- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Welcome in to the replay room.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: I am Sean Boyle, and we have a bit of a different episode today.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: It is a solo episode.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: It's the first of its kind.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: It is potentially the last of its kind.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: We're going to see how it goes.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty uncomfortable hitting that record button, not having one of my friends next to me.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: So we're giving it a shot.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: It's going to be short form.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: I'm really going to try my best not to hold you hostage.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I promise, despite having three podcasts, I really don't enjoy hearing myself talk.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I never listened back to any of the episodes, and I have a hard time even going back to edit myself.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: So we're going to let it rip raw.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: I'm hoping to do it all in one take.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: You're going to get my thoughts as they come to me.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I've prepared a list for you guys, as you can tell from the episode title.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: It is the top 10 fall albums of all time.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: This is according to me.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: It's kind of a mix between my favorites and what I consider the best.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: The list is, of course, subjective.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to force feed it to you and say this is the ultimate list, no other list matters.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: That could be the case, because believe me, I have elite taste, but this list is just my opinion.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I am going to go from 10 to 1.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: I'm going to work my way down.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I'm going to give you a couple quick thoughts about why I like each album.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: And then we're going to be on our way.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: We're going to be on our merry way.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to take up too much of your time.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: I hope this list can serve as a bonding point if you guys agree with a lot of the albums.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Maybe it introduces you to a couple of new artists or albums that you haven't heard before.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Or maybe it's a list you just can't stand.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And you can leave me a nasty comment, and that's totally within your right.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: So if you aren't someone who associates music with different times of your life or different moods, and in this case, different seasons of the year, you might not get what I'm going for here.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And that's totally fair as well.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Basically, I get really into seasonal listening, and I think certain songs or artists fit certain times of the year perfectly.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Fall is my favorite time of the year.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: I think it's the best time of the year.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And since we're in the middle of it, I thought this list would be a fun little activity, a side quest, if for nothing else, just so I have a clear ranking of where I stand on my favorite fall records.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Let's dive in.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I'm going to try to make this as quick and painless as possible.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: We're going to work away from 10 to 1 and then do some honorable mentions and be on our way.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Coming in at number 10, starting the list off, Rubber Soul by the Beatles.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: The Beatles.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: What sort of man would I be if I did my first ever solo ranking and didn't include the work of John, Paul, George, and Ringo?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: The album artwork, I that's going to be a common theme as well.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: If you have an album artwork that represents fall or gets you in the mood just visually, you're going to get an extra point in my book.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: And I think Rubber Soul has a little bit of a fall feel to it, that orange font.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: This one is not my favorite Beatles album by any means, but I think it's my favorite for this time of year.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I love a few of these tracks.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Norwegian Wood, one of my favorite Beatles songs.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: I think that's incredible.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I also love the song The Word.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: I think What Goes On is Great.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: And of course, we get the classic on here in my life.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: A really good record.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: It's also just a really short record.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: The Beatles love a short song.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: They pack 14 songs into 35 minutes.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: It's enjoyable.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: And it's a nod to the all-time greats to start the list.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: I think I would be a little bit disingenuous if I didn't include the Beatles anywhere on this list.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: They're not necessarily the band that comes to mind the most for fall, but Rubber's Soul does the trick for me this time of year.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: We'll move right along to number nine.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: We're going in a completely different direction here.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Number nine is Charm by Clairo.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: I love Clairo.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I really do.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know how popular she is.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: I don't really know if any of my friends listen to her, now that I think of it, but she's super, super easy to get into.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: She's really not offensive.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I don't think anybody can report back and say, oh God, that was horrible.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: If anything, you could say, yeah, it's not for me, but she's certainly not offensive in any way.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And her music to me is just very comfortable.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: It's cozy.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: This album has that comfortable feel to it.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: I feel like it plays well when you're wearing a sweater.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: And if you know me, I'm a big sweater weather playlist guy.