- 0:00So when you open your news app in the morning, or, you know,
- 0:04you turn on the television and the screen is just instantly
- 0:07filled with headlines. Oh yeah, constantly.
- 0:09Right. It's like a new war breaking out
- 0:10or a devastating earthquake or some crazy, shifting global
- 0:14alliances. Yeah, your heart rate naturally
- 0:17spikes. I mean, the human instinct is
- 0:19just blind. Pan sure you assume the worst.
- 0:21Yeah, you feel like the world is kind of spinning off its axis,
- 0:24But what if that chaos is actually an orchestrated decreed
- 0:29scripts leading to a promised birth?
- 0:31What if the intense shaking of the world is not proof that God
- 0:35has lost control, but you know the clearest evidence that he is
- 0:38firmly seated on his throne? Right.
- 0:40Welcome to Reformed thinking. Today we are opening up Matthew
- 0:44chapter 24. Yes, we're looking specifically
- 0:47at verses 3 through 8, just unpacking Christ's astonishing
- 0:52warnings about the end of the age.
- 0:53It's heavy stuff. It really is, and our goal is to
- 0:56cut through the modern anxiety, the sensationalism, and the
- 0:59false teachings that cloud this text and just get down to the
- 1:02bedrock truth of what Jesus actually said.
- 1:04Yeah, because we are dealing with a text that it demands
- 1:09absolute reverence. I mean, this is not a passage
- 1:12given to us for idle curiosity. It is not here.
- 1:16So we can drop speculative timelines or try to predict the
- 1:20Evening News, you know? Yeah, that's a huge trap.
- 1:22It is. This is Jesus Christ speaking
- 1:25with divine authority. He is actively preparing his
- 1:29people for the Crucible of deception and, well,
- 1:33geopolitical catastrophe. Wow, the stakes really couldn't
- 1:36be higher here. How you understand this text
- 1:39alters the way you process your daily life, how you view
- 1:42history, and how you face suffering.
- 1:45Yeah. So to get to the core of those
- 1:47warnings, we really have to start by setting the scene.
- 1:49Yes, absolutely. Before we even look at the
- 1:50specific predictions about Earth clips and wars, we need to
- 1:53understand the physical and, well, the redemptive historical
- 1:57setting where these words were spoken.
- 1:58Right, context is everything. Yeah, we can't just lift these
- 2:01verses out of thin air and apply them to the 21st century without
- 2:04seeing where Jesus was sitting. No, you can't.
- 2:06And what he had just done, you know, the setting itself carries
- 2:10massive theological weight. It really does.
- 2:13The setting is everything. Here it is, the final week of
- 2:16Christ's earthly ministry. Right.
- 2:18So we're talking roughly 8033. Yeah, around 8033.
- 2:22And Jesus and his inner circle of disciples of Peter, James,
- 2:27John and Andrew, they have just walked out of the city of
- 2:30Jerusalem. They cross the Kidron Valley and
- 2:32sit down on the Mount of Olives. And this is an elevated Ridge
- 2:36just east of Jerusalem. From this vantage point, you
- 2:39have a breathtaking panoramic view looking westward directly
- 2:44back at the Herodian Temple Mount.
- 2:45Man, imagine you were sitting there on that hillside.
- 2:48Yeah, you are a fisherman from Galilee, which is a rural area.
- 2:52Right, a country guy. Yeah, and you are looking across
- 2:54the valley at Herod's temple. It is.
- 2:57It's hard for modern minds to grasp the sheer scale of this
- 3:01structure. Oh, it's massive.
- 3:02It was an architectural marvel of the ancient world.
- 3:05I mean, the Jewish historian Josephus described it as looking
- 3:08like a snow capped mountain. Yeah, because of all the white
- 3:10marble. Right, all that white marble and
- 3:12the front was covered in massive plates of solid gold.
- 3:15Which is just wild to think about.
- 3:17Yeah, so when the sun rose over the Mount of Olives and hit that
- 3:22temple, it would literally blind you.
- 3:25Wow. And some of the foundation
- 3:27stones weighed hundreds of tons. To the Jewish mind, looking at
- 3:31that massive, brilliant structure, it seemed entirely
- 3:35indestructible. Completely permanent.
- 3:37Right. It was the center of their
- 3:38national identity. It was the physical
- 3:40representation of God's covenant with Israel.
- 3:43Yeah, it was the epicenter of their entire universe.
- 3:45I mean, everything revolved around the temple, right?
- 3:47But this private, quiet briefing on the Mount of Olives, it
- 3:51follows A devastating public confrontation.
- 3:53OK. And that confrontation is the
- 3:55catalyst for the entire discourse.
- 3:58If you look at the immediate context back in Matthew 23,
- 4:01Jesus is inside the temple precincts.
- 4:04Right before they leave. Yes, and he delivers his most
- 4:06blistering sermon. He pronounces 8 woes against the
- 4:09Scribes and Pharisees. Yeah, the heavy stuff.
