- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast after surviving a
- 0:50hellacious Father's Day weekend. My partner and I rhyme Sigler
- 0:57house. What's up, buddy?
- 0:59I'm good man, I'm good man. I heard you were, you were
- 1:03grinding out there over the weekend, whole golf, everything,
- 1:08who with the kids, and I just pull like sitting poolside
- 1:10hanging out having a beer pool with the kids, which was a ton
- 1:13of fun and What did the golf course yesterday?
- 1:17Just hit some balls and has. I'm leaving.
- 1:20My brother all rolls up says, hey, I'm here to Buddy and his
- 1:24pops. You want to join me.
- 1:25The four Why don't you say no to that?
- 1:29They say no to that? Well, that's you, man.
- 1:32It was a pretty was pretty fun weekend.
- 1:34We just kind of we hung around here on on Saturday.
- 1:38And then on Father's Day, actually had a neighbor
- 1:41headache, his daughter's birthday party.
- 1:44So I went over there, there was a ax throwing at the, the kid's
- 1:48birthday party. So I was I was I was doing the
- 1:52axe throwing while the kids were like on the water slides.
- 1:55And then we came back here and had a cookout with some of the
- 1:57parents came over so pretty solid weekend.
- 2:01Awesome, man. Awesome.
- 2:03Well, tonight, folks, we are bringing on a guy that we have
- 2:06mentioned. Numerous times, he is a buddy of
- 2:10ours, going all the way back to Middle School.
- 2:13Legitimately me and Brian with the middle school, high school
- 2:16and college with this guy and he has been in the high school
- 2:19coaching ranks for well over right at 15 years, coached at
- 2:25Halifax County, High School down in South, Boston Virginia our
- 2:29High School alma mater. And then from there, went over
- 2:33to JH Rose High School down in Greenville, North Carolina.
- 2:37Where he produced multiple NFL Talent, multiple Collegiate
- 2:44prospects and also got a inside view to the Camping World.
- 2:49So without further ado, Our buddy, Robbie hambone Compton.
- 2:55Here we go. So I'm fellows.
- 2:58How's it going buddy? What kind of man hanging in
- 3:01there? Didn't have quite the Father's
- 3:06Day weekend experience. You guys had that a little
- 3:08traveling had to get back home. You know, it's trying to trying
- 3:12to get this thing done. One night, earlier late last
- 3:16week but my vocation didn't allow that to happen.
- 3:21So spend a little time in which North Carolina in the mountains
- 3:24and Receptions, not so good. No, it's not so good.
- 3:29That's a good, you know, we try to get it rolling on Thursday
- 3:33didn't quite get it going, but hey, we're here tonight.
- 3:36We're having fun. So that's all that matters.
- 3:38Damn right, well, last week, we got together with Robbie
- 3:41because, you know, we're running through.
- 3:43So that we should talk about giving his getting, getting his
- 3:46Insight lining this up, and it was good.
- 3:49Like we were like, this is going to work.
- 3:50This is awesome. And then, what do you say?
- 3:53Robbie earlier today, I was probably, On the thousand chance
- 3:56they we got to talk the for that.
- 3:59Did you actually have enough signal even in all the stars
- 4:02aligned on Wednesday afternoon when we sat down and had our
- 4:06little little pregame there and then when it was time for prime
- 4:09time and didn't quite happen. Yeah.
- 4:12We got, we got blocked by the great North Wilkesboro Raceway.
- 4:16If I have my way, he's gonna come back.
- 4:19You guys, if you have anything, but do just gonna throw that out
- 4:22there, go check it out, bring back a track with whoops.
- 4:25They didn't even wait, we got to bring that thing back to its
- 4:28prominence. Well, are they getting the
- 4:30Earnhardt? Didn't Earnhardt dumping some
- 4:32money into it. There there there's a bunch of
- 4:34different bunch of different ideas right now of streams of
- 4:38Revenue that they're trying to go in there and bring that Trap
- 4:41Back along with along with a couple other tracks in North
- 4:45Carolina. I don't live in North Carolina
- 4:48right now but I'm a big supporter of those, those old
- 4:52tracks down there and the heart and the origination Stock car
- 4:57racing comes from a lot of those tracks in North Wilkesboro and
- 5:01and Rockingham them. They're going to do some things
- 5:04I think in the future to bring some of that stuff back.
- 5:06But I hope they do because I can remember being kids and I say
- 5:10kids, you know, we were probably, you know, third grade
- 5:14and up those track for fun because when they were at those
- 5:17tracks, it was some bumping and some grinding and some racing
- 5:21and some fist fight after the game after the racism.
- 5:25Parking lots and was thrown in cars, all that fun stuff.
- 5:30People jumping in you know kind of like a typical Saturday night
- 5:33of South Boston Speedway. Oh yeah.
- 5:36Oh yeah, yeah, I'll be there. All the third boys will be there
- 5:40which I was I don't think I'm gonna make it through that one
- 5:44right on again I figured might as well throw it in there.
- 5:48You're not going to find. I'm on a Virginia Tech podcast,
- 5:51you're not going to find a bigger support of Virginia Tech
- 5:53and Jeff Burton. Jab and water are two of the
- 5:58biggest proponents and trying to bring that track back along with
- 6:01Rockingham. So I'll do what I can to help
- 6:04them out. Try to put that word out a
- 6:06little bit. Good stuff.
- 6:08Definitely put the word out there, get the original NASCAR
- 6:11tracks back to maybe bring some people back to the sport of
- 6:13watching it. So yeah.
- 6:15So Robbie obviously we hit you up a couple months ago and
- 6:19started talking to you about camps and obviously June 1, the
- 6:23Dead period finally ended in everything.
- 6:25Be all over this country opened up.
- 6:30Can see not one or two. I think what Virginia Tech has
- 6:33still. Got more going on this week.
- 6:35Oh, absolutely. So many camps.
- 6:37So as we started talking me and Brian kind of we hit up, Robbie
- 6:41one day. We're all like on, you know,
- 6:43Skype and we're chatting. And next thing, you know, like
- 6:46an hour had went by. We're just chatting up the
- 6:48stuff. And it's like, oh, we got an
- 6:51episode. We got an episode.
- 6:52We gotta do this. We gotta bring our boy on.
- 6:54We gotta talk to him about it. So what we're going to start
- 6:58with folks is you see these camps, right?
- 7:03Robbie you. You see guys saying going to the
- 7:05camp, going to the camp. Yep.
- 7:08And then as we started talking to Robbie well how the hell do
- 7:11you? How do you get involved into two
- 7:13camps? The these camps you'll see These
- 7:19camps especially here in the last few years you get Flyers
- 7:25you get you can see driving back the other day from Wilkesboro I
- 7:29noticed on one of the have to digital boards.
- 7:33Now it can image changes, there was one up there, coming outside
- 7:40of Greensboro, I think it was for UNC, of course, it says,
- 7:45Matt Brown is back. Last time I checked Mack Brown,
- 7:47been back three or four years. Graham is back.
- 7:51Check out his football kill back.
- 7:53Yeah, they've got all these dates listed for his camps on
- 7:56the billboard out there. Yeah, I mean so the camps are
- 8:00huge, they're pushing these things and I mean there's so
- 8:05many ways with these camps nowadays, the, the, the big
- 8:11thing Of course as coaches, these colleges and things have
- 8:20these camps. They put these camps on and
- 8:23they'll send mail out flyers and stuff to the coaches.
- 8:27Okay. Especially I know in North
- 8:28Carolina is huge from all the other places.
- 8:32All the other colleges they send out, they have mailers for the
- 8:35different high schools and then send them to the coaches.
- 8:37The coaches can post them in their locker, rooms weight rooms
- 8:40or whatnot, then the kids can see the camps, they're on every
- 8:43one of those mailers that has a thing on there.
- 8:46It says, for prospects, see such and such.com, you know, Virginia
- 8:52Tech or however they wherever their campsite comes zup and the
- 8:58the athletes can go in there and it'll bring up a questionnaire
- 9:02and they can fill out things for the questionnaire to put their
- 9:05information in as a prospect. And once they do that, they'll
- 9:11get they'll get tons of information from those schools.
- 9:13At the prospect they'll get mailers about camps.
- 9:18They'll get Flyers about, you know, it's all its promotional
- 9:23mailings from the college, has a lot of kids.
- 9:26Get that confused with recruiting those things and you
- 9:33know you're going to get the information that they want you
- 9:35to get. It's going to promote them.
- 9:36It's going to look the best they can and a lot of that
- 9:39information comes to those camps.
- 9:41I mean you can put that in there and then it will send you a
- 9:44thing and you can get right to that campsite find it.
- 9:46Sign up. You can pay your dues, they'll
- 9:49link to hotels and stuff in the area and they'll get you hooked
- 9:53right up and right into that camp of ready to go, man. so now
- 9:58but I think you, you ask this the other week about is that the
- 10:00only way No, that's not the only way you have I say, you know, I
- 10:09went to the recruiting part now there's players, typically your
- 10:16bigger schools, your power, five schools, things like that.
- 10:19They're looking for students in there.
- 10:21Looking for those athletes in between their 10th and 11th
- 10:25grade year going into their junior season.
- 10:28Okay. Now when those prospects are
- 10:30there and that 10th and 11th grade season, your toppings,
- 10:34prospects you're hearing about them and and all these
- 10:37recruiting bases and all those things like that, those coaches
- 10:41and those recruiters know who those guys are.
- 10:45And they're talking to those guys and they're telling them,
- 10:46you know, these were the days of our camps and all of these, all
- 10:50of these schools are going to have.
- 10:52If you see the Flyers, you see the stuff, they'll have
- 10:56Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Junior Day cancer Prospect
- 11:03camps. They might have a Saturday
- 11:05afternoon, they might have the seven-on-seven tournament.
- 11:10They may have a teen camp, then they'll have all kinds of
- 11:13cancers, not just the individual camp, but they have all
- 11:16different kinds and they go through things like that and
- 11:22they'll find they'll find those prospects and they'll make sure
- 11:26that those kids get You know, get those Camp dates there and
- 11:31you're going to get those kids of those camps.
- 11:33So, I mean, you you're going to have, you're going to have
- 11:36situations where some of these kids, your top in prospects,
- 11:39they want them there on campus so bad, it's an unofficial
- 11:42visit. They can get them bad without
- 11:44they can waive. The cost of the camp.
- 11:47They give scholarships or, or vouchers for the cost of the
- 11:53camp. If, you know, if the athlete has
- 11:55issues paying for the camp things, like, That but if if
- 11:59they're recruiting that kid and they need their kid to be seen
- 12:02in front of their coaches, that gives going to be at that camp.
- 12:04They're going to get them there while we're on that.
- 12:07I know you kind of talked about you know the different types of
- 12:09camps under Thursday, Friday Saturday and some are on
- 12:12different days. Let's just run through the
- 12:14different types of camps that that you see offered by these
- 12:18universities. Oh yeah, the different kinds of
- 12:23camps. I mean you've got your going to
- 12:25use, you'll see. A stitches.
- 12:29Like I said, individual schools will have their own camps.
- 12:33You'll have safe, Virginia Tech, or you NC NC State.
- 12:38They're going to have a camp and you're going to see it.
- 12:41Nine times out of 10. It's going to be sponsored by
- 12:43their head coach. Yeah, it'll be it'll be Dave
- 12:48during football camps dot llc.com, or, or however it goes.
- 12:54And that nature. I'm not out trying to promote
- 12:56any of them. I don't know.
- 12:58It's lights are but generally they're there ran by a limited
- 13:03liability company from the coaching Point.
- 13:07Not from the University. And I'm sure that holding say a
- 13:11thing behind all of that, I'm not sure how that works.
- 13:15So, that's run essentially, by the coaches, LLC of, they're
- 13:18essentially leasing The Examiner resting spent leasing the
- 13:22facility and things from, from the University.
- 13:26Yep. And the old way they used to do
- 13:28it as they did. A lot of that with so that they
- 13:32could hire coaches and things like that to come in and help
- 13:35with the camps and do some things of that nature.
- 13:38That's how I got involved. With a lot of them, I worked
- 13:42several Camp. I work camps to a dude.
- 13:45You wouldn't see a bunch of NC State.
- 13:48I work some of these. See you I actually did a couple
- 13:54of things that for jigna Tech years ago, but that wouldn't I
- 13:57wouldn't paid for that. I just took a kid there, they
- 13:59found out. I was in the coach so they had
- 14:01me help with a few little things just because they knew I had
- 14:04some it had some experience. But so hold on.
- 14:08Last quick question and this is kind of gonna go back to both
- 14:10pieces. So when you're saying they ran
- 14:12by an LLC or the coaches, LLC your some you're talking about
- 14:16scholarships. So essentially If you have a
- 14:20player right now that they want the kid doesn't have $200 to
- 14:24kid. Can't stay in the hotel room.
- 14:26Essentially they're just saying, hey Robbie, you just get him up
- 14:29here, he will take care of the payment don't worry, they're not
- 14:33gonna, they're not going to provide a place to stay.
- 14:36Okay. Him like that.
- 14:37But, you know, they can, they can get rid of the cost of the
- 14:40camp. Okay.
- 14:41Okay. And I think that's a lot where a
- 14:44lot of the thing comes from being with the coaching stuff
- 14:47and that's just my opinion in my view on it.
- 14:50Yeah, when it comes to dealing with the NCAA, I don't know that
- 14:53you'll ever get a straight answer.
- 14:54Exactly how that runs. But but I mean, I just wanted
- 14:58this one of those fun gray areas at the NCAA, has I think that's
- 15:02a big part of it, but they do. They're going to get this kids,
- 15:04they're those prospects there. They really like they're going
- 15:07to get them there and they're gonna find wait now.
- 15:11Yeah, something something I heard it was mentioned JC price.
- 15:15Who just got hired for Marshall over to Tech obviously Lon Not
- 15:20everything. He mentioned numerous times by,
- 15:22I think me. And you talked about this
- 15:24probably a couple months ago, he was consistently mentioned in
- 15:27date, Justin him to mention to you about.
