3: What do you feel like doing? We appreciate it. Something
- 1:47Speaker 3: else we appreciate is that every so often we come
- 1:50Speaker 3: across a series or a show where the negotiations do
- 1:53Speaker 3: in fact get aggressive. And and Or has been one
- 1:57Speaker 3: of those instances so far. I don't know it's the
- 2:00Speaker 3: Rogue one magic because Rogue one us had us thrown
- 2:05Speaker 3: down with each other, and then you know, the first
- 2:08Speaker 3: arc of and and Or has us thrown down. We
- 2:10Speaker 3: found a little bit more common ground with you know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: episode four of season one, Matt. Okay, So coming in
- 2:19Speaker 3: now we have our bridge episode, our middle episode of
- 2:22Speaker 3: the trilogy. Here, this is our empire strikes back of
- 2:25Speaker 3: the al Donni trilogy coming into it. Were you looking
- 2:30Speaker 3: forward to hitting this episode? Did it hit the same notes?
- 2:34Speaker 3: Let's get us started here?
- 2:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean what I find personally interesting about this
- 2:40Speaker 4: episode is the way in which, because we're doing this
- 2:47Speaker 4: heist on Al Donnie and you know, the beginning episode
- 2:53Speaker 4: for this which was titled Al Donnie, we don't actually
- 2:58Speaker 4: really get to spend a ton of time there with
- 3:00Speaker 4: the entire crew that's going to be trying to pull
- 3:03Speaker 4: off this heist, and so this episode really allows us
- 3:07Speaker 4: to kind of get an opportunity to know them. And
- 3:10Speaker 4: in some ways, I think what makes this episode most
- 3:14Speaker 4: fascinating and most important to the series is it really
- 3:18Speaker 4: introduces us to the key theme of the entire series,
- 3:22Speaker 4: which is that everybody has their own rebellion, and so
- 3:26Speaker 4: that every single person who is in the rebellion has
- 3:29Speaker 4: a reason for which they have turned on the Empire.
- 3:33Speaker 4: And to me, that's incredibly interesting because it's so true, right, like,
- 3:40Speaker 4: we all have our different reasons for joining things or
- 3:43Speaker 4: being a part of things, and especially something of this magnitude.
- 3:48Speaker 4: And so that's the thing that really stood out to me,
- 3:53Speaker 4: especially in rewatching this episode and then on you know,
- 3:58Speaker 4: on top of that, I think the other thing that
- 4:01Speaker 4: really stands out is the fact that you have Keras
- 4:05Speaker 4: is you know, talking about you know, his basically dissertation
- 4:10Speaker 4: his manifesto about rebellion, and the thoughts that he has
- 4:15Speaker 4: are incredibly interesting as to why he believes the Empire
- 4:18Speaker 4: has been able to sustain power so easily for so long.
- 4:23Speaker 4: And those are the two things in this episode that
- 4:26Speaker 4: really always jump out to me in a rewatch. And again,
- 4:32Speaker 4: I think in some ways those both kind of come
- 4:38Speaker 4: out the the idea of rebellion in different ways, because
- 4:44Speaker 4: you know, the whole manifesto idea allows us to be
- 4:47Speaker 4: able to have an understanding as to why people have
- 4:52Speaker 4: finally gotten wise to the Empire, which has led them
- 4:55Speaker 4: to have their own rebellious reasons for actually joining something
- 5:01Speaker 4: more formal.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Uh.
- 5:02Speaker 4: And so I don't know, what about what about you?
- 5:04Speaker 2: With this episode?
- 5:06Speaker 3: Well, I was looking forward to seeing it because you know,
- 5:09Speaker 3: as everybody knows by this point who's been listening, you
- 5:12Speaker 3: know my struggles with the first three fourth one. I
- 5:15Speaker 3: was like, oh, okay, cool, I'm digging what's going on here.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Didn't love the fact that we spent time with uh,
- 5:23Speaker 3: you know, Captain Tight Outfit the Ciral two Shoes, Yeah, Cyril,
- 5:28Speaker 3: that's the guy, which is weird.
- 5:30Speaker 4: They cereal, And so I wonder if that's how they
- 5:33Speaker 4: named him in all honesty, probably so probably it sounds
- 5:37Speaker 4: like George would have done right, Like that's a completely
- 5:40Speaker 4: George Lucas naming convention, like.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Uh yeah, yeah, or you ask a kid what they
- 5:45Speaker 3: call a corn fitter exactly.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So I think that, Uh.
- 5:52Speaker 3: I was, you know, looking forward to coming into this.
- 5:54Speaker 3: And I understand and appreciate everything you're saying about everybody
- 5:58Speaker 3: having their own reason for rebellion, and I think that
- 6:02Speaker 3: is very important when you're seeing something coming together like
- 6:06Speaker 3: this and not everybody's coming together for this monolithic cause
- 6:11Speaker 3: it's too easy for now. You know, the movies are big,
- 6:14Speaker 3: The movies are supposed to act like fairy tales. The
- 6:16Speaker 3: good guys are the good guys, the bad guys are
- 6:18Speaker 3: the bad guys. And the shows are where you start
- 6:20Speaker 3: to get into the gray area and explore a little
- 6:22Speaker 3: bit more of you know, quote unquote real life, what
- 6:25Speaker 3: it's like for average people. All of that positive said,
- 6:28Speaker 3: I had struggles with this episode again with the way
- 6:33Speaker 3: that it intercut certain things. I just don't care for
- 6:37Speaker 3: following Cyril's story, and it's when he was on screen.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I remember the first time I saw it, I thought
- 6:46Speaker 3: that the cereal was clever. I thought that was cute.
- 6:49Speaker 3: I thought that having recognizable fruits on the table that
- 6:53Speaker 3: she pushes over toward him was cute seeing a you know,
- 6:56Speaker 3: he's the product of a domineering mother. Okay, that's cool.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I just don't like following the character, and I would
- 7:03Speaker 3: have preferred if this episode had stayed much more focused
- 7:07Speaker 3: and Cyril doesn't get a lot of screen time here.
