- 0:00I have a song that I finished. It took me 20 years.
- 0:03What? Yeah.
- 0:04I have a song that I wrote that the first part was the MBD was
- 0:08sitting next to me. He loved the first part.
- 0:10Then whatever I did for the next 20 years, and I'll call him
- 0:15Matra, could you come over? He lives a few houses away from
- 0:17me. I think I got it and I don't
- 0:21think so. 20 years and then I finished it.
- 0:24Then Shulam Lambert grabbed it and recorded it and became one
- 0:27of his biggest. None of your business.
- 0:33Oshi, none of your business, Michael.
- 0:35It's the None of Your Business podcast hosted by Michael and
- 0:38Oshi. Guys, welcome back to another
- 0:40incredible episode of the None of Your Business podcast.
- 0:44I'm your host, Michael Greenfield joined with me as my
- 0:46Co host, Oshi Schwartz. And today we have the guest of
- 0:49guests, the creator of so many things in my life, in Oshi's
- 0:54life, and in your life, None other than Rabiasi Green.
- 0:59Welcome to the program. Thank you.
- 1:00Can I just ask one? Can I come back next week?
- 1:04You enjoying it already so much? You want another introduction.
- 1:08You like it, right? It's very nice.
- 1:10You, the 2 of you have a very beautiful energy and it just it
- 1:14works. I really appreciate you saying
- 1:16that. So one of the ways that we get
- 1:17our listeners and our audience, you know, immediately known to
- 1:21who the guest is, we have this little segment that we like to
- 1:24call ChatGPT, said what? OK.
- 1:27You're familiar with ChatGPT. Sure.
- 1:29You've been using it at all? Recently.
- 1:32Good. Yeah, 10 in the morning.
- 1:33I I really got the first good shot out of it there.
- 1:36I couldn't believe it. Did you ever use ChatGPT to look
- 1:39yourself up? No.
- 1:41So this is going to be fun. OK.
- 1:43OK, great, because the reality is and everyone listening and
- 1:46everyone watching knows you don't need an introduction, but
- 1:49it is kind of fun to see what Chachi PT says about you and
- 1:53from their perspective. So you are the composer, hit
- 1:56maker, and secret sauce behind half of our favorite Jewish
- 1:59songs. And that's the setting that it
- 2:01says and it actually writes on the bottom.
- 2:04He writes songs that make grown men weep, wedding bands rich and
- 2:08spiritual seekers rethink their Spotify playlist.
- 2:14OK, nicely done Chatri. That's a surprise, OK.
- 2:16Yeah. Yeah, so, so I'll tell you, it
- 2:18starts off also with he's got more hits than a Kugel at a
- 2:22kiddish, over 700 songs composed.
- 2:26I don't even know how Chatri PD would know about that.
- 2:28That's a very old. Very old.
- 2:30How many songs then? I've recorded Brooksham over
- 2:331050 song recorded. I actually want to know more
- 2:37about the songs that you didn't compose.
- 2:39That's right. So that's when you can ask me
- 2:41for what my favorite composition is.
- 2:44Other than your own. Is the answer the one that I
- 2:45didn't write yet? That's that's the we were we had
- 2:49a favorite conversation earlier. So I just wanted to continue on
- 2:53the favorite. Back to what chat GPD says about
- 2:55you. I actually didn't read this yet.
- 2:57I asked Stefan to print it and it's.
- 2:59I'm reading it live so you'll please excuse me if I'm saying
- 3:01certain things that are. You know, no, no issues.
- 3:04It's just shot GPD whatever, whatever you.
- 3:06It's their opinion. Yes, yes, it's their opinion of
- 3:09the facts. Exactly right.
- 3:11It's the new way of life. He's basically the Jewish Quincy
- 3:14Jones he composed for Avron Fried, Mordecai, Ben David,
- 3:17Daddy Yakushwaki and even colour box style artist.
- 3:20The man writes for everyone but somehow never repeats himself
- 3:23unless you count his key changes.
- 3:27OK, I. Know what that means?
- 3:28Neither do I it. It doesn't really makes, it
- 3:31doesn't make sense, but that's OK.
- 3:33OK it doesn't have to make sense.
- 3:35It's ChatGPT. It's like you know, it's still
- 3:37no formal training. This one is surprising me as I'm
- 3:39reading this right now. No formal training, just define
- 3:42Wi-Fi. The man never studied
- 3:43composition but hears music in his sleep and once said he he
- 3:47composed this song while brushing his teeth.
- 3:49Most people get plaque. He gets platinum.
- 3:52Is that something that happened to you?
- 3:53No, never my live. OK.
- 3:54So that's nice. Thanks for the for For Nothing,
- 4:00Tanya Anavim Adhurava Certified Soul Bangers.
- 4:03Yes, yeah, yeah. What else comes to your mind
- 4:06with soul bangers? Are those three good options to
- 4:10choose from? Like to highlight some of your
- 4:12your big hits? You can't I I don't I don't like
- 4:18I don't like the word big hits. So, you know, I don't like to to
- 4:22focus in. We discuss if we had a
- 4:23conversation about favourites, it goes into favourites.
- 4:26I I'm right now working on songs which I like better than all of
- 4:30those songs together. Wow, so.
- 4:32What's your vote on favourites? I will vote on that favorite is
- 4:35my is the favorite is my least favorite word in the English
- 4:38language. OK, I guess we're coming more
- 4:41from a standpoint of what was well received in the
- 4:44communities, like what people are attracted to in their, you
- 4:47know, no, I'm actually asking those songs, no.
- 4:49I'm actually asking what his. Favorite is as far as his.
- 4:51Someone taught this to me a while ago and I shared this on
- 4:53the podcast many episodes ago and I said someone we were in a
- 4:56restaurant and someone asked what's your favorite music to
- 4:58listen to? And I said it depends where I
- 5:01am, right? So so I guess it depends where
- 5:03you are also in terms of what your favorite, It's not just
- 5:05about what the community looks at the favorite.
- 5:06I actually genuinely want to know what his.
- 5:08Favorite is. Yeah, sure.
- 5:09What do you want to go to sleep with?
- 5:10What do you want to wake up? What's the wedding song?
- 5:11What's you're fluent in English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Aramaic, and
- 5:16emotion? Wow.
- 5:18OK, I believe that the man's lyrics are deep enough to be
- 5:20taught in seminary and catchy enough for a 5 year old nephew
- 5:22to scream in the backseat. OK.
- 5:27That's pretty wide range right there.
- 5:28That's great. One thing that I don't think
- 5:30many people know about you is that you are the founder of
- 5:32Gerry Medics because apparently he needed a side hustle from
- 5:35composing the soundtrack of Heaven.
- 5:37I have a partner, though I'm not one of the one of them.
- 5:40Yeah, so one of the founders, your Co founder actually is
- 5:42someone who I know well, and he's also in the music world.
- 5:45I know he had some great hits. Heshi Rubin, AKA Harold, AKA the
- 5:50man with the office. He always had a cool office on
- 5:53the top, you know, overseeing the pit.
- 5:54Yes, he did. And the rest of it honestly, is
- 5:59stuff that are going to come out as we speak.
- 6:01But I, I, I want to go back to the composing stuff, you know,
- 6:05so it says here, you know, you talk about what you didn't
- 6:08compose over 1000 songs that you compose, but many songs that you
- 6:12didn't compose. I'm curious about that.
- 6:15What goes on in your world, like how many songs you have that you
- 6:18have not composed? What happens?
- 6:19It just sits there with you. It it you created?
- 6:21When you say compose, you mean recorded.
- 6:23I can no. Just in your head you have a
- 6:24song, you write it down, you no What happens.
- 6:26No, it doesn't work that way. Please tell me what happens.
- 6:28That's all I want to. Know so it's a very, very
- 6:31intent, intent laden intent full practice.
- 6:35It doesn't things don't fall in. You have these stories about
- 6:38these rebels that were walking along in the woods and something
- 6:40fell. Let me tell you don't think that
- 6:42fell in that fell on me in the woods was not a song.
- 6:45So you understand in other words, it's usually there's an
- 6:49order somebody requests a song and then there's some kind of an
- 6:55interview. I figure out where what that's a
- 6:59separate discussion and then I sit down and I work and work and
- 7:03work and work and can sometimes I'm lucky right away.
- 7:06Sometimes it can take. I have a song that I finished.
- 7:09It took me 20 years. What?
- 7:11Yeah, I have a song that I wrote that the first part was the MBD
- 7:16was sitting next to me. He's one of the guys in the,
- 7:18you're probably in the in the ChatGPT thing.
- 7:21And he loved the first part. And then I was and I wanted to
- 7:25continue and I continued and whatever I did for the next 20
- 7:28years, and I'll call him Matra. Could you come over?
- 7:32He lives a few houses away from me.
- 7:34I think I got it and I don't think so. 20 years.
- 7:40Wow. And then I finished it and
- 7:41Shulam Lamba grabbed it and recorded it and became one of
- 7:44his biggest what? Was that?
- 7:46It's called Kurtz Mehheimer. Mama Eli.
- 7:50Wow. Yeah.
- 7:53OK, I love it. You will when you're when you're
- 7:56going to hear it, I think. But I I jump into the chat chief
- 7:59PT, but it when we ended strong with Jerry medics, the minister.
- 8:03Well, she and I are in the healthcare business.
- 8:05OK, You know, she's not as much as a music fan in general as I
- 8:09am. I'm probably going to blush the
- 8:11entire time while you're here because as you're sitting here.
- 8:15What can we do to make Oshie blush?
- 8:17That's the exact question I wanted to get to.
- 8:19OK, I want to turn to she think she.
- 8:21How do you know him? How do?
- 8:23What do you know about Yasi Green?
- 8:24He's not. I don't.
- 8:25Want to know him? I don't think there is a person
- 8:27my age or even a little younger than me, but from the age 25 and
- 8:31all that, it doesn't know who Yasi Green is.
- 8:34He is just a a staple name in our extended communities.
- 8:38Everybody across the globe that has any connection to Judaism
- 8:42knows the name. They may not know how you look,
- 8:43they may not know much about you, but they've heard of you,
- 8:46they've heard of your music, they they've heard of your
- 8:48talents. I actually don't know 100% if
- 8:52you're more of a singer, composer, a little bit of if
- 8:54you're a musician. I know that you're involved in
- 8:58the music industry in a very, very big way.
- 9:00You've been impactful for decades, so you've definitely
- 9:05left your mark on the music industry and you did a very big
- 9:08service to our community. We have so many songs that
- 9:11connects everybody and keeps us all unified, so it's a beautiful
- 9:13thing. So that's about the extent of
- 9:16how much I know about you. I happen to also know that
- 9:18you're involved in the healthcare industry.
- 9:20I don't know to what extent that we've never really had direct
- 9:23involvement, but I know that you're very successful in that
- 9:26field as well. So I'm very curious how you
- 9:27juggle both. How are you able to build a
- 9:31pretty big business? Very Medics is not a family by
- 9:33the night company. They're a pretty big company and
- 9:36also have such a successful career in in the music industry.
- 9:40Those are two full time jobs on on on its own.
- 9:42So the fact that you're able to do both so well and on such a
- 9:45global stage, I may add, is very impressive.
- 9:47So I'm very curious about actually you, your history, how
- 9:50you started when you actually be knew that you had this this
- 9:54talent from music and started putting it into practice.
- 9:56Like I'm curious how this all began.
- 9:58Like where's the beginning of all of this?
- 10:00That's what I'm curious about, yeah.
- 10:02So do you do you? So you're asking me for the the
- 10:04actual, the first song, the first writing, the first example
- 10:08of writing that that happened? Let's.
- 10:10Start with that. That's a great place.
- 10:12I have to. I don't.
- 10:13I don't, I want, I want to understand your question because
- 10:15music, I guess I love music. Since I was a child, did I think
- 10:18that I had any, any connection, unique connection to music more
- 10:22so than anybody else? Definitely not.
- 10:23I don't come from a place where we didn't have a lot of
- 10:27confidence. There was not there was not a
- 10:29lot of confidence building. Most of our confidence building
- 10:32came later on in life. We didn't have like today,
- 10:35everybody is constantly working, they're being therapeutically
- 10:40helped along. And so I mean, I don't know to
- 10:42what to, to what to what a veil, you know, whether it works or
- 10:44not. But we kind of didn't have that.
- 10:46So it was a total shock when when I came up with my first, my
- 10:53first melody. And it was so it was so
- 10:57embraced. I was, I didn't even understand
- 10:59what it meant because I'd never gone to a concert.
- 11:01I didn't know what it means when you do have, when you.
- 11:03And what happens if so? If you have a good song, what
- 11:04happens then? What do people do with the song?
- 11:07I'd never seen a show. You know, it's you.
- 11:10I think maybe because the two of you come from a world where all
- 11:14of this thing had been already worked out.
- 11:17There were shows, there were concerts, there were albums.
- 11:19There were people who There were fan, there was a fan, there was
- 11:22fandom. None of this stuff was around
- 11:24when I when I was starting out. My parents didn't.
- 11:28My parent, my mother, Alejo Schulman was a beautiful,
- 11:30wonderful, incredible, classy lady.
- 11:33Anna Hasidic lady. At the same time she loved
- 11:36classical music and that's kind of the music that that there was
- 11:40nothing else around. By the way, I tell everybody,
- 11:43it's very strange. Sadly, the the world Karlbach, I
- 11:48don't think I heard before, before I got married.
- 11:50I don't think I've even heard the two syllables Karlbach
- 11:54together. Later on in life I got to know
- 11:57him and I learned something about about harvest his role
- 12:01about love of of of Eden that that's a different story.
- 12:04That's there's nothing to do with music.
- 12:06My relationship with with him was it was just AI have a couple
- 12:10of things that he told me that that he that I heard from him.
- 12:15I think I'm the only one that I heard from him and so on, which
- 12:17was which had a tremendous impact on my life.
- 12:19And so I had nothing to do with music, though.
- 12:21So your question as to you know, I when, when, when the person
- 12:25that I wrote this song for jumped up and said, I this is it
- 12:28this I'm going to take this. We're going to go to New York
- 12:31and where I was, I was in London at the time.
- 12:33I learned the London and he says, we're going to we're going
- 12:35to put this on the show and the show.
- 12:37What is he? Talking about how?
- 12:38How old were you then? I was exactly 18 years old.
- 12:40OK. And where were you?
- 12:41I was in London, OK, I was in London and I was miserable.
- 12:47Isn't everybody in London miserable?
- 12:49I'm glad. Am I glad that you said it.
- 12:51So. OK, so I was hoping for Ashy to
- 12:53say it. Let me tell you something.
- 12:54I I can go on for an hour about this, but everybody should
- 12:57remember that. Oh, she's the one who said it.
- 12:59I'm just, I'm just elaborating. Water in here and.
- 13:02Thank you. Yes, I was going to ask.
- 13:04You. Yes, please.
- 13:05Please. I mean, it is raining a lot in
- 13:07London, you know. Maine.
- 13:08So the environment doesn't help, you know, set the mood, that's
- 13:12for sure. There was a driving on the wrong
- 13:14side of the road. Someone could probably tell
- 13:16them. Yes, I failed by driving test a
- 13:18number of times. But anyway, so, so to get back
- 13:23to your question, to your answer to your question, to answer your
- 13:26question, so there was one incredible artist around at the
- 13:31time. His name was Igal Salek.
- 13:33Igal Salek had had came up with this idea of putting kids very
- 13:39good looking kids, kids with great voices, kids with great
- 13:43personalities because he would speak to them, he would
- 13:45interview them on stage. So it wasn't just it was he had
- 13:48a real show because everybody who was, you know, they came
- 13:52from families that did instill tremendous amount of confidence
- 13:55in these kids. And so he he put out an album, I
- 13:58think the first album and then he put out the second album and
- 14:01I listened to it and it was wow. It was something that combined
- 14:06all of classical music and, and European music and Broadway.