- 4:12Very heavy. He calls them hypocrites, blind
- 4:14guides, a brood of Vipers. Just unloads on them.
- 4:17He does. He publicly exposes their false
- 4:20religion, and that sermon culminates in a chilling
- 4:25sentence of divine abandonment. Jesus looks to Jerusalem and
- 4:28says, see, your house is left to you desolate.
- 4:32Wow. I mean that word desolate must
- 4:34have landed like a physical blow to the stomach.
- 4:36Absolutely. And notice he does not say God's
- 4:39house, he says your house. Yeah, that is a brilliant
- 4:42observation. It is no longer the House of
- 4:44God. It has become a den of robbers,
- 4:46their house, Right. And then the very next verse,
- 4:50Matthew 24, verse one notes a profound well, a massive
- 4:54redemptive historical. Action.
- 4:56What does it say? It says Jesus left the temple
- 4:58and was going away. We are witnessing an Ichabod
- 5:01moment. Right, Ichabod, meaning the
- 5:03glory has departed. Yes, precisely.
- 5:06We see that exact imagery in the Old Testament, don't we?
- 5:08We do. Yeah.
- 5:10This perfectly mirrors the vision of the prophet Ezekiel
- 5:13back in chapters 10 and 11. OK, set that up for us.
- 5:16So in Ezekiel's day, right before the Babylonians destroyed
- 5:19the first temple, Ezekiel sees a vision of the Shekinah glory of
- 5:22the Lord. Yeah, the glory physically lifts
- 5:25off the mercy seat. It moves to the threshold of the
- 5:28temple, then goes out the Eastgate, and finally it departs
- 5:32to the mountain on the east side of the city.
- 5:34So the exact same path. Yes, it is a slow, reluctant,
- 5:38terrifying departure of God's presence because of the apostasy
- 5:42of the nation. That is heavy.
- 5:43And now, in 8033, Jesus, the Incarnate Son of God, the true
- 5:48glory of Israel, traces that exact same geographic path.
- 5:52He walks right out of the temple.
- 5:54He walks out, goes out the Eastgate, crosses the Kidron
- 5:58Valley, and sits on the mountain to the east.
- 6:01He is acting as the true prophet, declaring divine
- 6:04abandonment on a house corrupted by unbelief.
- 6:06And as they were walking away, before they sit down, the
- 6:10disciples point out the magnificent temple buildings to
- 6:13Jesus. Yeah, they do.
- 6:14You have to wonder what is going through their heads there.
- 6:16I mean, maybe they are trying to comfort themselves after hearing
- 6:19him say desolate. Probably.
- 6:21Maybe they are pointing at the massive stones implicitly
- 6:23saying, look at these rocks, Jesus.
- 6:25Surely this building isn't going anywhere.
- 6:27Right. Like, look how solid this is,
- 6:28yeah. But Jesus responds by just
- 6:31shattering that illusion. He says that not one stone will
- 6:34be left upon another. Everything will be thrown down
- 6:37total. Destruction.
- 6:38Yeah, which leads to the disciples coming to him
- 6:40privately on the mountain and asking a compound question.
- 6:45In verse three. They ask when will these things
- 6:48be and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of
- 6:50the age? Yeah, and that question reveals
- 6:54a massive misunderstanding on their.
- 6:56Part. How so?
- 6:57Well, you have to put yourself in their shoes.
- 6:58The disciples were steeped in Old Testament prophecy, right?
- 7:01Right. They were currently living under
- 7:03the oppressive, brutal boot of the Roman Empire.
- 7:06Yeah, they were an occupied nation.
- 7:08They were waiting for the Messiah to overthrow Rome, crush
- 7:11their enemies, and establish the earthly Davidic Kingdom right
- 7:14then and there. Immediate political victory.
- 7:17Yes. So in their minds, the
- 7:20destruction of the temple and the end of the world were
- 7:23concurrent events. Ah.
- 7:24I see. They were synonymous.
- 7:26If the temple falls, it must mean the immediate earthly
- 7:29establishment of the Kingdom. They had absolutely no concept
- 7:33of the Church age. Wow, thinking about this if you
- 7:37walked up to a modern American citizen today and told them that
- 7:40tomorrow morning the Capitol building, the White House, and
- 7:43the Supreme Court will all be simultaneously demolished to
- 7:47dust. Oh man.
- 7:49Right. The immediate reaction of that
- 7:50citizen is that the nation is over.
- 7:52Sure, the entire framework of security, law and identity is
- 7:57shattered. For the disciples, the temple
- 7:59was their capital, their White House and their Supreme Court
- 8:02all rolled into one sacred structure.
- 8:05Yeah, that is a perfect way to put it.
- 8:07The destruction of the temple meant the end of the age as they
- 8:09understood it. They did not grasp the gap
- 8:12between Christ's first advent as the suffering servant who dies
- 8:15for sins and his second advent as the conquering king who
- 8:18judges the nations. Were two different comings.
- 8:20Right, because the King had been rejected by his own people, the
- 8:24earthly manifestation of the Kingdom was postponed.
