Transcript
- 0:02This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering one piece
- 0:12the live action Netflix series, Season one, episode seven, The Girl with
- 0:18the Softish Tattoo. In this episode, we get the iconic moment of Loofy
- 0:26giving Nami his straw hat to wear while he gathers his friends to kick some
- 0:32ass. I am very very here for it. Welcome to spoil Me,
- 0:57Welcome to the show. Everyone. I am the Tasha. Thank you very
- 1:00much to Gabby for commissioning this episode. You guys, I'm so bummed one
- 1:10episode left after this. I am so sad. This has been such fun.
- 1:17I like, I really really want them to just keep making this show
- 1:23in perpetuity like the anime. Tighten everything up, do whatever you need to
- 1:29do. I'm fine with that, but I really want to be watching this
- 1:36series ten years from now, with like new episodes coming out. You know.
- 1:40That's I hope so much that they don't cancel it in the way that
- 1:47Netflix does. I know they've already you know, it's just greenlit a second
- 1:51season, but that's no guarantee of anything, and I just am desperately keeping
- 1:57my fingers crossed and hoping, and yeah, I don't think that they have
- 2:02anything like a drop date for season two. I think it's just been announced
- 2:06that they are starting on filming. But hopefully one of y'all will commission me
- 2:10to watch that too, I really hope. So we'll see. But let's
- 2:15begin. Let's begin, Okay. I just want to acknowledge too that I
- 2:20love the title of this episode, The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo, as
- 2:23clearly a reference to the Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, and you know,
- 2:28she does have a pretty traumatic history. It's granted, not quite on the
- 2:31level of the Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, but uh, we're I appreciate
- 2:38that little joke. It's pretty good. So we started the episode off with
- 2:45Buggy directing Oosop and I can't with how much Buggy says shit and shittastic.
- 2:55I think he called them shitty it's last episode, but he is just mocking
- 3:01Oose up here for not knowing which direction is starboard, and he says something
- 3:09like I thought clowns were supposed to be funny, and Buggy says, want
- 3:13to say that to my face, and then Zoro rans the corner and he
- 3:19says, I know Lufy made a deal with you, but if you trick
- 3:23us, and Buggy says, what are you gonna do bleed on me?
- 3:30Which that's a money pythonline. But also, sir, you are only ahead
- 3:38like you have no body. You are not in any position to be making
- 3:44threats against the guy standing with a sword at his hip, a hip that
- 3:52he has because he has a whole body. I would just advise not,
- 3:57but Buggy isn't really thinking things through. So Zoro picks him up by his
- 4:02little hair cover what do you call that a handkerchief, I guess, and
- 4:08hangs him over the side, and he just is like, well, you
- 4:13know, Zoro, buddy, We're cool. Everything's fine, right, And
- 4:16then you start singing this song. Oh there once was a girl with tangerine
- 4:21hair, still my map and look me straight at somewhere, truly a crafted
- 4:26and crooked young lass. But you can't deny she had a spectacular oh god,
- 4:31right on my nose. Look. I don't like Buggy, but she
- 4:39do have an ass though. You got to give it to her. So
- 4:45me cut over to Loofy, who is sitting with Sanji. They're trying to
- 4:51fish and Lufy is very impatient, which is unsurprising. Soanji is extremely philosophical
- 5:00about the whole thing. Sometimes they bite right away, Sometimes it takes ages.
- 5:05Sometimes you don't catch anything at all. And he's wearing a pretty chunky
- 5:13silver ring on it looks like the middle finger of his right hand. And
- 5:19I don't recall if this is anything significant or you know, even if it's
- 5:25meant to be something significant on the show yet in terms of like is it
- 5:30just a costume choice, I don't know, but I just wanted to mention
- 5:33that I noticed it because I couldn't see from this far away what it looked
- 5:40like, but it was pretty sizable, and I sort of wondered if maybe
- 5:43it was like something to remind him of Zeph or the Baratier or you know,
- 5:49anything like that. I don't know, And kiddos, I have got
- 5:57to just say one more time, Sanji could get it, like a few
- 6:03times, this gentleman has got something going on, and it's like I want
- 6:13that to not be true because of his like, oh, women are all
- 6:16a mystery. Women don't say what they actually mean later this episode because that's
- 6:21just some bullshit. However, also it mixed in with that kind of like
- 6:30misogynistic take there is him being able to sense there's more to the story,
- 6:36and he's right about that, so he has better judgment despite these like cliche
- 6:43sort of here's the thing. The whole idea of women don't say what they
- 6:47mean. The reason that is like still bandied about is because for a long
- 6:51time women were not allowed to say what they meant. We were punished quite
- 6:57frequently and by a variety of parties for saying what we actually meant. So
- 7:01we had to learn how to gauge the audience we were speaking to and the
- 7:06possible consequences of what we were saying, and be extremely passive in the way
- 7:13that we said it. So that's an issue. And secondly, we often
- 7:19do just say what we mean and men don't want to hear it, and
- 7:24so they just don't and then they act surprised. This is often a thing
- 7:28when women decide that they want a divorce and the men will be like,
- 7:30well, this came out of nowhere. If you look at the documentation,
- 7:33You're honor, it was said many times that she was getting fed up.
- 7:39And it's also funny because like men will just tell you fucking lies all the
- 7:44time. The number of things like I really feel good about at least with
- 7:50Owen and Brendan. I never had lies from them almost ever, and they
- 7:59are there's reason that I stayed with them because the lies that you get fed
- 8:03by dudes. They may have a totally different motivation in not saying what they
- 8:09mean, but it's still like they still do it. So anyway, all
- 8:18I have to say, as much as it bugs me that he bandies those
- 8:24kinds of bullshit takes about, I really can't be mad at the results,
- 8:31which are that he tends to look below the surface and sort of try and
- 8:35suss out that there's something actually going on. And later on when we get
- 8:41the story about what happened to Nami and her sister, he's the one that's
- 8:45like trying not to sniffle in the corner because he's gotten quite emotional listening to
- 8:48the tale. So all of that in his favor, combined with the fact
- 8:54that he can cook, combined with the just like easy grace, there's just
- 9:01a vibe and an elegance to him. It's just really doing it for me.
