Transcript
- 0:00What happens when you pray and God doesn't fix it, Not
- 0:05immediately and not the way you hoped or not the way you
- 0:08expected? What happens when the marriage
- 0:11doesn't heal? When grief stays?
- 0:15When the anxiety doesn't disappear?
- 0:19When the diagnosis remains? When the addiction battle takes
- 0:24longer than you thought, when the prayer becomes weeks, then
- 0:31months, then years, I think this is one of the hardest
- 0:35conversations in faith because we love stories where God shows
- 0:40up dramatically, the breakthrough, the miracle, the
- 0:44restoration. And those stories matter.
- 0:48But what about the stories where the healing takes longer?
- 0:52What about the seasons where God feels quiet?
- 0:56What about when the thing that you begged him to remove stays?
- 1:01What do you do then? Because I think there are people
- 1:05listening right now, and that's exactly where they are.
- 1:10They're still faithful, still praying, still showing up, and
- 1:16yet quietly wondering, God, why haven't you fixed this tonight,
- 1:24Today, wherever you are listening, I want to sit there
- 1:28for a little while. Welcome to Unmast, where we take
- 1:35off the filters and get real about faith, failure, and
- 1:39finding freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:41Farnsworth, a dad, veteran, author, and a man who's learned
- 1:45that God does His best work in the middle of our mess.
- 1:49Each episode we have honest conversations with people who
- 1:51have walked through addiction, pain, doubt, loss, and
- 1:55redemption, and with pastors, leaders, and everyday believers
- 2:00who are learning what it means to live authentically and follow
- 2:04God through real life. If these conversations encourage
- 2:09you, challenge you, or help you feel less alone, then make sure
- 2:13you subscribe, follow, and share the podcast with somebody else.
- 2:17That simple step really helps Unmasked reach more people who
- 2:21need hope. Now take a breath, pull up a
- 2:24chair, and let's get real. This is unmasked.
- 2:33I think there's a lot of us that grow up with an unspoken
- 2:36expectation. If we trust God, things should
- 2:40get better. Not perfect, but better.
- 2:44We don't always say it out loud, but it's there.
- 2:48If I pray enough, God will fix it.
- 2:51If I stay faithful, God will remove it.
- 2:54If I obey, God will resolve it. And then life happens, and
- 2:59suddenly you find yourself praying prayers that don't get
- 3:02immediate answers. You find yourself carrying
- 3:05things longer than expected, and the faith that felt simple
- 3:10starts becoming complicated. I think one of the loneliest
- 3:15experiences in faith is watching God answer somebody else's
- 3:20prayer while yours still feels unanswered.
- 3:24You hear testimonies and breakthrough stories, healing
- 3:27stories, restoration stories, and you're really happy for
- 3:32them. You really are.
- 3:35But quietly you're wondering, what about mine?
- 3:38That's a hard place to be in because now you're not only
- 3:41carrying pain, but you're carrying confusion.
- 3:44I think a lot of people, a lot of believers have questions that
- 3:48they don't say out loud because they're afraid that it sounds
- 3:51unspiritual. Questions like, did I do
- 3:55something wrong? Did I miss God?
- 3:58Am I not praying enough? Does he hear me?
- 4:02Does he care? And if you have ever been there,
- 4:07I want to say something very clearly.
- 4:10Questions are not failure. In fact, questions are human.
- 4:15Faith has always contained questions.
- 4:18The Psalms are full of them. David asks them.
- 4:22Job asked them. Even Jesus cried out from the
- 4:26suffering. God is not intimidated by honest
- 4:30wrestling. Paul talks about a thorn in the
- 4:32flesh. 3 times he asked God to remove it.
- 4:36Three times God didn't do it. Instead, God answered
- 4:41differently. God said, My grace is sufficient
- 4:45for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
- 4:48I don't know about you, but that answer feels uncomfortable
- 4:51sometimes. Because if we're honest, we want
- 4:55removal, we want that thorn removed.
- 4:57God sometimes offers presents, and we want rescue.
- 5:02God offers endurance, but we want change.
- 5:04Sometimes God offers himself. And those are not always the
- 5:08same thing. And there's a part of faith that
- 5:09we don't celebrate. See, we celebrate deliverance,
- 5:12but we don't always celebrate endurance.
- 5:14But Scripture does, over and over.
- 5:18People walking through wilderness, waiting, grieving,
- 5:23trusting. Not because everything got fixed
- 5:26quickly, but because God stayed. I think modern faith sometimes
- 5:32accidentally teaches people that God's goodness equals immediate
- 5:36outcomes. Scripture paints something
- 5:39deeper. Sometimes God's goodness looks
- 5:43like sustaining, not removing. I think the prolonged pain
- 5:47creates a unique temptation. Not just current discouragement.