- 8:26Jesus is taking this moment to transition from the offer of the
- 8:30Kingdom to the prophetic revelation of the delay of the
- 8:33Kingdom and, well, the terrifying judgments that will
- 8:37precede its final arrival. So hearing that, a question
- 8:40naturally comes up. If the disciples are
- 8:42specifically asking about the destruction of the temple, why
- 8:46can't we read this whole passage as being fulfilled in 8070?
- 8:50That's a huge debate. Yeah, because history tells us
- 8:52that the Roman general Titus sacked Jerusalem, slaughtered
- 8:56the inhabitants and literally burned the Temple to the ground.
- 9:00He did. The gold melted into the cracks
- 9:03of the stones and the Roman soldiers pried every single
- 9:06stone apart to get the gold, fulfilling Christ's words.
- 9:09Literally, yes. So why not just say Jesus
- 9:11predicted a 1st century event? It happened and we can close the
- 9:15book on this prophecy. Well, that is a very common
- 9:17theological approach. It is often called preterism,
- 9:19right? And while it is true that the
- 9:21horrific events of 8070 serve as a local historical foreshadowing
- 9:26of Christ's warnings, you simply cannot contain the massive scope
- 9:30of Matthew 24 within the 1st century.
- 9:32It's just too big. Way too big.
- 9:34The cosmic scale of the global wars, the famines, and the
- 9:37unprecedented deception described later in this
- 9:40discourse catapults the timeline far into the eschatological
- 9:45future. Christ is outlining the period
- 9:47known in the Old Testament as Daniel's 70th week.
- 9:51The future Tribulation period. Yes, the prophet Jeremiah calls
- 9:55it the time of Jacob's trouble, right?
- 9:57It is a specific future period designed to pour out divine
- 10:01wrath upon a Christ rejecting world and to purge national
- 10:05Israel, bringing a remnant to national repentance.
- 10:08Wow. The disciples asked a compound
- 10:10question, and Jesus gives an answer that stretches from near
- 10:13judgment to future consummation. He's doing both.
- 10:16He uses the fall of Jerusalem as an earnest a pattern of greater
- 10:20eschatological realities. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 10:22Just as the local judgment fell in Jerusalem, a global judgement
- 10:25will fall on the earth. So as believers today, we are
- 10:28watching the geopolitical and spiritual stage being set for
- 10:31this era of tribulation. OK, so if the stage is being
- 10:35set, what is the first thing we should be looking out for?
- 10:37That's $1,000,000 question. Right, because the disciples
- 10:40just asked for signs at the end of the world.
- 10:42You would expect Jesus to point to the sky.
- 10:44You would expect him to talk about cosmic disturbances,
- 10:48massive invading armies, or natural disasters right out of
- 10:52the gate. Right, big cinematic stuff.
- 10:54Yeah, but he does not do that. Instead, he points to the
- 10:58pulpit. He does.
- 11:00The very first warning he gives is about spiritual deception.
- 11:03Yeah, and that is one of the most stunning details in the
- 11:05entire discourse. It really.
- 11:07Is Jesus says in verse 4, see that no one leads you astray.
- 11:12Wow. Before he mentions a single
- 11:14sword being drawn, before he mentions a single earthquake
- 11:17shaking the ground, he commands vigilance against false
- 11:20doctrine. That's so contrary to how we
- 11:23think. It is spiritual deception is the
- 11:26primary threat to the Church. Let's look closely at the
- 11:29language Jesus uses here. The specific Greek word used in
- 11:32verse 4 is plenisa, which comes from the root plenosh.
- 11:35Yes, and the word plenosh means to wander from Orthodox truth.
- 11:38It means to be severed from reality and LED into soul
- 11:41destroying error. What is fascinating about this
- 11:44word is that it is the exact root from which we derive our
- 11:48English word planet. Oh wow, I didn't know that.
- 11:51Yeah. Ancient astronomers looked at
- 11:53the night sky and saw the stars in fixed, predictable positions,
- 11:56right? But they noticed these other
- 11:58celestial bodies that seem to wander erratically across the
- 12:01heavens. They call them Wanderers or
- 12:04planets. That's amazing.
- 12:05To be deceived in the biblical sense is to become a spiritual
- 12:08wanderer, detached from the fixed orbit of God's Word.
- 12:12That is a terrifying image, being detached from the fixed
- 12:15orbit of truth, just floating out into the darkness.
- 12:18Yeah, and Jesus uses a grammatical structure here, a
- 12:22subjunctive mood with a negative particle, to issue an incredibly
- 12:25strong prohibition. Yes, he's drawing a hard line.
- 12:28He is putting up a massive warning sign.
- 12:30Satan's primary weapon in the end times is not physical
- 12:33violence. It is false teaching.
- 12:36This specific word, planish, is used extensively in the Book of
- 12:39Revelation to describe the work of the Antichrist and the false
- 12:42prophet who deceived the nation's.