- 7:09Speaker 1: That's the funny thing.
- 7:10Speaker 3: It seems like such a a weird thing to quibble about,
- 7:13Speaker 3: but I would have preferred a different rhythm with Dedra
- 7:16Speaker 3: and maybe even spending a little more time with Isb,
- 7:19Speaker 3: because that's more relevant to what's going on on Aldonni
- 7:22Speaker 3: at this point. No, her sitting there and everything going
- 7:27Speaker 3: on with the ISB way more relevant with my A
- 7:31Speaker 3: plot over here, and so the C plot is yet again,
- 7:34Speaker 3: I'm like, Okay, do I really have to be here
- 7:36Speaker 3: with this right now?
- 7:39Speaker 2: No?
- 7:39Speaker 4: I mean I this is a place where I think
- 7:42Speaker 4: we agree, and part of that is both of us
- 7:46Speaker 4: also knowing that in the future in this season, we
- 7:51Speaker 4: still I don't feel like completely understand as why we're
- 7:54Speaker 4: following this character right Like, there's no clear answer by
- 7:58Speaker 4: the end of this season, and so I'm with you,
- 8:02Speaker 4: I'm glad he got little screen time. I mean, I
- 8:05Speaker 4: in some ways it is kind of a fascinating thing
- 8:08Speaker 4: just to watch, because, like you said, he's got this
- 8:10Speaker 4: dominating mother, and he's got this you know, he can
- 8:14Speaker 4: never do anything to blease her enough, and so he's
- 8:17Speaker 4: basically just kind of fed up with her in that sense.
- 8:23Speaker 4: And it also, I mean, the one aspect that does
- 8:26Speaker 4: make him somewhat interesting is the way in which, you know,
- 8:32Speaker 4: his mom doesn't really care what he's involved in. She
- 8:36Speaker 4: just wants to look good as a byproduct of whatever
- 8:39Speaker 4: he's involved in. So he could be an imperial agent,
- 8:42Speaker 4: you know, he was obviously corporate security, all this stuff,
- 8:46Speaker 4: and so I do find that to be an interesting idea.
- 8:53Speaker 4: But I don't necessarily think this. This is probably the
- 8:57Speaker 4: only place in this season where.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It's just it.
- 9:02Speaker 4: It never quite comes together, I don't think, and even
- 9:08Speaker 4: in this episode, of course, and I also don't I
- 9:12Speaker 4: don't know if maybe it's just executed well enough to
- 9:16Speaker 4: maybe bring home those salient points that I'm kind of
- 9:20Speaker 4: thinking of. But that's also because I've seen the show
- 9:22Speaker 4: a few times now, and so no. I mean, I
- 9:27Speaker 4: can't really disagree with you. I think you're in, you know,
- 9:31Speaker 4: completely right about this. It's just a strange storyline that
- 9:34Speaker 4: never quite seems to gel with all the other storylines,
- 9:38Speaker 4: which very much seem to intercut perfectly right, you know,
- 9:44Speaker 4: as you watch all of these different characters and their
- 9:47Speaker 4: struggles either in the Imperial system or you know, working
- 9:54Speaker 4: to fight against it on different levels, and the reasons why,
- 9:57Speaker 4: and those things all inter so well, and then you
- 10:01Speaker 4: have this story of the guy just trying to you know,
- 10:04Speaker 4: just a simple guy trying to make his way into universe.
- 10:06Speaker 4: And it's not all that exciting.
- 10:08Speaker 3: I mean, the thing is, we all know that everybody
- 10:11Speaker 3: on the face of the planet loves to play sort
- 10:13Speaker 3: of like phantom writer's room. It's like, well, if I
- 10:15Speaker 3: were in the writer's room, this is what I would
- 10:17Speaker 3: have said. But I can honestly tell you keeps hero
- 10:20Speaker 3: on the show. Fine, keep him on Ferys and have
- 10:23Speaker 3: him become the butt of people's jokes. Have him also
- 10:27Speaker 3: go through some some sort of like PTSD stuff from
- 10:29Speaker 3: the battle where you see him shaken to his core.
- 10:32Speaker 3: He doesn't know what he believes anymore. The ISB shows
- 10:35Speaker 3: up treats him like dirt, and then he is trying
- 10:40Speaker 3: to screw up the courage to like, you know, shake
- 10:42Speaker 3: it off and become a person again. And then ironically
- 10:47Speaker 3: he saves Ddre at the end because he's trying to
- 10:48Speaker 3: be a hero, and it's like, that's I think that's
- 10:52Speaker 3: a more interesting arc.
- 10:54Speaker 5: I don't.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't give two hoots about that.
- 10:57Speaker 3: I think another challenge with the episode, even though I
- 11:01Speaker 3: understand its place, is that the mon Mothma stuff is necessary,
- 11:07Speaker 3: but doesn't fit necessarily with the energy of the rest
- 11:14Speaker 3: of the episode, where I know why I'm with her,
- 11:18Speaker 3: I know why I need to be with her, but
- 11:20Speaker 3: as a result, it winds up feeling at times a
- 11:23Speaker 3: bit perfunctory, where it's like, Okay, well we got to
- 11:25Speaker 3: do this, and it's like eh, again, getting back to
- 11:29Speaker 3: that hole in a movie. I'm probably more patient with it,
- 11:33Speaker 3: but within the contained arc of a show, a single episode,
- 11:39Speaker 3: you know, I'm not dismissive of it, but I'm like, eh,
- 11:42Speaker 3: this doesn't feel it doesn't feel as organic as the.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Rest of it.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Like those other two plot lines very organic, and then
- 11:50Speaker 3: these other two bits don't feel as organic too.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Me. Yeah, I mean I guess that I would definitely
- 11:56Speaker 4: disagree with that, because I find that part of the
- 11:59Speaker 4: storyline really interesting and I think it really does fit
- 12:04Speaker 4: because this pivotal character to the rebellion and its success
- 12:09Speaker 4: in the first place, her battle in her own family
- 12:13Speaker 4: is having a family that doesn't care, you know, and
- 12:17Speaker 4: doesn't even really even seem to like her, which is
- 12:20Speaker 4: kind of a fascinating thing.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And so.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I really and and yet the reason that she's doing
- 12:31Speaker 4: this is because she thinks it's best for everyone her
- 12:34Speaker 4: family involved, even if they don't care. And in some ways,
- 12:38Speaker 4: because each of these seasons is basically just one big
- 12:41Speaker 4: long story, like most prestige television is these days, Like
- 12:46Speaker 4: I just don't I don't have any issue with that,
- 12:48Speaker 4: I mean, and that that's just the way prestige television
- 12:51Speaker 4: is told, and so I am. I'm fine with it.