- 15:29Oh yeah. When Marshall was up here.
- 15:31Yeah. What are those?
- 15:32What are, you know, just just like you have those individual
- 15:37team camps. You'll see especially in those
- 15:41individual camps, you'll get those big Power, five schools.
- 15:44You know, the big names, they'll draw they draw bigger prospects.
- 15:47I mean, that's how it works. Yeah, you know, the bigger.
- 15:49The name to figure the prospects, they'll drop it well
- 15:53and they'll also draw more numbers.
- 15:56So you get a you get a lot of teams that work with guys.
- 16:01I remember work going to several of the Virginia Tech things with
- 16:05couple recruits we had from Halifax every time I went, they
- 16:09are, you could always count on a representative or coach
- 16:12somewhere from JMU being their coach Christ.
- 16:16One of them I think, at the time with J mu that was at several of
- 16:19those. But they, they have, they have
- 16:23schools locally that have ties in to them, whether their
- 16:29coaches played or watch coach. Did that school or coach with
- 16:33that coaching another school, things of that nature.
- 16:36So, we're going to see in is, you know, you've got these
- 16:38top-end prospects, but you've also got some smaller kids, and
- 16:42maybe hadn't been noticed yet, but some of these smaller
- 16:44schools can get in and see it that camp because they're coming
- 16:48to Virginia Tech's camp and may not be coming to JMU.
- 16:50He's Camp. Okay, you may see your school
- 16:53like like Bridgewater or via my Washington and Lee may have
- 16:58somebody in some of those because they're fairly local,
- 17:01they're closer, you know, small division, three schools or
- 17:04something like that. They can pick up prospects that
- 17:06way to by, seeing them at camp and picking things up and that's
- 17:11a lot of does. It does individual team can't.
- 17:15Okay. Now, the biggest Trend now, you
- 17:18get a lot of likes. I'd like camps and these big
- 17:23Mega camps where you might get a group of two or three coaches
- 17:29hosting this huge thing, and it turns into like a regional Camp.
- 17:33So you've got two or three colleges, they're big in North
- 17:37Carolina UNC, Charlotte North Carolina, A&T will hold one, and
- 17:43then they'll have all of the hbcus coming in.
- 17:47You'll have schools like Penn State, Michigan, that come Min
- 17:51and look at things like that, school from far away.
- 17:54And I think what a lot of that is doing is if they're bringing
- 17:57these prospects that are having trouble getting 1,500 miles
- 18:02from, you know, Central North Carolina to Ann Arbor Michigan.
- 18:07Now they can come to these camps because they've been invited to
- 18:11these like camps and they can see prospects in regions that
- 18:15maybe that would take way too much to get them up there
- 18:19outside of their normal footprint.
- 18:20Yeah. There's there's one thing to
- 18:22hold $85 camp and say, hey, I can way that I can take care of
- 18:26$85, we could have been, but you got to get here.
- 18:29It's a lot easier to drive two hours from the coast of North
- 18:33Carolina in the Raleigh, and then get back afterwards, rather
- 18:37than it is, they will waive your your $85 can't fee and Ann Arbor
- 18:41Michigan, but you got to figure out how to get 1,500 miles up
- 18:44here and back. That's a little bit different
- 18:46story. So, that's where those those
- 18:48bigger kids come in, like that. Sure.
- 18:51Did you have those the Nike Elite, the VTO camps and things
- 18:55like that there? Bragging rights measuring stick
- 19:00camps. You know they're going to give
- 19:02you pure numbers. You know you'll have some
- 19:06coaches and stuff there but nine times out of ten, they're held
- 19:10sometime when you're recruiting period is as so-called closed
- 19:14getting 40 times and and and vertical jumps and all those
- 19:22kinds of scores. They're looking at those things
- 19:25and it's a way to kind of compare athletes so that kind of
- 19:28camp. A little bit different, but some
- 19:31of them still some of the things still apply, there is you'll get
- 19:34kids coming in there that are invited.
- 19:37They are and not paying to get into them.
- 19:39A lot of problems. There's gonna be my next
- 19:42question. I was like, how many of with the
- 19:44sponsor Camp? How many of those are like
- 19:46invite only or mostly invite only and how many are are more
- 19:51like those individual camps in terms of if you can pay the
- 19:54money to get there? You can go.
- 19:56Yep. The yarn you can, you can go to
- 20:01any of them when you pay that when you pay that fee to get
- 20:05there, okay? Usually there are no
- 20:08restrictions as they cut off of that age group, usually it's
- 20:12either Rising 9th graders to Rising thin, use, things of that
- 20:16nature, but they don't typically have six and seventh graders,
- 20:21things like that. Now, there are pimps out there
- 20:24that will take the really young kids.
- 20:27I myself have not a huge fan of that, I don't understand why
- 20:31you're going to recruit a kid in sixth grade and that's that's
- 20:38more of a basketball thing. The whole different conversation
- 20:41they'd like to start recruiting early before the kid ever hits a
- 20:43sudden growth spurt. I mean, whatever.
- 20:46But I mean, it lets your a sixth grader that can sling the ball.
- 20:4950 yards. I'm not sure.
- 20:51Oh yeah. But you really going to gain out
- 20:52of that, right? Absolutely.
- 20:54You never know that that that 6:10 ready to swing the ball,
- 20:5950-yard by time. He hits the 10th grade might be
- 21:02270 pounds and might be one hell of a Long Snapper.
- 21:06You never know. But now I'm trying to think
- 21:10Robbie. I go back to a conversation with
- 21:12Kentavious. Treat, one of your players down
- 21:14at Rose. Obviously.
- 21:16Remember the San Francisco 49ers.
- 21:19Gee. He go his Under Armour was that
- 21:22just the game that he go to the camp and the game.
- 21:25He did not. He, he went to, he went to
- 21:31several. He went to a couple of the Nike
- 21:33VTO camps, okay? Going on the armor Camp, okay?
- 21:36Actually, he was invited to the Under Armour All-American Game,
- 21:41remember that? He was also invite.
- 21:44He also went to the u.s. army All-American coming by, and And
- 21:49was the MVP of the u.s. army All-American combine and was
- 21:53invited to the u.s. army All-American game, which is when
- 21:56he played in was he already on the radar of a lot of schools or
- 21:59was when he got to that US Army like combine where it popped
- 22:04where he was getting some Regional attention.
- 22:06I remember we offered him stayed offered him was that where he
- 22:10went from like a regional Prospect I mean chemical.
- 22:13He was 96, he was in the top 100.
- 22:17Yeah, absolutely. He was armed.
- 22:20He was on some Radars early on in his high school career.
- 22:24And I say that because in his ninth grade season, he was in
- 22:27Georgia. Okay, and I played it.
- 22:31He was actually playing it, coffee High School in Georgia.
- 22:35He was, he was playing with another guy that's in, in the
- 22:40NFL. I think he plays for the Chiefs
- 22:42Tyreke Hill. Oh, really.
- 22:45I think they were written in the same High School deal than in
- 22:49the same High School area in court, okay?
- 22:52Yeah, they've got some they've got some pretty good reason to
- 22:55talk about prospects there. I would think Especially two of
- 22:59them faced off in a Super Bowl. I don't know two years ago, but
- 23:04he had some, he had some recruiting ideas when he came to
- 23:08us, okay? And the thing was there was
- 23:11there was a year in there, a year and a half a year where he
- 23:15had moved and people are just kind of wondering where he went
- 23:17to because, you know, is trying to find her then all of a sudden
- 23:20he started popping up at camps, you know, up and down the East
- 23:24Coast where he was popping up and, you know, Georgia, And
- 23:29Georgia Tech and and Ole Miss in some areas down there.
- 23:34Then he started popping up UNC and sea State Virginia Tech.
- 23:38You know, he started popping up in a different area.
- 23:40People start to recognize. Is this kid that good, that he
- 23:45that he spread that for now, but He he started, he started in a
- 23:52different recruiting area, so different coaches started seeing
- 23:55it, and then he hit, then he hit that mvp and at that US Army
- 24:01game and it really took off. I mean, coaches, the coaches do
- 24:05were recruiting him before. Started finding out where it
- 24:07was. You felt it coaches in the
- 24:10recruitment, being it appeared, so that I mean, that's just,
- 24:13that's another one of those camps, you know, he went to
- 24:17several other camps, but kept getting them recognized.
- 24:20And he kept running up the ladder as a higher Prospect kept
- 24:23getting invited to more chance and that's where he ended up.
- 24:26I mean I think that year but he graduated he was the number two
- 24:30or number three. Defensive end in the country
- 24:32behind the Sean hand out of wood bridge in Northern Virginia he
- 24:37ended up going to Alabama. Can Kentavious selected go to
- 24:41n.c. state with a little bit more of a family atmosphere and
- 24:46the thought of playing from the beginning, which he did, he
- 24:48started off for years Yes, he did.
- 24:51We had a bad. A pretty solid defensive line
- 24:53when he was there, too. When he was, he was great.
- 24:55He was a standout but they were pretty solid across.
- 24:57Yeah, thank you. After he was a member of four
- 24:59defensive linemen that were drafted and the first four
- 25:03rounds of the 2018 draft. So yeah, it worked out pretty
- 25:07well for that group of guys. Yep, and he's still in the
- 25:10league. Still under contract with the
- 25:11Niners, absolutely waiting for you.
- 25:14To fly me out to a game, so we can go to sleep.
- 25:17Hey, I'm I was all ready to go to a game.
- 25:19Last year. Oh yeah, we all more how that
- 25:22happened. I had a cardboard cutout of
- 25:25myself to put the stadium out there and make you feel like I
- 25:28was there, so Robbie. So let's let's put a little bit.
- 25:35So we figured out what what's going on with these camps, are
- 25:39about your player, you're a coach, you got some players that
- 25:44are signed up for these camps. What do they expect when they
- 25:47get there? And when they roll into that
- 25:52camp, it's going to it's going to be.
- 25:55I opened into some of those individuals.
- 25:57Like I said, you're going to you're going to have age limits
- 25:59on these camps. A lot of them are going to be
- 26:02rising 9th graders to Rising Juniors, okay?
- 26:06Those Rising 11th graders. I'm sorry Rising seniors.
- 26:10Those rise and 11th graders Rising seniors.
- 26:13They're looking to find their place for the four years when
- 26:18they when they finish High School.
- 26:20Younger guys are trying to are trying to get their named trying
- 26:24to get their self seen trying to get their names on the scene and
- 26:29and start building that reputation and what you're going
- 26:33to get when you get there. All right.
- 26:35They're going to come in a lot of the camps that I've been
- 26:38around. I've worked they're going to
- 26:40roll in and they have some kind of idea of how many they want in
- 26:46the group and they're going to come in and they're going to,
- 26:49they're going to stir and say they're going to have like an
- 26:52hour for registration so you have an hour or time to get
- 26:55there when so many kids get their they're going to start
- 26:58them stretching and they're going to send them off to the
- 27:00side. Then the next group of so many
- 27:02is coming in, they're gonna start on the stretching and get
- 27:04them going. And when that ours up they're
- 27:07going to bring them all together.
- 27:09Start splitting them off by position.
- 27:12Things of that nature and then they're going to start those
- 27:16combine tight workouts. You know, you're going to have a
- 27:21lot of them. Have 40s Pro shuttle, vertical
- 27:27jump or broad jump. Different schools do different
- 27:30ones, vertical jump, broad, jump, you're going to have L
- 27:36drills and things of that nature.
- 27:39So they're going to, they're going to get those combine
- 27:41scores. They're also going to get the
- 27:43height and the weight, things like that.
- 27:46That those those are the ones that tell it, the Big Bopper
- 27:49because college coaches, when they hit that combine, they're
- 27:53going to tell the truth Jack. You're gonna, it's gonna be a
- 27:56lot of kids disappointed in the first ten.
- 27:58Minutes, they get to that camp because their High School coach
- 28:01has been telling them that they're 63.
- 28:04And that cat 6 1 and a quarter. Well, we won't in high school.
- 28:08We will deal the team to think that our skill guys, are bigger
- 28:11than they are and we wanted to thank our linemen or smaller
- 28:14than they are. So when they walk all Wyman and
- 28:16they go well he's only 61 and 260 pounds.
- 28:20Yeah that cat 65 290 Pounds. I'm gonna have my hands full.
- 28:28Is might be fudging the numbers a little bit to get to get a
- 28:32mental Edge, over the world. Yeah.
- 28:37Put some put some tube socks on it.
- 28:39Put your cleats on stayed in the tippy toes.
- 28:41I get a measurement. We're gonna we're gonna we're
- 28:43gonna measure. We're going to measure a skill
- 28:45guys, we're going to measure. I still guys with cleats on and
- 28:49on the tip toes. And you know, if they've got, if
- 28:53they've got the faux hawk, we're going to learn.
- 28:56We're not pressing the line. I'm going to be barefooted with
- 28:59bent knees and slouching. Yeah, we're going to we're going
- 29:04your shoulders for a little bit. We don't need an extra half inch
- 29:08so that the very beginning of that camp.
- 29:10That's why I said it's going to be a little bit out some of
- 29:12these kids. When they do some of these
- 29:14things, they're going to think they're fast and and all of this
- 29:17and they're going to find some kids are truly are fast and it's
- 29:21going to be it's going to awaken some of them that hey I might
- 29:24not I'm here to get my name put out there.
- 29:27I got a lot of work to do before.
- 29:28Or I hit that Rising Junior Rising senior year, where people
- 29:32are going to be trying to push offers and things of that
- 29:36nature. I got a lot of work to do, if
- 29:37I'm going to keep up with those guys, but it gives them that
- 29:40mental Edge. They get to see those.
- 29:42You know what? It's like to be that kind of
- 29:44Prospect and that's a big thing, but it, but it's also a place to
- 29:49where you see a lot of times with these camps and especially
- 29:53this time of year and we watch the rankings.