- 14:10And it didn't sound anything like like like the Alta Rebbe
- 14:15songs, you know? And it was very, very, very
- 14:18Yiddish, very Jewish, very new. And, and every song that was
- 14:22every text had a message. You know, we grew up with a lot
- 14:24of texts that didn't mean a lot to us until we got older, like,
- 14:27you know, Ranunut Saadiq and Basham Legend.
- 14:29OK. I mean, at this stage, you
- 14:32probably doesn't have much meaning the, the, these things
- 14:36you're going to come back to when you're much, much older,
- 14:38you're going to, in the beginning, you're going to go
- 14:40for the, the strange texts, right?
- 14:44So he came up with all these strange texts and he, he was a
- 14:47Navi teacher. He taught Navi in a, in a, in a,
- 14:51in a elementary school. So he knew Navi very well and he
- 14:54would write songs on Navi talking about Shiah and about
- 14:58prophecy and which was something that didn't exist.
- 15:03And as a matter of fact, I remember MBD the first time that
- 15:05I saw a show when I realized already what a show is.
- 15:08And MBD at that time was Mordechai Werdeger.
- 15:11It was not MBD, ladies and gentlemen, Mordechai Werdeger.
- 15:14And he was opening up for the kids that were getting ready,
- 15:17getting dressed and the, and the place was full, thousands of
- 15:20people waiting for the kids and they would say no, no, they
- 15:24would like get it. No.
- 15:26And it was like, I would be embarrassed for him because he
- 15:29was trying to launch his career. And he was the opening act for
- 15:32for London. I mean, he became the biggest
- 15:35act that we ever had, you know, but so I'm talking about in
- 15:38those years. Anyway, this eagle solid was
- 15:41some strange reason. I was, I'm not going to say some
- 15:44strange reason. It was obviously, but shared.
- 15:46I I went to yeshiva every night and I thought it was winter and
- 15:51I lived in an attic of a relative of mine.
- 15:54They had had 99 kids downstairs and they had an old attic full
- 15:58of boxes and, you know, one of those old attics and and the.
- 16:03Ones where you put the American cousin.
- 16:04Where you put all the exact? Well, yeah.
- 16:07And they had like a bed in the corner.
- 16:08And that's where I, that's where I slept.
- 16:09And so I would come in at at 8 O clock at night.
- 16:12What would I do? There was nothing to read.
- 16:14There was no Khalil of a house. There was nothing really nothing
- 16:17to watch. I went upstairs to my room and I
- 16:19sat on my bed and it wasn't a very, you know, London to begin
- 16:23with was a difficult time anyway.
- 16:27And, and, and I started clearing up the boxes once and I saw
- 16:30under all the boxes there was an old piano.
- 16:34Well, you know, with, with, with keys that look like this, you
- 16:36know, like, you know those keys, you know.
- 16:39The dead keys. Those were monkeys, dead
- 16:41monkeys. Higher monkey is swollen because
- 16:43they didn't take the water off when they, when they spilled
- 16:45water on and so on, you know, and I began with one finger 22
- 16:50bang around and I came up with a, with an, with something a, a,
- 16:55a like a formulaic melody, which I, I was, I would bang out.
- 17:01And then what happened was this woman of the house was very
- 17:05sensitive to me. She realized what's going on.
- 17:07She realized that I'm coming home at night and what the hell
- 17:09am I doing up there? So she did something, she went
- 17:13and she got the ego salad's phone number and she called him
- 17:17up and she said, Eagle, I need a favor from you.
- 17:21Who are you? You're asking me favors.
- 17:23He didn't do that. He was listening to her.
- 17:25And he says, look, she says, look, I have a relative here
- 17:28from from America and he's here and he he comes home from
- 17:31yeshiva at night. He doesn't know.
- 17:34I think he's also musical. I hear him banging around on on
- 17:37the on the keyboard over there down the piano.
- 17:40Maybe you want to come over here and just be his friend.
- 17:44That's bold. So wonderful.
- 17:46I was just thinking, I always tell.
- 17:47Beautiful. I always, I always tell people,
- 17:50could you imagine if somebody would call me up or, or she, you
- 17:52or hims imagine that. Hi Michael, could you do me a
- 17:56favor? I have a, I have a relative here
- 17:57from London and he's like, he's a 1718 year old boy.
- 18:01And he said maybe you want to come over and be his friend.
- 18:04You'd say sure, oh, I'm going to drop everything immediately.
- 18:07I'll be over in 5 minutes. Right?
- 18:08He did. He came over.
- 18:10Yeah. I hear the door open up and I
- 18:12and I and, and the lady says to me, y'all see?
- 18:16Did you come down there? You have a guest, You have a
- 18:18guest. And I walk down and I say, how
- 18:20did I know what he looked like? Because on the cover of of the
- 18:23albums in those days the the albums were big and you had
- 18:26pictures and you would study those pictures.
- 18:28And it was like a record. It was.
- 18:29A it was a record and you would you would that's where you got
- 18:31all the information or you read every single word and you looked
- 18:35at every face and every child that was there.
- 18:37You imagined yourself being that child.
- 18:39I mean, that was it. That was the entire culture that
- 18:42a Jewish boy had. Forget.
- 18:44There was no Hask. There was no camps.
- 18:46We didn't go to camp. You know, it's and I see him
- 18:50standing there and he says, hey, Yossi, come on down, let's go
- 18:53for a drive. And from then we became
- 18:55incredible, incredible friends. And he found out that I went to
- 18:58Shiva and Schlesinger's, which was yeshiva serrama.
- 19:01The rush Shiva is still alive. God bless him.
- 19:03He shouldn't live through. He's a Talmud of, of, of I think
- 19:06either Shimishka or one of those he's you talking about.
- 19:09He's can I know her? He's on the other side of, of,
- 19:13of of this century. Can I know her and he's he said
- 19:17he regards recently his his a nickel his ear a nickel lives a
- 19:20couple of hours away from me and he went to Pesach and he asked
- 19:24by the way, I have a neighbor who says that he that he learned
- 19:26in your Shiva says really what's his name tells him my name.
- 19:29He says sure, tell him send him my best regards.
- 19:32He remembers. You he, he remembers me.
- 19:34It's unbelievable. I was and, and and he would,
- 19:38what he would do is he would say, what are you doing in the
- 19:40evenings? I said, well, I don't know why I
- 19:43was not so kind by him. Most of the nights I'd come out
- 19:47at 8:00 from the yeshiva, it would be a car parked, the
- 19:50passenger door was open and he would be standing like that and
- 19:54he would say, you're coming literally like that.
- 19:56That was his personality anyway. He was a tremendous developer
- 20:01of, of, of, of souls. He was he.
- 20:03Didn't even know who you were at the.
- 20:05No. No clue.
- 20:06Nothing. There was nothing to know about.
- 20:07Nothing. I had to cross the pairs and.
- 20:10What moment did you guys start realizing that there's something
- 20:12there with the? Because the conversation we had
- 20:16a a small podcast. In the car.
- 20:20Exactly, that's what it was like.
- 20:21Of course, that's what it was like with the real conversation.
- 20:23And he took me home to his house and he was talking.
- 20:25I would eat with the, with his, at his table many times already
- 20:28dinner with the other bunch of little kids and, and, and one
- 20:31day he disappeared for two weeks.
- 20:33And I became, you have to understand, I, I, I got hooked
- 20:36on him because this was my, this was my program.
- 20:39I came over from yeshiva and most of the time I would go to
- 20:42him. I still don't understand it how
- 20:44that made sense today. It would it would be frowned
- 20:46upon. What does this mean?
- 20:48This person is taking you home to his family and you know, and
- 20:53once he disappeared for two weeks, he did disappeared.
- 20:57He didn't come for two weeks. I thought maybe he's.
- 20:59He's done. With you, that's it.
- 21:00There was no phones. You have to understand you
- 21:02couldn't find out information. Information was you basically
- 21:06went there and you came in person.
- 21:08He wasn't there and I didn't know where he lived.
- 21:10I used to take me by car, so and I had no time.
- 21:12I had no claims to his relationship, you know, and two
- 21:16weeks went by and that's when I did this banging more and more.
- 21:23And he comes home and he says and he calls the house on a
- 21:26Friday and he asks if he can speak to me.
- 21:28Yes. Would you come over to for, for
- 21:31lunch? Shab, this Shabbos, I'm sorry.
- 21:33I was away for two weeks. I was in New York.
- 21:35I'm trying to work out my next group of shows.
- 21:38Sure. I was excited.
- 21:39I went and I I went there for I went to the meal.
- 21:43I said, where were you? What happened to you?
- 21:44He says, well, I went to sign up with Nagin Orchestra, which was
- 21:49then the only first Jewish successful orchestra.
- 21:53And I, I, I signed a, a contract with four shows.
- 21:58It was a Hanukkah. It was Musta Shabba Sunday
- 22:00night, Musta Shabba Sunday night, four nights.
- 22:03These councils would sell out the day you would and, and, and
- 22:06don't forget, there was no, there was no social media there.
- 22:10There there was one ad you would put in the Jewish press older
- 22:14show there would be 10 or 11,000 seats all sold out you.
- 22:17Would have to call in to. You would have buy a ticket, no
- 22:19call in, call in came that was already sophisticated.
- 22:22You'd have to go to Focus Electronic.
- 22:24That was the place. Wow, where was that on 14?
- 22:26Was on the corner, I'm sorry. There was the corner of 13th and
- 22:28and 46th St. Wow.
- 22:31Interesting. And you and they had this
- 22:32envelope. Today I'm assuming, or Thursday
- 22:34it's done because this paper comes out Tuesday and sold out.
- 22:36Sold out and people would pay cash and he he would have to put
- 22:39the in into there's no credit cards, right?
- 22:42Do you understand that? So it was envelopes.
- 22:44These are the $100 tickets. These are the $50 tickets.
- 22:46And they'll give you yourself. You paid for it on the spot.
- 22:48Exactly that that was the and and so he tells me I'm I'm I'm
- 22:52very happy, but at the same time I'm very down.
- 22:55I said what? Why are you down?
- 22:57He says. Because they told me on the
- 22:59condition I've done this already this my third year, they want to
- 23:02hear new songs. They don't want the same songs.
- 23:05You have hits, but you got to bring the material.
- 23:08And so and I, we stayed together, Thomas Shabas and
- 23:11after Abdullah, and he's sitting on one of these chairs in the
- 23:14corner and I see he's, he's got a sour face and, and I'm
- 23:18sitting, he has a piano now. I love to sit next to pianos.
- 23:21I never, I never had a piano until I got married.
- 23:24My wife bought me my first piano, so I just would sit on
- 23:28the on the piano bench. Like if you had over here 2
- 23:31chairs and a piano bench with a piano, I would sit here with my
- 23:35back. I for some strange, strange
- 23:38reason, always felt like I wanted to be next to the piano.
- 23:41So I would always sit there a little piano, not, not one of
- 23:43these pianos, you know, and, and, and he's complaining.
- 23:47He says, you know, yes, you're so musical.
- 23:49If you would have songs, then I would all my all my problems
- 23:53would be solid. He says you never tried to to
- 23:56write a song or something. I said write a song.
- 23:58I didn't even use the word write a song.
- 24:01Write a song is a sophisticated way of saying composition.
- 24:04I don't know what to make. You never made a song, you know,
- 24:08So I said no, but you never tried.
- 24:10Come on, you, you the the lady told me you're what are you
- 24:13banging around on the piano? I said, you want me to I'm I'm
- 24:16embarrassed. Don't be embarrassed.
- 24:17I turned around and I began to play this this melody.
- 24:22You know when star was born. I'm telling you he jumped up
- 24:27from the chair and he ran over to me ran over to the to the
- 24:31storm Shank took out a homish and he opened up partials by he
- 24:35impartials by he by the Ani bevoy me Padanaram Maisie Olai
- 24:40Rocco remember where where Yaakov is is apologizing to
- 24:44Yosef that that that I couldn't your mother.
- 24:47I couldn't take care of her. I'm asking you to take care of
- 24:50me even though I couldn't get into Israel.
- 24:52I couldn't get her to her and she passed away right outside
- 24:55and I had to bury her. This is a very sad.
- 24:57I remember as a child, this is we, we used to get very
- 25:00emotional and the big Rashi and the Rashi says, don't worry that
- 25:04what's going to happen is in the end of time, Rahul is going to
- 25:08be on the on the path when the Jews are going to sadly be be
- 25:11sent away from Israel. They're going to stop off at
- 25:14her, at her grave and they're going to cry and she will cry
- 25:17along with them and call Barack, call baraman ishma nahi bahi
- 25:21samarim rakhmavaka Albania Mein Ali nacham kainen.
- 25:25And he is, I had no idea that words go with song, you know?
- 25:29And he started OK again, again and he started screaming.
- 25:33He became a Sergeant. Until that moment, our
- 25:36relationship was like, you know, again, again, do it again.
- 25:40I said, do it, do it again. Just no, no, stop from the
- 25:42beginning. Do it again.
- 25:43And he became like, like, you know, and I did it again and
- 25:46again and again. And he was, he was crouched on
- 25:48on his knees and he was thinking about the words called barama
- 25:50back and forth again. Slower, faster.
- 25:53No slower. He didn't know.
- 25:54He wanted, he wanted in a different beat.
- 25:58I did it in a beat of four and he wanted the beat of three.
- 26:01And he kept on telling me do it slower.
- 26:03He didn't realize that it's not slower or faster, just a
- 26:05different rhythm, a different timing.
- 26:07And I didn't know that either. You know, I kept on and so was
- 26:11born the song called Burama, which is a very big hit song
- 26:13today. That was your first that.
- 26:14Was my first song. And you made it on the fly with
- 26:17this gentleman on a piano in his house, and you barely know how
- 26:21to play at this. Point I still I still I still
- 26:24don't know how to play. That's not funny.
- 26:27I don't know how to play. I've seen you play quite.
- 26:30Good, I would love to not play how you not.
- 26:32Can I just tell you a vignette about this playing something I
- 26:36think you'll find interesting? I've performed on the piano.
- 26:39Notice I don't say play because I don't play piano.
- 26:42I perform on the piano basically in in probably every major venue
- 26:48in the world, whether it's the Paris Opera House or the Zurich,
- 26:54whatever. What's it called?
- 26:55The Ray? I forgot the the biggest the
- 26:57biggest opera houses. With chat chief PT, by the way,
- 27:00you can look up what it's called.
- 27:01Yeah, he's on it already, you see.
- 27:03Yes. Steph, he's already all.
- 27:05Over it and always there's a big piano, 9 foot grand piano.
- 27:09He's the funniest joke in the world. 9 foot grand, you know,
- 27:12costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
- 27:15And Green comes out on the side, I'm supposed to sit and I'm
- 27:20always looking. And I see in the, in the, in
- 27:22the, in the orchestra, there's a real pianist who never worked
- 27:26his whole life, 4050 years of practice, day and night.
- 27:29He gave up all kinds of sports to be there, to be at right?
- 27:33And, and, and I'm always feeling guilty.
- 27:34And when they have a moment, I walk over to the guys and
- 27:37listen. You're probably going to hear
- 27:39some strange stuff tonight on the piano.
- 27:41You're probably going to wonder what what's going on here?
- 27:45What is this a joke? Why is he why is that guy
- 27:47sitting in the front on the 9 foot grand?
- 27:50I said, I want you to know you're not going to understand
- 27:51it, but it's it's connections, OK?
- 27:57And I do this everywhere because I always have this, this this
- 28:00crazy feeling. These guys are working all their
- 28:03lives. And so I don't play the piano.
- 28:05Yeah. It comes naturally to you.
- 28:07Well, yeah, but. It's in your soul.
- 28:09I'm actually curious about that. Do you ever play the piano?
- 28:12I play the piano all the time, right?
- 28:13But I, I play it but I but I, I can't play piano, right?
- 28:17Yeah, anyway. Wow.
- 28:19So this is the beginning of the journey.
- 28:22This is where it this is where it happened.
- 28:25And the song is one of the biggest hits today.
- 28:27And he used that song in his concert.
- 28:29He oh boy, did he use that. Song.
- 28:31He used that song and that catapulted.