- 9:07It just really is. So I'm sorry, Zoro, I'm gonna have
- 9:11to backseat you. I never thought that would happen, but there you are.
- 9:15But yeah, he says to Lufy at this point, but we're not
- 9:16talking about fishing, are we, And uh Lufy says, I just wish
- 9:24I knew Nami was okay, to which son she says, a beautiful,
- 9:28talented woman does not choose to ally herself with a pirate like our along.
- 9:35Nomi clearly needs to be rescued. And this is when Zoro comes up and
- 9:39says her tattoos, says, different tattoos don't tell the whole story, and
- 9:43like any woman, she's a mystery. Nomy made her choice. You don't
- 9:48know why. The only thing I want to hear from you are dinner specials.
- 10:00I really enjoy the two of them, Like we finally get to Sanji
- 10:03calling Zoro mosshead. I'm into it, and I like that this like conflict
- 10:09between the two of them. It feels because you know, I have no
- 10:13problem with the petty conflicts that they have later it's quite entertaining. But this
- 10:18moment, because it's the Nami that they are angry about, each of them
- 10:24in their own ways, it feels very organic because with Zoro there's a specific
- 10:31thing going on with him, where for me, what's happening is that he's
- 10:35actually angry at the fact that he grew to like Nam and he trusted Nam,
- 10:39and then to find out that she was with the Arlong pirates. You
- 10:43know, he made an exception joining this crew because even though he has had
- 10:46a whole thing against pirates, Lufy felt like a different kind of pirate.
- 10:52But then to find out that Nami isn't a different kind of pirate, She's
- 10:54the exact type that he has been going after. It's a betrayal and it's
- 11:00him seeing things in a very black and white way. It's almost like he
- 11:05is so cynical that when the hint that she is like part of the Arlon
- 11:11crew is dropped, it's I say hint. But you know, he is
- 11:18fully willing to go whole hog into Oh yeah, she was lying, she
- 11:22was conning us. Because he has seen a lot of bad shit and is
- 11:24willing to see the worst in people, like it's not hard for him to
- 11:28believe at all. But with Soanji, he loves women, he is much
- 11:37more like interested in defending her. I am going to go ahead and hazard
- 11:41a guess because she is a woman. So there's just that intrinsic sort of
- 11:46bias that he has. But then the fact that you know, he because
- 11:52he wasn't personally betrayed, that he isn't as close to the situation as Zora
- 11:58was. It would make sense that he's more willing to offer up some benefit
- 12:03of the doubt because he's not hurt by her. You know, this isn't
- 12:07this isn't hitting him where he lives, so he can step back and have
- 12:11a slightly more objective approach. And it just makes sense the way that each
- 12:16of them is just kind of sniping in each other. So this is when
- 12:24us up yells land ho and I always love when they say land ho and
- 12:31everybody turns. This is not just the show. Everybody turns and they're like
- 12:37one hundred yards away from an island, and it's like the point of yelling
- 12:41land hose because you see it long before anybody on the deck would see it,
- 12:46like you're on the you know, in the crow's nest or whatever,
- 12:48or because other people aren't paying attention. But this is like a giant area
- 12:52that there's no way they would have missed it. It was just very funny
- 12:54to me. But yeah, so we cut from there. We have that's
- 13:01the cold open, and I just wanted to mention. You know, every
- 13:05time that we have one of those cold opens, we get a different Jolly
- 13:11Roger, and this one is it has like two curls coming out from behind
- 13:18it, like almost like cinnamon roll style curls. It's tongue is sticking out,
- 13:24and it has a winky eye and stripey blue and white kerchief. I
- 13:31can't figure out what this is in reference to you guys, because it's not
- 13:35Nammy. At first, I thought it was Buggy because he's just such a
- 13:41goober. But it doesn't work for him either. And I mean it's not
- 13:46Namy's sister, I don't think, certainly, not one of our alongs,
- 13:52guys, Like, it just doesn't. I don't know. I feel like
- 13:56I'm missing something here, so if anybody wants to help me out with that.
- 13:58But anyway, so we after we see the title card, we get
- 14:09nam as a child. This little girl is so like looks so much like
- 14:13her, and she reminds me a lot of like a you know, cursed
- 14:16and Dunst when she was in interview with a vampire. But we have her,
- 14:24you know, as a child, playing with her adoptive sister and they
- 14:30are in the tangerine Groves and they are out here with their adoptive mother,
- 14:35whose name I always forget. It's like Bellemere, I feel like, and
- 14:41she bell maher maybe, and they're playing snap in the garden and it's a
- 14:48very sweet scene. Like the whole vibe here is really warm and loving and
- 14:58friendly. And they don't have money. You know, they're struggling, but
- 15:05you really do see how much she loves these girls and how there is a
- 15:13home here and I just really really like this moment. So let me come
- 15:18back into the present. And Nami is playing poker with the fishmen and she
- 15:28is up against this dude who's got a couple stripes down his face. There's
- 15:35a very Polly Walnut's sort of energy to him. Uh, there's just like
- 15:41all of these guys the really it feels like they are designed to look like
- 15:46a combination of a fish and like a Dick Tracy villain, you know what
- 15:52I'm saying. And she provokes this one fishman that he really like looks around
- 15:58to every as she makes a joke that he can't count higher than five.
- 16:04He looks around and he goes all in and it really feels like he just
- 16:08fell directly into her trap, like this is exactly what she was trying to
- 16:11get him to do, and he loses, and when she wins, he
- 16:21calls her a cheat. There is no evidence that I know of. He
- 16:26seems to just be like a sore loser. But we then see her walking
- 16:33away and she does have other Queen cards in her bag. She was cheating.
- 16:41Now I'm really curious whether or not he knew for a fact, if
- 16:48it was just the fact that, like, was he kind of counting cards?