- 12:57Speaker 4: And part of that is because this goes somewhere very interesting,
- 13:00Speaker 4: because because the storyline for man Matha and her family
- 13:03Speaker 4: is going to get very personal as per what she
- 13:07Speaker 4: feels like she has to do in order to get
- 13:10Speaker 4: what she needs done later on, and so you need
- 13:14Speaker 4: these scenes to kind of set all this up, this
- 13:16Speaker 4: family drama, which is actually going to play out on
- 13:19Speaker 4: the larger scale, and so the micro becomes the macro
- 13:23Speaker 4: very quickly for them.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Yeah, but again.
- 13:28Speaker 4: It's like the serial story is the one where I'm
- 13:30Speaker 4: like totally with you in that sense where it's like
- 13:32Speaker 4: it just never goes anywhere, and so it doesn't ever
- 13:35Speaker 4: really redeem itself for me.
- 13:37Speaker 3: But the thing is, Man math was story fine. Interesting, Yes,
- 13:41Speaker 3: And like I said, I understand why I'm seeing it.
- 13:43Speaker 3: I understand why I need to. I just don't think
- 13:45Speaker 3: it matches the energy of the rest of it. And
- 13:47Speaker 3: I think it has this unfortunate position of needing to
- 13:52Speaker 3: be there, and it's just it's a gear that doesn't
- 13:57Speaker 3: catch quite the same way within the context of the episode.
- 14:00Speaker 3: And I think that overall that that is a detraction
- 14:04Speaker 3: from it because it interrupts that energy. And you know,
- 14:09Speaker 3: maybe it's a testament to the fact that the stuff
- 14:10Speaker 3: that's going on in al Donnie does have my interest,
- 14:13Speaker 3: the stuff going on with Dedra does have my interest,
- 14:17Speaker 3: and it's just that the way that the mon Mathma
- 14:19Speaker 3: stuff comes in again, I understand what it's saying, I
- 14:22Speaker 3: understand why it's there. I understand how long form television works.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And everything.
- 14:27Speaker 3: It just it winds up interrupting this specific episode in
- 14:33Speaker 3: such a way that I think it just has the
- 14:35Speaker 3: unfortunate position of being necessary but difficult.
- 14:39Speaker 4: I guess in the thing though that I don't understand
- 14:43Speaker 4: is like what do you want from it? Like what
- 14:46Speaker 4: I mean if you understand that it's necessary and everything,
- 14:49Speaker 4: Like I'm trying to understand exactly what would make this
- 14:54Speaker 4: work better for you. I again we both agree on
- 14:56Speaker 4: like how the serial stuff like you could probably cut
- 14:59Speaker 4: that out of this episode and not feel like you
- 15:01Speaker 4: miss anything.
- 15:02Speaker 3: And even prestige long form tell if it's prestige long
- 15:06Speaker 3: form is to the end?
- 15:07Speaker 4: Does already mentioned is that in the end, Yes, he
- 15:12Speaker 4: has an important moment back as this this this season ends,
- 15:18Speaker 4: but the storyline for him getting there feels so not
- 15:22Speaker 4: worth having followed.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Probably probably What I'd say is this is that the
- 15:28Speaker 3: mon Mothmas stuff probably could have been put together like
- 15:33Speaker 3: in more of a.
- 15:36Speaker 1: More of a bubble throughout.
- 15:37Speaker 3: The episode, like it's it, it's chunked out in a
- 15:40Speaker 3: way you could have condensed it so that it all
- 15:43Speaker 3: occurs closer together. In terms of the actual cutting of everything,
- 15:49Speaker 3: the inter cutting of everything that's I put that there
- 15:52Speaker 3: like that, right, like, instead of having it spread out,
- 15:57Speaker 3: which they do with Cyril here too, where it's like, oh, okay,
- 16:00Speaker 3: you know what if this is a necessary but you know,
- 16:02Speaker 3: not the same sort of like vibe of the other two.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Take it and make it like a chapter break where
- 16:08Speaker 3: it's like I turn my attention over here and I
- 16:10Speaker 3: spend my time over here, and then I turn back
- 16:13Speaker 3: and keep with the other stuff that's going forward.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and I I don't agree because I feel
- 16:20Speaker 4: like the vibe of all of the storylines fits in
- 16:23Speaker 4: the sense that this is the this is the percolation
- 16:27Speaker 4: of the storylines, and so every one of them is percolating. Again,
- 16:32Speaker 4: I don't love the serial storyline because I just don't
- 16:35Speaker 4: find it interesting, just like you. But it's like the
- 16:38Speaker 4: Monmathma stuff I do find interesting, And just like what's
- 16:42Speaker 4: happening on Aldani, which is this kind of like things
- 16:45Speaker 4: are at that they're getting close to boiling point, you know,
- 16:50Speaker 4: at the same time that's happening with the ISB stuff
- 16:53Speaker 4: that's also happening within this family, and so all of
- 16:57Speaker 4: that feels like to me, it fits level wise when
- 17:02Speaker 4: I cut in between and so what you're saying is
- 17:05Speaker 4: that you just don't feel that that same vibe shift
- 17:09Speaker 4: or I guess energy shift, Like it feels like that
- 17:12Speaker 4: maybe that storyline's low energy for you and you wanted
- 17:15Speaker 4: it to be feel more in line with the other
- 17:19Speaker 4: energy you're getting for the other storylines. Is that what
- 17:21Speaker 4: I'm hearing?