- 12:44Yeah, because the enemy is a liar from the beginning, right?
- 12:48Verse 5 explains the exact method of this deception.
- 12:51For many will come in my name, saying I am the Christ, and they
- 12:54will lead many astray. Many, he says.
- 12:56Many. Those is the repetition of that
- 12:58word. Jesus is not warning about a
- 13:01tiny fringe cult meeting in a basement somewhere.
- 13:04No. He's warning about popular, well
- 13:07supported massive movements. And historical records show this
- 13:11happening very early on, right? Oh yeah, history records that
- 13:14prior to the Jewish revolts against Rome, numerous
- 13:18charlatans arose. Like who?
- 13:20A prime example is Simon Bar Khokba in AD 132.
- 13:24OK, he claimed to be the messianic deliverer.
- 13:27The people were desperate. They were crushed under Roman
- 13:29taxation and military rule. He just wanted out.
- 13:31They wanted a Savior who'd offer political liberation and earthly
- 13:35prosperity without the demand for repentance from sin.
- 13:39There it is. Bar Coca exploited that national
- 13:42anguish. He presented himself as a
- 13:44Messiah, he was endorsed by prominent religious leaders like
- 13:47Rabbi Akiva, and he led 10s of thousands of people to their
- 13:51absolute slaughter. The Romans crushed the rebellion
- 13:55and renamed Jerusalem following a false Christ brings total
- 13:59devastation, man. But this warning is not just
- 14:02locked in the first or second century.
- 14:04Not at all. We have counterfeit Christ's
- 14:06operating today acting as false messiahs for people who are
- 14:09desperate for comfort. The modern applications are
- 14:12piercing the text explicitly contrast the authentic Christ of
- 14:16Scripture with the multitude of Antichrist who will arise,
- 14:20right? Consider the prosperity gospel.
- 14:22Oh yeah, it offers a false Christ who promises health,
- 14:25wealth in your best life right right now.
- 14:28It promises earthly ease and financial breakthrough.
- 14:31This directly contradicts the true Christ of Matthew 24, who
- 14:35promises global tribulation, war, famine and persecution for
- 14:39his followers. It's the exact opposite message.
- 14:42It is how can you harmonize a message of guaranteed earthly
- 14:45luxury with a savior who says the world is going to fracture
- 14:48and you will be hated by all nations?
- 14:49You can't. You cannot.
- 14:51It is a completely different religion posing as Christianity.
- 14:54Yeah. Yeah, then you have liberal
- 14:56theology. OK, let's talk about that.
- 14:57This offers a stripped down Christ, a sanitized, therapeutic
- 15:01Jesus who is void of divine authority, omniscience, and
- 15:05eschatological wrath. Just a nice guy.
- 15:08Right. It treats Jesus as just a good
- 15:10moral teacher who is a product of his time, someone who is
- 15:13perhaps mistaken about the end of the world.
- 15:16That false Christ cannot save you from the coming judgement.
- 15:19And thirdly, we see the danger of mysticism and charismatic
- 15:23excesses. How does mysticism act as a
- 15:25counterfeit Christ? Well, mysticism trains people to
- 15:28rely on subjective emotional experiences and to listen for
- 15:32new inner voices beyond the closed Canon of scripture.
- 15:35Just trusting their feelings, yeah.
- 15:37The biblical worldview affirms that the Apostolic era of signed
- 15:40gifts has ceased. We have the complete sufficient
- 15:43Word of God. We look for no new revelations.
- 15:47To constantly seek extra biblical signs, wonders, and
- 15:49private words from God is to expose yourself to the very
- 15:53wandering the planah that Christ strictly forbids.
- 15:56That is so dangerous. Our sole authority is the
- 15:59written word delivered once for all to the Saints.
- 16:02When you unmore yourself from the objective truth of
- 16:05Scripture, you will fall for the subjective lies of a false
- 16:09Christ. Thinking through all of this, a
- 16:11very practical question comes to mind.
- 16:14Sure, it seems counterintuitive at first glance.
- 16:16OK, when society is collapsing around you, when the
- 16:19geopolitical tectonic plates are shifting and wars are breaking
- 16:22out, why is doctrinal precision more urgent than gathering
- 16:27physical survival gear? It's a great question.
- 16:29Why does Jesus prioritize theology over physical safety?
- 16:33That goes right to the core of the biblical worldview.
- 16:36Physical suffering, famine, and even death can only destroy the
- 16:39body, right? But spiritual misinterpretation
- 16:42following a false Christ destroys the soul eternally.
- 16:47If you face the collapse of society with the true Christ,
- 16:50you're eternally secure. You are hidden in the cleft of
- 16:53the rock. You might starve.
- 16:55You might be martyred, but your soul is safe.
- 16:57That's a hard truth, but it's true.
- 17:00But if you survive a global catastrophe physically, yet you
- 17:04are trusting in a counterfeit Savior, you remain under the
- 17:07eternal wrath of God. Oh man, the soul's eternal state
- 17:11is infinitely more critical than the body's temporary survival.