- 28:32Him as well. That that that got him the next
- 28:35set of concerts and it got him to the next.
- 28:37So if he was a smart man, he would have locked you in and
- 28:39licensed you at that point. Nobody thought thought like that
- 28:42in those days. Locked, licensed, none of that
- 28:44stuff, you know, So it was a very Jewish idea that we're not,
- 28:50you know, you know, MBD, you know, people ask me what's his
- 28:53Hiddish, you know, you know what the Hiddish of MBD is the real
- 28:56true essence of MBD. He's the first yid that
- 29:00performed with the microphone facing the audience.
- 29:03You know that our our stars, our performers, when we see them, we
- 29:09see the back of their talus. We don't really.
- 29:11We never had a guy facing an audience with the mic.
- 29:15He's the first person that turned around and faced an
- 29:18audience with the microphone, so that's how far.
- 29:20It wasn't just a song that he was singing.
- 29:21Yeah, also that he was. Connecting with you.
- 29:23Exactly. And the whole idea that that he
- 29:25faced 1000 people and no, no, he'd ever did that.
- 29:29No from he'd ever did that in those years.
- 29:32So he had to. That's why he's so many.
- 29:33Because he came father for a reason.
- 29:35He was a trailblazer. But these are the these are the
- 29:37reasons why is a trailblazer. People don't understand king.
- 29:40He's the king because he most of what we have in in this whole
- 29:44came from him really well today. It's it's sophisticated beyond
- 29:47beyond beyond. But anyway.
- 29:50I have to say you're saying but anyway, but you know, I'm
- 29:52getting chills as I'm hearing you speak.
- 29:56That song is obviously. Does that mean he likes it?
- 30:00I I can't, I don't know yet. He.
- 30:02Doesn't hate it. That song is obviously not only
- 30:04one of my favorite songs. I know I speak on behalf of
- 30:07everyone listening. That's their favorite song in
- 30:10many, many different ways, Meaning it's a favorite song to
- 30:13hear at certain times, certain, you know, during, you know,
- 30:16during the 9 days, during the three weeks, you know, what
- 30:18happens to be we're in the three weeks right now.
- 30:20To hear a story like that is very moving for me.
- 30:23I have to tell you, I'm, I'm emotional.
- 30:25I'm, I'm appreciating that story.
- 30:27I mean, I've learned to listen over the past 50 plus podcasts,
- 30:31but appreciating to listen and hearing such a story.
- 30:34I'm moved by it and it's really beautiful and just what a what a
- 30:37beginning. Yeah.
- 30:39I'm gonna strip gears from that. If if I may, I'm sorry.
- 30:42Give me, give me 5 more seconds I'm.
- 30:44I'm hearing the emotional part from you, but I know it's.
- 30:46Hard for you, but I want to get into.
- 30:47Because he needs help. Give me 5 more seconds.
- 30:49Yeah. He needs healthcare, yeah.
- 30:51No, no, he wants to be able to go to healthcare.
- 30:53No, I understand. I wanted to go to hell Give.
- 30:55Me a minute. Give me.
- 30:56Go ahead, go ahead, I. Just want 5 seconds.
- 30:58Sure, sure. Wow, that was absolutely
- 31:02beautiful. And I relive it.
- 31:04And by the way, you're, I, you know, I, I think I mentioned
- 31:06this to you earlier that one of the beauties of a, of a podcast
- 31:11for the person who's being interviewed, if he has Saiful,
- 31:15is that if he has a good interviewer, the interviewer
- 31:17brings out things, feelings that would not come out unless you
- 31:21get asked these kind of questions in this kind of a
- 31:23setting. So I'm also looking at OSHA and
- 31:25looking at you and, and kind of seeing the way you're reacting
- 31:29makes me realize what what what a gift that was.
- 31:32That was a gift from the wrench line.
- 31:33That first song is here. Take that's so beautiful.
- 31:36They can build a life with it. Before she gets so I'm sorry
- 31:39you. Planted a seed.
- 31:40You planted a seed and it grew in a blossom.
- 31:42Yeah, something beautiful. I said 5 seconds, but I'm a
- 31:44salesman. I sold you on the five seconds.
- 31:46Hopefully I can get you on a little bit more.
- 31:48I I can't let you go to Oshi's question, his next topic, until
- 31:51you tell me something from Kolobach.
- 31:53I'm sorry. I'm very connected to you.
- 31:54I'm very connected to her Shlomo.
- 31:57It's it's part of my life every Shabbos.
- 31:59It's part of my life almost every I have an Arab Shabbos
- 32:02Kalabach playlist, the Yakoshweki Kalabach melody.
- 32:06There's so much beauty from that from my perspective of just
- 32:08listening, right, just a fan. And I go to the, you know, he's
- 32:11buried next to my dad. I go and visit him all the time.
- 32:14And I met him one time and I said the story already on the
- 32:17podcast. I'm not going to bore you with
- 32:18the story, but the point is that I want to go back to that.
- 32:21You said I don't know if I want to mention.
- 32:23It I'll tell you, I'll tell you. Thank you.
- 32:27Unbelievable, unbelievable. So the the first time I actually
- 32:31met him is I used to perform the Post Karlbach show in the at
- 32:39Przanski's Pesach program. Which means no such a thing
- 32:42existed, by the way. Yes, because.
- 32:45Yeah, because. So in other words, the the show
- 32:46ended at 11:30. Supposed to right?
- 32:49Of course Karlbach would go to 12/12, 12:30, you know, because
- 32:52people didn't want to let him leave.
- 32:54And so, and he was in the big room, the room that had
- 32:57thousands or so seats. And then there were these little
- 32:59rooms, one that was like a little nightclub type of room
- 33:03where I'd be sitting there with the piano with about 100 chairs
- 33:06waiting for people to come. And nobody would come because
- 33:09everybody was waiting was what nobody wanted to leave.
- 33:12And he, they wouldn't let him go.
- 33:13And he, you know, and after a while I said to myself, look,
- 33:16I'm just sitting, it's nothing happening.
- 33:18So I decided I'm going to I'm going to go.
- 33:21I'll go into the I want to show you about me.
- 33:22This of a person who had nothing.
- 33:25I was a nothing to I was a little stinker next to him.
- 33:28I wasn't, I wasn't so young, but but in terms of being as known.
- 33:33Right. Professional.
- 33:34You're professional. Do you?
- 33:35I was hired to kind of do the do the, the lobby, the lobby job.
- 33:39You know, this was the lobby job I did.
- 33:41OK, not hired. That's what I got.
- 33:42I got some of the rooms of Pesach to be able to go away
- 33:45with my family and I see nobody is nobody's coming.
- 33:48So I said, you know what, let me go see what this car look is all
- 33:51about. I, I, I know that he's there and
- 33:53he's in the room and what's the point?
- 33:54So I go into the room and I open up the door and there's this
- 33:59huge, I, I don't know if it was in Kutcher's or one of these
- 34:02big, big, there are over 1000 a 1500 seats.
- 34:07You'll be surprised at what fits into that.
- 34:10And, and as soon as I walk into the room, I opened the door and
- 34:13apparently the light was shining on me.
- 34:16And he's in the middle of playing a song and he stops the
- 34:18guitar and he says, he says my, my brothers and sisters,
- 34:24whatever he said, they says, I want to tell you something.
- 34:27A person just walked into this room who when I get the chills
- 34:30when I when I when Mushiya comes, his songs will be sung
- 34:35when Mushiya comes. Stop it.
- 34:37I'm, I'm, I'm serious, but first of all, I was overcome.
- 34:41Second of all, I was wondering, how does he know me?
- 34:43How does he got anything to do with me?
- 34:45Does he any, they ever heard a song of mine?
- 34:46I mean, this guy was very busy and he was running around trying
- 34:49to make Pernosa Anthony McCarthy, but he didn't have the
- 34:51time to sit down and listen to other people's music, you know,
- 34:54So whether he understood that I'm following him and that I'm
- 35:00probably waiting and that I'm I'm going to have a little tiny
- 35:04show compared to his. And he this was his way of just
- 35:07giving to somebody who is which I know I was totally done.
- 35:11Just please come. I, I I wasn't like a deer in the
- 35:14headlights. What do I do?
- 35:15I'm in the back of the room. Come, do me a favor.
- 35:17I'm still I'll be finished soon. But come, come, come, sit down
- 35:20over here. Next thing.
- 35:21Come. You want to come?
- 35:21No, no, no, no, I want to stay here.
- 35:23What am I going to do on stage? I don't know.
- 35:25You know, I and I sat down and, you know, over the over there
- 35:28next time. And he finished the next song
- 35:30and he walks me to the other one.
- 35:34He tells everyone, by the way, if you want to hear some really,
- 35:37really special songs, I recommend he doesn't have a
- 35:40band. It's just him and the piano.
- 35:41Go inside and then listen to him.
- 35:43You'll have a wonderful time. Which is anyway, I got to know
- 35:46him like a day or so later, I met him again.
- 35:50When we sat down, we were speaking.
- 35:51I said, look, I want to thank you very much for yesterday.
- 35:53I mean, you really, we didn't even know each other.
- 35:55You have such a the way you the way.
- 35:57He says he gives me a kiss because, because, because,
- 35:59because I love you. What do you mean?
- 36:01But don't you understand about that, which was also something
- 36:04which I, I, you know, I'd, I'd never heard it said the way he
- 36:08said it. And then we, we got to talk a
- 36:10little bit about, about my background, the Yiddish guide
- 36:12and so on. Then he says we were talking
- 36:15about the, about growing up in Williamsburg and, and, and they
- 36:17says to me, what is the thing that that scares you, that
- 36:22bothers you the most about about the Yiddish guide about the I
- 36:27said seriously. And yeah, just tell me, tell me.
- 36:29I want to hear. So I said, look, you know, Vas,
- 36:31we we Winniesburg Shydish LL, you could feel the street
- 36:34trembling already. You literally imagined that the
- 36:37street was already people go around.
- 36:38Nobody would smile. He was walking on the street
- 36:41like that, like, you know, like very, very, very serious today.
- 36:45It's not like that. I'm come from a time and it was
- 36:47a very, very serious time. So the entire LL was we as
- 36:50young, young kids, we didn't really know what's to be scared
- 36:53about, but we looked at these adults, they were so frightened.
- 36:56Something very scary is, is, is happening now, you know, and
- 37:01nobody calmed us down and would say relax.
- 37:03So this was this was part of the the way we the way we grew up.
- 37:07And he smiles and he says, I want to tell you something.
- 37:10He says, Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur should be your most
- 37:14happiest day in the world. I said, and and the happiest day
- 37:19of the year. I said, what do you mean?
- 37:21This is everybody is crying, he says.
- 37:25He says people don't realize Yom Kippur is not a Yom to for
- 37:28Sadiqam. Sadiqam have Yom to for a whole
- 37:31year. God has one day, one day he like
- 37:34he's missing all those precious Eden that he doesn't see the
- 37:38entire year. He doesn't see them.
- 37:40So he came up with one day and and and and he said come to me.
- 37:44Come. I said you're afraid of the
- 37:46Sutton. Don't worry about it.
- 37:47Sutton is on vacation that I'm not listening.
- 37:49I don't care what you did to hold you.
- 37:50I don't want to hear anything today.
- 37:52I just want to see you. So he says people come.
- 37:55He says that Sadiq and some of the hijacked this Yontiff.
- 37:58He says it's not there. Yontiff.
- 38:00They should sit in the back and all these Eden that come once
- 38:03you should really be sitting in the front.
- 38:05I'm I'm I'm editorializing to explain expanding and he says,
- 38:10and you know what the biggest proof of this is?
- 38:12He says, you know, what's the first thing you say when you
- 38:14walk into shul? And there in Kipper, I'm
- 38:17thinking he goes al dasa Malcolm al dasa call only Matiran as
- 38:21Altman Matiran Liz Paolo in Abarian.
- 38:24He says, you know what Avarian are?
- 38:25He says you think in Avarian is somebody who doesn't put on the
- 38:28baby Tom still Alvarian is somebody who's never he's not
- 38:33connected a whole year. This is the opening of Yom
- 38:36Kippur says you open this beautiful big Marzer and
- 38:39everybody stands up the and and we tell everybody, please, this
- 38:44is a Yom Tup for Aber Yom. Come on, welcome, open your arms
- 38:48and beautiful. You should know every single Yom
- 38:52Kippur since then. I walk in.
- 38:53I say, hey, hey, come on, by the way, I fall someplace in
- 38:56between. I'm going to borrow from that
- 38:58because I used to always be nervous about Yom Kippur or
- 39:00Shoshanna, you know, I hear in my head.
- 39:04You got to make a song about this, make a song about this,
- 39:10and then he's going to tell people later that we inspired
- 39:13him to make this. We could get in.
- 39:15I'm the act over here, Michael. What?
- 39:19Would come to your mind. It's it's it's I don't know.
- 39:24I would have to to to to what? What am I?
- 39:27What am I feeling? To who?
- 39:29You said the story, now what are you feeling?
- 39:30What are you feeling? How does it look?
- 39:33Beautiful. I'm feeling that that Yom Kippur
- 39:34is a day that that Akudeshwar who gave the Sutton a day off
- 39:40not because of the Siddiqam, he said.
- 39:41Siddiqam, they have nothing. They're nothing to worry about.
- 39:43The Sutton. Yeah.
- 39:44They behave the whole the entire year.
- 39:46What do we have to worry about? Yeah, let him be, I hope.
- 39:48You take her, she's. A It's an opportunity for a
- 39:49second transfer. Yeah, that's all right.
- 39:51It's beautiful, those words. Come once a year, he says.
- 39:54I miss you. I know you're afraid to come.
- 39:56A whole year come. This is the day I made for you.
- 39:58You imagine making a song about something that's so scary,
- 40:01that's beautiful. I like that idea.
- 40:02You tone it down, you tone it down, you give them a different
- 40:04perspective. My 5 seconds are I'm glad.
- 40:06I'm very curious about how this whole business works OK and how
- 40:10it's monetized and how people make a living from this.
- 40:12You're. Talking about business of music.
- 40:15Yeah, It's my understanding that the music business isn't very
- 40:17lucrative for people and they do it mostly out of passion.
- 40:20And the real money is, I guess if you get gigs and you start
- 40:23singing at night and you start getting asking a big amounts,
- 40:26you know, come and sing an event, the bigger events to pay
- 40:28you more. Now that's really how you kind
- 40:30of make money. But you're really more on the
- 40:32composing side. Yes, you sing and you've done it
- 40:34many times, concerts. I remember as a kid watching the
- 40:38Hask concert, which was to me, I watched that 10 times.
- 40:42I watched it over and over. There wasn't a lot that we were
- 40:44watching back then. Sure, it wasn't a lot available,
- 40:46especially as a, you know, from Jewish kid growing up, we had
- 40:49limited choices to what we can watch just with something that
- 40:51our parents let us watch. And I would watch it all the
- 40:53time. And I remember you on the piano
- 40:55and I remember you singing with some other singers.
- 40:56I remember who was you were. Singing always.
- 40:58It was always doing the best. I'm reshuffling the.
- 41:00Same. And you have a very unique type
- 41:02of voice. You have a very different kind
- 41:03of voice. And it was very powerful and was
- 41:05very, I remember it years later. I took about 20-30 years later,
- 41:07I remember it, I really do. But I'm very curious, what was
- 41:10the first time that was like commercialized for you that you
- 41:13became a brand that everybody got to know who Yossi Green is,
- 41:17that he's somebody to be reckoned with.
- 41:19He's he's asked two different. Questions you asked about the
- 41:21monetization of it, I want to 1st and then you spoke something
- 41:23about a brand. The brand is something else.
- 41:26I want to get to the monetization in in a minute, but
- 41:28first I wanted to take a step back.
- 41:30What was that first time that you remember that it became
- 41:32official? It became, let's call it a bit
- 41:34business because now, you know, people needed you people.
- 41:37What were were you were sought after.