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Claro features on that mix every single year.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Nomad is the opener to the album, and that's just great at laying the table.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: We say a good opening track should set the table for what's in store.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Nomad does just that.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Then we go into sexy to someone.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Sexy to someone.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: If you don't know this song, this song is unbelievable.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: I don't know how much of a fall vibe Sexy to Someone gives off, but I'll tell you this.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Every time it comes on, I'm shimmying in my chair just a little bit.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Olivia Dean does a cover of this, and that even might take it to a new level.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: So Sexy to Someone's great.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I also love Slow Dance and Juna.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: I just think Claire is one of the best current artists that we have, and she's super underappreciated.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: So this is the album I think of most in these September, October, November, these burr months.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: And I just wanted to make sure she had a place on this list.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I think she's super easy to re-listen to.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Her music, you could even put it on as background music.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: It's not going to overwhelm you or do anything that consumes your mind.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: It's just pleasant to have on.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: So Claro slots in at number nine for me.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Number eight, Strange Trails by Lord Huron.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: This is a group that I feel comes alive this time of year.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: They really lean into the fall with their album artwork as well.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: I feel like they purposely position themselves to dominate this moody season.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: They hit the first track, Love Like Ghosts.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Not only do we get the ghost reference, but it's another one that sets the table for what's in store.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: You get a good feel for what Lord Huron are about, you get a good feel for what this record's about.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: But then they have so many references to the woods in this album.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: It would be remiss of me not to put it on a fall list.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: The Frozen Pines, Meet Me in the Woods, way out there.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: All really good songs, all with some pretty ingrained, woody references to them.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: So Lord Huron are a group that I don't know if I would be listening to them on a beautiful summer night.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: You know, they kind of have that eerie feel to them.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: And based on their artwork, I think they play right into it.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Each album, they come out one after one.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: It's just another fall-esque picture.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: So Lord Huron, definitely one of my favorite bands now.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they're going to be one of my favorite bands in February, but that's part of the magic with them.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: They wrap it up.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: The last song on this record is probably the most popular song by them, The Night We Met.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Just ties a bow on the record really well.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: It takes, it's taking everything in me right now, not to hit a few lines of The Night We Met.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: But I don't want to get taken down for any copyright infringements.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And also I have a little bit of that morning voice that, you know, coffee hasn't necessarily hit yet.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna leave the singing to the experts, but Strange Trails by Lord Huron.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Slots in it number eight, and I think it's a well-deserved spot for them.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Number seven, Born and Raised John Mayer.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: If you know me, you know I'm a big John Mayer guy.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: I had to figure out a way to work him onto this list.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: I think this is the easy choice for which album of his best represents Autumn.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: This one has so many good introspective songs, far less bluesy than some of his other stuff and some of his more popular stuff.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: But oh, does this one just scratch an itch?
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: It explores a lot of themes of time and relativity.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: John's very into watches and clocks, to a point where he he kind of freaks out about it.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: And the cover is so elaborate that it features a clock with the hands set to the time of his life in relation to the span of, I guess, an 80 or 100-year-old life.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of at the moment the record was released, those hands represent where he was at that time in relativity to that 80-year life cycle.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Very fascinating, very complex.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: And the album explores that in a lot of ways.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: But also, it's just got this really cool end of summer fall feel to it.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: I think it features some of my favorite lyrics ever.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: The best of the best, I'll just give it to you here.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: In half the time, I'll be twice my age.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Better learn how to turn the page, because time is strange when you're born and raised.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: That line, in half the time, I'll be twice my age.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Listen, I'm not a math guy.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: That threw me for a loop the first probably 10 times I heard it.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: I couldn't get my head around it.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: I finally, in the years gone by, I have learned what it meant.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: But Shadow Days, Born and Raised, Walk Ray Submarine Test, Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey, all songs that really play well this time of year.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: I think Born and Raised is one of my favorite albums ever, and I'm glad I could find a way to work it into this list because again, I wouldn't be being myself without John Mayer making up a top 10 album list.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Moving on to number six here, I've gone This Empty Northern Hemisphere by Gregory Allen Isaacov.