- 17:15Jesus is placing a guardrail of truth around his disciples souls
- 17:20because deception is the deadliest threat they will face.
- 17:23Spiritual deception is a worse fate than physical suffering.
- 17:27It severs the soul from the only source of life.
- 17:29Yeah. So once Christ has secured their
- 17:31minds against internal theological deception, he shifts
- 17:34his focus, right. He moves to the external
- 17:37physical threats that will shake the globe.
- 17:39He addresses the very things that cause us to panic today.
- 17:42Having warns him about false teachers, Jesus now outlines the
- 17:46geopolitical reality of the age. Verse 6 says and you'll hear of
- 17:49wars and rumors of wars expands the scope of verse 7 for nation
- 17:54will rise against nation and Kingdom against Kingdom.
- 17:57And when you look at modern data, it paints a very sobering
- 18:00picture. It really does.
- 18:01We often hear the secular progressive dream that humanity
- 18:05is evolving. Yeah, that we're getting better.
- 18:07The narrative is that through political unity, better
- 18:11education and scientific advancement, we are moving
- 18:13toward a peaceful utopia. We are supposedly outgrowing
- 18:17war. That's what they say.
- 18:18But the data from the UPS Allah Conflict Data Program reveals
- 18:21that the year 2023 saw 59 state based armed conflicts.
- 18:27Wow. That is the highest number
- 18:28recorded globally since 1946 / 238,000 global deaths resulted
- 18:35from armed conflict in that single year alone.
- 18:38Those statistics completely shatter the evolutionary
- 18:40optimism of secular philosophy. Yeah, it's not holding up.
- 18:43The world is not getting better. It is not progressing beyond
- 18:46warfare. The frequency of conflicts
- 18:49highlights the total depravity of man and the exactitude of the
- 18:52Savior's prophetic vision. He called it.
- 18:54He did. We are looking at a world that
- 18:56is fracturing, just as He said it would.
- 18:59Human hearts are wicked, and without the restraining grace of
- 19:01God, they plunge into violence. And what is the natural human
- 19:04reaction to that fracturing? When we see the death tolls
- 19:07rising and the borders collapsing, our reaction is
- 19:09terror. Yet Jesus issues a stunning
- 19:13command in verse 6. He looks at this future
- 19:15bloodbath and says, See that you are not alarmed.
- 19:18Yeah, the Greek word translated as alarmed is throwest.
- 19:22Throwest. Yes, this is an exceedingly rare
- 19:25word. It is used only three times in
- 19:27the entire New Testament. When you look at extra biblical
- 19:31Greco Roman literature, you find this word used in military
- 19:35contexts. OK, give us a picture of that.
- 19:37It describes soldiers who are standing in the battle line,
- 19:39perhaps in the Macedonian phalanx formation.
- 19:42Right? The enemy is charging at them,
- 19:44and suddenly they are so paralyzed by terror that they
- 19:47lose their minds, break ranks, drop their weapons and flee in
- 19:51irrational panic. Wow, so Jesus is looking at a
- 19:55future filled with global slaughter, starvation and
- 19:57tectonic collapse and he uses a military term to command his
- 20:02people. He is effectively saying do not
- 20:04lose your minds, do not break ranks, stand firm.
- 20:07But how can a person possibly stay calm during global
- 20:10slaughter? Right.
- 20:10How do you actually do that? How do you prevent that panic
- 20:14when the world is literally shaking beneath your feet?
- 20:17Jesus does not just give a bear command.
- 20:19He provides the theological anchor that makes obedience
- 20:22possible. What's the anchor?
- 20:24He says, see that you are not alarmed, for this must take
- 20:27place in Greek. The phrase for this must take
- 20:31place revolves around the word day.
- 20:33The word day carries massive theological weight.
- 20:35It does. The impersonal verb day
- 20:38indicates absolute divine necessity.
- 20:41It is the strongest word in the Greek language for divine
- 20:43determinism. It speaks of the immutable
- 20:46decree of God. Meaning God has decided it, yes.
- 20:49The wars, the famines, the earthquakes, they do not thwart
- 20:52God's plan, they fulfill it. Wow.
- 20:54Theologians often connect this directly to the Westminster
- 20:57Confession of Faith, Chapter 3, which states God from all
- 21:00eternity did by the most wise and holy counsel of his own
- 21:03will, freely and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass.
- 21:07So the chaos is the decreed script of the Almighty.
- 21:10Yes, that brings us to a crucial theological clarification.
- 21:13This is the pushback that immediately comes to mind for
- 21:15anyone listening to this. Oh, I'm sure.
- 21:17If God decrees the wars, the famines, and the deception, does
- 21:21that make him the author of sin right?
- 21:23How do we hold human guilt and God's sovereign decree at the
- 21:27same time? If God ordained A dictator to go
- 21:30to war, how can that violent ruler be held responsible for
- 21:35the bloodshed? That is the essential question
- 21:37when discussing God's absolute sovereignty.