- 41:40You weren't looking for ever 2. They were finding you now
- 41:42because you became known as a big composer and people wanted
- 41:45your attention. What was that first moment that
- 41:46really broke you out, that made you, you know, next level?
- 41:50So we we kind of happened together.
- 41:54The, the, the, the, the business was built around at the time I
- 42:00started writing of Remel started singing, the, the, the arrangers
- 42:06started writing. It all happened.
- 42:08You know, I tell people this all the time.
- 42:09They get tired of hearing it, but it's true.
- 42:12I was born in 1955, which was a little under 10 years after the
- 42:16Holocaust. You have to have to say what
- 42:18that means. What does that mean?
- 42:19And as a child, I was very sensitive to this.
- 42:21Claudia Stewart was not singing at that time.
- 42:24They didn't sing. They cried.
- 42:26They didn't sing Mim Kleimka. Every Mim Kleimka was, was a
- 42:29cry. It wasn't sing.
- 42:30There was no happiness even even at at at a mid to dance.
- 42:39It was there's an there's an undercurrent of of pain, pain,
- 42:46pain and tears. And you're kidding.
- 42:47We made it to the mid to dance. Nobody Commander slam busted up
- 42:51the wedding. Hopefully these Jewish couples
- 42:53going to exit from here and they're going to start a life.
- 42:55And, you know, everything was like the people around were
- 42:58sitting at the mitzvah towns. If there's a lot of tragic, you
- 43:01know. So I was there when I I became
- 43:051314 when the first PK record came out and the second PK
- 43:09record. And the Boston rebel wrote this
- 43:11song and and, and the Ramatorski's kind of Rooker
- 43:15wrote Toshio Samerko and the song Sabe came out.
- 43:18So Eden was starting to sing at that time.
- 43:22And I was, we all began to flower at the same time.
- 43:26Do you understand? It's very, very, you know, you
- 43:30were born to a world where it's a developed world already.
- 43:32And it's, you know, so when these, when these people came to
- 43:35me. So for instance, I started in
- 43:36the beginning, I started writing for kids.
- 43:38I wrote to London School, then to New York school, then for
- 43:41near Schleimpierke and then for Sylva Zemmer.
- 43:44And then because that was the that was the medium that a
- 43:49Jewish Home would listen to music, they wouldn't listen to
- 43:52to an MBD because there was no such a thing as an MBD.
- 43:55So I wrote so and so. So I became a little better
- 43:58known all the time because you have a lot of kids and you have
- 44:01a lot of parents and you have a lot of friends and you have a
- 44:03lot of relatives. So every child, you would have
- 44:0618 kids in the choir, 18 kids meant you had hundreds of people
- 44:10that you that you became famous to.
- 44:13You know, they knew you, they met you backstage, they met you.
- 44:16They were picking up the kids. They were bringing up the kids
- 44:17in the morning. So that was in the beginning and
- 44:20then I, I, I lived in Borough Park because I got my first job
- 44:24in Borough Park. I lived in Williamsburg.
- 44:25But in order to be at 9:00 at my job focus I selling film,
- 44:31whatever batteries. So, so I in order he said, I'll
- 44:35give you the job, which was, I think it paid me $120.00 a week
- 44:39on the books working 60-70 hours.
- 44:42But I had to be there at 9:00 when I opened the dog walk in at
- 44:46nine O 5. I have plenty people that want
- 44:49this job, you know. Anyway, so in order to be there
- 44:51at 9:00, I had to sleep there. So in the beginning I slept by a
- 44:55relative in Borough Park. And then eventually I we got our
- 44:57own apartment, which today sounds like those days.
- 45:01It was like I got an apartment in Borough Park and the mayor,
- 45:05Sherman was my roommate. I needed somebody to share the
- 45:08rent with me. So we've had two, We had two
- 45:10rooms. He was my roommate and he played
- 45:13guitar. We had no piano.
- 45:15He played guitar and and he sang a little bit, you know, around
- 45:18the campfire in bungalow colonies.
- 45:21And he said, would you would you write me some songs?
- 45:25And I wrote him and I wrote him. So this is this is this is going
- 45:28to go into your monetization because you're going to fall off
- 45:30your feet when you hear the end of the punchline of the story.
- 45:33I wrote him 10 songs. I don't think you, you ever
- 45:36heard one of these songs. I don't think you know any of
- 45:38these songs. They're not known.
- 45:41They're not well known at all. He sold the album.
- 45:44He sold 20,000 albums the first year.
- 45:47Let me tell you what that means. The albums and those days were
- 45:50selling for five, $5 in the store.
- 45:54The cost of the production of the album was $1.00.
- 45:58That means that he got $4 * 20, which is $80,000.
- 46:03My House on the Ocean, which today is worth.
- 46:06I was, was I think, I think I purchased this for $70,000.
- 46:10Seventy. And what it took to get together
- 46:13that $30,000 down payment. How many borrowers and parents
- 46:17and relatives and one year he was my room.
- 46:21I had no idea this was happening.
- 46:22He's the one that made the album.
- 46:25He got the deal. Nobody told me anything.
- 46:28Years that I didn't know that I didn't know this.
- 46:30And then Avramel shows up. Why did Avramel show up?
- 46:32Because Shia Mandelwitzer was met a Bremel and brought a
- 46:36Bremel to my house and they knocked on the door.
- 46:38And I tell everybody that when they showed up, they looked like
- 46:40a before, like a diet before and after, you know, you know, she
- 46:44had canine horror was a big, big guy and a Bremel was so skinny
- 46:47that we turned sideways. He looked like a line, you know,
- 46:50like who he was. Still we've I still tell my wife
- 46:52that that guy, if he's not going to get reflector is on the side,
- 46:54he's going to get in a major accident.
- 46:56That's how skinny he was. Then they came to my house and
- 46:59they wanted me to do a song for them and I started writing for
- 47:03them. And he did his for album and he
- 47:05sold 35,000 albums in the first year or two.
- 47:08You understand what kind of money we're talking about.
- 47:12Any album that you came out with sold 20,000 albums.
- 47:16Anything. It was a wedding.
- 47:18Cloudy still was so hungry for music.
- 47:21There was so much money being made by these people.
- 47:25I I had nothing to do with it because I.
- 47:27So they didn't pay you for this one?
- 47:28No what pay you you. Didn't have there.
- 47:30Was no, this is so wonderful. I'm looking at you guys and
- 47:34you're developed, you understand, you understand what
- 47:37your value is and you want to get paid.
- 47:39You're good at something. Never do it for.
- 47:40Free. Never do it for free.
- 47:41I had to, but nobody did this thing yet.
- 47:45It's only years later they began to go, wait a minute, if they're
- 47:49making this and they're making, shouldn't I?
- 47:52There was a lot of whip marks on my back to show you what it
- 47:55looks like till I finally got the got the message across that
- 47:57I'm not going to do this anymore unless I get paid.
- 48:02Good for you. A couple of years too late, but
- 48:05you learned your lesson the. Hard way.
- 48:06Because they were making money. Money they were.
- 48:09Making money. You cannot imagine the kind of
- 48:12money and I'll tell you right now.
- 48:14So let me just tell you something.
- 48:16We talk about 1000 songs before. Let me tell you what 1000 songs
- 48:19means. Forget about, forget about my my
- 48:21input. 1000 songs means there were 1000 songs that were
- 48:25produced at an average of between 6 and $10,000 A song you
- 48:30talk about there is people that earned $10 million worth of of
- 48:37income from stuff that happened. With these fingers.
- 48:41With the piano. Can you imagine that?
- 48:43That's serious monetization, right?
- 48:46Anyway. So what was that first big song
- 48:49that you actually made money on? What was the first song that
- 48:51really put some some green in your pocket and you realize like
- 48:55green? I like the.
- 48:56Pun, yeah. No pun intended.
- 48:57That I could actually make some money here.
- 48:59Aduraba. Aduraba so that How long did it
- 49:02take you to compose Aduraba? No, it didn't.
- 49:05It didn't take me to compose. It wasn't a matter of Aduraba is
- 49:08not about the song it's about, It's about the text.
- 49:11Then then there's a whole other. There's a whole other piece
- 49:15that's missing here, which is the text.
- 49:16It's not the song, it's the text.
- 49:18My, my, my music, my my writing, my my MO is all about the text
- 49:251st and then the melody. It's always about the text.
- 49:28That's where it started from. That's it.
- 49:29You. Have to find the right.
- 49:30Foundation of That's the right, yeah.
- 49:33But that wasn't my text. I understand that was his.
- 49:36Text. You've seen it.
- 49:37You've seen it. That's the first opening to your
- 49:39life. That was, yeah.
- 49:40But that was, that's, he was my, my mentor.
- 49:43I saw that he, he connected. I said, what is the piano?
- 49:46What does this melody have to do with the text?
- 49:49And I he he showed me that there's no such a thing as a
- 49:52melody without text. By the way, that's why I like
- 49:54Koshi's idea of taking the text of Yom Kippur and making a song
- 49:56out of it. Because like, no.
- 49:57It's about the. Text, but it's hard of the
- 49:58words. But there's so much it's equal
- 49:59costume and not safer. The story that got you moved is,
- 50:03is Schleimer's vision of it the way he would look at Yom Kippur?
- 50:08And that's why he invited all of these people that it didn't
- 50:10matter to him. That Nebuchaste.
- 50:12Who knows where the guy was today?
- 50:13What's the difference? He's in shul.
- 50:15He's with me tonight. And you know.
- 50:17Is there any residual monetization from any of your
- 50:20songs that you're still making money until today or or is it a
- 50:23one and done? You get paid for it, even if
- 50:25it's a large amount, but it's kind of a hit and run and that's
- 50:27it and you move on. Excellent question, but I don't
- 50:29mind that. But if you want to talk about
- 50:30anything else here besides this, we can go on this.
- 50:33There's a homeless sector, there's royalties, there's
- 50:36mechanical royalties. There is the what's been what's
- 50:38happening now where the performers and the writers are
- 50:41being very, very hurt because of Spotify.
- 50:46I mean, they're being hurt very, very badly, you know, but that,
- 50:49but we used to make a lot of money.
- 50:51So we realized that in order to do this, I can't only write, I
- 50:55have to produce. I have to finance the albums.
- 50:57I got to do them myself and I got to bring the artist to me
- 51:01and say, would you like to perform and come this way?
- 51:06That's when it would change and. The the full continuum of care.
- 51:09It was my. Top to bottom and you're
- 51:11controlling everything. Then then specific projects.
- 51:14Not everything. I mean, the MBD didn't need me
- 51:17to produce his his albums. Ramel wasn't going to have me
- 51:21because she Mendel was Lahava Mehheim.
- 51:24Lehheim is the one that brought him to the house and they had a
- 51:27thing going until they didn't. You know I.
- 51:29Have to tell you that, you know, the, the monetization, the
- 51:31business side of it, it's all fascinating.
- 51:33But I'm going back to the emotion of it and I'm sorry and
- 51:36here I have to go back in. I'm placing myself in Israel in
- 51:39the old city, yes. And there's a time every year,
- 51:43it probably happens a few times throughout the year actually,
- 51:45that you have at least over 100,000 people that fill up that
- 51:49the stadium of all stadiums. That is what I like to call it,
- 51:53right? And you know, I wonder what it
- 51:55does to you. Have you ever been there and you
- 51:57heard 100,000 people singing your song?
- 51:59Yes, I've been there and I and I see it and I try to try you.
- 52:02You can't. So, well, I only own a song
- 52:07until it's between me and and whoever sitting next to me and
- 52:12the piano and my wife was in the kitchen and, and the feeling
- 52:16that there is something happening in this room now
- 52:18that's that's larger, larger than life and larger than me,
- 52:21larger than all of us. And the Fern, which turns into a
- 52:24fervent prayer. Please rundle and please take
- 52:26this and let everybody feel what we're feeling now, because we're
- 52:30feeling something that's really that's real.
- 52:32And that like other Aberteim Billy Bain and Shneer color.
- 52:35I mean, it's like the rebel Imelech.
- 52:36You know, the the world knows Benardo MC Avero from but the
- 52:39Hofitzheim, which is the beginning of the, of the the
- 52:4220th century. They don't know that there was a
- 52:45rebel Imelech, one of the Cassidi greatest Cassidi surebis
- 52:48who was talking about this idea then already that 10 bilibenu
- 52:53Shaniro colecidis malas cavareno villekas rhinum, which in a
- 52:56dabber colecidis caveiro videre ka yoshua veneko aliala bilibenu
- 53:02shum sinam ekhadaka. I mean, this is when I saw this
- 53:06now this is it's been in the Center for for 300 years, you
- 53:11know, and and I happened. This is a filler that that he
- 53:14wrote to be said before Filizaka, that same place that
- 53:18we're talking before the guys show up, before the you know, so
- 53:23you know, there's that hold filly Rodson, right?
- 53:24And and at that time you very emotional.
- 53:27You have your Talos covered. You you worried about him,
- 53:29Kipper. What's this going to be like?
- 53:30And and and I would see this and they would break me up and I
- 53:34said, you know, what would it be like if I could somehow take
- 53:36this lyric and I could put this on the piano?
- 53:39There was no word processing at that time.
- 53:42He had a right and doing the kudos by hand.
- 53:46Big words on the piano and stick it to the piano because if I
- 53:50open the door the the the paper would fly.
- 53:52We don't know what the words were.
- 53:53So we'd put tape on it and your wife would say, what are you
- 53:56going to ruin the piano? You know, anyway, she never said
- 53:58that, but but but and and to one day know that I I hear it and
- 54:05know that Berksham the melody has been delivered and that this
- 54:08lyric now has wings and that there are people all over the
- 54:12world who may one day know these words because we had a melody at
- 54:17this piano. This is impossible to own.
- 54:20You can't own this. Somebody sent me yesterday.
- 54:23He was a guy. He was he's or Bachemiche.
- 54:26I think there is a place called Hummus Adaraba.
- 54:31He's got his whole family and they're going in and he sends me
- 54:35texts. He says, y'all see, look at this
- 54:36thing. I'm going in to the store.
- 54:38It's called Huma Sadaraba. And he walks in and you see
- 54:42these guys with these big knitted dinar Yama because with
- 54:44the loan payers and they're serving and he's got this, these
- 54:47other ABBA posters all over the place and, and and he's got
- 54:50these little acid boxes. If you're not going to if you if
- 54:53you if you feel that you don't need the other half of the
- 54:55sandwich. This is a sandwich.
- 54:57This is a place for people to come in.
- 54:59They look to see if there's any sandwich in there.
- 55:01Please don't throw it away. Put your sandwich in here.
- 55:03And it's it's I mean Israel is is some of the Eden in Israel
- 55:08are are like, forget about it. It's like it's.
- 55:10But anyway, he's got other eyeball over place or I have
- 55:13somebody who who excitedly sends me he's went to Manhattan to
- 55:18some eye doctor and he's looking at at the he's looking at, you
- 55:22know, for the eyes. The guys checking the eyes got
- 55:24olive dollard rage base hay and it gets smaller and smaller and
- 55:29he's got other. You just see that.
- 55:31No this. Is posters all over opticians
- 55:33have it all over the. Place you know I've never.
- 55:36Seen it. Yeah, it's everyone knows.
- 55:38Exactly. So this is in every kind, every.
- 55:41I'll tell you. In other Abbott, the thing that
- 55:43finally made me realize that this is like there was a guy
- 55:46called Zvolden Hammer. He was the head of the Mizrahi
- 55:51years, years ago. I don't come from a family that
- 55:53really was excited about the fact that I had any connection
- 55:56with Mizrahi. But to me, I love every single
- 55:58lead. There's no difference by me, by
- 56:00the way, every single I don't have, I really don't have any
- 56:03favourites or preferences or anyway.
- 56:06So he's he, he heard that I was in Israel and he loved the song
- 56:10Adder ABBA and he was the minister of religion.
- 56:13I didn't even know what it means to be the minister of religion.
- 56:16But apparently everything of Hiner that has to do in Israel
- 56:19is decided by him. So he asked my the host who was
- 56:22when he knew they were good friends.
- 56:23He says you have your CBI will be OK if I pick him up.