- 29:55I know they're not everything to you, but we're not as in
- 29:58control. Connected as you are.
- 29:59But you see guys go and fall because you see a guy, they
- 30:02expected. Like you said a little earlier.
- 30:04Oh, 65 to 80 shit. He's 62.
- 30:07And he's 260. Yeah, he's into shorter.
- 30:10He 30 pounds. Lighter or 20 pounds, lighter
- 30:13his arms aren't as long, and and then we run them through the
- 30:17drills. He did good on his drills but
- 30:20he's 62 to 65. He was saying stop 280.
- 30:23Running up drills. Like that.
- 30:25He be skyrocketing. Oh absolutely.
- 30:28Let me ask this. You said what they're getting?
- 30:33They're getting a lot of good stuff.
- 30:34But what aren't they getting that?
- 30:36Some of the kids that you've taken that you've had a
- 30:38sit-down, have conversations with and say, you're not going
- 30:41to get this at these camps that they have to understand.
- 30:45They're not when they go to these camps, nine times out of
- 30:48ten, they're not getting a. Here's how to play your position
- 30:56of football camp. Okay?
- 30:59They're looking at You play this position.
- 31:04We're going to see how you play it and how well you play it.
- 31:06Now, that's not saying that the coaches and the people running
- 31:09the camp, while I'm going to give them some tips or some
- 31:11things, that'll make them a little better and help them out
- 31:14in certain ways. But they're not, you know,
- 31:17they're not going to go from the start.
- 31:19This is how we do our stance. This is how we do this.
- 31:21This is how we do that. Now, they may go over some of
- 31:24that so that they can understand what the individual is looking
- 31:28at. Okay?
- 31:29This is how we this is how we work with.
- 31:31Backers of, this is how we work with DB, and this is what we
- 31:35look for now not all coaches, look for that.
- 31:37And I've heard coaches to, you know, you can you do it your
- 31:40way? Because when it comes down to it
- 31:42in August September and October you got to do it the way, your
- 31:46coach is telling you to do it because if you turn around and
- 31:48tell them coach Huxtable was one of the best of them.
- 31:51He was linebackers coach at NC State for several years.
- 31:54Those trucks will said, I can tell you all.
- 31:56I want to hear. He said, but if you go back to
- 31:58your coach and tell him to coach Huxtable told you to do it this
- 32:01way, I'm going to you lied to get it done.
- 32:11He said, because I'm not going to tell you that our way is any
- 32:13better than anybody else's, and you just have to do that.
- 32:16So if you're going into that camp expecting to learn how to
- 32:20play, you know, Virginia Tech's defense, you're probably, you
- 32:25probably be better off taking that money and buying, you know,
- 32:28Frank Beamer's special teams book.
- 32:31Or something like that. But I mean you're not going to
- 32:36learn to complete specific social position or anything that
- 32:39has cancer. They're going to learn what you
- 32:41know about playing the position playing leverage, playing the
- 32:44game and how you do it. If you want to play back or
- 32:47you're better off by Bud Foster's, coaching Bible than
- 32:50you are going to a camp. Absolutely.
- 32:55All right, so we're at a good part here.
- 32:57We're going to take a brief break and have a message from
- 33:00our digital partner. Alright, so we're back guys.
- 33:04Now Robbie something. I didn't know this.
- 33:07Well, maybe I didn't know this, but I just didn't remember us
- 33:09talking about it, but you and obviously, guys, you coach with
- 33:14you guys have actually evaluated for schools.
- 33:18Correct. Is this something that is pretty
- 33:20common among the High School coaches at P5.
- 33:24Cams, or is it more relationships building between
- 33:28the school and the head coaches of those schools?
- 33:32I Think it's, I think it's, I think it's got a lot to do with
- 33:35the relationships. You build with what some of the
- 33:37coaches and they they learned, they understand the trust and
- 33:42and how you're coaching things, and what you're doing.
- 33:45And things of that nature, a big part of it anyway, a big part of
- 33:49the whole process is that relationship.
- 33:51You build with those coaches if they if those coaches are
- 33:56evaluating your players and You're telling them, they're
- 34:01this and they're that, and then they get to the school or they
- 34:04get to these camps and they don't back that up.
- 34:06Then there's a question about you know, what your portray into
- 34:10them. But when you, when you're
- 34:12constantly telling these coaches that are recruiting these kids,
- 34:14what kind of kids they are, I tell kids all the time when
- 34:18we're doing recruiting stuff, we're talking to the coaches.
- 34:20I'm not going to lie to the coach, I'm going to tell them
- 34:22the truth. If you're, if you're 100% motor
- 34:25kid, but you're not the greatest technical player.
- 34:30Or things of that nature. I'm going to let him know that
- 34:33if your craptastic individual that doesn't want to listen and
- 34:39doesn't want to follow the coaching but a spectacular
- 34:42athlete. I'm going to tell the coach that
- 34:44because I'm not going to have any, it sounds, it sounds kind
- 34:48of personal, but I'm not going to have my reputation ruined by
- 34:51sending the kid out there, that I praised and said we're so
- 34:54great. And then it turned around and
- 34:56not be that player. I mean, we're getting honest
- 34:59with them. Are you putting your name on it?
- 35:01You going to you going to tell the truth?
- 35:02Absolutely. And coaches coaches.
- 35:05See those things and they understand that base.
- 35:08They start to see that the players you're sending them and
- 35:12what their reputation is and how you evaluate things.
- 35:15And I mean, I've had some situations where I've had
- 35:18coaches that would that allow me to give my input on players and
- 35:24things of that nature. Now, by no means.
- 35:26Am I doing You know, they're recruiting for them or anything
- 35:30like that. But I mean, I've had coaches
- 35:32that have allowed me to give my input on what the, what the
- 35:35players at those camps, you know, how they performed and
- 35:39what they did well and and how they could improve.
- 35:41If they would fit into the situation, especially one coach
- 35:45in particular that I worked with.
- 35:47I knew. And he knew that we worked for
- 35:49so long together, that we actually ran a lot of the same
- 35:53drills and everything your practices and the he knew he I
- 35:58knew that I knew exactly what to look for in these drills and the
- 36:01things he was doing. So he felt comfortable with me
- 36:04running a drill just like he would, you know, his own GA or
- 36:08things of that nature. So, I mean, that that kind of
- 36:10worked out and it was it was very useful at the camp.
- 36:16So let's talk about the evaluation so we can start.
- 36:21This is when looking for something we're gonna start
- 36:23with, we're going to start with but with my bread and butter
- 36:26offensive line defensive line, well we're when you're
- 36:28evaluating those positions at a camp, what type of things are
- 36:34you looking for? From the defensive line?
- 36:36What type of things are you looking for, from the offensive
- 36:38line? All right?
- 36:39How long is this podcast? Right?
- 36:41Don't matter. What was you wanted to take a
- 36:45sip? Take us that if I take this is
- 36:47yeah that got a wet. The whistle here to get this one
- 36:50going. There we go.
- 36:53The camps like we said before you know you got a bunch of
- 36:56different kinds of camps. The the big like there's big VTO
- 37:01camps and things like that, nine times out of ten, all they're
- 37:04going to get out of that. Most of the time is your combine
- 37:08stuff. You will get some that they get
- 37:11lighter enough that you'll get some one-on-ones with some
- 37:14offensive lineman has to be. Bees and receivers and
- 37:17linebackers and running backs. Things of that nature but a lot
- 37:22of those super camps or the regional camps and stuff you're
- 37:26going to have anywhere from 800 to 1,000 kids show up.
- 37:30It's hard to get all of those kids in the two-and-a-half hour
- 37:33period, through all of that stuff and give any of them a
- 37:35chance to do a one-on-one. Yeah we smaller camps in your
- 37:40you're more focused sponsor camps I guess you could call
- 37:44them. You're going to See, one-on-ones
- 37:46and things like that. Now, Like you said it
- 37:50bread-and-butter do the o-line d-line.
- 37:53I mean, I play do line through school, the vast majority of my
- 37:59experience in coaching has been with offensive and defensive
- 38:02line. I've coached linebackers dbe's
- 38:07receivers tight ends running back.
- 38:09I've coached all of those at some point but my biggest
- 38:12things, o line of do you I know what you'll notice.
- 38:15A lot of these, a lot of these camps when it It's the
- 38:18one-on-ones. There's no helmets.
- 38:20There's no shoulder pads. Now a lot of the, a lot of these
- 38:23camps there are going to where they can use helmets and a lot
- 38:26of that is on the new rules with the concussions and things of
- 38:29that nature. But a lot of times before there
- 38:32were no helmets involved in it. So in that case you get you get
- 38:37a lot of pass rusher in a lot of Russian and things of that
- 38:41nature and it's going to take part of that.
- 38:45I don't want to say part of the evaluation out of it, but it's
- 38:48going to take certain parts of things out because these players
- 38:51are going to be conscious of where the other player is and
- 38:55whether their opponent is and things like that because they're
- 38:59not, they don't want to take a chance of getting hurt and we
- 39:01understand that. So a lot of the offensive
- 39:03linemen defensive lineman, the first thing you look for is is
- 39:07there there get off their footwork offensive, linemen and
- 39:12defensive line handwork. Things of that nature.
- 39:15It's really about that first step.
- 39:19You can tell a lot about a pass rusher and an offensive lineman
- 39:23by that first step. You know, if that first step for
- 39:27the defensive lineman is quick, fasten the ground and he gets
- 39:33close as a gap, tremendously between him and the offensive
- 39:36linemen right? At the snap of the ball.
- 39:38There's no delay. Things of that nature, you know,
- 39:42he can probably beat that guy, he can get in if he dies.
- 39:45Mrs. Wyman if he can close the gap, he gets an advantage, the
- 39:48offensive lineman, if he can get that step back, his feet aren't
- 39:51too wide. He's got good balance and he
- 39:54keeps that separation. He's got a better chance of
- 39:56winning that thing so that first step is huge and then after that
- 40:00first step you're looking a lot at where those hands have being
- 40:03placed. If they offensive lineman's
- 40:05hands are close together. He's got good extension, good
- 40:08separation and keep a defensive lineman away from him.
- 40:12I mean, he's got a good chance to keep making steps.
- 40:15And keeping that separation that defensive.
- 40:17Lineman can close that separation.
- 40:19Get his hands on the linemen on the offensive line where he can
- 40:22move him and control the situation.
- 40:24He's got a good chance of winning that and for us a lot of
- 40:27it ends there. Okay.
- 40:30Some of the kids you'll see a lot of those one-on-one.
- 40:33You know you evaluate you've evaluated the first step and all
- 40:36of this the offensive linemen clearly wanted but the defensive
- 40:39lineman still gets to the bag. Or the barrel or whatever.
- 40:43This is Lady quarterback. Okay, good job, kid.
- 40:46Let's see what he does and he continued to push hard and fast
- 40:49through all of that. Got to the Barrel Spring, it all
- 40:52the way back to your spot. Okay, he's a hard-working kid.
- 40:55He's tremendous now granted, it took him four and a half seconds
- 40:58to get to the barrel. The offensive line.
- 41:00Probably beat it. Yeah.
- 41:03Four and a half seconds of the quarterback, hadn't got the ball
- 41:05out and he's knocking at barrel down, then he's probably done
- 41:17some really good things there so you just have to evaluate that.
- 41:20Now, would you in the opposite situation is what you're looking
- 41:24for, the fat kid, you know, three and a half seconds out.
- 41:27He offensive lineman's got separation and he just kind of
- 41:30gives it up gets pushed around or pancakes.
- 41:33And the offensive lineman's laying on top of it, then you're
- 41:35going to start kind of questioning, you know, is that
- 41:37kid got to work ethic to continue to fight just in case
- 41:41the quarterback is holding the ball that long.
- 41:43Yeah. So the evaluation kind of goes
- 41:46that way with those guys so you're looking for a lot of the
- 41:50initial stuff and then you're looking for a kind of effort.
- 41:53Absolutely that. After that point now I mean when
- 41:56it when it comes to a full pads and things like that, things can
- 41:59change in a split second you know, you could have a great
- 42:02first Up that offensive lineman could have a an amazing
- 42:06upper-body strength to just even though he's creepy, you've
- 42:09closed that separation, he can latch on and extend it out and
- 42:14take that something take the separation back.
- 42:17I mean there's things like that, but you're not going to see a
- 42:19lot of that in the into 10 ones without pads, and things of that
- 42:24nature. And then here in the last year,
- 42:26of course, well, they didn't have camps then, but they got to
- 42:30a because the covid, but they got to a point.
- 42:32Point at one time where a lot of folks they had to have pads in
- 42:35between them, more of the safety issues, things and stuff like
- 42:39that, and it's really hard to evaluate the continuance of a
- 42:42lot of that stuff for this pads too.
- 42:48You ever see like, for example, you mentioned in the offensive
- 42:51line and I know I've seen videos where the offensive linemen
- 42:57celebrating because he's throwing the guy.
- 42:59Yeah, great. You look where he threw the guy.
- 43:03Well, you just killed your quarterback and his ACL is done
- 43:06and you have no team. So does it does it as a coach
- 43:10when you see especially offensive defensive line drills
- 43:12because they are so focused. Do you ever is it ever
- 43:17something, the coaches, the P5, the head coaches, or the
- 43:20positional coaches who are working on you?
- 43:22Looking at, like this guy thought he won that said, he's
- 43:25celebrating pimp walk and act like he's the shit and that
- 43:30coaches said over here like son. No you don't you don't need to
- 43:35do that. Is that a gun?
- 43:36You just got ten yards and he killed your quarterback.
- 43:38Absolutely. Now are you just like we said
- 43:41with the with the defensive lineman, you know, as he did all
- 43:44that that and he got slapped around for four and a half
- 43:46seconds. Then the offensive line was kind
- 43:48of like, all right, I've whipped him enough, he spends back runs
- 43:52off and blast the barrel. Now he thinks he's awesome.