- 21:40God's decree does not make Him the author of sin, nor does it
- 21:44remove human responsibility. OK, unpack that.
- 21:47We have to understand the biblical distinction between
- 21:49primary and secondary causes. Primary and secondary.
- 21:53Yes, God is the primary cause of all things governing the
- 21:56universe according to His perfect plan, right?
- 21:58But He works through secondary causes.
- 22:01The choices and actions of humans, wicked rulers, violent
- 22:05men, and false teachers act according to their own sinful
- 22:08desires. Who want to do it?
- 22:09They do. They are fully guilty for their
- 22:11actions because they choose them willingly.
- 22:13We see this clearly with Joseph and his brothers in the book of
- 22:16Genesis. Well, perfect example.
- 22:18His brothers throw him in a pit out of jealousy.
- 22:20They want him dead. They act out of pure malice.
- 22:23Yes, very wicked. Yet years later, Joseph looks at
- 22:27them and says, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for
- 22:30good to bring it about, that many people should be kept
- 22:33alive. Yes, the violent dictator goes
- 22:35to war because he wants to go to war.
- 22:38He is driven by his own greed, his pride, and his lust for
- 22:42power. He is entirely culpable.
- 22:44No one is forcing him. Exactly.
- 22:46Yet God sovereignly governs those wicked actions, channeling
- 22:50them to accomplish His holy and wise purposes.
- 22:54There is an asymmetrical relationship between God and
- 22:57evil. He does not create evil, He does
- 22:59not force men to sin, nor does He approve of sin, but He
- 23:02permits it and overrules it for His ultimate.
- 23:05Glory. So it's not fatalism.
- 23:07Not at all. Fatalism says blind chance rules
- 23:09the universe, so nothing matters and you should just give up.
- 23:12The biblical worldview says a perfectly holy, infinitely wise
- 23:15Father rules the universe, so everything has meaning.
- 23:18That's a. Huge difference.
- 23:20This doctrine of absolute sovereignty is medicine for
- 23:23trembling Saints. The hand that was sovereign over
- 23:26the horrific injustice of the Cross is sovereign over the
- 23:29convulsions of the age. The panic of man is cured by
- 23:32trusting the sovereignty of God. If you believe God is caught off
- 23:36guard by the news, you will panic.
- 23:38You have to. Right, but if you believe he
- 23:41decreed it, you can stand firm in the ranks.
- 23:44This shifts our understanding of the physical chaos.
- 23:47It is not a random series of tragic accidents.
- 23:50The wars and earthquakes are not just the universe falling apart
- 23:53the seams. Jesus places all these terrors
- 23:56under one specific, purposeful category.
- 23:59In verse 8, Jesus provides the theological lens through which
- 24:03we must view all the preceding terrors.
- 24:05What she say, He says. All these are but the beginning
- 24:07of the birth pains. Birth pains and the Greek
- 24:09phrases are condition. The word udin refers exclusively
- 24:13to the inescapable, excruciating contractions of a woman in
- 24:17labor. And commentaries point out that
- 24:19this is not a new metaphor Jesus just invented on the spot to
- 24:21sound poetic. No, not at all.
- 24:23He is drawing from established Old Testament prophetic
- 24:26vocabulary. If you look at the Septuagint,
- 24:29the Greek translation of the Old Testament, you see this exact
- 24:31term used to describe the unavoidable terror of the day of
- 24:35the Lord. OK, give us an example.
- 24:37For example, Isaiah 13.8 prophesized the judgment of
- 24:40Babylon saying pangs and agony will seize them.
- 24:44They will be in anguish like a woman in labor.
- 24:47Wow. You see identical imagery in
- 24:49Jeremiah 4.31 and Micah 4.9. It is the language of divine
- 24:54judgement falling upon the wicked.
- 24:56But there is a very specific reason Jesus uses the metaphor
- 24:59of birth pains rather than just describing the pain of a fatal
- 25:02disease or a mortal wound. Right?
- 25:04Birth pains have two main characteristics.
- 25:06First, they increase in frequency and intensity.
- 25:09Definitely do. Once labor starts, it does not
- 25:11stop. The contractions get closer
- 25:13together and they get much more painful. 2nd, and most vitally,
- 25:17they are teleological. Yes, teleological meaning.
- 25:21They have a defined goal, right? They have a purpose.
- 25:24The agony of the world does not lead to death, it leads to
- 25:26birth. That changes everything.
- 25:28It does. The groaning of creation is
- 25:31moving toward a glorious climax, the birth of the physical,
- 25:36earthly millennial Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
- 25:39The present age is not evolving into a utopia by human effort.
- 25:44Politics will not save us, but neither is history a meaningless
- 25:47cycle of violence. OK, the contractions are
- 25:50agonizing. They're deadly.
- 25:52But they are producing the new era under the Messiah.
- 25:55Imagine you wake up in the middle of the night with severe
- 25:57blinding abdominal pain. Oh, terrifying.