- 16:52Like did he know how? You know what I'm saying, Like,
- 16:56this is what I really want to know, is was he just being a
- 16:59sore lose? Because he may very well have simply been pissy and wound up
- 17:04right by accident, But I am curious, like if he had good reason
- 17:08to think. So he accuses her. She uses her knife, and she
- 17:18just says, you should know that nobody in this crew lies about money.
- 17:25And there's a long face down between the two of them, and finally he
- 17:30lets go of her, and she gets summoned by Arlong and she goes to
- 17:33see him, and he sends her on a mission to go and get the
- 17:42payment from the people of Coco Island or Cocoa village. They are on the
- 17:48same island because they have failed to pay up. They are late on their
- 17:52payment, and then when she finally goes to collect, they don't have the
- 17:57whole thing. And this is I found her acting like in this part.
- 18:07I feel like, so here's the thing I'm gonna I'm gonna say that I
- 18:12understand. At the same time, I find her acting to be a little
- 18:17bit like one note sometimes, But I also understand that the point with Nami
- 18:25a lot is that she's keeping it inside and trying to keep a lid on
- 18:29her actual emotions because she can't let things show. So it's a very like
- 18:33difficult line to walk, because this is what happened as well with Denaris in
- 18:40Game of Thrones. In the book, she talks about keeping her face placid,
- 18:47but you at least get to see inside her interior mind and understand how
- 18:52money emotions she's experiencing and how difficult certain moments are for her despite not being
- 18:56able to show. And in the television show it was a lot harder because
- 19:03she just had to keep a straight face so often that it wound up becoming
- 19:08almost tedious since she was attempting to convey I am keeping a straight face,
- 19:18but also there's a ton of emotion behind my face and I have to let
- 19:22that show somehow in my eyes, but only in my eyes. It can't
- 19:26come out anywhere else. And that's a really difficult thing to pull off as
- 19:30an actor, and I think that they both are able to pull it off.
- 19:33But I do also think that having that be something that goes on for
- 19:38such a long time can feel to one note, like I said, too
- 19:47tedious. So I was sort of relieved when we get to the end of
- 19:52this episode and she has her breakdown, because we got to see a different
- 19:56side of her that was truly, like so upset, set in a way
- 20:00that she has not allowed herself to be. And I just felt relief for
- 20:07the actress, and I'm sure that it was nice for her as well to
- 20:11get a moment where she's like able to just let loose for a second,
- 20:15you know. And I also want to mention that I after I finished the
- 20:23episode, I wanted to see the moment that Lufy puts his hat on Nami
- 20:29in the anime again. I went and found the clip on YouTube, and
- 20:33she's wearing the exact like green. It's not like, you know, it's
- 20:38designed differently here. It's not strappy the way that that is, but she
- 20:45has the same sort of overall outfit and once we get to that scene,
- 20:49it's like shot for shot with the anime. It's really really similar. So
- 20:56anyway, she gets sent on this mission to our by our along and she
- 21:00super pissed about it, and we get another flashback of her as a little
- 21:04girl looking through this map book and her mother, Bell Mayer, I'm saying,
- 21:11mother, you know it is. That's the whole point is that she
- 21:14considers herself their mother. She asks Nami where she got it, and Nami
- 21:21has to admit that she stole it from the bookstore and tries to justify it
- 21:25by saying that she didn't hurt anyone, and bell Mayer is like, I
- 21:33you hurt the people who stole it. Why would you do that? And
- 21:36she says, because I wanted it? And this little actress, I thought
- 21:40pulled this off quite well because she says because I wanted it, and there's
- 21:44a certain like snottiness to it, but you can also see the fear like
- 21:51she's being preemptively defiant, and so the snottiness there's sort of like something that
- 21:57kind of undercuts it a little bit, and she just says, I didn't
- 22:00have any money. I am tired of being poor. I'm tired of eating
- 22:06tangerines. I'm tired of eating and Nogako's hand me downs and this is like
- 22:15something that I can deeply relate to. And bell Mayer says, we may
- 22:21not have much, but we have a roof over our heads and we love
- 22:22each other. That's what makes us a family. And she says, no,
- 22:26we're not a real family. She's not my sister, and you're not
- 22:29even my mom. And Nogako slaps her across the face, and I had
- 22:34forgotten that she does. She does that in the anime as well, and
- 22:38Nomy goes running up out of there, and I thought maybe they would have
- 22:45bell mayor I hope I'm saying that right. I think bell Mayer that they
- 22:52would have her like apologize to Nami for hitting her. I was wondering if
- 22:56they would because in the anime she doesn't. It's supposed to be like she
- 23:02meant what she did because it was so offensive to her what Nami said.
- 23:07But I kind of wondered if the the live action they would sort of pull
- 23:15back a little bit and try and be like, oh, we're going to
- 23:18acknowledge that, like slapping a little kid in the face was not the move,
- 23:22you know. They don't though, They just go ahead and roll past
- 23:26it into her story and her telling Noami, I kept a st plate on
- 23:30the stove for you, and I kind of the part of me like appreciated
- 23:34that. Even though I don't like that she hit Nami. I also like
- 23:40the fact that the show isn't particularly trying to change that part of Bellmayer's personality.
- 23:47But yeah, So this is when we get the flashback and she's telling
- 23:51Nami about how she was injured and she was starving and she wandered into this
- 23:56area where there had been an attack and she thought she was going to die,
- 24:02and she found Nami and Nojako under I think it's like an overturned wagon
- 24:08or something. The two of them are hiding under there, and she says,
- 24:14the moment I saw the two of you, I knew I had to
- 24:15live so that I could take care of you, and we are a family,
- 24:22like you know, it comes down to her being like, don't you
- 24:25ever fucking forget it? And I know that you will do the right thing.