- 43:55Well, five seconds ago you would have been off but poor and a
- 43:58half seconds to get there. Didn't do you much good?
- 44:00Do that often climb in the first step?
- 44:02He lost his constituency lost a separation.
- 44:05He took bad steps. His feet were real wide.
- 44:08The only choice he had was to grab a whole and, you know, Sumo
- 44:12into the ground, okay? Well, the more than likely we're
- 44:19going to see if he's going to get to a side with both hands
- 44:21out and he thinks okay to, he never got to the quarterback.
- 44:26I took him out or he comes down hard inside and he defensive
- 44:31lineman is laid out so far and he just slammed them down.
- 44:35He slammed him right through the quarterbacks knees, you know, he
- 44:39thinks he's done something, but the coaches going.
- 44:41Well, if you'd have taken your step and get to put your hand,
- 44:44Placement, right? And done all that.
- 44:46The start with even never beat you there anyway.
- 44:49But it's all on, it's all sometimes that will show you how
- 44:52the kids is is unfortunately show you how to kid is coached
- 44:57if they think that's doing what they need to be doing.
- 45:00Yeah and I mean it's definitely an evaluation tool if you think
- 45:04you're winning a rep doing that? The yeah the coaching definitely
- 45:08there or you sure you're not you're not absorbing it and I'm
- 45:14guessing that goes into things. All right, so let's jump off.
- 45:16Y'all bread and butter we talked about it for about 10 minutes.
- 45:20And let's move on to the next one.
- 45:22Now, offensive defensive line is we you get someone directly in
- 45:25front of you things to look for. Oh yeah, we talked about was
- 45:29running back in linebackers, Robbie when, when these coaches
- 45:32are looking at running back, what are they specifically
- 45:35looking for in camps? Because again, like you
- 45:39mentioned already they're not in pads and helmets, they can't do
- 45:42everything, but what specific variable for running backs?
- 45:45Well, one thing you'll see a lot in camps, and we We kind of
- 45:50touched at it earlier is when they go in they're going to
- 45:53separate them by position and you're going to go off with your
- 46:00offensive line group, you're going to go off with your
- 46:02defensive line group. You're going to go off with you,
- 46:04running back groups, your linebacker groups, each player,
- 46:08a come into this thing more than likely, it's going to have a
- 46:11position that they're working. Most of these guys that they
- 46:15come in. And they're going to work two
- 46:17positions. It's going to be it's going to
- 46:20be notified early that they're working, two positions, okay?
- 46:23And a lot of times, a lot of times, the two positions are
- 46:27going to be on the same side of the ball.
- 46:29So you may have one kid that that's working linebacker and
- 46:32strong safety. Very seldom.
- 46:35Do you see a kid that's going to come in to a camp and work
- 46:38linebacker and running back or something of that?
- 46:43You may you may catch a linebacker then it's going to do
- 46:46something. After the camp as a Long
- 46:48Snapper, or special teams guy, something like that, but you're
- 46:52not. It's hard to go in and do the
- 46:55drills on both sides like that. So we may get a kid that does
- 47:00linebacker and strong safety because at his high school, he
- 47:03may be you know, weak side linebacker.
- 47:07That's actually play in the strong safety position that it
- 47:11was. It's kind of weird in those
- 47:13situations, but they split them up like that.
- 47:16And you're going to do drills and things specific to that
- 47:20position. So you're going to see in those
- 47:23drills by position. What those kids do with those
- 47:28athletes to do in, run situations, or read situations,
- 47:35all of those type things. When you get to these one-on-one
- 47:3995% of the time, it's a passing situation.
- 47:46So that makes when you when you start talking about running
- 47:49backs and linebackers, that makes things a lot different in
- 47:53the evaluation process simply because well as a running back
- 48:00You're going to have play-action, and then sometimes
- 48:02you're going to have free release.
- 48:04Tight wraps. Yeah, when you're in, that
- 48:07one-on-one situation, you're still going to see some play
- 48:10action to Route. So you still see some free
- 48:13release routes, things like that.
- 48:15But you're not going to see that running back in a one-on-one
- 48:18situation step up in the in the play action and then walk chip
- 48:24the the Russian egg. Yeah.
- 48:26You know you're not going to do that in one on ones, you're
- 48:28going to him fake that and then run his choice.
- 48:31Route, over the middle against the linebacker.
- 48:34You're going to see him run their free release bubble or
- 48:37swing out of the back field or the wheel route, which is who
- 48:44will write. I have nightmares about will
- 48:46route, I love will routes. I do too.
- 48:48As you know, if I want to call an offense in the guy out there,
- 48:53I do. But you know, there's only so
- 48:55many times you can, you could tell a linebacker.
- 49:00Only so many times you can tell him in a day to watch the wheel
- 49:04route before, maybe he might watch it before the game
- 49:14tonight. Probably not.
- 49:18We got to let one get by at least.
- 49:21Oh yeah, we just have to hope did the running back.
- 49:25Does not catch very well. There we go.
- 49:28But unfortunately. Most of the time is running
- 49:31back. Doesn't catch very well.
- 49:32Where's the crawler going to be y back again?
- 49:38I get I guess I trap right? He's still getting good
- 49:42information man, that's all that matters.
- 49:45The one-on-ones with running backs and linebackers are going
- 49:47to be past situations. So me being a defensive
- 49:51coordinator for the last several years.
- 49:55I hated the parts of some of those 10 ones because my
- 49:59linebackers are going to, they know, right off the bat, I'm in
- 50:04a one-on-one situation in the past situation.
- 50:07So I have to make sure that they're still taking their
- 50:12proper what I call foot fire. Still taking proper steps where
- 50:15they're initially reading? Yep.
- 50:18Okay, that part is going to be evaluated, you're going to see
- 50:21coaches looking at that. And there they want to know.
- 50:24Because that kid is that kid going to be reading on the play.
- 50:27Even if he knows his third and 17 and The Scouting Report says
- 50:32they throw 97 percent of the time on Third and anything, 7
- 50:37plus the he's going to pass you steal, better be foot fire and
- 50:42ready to read because they might run a draw for 18 yards or
- 50:45third, but he better be ready for that hokey quarterback power
- 50:48on Third and 17. So I mean, you've got to be
- 50:52ready for it because yes, it's 97 percent of the time because
- 50:56three percent of the time that they're not in those
- 50:59one-on-ones, you're going to get, you're going to get
- 51:01especially younger kids. They're not making that good
- 51:05fire step. They're not making that read
- 51:06step, they immediately eyes go to the running back, there
- 51:09running, downhill cords running back, which they Juiced in a
- 51:13heartbeat, and it's bad news that, but that's where that
- 51:17evaluation comes in. You know, we kept running back,
- 51:20going out. You're looking for, you're
- 51:22looking for his route is he is he going to deepen the bubble?
- 51:27Is he running to Flat? Is he gaining ground before he
- 51:29supposed to? When he's running this Choice,
- 51:32route, or things of that nature, as a running back going in and
- 51:36forcing the linebacker to make a decision, which way to go.
- 51:39So he can break his choice. Route to create separation.
- 51:43The same thing with the linebacker is he closing ground
- 51:46too early and taking the field advantage away from itself these
- 51:52leverage. Yeah yeah he watching the
- 51:54running back and not paying attention to anything.
- 51:56Nothing else because a lot of times as we know football you
- 52:02know the quarterback might be reading that linebacker.
- 52:04If he puts his eyes directly on the running back and takes off
- 52:07in in there and he's got a bead on that running back and not
- 52:10making his reads and keys that inside receiver might be coming
- 52:14in and setting up where he left. You know, you may be getting a
- 52:18slant or a or Shoot. I can't even tell you the name
- 52:25of it right now too. Late at night.
- 52:28I'm lost working on my on my Master's, for my special
- 52:33education degree and it's got my mind blown right now, I'm losing
- 52:36work. They're running hooks, or come
- 52:41back and things and they're sitting down with a linebacker
- 52:43left. It shows that they're not making
- 52:46their reads, you know, because he's taken off out there to the
- 52:49back because it's the only thing in that drill.
- 52:52That's Yeah, but you have to show that you're still making
- 52:55your, your angle, your 45 degree angle or whatever, you're
- 52:59covering your Zone, if that's what the coverage is, or you're
- 53:02playing your main underwear. It is more like a dig.
- 53:05If you try to find the wide receiver, tries to find the soft
- 53:08spot there. Absolutely.
- 53:10So nice, big piece, when doing especially on run back,
- 53:13linebacker drill, especially for the linebacker is He's having
- 53:18the mentality of. I don't give a damn, you know
- 53:21what the running play? We thing you normally do because
- 53:25the guy looking at you over there, that's what he wants to
- 53:28see if you're doing all this stuff.
- 53:30He starts saying, okay, this kid's got a head on his
- 53:33shoulders, his kids listening, this kids understanding how to
- 53:35be coached by his high school coach to say.
- 53:38Okay, I've got to do my read. I've got to step by step into
- 53:40the Gap. Do I step out and be like, what
- 53:43are the, where do I go now? From the running back side,
- 53:48You've mentioned route, obviously.
- 53:49They're looking at hands, but I'm assuming as much as
- 53:53leverage, it is for the linebacker.
- 53:55It's the running back when they get that ball, one-on-one
- 53:58understanding The Leverage. Against the linebacker.
- 54:02I absolutely like again I'm assuming it's more heading
- 54:06things you're sitting here with it.
- 54:07All right? There's no one blocking out
- 54:09there. You're going to run that way.
- 54:12I'm sure there are times where you probably sit there and say,
- 54:15well, of course there's no one blocking out there.
- 54:17You got an angle on him, you're going to get 15 yards.
- 54:20Yeah, that's not going to happen every time.
- 54:23No, because you've got a shitty wide receiver who don't know how
- 54:26to block in the quart bags coming in.
- 54:28You can't give it that way. Every decided it would be easier
- 54:31if he didn't block, you know. Yeah, I just I just whipped a
- 54:37decent linebacker because I created good separation and I
- 54:40can angle away from him. You dip?
- 54:42There's Kam Chancellor. Standing back and safety
- 54:44decisions. You're not getting any further
- 54:46than this. I mean that's yeah, that's a big
- 54:49in the boom. And the legion will be there to
- 54:53help you simple. But I mean is that running back
- 55:00there looking at you know yes he charges that backer and he
- 55:04pressed a certain way and got a release so he got the linebacker
- 55:07to play. His is outside half.
- 55:09He turned to the inside, over the middle of the field, catches
- 55:12the ball. How is he?
- 55:14We know what is he doing? Where is he catching?
- 55:15The ball? Is he catching it with his
- 55:17hands, he catching it. You know underneath into his
- 55:20chest is he protecting the ball? Things of that nature, how he's
- 55:24tucking the ball away, is he turning up field and go is he
- 55:27making an angle, you know, different things like that
- 55:30they're looking forward to figure out, you know, in the
- 55:34thing use Like sometimes they'll tell they'll tell you
- 55:38beforehand, okay? You've got a single high safety
- 55:41over the top that you know if you turn straight up a middle of
- 55:45the field, he's going to be in your mouth, he's gonna knock you
- 55:47out. So you better take the angle
- 55:49towards the side, where the corner got cleared or something
- 55:52of that nature. Just like the thing, you know
- 55:54they're one-on-ones but did we ever?
- 55:57You know, they look at that Library.
- 55:59Do we ever tell you? It was man coverage.
- 56:02No youyou went off blazing to the running back, you know, yeah
- 56:08you had him covered but the hook in the middle called the ball,
- 56:12they caught the seam over the top because you didn't have a
- 56:15own people, is you to play this. I'm going to come down to where
- 56:18I thought it was man to man. Well you should be, you should
- 56:21be finding out what the four years before he and coaches will
- 56:25do things like that to get that evaluation because a lot of
- 56:28times you'll get, will you playing man-to-man?
- 56:31Yes, sir. I was Did we tell you, who's man
- 56:34know what should you have done? I should have dropped into my
- 56:36zone. Kept my eyes on the running back
- 56:39and look for the inside receiver coming into my zone, okay, they
- 56:43just did a self evaluation right there.
- 56:44The kid knows what to do, but thinking that it was one-on-one,
- 56:48he did what he had to. And now, all of a sudden, I've
- 56:52got the evaluation of what he's going to do in one-on-one
- 56:55situation and what he's going to do on the other one.
- 56:58So, I mean, they're giving the coaches, the information there,
- 57:01and he coached arson. See their process of how they're
- 57:03thinking and it really goes a long way into evaluating those
- 57:07things. This thing they need to run it
- 57:09back. I mean he's coming out and you
- 57:11know it, what did we tell you today?
- 57:15God is always going to be one on one and he didn't he didn't come
- 57:18down at you then, what should you have done?
- 57:21You should have turned it into a wheel and went on up field.
- 57:24Well, you should have stopped at a certain spot and waiting for
- 57:26the screen to come back in, you know, however, they suggest that
- 57:31you run, that particular route. Yeah, so I would like a swing it
- 57:35like knowing where the blocks are in the alley.
- 57:37Absolutely. So goes on and they can just ask
- 57:43a simple question and it gives them a lot of it.
- 57:45So again, a lot of the stuff for especially running next
- 57:49linebackers because you don't have there's a lot more going on
- 57:52than just. You got to go beat that guy.
- 57:55Like that's a lot. It's more of.
- 57:58They get to see the process and they get to see the mental
- 58:00aptitude of these kids, where, you know, can you catch a ball?
- 58:05Great? Did you catch it?
- 58:06Did you tuck it, right? And then did you know, Where to
- 58:09go appropriately. When we'll play, we call?
- 58:11What Play We called on defense for you to see.
- 58:13Yep. Now What what's next for on?
- 58:18All right up. Next we're going to do a little
- 58:20wide receiver in DB, let's have a little fun with this one.
- 58:23Now wide receivers and DVDs are I got a question?