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: A guy who doesn't get as much national attention as he should, in my opinion.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: I don't hear a ton of people speaking about the work of Mr.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Isaacov.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Forget Reggie Jackson for you baseball fans.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: He was nicknamed Mr.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: October.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Forget him.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Isaacov is Mr.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: October.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: He lives for this time of year.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: It's when he comes alive.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Every one of his songs, I think, was written to be listened to with a sweater on, with a jacket on, maybe with some rain coming down.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: The album cover, also, I could have gone a couple of different directions.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: I like a lot of Gregory's music.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I think this album cover is the most distinctly fitting for Fall.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: So I've given the nod to this one, but any of his albums really play, especially now.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Some of my favorites from him are on this album: Dandelion Wine, Big Black Car, Master and a Hound, and then probably my favorite song on the record is If I Go, I'm Goin'.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: He is just special.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: He recently did a show at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, and tickets were outrageous.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: If I could have afforded to, I would have, I would have done a lot, a lot to get there.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: That would have been a pretty special moment.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Some of the videos that have come out after the fact were exactly what you think of.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Just his beautiful voice with an orchestra behind him playing these songs in the mountains, everybody wearing some sweaters.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: That's that's the good stuff there.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: So Mr.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Isaachoff definitely deserves a seat at this table.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: He slots in at number six.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: And we're moving on to maybe a young apprentice at number five.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: It is a bit of a different vibe and a bit more of a nasally voice.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: But number five is Stick Season by Noah Khan.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Could easily be the great divide in this spot.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I'll say that.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I'm going back and forth on which album I actually like more, but for the purpose of this exercise, because of the staying power that Stick Season has had, that one gets the edge for now.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: We recently did a deep dive of this album with Cousin Jeremy on this very channel.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: So if you haven't listened to that, go back and check that out if you're a big Noah Con fan.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: It's an album that is telling you the time of year it was written and that it is about, right in the title.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: And you can see by the imagery, it's it's stick season in the Northeast.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Vermont, where he's from.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: He's talking about that time of year when the leaves fall off the trees, which hasn't quite happened yet in the Northeast, not in mid-October, but as we get deeper into November, that's the time of year Stick Season really comes alive.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: I don't want to be long-winded on Stick Season because you all know it belongs on this list.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: A ton of great songs, a really good example of phenomenal songwriting and real emotion coming through his music.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: So Noah Khan Stick Season.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: I think I would be crazy to not put that on this list.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: That's kind of the answer for our generation, at least as of now, in terms of fall albums.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Number four.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Of course, Miss Swift Kelsey makes an appearance on this list.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Of course she does.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: I would be crazy not to include my girl Taylor.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: We have gone for red by Taylor Swift at number four.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Red's time to shine, I think, is specifically in that October into November period.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: That is red season.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: A good rule of thumb: when you see red pop on those trees outside, that's when you slap the record on.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: It's so aptly named.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: I think it's a nod to Joni Mitchell's blue.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Taylor references Joni and the lucky one on this album, and Joni has the blue album, which is just a side portrait of her.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Taylor's red is a side portrait of her.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: It's a touch of class from Taylor in every way.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: The cover screams Fall.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: It might be the most synonymous album with Fall, just based visually on what you see from the album cover of our generation.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: So many songs are brilliant, and you really just want to drive around, enjoy some foliage, and listen to Red at full volume as often as you can.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: It was really Taylor at the peak of her powers, in my opinion, too, combining those pop hits with her songwriting mastery.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: I think there is a couple negatives on this album that do take you out of the fall element a little bit.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And that's those very popular overplayed songs.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: But then on the flip side, you get songs like Treacherous and Better Man, State of Grace, All Too Well, Everything Has Changed.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: And Holy Ground, I mean, stop it.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: It's it's a delightful treat that Taylor gave us to enjoy all year round, but specifically during these burr months.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: This is when red really starts to shine.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: I'd be a crazy person not to include it on the list.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: So it slots in at number four for me.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna move right along to number three where I have gone for Stranger in the Alps and Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Yes, two albums in one spot.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: If you don't like it, make your own list.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: I've doubled up here because I simply couldn't decide.