- 17:23Speaker 3: Yeah, sort of, But like what I was saying a
- 17:25Speaker 3: minute ago, right, like, take it and instead of putting
- 17:29Speaker 3: pieces throughout the episode, come back and have it all
- 17:33Speaker 3: yeah as a chapter break where it's like I get
- 17:36Speaker 3: my setup, I get my time on all Donnie, I
- 17:38Speaker 3: get maybe a check in with with Dedra, and then
- 17:40Speaker 3: I come back and I spend time with man Mathma
- 17:42Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh, okay, this is all going on
- 17:44Speaker 3: while Donnie's going on and Deezer's doing her thing, and
- 17:48Speaker 3: then I turn my attention back. Keep in mind I'm
- 17:50Speaker 3: leaving Cyril out of this equation completely well.
- 17:53Speaker 4: And that I in some ways like they kind of
- 17:57Speaker 4: tried to do that. I feel like with the season
- 18:00Speaker 4: three of The Mandalorian, and I felt like it was
- 18:03Speaker 4: terrible because there was that whole episode that they just
- 18:06Speaker 4: all of a sudden, it takes place all the way
- 18:08Speaker 4: over on Courissant and you're like, no, no, no, no, no,
- 18:10Speaker 4: But to me, I guess what. I'm just trying to
- 18:15Speaker 4: point out. I like the inner cutting of the stories
- 18:19Speaker 4: this way more than I do something where things are
- 18:24Speaker 4: more partitioned.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Look, this is this is such quippling. And I know
- 18:28Speaker 3: there's somebody out there shouting at their speakers right now.
- 18:32Speaker 3: So I'm just gonna say again, you can even have
- 18:35Speaker 3: your mom motha stuff in here. No, I within the
- 18:38Speaker 3: context of the specific episode. I'm just saying, keep it
- 18:40Speaker 3: closer to you. I'm not saying go to Chorissant and
- 18:43Speaker 3: break the entire flow of the entire show or the
- 18:46Speaker 3: entire arc.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Or anything like.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Now I'm saying, I get what you're saying, chapter breaks.
- 18:50Speaker 4: I'm just kind of like, what I'm saying is that
- 18:54Speaker 4: I I don't have a problem with the flow.
- 18:58Speaker 3: So again, it's it's not it's it's not the flow
- 19:03Speaker 3: I'm talking about, like the the you know what I've
- 19:07Speaker 3: spoken ill yet again of a chapter having to do
- 19:10Speaker 3: with the great Holy writ of Tony Gilroy's.
- 19:13Speaker 5: And Okay, you're making fun of me, but I'm.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Like, we we agree obviously on points of this, but
- 19:22Speaker 4: we disagree on other points of the editing of the episode,
- 19:27Speaker 4: and and so.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Don't get don't get me into trouble with like talking
- 19:31Speaker 3: about the editing. I'm just saying it could have been
- 19:33Speaker 3: group closer together. I'm not talking about like swapping this
- 19:36Speaker 3: shot for that shot or trimming a second off.
- 19:39Speaker 4: But I know what I'm saying is, but that what
- 19:42Speaker 4: we're talking about in the end is the editing of
- 19:45Speaker 4: the episode because it's the way in which they havecro
- 19:49Speaker 4: they have connected the different story points, and so you're
- 19:53Speaker 4: wanting the editing to have the storylines for each different
- 19:58Speaker 4: section be a little bit you know, more condensed together
- 20:02Speaker 4: than kind of spread out throughout the entire episode where
- 20:05Speaker 4: we just kind of.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Just just that specific one, just that specific one, is
- 20:09Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 20:10Speaker 4: Yes, which I get what you're saying, and I feel
- 20:14Speaker 4: like that would feel even weirder, like if you did that,
- 20:18Speaker 4: it would be like.
- 20:18Speaker 3: What it does. It doesn't it doesn't need to be
- 20:21Speaker 3: a ten or fifteen minute chunk. I'm saying, you could
- 20:24Speaker 3: have been restructured overall, you know so well.
- 20:28Speaker 4: I think too that that would be harder for that one,
- 20:31Speaker 4: because really you're that storyline because we don't spend a
- 20:34Speaker 4: ton of time with mont Mathma in this episode, and
- 20:37Speaker 4: so because really it's just snapshots of what's happening in
- 20:41Speaker 4: her life with her family specifically here to que us
- 20:45Speaker 4: in so that you know, anyway, as we get later
- 20:50Speaker 4: we have the context. And so yeah, I'm not you
- 20:54Speaker 4: would have had to actually I think shoot more with
- 20:56Speaker 4: her rather than less to make what you're asking for work.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Possibly, but maybe it would have worked.
- 21:02Speaker 4: But I know, and so I mean, probably you know
- 21:04Speaker 4: it might have worked better for you, But.
- 21:07Speaker 3: I know, I know I'm not the only person on
- 21:09Speaker 3: the planet that you know what. Reach out to me
- 21:12Speaker 3: at Matt Rushing zero two on Twitter, yes, and let
- 21:15Speaker 3: me know you know what, you know, whether you agree
- 21:18Speaker 3: with with those of us, because I know there's.
- 21:20Speaker 4: I mean, you can or you can tell me, you
- 21:22Speaker 4: know at Kessel Junkie why he's wrong and and and
- 21:26Speaker 4: especially if you're read Nicodemus, you can tell him why
- 21:31Speaker 4: he's wrong and why the editing here is actually correct
- 21:33Speaker 4: instead of wrong.
