- 0:00Hey, you guys, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. Thanks for joining me on another
- 0:06episode on the pod. Happy Monday.
- 0:09Here we are starting a new week and we get a new opportunity to
- 0:13learn more and to walk even more closely with the Lord.
- 0:17I'm so thankful that you are joining me.
- 0:20Whether you're getting ready for the day, maybe you're driving on
- 0:23a walk, whatever you're doing, let's just posture our hearts to
- 0:28receive and to go even deeper with God.
- 0:31Today we're stepping into what is truly the greatest love story
- 0:35of all time. It's not just one written in a
- 0:38novel or in a movie. It's one that defines all of
- 0:42eternity, the love of Jesus. And so we are going to be
- 0:46reading from first John chapter 3, verses 16 to 19.
- 0:53This is how we have discovered Love's reality.
- 0:58Jesus sacrificed his life for us.
- 1:02Because of this great love, we should be willing to lay down
- 1:05our lives for one another. If anyone sees a fellow believer
- 1:10in need and has the means to help him, yet shows no pity and
- 1:15closes his heart against him, how is it even possible that
- 1:19God's love lives in him? Beloved children, our love
- 1:24cannot be an abstract theory that we only talk about, but a
- 1:28way of life demonstrated through our loving deeds.
- 1:33We know that the truth lives within us because we demonstrate
- 1:37love and action which will reassure our hearts in His
- 1:41presence. OK, this is the truest, purest
- 1:47real estate demonstration of love that the world has ever
- 1:50seen and will ever see in the person of Jesus Christ.
- 1:55The greatest love story of all time.
- 1:58Now, our culture loves love stories.
- 2:02We see it in romance movies and books.
- 2:04But if we're honest, those stories pale in comparison to
- 2:10the depth of love displayed in the Gospel because this love is
- 2:15not built on feelings or convenience.
- 2:19It's rooted in sacrifice. And it's been challenging me to
- 2:24ask, am I allowing other quote UN quote love stories to impact
- 2:29me more than this one, More than the story where God gave his
- 2:33everything? Because the gospel is wholly
- 2:37about sacrificial love, not a love that gives to receive
- 2:42something back in return, but a love that gives knowing it may
- 2:46not be returned. Think about this.
- 2:50God saw us fully in our sin, our mess, our brokenness, and still
- 2:57admired us with marvelous love. He called us valuable, His
- 3:03treasured possession, and He didn't want to just be near us
- 3:07like in the Old Testament sacrifices in the temple.
- 3:11He wanted union. So not just proximity, but His
- 3:15spirit living within us. And that's what makes this love
- 3:20story even more powerful because Jesus did not just die and rise
- 3:25again. He then ascended.
- 3:28He is alive, seated at the right hand of the Father.
- 3:31And before he left earth, he told his disciples something
- 3:35that sounds kind of surprising when you first read it, but he
- 3:40said that it was actually better that he goes so that the helper
- 3:45could come. The helper being the Holy
- 3:48Spirit, meaning we don't just look at Jesus from a distance.
- 3:53We don't just study his love like it's a story from the past.
- 3:57We have His very Spirit living inside of us if you proclaim Him
- 4:02as Lord of your life, and if you're a believer, the same
- 4:06spirit that empowered Him now empowers us to love like Him.
- 4:12So when we discuss sacrificial love, this isn't something that
- 4:17we just try to force in our own strength and ability.
- 4:20It's something that we walk in through His spirit on our own.
- 4:26It's hard, it's unnatural to choose others over ourselves,
- 4:32but with Him, we're actually able to live this out.
- 4:37And Jesus knew. He knew it all as he was being
- 4:40whipped, mocked, spit on, insulted.
- 4:45He knew the very people that he was suffering for would still
- 4:50walk away, chase idols, choose other things over him, at least
- 4:55for a time. But he still remained, and he
- 4:58stayed. He persevered through the trial.
- 5:01He chose the cross anyway. It reminds me so much of this
- 5:07book called Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, and it's now a
- 5:11movie, but it's rooted in the story of Hosea from the Bible.
- 5:16And it shows this relentless, pursuing love that doesn't just
- 5:20give up even when it's rejected, even when Hosea's bride runs
- 5:25from him, he keeps going after her.
- 5:28And that's us. We were the ones wondering.