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: They're both too good.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: I love Phoebe's music.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And I think the people who say it's a bit too sad, uh, okay, hey, to each their own.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: I think you might be missing the point a little bit though.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Sure, it's packed with emotion, and some of it is sad if you really dive in, break down the lyrics word for word.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: But we're not sitting here breaking down each line like it's a short story and crying to it.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: It's just setting the mood for this time of year, and it does it perfectly.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: It could be background music, the the harmonies are great, the the arrangement of the songs is spectacular.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: You can also sit down and cry to it if you like.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: It's it reminds me of Ed Helms in the Office.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: I can't so just sit here and cry.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: That's what this is.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: If you want to do that, by all means, go right ahead.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: But it's just really easy to listen to.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Some of my favorite songs in the last 20 years come from these two albums.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: I could pick a bunch of my favorites.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: If I were to pick which album I prefer between these two, I happen to be a Stranger in the Alps fan, but Punisher does have a song named Halloween that's obviously pretty fitting for this time.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: So I just went for both to play it safe.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: To name a few of my favorites on Stranger in the Alps.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: I love Smoke Signals, Motion Sickness and Scott Street, two of my favorite songs ever.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Georgia, another great one there.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: And on Punisher, I love Garden Song, Kyoto, Moon Song, and Graceland 2.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Just really special stuff from Phoebe.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: She dresses up in that skeleton costume all the time.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: She's an enjoyer of this time of year and she knows what she's doing too.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: She's on tour right now.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: Lost Weekend, that that album might be in the running a few years down the road.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: So, Phoebe, keep doing what you're doing.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: You are spectacular.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: And of course, you get a top three spot in the ranking.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Here we go now.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Top two.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: These are the heavy, heavy hitters on this list.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And you guys might hate me.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Number two, yes, I'm doing two albums in one again.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: I've done it again.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: The top 10 has kind of turned into a top 12.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Sue me.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry about it.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: I am.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: It was just too tough to call.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: It was a photo finish.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: So I've gone for the sister albums, Folklore and Evermore, once again by Taylor Swift.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: I know you're saying, oh, he's a simpleton.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: He likes Taylor Swift.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: He likes pop music.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Folklore and Evermore are incredible works of art.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: If you don't like it, once again, take it up in the comments.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: I'll hear you out.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: But I think I go back to these albums so, so frequently because of how well they're written.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: They're beautiful sounding.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Aaron Desner's work with Taylor's great.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Jack Antonoff kind of changes pace.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: He shows he could throw an off-speed pitch every once in a while, which I appreciate.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: I think for me, folklore, maybe because of the song August, but it reminds me of those dying days of summer and into late September.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe even into the beginning of October.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: It's beautifully written, and there's just a lot of songs in there that you want to keep going back to.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: But then my favorite Taylor Swift album, Evermore, takes over when we get to November and into even early December.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: We get that feeling of the end of fall heading into Christmas.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: And some of my personal favorite Taylor Swift songs fall on Evermore.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: We get Willow starts it with a fastball right by the hitter, right into Champagne Problems, Gold Rush, Tis the Damn Season.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: It's just brilliant.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: And also then, as the albums we get to the back half, we get Coney Island, Ivy, Cowboy Like Me, Evermore, Marjorie.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: It's spectacular.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: It's Taylor Swift at her best, in my opinion.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: I talked about Red being Taylor at the peak of her powers, which I think is true because she still captivated that huge mainstream audience.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Folklore and Evermore is when she kind of had the world by the balls and she decided to go in a different direction.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: And I thought it was her most creative direction.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: I associate with this type of Taylor Swift music the most now.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: I love these two albums.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: They're sister albums, by the way, too.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, they came out during COVID.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: I feel like they can take up one spot in the ranking, no problem.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: So Folklore and Evermore number two, two thumbs up from me to Miss Swift Kelsey, because these albums did a lot for my fandom of her.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Lastly, the finale, the moment we've all been waiting for, the best fall album of all time.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: It is For Emma, Forever Ago, by Bonavere.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: Now, I know what you're thinking.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: What is this guy talking about?