- 58:27A question? Yeah, man.
- 58:28Is this the biggest shit talking.
- 58:29Groups of all of them. Yes.
- 58:34Without a doubt. Just need a confirmation.
- 58:38Yeah. Not even close.
- 58:40Yes, look at me. And I don't know if some of my
- 58:43guys that I've coached over the years, Sing the see this thing
- 58:47which I hope they do. I hope y'all get 10,000 views on
- 58:50this thing. I don't know that I'm doing, I
- 58:53don't know that you haven't me as a guest.
- 58:55He is going to draw quite numbers of Daryl Captain.
- 58:59You never know solo. Not that cool.
- 59:03Obviously that I've fooled enough to think they know that.
- 59:06I know what I'm talking about Darryl Tapp does know what he's
- 59:10talking about. So, you know, they would you
- 59:14wide receivers in your DVDs. Nine times out of ten are going
- 59:17to be the yeah, they're going to talk to trash.
- 59:19Now that that's where it's going to be if you want to go to a
- 59:22camp and you want to see the talking back and forth in the
- 59:26competition and then somebody backing it up and somebody
- 59:29getting say pump down and things like that.
- 59:33Go to the wide receiver, DB competitions and just watch it
- 59:36because it is what it is. And but along with that, you're
- 59:43going to go in there and you're going to insult.
- 59:45Cases, you're going to see a lot more of the mental aspects to
- 59:49the things and those one-on-ones at that wide receiver and DVDs.
- 59:54If you catch the right wide receivers and DPS.
- 59:57All right, so I'm gonna start with the White House, okay?
- 1:00:04Okay. A lot of your chest games going
- 1:00:07to happen there because we're going to see is they're going
- 1:00:09to? They're going to start seeing
- 1:00:12that, you know what each other do we In different situations
- 1:00:16how each other play and they're going to try to take advantage
- 1:00:20of certain things that each of them do and things of that
- 1:00:23nature. Now wide receiver the first
- 1:00:24thing they're going to do is they're going to walk out there
- 1:00:27as us. Coaches is evaluating these wide
- 1:00:30receivers we're looking. Probably for three things.
- 1:00:35All right, okay, we're probably looking at their initial
- 1:00:40footwork. Okay.
- 1:00:42At the snap of the ball of their feet, staying in place, and
- 1:00:45dancing and doing all this unnecessary movement.
- 1:00:50I mean we've seen we've seen else a different levels that
- 1:00:55they run ten yards, they never left the line.
- 1:01:02Then after that, is their release.
- 1:01:05And then their route Okay. So that footwork now I'm not
- 1:01:11saying you can't take a step or two to get them to do because
- 1:01:15that's what that could be part of your release.
- 1:01:17Yeah. Got initial step wide to the to
- 1:01:20the boundary initial step wide to the field to get that D.
- 1:01:25Be to try to turn the shoulders right then?
- 1:01:27Yeah. But that release.
- 1:01:30If it's a man coverage is you trying to to get him to
- 1:01:36overextend and Punch early. So you can get his hands down
- 1:01:40and get the advantage over it. If they're playing softer or if
- 1:01:44they're playing zone. So that you what you're doing
- 1:01:47with the release is your press on a certain area, you may be
- 1:01:50pressing his outside shoulder to get him to flip his hips,
- 1:01:54towards the sideline and then you can cut underneath him to
- 1:01:56make him go all the way around. Get what I'm saying?
- 1:02:00Yep. Okay.
- 1:02:01You may press his inside shoulder to get him to open
- 1:02:03inside and then you cut behind them and streak up the sideline
- 1:02:07vertically. You know all of those are the
- 1:02:09releases and things like that. So you're looking immediate and
- 1:02:13those wide receivers are going to look at those DVDs and go.
- 1:02:16He really likes to flip his hips quick because he knows, I'm
- 1:02:22Excuse me, bless you, we can't do that in post production, you
- 1:02:27know, that's awesome because he knows that, you know, he he
- 1:02:33knows I'm faster than him vertical so he's gonna flip quit
- 1:02:36things of that nature. Yeah.
- 1:02:38So those bit, those are big things in those releases and
- 1:02:41stuff like that. And then the next thing that you
- 1:02:44want to look at with that weird eye receiver is their route.
- 1:02:47You know if that care if he's supposed to be if he's get off
- 1:02:50coverage and he's supposed to be running a slant, is he running
- 1:02:54up sticking his foot in the ground and taking the slant
- 1:02:57right now, from 5 yards to six and a half yards or if he kind
- 1:03:04of rounding it off at 5 and making it to about, Tate is he
- 1:03:08really running a post instead of a sling, it's all about the
- 1:03:13depth of things because if you're running against a typical
- 1:03:19typical one high safety look, you know, and we want you to run
- 1:03:22a slant because we ran the bubble with the back behind you.
- 1:03:26The linebacker is dropping 45 from four and a half or five
- 1:03:30yards to about seven or eight. Okay, if you run that slant from
- 1:03:37five to six and a half, you're going to stay underneath that
- 1:03:40linebacker which gives you an advantage if you run it too far
- 1:03:43high that linebacker can cut you off.
- 1:03:47Okay. Well regardless of the
- 1:03:50linebacker, if you cut that thing and you get to that six
- 1:03:52and a half and then you build to the seven, you're above the
- 1:03:56middle linebacker by about two yards and still under the
- 1:04:00safety. If you cheated it too much, and
- 1:04:03you got to that eight, eight and a half yards, you may be running
- 1:04:07it at free safety, this not dropping so hard because they're
- 1:04:09out there. Sure.
- 1:04:10So it's all about how they're running that route and where
- 1:04:13that space and comes in because I mean a matter of three or four
- 1:04:17inches can, can mean you catch any ball or the defender
- 1:04:20catching the ball. Yep.
- 1:04:22So those routes have to be crispy things.
- 1:04:25So things like that. We let me ask you this, do you
- 1:04:29care so much with the wide receiver when you're evaluating
- 1:04:31Awaiting them, the catch itself, I do not why, and I don't get a
- 1:04:38lot of chance to evaluate receivers and a lot of these
- 1:04:41camps. Um, but I don't take a lot on
- 1:04:45that simply because 9 times out of 10.
- 1:04:48These kids are at camp. And there, you know, this kid is
- 1:04:52from Rose High School in. The next kid is from, you know,
- 1:04:57Cape Fear, High School in the next kid is from Havelock, high
- 1:05:00school and the quarterback is from, you know, Meadowbrook in
- 1:05:06Richmond. Yeah.
- 1:05:08Well, he's never played with these three kids, he does the
- 1:05:12timings different. This quarterback may be
- 1:05:15left-handed compared to all three of those receivers
- 1:05:17quarterbacks of right-handed, different spin.
- 1:05:19Yeah, that kid can go out and get 10 passes thrown to him and
- 1:05:25he catch 2 out of the 10 and I can still evaluate him as an
- 1:05:29exceptional receiver, because I seen on tape that this kid
- 1:05:33catches 85 or Senator ball, is thrown cool.
- 1:05:37But a different quarterbacks. Go, make a different You know
- 1:05:40different altogether in his evaluation just because the ball
- 1:05:44may be throwing different. Now granted they're going to
- 1:05:47have to get used to a different quarterback sooner or later.
- 1:05:49Yeah. But there's going to be a lot of
- 1:05:52reps to get through that. Yeah, it did he may take 10 reps
- 1:05:56at this Camp as a receiver and Macey five different
- 1:05:59quarterbacks. So the fact that that the
- 1:06:03reception or the bones being caught or things like that, and
- 1:06:06that thing is not the biggest part of my evaluation by any
- 1:06:10means my evaluation looking at his footwork, is hands.
- 1:06:13Now when he does catch it, what does he do with the ball as he
- 1:06:16running down the field, like Primetime Deion Sanders with a
- 1:06:19doubt in his hand like this and high-stepping or is he got it
- 1:06:22tucked away to make sure that the safety is not going to knock
- 1:06:24it out of his hands or it's not going to get stripped out you
- 1:06:27know like my man for the Buffalo Bills years.
- 1:06:31To go by. What's his name in the Super
- 1:06:35Bowl Leon Reynolds? Yeah, I'll let ya is he putting
- 1:06:44it away? Is he doing what he's supposed
- 1:06:45to do with it? Is he giving a good first effort
- 1:06:47afterwards when he catches it. Yes, you can evaluate those
- 1:06:50things but I mean if he doesn't catch a ball I'm not killing
- 1:06:55them on that. You held the ball might have
- 1:06:56been six feet over his head because that quarterbacks used
- 1:07:00to throw into a six four wide receivers and just Kiddin sick.
- 1:07:03Or like we told him he was he's only six one part of the
- 1:07:09evaluation is not huge to me, would you?
- 1:07:14I'm sure when we get to the next part of this thing where we talk
- 1:07:18about the quarterbacks, I'll have a little more to say about
- 1:07:20that as well. The let's go to 2nd half and
- 1:07:27obviously you know so y'all know if you wondered where this man's
- 1:07:32credentials are, Our Robbie coach Cornell Powell who was
- 1:07:36done at Clemson. So before we jump to DVDs on ask
- 1:07:39one question, you take Cornell to his first camp like this.
- 1:07:43What was his first thought because Cornell again got highly
- 1:07:46rated goes to Clemson wins. A national title gets.
- 1:07:49Drafted essentially to the best offense in the NFL where he
- 1:07:53probably going to be exceptionally well with cheap.
- 1:07:56But what was his? What was his mentality going in
- 1:07:59there? The first time compared to when
- 1:08:02you guys were going to those Junior days when he was on
- 1:08:05everybody's radar Cornell. just, Look, I love to kid to death and
- 1:08:16and whatever you do, you're a draft party had this.
- 1:08:22He had this or about himself and it was well deserved because he
- 1:08:27was nine times out of ten when he stepped on the field, it
- 1:08:31didn't matter who else on the field he was best athlete out
- 1:08:33there. Plain and simple.
- 1:08:36And Cornell probably a little different than, you know, it's
- 1:08:41hard to compare him to contagious because contagious
- 1:08:44was a defensive lineman and things like that.
- 1:08:48But when it comes to the situation and the camps and
- 1:08:51things of that nature, it was a much different story with
- 1:08:53Cornell and it was contagious. We got Kentavious in there.
- 1:08:56We started getting him to camps and it was kind of reintroducing
- 1:09:00him. Yep.
- 1:09:01He's, we're just finally finding out about it.
- 1:09:04Okay, when we got caught, Janelle to those camps between
- 1:09:08his his sophomore and junior year.
- 1:09:10So the junior camps where he's really being recruited,
- 1:09:13everybody knew who he was, the reason they knew who it was is
- 1:09:18because he was showing up showing out and showing off
- 1:09:21every game that they came to watch contagious.
- 1:09:25They knew who Cornell power was then, got you?
- 1:09:29I mean that that kind of helped boost some things Cornell will I
- 1:09:33if I remember correctly Cornell got his very first offer from
- 1:09:37Ole Miss. on the night of the third round.
- 1:09:47So the day after Thanksgiving, the third round playoff game
- 1:09:51against our biggest rival. DH Conley in 2013.
- 1:09:55Well the week before that we had played at Cape Fear.
- 1:10:05And Cornell, there was a, the defensive coordinator for LSU
- 1:10:11was, there was actually changed. Then defensive line coach, which
- 1:10:21was Lane kiffin is younger. Brother for Ole Miss.
- 1:10:26Both of them were watching contagious.
- 1:10:29And I mean, of course, content can take.
- 1:10:32This was a senior. Yeah.
- 1:10:34Made this commitment. He was, I mean, he was very much
- 1:10:38being recruited. and, Cornell goes out in the first game
- 1:10:44scores three touchdowns. He's by far the player to game.
- 1:10:48The it was not Cape Fear. It was I can't remember Troy.
- 1:10:58What's his name seen? The I can tell you this, it was
- 1:11:02the team that we played had to Future College all Americans on
- 1:11:10the team. They had a kid named Gilyard to
- 1:11:13played center for three years for the University of Georgia.
- 1:11:16He was a defensive lineman for them and then what was the other
- 1:11:22kids name? He's an outside linebacker.
- 1:11:25Now for the Titans and he played at Boston College.
- 1:11:34Anyway, both of those guys on the team, we played them.
- 1:11:40And you know we were in the 11 seed in the playoffs they were
- 1:11:45number three, this time for sound.
- 1:11:48It Pine Forest. That's not terrible.
- 1:11:50Injury Harold, Landry. That's it Harold Landry.
- 1:11:54The Gilyard Gilyard played defensive lineman for he was a
- 1:11:57monster. We told her off, we told her
- 1:12:00offensive coordinator from the start, you ain't running nothing
- 1:12:02inside it's a late in the third quarter track to a guy and that
- 1:12:09cat 80 like Pac-Man and I talked, I told I told her head
- 1:12:17coach the towers. I little, we got, we're gonna
- 1:12:19have to put the ball in the air. I was like, we don't get, we
- 1:12:23will get the third down. We're going to throw it to
- 1:12:24Cornell. He'll score on the third, play
- 1:12:26the game. But you know, we got to put the
- 1:12:29ball in the air. We got to make these kids run
- 1:12:31side to side. Third played a game Cornell
- 1:12:34scores of 47 yard touchdown because I knew what was about to
- 1:12:37happen. We do hold on the field at all
- 1:12:49times. So when that offense goes out
- 1:12:53there, he's got to take over, not only does he know, he's the
- 1:12:56best player on the field in his mind that they've got two or
- 1:13:01three D bees, that are fairly highly recruited.
- 1:13:04And he says, if I go out and I show what I can do against these
- 1:13:08guys to these coaches sitting here, that it's going to put me
- 1:13:13on the map. When I go to camps, they're
- 1:13:16going to know who I am beforehand.
- 1:13:17Yep. And that's what he did.
- 1:13:19He went out there and did it. Why do you say that again?