- 24:30And when we come back to this flashback later, Nami is giving the
- 24:37book back. She's giving it to the uh sort of cop I don't even
- 24:44know. I don't remember what his name is, But we'll deal with that
- 24:48scene later. Our alongs vibe with Nami. This actor who plays Arlung I
- 24:56went and like looked up what he looks like. First of all, he
- 24:57finds hell, which is unsurprising, and secondly, I feel like he really
- 25:07is excellent at managing that weird, unsettling energy of I'm pretending to be friendly,
- 25:19but I'm not friend. I'm not your friend, and I have a
- 25:26distinct understanding of the hierarchy I'm working with here. So there's a sense of
- 25:33him like telling her over and over different scenes to relax, to have fun
- 25:40and to and he says things like I really miss you, and you know,
- 25:44it's like he wants to be chummy, but it feels like he is
- 25:49only ever actually saying this because he knows how uncomfortable it makes her, Like
- 25:56he would never approach a different person and who actually wanted to be in the
- 26:00inner circle the same way, because the whole thing is about power and making
- 26:07her feel like she's off kilter and unbalanced. So you know, you've approached
- 26:15different people in different ways to make them feel really uncertain about where they stand.
- 26:19With you and with her, this sort of like false intimacy. It's
- 26:26just he does it so well where I find myself almost wishing she would relax,
- 26:36just have a drink, just be cool for a second. And I
- 26:37have to remind myself, like the instant she did, that he would find
- 26:41something to fuck with her, because the whole point of this isn't that he
- 26:45wants her to relax, like that's the opposite of it. But yeah,
- 26:52anyway, he comes in and he says, uh, you should be proud
- 26:56of yourself. Now we know every marine base and strong from here to the
- 27:00goa kingdom, and you're a valued member of this crew. We make a
- 27:07great team. You were gone so long part of me thought you might not
- 27:12be coming back. And she says, of course I came back. We
- 27:18have a deal, don't we, And he says, yeah, I'm a
- 27:22fishman of my word. But he ain't. He ain't that though, So
- 27:29she hands over the map in this you know, big moment here where it
- 27:33seems like maybe she's going to fuck with him, and he says, soon
- 27:38fishman will rule the East Blue and then onto the Grand Line and every other
- 27:45see after that. And we have more talk this episode, not here,
- 27:51but in general about the way that fishmen have been enslaved. And I wish
- 28:00that if they were going to kind of keep harping on about this aspect of
- 28:04the way he like wants retribution, that we had gotten to see more of
- 28:11what he meant, or get an example. It feels like because the only
- 28:18time that we have ever seen a fishman other than him was the may Or
- 28:23d I think at the Barazzier, who is not being mistreated. It doesn't
- 28:29seem like there's he's a slave. It seems like that's just his job.
- 28:33There's not a really good sense of what it is that he's upset about.
- 28:37You can understand it in like a you know, the broad strokes of it
- 28:41as a hypothetical, but it doesn't have an emotional hit because we haven't gotten
- 28:48a look at this trade and what he's talking about. It almost could feel
- 28:56like he's exaggerating things you didn't know for sure, you know what I mean.
- 29:04So, yeah, he says that marines can be bought and sold when
- 29:11an animal gets too wild, it must be brought to heal, and he
- 29:15does like he's sort of holding her chin with the map tube, and he
- 29:22says, you'll have a special place in my empire, and Nami says,
- 29:26i'd better, and he starts laughing and says, oh, na me,
- 29:34how I've missed you. But I have another job for you in the meantime.
- 29:41And this is when he tells her to go to Cocoa Village and get
- 29:47the money. And it's obvious her being like, i'd better. He has
- 29:51to show her her place, remind her that she doesn't get to throw attitude
- 29:56at him because she's going to be like sent to do something distasteful as punishment.
- 30:02So we then jump over to the Barazzier and we've got Garp turning up
- 30:10and asking Zef if he has seen Loofy, and he knows him by the
- 30:18name Red Legs Zef he was captain of the Cook Pirates, and Zeph says,
- 30:26yeah, well those days are far behind me. I'm retired. I'm
- 30:29a chef now and the only thing under my command is this restaurant. But
- 30:34yeah, he's being kind of, you know, defensive right out of the
- 30:40gate, because understandably he is assuming that they are here for him, and
- 30:47gar Pass to be like, no, no, no, we're here for
- 30:49a young pirate named Loofy who was here recently, and Zef does the whole
- 30:56hmm. I'm afraid I can't help you. I don't have such a great
- 31:00memory, you know, I'm growing old, and they're like straw hat running
- 31:03his mouth. Nope, drawing a blank. And then how about a meal
- 31:10on the house. I've got a dozen tee bone steaks and a busted cooler.
- 31:15It'd be such a shame to let all that delicious marbling go to waste.
- 31:22And I love as he says this, You guys, if you're watching,
- 31:26like really closely, the wistful longing that comes into Garb's eyes as Zef
- 31:37says this, it's like Nammy with the mention of treasure. It's just so
- 31:45it's comedic. It's so good. And Bogart starts to say, we're not
- 31:51here for a meal, we're here, and Garp interrupts and says that steak,
- 31:57and you could see like his mouth is all already watering, and Zeph
- 32:01says medium rare, and he nods and says more rare than medium. And
- 32:08that's how the episode or the scene cuts off, and later on when we
- 32:14see him, he's eating with this just hedistic appreciation that got me right in
- 32:22the heart. I love to see people enjoying food, and it's like this.