- 56:26I'd like to drive him to the school to one of the schools.
- 56:29I want to show him something that I'm sure will make him
- 56:30happy. And he takes me in.
- 56:32He picks me up and I'm very I know his villain Hammer.
- 56:34He's in the newspapers every day, you know, and he takes me
- 56:38into little what is the pre won a first grade.
- 56:42So I had never been in a, in an Israeli, you know, real kind of
- 56:47what is it called Nursery Amami. It's a what?
- 56:50A. Nursery.
- 56:50What? No.
- 56:51No. Not again.
- 56:52No. A school of first grade, First
- 56:54for what's it called? Amami.
- 56:58It's a school. A school.
- 56:59Hebrew word for. It Yeah, there's a In other
- 57:01words, this is the official Israeli schools for children.
- 57:05Not, not really, not kind of what's my not the public school,
- 57:11yeah, but for the for the for the, for the front, the front
- 57:14people in Israel and I walk in and it's like what?
- 57:17He says he waited like 3:00 or 2:00.
- 57:20I forgot what it was. And he says, I want to walk in
- 57:21with you exactly 5 minutes before the hour.
- 57:23So I want to show you something interesting.
- 57:25OK. We walk in and he he he nods to
- 57:27the to the teacher got all excited as woolen hammer is
- 57:31here. It's no clue who's the guy with
- 57:32the pace anyway. And he walks with me to the back
- 57:35of the of the room and he says just wait here and at 5:00 to at
- 57:385:00 to 2:00 or whatever it was. All the kids get up.
- 57:41There was like 30 kids in the class.
- 57:42They all go to the front of a poster and and they they say
- 57:48together they go Al Ghaba, Then Billy Benu.
- 57:58I started crying, he says. That's why I brought you.
- 58:00I want you to see. Wow, you think you're sitting at
- 58:02home and you should know this is what happens.
- 58:05This is how far it reaches. This is this is five year olds,
- 58:076 years old six year olds that are saying it on the way, like
- 58:11Maida ani. They're saying it anyway.
- 58:13Who gave the best rendition in your mind of the adorable?
- 58:17Of Rammel. Everybody else is doing a cover,
- 58:20you know that's in a cover, and you know the real difference
- 58:23between singing a cover and singing an original.
- 58:27What's the difference? You're interested in the
- 58:29different. Of course I love covers, but I
- 58:31agree. I love covers too.
- 58:32Yeah, I agree with you about. That a cover is forever a cover.
- 58:36Usually the guy does a cover, has a way better voice than the
- 58:39original artist and he's got all kinds of acrobatics and he's
- 58:44showing off. He's got, he's showing.
- 58:46You know, the person who sings it originally is usually the guy
- 58:49that I wrote it for who's sitting right next to me.
- 58:52I usually write for people that are sitting next to me, by the
- 58:54way. I don't write a song and and
- 58:56hold hold on a second. Who am I giving this to?
- 58:59Interesting. Of course, everybody always used
- 59:00to tell me why do you give him these, these best songs and you
- 59:03don't give this guy. I said, what are you talking
- 59:05about? I don't.
- 59:05Give. I don't give.
- 59:06Nothing. A person comes and and and
- 59:09whatever. Whatever comes here.
- 59:11Whatever. That makes.
- 59:12Sense we have a conversation like this, Let's say we have a
- 59:14piano here and you were talking and you would say play
- 59:17something. Whatever would happen, it would
- 59:19be uniquely your song. And if you have the ability, the
- 59:23way you would sing it with your broken voice or with whatever,
- 59:27everybody who's sensitive and know this is Ushi's song.
- 59:30Oh, I did an amazing job on that song out around.
- 59:33Come on. Sure.
- 59:34I mean, that was going to be a cover.
- 59:36Yeah, that was going to be a cover.
- 59:37It's a cover and they know they know it.
- 59:40They know it because of the guy who sings the sings it
- 59:42originally. If he's sitting in the audience
- 59:45and they happen to spot him in the audience, they would like
- 59:49falter immediately. Yeah, for sure.
- 59:51Got into your head, if I eliminated every song you ever
- 59:55wrote and I let you keep 1, you got to keep one.
- 59:57You're not keeping anything else one that this is going to be
- 1:00:00your claim to fame and they'll remember this song about you for
- 1:00:03the next 1000 years. So you you OK, so you're asking.
- 1:00:05Why and why? So again, so I need to
- 1:00:08understand what is the reason for the question my claim to
- 1:00:11fame. No, not going to you personally
- 1:00:13your favorite that you not give me this.
- 1:00:15But I'm not. You mean if I'm not?
- 1:00:17You have to pick. I know you probably have 451015
- 1:00:19but right now I'm putting you on the spot to pick.
- 1:00:21One, I'll tell you why it's a very difficult answer.
- 1:00:23It's a difficult I I'm sorry. I'm not.
- 1:00:25I'm not weaseling out of it. If you told me give me 5, maybe
- 1:00:28I could do it. But I have a song called Give me
- 1:00:303. You know, radiation.
- 1:00:32I'm very bad. OK, OK, So let me tell you.
- 1:00:34I'm sorry, I know. It you know it, No, but you're.
- 1:00:36Asking out of the words. You spin the question like this,
- 1:00:41that is this Stephen, He's a real person I love.
- 1:00:44It I love his blouses. Spin it like this.
- 1:00:46Sort of like the Joe Di Maggio card.
- 1:00:48The card, the song is stuck away in the drawer and you need to
- 1:00:52use it to bail out the Ishiva. It's that prize possession.
- 1:00:57What's the song? So that's a fundraiser question.
- 1:00:59I understand what he's saying. Exactly fundra.
- 1:01:01Depends on the scenario of what favorite is and someone like
- 1:01:05him. You can raise funds with with
- 1:01:06with Hebrew. You you can raise funds with Joe
- 1:01:08Di Maggio's believe me, you can. By the way, I just evolved about
- 1:01:12him. He's my contemporary.
- 1:01:14He's he's to me. He's he's he's my God Ladar.
- 1:01:17When it comes to these kind of songs, there's nothing to talk
- 1:01:20about. We both come.
- 1:01:21He's older than me, but and we both grew up at the same time
- 1:01:24and we had a very healthy kind of site from through all the
- 1:01:28years and we finally somehow, you know, got the like me in
- 1:01:34prime source. Just kidding.
- 1:01:36You know what? Let's go there.
- 1:01:37But before we do, I, I, you. Know I'm giving him the.
- 1:01:40I have a question that we ask in the middle of the podcast, which
- 1:01:44is pretty much where we're up to right now.
- 1:01:46And usually the guest is, you know, comes from one sort of
- 1:01:50background that there's a message that he can give to the,
- 1:01:52to anyone who's listening. I, I feel like with you,
- 1:01:55especially after speaking to you earlier, that it's not fair to
- 1:01:58ask you to just generally give a message.
- 1:02:01We're going to shift to business in a minute.
- 1:02:03I feel it coming before we get away from the music world, you
- 1:02:07know, Speaking of the monetary gaining or losses and then what
- 1:02:11to be careful from and the proudest moment and, you know,
- 1:02:15the feelings that you have and the moments that you've had.
- 1:02:17What would be your message when it comes to just music in
- 1:02:21general or Jewish music? Is there a a message that you
- 1:02:25would love to share with the world, with people listening?
- 1:02:30What would that be? Well, I can.
- 1:02:32I can speak only to to myself. No, that I can only speak.
- 1:02:35I don't speak. Sure.
- 1:02:36This is the Here is the truth. No, no, no, that's not of.
- 1:02:39Course we're not. We're not.
- 1:02:40This is not, we're not looking for an MLK moment.
- 1:02:42We're just I. Can tell you what, what I feel
- 1:02:44is the most important, the most important element of Jewish
- 1:02:49music. And I'm not quoting, unquoting,
- 1:02:52I'm telling you, I mean, I mean, I mean our music, you know, I'm
- 1:02:55not doing this. I'm, you know, Jewish music, our
- 1:02:58music, it's all based on the text.
- 1:03:03The melody is the second part of it.
- 1:03:07And as long as Jewish music is looked at as the melody itself
- 1:03:11and the production is there are guys there is there is a world
- 1:03:15out there as a George Martin was a producer of The Beatles.
- 1:03:19Nobody can produce like George Martin never know.
- 1:03:21But nowhere in terms of writing melodies like Paul McCartney.
- 1:03:26I mean, I'm I'm mentioning people that are not There are
- 1:03:29people who have great great. God gave them tremendous talent.
- 1:03:33Talent. A guy called Jacob Collier.
- 1:03:35I mean, I'm I hope I hope you you heard of Jacob Collier.
- 1:03:38Maybe maybe you didn't. He's the Mozart of the
- 1:03:41generation today. OK.
- 1:03:42And why is he amazing? What was amazing about Mozart?
- 1:03:44Mozart was a little 8-9 year old kid when the greatest composers
- 1:03:48in the in his time and he lived in the classical era.
- 1:03:51I mean, like before Beethoven, after Hayden, after, you know,
- 1:03:55and he was he was writing songs by playing piano that there were
- 1:04:00literally people composers who had worked all their lives and
- 1:04:04they they would breakdown crying and he's a little stinker 67
- 1:04:09year old. And he would do stupid things
- 1:04:11after he was finished, you know, And when you would see it to me,
- 1:04:14when I would look at I said this is because Barker does these
- 1:04:17things as he wants to show the world what he can do.
- 1:04:22What you, you know, here, you want to see, you want to see
- 1:04:24talent table takes the whole thing.
- 1:04:26And he poured out the whole barrel of talent on this kid,
- 1:04:29you know, so there are great talents.
- 1:04:32This Jacob Collier is that kind of person.
- 1:04:35I recommend you, you you take a look at him and see what it is.
- 1:04:38I mean, I don't know. I'm not telling.
- 1:04:40I'm not telling people what you know, you know, this is going
- 1:04:42out. I'm not.
- 1:04:44But he's somebody that to me, he's something.
- 1:04:47It's incredible that such a thing exists in the world, that
- 1:04:49the person can have that kind of talent.
- 1:04:52That's not what Jewish music is about.
- 1:04:54Jewish music is about. It's a, an MCE.
- 1:04:57It's a vehicle to get texts out that people would never hear and
- 1:05:03they would never encounter in the normal life.
- 1:05:05And that's what Adaraba is. What a difference is Tanya, the
- 1:05:09the Tanya was the big song before Adaraba.
- 1:05:10I don't know if you're familiar with that.
- 1:05:12OK. Tanya is a Gemara in the name
- 1:05:14Sector Brokers Dafzai, which I always used to say that.
- 1:05:17Who didn't learn Sector Brokers Dafzai?
- 1:05:20Everybody throws in the towel but Dafyud.
- 1:05:23But by Dafzai, you're still in it.
- 1:05:25You're still right. You're still there, and then I'm
- 1:05:27going to try again, and then you try again.
- 1:05:29You get this Dafzai, you say maybe this is not Shabbos.
- 1:05:34You know what? Shabbos has got a lock as it has
- 1:05:35everything. You start Shabbos, you'd see
- 1:05:37it's a Shabbos times. Oh, oh, suka.
- 1:05:40Suka is a small, you know. You know, this is what we used
- 1:05:42to be in Shiva. We tried to conquer that one
- 1:05:45dissect, and we just couldn't. We just couldn't do it.
- 1:05:48So everybody got to Brock's dab sign and Brock's dab sign.
- 1:05:52When I got there, I saw this story that there was small Ben
- 1:05:56Alicia, who's the one of the last Kahanam Gaddaam in the
- 1:06:00second based on Mikdash. He's one of the people that was
- 1:06:03now of the Asura Ruga Malchus. You know, I mean, he's, he's
- 1:06:06talking about he was killed in a in a very, very horrific,
- 1:06:10horrific way. And he walked in to the to the
- 1:06:14Kachakadashim because that, you know, comes that time in the
- 1:06:16middle of Yom Kippur when he walks in the Kachakadashim and
- 1:06:19he and he comes out and he tells the story that happened to him
- 1:06:23over there. There was this apparition.
- 1:06:25He saw God sitting over there. In the end, in the God he's
- 1:06:31speaking about God there is he's sitting over there in in the
- 1:06:37country. By the way.
- 1:06:40Right, I'll kiss her. And he says to me, he's I'm
- 1:06:44quoting him. You're you're Ishmael.
- 1:06:46You're a kind, right? You're kind.
- 1:06:50You're kind. Goddle, I gave you the power of
- 1:06:52blessing. Bless me.
- 1:06:53Give me a brocha. I called you Barack was asking
- 1:06:55this kind again. I'm like getting the chills like
- 1:07:00and and I thought about I'm again, I'm paraphrasing.
- 1:07:03What can I how do I bless? Blessing means you, you, you
- 1:07:08know what a blessing? It's an increase, right, Right.
- 1:07:10When you want a brocha, you want more of what you how's he going
- 1:07:14to write? What's he say so he says so.
- 1:07:17So he came, he thought about it and then he came up.
- 1:07:19He realized that the cottage Brock was asking and this is my
- 1:07:21own understanding of it, obviously, because Brock is is
- 1:07:25is giving him a message. Listen to listen to my question
- 1:07:28and respond. And he says apparently it was a
- 1:07:31tremendous kitchen and Claudius for all the time.
- 1:07:33And he says, I want you to make a demand from me that I should
- 1:07:37increase my Rachman and look away from things that I have to
- 1:07:44look away, you know, and it says and I nodded and I agreed with
- 1:07:49him. I said in other words, so so I
- 1:07:51realized right away, this is not a brocha.
- 1:07:53This is this is this is how could the brocha was asking
- 1:07:56because he wants to have a piss compared to the other side.
- 1:07:59That's that's saying that the Jews aren't totally what should
- 1:08:02I do? He first of all, Richmond
- 1:08:04cangles at Sadiq and Sadiq goes there because he asked me.
- 1:08:08He told me that I should give him that, that I have to do
- 1:08:10this. I got to do this.
- 1:08:12You know, I'm and I sat down to write a song which became a A a.
- 1:08:17Mega hit. This was the beginning of that,
- 1:08:19yeah, of that genre and. That's that question, but I I do
- 1:08:22want to say that I happen to know personally, yes, that you
- 1:08:27recently celebrated a birthday yes, So happy birthday to you.
- 1:08:30I mentioned it on last week's episode and last episode and
- 1:08:35thank you Gershi. That's.
- 1:08:36Called a confident man he knew already last week.
- 1:08:38I'll be here. Well, thank you.
- 1:08:39You know, Gershi recommended you and you're here so graciously,
- 1:08:42so we certainly appreciate it. We spoke about the birthday.
- 1:08:46I'm thinking right now while you're talking about this song
- 1:08:48is that we each have the opportunity every year to have
- 1:08:51the power of a coin. Yes, it's on our birthday, sure.
- 1:08:54And on our birthday we have the ability to give up blessings.
- 1:08:56It's kind of it's I actually love birthdays.
- 1:08:58I love celebrating birthdays and happy birthday to you.
- 1:09:01Thank you. I I almost feel like I want to
- 1:09:04sing to you, but I'm going to sing.
- 1:09:05It's wonderful. Happy birthday is it's a
- 1:09:07beautiful every brocha that you get from me, the brocha is a
- 1:09:11it's it's what does it even mean that where do you where does
- 1:09:15somebody come of blessing another person?
- 1:09:16It's obviously a brocha that I got the brocha gave 1 Eid and he
- 1:09:21said, look, if you mean it, you can actually add a real positive
- 1:09:26energy to this other person's life.
- 1:09:27That's what it is. It's not a joke.
- 1:09:29It's not one of those things. Now give me a blessing, you
- 1:09:31know, but I'll say it has a bracha means something.
- 1:09:34You know, you know the thing about Barack was managing how
- 1:09:36you know the this is the villa Guna says that base Rashkov are
- 1:09:40the are the in the in the in the half base Ossies of Alabay.