- 1:13:22You know, of course Pine Forest. Coach comes across and tells us,
- 1:13:25you know, y'all ain't got but one y'all ain't got but one
- 1:13:29All-American on that team and that's number three.
- 1:13:31That's the wide receiver because your defense then didn't do
- 1:13:34nothing against us. Well, they ran 64 please and 57
- 1:13:40of them were opposite. Of can take you the truth.
- 1:13:45I wouldn't run it. Was probably the best football
- 1:13:55player that I've ever coached. He went to Campbell University
- 1:14:00played fullback and then defensive end.
- 1:14:03So I mean, but we know about can take your street going to help
- 1:14:07out but Christian Pleasant. It was one of the best football
- 1:14:11players I've ever coached, but he was under sized.
- 1:14:14Yeah, and that goes to the camp thing with the size and things
- 1:14:18of that nature. He was absolutely incredible,
- 1:14:21and he shut the game down and made it look that way.
- 1:14:24Anyway, the very weary internet game, And Coach Chavis and Coach
- 1:14:31kit for understanding there. And they told Cornell, you know,
- 1:14:34that's an amazing game. You know, we're going to, we're
- 1:14:37going to take your information down.
- 1:14:38Will be watching you, things of that nature because Cornell this
- 1:14:41point use the 10th grader, you just a sophomore.
- 1:14:45So do you know, would you know, make sure you get in touch with
- 1:14:47us, you know, if you to Camp, will get you talking to our
- 1:14:50position coaches things like that.
- 1:14:53Well, Cornell being the kitty is especially at that point he
- 1:14:57goes. You think that was something
- 1:14:59that you guys come to the game next week he goes you thought
- 1:15:02those three wind pressure almost 45 next week.
- 1:15:08Yeah, coach Kevin said I bet you score five next week.
- 1:15:13I will get you that off. Her.
- 1:15:16Let's just say after that next game, the next week coach, Kevin
- 1:15:21was on the phone at that time, when Hugh freeze going, hey,
- 1:15:25where we gotta get this kid offer, he just, he scored eight
- 1:15:28touchdowns and two games. He scored in five against Conley
- 1:15:32and we won that game and moved on.
- 1:15:35So then you put a bar out there, he's gonna jump over.
- 1:15:40Oh absolutely Cornell. Having Kentavious, having
- 1:15:44someone that hydrated? They show up, he shows out, he's
- 1:15:49not coming out of nowhere, he's going after Camp.
- 1:15:53If you don't know nothing here as the stomach he's here is when
- 1:15:59he walks in the door, he's having to do Cornell walks into
- 1:16:08a camp, he's the fifth rate of receiver in the country.
- 1:16:11He's got offers from 30 institutions.
- 1:16:16Would he be things was that if theres chibi's are highly rated?
- 1:16:24They're getting in there getting in line, they're going I want
- 1:16:26Cornell power. I'm going to shut him down.
- 1:16:29Didn't work very often, but that's their mindset.
- 1:16:32Okay. Another part of them that look
- 1:16:34at that line and go. There's Cornell Powell.
- 1:16:37He's one, two, three. One, two, three, four, five.
- 1:16:46Trying to get out of that place. So you got you got prime time
- 1:17:01and you got some people that are thinking a little bit.
- 1:17:03Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 1:17:04Oh yeah. You always do have that one.
- 1:17:07You always behind that one. DB.
- 1:17:08I'm the best DB out here. Put me against anybody and
- 1:17:12everybody scorches that cat because he's never right.
- 1:17:17He, I'm impressed everybody and he slows, you know what, and it
- 1:17:22does not work. But I mean ID please.
- 1:17:28The DVDs, which you got to look at is that you've got to see
- 1:17:32them. Understand?
- 1:17:33Okay. If I know I'm going against the
- 1:17:36Primetime man in this camp. Am I going to step up there now?
- 1:17:42The coach may tell you you're going to press man right here.
- 1:17:45Okay. If I'm going to press man, what
- 1:17:47do I have to do to take advantage of this?
- 1:17:50Is this kid, is this cat going to beat me physically right from
- 1:17:54the play or see a finesse guy that's going to beat me with his
- 1:17:57footwork and get vertical, things of that nature and then
- 1:17:59burn me with his speed you're going to you're going to see
- 1:18:03those guys start to process that and it all goes back to the same
- 1:18:06thing. The hand placement their, their,
- 1:18:08their footwork, And and the way they cover out the way they
- 1:18:14close separation when it's created and things like that.
- 1:18:17That's what you have to evaluate their and that's evaluating
- 1:18:20different ways. Whether it's Pressman or excuse
- 1:18:24me off, man, to Zone type coverage.
- 1:18:28I mean, when you when you get into that off, man, playing
- 1:18:32against that receiver. You instantly create separation.
- 1:18:38So it during that play, Are you able to close that separation?
- 1:18:42When you see that receiver, Make That Swing.
- 1:18:46Are you able to close that separation when he makes a
- 1:18:49double move to the slant, you come down and he goes vertical
- 1:18:53and beat you? Do you have the speed to catch
- 1:18:55up with it? You know, those types of things
- 1:18:58and a lot of that can go into how that DB processes it and how
- 1:19:03that DB You know please everything particular.
- 1:19:07We had a DB a couple years ago. He's a Randolph-Macon now go.
- 1:19:11Sorry, huh. I'm not trying to not trying to
- 1:19:15promote the game, the greatest rivalry in the South whatever,
- 1:19:19but I'm pretty sure you know, that happens every year.
- 1:19:24And I think next year, it's going to be at Hampton Sydney.
- 1:19:26If anybody wants to go out, check it out.
- 1:19:28Should be, I go again, right? I'll be there.
- 1:19:30All right. Now, probably will be to and,
- 1:19:34you know, I'm not above a cheap promotion here if you haven't
- 1:19:36figured that out yet. But anyway, the The kid was was
- 1:19:52under sized but an exceptional DB.
- 1:19:56And one thing I always noticed about and we he with the camps
- 1:20:00was he was going to make sure that he found out who the
- 1:20:04exceptional receivers were in that particular camp and he was
- 1:20:09going to find out what they did best.
- 1:20:12You know, we're there thing where they speed receiver there
- 1:20:16was getting vertical and beating people there.
- 1:20:19Are they somebody took advantage of the separation and did well
- 1:20:22on it on the slant sort of things like that and he would
- 1:20:26play, he would set his self up. If he was given the opportunity,
- 1:20:30he would set his self up to play them the best that he could,
- 1:20:33possibly play to make himself look the best.
- 1:20:35He could, if he had a receipt with that, he knew was was going
- 1:20:39to play vertical and run fast and was faster than you.
- 1:20:43He played softer me, And he knew exactly when to turn, he wasn't
- 1:20:48going to he wasn't going to let the receiver force him.
- 1:20:51He had in his mind, he had said his game plan that he knew what
- 1:20:54he was gonna do and he could do that with watching that receiver
- 1:20:58three please. He knew what he wanted to do and
- 1:21:03that just come from his preparation and rarely did he
- 1:21:08get beat in any of those situations in Camp?
- 1:21:13He could come up and he knew that receiver was gonna maybe
- 1:21:16that receiver was faster than him and everything like that,
- 1:21:19but he knew that the receiver didn't get bitten, get a good
- 1:21:22release off the line. So he'd press it and beat him
- 1:21:25right there and never have to worry about the speed that the
- 1:21:28kid, and that was just what he did and coaches evaluate at that
- 1:21:32and saw that. And they said, okay, yes, he is.
- 1:21:36He is 59 and three quarters but he's got sixty eight and a half.
- 1:21:43Shriek his arms are long and he can tie his shoes standing
- 1:21:46straight up. His arms are so long minions.
- 1:21:49He his body length was freakish. Yeah.
- 1:21:53And he can diagnose, why he with anybody?
- 1:21:56Because of his intellect. But his measurables like his
- 1:22:02height and thing like that they'd go, I don't know.
- 1:22:05They would question it but then they watch him when he feel.
- 1:22:08And that's where that camp comes in.
- 1:22:09Will you can look at these little things of his height and
- 1:22:12go. Yeah, he's not big enough to
- 1:22:13play this type of football, but then when you watch him, play
- 1:22:17you go. Well, he makes up for it in
- 1:22:19other ways. That's where those evaluations
- 1:22:22and things come in because he could clone he could close any
- 1:22:24Gap and he could take away to get from the start if he didn't
- 1:22:28want you to have one. And he had he had makeup speed
- 1:22:34to take away two vertical. If he got beat.
- 1:22:36I mean he was just he was just act like a player and I mean
- 1:22:39it's showing now he started he started six of the seven games
- 1:22:45and making this year as a true freshman.
- 1:22:48Oh wow did he be? So let me ask you this Robbie
- 1:22:51you know we've been going through DB here it looks like DB
- 1:22:54from an evaluation standpoint. It seems to be like you can kind
- 1:22:58of get the most Shin out of that position at these types of
- 1:23:01cancer, that be true. I think you can get the most
- 1:23:04evaluation that these camps from in the wide receiver and
- 1:23:09defensive back, kind of groups because you could you get to see
- 1:23:15that competition more and I mean, let's face it.
- 1:23:19Most of them, they don't like to be hit touched pushed around and
- 1:23:22stuff for start with. So not having pads on really
- 1:23:25doesn't affect them that much. Yeah, it really doesn't.
- 1:23:28I mean, why receiver or DB it's Ness game.
- 1:23:33It gets physical with them when they get to the middle and have
- 1:23:36to deal with that, that strong safety or the free safety of the
- 1:23:38linebackers and things like that.
- 1:23:40But in the one-on-ones that stuff's not there.
- 1:23:43So I mean you really get to evaluate how they position
- 1:23:48themselves, how they do their footwork, how they do, the
- 1:23:50things that they do. And it's, that's probably the
- 1:23:54best time to do it. And those situations now, once
- 1:23:57again, when it comes to the ball coming in, like we talked about
- 1:23:59the Running backs and receivers. I don't put a lot of focus on
- 1:24:04the kept every time simply because it may be coming from a
- 1:24:08different quarterback that they're not used to.
- 1:24:09It may not be the placement, they're not used to and that
- 1:24:13takes time to build. But I mean that's just yeah, I
- 1:24:17would definitely say that that's one of the best places to see
- 1:24:20those. Let's move on to the franchise
- 1:24:23player, the quarterback, how our quarterbacks evaluated these
- 1:24:27camps. And now I'm going to tell you
- 1:24:30what as I told you my, with my coaching experience and all
- 1:24:34those things. Now, I did work with
- 1:24:37quarterbacks at two camps. I think simply because of the
- 1:24:43fact that we took multiple coaches, we had multiple coaches
- 1:24:48at different positions and I would volunteer to go somewhere
- 1:24:50else. I'm the kind of Coach.
- 1:24:52And my mind, I don't have to stay in one place to learn
- 1:24:55something. I can go learn something in any
- 1:24:57position that I can take back with our coach ammonite.
- 1:25:00I can give it to her coach on our staff, that something I may
- 1:25:04have learned. From there, I'll go to any
- 1:25:06place. They are if it's going to help I
- 1:25:08work with quarterbacks a couple times when you go to these
- 1:25:11one-on-ones and the things like that in my opinion.
- 1:25:15And from what I saw those kids, there's very little evaluation
- 1:25:19going with the quarterbacks Nose one-on-ones, when they're
- 1:25:23throwing to the running backs and receivers.
- 1:25:26Simply because again the timings different, the receivers are
- 1:25:32different. They may be running routes that
- 1:25:35that quarterback is not used to you know to throw in things of
- 1:25:39that nature. Now you can see a quarterback
- 1:25:42make amazing throws and good back shoulder throws.
- 1:25:46Perfectly placed deep balls. In some of those situations you
- 1:25:50can see some good things but I don't see where they evaluating
- 1:25:55hold it against a lot of them in those because of those things
- 1:25:59you can tell the exceptional plays but you can't really tell
- 1:26:03how how bad a bad play is absolutely.
- 1:26:06So what's go then what's the weather is when they snap or
- 1:26:16they take that ball and they take their three steps before
- 1:26:19they throw it with. They're evaluating is there.
- 1:26:22Footwork there ball placement, where the both hands on the
- 1:26:25ball, the balls, High secure, things of that nature, but they
- 1:26:29get a lot of that in those individual drills to okay, the
- 1:26:32drills before they get to the 10 once the the only thing they
- 1:26:38they can really see in my opinion in the one-on-ones is
- 1:26:42the is that you know ball placement and their mechanics of
- 1:26:46everything. And now you wait a little bit
- 1:26:49there, but I mean, you're not going to see time and you're not
- 1:26:53going to see them reading a lot, especially with one-on-one.
- 1:26:56Now in the seven on seven things, okay, maybe it's some of
- 1:26:59the seven on seven camps, you can start to see them read pull
- 1:27:03the safety off, things of that nature.
- 1:27:06But what you're going to see in those individual drills with the
- 1:27:09quarterbacks is when they take that three step drop of their
- 1:27:12feet too wide to be able to throw with any power or their
- 1:27:16feet too close together. Either to be able to get power
- 1:27:19onto the ball when they Sprint out or rollout of a square in
- 1:27:24their shoulders, to the line of scrimmage, to throw it back when
- 1:27:29I was playing ball. And when I first started
- 1:27:33coaching, are they sprinting out and throwing it back across
- 1:27:36field? God help them.
- 1:27:37They shouldn't be doing that quarterbacks nowadays, like
- 1:27:41this, what they want them to do. Patrick groans and dog on
- 1:27:45Russell Wilson, roll run. They are the dogon set of
- 1:27:48numbers. I don't know but I mean that's a
- 1:27:52style of play it's coming now. Oh yeah.
- 1:27:54You can you can tell you used to be like breaking every rule if a
- 1:27:58quarterback turned their back to the rush.
- 1:28:00Yeah they'll all be Russell Wilson.