- 21:34Speaker 3: And so there's there's a there's a big problem here
- 21:38Speaker 3: in that uh, Matt at Kessel Junkie is for the
- 21:42Speaker 3: next forty days not going to be on social media,
- 21:45Speaker 3: So don't bother saying anything to him. In fact, if
- 21:48Speaker 3: you're angry, go to my account at matt Russian zero
- 21:52Speaker 3: two and come after me. Come after me hard, I mean,
- 21:55Speaker 3: cuss me out.
- 21:56Speaker 4: I see, I see how it is you you give
- 21:59Speaker 4: up this for lent and then throw the shade at me.
- 22:02Speaker 4: I got it. I see how this is working.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Okay, you know what I'm giving. Like I said at
- 22:07Speaker 3: the beginning, we're givers.
- 22:09Speaker 1: I'm giving this.
- 22:10Speaker 4: So I wanted to ask you, though I did want
- 22:12Speaker 4: to go because the whole idea of this manifesto, which
- 22:19Speaker 4: kind of drives this whole thought process of underpinning the
- 22:24Speaker 4: entire thematic elements of this show in general, as to
- 22:29Speaker 4: the reason for rebellion and all of that, I wanted
- 22:34Speaker 4: to ask you about that because to me, I remember
- 22:36Speaker 4: seeing this show for the first time and being very
- 22:41Speaker 4: surprised that we were really going to kind of dig in,
- 22:45Speaker 4: you know, this philosophically, because you know, apart from the
- 22:52Speaker 4: theology of Star Wars with like the force and stuff,
- 22:56Speaker 4: we don't tend to dive in this philosophically. And so
- 23:02Speaker 4: what did you end up thinking of that, especially here
- 23:04Speaker 4: on the rewatch?
- 23:07Speaker 1: I mean, I think the manifesto stuff is interesting. I
- 23:09Speaker 1: think that.
- 23:11Speaker 3: The I'm not going to keep the character names you
- 23:15Speaker 3: know throughout, but you know, I thought the character who
- 23:18Speaker 3: who you know who basically has that that conversation with
- 23:22Speaker 3: and Or where it's like, we're too reliant on imperial
- 23:24Speaker 3: technology when you should know how to fix our own stuff,
- 23:27Speaker 3: and this is my manifesto in here.
- 23:29Speaker 1: That sort of thing, I think it's very interesting.
- 23:32Speaker 3: The tough thing that I can't get out of my
- 23:34Speaker 3: brain right now is I started to see shades not
- 23:37Speaker 3: because of that character, but because of that interaction where
- 23:41Speaker 3: he starts talking about life in the world and stuff
- 23:44Speaker 3: like that. I suddenly saw, and I don't know if
- 23:48Speaker 3: you you might have seen the same sort of thing,
- 23:51Speaker 3: but there's a very there's a similar vibe to the
- 23:56Speaker 3: crew of the nebuchad Nezer in the Matrix, to this
- 24:00Speaker 3: rebel cell with and Or as Neo, and I like,
- 24:08Speaker 3: for some reason it hit me this time where I
- 24:10Speaker 3: suddenly saw the scene where they're all sitting around the
- 24:15Speaker 3: dinner not dinner but the mess table, and that the
- 24:19Speaker 3: young kid, the idealist in the Matrix is sitting there saying,
- 24:24Speaker 3: you ever notice how it tastes like He's like, everything
- 24:26Speaker 3: tastes like chicken because it couldn't figure out what everything
- 24:28Speaker 3: tasted like, so it just made everything taste like chicken.
- 24:33Speaker 1: I got a similar vibe to that. That's not a knock.
- 24:35Speaker 1: It's not a knock.
- 24:36Speaker 3: I'm just saying, like, I saw shades of that, which
- 24:38Speaker 3: was interesting to me.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I had not thought about that, and I do
- 24:42Speaker 4: think that that's an interesting read. I would not have
- 24:47Speaker 4: honestly picked up on that, you know, at rewatching it
- 24:53Speaker 4: this time. The thing that I was really struck by
- 24:57Speaker 4: was the way in which, you know, when he talks
- 24:59Speaker 4: about the idea of the imperial technology and just kind
- 25:02Speaker 4: of being overloaded with thing after thing after thing, you know, uh,
- 25:09Speaker 4: and and how this you know, keeps people from being
- 25:11Speaker 4: able to really recognize what's happening. I find that really
- 25:15Speaker 4: fascinating because, you know, it is an incredibly because the
- 25:24Speaker 4: conversation is not long, but it's an incredibly astute discussion
- 25:32Speaker 4: of where we are in society, right and and and
- 25:37Speaker 4: the ways in which, uh, you know, even our own
- 25:40Speaker 4: politics can create this difficulty for people to follow. Basically,
- 25:49Speaker 4: we are entertaining ourselves to death, you know, by being
- 25:54Speaker 4: lulled to sleep with with technology. Uh and and that's
- 25:58Speaker 4: the interesting thing that I kind of find about this discussion,
- 26:04Speaker 4: and so and I like that because it again it's
- 26:09Speaker 4: it's just subtle enough. And it's also I think fits
- 26:14Speaker 4: so well in line with just the way in which
- 26:16Speaker 4: George kind of created Star Wars, which is not to
- 26:21Speaker 4: be so tied into just one time frame, but to
- 26:26Speaker 4: feel very applicable that, you know, when you could watch
- 26:30Speaker 4: the show in thirty years and have a completely different
- 26:33Speaker 4: perspective as to what this characters talking up about, but
- 26:37Speaker 4: at the same time still feel like he's talking to you,
- 26:40Speaker 4: which I really appreciate about the writing here.
- 26:44Speaker 3: I think it's very I think you're you're spot on.