- 1:09:44These are the doubling OCS. Base is 2, Hof is 20 and Rash is
- 1:09:50200. That's why Bahar gets speech 9
- 1:09:53because Bay is half rage. Because it's the bahar.
- 1:09:56The first born gets a doubling because the word bahar and the
- 1:10:01word baruch is the same. So it's, in other words, it's a
- 1:10:04doubling of, of of. Enhancing you, sort of.
- 1:10:08Lose me when you come to Gematria.
- 1:10:09I'm sorry. I'm sorry, OK.
- 1:10:11It's not a big be a matri. This is very fascinating that
- 1:10:14the that the word is going. Back to the the, the blessing.
- 1:10:17They got it. So, so you know, it's too late.
- 1:10:19I can't get a blessing from you on your birthday, but I'm sure
- 1:10:21I'm gonna believe you definitely get a mercy from me.
- 1:10:23What's? The good you could, why not
- 1:10:24100%? Sure, but it's.
- 1:10:26It's not a magic done a magic day.
- 1:10:27It's a day I. Think it's magical, I think.
- 1:10:29It's well, I. Hear what you're saying but.
- 1:10:31I think what it's supposed to, you know, you know the thing,
- 1:10:33you know the thing with the red, the red thread.
- 1:10:36Sure. So like so so.
- 1:10:38Against the bad omen. Against the bad omen.
- 1:10:40So all the all the years. Well, come on, you can have a
- 1:10:43somebody really, Khalil, because hates you and hates somebody
- 1:10:47else and doesn't forgive him nothing, Khalil.
- 1:10:48That guy's gonna have a bad here.
- 1:10:51Not you can do about it obviously, obviously with.
- 1:10:56You, I'm just saying. So let me tell you, let me tell
- 1:10:57you what it means. It's an unbelievable.
- 1:10:58So you put it on your little baby, you know, your little baby
- 1:11:00in the carriage and you put because your baby's gorgeous and
- 1:11:03you're afraid people are going to not forget you.
- 1:11:05So he put this thing on and it's OK.
- 1:11:07My little baby has. He says that's not what it is.
- 1:11:10It's what it's supposed to. It's supposed to remind the
- 1:11:12person who sees it not to give you an Einhart.
- 1:11:16That's what it's not. It's not a magic.
- 1:11:18It's supposed to write what the birthday, what the birthday is.
- 1:11:23It's reminds you, you should know something.
- 1:11:24You can bless people a whole year, but on your birthday, this
- 1:11:28is the day when you can read. But it's not magic on the
- 1:11:31birthday either. If you don't, if you don't do it
- 1:11:33with all yourself, I hear. What you're saying it makes
- 1:11:35sense I. Agree.
- 1:11:35And I hate you with all my, all my Oh, tell me you have a doubt.
- 1:11:38You have a doubt that I meant you should be much.
- 1:11:41You should have you the Schnakis and Sholam Bai's and you should
- 1:11:44be your your prime source should become the most well known
- 1:11:49purchasing, you know, system in in the entire healthcare
- 1:11:54industry. And you should go public or
- 1:11:55whatever it is that you're looking for or whatever.
- 1:11:58And that's what we. Were looking for, by the way,
- 1:12:00having you at the seat. I'm being honest.
- 1:12:01With you and the eco is that you should, you should have a good,
- 1:12:03you should have, you should have, you shouldn't have a good
- 1:12:06life with it. It shouldn't make you, make you.
- 1:12:08A main. And thank you.
- 1:12:09And I really appreciate it. I'm gonna tell you what my
- 1:12:11father always told me. OK.
- 1:12:12Whatever you wish me. I wish you double.
- 1:12:13There you go. Thank you very much.
- 1:12:15I know it's not my birthday, but please accept it as if it was
- 1:12:16accepted on your birthday. Yes, I happen to know because a
- 1:12:20little birdie told me her name is Rookie.
- 1:12:22Yeah. And she mentioned to me that she
- 1:12:24did something very special for you.
- 1:12:25And I want to mention it for a minute because I have a
- 1:12:28question. You have an alphabetical order
- 1:12:30because she did a whole bunch of special things.
- 1:12:31I'm I'm going. To start with AI guess she
- 1:12:35always knows what to do. She does to get to your heart.
- 1:12:39Yes, she knows me well, people. Can't hear you on the mic, but
- 1:12:42what Rookie is saying is that it's your best friend right here
- 1:12:44and. I rookie ultimately.
- 1:12:45I happen to know that what she did was she spent a very long
- 1:12:49time and a considerable amount of effort and got people a year
- 1:12:54of work that she put into your birthday gift, which is so
- 1:12:58beautiful. It's like I'm getting
- 1:12:59emotionally been talking about it.
- 1:13:01And she compiled videos from everyone who was part of your
- 1:13:05life. And she took her time and
- 1:13:07created a / 3 hour compilation of videos of people that were
- 1:13:12connected to you in your life, giving you a blessing.
- 1:13:14Wow, 3 hours. More 3 hours and 15 minutes.
- 1:13:17I'm more amazed that there's so much content for three hours,
- 1:13:20that you have so many people out there that are wishing you well
- 1:13:23and that care enough to record something for you.
- 1:13:25I mean, you made lasting impressions on people that you
- 1:13:28haven't. I could get maybe 8 minutes, you
- 1:13:30know, 10 minutes. For me and started digging.
- 1:13:32In half of it. Half of it from my wife.
- 1:13:34These young guys you all want to be, Come on.
- 1:13:38Put the effort in. That's very, very impressive.
- 1:13:40Have you watched all of it? You watched.
- 1:13:42All we went on vacation afterwards.
- 1:13:43If I may ask you and I, I don't want to get too invasive and you
- 1:13:47know. If you're going to ask me who is
- 1:13:48the most, not most, that's a great question.
- 1:13:51I'd love to hear favorite. There's no most.
- 1:13:53I'm just curious if anything is standing out to you that you say
- 1:13:56to yourself. Wow, just hearing that person
- 1:13:58say that it's just, you know, it's something amazing.
- 1:14:01It's just something it's something I can learn from
- 1:14:03something that I you could share with a teachable moment.
- 1:14:05Is there any I use that with my children all the time, a
- 1:14:08teachable moment. So I'm just curious what you
- 1:14:10think. Obviously I would love to ask
- 1:14:11rookie what she thinks, but first I'm going to ask you what
- 1:14:14you think in terms of, you know, there's so much content there,
- 1:14:16but was there something that stood out or one or two?
- 1:14:19I'm sure the 10 anything that comes to your mind because what
- 1:14:22a beautiful moment to share. We.
- 1:14:23Have patience to hear a little story is amusing and relates to
- 1:14:27the healthcare business patients.
- 1:14:29I can tell you. I can tell you what probably
- 1:14:32moved me more than anything as as a video from the videos that
- 1:14:38she. Please.
- 1:14:39It's kind of why you're here, Yasi.
- 1:14:40There you go. It's kind of the reason we
- 1:14:42invited you. I would love to hear the story.
- 1:14:43And he's giving us the triple threat here.
- 1:14:46We're getting a little healthcare.
- 1:14:47Yes, we're getting a lot of a moment.
- 1:14:49Now you're getting a lot of a story.
- 1:14:51You asked how did we build this company?
- 1:14:54We didn't come from this company.
- 1:14:55Our parents and our businesses, our parents were very, very
- 1:14:59people that worked very, very hard for every penny.
- 1:15:01They had so little, my in laws and my parents.
- 1:15:04We don't come, you know, at all from from any, any familial
- 1:15:09wealth. And 1985 is when we opened up
- 1:15:14our company. October of 1985 was when we
- 1:15:18incorporated Gerry Medics incorporated at the time.
- 1:15:21And 1987 is when AIDS broke out in the world.
- 1:15:26There was this new Mahler Rahman Lutslam, and people were
- 1:15:30shifting around where it comes from, how it comes, where it
- 1:15:32comes, whatever. And America ran out of something
- 1:15:37called gloves. Now, can I ask where were you in
- 1:15:411985? I was born in 86.
- 1:15:45At least at least that you know, usually when I say I say this,
- 1:15:50the interviews look at each other in 1985 anyway, and it was
- 1:15:56determined suddenly America ran out of gloves.
- 1:15:58You don't know what that means. They they just didn't have
- 1:16:00gloves. All the the postman had to have
- 1:16:04gloves. The tall guy had have gloves.
- 1:16:07The police officer in the car had have a box of gloves.
- 1:16:10Otherwise you couldn't get into the it's like mask the fire the
- 1:16:12original covered, but masks, people mask was not even in the
- 1:16:16right. It wasn't even in and anybody
- 1:16:18nobody realized that it was happening.
- 1:16:19I mean, by mass, we already knew there were people in advance.
- 1:16:23There were people who were making masks a year in advance
- 1:16:25already. They had connections with COVID.
- 1:16:26I actually. Never knew this.
- 1:16:27I was alive during this era. I never knew this.
- 1:16:29I'm fascinated by this is. This is, I'm telling you, this
- 1:16:31is the fascinating first PPE, the 1st and there was no gloves.
- 1:16:35And I met Eid who told me that he goes to China to do all kinds
- 1:16:41of whatever jewelry I think was at the time and and I think it
- 1:16:45was in the jewelry business. And he said to me, I see what
- 1:16:48you have to do is you got to do, you got to come with me, I'll
- 1:16:52take you to Hong Kong. Hong Kong, wow.
- 1:16:54Hong Kong was just, it was like a dream.
- 1:16:56Hong Kong was like paradise, which we never, we thought who's
- 1:16:59which, who in our life is ever going to visit Hong Kong?
- 1:17:03And from Hong Kong, we will fly into China, we will train into
- 1:17:08China, we will boat into China, we will drive into China.
- 1:17:12They explain to the Hong Kong is a place that China is this big
- 1:17:15place. And you can, you know, you, you
- 1:17:18can access China and all that depends what, depending where
- 1:17:20you want to go. And it's got a billion, some odd
- 1:17:24people and they can make anything.
- 1:17:26And, and I said, but I don't know anything about China.
- 1:17:28I don't know. Chinese says don't worry about
- 1:17:30it. We'll and Bhashandra Bansham
- 1:17:32helped. I remember my partner
- 1:17:34Hashirubin, he came to the airport and I'm going, I
- 1:17:35remember going up, going up the, the escalator and he's looking
- 1:17:38at me and he's like saying, and I'm doing the same thing.
- 1:17:41I don't know where we going. You know how scary it was.
- 1:17:43It's hard for people to understand.
- 1:17:45There's no such a thing as a cell phone, if you understand
- 1:17:48what that means. There's no such a thing even as
- 1:17:50a computer, a laptop. We had a big yeah, we didn't,
- 1:17:56but we understood somehow. Just go, go, go, go, just go.
- 1:18:01And I and I was pretty, I was a scary guy.
- 1:18:04I was not a, I was not a brave person ever in my life.
- 1:18:07This was very scary. And I got on this plane and the,
- 1:18:10the, the, the ride was sick. It was a 16 hour flight with all
- 1:18:13kinds of stop offs anyway. And I was able Borchem to, to,
- 1:18:19to, to buy gloves and I would, and I came back and every
- 1:18:23container that we bought in our container cost at that time it
- 1:18:28was $60,000 because there you would have 1000 cases in the
- 1:18:32container and each container each, each case was $60.00.
- 1:18:36And it was latex gloves. No such thing as a vinyl glove
- 1:18:39didn't exist. Nitro was not even in the
- 1:18:41planning stages. It was, it was like that, that
- 1:18:44was the thing. And what was very strange, what
- 1:18:47I found out was that there were certain very big, big medical
- 1:18:50supply companies, hospital supply companies, which by the
- 1:18:53way are all gone because the, a lot of them went out of business
- 1:18:57because of, because of AIDS. They had contracts with
- 1:19:01hospitals to sell them a case of gloves at a certain amount of
- 1:19:05money. And by the way, gloves were
- 1:19:08gloves you were able to buy for $60.00 a case of latex gloves on
- 1:19:12the market. These guys had one hospital
- 1:19:15health and hospital contracts that they had to supply this
- 1:19:18for, let's say for $55 and make their lousy $2.50.
- 1:19:22And if they don't supply it because they don't have the
- 1:19:26hospitals allowed to go out and buy it on the open market and
- 1:19:29build back the the companies. Can you imagine that carbon
- 1:19:35after carbon after carbon, these these places were topping?
- 1:19:38They weren't only selling them gloves, they were selling them
- 1:19:40so many others. Yeah, but the gloves.
- 1:19:41They crippled them. That crippled the number one
- 1:19:43item. And who brings gloves?
- 1:19:45These two stinkers that are that they just opened up a company
- 1:19:48and we're on the beer. They called the boys out.
- 1:19:50The boys from the pier, 'cause we were on Pier 41, we were
- 1:19:53called the boys from the pier. And I would come in that way.
- 1:19:56So I also found out why you needed money until that time.
- 1:20:00People will say to me they would they want us to invest.
- 1:20:01You want, you want us to invest in your company.
- 1:20:03What am I going to do with with the investment in those days?
- 1:20:06By the way, I want to tell you it's something shocking.
- 1:20:08We made we sold $50,000 of business the first month we went
- 1:20:12into business and our net profit was 25,000.
- 1:20:16Dollars. You can sell $1,000,000 today a
- 1:20:18month and if you make $25 on net profit, you're not going to make
- 1:20:22$25 on that. I'm I'm sorry.
- 1:20:24No one's going to let. You 50%.
- 1:20:27Net margin. Yeah, So the guy would say to
- 1:20:29me, I'll, I'll invest money. You got to.
- 1:20:31I don't need money. I need customers.
- 1:20:33I don't need money. They paid.
- 1:20:35Everybody paid. Why wouldn't they pay?
- 1:20:36They got paid from, right? Imagine such a thing.
- 1:20:41So I wouldn't, I don't understand what we need money
- 1:20:43for, right? And all of a sudden, every case,
- 1:20:47every container that was $60,000 and then when I bring it in here
- 1:20:51that day, there was never one of these big, big would come back
- 1:20:54with the check and I sold it for 110 certified check.
- 1:20:57I wouldn't take a check and he would tell me certified check.
- 1:21:01When did you guys open business? I said a year and a half ago,
- 1:21:04we're in business for over 100 years.
- 1:21:06What are you asking us for, Sir? I'm sorry, Sir.
- 1:21:08I was worried. I figured one I understood one
- 1:21:10of these checks goes bad and it's over.
- 1:21:12I go back to wherever I come from, you know, anyway, so I
- 1:21:17realized all of a sudden about the $60,000 that you want.
- 1:21:20So I called up those guys that said, remember I said how about
- 1:21:23now do you want to for every one of the $60,000 that you give me,
- 1:21:27I can bring back of in literally in four weeks I could bring you
- 1:21:31another $50,000 of profit which will split and that is how we
- 1:21:35built our business. Wow.
- 1:21:37This episode is sponsored by Jerry Medics just tell you like
- 1:21:43I'm like not interesting. It's beautiful.
- 1:21:45And when you you threw in the word prime source over there
- 1:21:48earlier, this was this was your beginning this.
- 1:21:50Was does this tie into somebody that recorded a happy birthday
- 1:21:54message for you in any way? No.
- 1:21:56Oh, this was just a story about your, your, your thought.
- 1:21:59Yeah, when he asked you the question, what it triggered your
- 1:22:02memory about this? No.
- 1:22:03No. Maybe.
- 1:22:04Has she had a no. No, because I know in the
- 1:22:06because I know ultimately there's so much look at this
- 1:22:08thing says none of your business podcasts, right, Come on, we're
- 1:22:11going to keep talking about my songs and which is the favorite
- 1:22:14song and this artist and that guy and the monitor say come on
- 1:22:17backwards. What's the story with
- 1:22:19healthcare? You've been to a village Old
- 1:22:21concert. How many?
- 1:22:22Many. As many as I could afford do.
- 1:22:25You have any connections in the non Jewish music industry?
- 1:22:28I have 0 interest 0. You don't appreciate some non I.
- 1:22:32Appreciate everything but I have no interest in can I and what.
- 1:22:35Do you appreciate in the non Jewish sector?