- 32:30I mean this in terms of I like to see it because I love
- 32:35food and I imagine eating it and it's like entertainment in that way. But
- 32:38also I love to cook and I love that seeing like people appreciating what I
- 32:44have made. And this has been a bone of contention with me and Owen
- 32:46a couple of times, because I will make this meal that takes forever and
- 32:51I've put so much effort into it, and I'm really hoping he likes it,
- 32:53and I'm not sure if he will. And Owen doesn't get to fly
- 33:00with like saying that he likes something, so he'll just put his head down
- 33:04and inhale a whole bowl of it in seven minutes, and then I have
- 33:10to be like, so, how was it, and he'll be like,
- 33:14oh, it was really good, But he will never give any indication of
- 33:17really enjoying it while he's eating it, and I always have to ask because
- 33:22he's just not effusive, you know. So whenever I come across somebody who
- 33:27does what I do, which is like take a bite and just go oh
- 33:30my god, that's good, like thank you, appreciate you. So we
- 33:36go back to Cocoa village and we've got the boys arriving and looking around at
- 33:43all of these huts and how much has been destroyed. And they come across
- 33:49one particular hut that's been literally yanked up out of the ground so that there's
- 33:55just a like hole underneath it, and they're all looking at it like what
- 34:01the hell could even have done that? And I love us up immediately being
- 34:07like, maybe maybe I should head back to the to the you know,
- 34:10the ship and just like make sure everything's cool the marry. And as they
- 34:15keep walking, he's like, or you know, I could go back and
- 34:19like take the merry around if we don't want to walk back the whole way.
- 34:23He's got some good lines here, Buggy in the bag, Hey,
- 34:30shithead, I think we can all agree that our lung's a bad fish.
- 34:32But why don't we quit lolligagging and go get my body back? Soanji,
- 34:43I think, asks us up, do you want to carry him for a
- 34:46while? And usup says oh no, new guy carries the clown head,
- 34:52and later on Sonji stuffs a tangerine in his mouth and says, new guy
- 34:57shuts up the clown head. So then we go to the scene where the
- 35:04whole village is attempting to put together enough money to pay the fine that they
- 35:08have to pay, the tribute whatever, and they put it together, and
- 35:14the dude with the mustache is saying it's not enough, and this woman says,
- 35:20do we have time to get some more? And you just hear Nami
- 35:23say no, you don't, and I love she walks through. Everybody here
- 35:31is dressed in these very drab like even clothing that head used to be brightly
- 35:37colored is so coated and dirt it's all basically the same, like brown.
- 35:44And she walks forward and comes face to face with her sister, who has
- 35:49grown now, and Loofy almost steps in, but I think it's Zoro who
- 35:55stops him and is just like, just observe, and her sister spits at
- 36:00her feet and is just like, you are so full of shit. I
- 36:06am disgusted by you, and walks away from her. I love the tattoos
- 36:10she's got, they look so cool. She just looks dope, like you
- 36:15know, and she doesn't. In the anime as well, she had one
- 36:16of the cooler character designs for a woman because so many of the women look
- 36:21the same in the show. So yeah, she stalks off, and you
- 36:27see Lufy sort of taking note that there must be a special relationship between the
- 36:31two of them because everyone else is acting afraid of Nami except for that girl
- 36:36and that you know. Then this girl spat and left like there's something specific
- 36:39happening here, and we then have Nami saying to mustache man, do you
- 36:46have something for me? And we then jump into a flashback of him saying
- 36:51that to her, and she is returning the book she stole and you know,
- 36:59assuring him that she will never steal again. But when she does this,
- 37:02he says, do you have your fingers crossed behind your back? And
- 37:06she says maybe, which was a cute moment. But yeah, he's got
- 37:13a good energy. I like this guy. You know in the anime as
- 37:16well, he had he was a voice of reason, mister Genzo. Okay,
- 37:22there she just said it, but uh, I feel like this actor
- 37:24was a really good choice for it because he has the feeling of somebody who
- 37:28could be a hard ass if pushed but he doesn't like to do it.
- 37:31So this is when Arlong and his people show up, and they just begin
- 37:36to beat the hell out of everyone, and he says, citizens of Cocoa
- 37:39Village, this town belongs to me, and they all flee, and mister
- 37:45Gonzo goes forward and gets his ass handed to him by a fish man.
- 37:52He like is disarmed with almost no effort, and that is where he stains
- 38:00the injury that has scarred his face. And our along is indeed the man
- 38:06who just yanked an entire house up by the roots. Basically, so Bell
- 38:13Maaire flees with Nami and she hides them in the I hesitate to call it
- 38:22a basement because it feels like it's not used for anything. It feels like
- 38:24it's purely there for hiding and not for storage. But she keeps them down
- 38:30there, and we have that scene where Arlong comes in demands a certain amount
- 38:35of money, which she has, and he starts to leave until he notices
- 38:43that there are two other places set at the table. Even though there's no
- 38:50registration of family living at this address, apparently they have that info. I
- 38:55don't know where they got it. There must be some central like a sort
- 39:00of town hall that has info and they were looking through that. But yeah,
- 39:07the moment where he notices that this actor just infuses the moment with so
- 39:12much dread. It's just very, very creepy, and you want so much
- 39:15for him to just leave, you know. So before we get there,
- 39:22we have Loufy facing off with Nami and her telling him I conned you into
- 39:29getting the map for me. I was never part of your stupid crew,
- 39:32and he says, you don't mean that. And when he says that,
- 39:37you see her just get so frustrated because it's she could act in the moment
- 39:42like she's frustrated because she wants him to believe her so bad because she she
- 39:49thinks she means it, But you know that it's that she's frustrated that he
- 39:52can see through enough to tell that she doesn't mean it. You know,
- 39:57she is trying to protect him. That's genuinely her motivation here is to keep
- 40:04him away because she feels like she will hurt him and if she doesn't,
- 40:08ourlong will and so it's up to her to get him to hit the road.
- 40:15But just knowing that he is able to sort of read her more than
- 40:21she wants to be read that's where the frustration is really coming from. So
- 40:29she walks away, and it leaves those four boys standing there discussing what's actually
- 40:36going on here. Oos Up is like, that went really really badly.
- 40:40Should we just go back to the boat, and Sanji says, there's something
- 40:46else going on here. She was, you know, like, I don't
- 40:51like this. Zora's like, I mean, she made it pretty clear she
- 40:55just wants us to leave. And this is when Sonji says, you know,
- 40:59women, they never say what they mean, don't you guys get it?
- 41:04She's one of them. She's a bad guy. The villages are terrified
- 41:08of her. And this is when Lufi says, not all of them.