- 26:47Speaker 3: They're obviously making a comment about how, you know, our
- 26:50Speaker 3: obsession with technological convenience keeps us slaves to those that
- 26:55Speaker 3: wish to control us. Absolutely, that is an eternal, universal theme,
- 27:01Speaker 3: just like the themes that mister Lucas put in there,
- 27:05Speaker 3: and it's the right note to hit. I would love
- 27:09Speaker 3: to have had a moment, and this is not I'm
- 27:12Speaker 3: not knocking the episode, but I would have also loved
- 27:17Speaker 3: a character to counterpoint him strongly saying well, it's because
- 27:24Speaker 3: life got convenient that we were able to distract ourselves
- 27:27Speaker 3: with conveniences people missed out on previous terrible instances regimes, kings, dictatorships,
- 27:38Speaker 3: one of the forms of government, or because the struggle
- 27:42Speaker 3: to survive was so pronounced that they didn't have time
- 27:47Speaker 3: to consider swapping out the rule because they were scrabbling.
- 27:52Speaker 3: And so I think that becomes an even that becomes
- 27:56Speaker 3: an equally interesting thread for them to have pursued to
- 27:58Speaker 3: have a character A. Yes, that's that's contributing to it now.
- 28:04Speaker 3: But no matter the time period that Palpatine takes over,
- 28:09Speaker 3: there's gonna be something that's going to keep the majority
- 28:13Speaker 3: of the population distracted from what's going on, because they're
- 28:16Speaker 3: all going to have to say. I can't exactly what
- 28:19Speaker 3: Luke says. He's working hard on the farm. He's out
- 28:23Speaker 3: in the middle of nowhere. He only has his aunt
- 28:25Speaker 3: and uncle with him. His friends treat him like an outcast.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Biggs just left and he's you know, and he's like,
- 28:31Speaker 3: you know, the empire so far away from here. You know,
- 28:35Speaker 3: what am I going to do about this? This is
- 28:37Speaker 3: I live here, this is what I do. It's that
- 28:40Speaker 3: Luke's caught in the same trap without that same sort
- 28:44Speaker 3: of underpinning of living in Coruscant or something like that.
- 28:47Speaker 4: It is, so what you're saying is I can't walk.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Out because you love Palpatine too much.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Baby, too much baby anyway.
- 29:01Speaker 5: Yeah, God, restant, No, I do think you're you're you're
- 29:07Speaker 5: writing at and and uh, the other part of the episode,
- 29:11Speaker 5: which which stands out to me because we don't spend
- 29:13Speaker 5: a time with time with luth In here, but the
- 29:15Speaker 5: conversation that we end up having with him.
- 29:19Speaker 4: About the way in which they have reached the point
- 29:28Speaker 4: where big risks have to be taken and and and
- 29:33Speaker 4: in fact you know that they're they're these risks that
- 29:37Speaker 4: could put all that they've been working for so far
- 29:41Speaker 4: in jeopardy. But but they're getting to that tipping point
- 29:44Speaker 4: where where it's like we do this now or maybe
- 29:48Speaker 4: nothing ever happens. And and so I wanted to ask
- 29:54Speaker 4: you about that because I just found that to be
- 29:57Speaker 4: another place where the episode, uh, it just feels like
- 30:02Speaker 4: we're ratcheting up the tension so that as the payoff
- 30:08Speaker 4: comes in the next episode, it's like we truly understand
- 30:12Speaker 4: just everything's at stake and how everything is just on
- 30:15Speaker 4: that knife's edge, you know, and if we stray, just
- 30:20Speaker 4: as Glady Real would say in The Lord of Rings,
- 30:22Speaker 4: you know, if you stray just a little bit, we're
- 30:24Speaker 4: done for. And so what did you think about that? No?
- 30:31Speaker 3: I I think that it does a brilliant job of
- 30:35Speaker 3: setting the stakes. Why do I care so much about
- 30:38Speaker 3: this heist? Why is this not just another thing? And
- 30:41Speaker 3: it's because if this thing doesn't happen, everything, like you said,
- 30:47Speaker 3: everything's writing on it.
- 30:49Speaker 1: It has to happen.
- 30:50Speaker 3: If it doesn't happen, everything is lost outside of even
- 30:55Speaker 3: just and Or's life. And it's like that immediately communicates
- 30:59Speaker 3: to the audience how important this is. And why even
- 31:03Speaker 3: if I have any sort of you know, quibbles with
- 31:08Speaker 3: the show here or there, it's at least given me
- 31:12Speaker 3: that nice, big shiny object to look at it and say, yeah,
- 31:15Speaker 3: but I want to find out how this turns out,
- 31:19Speaker 3: because I've been told in other shows at other times
- 31:23Speaker 3: this has to happen. Everything's going to fall apart. And
- 31:25Speaker 3: then it falls apart, and that they pulled the rug
- 31:27Speaker 3: pull are they serious it would fall apart? If it's
- 31:32Speaker 3: like Luke at the beginning of Return of the Jedi.
- 31:36Speaker 3: When you first encounter him, he's in shadow, he's dressed
- 31:39Speaker 3: in black, and the first movie does is what Vader does,
- 31:41Speaker 3: which is choke people and people because we've seen Return
- 31:45Speaker 3: of the Jedi so many times, we forget that that's
- 31:48Speaker 3: a conscious decision to come in and have you reminded
- 31:51Speaker 3: very quickly, Luke can still go to the dark side. Yeah,
- 31:54Speaker 3: this is not a done deal. He's not necessarily the hero.
- 31:59Speaker 3: And I think that is in that same sort of
- 32:01Speaker 3: vein of oh, I got to at least know how
- 32:05Speaker 3: this pans out well.
- 32:07Speaker 4: And and I like that you said that too, because
- 32:10Speaker 4: you know, one of the interesting parts about this this episode,
- 32:13Speaker 4: uh is that you know and Or uh gets kind
- 32:17Speaker 4: of found out by you know, Skin uh pushing him
- 32:22Speaker 4: to give him the reason why he's actually there.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Uh.
- 32:25Speaker 4: And you know, we find out the reason that he's there,
- 32:28Speaker 4: which we all know, which is for the money that
- 32:32Speaker 4: you know, for him, this rebellion is not a rebellion.