- 1:28:01Does it five six times a game? You won't go out and you pass
- 1:28:04the Hat. You better not be throwing
- 1:28:06plastic. That's just forbidden.
- 1:28:10And now we'll roll it in numbers and throw to the other side
- 1:28:12line. It'll be all right, but would
- 1:28:15they got quarterbacks that have that strength now?
- 1:28:17Yes they do. So we're loose if they got
- 1:28:21bigger arms. Yeah.
- 1:28:22Absolutely. What a backs are going to be
- 1:28:24evaluated more in my mind on that in those individual drills
- 1:28:30and little bitty mechanic things during the one-on-ones, and not
- 1:28:33about their completion percentage.
- 1:28:35And, and, and things of that nature.
- 1:28:38Because I mean, they're just not used to the timing and the
- 1:28:41things of those receivers. It's just, it's hard to do.
- 1:28:44I mean, it's really from the food.
- 1:28:46And if you get up, Get a mechanic issue where that that
- 1:28:49throwing motion is way too slow or way too long you might have
- 1:28:53some. Yeah, that's when that's, when
- 1:28:56that slant turns into the post because we got away from here
- 1:29:02and drop all the way down and come over the top row and here
- 1:29:05passing through. I mean it makes a world of
- 1:29:08difference in the timing and things of that nature.
- 1:29:11So I'm just going to guess on this and then we'll move on but
- 1:29:15I'm guessing with the quarterbacks it's going to be
- 1:29:17the actual film where they're playing week to week and is what
- 1:29:22I see in Camp. Here he is good footwork, good
- 1:29:25placement. Good arm motion.
- 1:29:28Is he doing that? When there's six guys in front
- 1:29:30of him about to kill him? Absolutely.
- 1:29:32Well, if he's taking the here to here, then we now we cooking.
- 1:29:36Yeah. What comes down to is it's a
- 1:29:40camp. You have to be able to take what
- 1:29:43you can get from the camp out of it, and you can expect to come
- 1:29:47into camp with nobody ever. Heard your name and walk out of
- 1:29:52there being the number one prospect on the list because
- 1:29:55they're not going to see everything in a can.
- 1:29:57It's going to be a combination of how you perform at that camp.
- 1:30:00Things that you show the film that you put out the consistent
- 1:30:04numbers and statistics you put up, it's a combination of all
- 1:30:07those things. I mean, It is what it is.
- 1:30:10I mean, the camp is as an opportunity for you to show off
- 1:30:14the things that, you know, you can do well, right then and
- 1:30:16there. But you have to understand that
- 1:30:19some of the things they're not going to see it as camps.
- 1:30:22Just like we have to understand this coaches that there's just
- 1:30:26some things, we all can see it at Camp.
- 1:30:28Okay? There's just some things that
- 1:30:30they're not going to learn how to let me ask this probably You,
- 1:30:35you've been an evaluator there? When are they asking you and
- 1:30:40talking to you about what you're seeing on these individual
- 1:30:42drills are one-on-ones? Is it something that the camp
- 1:30:46server and everybody's getting together?
- 1:30:48You're taking your notes or is it?
- 1:30:50You know? When is it a lot of?
- 1:30:53Like we said before when they come in?
- 1:30:55You know, there's a lot of that registration time period at the
- 1:30:58beginning. Yeah.
- 1:31:00All right you're as they're coming in and they're getting
- 1:31:04stretched. Eh, they're getting warmed up
- 1:31:05there, doing all this, they're working with the strength and
- 1:31:08conditioning staff, things like that, to get warm and and we
- 1:31:11want to sweat, we want them, warm broke in sweating, loose,
- 1:31:17ready to do, everything is when you give your best performance,
- 1:31:21okay? They've got that.
- 1:31:22Say they're going to do Dynamic stretching and mobility and all
- 1:31:27that stuff before they ever do that testing.
- 1:31:29They're going to run, you know, a half mile for they ever get
- 1:31:33that test and started. So, they're going to be nice and
- 1:31:35warm, and ready to go. Well, as they're coming in, you
- 1:31:39know, and in the cases that I remember of working with them,
- 1:31:44the kids are coming in and I'm standing there talking to the
- 1:31:46position coach. Okay, I was say I was at one of
- 1:31:51the camps at NC State. I'm standing there with the
- 1:31:53position coach, and as a kids are coming in, he will tell me.
- 1:31:57Oh, that's you know, so and stuff.
- 1:32:00You know where we're recruiting him.
- 1:32:03He's, you know, he's a three star defensive end from such and
- 1:32:09such high school, we think he's about 63, you know, 245 pounds,
- 1:32:18whatever. If we really want to, make sure
- 1:32:20we take a look at him and then you see him as he checks in, he
- 1:32:23gets his jersey, or is it has compression shirt or whatever?
- 1:32:27It's got a number on it or the banner.
- 1:32:29He's got a number on it but it's got a number written on his arm
- 1:32:32whatever. So you start to look at that
- 1:32:34number and you know and it's highlighted on the on the sheet
- 1:32:38that you may have or whatnot. You know guy that they're
- 1:32:42looking at well, they come in, they do all their tests and they
- 1:32:46do all that stuff and You know, we're talking about that.
- 1:32:52So then after they do all their tests and they do all that to
- 1:32:55get broken into their specific position drills.
- 1:32:58Okay, now I wanted to last campsite work there, that was
- 1:33:05myself the position GA and then to current players, okay?
- 1:33:14And what we did was we had, I don't know 20 2530 defensive
- 1:33:19lineman at the camp. So what we did was we split them
- 1:33:23by groups. Okay.
- 1:33:26So if you're you know you're Rising freshman, you go over
- 1:33:31here with player number one, if you're a rising sophomore, you
- 1:33:36go here with quite a number two, if you're a rising.
- 1:33:43Junior you go right here with you know coach competent.
- 1:33:47If you're a rising senior you go right over here with the ga and
- 1:33:53you know they split them up that way some of them, put them up
- 1:33:56different ways you know you're a defensive end, you go over here,
- 1:33:59you're a defense, your three technique, you go here, you're a
- 1:34:02nose, you go here. This particular one, the the
- 1:34:08defensive line coach went through.
- 1:34:09He gives give me you for guys, you go with that guy.
- 1:34:13You five guys go with player. Number two, I want so-and-so
- 1:34:18so-and-so, so-and-so and so-and-so.
- 1:34:20We have Coach Compton. And this guy, this guy, this
- 1:34:22guy, this guy with the ga. Well when you really looked at
- 1:34:26it they had the younger kids with the players.
- 1:34:30And then they had the kids that they were actively recruiting or
- 1:34:35could be recruiting or things like that with me and the ga
- 1:34:38gotcha because the player, you know why, they know the drills,
- 1:34:45they know the information, they know the things like that, they
- 1:34:48may not be able to see certain things.
- 1:34:52To evaluate the way than myself or TGA may be able to do.
- 1:34:57So, as we're going through the drills, we're seeing things,
- 1:35:00okay? So I'm putting the kids through
- 1:35:01the Thrills and I'm seeing their first step.
- 1:35:03I'm seeing how they're doing this, how they're doing that.
- 1:35:06And, you know, the defensive line coach was standing right
- 1:35:09there may be two head coaches there.
- 1:35:11Maybe they were recruiting coordinator has walked over and
- 1:35:13seeing that, but most of those coaches are moving around at
- 1:35:17that particular time. The defensive line coach should
- 1:35:20have with working with. He was the Important later and
- 1:35:24he was also the Run game coordinator.
- 1:35:28So he was moving around. See, linebackers and DBS.
- 1:35:31And I mean he's moving around to see things too.
- 1:35:33So he takes a lot of information from from us of what we see in
- 1:35:38the evaluation. So we run through say 10 minute,
- 1:35:4210, 15 minutes of drill and we send the kids to go get water
- 1:35:45because it's 110 degrees on the turf.
- 1:35:48Yep. Well he comes over and talks to
- 1:35:49us why those kids are running water.
- 1:35:52Okay, what do you know in this Grill?
- 1:35:54What did you see? How did you feel about this?
- 1:35:57So we'll talk about it a little bit there.
- 1:35:59Okay, well we finish up those individual drills or we get
- 1:36:03ready to go to 101. Okay guys, we finished all of
- 1:36:06our individual drills. What you're going to do, we're
- 1:36:08going to break it down. You're going to go down to the
- 1:36:11left corner of the end zone down there, and that's where we're
- 1:36:14going to do one-on-ones against the o-line.
- 1:36:17So they break down, take off. Then it baby me.
- 1:36:21That GA the It's Ron coach and the head coach and they may have
- 1:36:25questions. And we'll have this kid do in
- 1:36:27this particular thing. How did they do with this?
- 1:36:31How was their first step with this?
- 1:36:33If you took these Five Guys, where would you rank them?
- 1:36:36One through five, who would be the quiet guy down?
- 1:36:40So we talked about that kind of stuff for our particular
- 1:36:43position. Yeah.
- 1:36:44And each position is doing that every time they can get the kids
- 1:36:49together and you get a free minute.
- 1:36:52To evaluate I got you, then you get to the one-on-ones and you
- 1:36:57know, that particular this particular Camp, I was working
- 1:37:01with defensive line and my head coach was working with offensive
- 1:37:04line because that was what his specialty was.
- 1:37:07So now we're at one-on-ones and it's my head coach and the
- 1:37:11offensive line coach. And then the defensive line
- 1:37:14coach and myself, we have a group of one-on-ones and it may
- 1:37:18be there. Seven best offensive lineman and
- 1:37:21there. Best defensive lineman that we
- 1:37:23had evaluated anything. Gotcha.
- 1:37:26And so, you know, it may come over there and the defensive
- 1:37:31line coach may ask me, he goes okay, who's the who's the best?
- 1:37:34Who's the highest value? What you want out of what we've
- 1:37:37seen today? And I say, you know, jersey
- 1:37:40number 12 and they'll ask offensive line, coach.
- 1:37:45And my head coach, who was the top-rated offensive lineman?
- 1:37:50All number 172, okay. Next time around, we want to see
- 1:37:54number 12, go against 172 so you know, we can evaluate things
- 1:37:59that way and when it all comes down to it, okay, after those
- 1:38:02one-on-ones are done, before they get ready, there's going to
- 1:38:06be a period where they may go get you know, they're different
- 1:38:12camps, do different things, you know, you met some of them, you
- 1:38:15can go take pictures, you can go do things like that.
- 1:38:18Ye may have a snack or something.
- 1:38:19For you. But before you leave the head
- 1:38:21coach, or whoever is going to speak or their their guest
- 1:38:25speaker or somebody's going to speak.
- 1:38:27So while they're doing that, all the coaches may be meeting to
- 1:38:31give their evaluation from the one-on-ones.
- 1:38:35He didn't he didn't, he didn't do great in individual drill but
- 1:38:39when you put in our competition against somebody he did awesome.
- 1:38:42He grows up and we showed good footwork and did this and did
- 1:38:45that he didn't do so well against led to destroy it,
- 1:38:48didn't move in front of it. But when things are moving in
- 1:38:51front of him, you really see that Raw Talent breakout, you
- 1:38:54know, things like that. But you get, you get kind of
- 1:38:56evaluate those different ways. Then you get to try to let you
- 1:38:59know, we were talking to different coaches and getting
- 1:39:02them are ideas. And if that in that situation,
- 1:39:05you know, they felt comfortable enough taking information from
- 1:39:09us, that we, you know, that we knew what we were doing.
- 1:39:13But I mean that just depends on that were like you said their
- 1:39:17relationship, you build. I mean, we had five players go
- 1:39:21play at NC State. They knew what we based our
- 1:39:25stuff on and what we were focused on.
- 1:39:27So I got you now could I ask there?
- 1:39:30Yeah. Good Curtis my bad.
- 1:39:32Have you ever had a coach? Is there everything a kid at a
- 1:39:34camp that stood out so much where you had a head coach or
- 1:39:37recruiting coordinator sake, we want to talk to him.
- 1:39:40That's, you know, you have this list of all the kids that
- 1:39:48registered And they're going to, they're going to be given
- 1:39:52numbers and you're given a list of who these kids are.
- 1:39:55So you can check because, you know, you have to record their
- 1:39:59their tests and stuff so it has to be written out in record it.
- 1:40:04So, you have a list of the kids that are there their name and
- 1:40:07what their shirt number or whatever he is now, don't get
- 1:40:10wrong. Some of these kids identify when
- 1:40:12they come in. You, like I said, he's gonna
- 1:40:14say, hey, this kid right here, coming in.
- 1:40:16He's got, we're looking at, he's a guy with a recruiting.
- 1:40:19You know, so he's marked on her sheet whether we checked it off,
- 1:40:23it's highlighted. Whether his jersey is now, is
- 1:40:26red with black numbers, where all the rest of them are red
- 1:40:29with white numbers or, you know, however, they they do it to make
- 1:40:33certain individual stand out. You're going to know who they
- 1:40:36are, there may be a kid, it come in cold off, the street signed
- 1:40:40up and he looks good. And that's one of the cases with
- 1:40:45like was contagious, was he come in before his junior year?
- 1:40:49Yeah and he's in the area that hadn't been heavily recruiting
- 1:40:52him because he had just moved there all of a sudden he sets a
- 1:40:56he set the camp on fire they're like hey Mark that get him out
- 1:41:00of that group, bring him over to this group and and you to
- 1:41:05evaluate him. Where he was over there.
- 1:41:09You know player a said that he was dominating everything over
- 1:41:13there and he was amazing that we need to be looking at.
- 1:41:16So we bring them over to one of those groups to where we can
- 1:41:19evaluate him and some of the other coaches get to see him as
- 1:41:22well. Get to see him again.
- 1:41:23Small receive High Caliber guys that you already do something
- 1:41:26about see how he does against them.
- 1:41:28He coaches may not some of the coaches may not look so much at
- 1:41:32the rising 9th graders at the camp because they really, you
- 1:41:37know, they can talk to him but they can actively recruit them
- 1:41:41into ninth grade, you know. But you know you got this kid,
- 1:41:45there's a rising Junior. He's in the primer.