- 41:15And he decides that he is going to go and talk to the blue haired
- 41:19girl. I love that he just says, hey, scar guy, and
- 41:23understandably, as he introduces himself as I'm a pirate, Zoro feels the need
- 41:29to intervene and say hunter, pirate hunter and explain we're here for our long,
- 41:37which he understandably doesn't think these four have got any fucking chance. They
- 41:45look like a pretty ragtag bunch. Let's you know, it's weird. We've
- 41:50got a couple guys in sort of Hawaiian ish shirt. Sure one of them
- 41:53has a weapon, and he seems the one that's able to handle himself most.
- 41:58But then we've got this scrawny kid, it looks unarmed in a hat.
- 42:01We've got a dude in a suit who does not really give the energy
- 42:06off of like a fighter exactly. He's you know, clearly well built,
- 42:12but also unarmed. And then we've got who's up in the back, not
- 42:16making eye contact and trying to be as small as possible and not draw any
- 42:21attention and just generally cowering, and uh, yeah, the whole thing is
- 42:27is not looking like these are people who stand a chance up against our along.
- 42:34So yeah, he gives them the name of Najiko and says down the
- 42:37rope to the down the road to the edge of the tangerine grove, and
- 42:43uh, I just sort of wondered if that rang a bell for Zorro,
- 42:47because you know, she did mention the tangerine grow grove. So when they
- 42:54get there, she's got a weapon, does not want to talk to them,
- 43:00and it finally like they are able to negotiate because Sanji is charming.
- 43:08He is the guy who is smoothing the way, and he says, well,
- 43:15we want to know what happened, and if you would like I could
- 43:19make you something to eat, and she's like, we don't have many ingredients,
- 43:24and he says, you could be surprised what I could do with just
- 43:27a few things. And later on when she eats it, she tells him
- 43:30what he made is the most delicious things she's ever eaten. I loved you.
- 43:37When she says, my sister doesn't have any friends, and he says,
- 43:39sisters makes sense. Both as beautiful as each other. He's very reliable,
- 43:49but you know he is the one that seems to warm her up.
- 43:52When he says, how about a meal, you really get a response out
- 43:55of her that indicates that this is a person who doesn't reliably have have meals.
- 44:00You know, she's got just about what she needs to survive, and
- 44:04that's kind of it. So, yeah, this a little bit and the
- 44:12way that he like worms his way in, I just really enjoyed it.
- 44:17And honestly, this girl is so beautiful, Like every time that she's on
- 44:22camera, I was like, somebody needs to just sculpt her or something.
- 44:27You could make her face into one of those like Barbie heads that you would
- 44:30put makeup on, do you know, guys are the ones I mean where
- 44:32it's just like the shoulders coming out of the plank or whatever. But she
- 44:38would be like so much fun if you were a makeup artist to do makeup
- 44:42on, because she's just got one of those faces that's got so much character
- 44:46to it but is so flawless. Ah beautiful, beautiful girl. So yeah.
- 44:54We then head over to the baratier again. This is the moment where
- 45:00we get to see Garp eating. I can't remember who it is. I
- 45:05feel like it might have been what's his face? Oh no, it's not.
- 45:14It's Bogart, who says this is nothing. You should see him in
- 45:20a curry house. That's right, because we've got Kobe and Helmepo off to
- 45:25the side watching and just sort of like you get the feeling that maybe this
- 45:31is the eleventh steak he's eaten. I don't think it is, but you
- 45:35know what I mean, there's like a sense of we've been watching this guy
- 45:38chow down for a while. Now. A curry sounds so good to me
- 45:45right now, Oh my god, this sounds so good. So we then
- 45:50have Zeph come and open a bottle of wine and what he tries to do
- 45:58is destroy by chit chatting about fishing and about cooking and everything else, but
- 46:06it never actually works. And what it comes down to is a moment where
- 46:12Zeph tells him you're not gonna stop him, and he's too like he's grown.
- 46:17There comes a point where you just have to let go and let them
- 46:22make their own decisions. And of course Garp is not at all interested in
- 46:29this advice, but he says, you know, he's a special kid there.
- 46:32It's their time. There's a new generation, and you've got to give
- 46:38them room to breathe. And it's an interesting tack to take because like being
- 46:45like, oh, this kid, you know, he is a pirate,
- 46:47this is what he wants to do. Just let him live his dream whatever.
- 46:52That is really the way we've approached it in the script mostly, And
- 47:00to have Zep kind of just say, you know, we're the old fogies
- 47:06and it's time for us to sort of step aside and let them do their
- 47:08thing. It makes sense considering the reasoning he gave behind being willing to eat
- 47:14his own leg instead of like taking any food away from Sonjy, that he
- 47:20was like looking at Sanji as somebody who was going to go on to live
- 47:23the dream that he had imagined for himself. So being interested in like letting
- 47:30the new generation take the reins actually makes a lot of sense. But Garp
- 47:37is just not hearing it. And meanwhile, Kobe and Helmepo are off to
- 47:45have a drink. They're not supposed to because they're on duty. But Helmepo
- 47:49is just having Kobe like loosen up a little bit, which I don't think
- 47:52is actually a bad thing. There are times where somebody is like, you
- 47:58know, oh light, no, buddy, and it's they're clearly just a
- 48:01very bad influence, getting a person to do things against their better judgment.