- 32:36Speaker 4: It's just trying to find a way to get out
- 32:39Speaker 4: and get away to uh, you know, to be able
- 32:42Speaker 4: to save you know, his his adopted mother, you know,
- 32:49Speaker 4: and his own skin. And so I what what's what's
- 32:54Speaker 4: great here. You know too, is is that when you
- 32:58Speaker 4: think about in real one where he talks about you know,
- 33:01Speaker 4: I've been in this fight since I was six years old.
- 33:03Speaker 4: This fight for him has just taken on so many
- 33:06Speaker 4: different iterations.
- 33:11Speaker 1: You know.
- 33:12Speaker 4: You get him being the kid on on what's the
- 33:18Speaker 4: name of his planet, You get to him being a
- 33:22Speaker 4: kid on the planet of Canari right where where uh
- 33:26Speaker 4: the the Republic is responsible for some sort of mining
- 33:32Speaker 4: guild coming in and basically strip unting his planet, killing
- 33:35Speaker 4: his parents and leaving an orphan with his sister, and
- 33:38Speaker 4: then having them get separated, and then just to slowly
- 33:42Speaker 4: watch him go from being a guy like in some
- 33:46Speaker 4: ways like this is the more gritty version of what
- 33:48Speaker 4: happens to Han Solo, right, you know, from going from
- 33:51Speaker 4: being a guy who's only out for himself to being
- 33:55Speaker 4: the guy who's in this for some thing much bigger.
- 34:01Speaker 4: And I find that to be incredibly fascinating to take
- 34:05Speaker 4: that more gritty approach than to following his story. And
- 34:09Speaker 4: it's one of the things I just kind of really
- 34:11Speaker 4: love about the series and the show, and it's one
- 34:14Speaker 4: of the reasons that I think, you know, even though
- 34:16Speaker 4: this episode is the middle of a trilogy of episodes.
- 34:21Speaker 4: It's like it sets up everything so well for just
- 34:26Speaker 4: the character stuff, so that you know, when you get
- 34:29Speaker 4: to the next one, we can do all the action
- 34:32Speaker 4: and then also have the suspense of like this has
- 34:35Speaker 4: to pay off or we're really in trouble.
- 34:37Speaker 3: So, I mean, given all of that on the star
- 34:40Speaker 3: rating scale, do you give this a five twelve?
- 34:44Speaker 1: No?
- 34:44Speaker 4: I mean this this episode, as much as I do
- 34:47Speaker 4: enjoy it, you know, I think this is the type.
- 34:51Speaker 4: This is the episode and the season where it's probably
- 34:56Speaker 4: three point seven five corsant puffs out of five because
- 35:02Speaker 4: there's a lot that I really like here, but the
- 35:06Speaker 4: serial storyline does kind of just break up. I think
- 35:10Speaker 4: what for me, The rest of the flow of the
- 35:12Speaker 4: episode was fantastic. It's like if I had excised him
- 35:16Speaker 4: in some ways, I'd feel great. You know, I almost
- 35:20Speaker 4: feel like he's the character here. You know, we didn't
- 35:23Speaker 4: even talk about you know, de dra and her storyline,
- 35:26Speaker 4: which but again, you cut him out, like you could
- 35:29Speaker 4: have not had him in this episode at all, or
- 35:32Speaker 4: even maybe the next episode, it seems like, and then
- 35:35Speaker 4: not revisited his story until possibly the next trilogy of episodes,
- 35:41Speaker 4: and I would.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Have been just fine with that until they get back
- 35:45Speaker 1: to fair Yeah.
- 35:46Speaker 4: Something like that.
- 35:47Speaker 1: You know, I don't know. Listen.
- 35:50Speaker 3: And the thing is, I feel bad for the actor
- 35:52Speaker 3: playing it. No, he's he does a find job what
- 35:54Speaker 3: he's being tasked to do. I agree, there's a aramy
- 36:00Speaker 3: that wants to give this a three, but I wind
- 36:02Speaker 3: up giving it like a three five.
- 36:05Speaker 4: Cause wow, we're not even that far off the.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Performance by the actor who plays But it's all strictly
- 36:12Speaker 3: the actor who plays scheme so good and he is phenomenal,
- 36:17Speaker 3: and so this entire entire episode gets elevated strictly because
- 36:23Speaker 3: of him. Overall, it's a three with him. I'm giving
- 36:28Speaker 3: it some extra love because I enjoyed his performance so
- 36:33Speaker 3: damn much, especially how effortlessly he inhabits somebody who's a
- 36:40Speaker 3: cynic but not ragey. Right, he doesn't have a chip
- 36:49Speaker 3: on his shoulder about it. He's he's this this very cool,
- 36:54Speaker 3: pragmatic type of rebellious where it's like, you know, I've
- 36:58Speaker 3: lost everything, anyway, screw it, I might as well try
- 37:01Speaker 3: to take some some of these a holes out with me, yeah,
- 37:04Speaker 3: and make an impact. And adding in that he's a
- 37:07Speaker 3: war veteran basically you know, like that that's some great,
- 37:12Speaker 3: great acting going on there and an interesting character.
- 37:14Speaker 4: Well, and I want to touch on that too real
- 37:17Speaker 4: quick is because what you just said about him and
- 37:21Speaker 4: his acting, like that's I think the thing that's really
- 37:24Speaker 4: fascinating about this show is that even even the character
- 37:27Speaker 4: we don't like, like, all the performances in this show
- 37:31Speaker 4: so far are just top notch, right, None of it
- 37:35Speaker 4: is necessarily the actor's fault. I feel like for not
- 37:38Speaker 4: pulling off the storyline, you know, any any fault there,
- 37:42Speaker 4: I kind of lay it like, you know, I feel
- 37:45Speaker 4: like Gilroy and his brother could have found a better
- 37:48Speaker 4: way to integrate that serial storyline. But it's like, yeah,
- 37:51Speaker 4: I mean the way he's playing it, he creates this
- 37:53Speaker 4: character this is just kind of somewhat creepy, somewhat just
- 37:58Speaker 4: like almost seemingly aloof and disturbed. And that is kind
- 38:04Speaker 4: of interesting because that's a that it's kind of a
- 38:06Speaker 4: fascinating thing to turn somebody into some sort of fanatic, right,
- 38:11Speaker 4: which is.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Kind of where we go with the character.