- 5:32We were the ones choosing lesser things.
- 5:35But still, God's love kept pursuing, redeeming, calling us
- 5:41back to him. Jesus's death cleansed and
- 5:46purified us. His resurrection gave us new
- 5:49life, rebirth, and his ascension made a way for his spirit to
- 5:54dwell within us. So now we don't just know about
- 5:58love, we've received it and we're empowered to reflect it.
- 6:04Because love is not just a noun, it's even more so a verb.
- 6:10It's not just something that you feel, it's something that you
- 6:13do. Anyone can say I love you, but
- 6:18the question becomes, what are the lengths that you're willing
- 6:22to go to show it sacrificial love?
- 6:26It just looks different. It looks like dying to yourself
- 6:30in the everyday moments, choosing others over
- 6:34convenience, giving without expecting anything back.
- 6:39So I just want to go into a list of things that I was really
- 6:43trying to think through as I was thinking, OK, what does this
- 6:47actually look like in the modern day in an everyday schedule and
- 6:52routine? So this is obviously not an
- 6:55exhaustive list, but just ideas that the Lord brought to my
- 6:58mind. Taking time, even if it's just
- 7:02an extra 5 minutes to serve someone.
- 7:06So sending an encouraging text, mailing a letter, sending a
- 7:11voice memo telling someone that you're thinking of them.
- 7:15Maybe it's praying intentionally for someone in your own time and
- 7:19letting them know. Ask your server at a restaurant.
- 7:24How can you pray for them? Pay for the person behind you in
- 7:28the drive through line. Be extra patient and gracious in
- 7:32traffic. Y'all.
- 7:34This is a hard one for me. I'm not the most patient driver,
- 7:37but just letting someone go ahead of you Send something
- 7:42thoughtful just because maybe you know that your friend loves
- 7:47flowers or loves a specific food from a restaurant.
- 7:50We literally have Uber eats. You can send that right to their
- 7:53doorstep. Or maybe it's as simple as just
- 7:57smiling and disarming someone with kindness.
- 8:02These things seem small, but they carry a lot more weight
- 8:06than you realize. Because when you love with pure
- 8:09motives, people notice something different in you.
- 8:14They encountered Jesus through you.
- 8:17When I think back to times that I have felt the most loved, it
- 8:22wasn't just words. It was when someone actually
- 8:25showed it selflessly and honestly, unexpectedly.
- 8:30Scripture tells us that there is no greater love than laying down
- 8:35your life for your friends. That's John 15 and 1st
- 8:39Corinthians 13 tells us that faith is made visible through
- 8:44our love. So just some questions that I
- 8:47want to leave you guys with. Are you loving others
- 8:51sacrificially or is it when it's just comfortable for you?
- 8:58Are you all talk when it comes to love or are you actually
- 9:03walking it out in your daily life being intentional?
- 9:08What are some creative, personal ways that you can reflect Christ
- 9:12right where you are, in your job, in your school,
- 9:16relationships? Maybe the most honest question
- 9:21of all is this. What do your actions communicate
- 9:25about how you truly love others? Because loving when it's easy is
- 9:31one thing, but loving when it's hard, when people are difficult
- 9:36or sometimes rude when it costs you something, that is when
- 9:41Jesus shines the brightest through you.
- 9:44So let's move into prayer now. Dear Jesus, thank you for
- 9:51showing us what love authentically looks like.
- 9:56It's not just in words, but in action through sacrifice,
- 10:02pursuit through grace that we in no way deserve.
- 10:08Thank you that you didn't just leave us with an example, but
- 10:12you gave us your spirit to live within us, to help us live it
- 10:16out in the way that you love. Would you help us to walk in
- 10:21that every single day of our lives?
- 10:24Stretch us beyond the comfort, make us look more like you.
- 10:30Jesus, I pray that our lives would radiate your love so
- 10:36clearly that people encounter the person of Jesus Christ
- 10:40through us. We love you, Lord, and we praise
- 10:45you. We honor your name today.
- 10:49In your son's name we pray. Amen.
- 10:52OK guys, well, that's today's episode.
- 10:55Praying that this will just bless you and teach you new
- 11:00things as you walk with the Lord this Monday and rely on Him for
- 11:05strength, for power and not in your own ability.
- 11:10I will see y'all on the next podcast episode.