- 48:07But with Kobe, it feels like he could stand to loosen up a little,
- 48:10like maybe they he is a bit too rigid, you know. It's
- 48:15not like, as somebody who has anxiety and often likes to follow the rules,
- 48:20I can get a little bit too hide bound. And I like the
- 48:23fact that he has a couple shots, but it doesn't like, it doesn't
- 48:28feel like he tells Helmepo about Garb's relationship with Loofy because he's drunk. He
- 48:35has those shots in quick succession and then says it immediately he hasn't had a
- 48:38chance to get drunk, so it doesn't feel like Helmepo's recommendation of loosening up
- 48:45is leading him down a bad path or anything. It seems like he's in
- 48:49control still, but he is just relaxing his standards a drop, which isn't
- 48:55always bad. But yeah, when he is talking to Holmepo about it and
- 49:04he's like, ah, that's his grandson. Howmepa's like, wow, that
- 49:08is super not what I thought you were going to say. But all right,
- 49:14I mean the kid with a straw hat in him, And then the
- 49:16bartenders like straw hat kid, Oh yeah, we had him here because apparently
- 49:22the memo has not gone out to the staff to not say shit about this
- 49:27kid. It should have. I'm a little disappointed in you, Zef,
- 49:30for not making certain that everybody was on the same page here. But they
- 49:36get the info they need and this leads to Garb telling everybody to get ready
- 49:43to head out for the islands, and you see Zef kind of panicking a
- 49:50little because like he was really hoping they were just gonna not know where to
- 49:53head and we could sort of end things here. But they got the info
- 49:58from somewhere and I wonder if he knew who it was, if they would
- 50:00be punished for it or not. But okay, so let's go back to
- 50:07Arlong's area. We got this like kind of weird carnival area where there's like
- 50:15games and stuff, and there's a bar that has a big sign that says
- 50:19Shark Attack and what's his name? Fishmouth is like drinking booze and spitting out
- 50:27and doing one of those like kind of fire breathing type things. It's funny
- 50:30because the way that he is, the way that he shoots the the booze
- 50:38out, it's like bullets almos. It's really weird, but I thought it
- 50:44looked cool. Oh sorry, No, the bar is named it says Ghost
- 50:49Train, So it's got like the parts of a carnival, but it's not
- 50:53actually like there's a ride in there anymore. I wonder what this is supposed
- 50:59to be. Was this meant to be like a tourist attraction that they repurposed
- 51:04or were they because like it, you know what I'm saying, you guys,
- 51:08It doesn't actually look like this was a carnival and they like invaded and
- 51:15made it into something else. It looks like it was already being used for
- 51:21something else, and they just happened to have shown up the part where ar
- 51:27Along is set up with his chair like a throne. It looks like it
- 51:30used to be an area for like a merry go round maybe something like that.
- 51:38So this is when Nami comes in to give him the tribute that she
- 51:45was able to collect, but it wasn't the full thing, And there's an
- 51:50explosion and it's a weird, like I think somebody maybe just fired a gun
- 51:57to get his attention, because I thought it was gonna signal the beginning of
- 52:00an attack, but instead it's that rat faced marine who is being paid off
- 52:07by Arlong, and in this scene he demands more money than they agreed to,
- 52:13but later on, after being threatened, some is willing to settle for
- 52:17what was originally agreed. So this we then go into the flashback with Arlong
- 52:29and Bell Mayer, and as soon as she is threatened, Nami and her
- 52:34sister bust out of the like hiding place under the floor, and Nami is
- 52:42saying to her, why didn't you just lie just tell him, and she
- 52:46says, because you are my daughters, and I will never deny that.
- 52:52And I felt like you guys remember probably if you listen to my coverage of
- 52:59the anime, how frustrated I was with this scene because I felt like her
- 53:04death was so preventable, and I was there was a real sense that if
- 53:09she had lied then she would have been spared. But I like the way
- 53:15this scene has done better because you really feel like whether or not she said
- 53:22I have two daughters, Arlong was gonna find them and he was going to
- 53:29make her pay either way. So her choosing not to deny her daughters it
- 53:37is easier for me to stomach because it felt like she was screwed either way
- 53:43and she knew it, and she just decided to do the thing in the
- 53:45moment that was like just and good for her daughters, like in an abstract
- 53:52way, Whereas in the anime, I really felt like she should have lied
- 54:00because it seemed like if she had, things would have gone a different way.
- 54:05There isn't that sense in the scene. In the live action, it
- 54:07feels like things would have gone this way whether she lied or not, so
- 54:12she may as well make sure to say the truth before she's killed, Whereas
- 54:21the anime, I was just sort of like, it feels like she's just
- 54:23putting the principle above being there for her daughters, like choosing to state yes,
- 54:31that they are my daughters and putting that on more of a pedestal than
- 54:37actually continuing to live and care for them, which I feel like is objectively
- 54:42much more important than whether or not you deny them to a pirate king who
- 54:47has you at gunpoint. Like I just I really it was obvious from the
- 54:54way that everybody was reacting to the episode in the chat, and I think
- 55:01I did a joint with Gabby on that, and I think that Gabby joined
- 55:06me that most people were really affected by this, But I just found myself
- 55:12annoyed, and I was glad to see that here they they managed to like
- 55:20really nail the situation and make it feel like ultimately she was going down either
- 55:28way, and it was just the way she went down that she was going
- 55:30to get to choose. So, yeah, she says to our along is
- 55:35this is enough to pay for my two girls? And he says, do
- 55:38you know what you're saying? And she's like, yeah, I fucking do.
- 55:44And so after she tells them both to be good, she's sorry she
- 55:51wasn't a better mother. She stands up and turns to him and he just
- 55:57shoots her in the chest and she goes down. We don't actually see her
- 56:01get shot. The last thing she says is I love you girls. And
- 56:08when we come back to the present, even Arlong says about her she was
- 56:13brave. I will give her that. And yeah, this is when we
- 56:19come to the present. In the moment with the crew being told this story,
- 56:24Sanji is sniffling and teary eyed and just trying to cover it up a
- 56:29little bit. And I just really like that aspect of it. I feel
- 56:31like they're giving them all, like especially Sonji. Though Sonji's getting more characterization
- 56:38than the others. And Zoro. I understand that a friend of mine said
- 56:45that some people felt he was a little bit too flat the actor. It
- 56:50has been working for me, but I could see what they mean, especially
- 56:54in contrast to the way that Sanji feels like already pretty. He just feels
- 57:00a little bit more interesting as a character than Zoro does. So at this
- 57:09point, Lufy stands up and he looks really confused, and I couldn't tell.