- 26:00You do not know the cause. Your mind immediately assumes
- 26:03the worst A ruptured appendix? A deadly disease?
- 26:07Internal bleeding. Right.
- 26:08You think you're dying? Yeah, it brings total despair
- 26:10because the pain seems meaningless and fatal.
- 26:13You feel like you are dying. But if you know you are 9 months
- 26:16pregnant and you feel that exact same severe pain, your reaction
- 26:19is totally different. Totally different.
- 26:21It hurts just as much. The physical agony is identical,
- 26:23but your mind does not assume death.
- 26:25You know that pain is productive.
- 26:27You know it produces life. The pain is deeply purposeful,
- 26:30it has an end date, and it results in joy.
- 26:33How does this shift your perspective on the Daily News?
- 26:36It has to shift it entirely. When you see a massive
- 26:39earthquake on the news, or you read about a new geopolitical
- 26:42conflict, you shouldn't view it as a random, meaningless tragedy
- 26:47that signals the end of everything.
- 26:49You should view it as a contraction.
- 26:51It shifts your perspective from despair to expectant endurance.
- 26:55Expectant Endurance. I like that the biblical text
- 26:59rejects both despair and triumphalism.
- 27:02Oh, so it rejects despair because the pains are
- 27:04purposeful. Under God's plan, He is
- 27:06orchestrating history. It rejects human triumphalism
- 27:10because the Kingdom does not arrive through the steady
- 27:13improvement of the world by politicians, social programs or
- 27:17technological advancement. We can't build it ourselves.
- 27:20No, it arrives through the sovereign judgement of God and
- 27:22the physical return of the King. We have to talk about the
- 27:25identity of that king. Yes, the only reason we can
- 27:27trust the diagnosis of the birth pains, the only reason we can
- 27:30find any comfort in this global chaos is because of the identity
- 27:34of the physician giving the diagnosis.
- 27:37The entire weight of this passage rests on the person and
- 27:40work of Jesus Christ. He's not merely acting as a
- 27:44passive prognosticator who made a few lucky guesses about the
- 27:47Roman Empire. Some people try to say that.
- 27:50They do. Liberal theology tries to argue
- 27:52that Jesus was just an apocalyptic Jewish preacher who
- 27:55is limited in knowledge, someone who thought the world would end
- 27:58in his lifetime and was wrong. That's just wild.
- 28:02The biblical text completely rejects that blasphemy.
- 28:06Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity.
- 28:08He knows the end from the beginning.
- 28:10And his physical posture on the Mount of Olives is highly
- 28:13significant in proving his identity.
- 28:15It is a massive Christological detail.
- 28:17Tell us about that. He is sitting on the Mount of
- 28:19Olives looking at Jerusalem, answering questions about the
- 28:22end of the Age and his glorious return.
- 28:24OK, this directly anticipates the prophecy of Zechariah 14.4.
- 28:28Zechariah, 14. Yes, Zechariah prophecies that
- 28:32when the Lord returns to fight against the nations and
- 28:34establish His Kingdom on earth, His feet shall stand on that day
- 28:38on the Mount of Olives. Wow, the exact same mountain.
- 28:41Jesus is deliberately positioning himself as the
- 28:44fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.
- 28:47He is the sovereign Lord of history.
- 28:49When you cross reference this text, you see a Direct Line
- 28:53between the events outlined in Matthew 24 and the Book of
- 28:56Revelation, specifically the seal Judgments of Revelation
- 28:59chapter 6. The sequence is an exact match.
- 29:03Really. Jesus outlines a sequence on the
- 29:05Mount of Olives, and decades later he reveals that same
- 29:09sequence being executed from heaven to the Apostle John.
- 29:13OK, walk us through the match. Well, the false Christ Jesus
- 29:16warns about in Matthew 24 parallel the rider on the White
- 29:19Horse of deception in the first seal.
- 29:21OK, wow, the wars and rumors of wars parallel the red horse of
- 29:24war in the second seal. Taking peace from the earth,
- 29:27right? The famines parallel the Black
- 29:29Horse in the third seal. The earthquakes and pestilence
- 29:32parallel the pale horse of death in the fourth seal.
- 29:34That is just incredible. And who is the 1 opening those
- 29:37seals in Revelation? Who is holding the scroll?
- 29:39It is the Lamb who is slain. It is Jesus Christ himself.
- 29:42He is not a helpless victim watching history unfold.
- 29:46He is the executor of the Father's wrath.
- 29:48He's driving. It He is the one actively
- 29:50breaking the seals and unleashing these judgements upon
- 29:53rebellious Earth, He is the one directing the birth paints.
- 29:57That is a terrifying reality for the unbeliever.
- 30:00It should be. The Jesus of the Bible is the
- 30:02one orchestrating the seal. Someone pouring out the wrath?
- 30:05Yes. How does that relate to his role
- 30:07as priest? How does the cross fit into this
- 30:10picture of impending global judgement?
- 30:13That is where the Gospel shines brightest in this passage.