- 5:53Not just discouragement, but abandonment.
- 5:57You start wondering, maybe God moved on, maybe he forgot, maybe
- 6:04I'm alone in this. And that's where things start to
- 6:06get dangerous. Because now suffering is not
- 6:09only emotional, it becomes relational.
- 6:13You don't just hurt, you feel unseen.
- 6:17And honestly, I think a lot of people carrying long term pain
- 6:21secretly feel abandoned by God, even if they'll never say it.
- 6:25So I want to ask something to you very, very gently.
- 6:27What if God isn't absent? What if he's working differently
- 6:31than you expected him to? Because sometimes we assume that
- 6:34God's activity equals resolution.
- 6:38But maybe sometimes his work is formation, sometimes it's
- 6:42refinement or transformation. Not because suffering is good,
- 6:48and not because pain is desirable, but because.
- 6:51But because God refuses to waste it.
- 6:55And that's different. See, long seasons tend to reveal
- 6:59things. Identity, fear, control,
- 7:04expectations. They reveal where our hope
- 7:08actually lives. Because when one thing doesn't
- 7:12change, you discover what your faith is attached to.
- 7:16And that's hard. Really hard because sometimes we
- 7:21realize that we trusted God for outcomes more than we trusted
- 7:25God himself. Let that sit for a second.
- 7:27I think many people start praying God remove this and
- 7:31eventually after enough time, the prayer becomes God, meet me
- 7:36in this. That shift is painful, but it's
- 7:38holy because now the relationship becomes deeper than
- 7:42the outcome. Not because the pain
- 7:45disappeared, but because God stayed.
- 7:47See, Jesus understands unresolved pain.
- 7:51He understands waiting. He understands grief, loss,
- 7:58betrayal, suffering. He wept, He eliminated, He
- 8:05eliminated. He carried sorrow.
- 8:08He wept, He lamented, He carried sorrow.
- 8:14He wept, He lamented, he carried sorrow.
- 8:19And that matters because faith is not following a distant God
- 8:24untouched by suffering, it's following a Saviour who entered
- 8:28it. Sometimes the miracle is
- 8:30healing, sometimes it's survival.
- 8:34Sometimes it's peace. Sometimes it's not losing faith.
- 8:40Sometimes the miracle is you're still here, you're still
- 8:45praying, you're still standing, still trusting, and that matters
- 8:50more than you realize. I think some people listening
- 8:54feel disappointed with God. And honestly, I think you're
- 8:57allowed to say that. It's not disrespectful, it's
- 9:02honest because disappointment brought into the light can heal.
- 9:07Hidden disappointment becomes distance, and God already knows,
- 9:11so tell him anyway. One thing that I keep coming
- 9:13back to is this. God's present doesn't disappear
- 9:17because circumstances don't change.
- 9:20He is not absent because healing takes time.
- 9:24He is not gone because answers are delayed.
- 9:28He is not less good because a life stayed hard.
- 9:32That doesn't make pain easier, but it changes loneliness.
- 9:36Faith sometimes looks dramatic, sometimes it looks like
- 9:40miracles, sometimes it looks like crossing the Red Sea, and
- 9:45sometimes faith looks like getting up again tomorrow,
- 9:48praying again, trusting again, walking again.
- 9:53Not because everything got fixed, but because God was still
- 9:57there. I experienced this last year in
- 10:012025 when I found myself on the unemployment line for 9 months
- 10:08and I prayed at time after time again.
- 10:10God give me a job and jobs would appear and I would pray.
- 10:14God I believe this is the right one.
- 10:15Please give it to me if it be your will.
- 10:18And time and time again the door closed and I sat with confusion
- 10:23and I told God this and eventually I just went along for
- 10:26the ride. And as a God you, you can
- 10:29provide and you will. And he did, and he used that
- 10:34season of nine months for transformation slowly over time.
- 10:40And now I'm in a season of life that I never thought I would be
- 10:45in. The answer I wanted wasn't yes
- 10:47when I wanted it. Sometimes it was no.
- 10:51But God was always there. I didn't always have everything
- 10:53fixed, but God was still there. So here's your action step this
- 10:57week. I want you to ask yourself this
- 11:00honestly, what thing am I disappointed that God hasn't
- 11:04fixed? And I want you to name it.
- 11:07Don't spiritualize it and don't minimize it.
- 11:10Just name it and then bring that disappointment before God.
- 11:16Not polished or edited. Just be honest because
- 11:21relationship often deepens where honesty finally begins.
- 11:26Thanks for joining me today on Unmasked.