- 57:17I think that the thing that is happening here is that he has heard
- 57:23something so terrible about Nami working for the guy who did this to this girl
- 57:31and Nammy herself, that he feels as if this is the confirmation he needed
- 57:39that maybe Nami is not a good person, like he kept trying to believe.
- 57:45And it's a shame because, like, you know, you want him
- 57:51to maintain hope. But there's a sense of like, maybe I was wrong
- 57:54as he gets up and goes outside, and eventually he says something like I'm
- 58:01tired of hearing about Nami from other people. But it takes a little bit
- 58:07to get there. He's outside for a bit here with with Zorro, and
- 58:13the first thing he says is she was just a kid. But Zorro is
- 58:17not willing to let her off the hook and is like, dude, she's
- 58:22a grown woman now and she has made her choice. She's doing what she
- 58:27do. She told you to leave Loofy, and Lufy looks at Zoro and
- 58:34says, so did you, and follows this up with I know she's not
- 58:42one of our along's crew, the same way that I knew you weren't going
- 58:45to kill me when I cut you down from that cross, and the same
- 58:47way that I knew about Usap and Sanji. I just know that she's good,
- 58:53and we get the scene of her when she's little going up to our
- 58:59Long and asking to join the crew and this deal that they wind up making.
- 59:06She shows him the map that she has made and he is genuinely impressed
- 59:09by it. He's like, oh shit, you can see it must be
- 59:14very hard to act when you've got so much makeup on. But you can
- 59:17really see like the admiration on his face and the fact that he's like,
- 59:22all right, then she's fucking something. There's an interesting situation here, actually,
- 59:32and he says, I killed your mother and now you want to come
- 59:36work for me, and he stands over her. I love how huge he
- 59:40looks. Why would you do that because you have something I want? And
- 59:50she says, I told Arlong i'd work for him on one condition that he
- 59:53let me buy back Cocoa Village, and he said he would if I could
- 1:00:00get one hundred million Barry. This is all happening because she's digging up the
- 1:00:06treasure that she buried at their mom's grave and her sister stumbled across it,
- 1:00:14so she's finally telling her the whole situation here, and is telling her in
- 1:00:22the middle of it, like I have the money, and now I can
- 1:00:23buy the freedom of the village and everybody in it. And then, of
- 1:00:29course, because Arlong had told her at sunrise bringing me the money, and
- 1:00:34I thought it was like, you know, I had forgotten exactly how this
- 1:00:37went. But when he says bring me the money at sunrise, and I
- 1:00:39was like, that's too much time. If somebody gives you this kind of
- 1:00:44like deadline, and it feels like there's a little bit too much wiggle room,
- 1:00:47it's because they want time to do something on their end. And this
- 1:00:53is when that fucking rat face Marine comes around the corner and is like,
- 1:01:00oh, well, well, well, look at all of this stolen shit.
- 1:01:06I think I'm going to have to confiscate this. And Nami's acting as
- 1:01:10they steal all of it. I mean, she is so good here at
- 1:01:16just being absolutely desperate, like completely losing her mind. And it's very clear
- 1:01:25that Arlong put them up to this. She knows that's what happened, like
- 1:01:30there's no doubt in her mind. And when we have a speech from Arlong
- 1:01:38about how the fishmen are the superior beings, which is actually a pretty solid
- 1:01:45speech. Sometimes these kinds of characters with their speechifying it can feel a little
- 1:01:50bit eye rolly and tedious, but he is really really riveting to watch,
- 1:01:54so I felt like this was actually well done. And this is when Namib
- 1:02:00begins to scream arlong and stab herself in the arm, and it's just so
- 1:02:04like guys, I like recoiled from the screen when she started to do this.
- 1:02:07It was really bad. And her hand gets stopped by Loofy and this
- 1:02:15is the point where things begin to be almost shot for shot like in the
- 1:02:19anime. And he's holding her hand and she says, I told you to
- 1:02:22get the hell out of here, and he says you did, and she
- 1:02:27says, you don't know anything that's going on here, and he says I
- 1:02:32don't and his like the whole expression that he has here. He is just
- 1:02:40waiting for her to explain. He is so trusting that there is more to
- 1:02:47this story and that he wants, you know what I mean, like the
- 1:02:51whole thing. And she finally says, Loofy, help me, and he
- 1:03:01says, of course I will, and he takes his hat off and puts
- 1:03:07it on her head and he says of course I will louder and then yells
- 1:03:13of course I will. To the skies as he like does a fist pump,
- 1:03:16a double fist pump, and it's a uh it's interesting because like in
- 1:03:23the sub which I watched right after this episode, I he's when he does
- 1:03:32the like fist to the sky moment. The sub says that he says damn
- 1:03:39right, which I actually kind of prefer to. Of course I will a
- 1:03:45little bit, but I also understand why they had why they changed it here,
- 1:03:52you know, because it doesn't quite feel like Loofy for the way they've
- 1:03:55set up his character in the show. So he walks away from her very
- 1:04:01slowly. It's a great bit in the dark, you know, on this
- 1:04:05like little stretch of road. And as he's walking away, the camera pulls
- 1:04:11back and we see Sanjy's smoking. We see Zoro lounging with his sword.
- 1:04:17I think he's sitting on the edge of like a stone wall, and Usub
- 1:04:23sort of curled in on himself, sitting on the ground, and Lufy says,
- 1:04:28let's go, and they all say right at the same time, straight
- 1:04:31out of the anime, the characters in the same panels in it same thing,
- 1:04:35And they look up and they see all this fire and they realize that
- 1:04:41Arlong has already started to attack the village. And that is the end of
- 1:04:45the episode. So the next one, guys, next one, and that's
- 1:04:50the end of season one, and I'm so sad. All Right, I
- 1:04:56gotta wrap. Thank you guys again, so much for listening. Gabby,
- 1:04:59thank you for commissioning. I hope you're enjoying. Until next time to the
- 1:05:03loom. Motherfuckers. That was an unspoiled networkst