- 1:41:47Recruiting we need to get on board and find out where this
- 1:41:50kit fits we can pull him in. There we go.
- 1:41:53Let's get him with this group. So yeah, that definitely
- 1:41:55happens. It's not, you know, I wouldn't
- 1:42:00say it's every Camp. If you go out and you get a kid
- 1:42:03that that blows up and it appears out of nowhere, but it's
- 1:42:06definitely possible. And there's the one to come in
- 1:42:09and be like this is a key of looking at and by the end of the
- 1:42:13camp they're just like nope we're racing guys.
- 1:42:18This is there a kid that coaches don't really know from Adam
- 1:42:22that's walking in. It's going to walk away with a
- 1:42:24scholarship from these cans. I seriously, doubt it.
- 1:42:28Okay. Now times out of ten, they're
- 1:42:31walking into the camp if they leave, what a scholarship offer,
- 1:42:36somebody new a lot. About them before they got
- 1:42:38there, got you. They're one of the lifts their
- 1:42:41one of the guy they're all there on the list when they arrive.
- 1:42:44If they're if you don't have a scholarship when they're there
- 1:42:46and they walk away with absolutely got you.
- 1:42:48Now, you can, you can, you can be one of those borderline kids.
- 1:42:51Yeah, we know who you are. You know, we were like, what you
- 1:42:55we seen your film? We know that you can play.
- 1:42:59We're trying to sign and come out and blow that thing out of
- 1:43:01the water and account and go, hey.
- 1:43:04Yeah, he's worth it. Okay, I mean that can happen but
- 1:43:08somebody that walks in stone, cold off the street and just
- 1:43:11appears, I mean, there's no, I haven't seen it a camp, a Rudy
- 1:43:16story where God just appears out of nowhere, blows it up and you
- 1:43:21know, gets a scholarship and then mosa field afterwards, you
- 1:43:25know, I haven't seen that. I mean I guess it's possible but
- 1:43:30so you but you by giving you might go to a camp and get all
- 1:43:33the teams radar. You're not going to came over
- 1:43:35said, you got a scholarship got. Yeah and you can go in there and
- 1:43:39open some eyes and say, hey we're going to start watching
- 1:43:41this cat. Not impossible but improbable
- 1:43:44problem as yeah, not impossible but improbable that's a great
- 1:43:48way to put it. Here we go.
- 1:43:49Curtis a man of words right there, Wordsmith exactly.
- 1:43:54All right, so before we jump off here tonight Robbie, we're going
- 1:43:58to give the floor to you because for anybody listening out there
- 1:44:02whether you are a high school kid, whether you are a parent Me
- 1:44:07and Brian are parents. So you know, obviously we've got
- 1:44:10a ways to go before any of this stuff takes place before.
- 1:44:13Maybe some of you guys who have kids getting older, why we
- 1:44:17wanted to give a little info. So you guys kind of know how to
- 1:44:22go into these things and Robbie. I'm assuming this isn't just
- 1:44:25football but this is for any score, right?
- 1:44:27Yeah. My biggest thing and it's like I
- 1:44:30said earlier, when it comes to the kids and these coaches and
- 1:44:34all the stuff I want to be honest about things, Because
- 1:44:38it's you know it's my word, it's my evaluation of things of these
- 1:44:45kids and stuff that they're going to take you know and we
- 1:44:48build relationships off of those things we want.
- 1:44:52If I could go in, I do I give every one of my kids on my team
- 1:44:56scholarship because I want them to go to college.
- 1:44:59I want them to be successful. I want them to be you know,
- 1:45:03great citizens and productive citizens everywhere.
- 1:45:06That's what I want for it. For every kid that has ever
- 1:45:08played for me for every kid that thought about playing the didn't
- 1:45:11play, you know, that as an educator as a teacher as a
- 1:45:14coach, that's what I want. I want every kid to have that
- 1:45:17chance to succeed. They don't allow me to give
- 1:45:20scholarships. So I have to put my, I have to
- 1:45:25use the relationships that I build and put my stamp on the
- 1:45:28kids that I know that I can help.
- 1:45:31And I tell them with honesty, you know, go to these camps, get
- 1:45:39the exposure, you can get, if you have 250 dollars this year
- 1:45:46to spend to go to camps, Okay. My first piece of advice would
- 1:45:51be, don't spend all 250 dollars at Every ACC and SEC camera or
- 1:46:01every Big Ten, Big 12, Camp, whatever, don't don't blow every
- 1:46:06dime you have on power 5. You know, camps.
- 1:46:12And the reason I say that is I mean statistically you look at
- 1:46:18it, there's five conferences, there's ten, eleven twelve teams
- 1:46:23in the conference, each team has 85 scholarships.
- 1:46:27Okay, I'm not a mathematician but that that chance is Slim.
- 1:46:37Okay. and there's 1,400. I know in North Carolina,
- 1:46:45there's like 317 high school football teams total, okay, each
- 1:46:51one of those teams have anywhere from 40 to 70 80 kids on the
- 1:46:56team. It's 317 in one state that plays
- 1:47:01football. And that's you know, ten
- 1:47:06conferences, maybe 115, 120 teams in all the power 5 that
- 1:47:11have 85 kids. So all of you can't go there as
- 1:47:16much as you want to go to Alabama.
- 1:47:18You may not be able to So think about your education first okay?
- 1:47:25The things that you want out of like football is not going to
- 1:47:28last forever. I tell the kids all kind of
- 1:47:30football is not going to last forever.
- 1:47:32I've coached for 15 years say average of 50 kids per year. 15
- 1:47:36years. Y'all.
- 1:47:38And y'all are the numbers guys. Y'all can figure out that kind
- 1:47:41of math. I've coached well over 2,000
- 1:47:44kids in my 15 years of coaching. Two of them right now.
- 1:47:50In NFL. To every all 2,000 of them, at
- 1:47:55one point in their life, their goal was probably the play
- 1:47:58professional football play in the NFL, two of them are there.
- 1:48:03So you got to find something else to finish life with you got
- 1:48:07to find something, to be that that you you're going to go
- 1:48:11professional. But what's it going to be in the
- 1:48:14likelihood of it? Being football is not it.
- 1:48:16Find what you want to do, okay? Find the schools that are best
- 1:48:19at that. You want to play football, find
- 1:48:22the schools that have the football programs that you want
- 1:48:24to play for. Okay.
- 1:48:26Pick pick one of the big school, pick at dream school.
- 1:48:29If your dream school is Alabama, if your dream school is 4G, He
- 1:48:33attacked go to the camp. Get that exposure.
- 1:48:37Go enjoy every bit of it. Then find a say you're of
- 1:48:42Virginia kid find a j mu. Then find a, you know, a
- 1:48:49division 2 School of Virginia state.
- 1:48:53Then find a couple of D3 schools, you know, things like
- 1:48:58that. Make sure you very where you
- 1:49:01spend your time at those camps. Like I said, a lot of those
- 1:49:04campers you go to, you're going to find coaches from other
- 1:49:07schools there. Anyway, especially the bigger
- 1:49:09ones. So, use those processes and help
- 1:49:14yourself get your exposure that way.
- 1:49:16Don't spend every dime. You have traveling all over the
- 1:49:20world to traveling all over the United States to these big
- 1:49:24schools, that the that you have less than 2% chance of going
- 1:49:28through. That that would be my biggest
- 1:49:30thing to tell them and again, look around at the talent that's
- 1:49:36there and see where you fit in. I mean, I had a, I've worked for
- 1:49:42the last eleven twelve years for a phenomenal coach and he played
- 1:49:52college. He had Pro workouts.
- 1:49:55Okay, he played a division to college in West Virginia, okay?
- 1:50:00His dream was to go to to Penn State He went to camp at Penn
- 1:50:04State and he said I knew 30 minutes after registration by
- 1:50:09looking at the guys who were around me.
- 1:50:11I was not going to print statement.
- 1:50:15He said I was 64 300 pounds and I was one of the smallest
- 1:50:19lineman there he said I knew then I wasn't going to Penn
- 1:50:23State But I was going to play football and, and that's what he
- 1:50:29did. He worked his way around and,
- 1:50:31you know, he ended up to start with a small school.
- 1:50:35I think in Pennsylvania, called till college, and then he
- 1:50:39transferred to Glenville State. So, I mean, in even a Glenville
- 1:50:44State, he ended up with workout with Pro workouts.
- 1:50:48It didn't work out. He wasn't quite, you know, he
- 1:50:50didn't quite measure up in those situations, but that's okay.
- 1:50:53I mean, he What is education? He's coaching and teaching.
- 1:50:58He's caught, he's coached at the college level taught at the
- 1:51:02college level now. He's teaching and coaching the
- 1:51:04high school and he's been very successful so, and that's what
- 1:51:08he wanted to do outside of football, he still wanted to be
- 1:51:11involved in it so that those are the things that I would put out
- 1:51:15there. And I would tell the kids to
- 1:51:19very those things to make sure you do those.
- 1:51:22Don't limit yourself. Just to the big schools because
- 1:51:27it's not going to work out as much for the parents.
- 1:51:32The biggest thing I would say is as support the kids, don't push
- 1:51:38them towards something that you see for them that they may not
- 1:51:44see for themselves. I understand, you know, pushing
- 1:51:47them to get to that but don't push them to something that you
- 1:51:52would want to see, rather than what's realistic.
- 1:51:56That's a good thing. You see?
- 1:51:57A lot of you lot of parents that push things because it's what
- 1:52:01they want and it may not be what the kids want.
- 1:52:04And that's the biggest thing. It's going to come out to be a
- 1:52:06lot easier when the kid wants to be there and wants to do it,
- 1:52:09that it is just because they were told to But that's the
- 1:52:14biggest thing in it. I think the camps are great like
- 1:52:18you said possible but not probable.
- 1:52:21When it comes into walking into one, nine times out of ten, the
- 1:52:26kids are going into camp now at the end of these camps that
- 1:52:31you're going to, you're going to see some kids that at the end of
- 1:52:35Camp, the guest speaker spoken. Now, all of a sudden you're
- 1:52:39going to see these coaches, start talking to individual
- 1:52:42kids. And then there, I've seen them
- 1:52:45at the end of those camps. Like you said, after June 1st at
- 1:52:48recruiting thing is up and they can start recruiting again.
- 1:52:52I've seen kids come to these camps.
- 1:52:54And at the end of that count, you know, they're walking away
- 1:52:57with the head coach and recruiting coordinator, and then
- 1:53:00they reappear wear with a scholarship offer, okay?
- 1:53:05That wasn't a kid that walked in from my experience and that's
- 1:53:31so-and-so from, you know, Blacksburg High School.
- 1:53:35He's a four-star defensive. Recruit a 64 265 pounds.
- 1:53:43Runs a 464 they know everything about him already.
- 1:53:47That's usually the kid that's that's wandering off and sitting
- 1:53:50in an office somewhere to talk to the head coach a little bit
- 1:53:53later. That's meet a couple camps when
- 1:53:56I was going to them when I was a junior and I was that regular
- 1:54:01guy, then Marcus Vick was the guy that was getting pulled to
- 1:54:03the side and talking to the coaches?
- 1:54:06Yeah, absolutely. I mean, it possible, not
- 1:54:08probable, there we go. Told you, they never, they all
- 1:54:11want to come to the table as a probable.
- 1:54:14Every once in a while, there's a possible, the rest of them, if
- 1:54:18they're talking to head coach afterwards, it's probably to
- 1:54:20take the picture, get an autograph.
- 1:54:23But there we needs, it's just realistic.
- 1:54:26I guess. I have more tell the truth, and
- 1:54:28that's what the truth is. But I mean that's that's the big
- 1:54:32thing about the camps. It's an opportunity an
- 1:54:36opportunity to show what you what you can do.
- 1:54:39But Yeah, have realistic expectations when it comes down
- 1:54:44to it. There we go.
- 1:54:50Robbie, we appreciate you joining us tonight, man.
- 1:54:53It's been way too long. A since we've seen you, thanks
- 1:54:57through covid. Unfortunately, because normally
- 1:54:59Robbie would swing by Richmond and we somehow catch, Prayin you
- 1:55:04catch me. We all catch up.
- 1:55:05Go to her least have some wings, hopefully in the next few
- 1:55:09months. We do this in person.
- 1:55:11Maybe we get to watch a game together.
- 1:55:13Don't know if we want to do that.
- 1:55:14That might be dangerous. Have some wine.
- 1:55:17Watch a little football, hell yeah.
- 1:55:20I told you the other day, it's time to get together, you know,
- 1:55:23I got kids, I've had, I've had for years, I've had kids of
- 1:55:27different places playing ball and things like that.
- 1:55:30I've been running from place to place to watch games and things
- 1:55:32like that. And I spent a lot of time at at
- 1:55:36NC State. I spent some time at Clemson.
- 1:55:41So now I think this year there's going to be a lot less
- 1:55:45traveling. I can I can get back to my roots
- 1:55:47and watch some more Virginia Tech football.
- 1:55:50Yes sir. But like I said, I got another
- 1:55:53kid to just committed to NC State this past weekend so I can
- 1:55:57head back to Raleigh and I know I know some of the Virginia Tech
- 1:56:02fans don't want to hear it but I got I got some connections and
- 1:56:08in Raleigh that I can get the games if I need to call Coach y,
- 1:56:11Of you know because once again I have a pretty decent
- 1:56:18relationship there so he's a good dude.
- 1:56:23I know he did an amazing job in Blacksburg and he did the glad
- 1:56:27to have him in Raleigh as well. So we'll we'll spend some time
- 1:56:32in Raleigh again. We'll see how everything goes.
- 1:56:35There we go. Definitely get together, watch a
- 1:56:37little wash, a little hokey football.
- 1:56:39Y'all have to catch me up on how things are going.