- 38:13Speaker 4: And so all of that is you're absolutely you know,
- 38:17Speaker 4: the guy playing scheme is just the tip of the
- 38:22Speaker 4: iceberg for this This episode of how well everybody is
- 38:27Speaker 4: doing performance wise, which is I think a real hallmark
- 38:31Speaker 4: of this show is that, man, it feels like just
- 38:34Speaker 4: everybody brings their a game the whole time, which is
- 38:38Speaker 4: which is wonderful because even in the episodes you don't love,
- 38:42Speaker 4: I find myself kind of engrossed just by the performances themselves.
- 38:47Speaker 3: I think a lot of it has to do with
- 38:49Speaker 3: Diego Luna. Yes, I agree, the producer he Yeah, it's
- 38:55Speaker 3: just like you and McGregor, Like, you can tell how
- 38:58Speaker 3: much love is being put into it. That this actor
- 39:00Speaker 3: is here and he's so there, that's he's involved at
- 39:05Speaker 3: a higher level. Yes, he needs to be there and
- 39:08Speaker 3: part of this, and he's injecting that passion he has
- 39:11Speaker 3: for it into it. Whatever problems I might have with
- 39:14Speaker 3: the Obi Wan show, I could tell that McGregor cared
- 39:18Speaker 3: deeply about telling this story the best way that he
- 39:21Speaker 3: possibly could.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Yeah, and he showed up and every moment I've ever seen. Yeah,
- 39:26Speaker 4: And which was really because you know, he's the focal.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Point of that.
- 39:31Speaker 4: But no, no, I agree. I think you're absolutely right.
- 39:34Speaker 4: In some ways, I think these shows are kind of
- 39:38Speaker 4: best win. The lead of the show is completely sold
- 39:42Speaker 4: out to the show. I actually think it's one of
- 39:45Speaker 4: the reasons why, even though season three of The Mandalorian
- 39:51Speaker 4: was not its best season, when you had Katie Sakoff
- 39:56Speaker 4: on the show and she had so much more lead
- 39:58Speaker 4: time in that season, it's great because she truly is
- 40:04Speaker 4: the same way. She very much cares about this character
- 40:07Speaker 4: and making sure that it's right and getting it right.
- 40:10Speaker 4: You know, tomorrow Morrison even book a boafit same way
- 40:13Speaker 4: he really cares, I think about getting it right. And
- 40:16Speaker 4: so you know, any other faults aren't on the main person.
- 40:21Speaker 3: And so yeah, I'm not going to hold him accountable
- 40:24Speaker 3: for that speeder chase. No, that's not on him.
- 40:28Speaker 4: That is definitely an editing problem.
- 40:31Speaker 3: On that we can agree. So where else can people
- 40:34Speaker 3: agree with you?
- 40:35Speaker 4: Well, they can find me out there that Matt Rushing
- 40:38Speaker 4: zero two all over social media. So if I'm on
- 40:42Speaker 4: that platform, search for that name, you'll find me. I
- 40:44Speaker 4: would love to talk to you. Of course, you'll find
- 40:47Speaker 4: me here on the network with the completed show called
- 40:49Speaker 4: outposts about every single chapter of the Harry Potter series.
- 40:52Speaker 4: You can find me over on the TFM network with
- 40:54Speaker 4: a bunch of shows. One is the six oh two Club.
- 40:58Speaker 4: That is a show where we talk about all of
- 41:00Speaker 4: the fandoms that we love, not just one. John's a
- 41:03Speaker 4: frequent guest over there. We have a great time, so
- 41:05Speaker 4: hope you'll check that out. And then I do a
- 41:07Speaker 4: lot of great Star Trek talk over there with Christopher Jones,
- 41:11Speaker 4: as we're doing a bunch of anniversary rewatches for things
- 41:13Speaker 4: like Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek Enterprise and Start Trek
- 41:16Speaker 4: Deep Phase nine, so make sure that you check those
- 41:18Speaker 4: out as well. But John, if people don't want to
- 41:21Speaker 4: catch up with you on social media because you're off
- 41:24Speaker 4: for lent, where would they find you?
- 41:27Speaker 1: You know what?
- 41:28Speaker 3: I'm going to try my best to stay in communication
- 41:31Speaker 3: with the world in some way over on my blog
- 41:33Speaker 3: Casseljunkie dot com. But typically you can find Castle Junkie
- 41:37Speaker 3: out there on your social network of choice, although there's
- 41:41Speaker 3: so many of them now that I don't belong everywhere. Yes, yes,
- 41:45Speaker 3: very few outlets anymore. But you can also find me
- 41:50Speaker 3: right here on the network, co hosting a show called
- 41:52Speaker 3: house Lights where we look at the work of film directors.
- 41:55Speaker 3: I know, groundbreaking movie podcast. What pardon me, we're blazing
- 42:00Speaker 3: trails over there, but it is a lot of fun.
- 42:03Speaker 3: I highly recommend you to Hey, hey, oh, don't even
- 42:08Speaker 3: get me started about the disappointment of discussing Blazing Saddles
- 42:11Speaker 3: with somebody that doesn't love that movie, because I just
- 42:13Speaker 3: don't get the world sometimes. But what I do get
- 42:16Speaker 3: is this, uh, this message on my Jeta communicator saying
- 42:19Speaker 3: it's time to head back to the temple. So Master Rushing,
- 42:23Speaker 3: I think it's time we close these negotiations John Negotiations
- 42:28Speaker 3: and Mark
- 42:28Speaker 2: Lars join the Revolution, join the Nerd Party.