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: And again, this is my favorite.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: It doesn't need to be yours, but I would encourage you, if you have not given it a shot, to go out and give it a shot.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: I think the backstory behind this album, which I'll get to in a second, plays into it as well.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: But this is the album I find myself playing on vinyl the most.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: It's definitely my most repeated.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: It's short and to the point, but it's incredibly well written.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: It's up there with the this Noah Khan and the Taylor Swift writing.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: It even exceeds it in some places, in my opinion.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: This is a Get Your Dictionary Out album.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Because there's going to be a few words in here you don't know what they mean.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: But Bonavere, he may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you haven't given him that chance, this would be a great place to start.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Justin Vernon, that that's who Bonavere is.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: It's just the project he he decided to come up with.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: He was facing a tough time in his life, it seems.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: I think his band broke up.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: A long-term relationship he was in had ended, and he got super sick with some serious viruses and infections, and I think some liver problems.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: So he packed his bags and he went to his father's small hunting cabin back in Wisconsin, and he just kind of bunkered up there for months.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: He spent his entire time creating this album.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: And you could hear it in the music.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: It just bleeds through.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: It's why I love it.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: It doesn't sound like anything else.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: There's some quirkiness and weirdness to it, some things that sound like, oh, they're off or they're wrong, but it's unique.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: You can't point to it and say it sounds like something else, in my opinion.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: It's beautifully written, it's really raw, it's emotional.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: And I love his voice and how he stacks his harmonies.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Some of the standouts for me, I love the song Flume that starts things off.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: And then regarding Stacks is great for Emma and Blindsided are a couple of my favorites.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: The big song off this album, the one that became probably the most popular, is Skinny Love, which you may have heard the cover from I think it's Birdie.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: She covers Skinny Love, and that's beautiful as well.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: But the original Skinny Love comes from this record.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: And it's just a great, quick, easy to listen to record to round out this list.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: There was some there was some great competition for that top spot.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: But Bonafair takes it in the end.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: A couple of honorable mentions as we wrap things up.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: So many different directions I could have gone here.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: And I probably could have easily done a top 20 because this actually was a top 12.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: But that's going to be our little secret.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: I'll just read through these honorable mentions quickly.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: By the way, I forgive you by Brandy Carlisle.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, she is sick.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: This one was a hard cut for me.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: This was the last one on the cutting room floor, is what I would say.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: It it's so raw and emotional.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Brandy Carlisle's voice is a joke.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: The song, the joke.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Brandy Carlisle deserves a mention.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Good Riddance by Gracie Abrams.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: Sad not to have Gracie on the list.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: I'll say it.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: I'm sad not to have her on the list.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: She's still up and coming, though.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: This list is constantly evolving.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: I would not be surprised if I ran this back next year and Good Riddance makes its way onto the top 10.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Harvest by Neil Young.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: It's a classic, and I do enjoy a couple songs from there, of course.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: But I just don't listen to it enough to put it on my list.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: I do respect what it's done for the game.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Another one that uh I was introduced to a couple years ago that I would feel disingenuous putting it on because it wasn't something that shaped me.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: But American Football by American Football, I hadn't heard of this group.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: They are really good.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: And this album is perfect for fall.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: So some ball knowers will probably have this on their list.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: And hey, I tip my cap to you.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: I I can't quite get there yet, but another one that in a couple years might make its way on there.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Another great album, Dragon, New Warm Mountain, I believe in you by Big Thief.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Now, the reason the simple reason that didn't make its way on the list, it's just a horrible name for an album.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: It's way too long, it's a mouthful.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: I felt like an idiot just now reading it, just simply doing too much.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Big Thief are a good group.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: We we gotta figure out a way to condense that album title.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: That's just ridiculous.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: And then lastly, I will say Reverie by Amble.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Amble is an Irish folk group, and the lead singer's voice is one of one.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Basically, every time he opens his mouth, you kind of start thinking, oh yeah, I could get down with a glass of bourbon to listen to this in a cozy, cozy environment.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: So shout out Amble.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: That rounds out the honorable mentions.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: First and potentially last episode as a solo man in the books.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: We'll see what the reception is to this.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Hopefully it wasn't too painful for the listener.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Tried to get you in and out quickly.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: On my end, I just got to sit back, sip some coffee, discuss some music, and I pressed record.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: So it wasn't too painful for me.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: I hope it wasn't too painful for you.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: I appreciate all of you tuning in.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: Let me know your thoughts on the list.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: What do you like?
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: What do you hate?
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Do you want any more solo episodes?
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Have you had enough of me?
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Let me know.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Text me, leave a comment, like and subscribe on your way out.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Thank you all for tuning in.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: And until next time, take care.