- 1:22:37All, all of it. If it's if it's great music, it
- 1:22:40doesn't matter. So country reggae.
- 1:22:42It's good. There's no there's not if it's
- 1:22:44good, but. I love, I love, I have.
- 1:22:46An album called The Eighth Note, which has every style if you
- 1:22:49have and if you've ever would listen to it, you'll it has
- 1:22:52every. I have a real reggae song on
- 1:22:54there. Actually, Matisyao started, he
- 1:22:58was he, he did his first duet with me at the time.
- 1:23:00And then suddenly he he kind of moved a little bit to the to the
- 1:23:04left and we. Which duet was it?
- 1:23:07Would I know? It al al Taimar, not al Taimar
- 1:23:09al al Tahdin. Yeah, I don't.
- 1:23:13I don't know if al tahdin I I I I.
- 1:23:20I got to find that song. I like that.
- 1:23:21Interesting. Rocky, could you send him the
- 1:23:23song? No.
- 1:23:24So I want to go back to what I was asking because I hope to get
- 1:23:26an answer from you that's relative to the question, you
- 1:23:29know, which is you've got so many messages.
- 1:23:32And I want, I, I really want to know from your perspective is if
- 1:23:35there's any that stood out that we can learn from.
- 1:23:37And I think it triggered your memory of all the people that
- 1:23:39were leaving you messages, all the business associates.
- 1:23:42There is one that really so I talked to you about Hong Kong,
- 1:23:47right, yes, so. That's where the trigger of the
- 1:23:49memory. That's where the triggers.
- 1:23:50Thank you and. We're back and we're back.
- 1:23:54One of these trips coming back from China from a city called
- 1:23:58Zhuhai, which is a place where you go with a boat from Hong
- 1:24:02Kong, because Hong Kong is connects it's contiguous.
- 1:24:05You can drive up the the new territories and straight into
- 1:24:08China. You can drive straight.
- 1:24:10Then there is a the, the, the whatever Yangtze River where you
- 1:24:15have to, you have to cross it with a, with a ferry, with a
- 1:24:18boat. It's like an hour.
- 1:24:19So this and you you land in a city called Zhuhai, which is a
- 1:24:22very a commercial city where they manufacture.
- 1:24:25This is the beginning of the by the way, every time you you
- 1:24:27wanted to China and you came out, it was a shot of making a
- 1:24:30Gamal every single time you came out of there because they could
- 1:24:32forgotten if you if you got lost there, that's it.
- 1:24:36Nobody would ever know who we're going to call who Ghostbusters
- 1:24:39anyway. So so I'm coming back and I'm
- 1:24:43I'm one of and I'm very, very nervous because at that time
- 1:24:45started the Palestinian crisis was around that time.
- 1:24:48There was, and I see this couple that are looking at me.
- 1:24:51The the boy is where the man is wearing a, a baseball hat and
- 1:24:54the, and the, and, and the woman is, is also, they're very, very
- 1:24:59beautiful looking people, very classy looking people, but very,
- 1:25:02very Middle Eastern. And they're looking at it.
- 1:25:05They're they're talking to each other.
- 1:25:06They're leaning on the, on the gun whale of the boat and
- 1:25:09they're looking, they're looking at over at me the whole time,
- 1:25:11like unabashedly. And I'm getting very
- 1:25:13uncomfortable that this guy, this part of the Jew and they
- 1:25:16figured for G out sake, let's say I'm going to throw him over
- 1:25:18the water. The Chinese river was the end of
- 1:25:20it. I literally had these stupid
- 1:25:21thoughts. And this went on and on and I'm
- 1:25:24waiting and then I don't see any land anywhere and I'm waiting
- 1:25:26for this Hong Kong to show up already.
- 1:25:29And all of a sudden I noticed from the from the corner of my
- 1:25:32eye, they're, they're coming to me.
- 1:25:33They're coming towards me. They come towards me and they
- 1:25:38ask me, you Jewish? And I figured, sure, this is, I
- 1:25:41put two and two together, you know, it's over.
- 1:25:44I said, yes, I'm Jewish. He says, well, where are you
- 1:25:47staying? I said, I'm staying in the Hong
- 1:25:50Kong Hilton. And why there is there is a
- 1:25:53there's Shabbat. This was like Thursday.
- 1:25:55There's a place where you can do Shabbat.
- 1:25:57I said there is a Kabat schliach remote Khayafson, who's Saudi.
- 1:26:02He's the one that opened up the entire Far East.
- 1:26:06Today there is millions of people already and but he is the
- 1:26:09cap. He is the general of that all
- 1:26:11like, like Rabbi Lazar opened up Russia, Rabbi Afsin opened up
- 1:26:15the Far East. Some people don't remember that
- 1:26:18anymore because it's so big already.
- 1:26:19But he is the father and he as a matter of fact, there was a
- 1:26:23hotel called the Hong Kong Hilton, which had room four O 1
- 1:26:27was the room that they had rented.
- 1:26:30And that was where the first kebab House of the Far East was.
- 1:26:34And I met him and he told me. He says yeah.
- 1:26:36And he says Yossi would you Friday night.
- 1:26:39I hope we'll see you by minion. Where Minion?
- 1:26:41What do you know? So he told me 4 O1 OK.
- 1:26:44So I told these guys. I said, look.
- 1:26:46Yeah, Yeah. Really.
- 1:26:46Where where are you? They come there on the other
- 1:26:48side of Hong Kong someplace. Is there a place maybe we can
- 1:26:51get a place where to be for Shabbat or we can come like
- 1:26:56that. I said, look, I'll tell you what
- 1:26:58when you come, I'll look you up with this with this rabbi out
- 1:27:01son. And we became very, very good
- 1:27:04friends this whole Shabbat. We, we became, you know, they
- 1:27:07spoke, they asked me a lot of questions about the Yiddish
- 1:27:09guide, him and her. I found out there were two
- 1:27:11single people. They were living together at the
- 1:27:14time. They were, you know, they were
- 1:27:18not, they were not connected very much to the Yiddish guide
- 1:27:21yet and so on. I had nothing to do with with
- 1:27:23Kiruv today by the everybody's in the kiruv.
- 1:27:27I don't know. I don't know what that is.
- 1:27:28I come from a world where you know, just OK, just stay with
- 1:27:31stay in your lane. I'm I'm very happy here.
- 1:27:33You know, like that was that I did a whole thing came to me
- 1:27:36later on in life and and they they spent Shabbos.
- 1:27:41They wherever I eat meals they can they ate by by Rabbi Afson
- 1:27:44and then lots of Shabbos. They said would can we take you
- 1:27:48out for a walk? Let's walk through the streets
- 1:27:50of Hong Kong. It was beautiful.
- 1:27:51Hong Kong is that time especially was it was owned by
- 1:27:54Britain. And then I notice that they're
- 1:27:56asking me questions about Ashqafa, all kinds of questions.
- 1:28:00Mushiya and the reason why I happened to be at that time in
- 1:28:04the right place because I'd been learning Ramchal's farm with the
- 1:28:07Rebbe for a bunch of years. It was very new at the time
- 1:28:10Ramchal came out. It was, it was translated by, by
- 1:28:16I forgot his name. He translated Hashem, he
- 1:28:18translated Asthuna. So we, we start today, the whole
- 1:28:21world is busy with it. But then it was beginning and I
- 1:28:23was very excited to share. And they were, they loved,
- 1:28:27apparently they were very cerebral.
- 1:28:28They were very bright people, very educated French, they're
- 1:28:33Frenchies by the people that they lived in Paris.
- 1:28:35And, and it got so far that I was going on Tuesday, that
- 1:28:42Tuesday, they asked me if it's OK, if they can, if they can
- 1:28:45drive me to the, they can go with me to the airport because
- 1:28:47they want to spend another two hours.
- 1:28:48They know I'm going to have two hours of wait.
- 1:28:50Can they spend another two hours with me?
- 1:28:53And I said sure. And and they sat with me for two
- 1:28:56hours again and again non-stop asking me question that you
- 1:28:58described about my life, about about what casitas is and every
- 1:29:02kind. She would throw a question from
- 1:29:03this side here and then he would interrupt and and ask throw a
- 1:29:06question. And we're getting closer and
- 1:29:08closer to the flight. And I'm saying the flight is to
- 1:29:10San Francisco. It's a 12/15 hour flight.
- 1:29:14They went, they had gone ahead and they had bought themselves
- 1:29:17tickets. They didn't tell me and they got
- 1:29:18me. No, no business class ticket.
- 1:29:20They just got the three front coach class tickets.
- 1:29:23I sat in the middle, the two of them sat on the side and I see
- 1:29:25that they're walking me to a plane and I'm saying, I mean,
- 1:29:28you got to go. No, no, no.
- 1:29:29So are we still walking you? That's the kind of people that
- 1:29:32they are very like very sneeze, but escorting nice, beautiful
- 1:29:37people, beautiful people, you know, very, very, very all kinds
- 1:29:41of you know that you can say that they dressed incredibly
- 1:29:43well, very expensively. They're that baseball hat was
- 1:29:46not that was not one of it was it was a Yankees cap designed
- 1:29:48by, you know, by 1. Clearly affluent.
- 1:29:51They were incredibly affluent, The sneakers.
- 1:29:53Today, everybody wear sneakers. Those days he was wearing
- 1:29:55sneakers, but his sneakers were Montana, which cost whatever.
- 1:29:59Anyway, I get to the plane and they're coming out to the plane,
- 1:30:03I suppose going, well, we're still going to be here.
- 1:30:05We, we asked, they said we can go on with you.
- 1:30:07And, and and they're sitting down with me.
- 1:30:10And then the plane is going to take off in about 1/2 hour, 45
- 1:30:13minutes. And I keep telling them, look,
- 1:30:14you're going to get there. Yeah, yeah, don't worry.
- 1:30:16A little while. And suddenly they put on their
- 1:30:18their seatbelts, their seatbelts and they're strapping.
- 1:30:21They're coming. They're here, she takes out a
- 1:30:24little one of these cassettes. You know, remember those little
- 1:30:27cassettes? Yes, one of these a 12 pack.
- 1:30:30She opens it up with her with her teeth and and and he brings
- 1:30:34out this little paper Cotter and he's talking to her in French.
- 1:30:37Give me, give me the tapes. And he's reaching over my back.
- 1:30:40They kept me going for 12 hours, non-stop, non-stop, non-stop,
- 1:30:46non-stop. And Fast forward, they got
- 1:30:51married and they got married, they found out exactly what the
- 1:30:55halakhas were and immediately they jumped into, they got into
- 1:30:59the halakhas and so on. And they have 18 other couples
- 1:31:05who were their best friends who became from because of them.
- 1:31:10Imagine this, right? And I was I officiated that
- 1:31:14their weddings got married in in Morocco and Casablanca and
- 1:31:17Marrakesh. And they took me, they flew me
- 1:31:19to places. Like I was always sitting over
- 1:31:21there, like the Golem over there was sitting, you know, I'm I was
- 1:31:23the rabbi, so to speak, nothing to do with music.
- 1:31:27Nothing Edna. They did not later when they
- 1:31:29found, oh, you write music. It's like years later.
- 1:31:31It was very This is the two of them.
- 1:31:35Unbelievable. That's crazy.
- 1:31:36They live, they're extraordinarily wealthy.
- 1:31:39They live, they live in Charlotte as they bought
- 1:31:41Argentina house. Argentina house was a, was a
- 1:31:43house that belonged to Argentina in 18180.
- 1:31:47Whatever. I think you had to pay $500,000
- 1:31:49just to be able to bid and then you couldn't change a single
- 1:31:52window. The, the, the house has one of
- 1:31:54these books. You'll never see a house like
- 1:31:56that anywhere. Like, I mean like every window
- 1:31:57has to be. You got to go to the original
- 1:31:59manufacturer, bring back the windows, every handle, every,
- 1:32:02you know. Anyway, he sits and learns day
- 1:32:05and night. He is Balma Kubel.
- 1:32:08He is. He's a holy person.
- 1:32:11You'll, you'll see him. It's it's the center.
- 1:32:13I'll send it to him also. You'll see.
- 1:32:15He's so shy. He thanks me for his whole life.
- 1:32:20He says how can I how can I even you know it's it's it's hard.
- 1:32:26It's hard to even it's hard, it's hard for me to to express
- 1:32:30you can't own you remember you asked me before how you
- 1:32:32connected. You can't own but what regards
- 1:32:35to the message. Fast forward, you want to deal
- 1:32:37with the messages, the messages. You never know when you can say
- 1:32:42a good word, a good word to A to a person and change worlds.
- 1:32:46Not, not, you know, Hashem showed me that time.
- 1:32:51You know, sometimes you do it and you don't get to see the the
- 1:32:53fruit of it, you know, but I got to see the fruit of it.
- 1:32:56You never know you really you the power that you have.
- 1:32:59If the moment is right like that happy birthday that he gave me
- 1:33:03before. If the moment is right and you
- 1:33:05say it with the and you with the right intent and it and the
- 1:33:10person's ready for it and it delivers you, you form a bomb
- 1:33:13that could change universes. We changed this universe.
- 1:33:17I mean, I, I look at him and he's 10 times.
- 1:33:20He was one of. His HE was one of the many
- 1:33:21messages that you got in general from HE.
- 1:33:24Was one out of 101. Out of hundreds and, and it's
- 1:33:27amazing that you were able to see all that encapsulated all
- 1:33:30that in that one message that he gave you.
- 1:33:32It brought you back that history.
- 1:33:33I can't imagine what that's like 300 times over.
- 1:33:36I'm just curious that that 12 hour recording, yes.
- 1:33:38Who has that which the? The whole trip.
- 1:33:41Recording. You got to get a hold of that
- 1:33:43recording. Yeah, but.
- 1:33:44No, no, no, they got to dig it. Up they never offered it so.
- 1:33:47We're going to Michael. It's, it's analog.
- 1:33:49There's no, there's no history record of anymore.
- 1:33:51I'll tell you what, what I'm taking away from this, what I'm
- 1:33:53really impressed by, it's really striking me is the fact that you
- 1:33:56actually engaged with them that very first moment that you met
- 1:33:59them and that you kept it going and that you allowed them to
- 1:34:02travel with you. And then on the plane and a lot
- 1:34:06of people, most people, definitely me, I'm like, I'll
- 1:34:10give you about 5 minutes of my attention and then I'm moving
- 1:34:12on. I'm here in business.
- 1:34:14I got stuff that is Bose quiet headphones exactly on.
- 1:34:16Purpose put on. Yeah, like to avoid people
- 1:34:19everybody knows on a plane, like you mind your own business.
- 1:34:22Don't ask me where I'm from. Don't ask me what I do.
- 1:34:24I know we're sitting right next to each other.
- 1:34:25I do the polite 5 minute hello, but I don't even do the hello.
- 1:34:28I do the hello. No, I'm very careful.
- 1:34:29I don't acknowledge that person. I don't.
- 1:34:31I sit back and I sit immediately and I make it very, very clear
- 1:34:34with my body language that we're about to travel four or five
- 1:34:37hours together. It's funny because we have
- 1:34:39nothing in common and don't get any ideas.
- 1:34:40But you were quite the opposite. And you know what a lesson, what
- 1:34:44a lesson to be that you're missing out potentially on some
- 1:34:47of the greatest moments in life and some of the biggest
- 1:34:49achievements that 20-30 years later, you get to see everything
- 1:34:55that happened in between that moment and how it just
- 1:34:58completely changed their world and potentially for their kids
- 1:35:01and for families members that are going to be built from this
- 1:35:05all because of your act of kindness for 12/15/20 hours that
- 1:35:08you did. It's just, I'm thinking back
- 1:35:10now, Michael, about we need to have our eyes open more.
- 1:35:14There's opportunity that's out there that we're missing out on
- 1:35:16because we're not opening our minds and because we're sucked
- 1:35:19into our own little worlds. And if we allow others in the
- 1:35:23world would be a better place for.
- 1:35:24And you're an amazing and thank you for sharing that story.