- 30:15I love that. The one who sits on the mound
- 30:18predicting the violent upheaval of the world is mere days away
- 30:21from going to the cross. Days away.
- 30:24He is about to bear the full, unmitigated wrath of God for the
- 30:28sins of His people. The physical temple He just left
- 30:31will be destroyed, but Christ is offering the once for all
- 30:34sacrifice to which that entire temple system pointed.
- 30:38His body will be given. His blood will be poured out to
- 30:41secure redemption. He absorbs the wrath for his
- 30:43people so they don't have to face it.
- 30:45Yes, Therefore, believers do not face the terrors of history as
- 30:50condemned rebels. We face them as redeemed
- 30:53servants. That is such a comfort.
- 30:56Wars, natural disasters, and intense persecutions may afflict
- 31:00us, but they are not the punitive wrath of God upon us.
- 31:04None of these things can separate us from the love of God
- 31:06in Christ. Amen.
- 31:08Believers are hidden in the Rock.
- 31:10The birth pains of history cannot undo the finished
- 31:13atonement. No, they can't.
- 31:15Jesus is the true prophet diagnosing the sickness of the
- 31:18world, the true priest securing his flock through his blood, and
- 31:22the true King whose return is the focal point of all
- 31:26redemptive history. Bringing this all together, we
- 31:28have covered a massive amount of theological ground today.
- 31:31We really have. We've gone from the destruction
- 31:33of Herod's temple to the global deceptions of the Antichrist,
- 31:36from the military command against panic to the comforting
- 31:39sovereignty of God over all evil.
- 31:42The believers posture must be one of sober discernment,
- 31:45doctrinal precision, and absolute calm.
- 31:47We must recognize that panic is a form of practical atheism.
- 31:50Practical atheism. It treats events as though God
- 31:53has abandoned his throne. Right?
- 31:55The application for the Church is piercing.
- 31:58We must reject the foolish optimism that the world is just
- 32:02going to get better and better through human effort.
- 32:04Yes, we must vehemently oppose the false teachers who promise
- 32:09ease and wealth when Christ promises tribulation and
- 32:12endurance. And there are two specific
- 32:14extremes that often trap Christians when studying
- 32:17prophecy that we need to guard against.
- 32:19Yeah, the first extreme is the obsession with date setting and
- 32:22sensationalism. We see that all the time.
- 32:23Constantly right? Jesus explicitly says the end is
- 32:27not. Yet some believers dishonor
- 32:29prophecy by pretending to know what Christ has not revealed.
- 32:33They turn every earthquake into a mathematical calculation and
- 32:36every political election into a countdown.
- 32:38It's exhausting. It produces excitement for a
- 32:40short season, but leaves deep disillusionment in its wake.
- 32:44It treats prophecy like a puzzle to be solved rather than a truth
- 32:48to be obeyed. And what is the other extreme on
- 32:51the opposite end of the spectrum?
- 32:52The other extreme is the apathy of worldly optimism.
- 32:55This is the assumption that tomorrow will be just like
- 32:58today, ignoring the prophetic warnings entirely, It is a
- 33:01retreat into comfort. It is living as if this world is
- 33:05our permanent home. So what is the middle ground?
- 33:08How do we live in light of these terrifying but purposeful
- 33:12warnings? The call is for ordinary
- 33:14faithfulness. Just ordinary faithfulness.
- 33:16Yes, prophecy should make us holy, hopeful, and evangelistic.
- 33:21The existence of calamity does not cancel the Great Commission.
- 33:24Until you return to the Church, must preach the gospel, prize
- 33:27the Lord's Day, attend to the preached Word, engage in prayer,
- 33:31and suffer faithfully. We do the ordinary things with
- 33:34an eschatological urgency. I'd love that.
- 33:36We live every day knowing the King is at the door.
- 33:39You live in a world that is convulsing.
- 33:41You see the geopolitical tectonic plates shifting.
- 33:44The safest place in a collapsing world is not an underground
- 33:47bunker. No, it's not.
- 33:48It is not a diversified financial portfolio.
- 33:51The safest place is beneath the calm, commanding voice of the
- 33:54Lord Jesus Christ, holding fast to His Word and trusting in His
- 33:58finished work on the cross. He has told us beforehand so
- 34:01that we might stand firm afterward.
- 34:03We wait not for a political idea, but for a person.
- 34:07I want to leave you with a final thought to Mull over as you go
- 34:09about your day. OK, think back to what we said
- 34:11at the very beginning. When you wake up tomorrow and
- 34:14see a headline about a new war breaking out or a devastating
- 34:18natural disaster, your natural instinct will be to look at the
- 34:21screen and ask, what is the world coming to?
- 34:24Right? But based on the rigorous words
- 34:26of Christ we've worked through today, the better, far more
- 34:29accurate question is who is the world coming to?
- 34:32That's good. If history is truly laboring,
- 34:35groaning through violent contractions toward the arrival
- 34:37of a king, how does that change the way you spend your time
- 34:40today?