- 1:35:27What an excellent crazy story. It's it's just, it's mind
- 1:35:31boggling. So Ro congratulations to you, by
- 1:35:33the way, I'm such an amazing feat of putting so many videos
- 1:35:36to That's a crazy job, by the way, that in of itself it's a
- 1:35:40beautiful gift to be able to give to someone.
- 1:35:42I'm like, you know, I'm, I'm. The biggest honor of my life?
- 1:35:45Whatever. I gave my father another really
- 1:35:47special gift. She's.
- 1:35:48That I worked on for years, but this changed my life in such a
- 1:35:55significant way I can't even begin to tell you.
- 1:35:57Just putting this video together, but I want to add one
- 1:36:00thing first that my father was saying before about this
- 1:36:02incredible couple. What he's not telling you is
- 1:36:06that when they came back to America and brought another
- 1:36:09couple with them who were equally as incredible, they
- 1:36:13practically moved into our home for at least a year.
- 1:36:16I think every single. Job is every time to the degree.
- 1:36:20Not only that, my father bought jalabas.
- 1:36:23I don't know if you know what they are.
- 1:36:24That's what Moroccan religious Jews.
- 1:36:26We learned. We learned.
- 1:36:27All there's long roads for. Make them feel.
- 1:36:30Like all, there's mirrors. For all of us, for.
- 1:36:32Years, all the kids. Where my?
- 1:36:34Olds mirrors. Family.
- 1:36:35He was like, what is up with this family?
- 1:36:38Father comes, the boys come home from shul, the seven boys come
- 1:36:40there, they all go upstairs and my mother and I are already
- 1:36:43wearing our jalabas. And they all changed their life.
- 1:36:45Just to make them feel comfortable.
- 1:36:46They weren't. Even the pet.
- 1:36:47They weren't even. They moved to Israel already.
- 1:36:49Oh. Stop it.
- 1:36:50You incorporated it even while they were gone.
- 1:36:52Yeah, yeah. You can't just was a very that
- 1:36:56we still have. Well, yeah, I wanted my children
- 1:36:59to understand. You see, sadly, when I started
- 1:37:01travelling to Israel, I realized that there's a division between
- 1:37:04various, various races over there, which I didn't.
- 1:37:07We don't understand it from here.
- 1:37:09We don't understand it because we're the house we're and also
- 1:37:11today it's not, it's not as intense as it was in those days.
- 1:37:15And the most beautiful, classiest, warmest, most amazing
- 1:37:20people that I had that I met in Israel were Eden, from from the
- 1:37:24Moroccan world and from the what kind of what kind of human
- 1:37:27beings, what kind of they? Have a beautiful culture.
- 1:37:29It's it's a we're kind of cooking what kind of food?
- 1:37:32Arguably the most traced back right in the.
- 1:37:35No, not necessarily. The Middle Eastern culture.
- 1:37:37We all have, you know, it's a very interesting thing.
- 1:37:40If I've had one more thing, you know the the world questions,
- 1:37:44where is Fardim and and Ashkenazim?
- 1:37:46Well, where is it? Where did that come from?
- 1:37:47Moshebena was this Fardi? Where was that?
- 1:37:50Split. Where was that split?
- 1:37:51Right. So after research I realized
- 1:37:53something amazing. There was no What happened was
- 1:37:55Rav Hai Goon was the last Rasha Shiva in bubble.
- 1:37:59Bubble had a yeshiva from the first carbon based on English
- 1:38:03that the yeshiva was the longest standing yeshiva in history.
- 1:38:06It was 1500 years when it got so bad in in in Iraq at the time in
- 1:38:11in Boble that Eden could no longer make a living do
- 1:38:13business. Ravi Ravi gun was the last the
- 1:38:17last gun he realized he has to close the door of the yeshiva.
- 1:38:21So he told the he told the the the the boys in the yeshiva who
- 1:38:24were some of the who's the greatest the greatest.
- 1:38:27These were the before they reshine him.
- 1:38:29These were in the guy in the world.
- 1:38:30And he says, look, we no longer can do, but I think we have to
- 1:38:33leave this place. And what happened was half the
- 1:38:37the, the Shiva went N through Turkey and into Europe and wound
- 1:38:43up in in what's called Ashkenaz, which was Germany, France.
- 1:38:47France is Ashkenaz by the way. Rashi was Ashkenaz the Ashkenaz
- 1:38:53and Rashi's French. But anyway, people think French
- 1:38:55is is farting, it's not it. Kind of is now.
- 1:38:58And then the other half of the guys went, went South and they
- 1:39:01went through north of Egypt, north of Tunisia, Algeria, and
- 1:39:05they found those in Morocco. And then they passed the Straits
- 1:39:08of Gibraltar into Spain. And the problem was that on the
- 1:39:11top of Spain separating Europe, there is the Andes mountain
- 1:39:15range, which is uncrossable. And what would happen was Ravi,
- 1:39:18as long as he lived, he would go one Yontiff, he would visit us
- 1:39:22to meet him up north in, in in the European area and 11
- 1:39:26Yontiff, he would visit through Spain.
- 1:39:29And this is the way it happened. And, and as the years went, when
- 1:39:31he passed, eventually they started having garden.
- 1:39:35No, that's the rabbi said this. No, he said that.
- 1:39:37No, he said this. No, he said that.
- 1:39:38Before you know it, that's it. There is no such a thing.
- 1:39:41It's it's not a real, it's not a real division.
- 1:39:44It's thanks. For explaining that by the way,
- 1:39:46I. Made I made a joke, Rav Hai
- 1:39:48goon. I mean, I'm not if you if you're
- 1:39:50allowed to say that, but Rav hai, the reason it's called Rav
- 1:39:52Hai goon because each one said hi.
- 1:39:54No, he said this. No, he said this.
- 1:39:56No, he said this. How is this in, in, in, in
- 1:40:00Aramaic, you know? Yeah.
- 1:40:01Hey, So that's. ChatGPT knew that you're fluent
- 1:40:04in Aramaic, Yeah, so they picked that one.
- 1:40:06You know what they picked up on that one?
- 1:40:08I love this thing. I was just you were going to say
- 1:40:10that. Oh my God.
- 1:40:11She Michael. Michael.
- 1:40:13Yeah, yeah, Sometimes it happens podcast.
- 1:40:15Sometimes we have a kumbaya you. Know, I was just looking at
- 1:40:17rookie and I was saying, you know, I was looking at like,
- 1:40:20there comes a time in our life that Hashem gives you a gift.
- 1:40:23Yeah, you got to open your hands and take it.
- 1:40:25You know, I I have a friend of mine.
- 1:40:26I'm going to call him out here. His name is Pinky Wiederman.
- 1:40:28Sorry, Pinky. I'm going to breaking vending.
- 1:40:30Breaking vending. He got, he got a bracha from
- 1:40:33someone and he physically opens his hands and I'm watching him
- 1:40:37do this motion physically of accepting, receiving the
- 1:40:40blessing. And I realized that the physical
- 1:40:43part of it, it manifested into the emotional, into the
- 1:40:46spiritual, and he was just accepting it.
- 1:40:49It's. Yeah, I just.
- 1:40:52And you never know when you get that blessing that because it
- 1:40:54says in the condom, Shane Le Shaw, everybody has his moment
- 1:40:57and if he's got it, then he blesses you.
- 1:41:00That's right. So I'm saying thank gosh, Shem,
- 1:41:02for this moment that we have. I'm opening it up physically,
- 1:41:05emotionally, spiritually, mentally.
- 1:41:07That rookie's here in the room. With you and you have this
- 1:41:09incredible relationship. And incredible.
- 1:41:12I envy that. I hope that one day I'll have
- 1:41:13that with with my daughters. You got to be.
- 1:41:15You got a later. Age to.
- 1:41:16Be a life to you. It'll be up to you.
- 1:41:19It's not entirely up to you. It's a good a lot of things have
- 1:41:21to fall into place as well. You need a lot of mazel alone.
- 1:41:24The way he agrees with. The commanders amount of mazel,
- 1:41:26but you still need it. It's up to you.
- 1:41:27Any of you other kids, other children picked up on your
- 1:41:30passion and. Passion of music.
- 1:41:32Of music and a continuing of that.
- 1:41:33In terms of love, In terms of music, love or yeah.
- 1:41:36But in terms of playing or writing, yeah, I, I once heard
- 1:41:42something from, from somebody that if, and I don't know if
- 1:41:45it's true, but they said that if, if a person is very much in
- 1:41:48a certain area, it's the children who are amazing
- 1:41:53children. They they want to go on their
- 1:41:57own. They want to be, they want to be
- 1:41:58successful in something else. And the grandchildren don't have
- 1:42:02that feeling anymore. They come back and they come
- 1:42:04back. That's very interesting.
- 1:42:05So we have we have this rookie has children that are are
- 1:42:08musical. You know what we have in front
- 1:42:10of us, though I, I wouldn't call it anything short of harmonious.
- 1:42:13The fact that rookie is here and you're here.
- 1:42:14So I want to ask you, Ruhi, because you're here on the mic
- 1:42:17and I'm going to take this opportunity and ask you what was
- 1:42:19your favorite from the 300 or pick something that stood out to
- 1:42:22you that you could share with us.
- 1:42:24We're in fact, let's have another podcast come back for
- 1:42:27another two hours. But but if you could share with
- 1:42:29us, Ruhi, please. It's not a particular except for
- 1:42:33anything, but when I started this project a little over a
- 1:42:36year, I would say about February of the previous year.
- 1:42:39And my my father's English birthday is in the end of May
- 1:42:42and it's your birthday's Afidi's at the shoe S.
- 1:42:45So you know, I just knew it's going to take time.
- 1:42:47I didn't dream it would turn into this.
- 1:42:49I thought I got 30-40 clips, you know, but it just got bigger and
- 1:42:51bigger. And literally before I started
- 1:42:55the project, I literally took a moment I'd avitash them.
- 1:42:57And I said please. I know it's up to you, whatever
- 1:43:00you decide, but I don't want every clip to just be about his
- 1:43:03music. I want it to be about who my
- 1:43:06father is as a person, as an individual, as the impact he's
- 1:43:10made on not only Kylie saw as a whole, but even more so on so
- 1:43:15many individuals in a private way that he'll never, he won't
- 1:43:18say. He won't say bad himself.
- 1:43:19So I'm gonna tell you that I have the 207 clips that made it
- 1:43:24onto the video. Forget about the ones he hasn't
- 1:43:25even seen yet. I would say at least fifty of
- 1:43:29them at least. OK, and I was bawling just
- 1:43:34watching them. OK, We're all about how one up
- 1:43:39to maybe 3 conversations with my father changed their life in a
- 1:43:44capacity that they never missed a day of learning from that day
- 1:43:48on until current. I'm talking about anybody in the
- 1:43:52ages of 50 all the way up to mid 70s and that to me, that was
- 1:44:01what I was dreaming for. Well, but that's another.
- 1:44:03That's another program. Yeah, that was.
- 1:44:05That's what I wanted to say about the video my.
- 1:44:08Well, what people didn't see, what people didn't see in the
- 1:44:10Gershi Moskowitz podcast that we released now is that when he
- 1:44:14called you, which was very random out of the blue.
- 1:44:17I have to apologize about that. I I think we're changing our
- 1:44:19policy a little bit when it comes to certain.
- 1:44:21People. But he did it.
- 1:44:21It was the right way. Oh, sure, of course it was the
- 1:44:24right way. I started telling you this
- 1:44:26earlier that the way you had Gershi make the the introduction
- 1:44:32and the way he did it was the right way to for it to be done.
- 1:44:36If somebody would have asked me, would you be, would you consider
- 1:44:40doing a podcast with people that you know, they're, they're kind
- 1:44:42of in your industry and I don't know if you know them well.
- 1:44:45And I don't know whether I would be not there not could have
- 1:44:49anything against it, but I wouldn't have been excited and
- 1:44:52interested in it, you know, and but the way Gershi did it, was
- 1:44:55he he you know, he puts he has that face of his and he put it
- 1:45:00in front of the camera. He was authentic.
- 1:45:01Well, thank you. Yeah, it was genuine.
- 1:45:03It was in real time, you know, The adrenaline was rushing, you
- 1:45:05know, and there was. I want to say first of all,
- 1:45:08thank you to Gershi. And I want to mention for those
- 1:45:09who didn't see, you were learning, you were, you were
- 1:45:13learning. It was and you had a face on
- 1:45:16that I saw on video that was in another hemisphere.
- 1:45:20You're in a spot. And and what Rookie is saying,
- 1:45:22it's so true and I'm curious about that.
- 1:45:24It's that's you're, you're a part of your world, obviously.
- 1:45:27That's my world. That is your world.
- 1:45:28That's my world. That that is the way, that that
- 1:45:30is where that's the journey and the and the stops among the way
- 1:45:34are the texts that I find along this way, but it's really, it
- 1:45:38comes from there. Absolutely beautiful.
- 1:45:40I love that. Thank God.
- 1:45:41You know, we have to wrap it up, but there's two things I want to
- 1:45:43do before we leave. So, you know, not for nothing we
- 1:45:48do. We're not disappointed.
- 1:45:49Were you? Disappointed.
- 1:45:51Let me tell you something, this was really awesome for me more
- 1:45:55than it was for Michael. Even though Michael is a super
- 1:45:57fan of yours, he lives and breathes music and you're like
- 1:46:00the you are just the actual the high up echel launches of music.
- 1:46:04Like you are part of that history.
- 1:46:06The Mount Everest just now. I literally feel that but.
- 1:46:09For me, I want you to know from and a lot of people listening
- 1:46:11that are my age and in my circle, you were always somewhat
- 1:46:15of, you know, a distant person, like a name that we've heard of,
- 1:46:19But I got to sit with you. Like there's so much depth to
- 1:46:21you. You're you're a real person.
- 1:46:23It goes way beyond music, your accomplishments in life, which
- 1:46:25is the family man and as a business owner and like, you
- 1:46:28know, I think a lot of people are going to be Wow, Justin
- 1:46:30Green is is so many layers to him and and it's it's
- 1:46:33inspirational. It really is because, you know,
- 1:46:35you couldn't, you know, be not just, you know, in one lane.
- 1:46:38And that's what you're, you know, that's what you're going
- 1:46:40to be known for, but you're so diverse and so many aspects to
- 1:46:43what we're on cover here. I appreciate you opening up.
- 1:46:45I appreciate you allowing me to see your personality and
- 1:46:47allowing me to just, you know, get to know you.
- 1:46:49And I think that's what our viewers are going to really
- 1:46:51appreciate. And I think more people in your
- 1:46:53position that have that have been out there for so long to
- 1:46:56humanize themselves and to be to be more in touch with with
- 1:47:00everyone so we could all see we're all in this together.
- 1:47:02We're all part of the same circle, part of the same team.
- 1:47:05I think it's beautiful. A.
- 1:47:05Great joy in life is when two people connect.
- 1:47:09So you're a new, you're a new person for me.
- 1:47:11You're a new world for me. So I'm going home tonight a
- 1:47:15much, much richer person than I than I, than I was on the way
- 1:47:18in. There you go.
- 1:47:19Clearly. I mean, Michael came out to
- 1:47:21welcome me in the car and I complimented him on his, on his
- 1:47:25Cologne on this. I said I took a shower for you.
- 1:47:29I was really mad. I'm not shy to to share the fact
- 1:47:33that I was super, super excited to see you and I literally took
- 1:47:36a shower for you. And, you know, I didn't get a
- 1:47:39manicure though. And I'm looking at your nails.
- 1:47:41You have nice nails, by the way. Yeah.
- 1:47:43I mean, you do manicures. Sure, sure.
- 1:47:46It's like what, every month? Two weeks?
- 1:47:49Month you You were born in the woods.
- 1:47:55I love that as. You know we.
- 1:47:59We spoke about earlier about your music message and we did
- 1:48:02say that and we spoke a little bit about business, not not too
- 1:48:04much, but just enough flavour for you to have a message in
- 1:48:06business. And you mentioned to me
- 1:48:08something about what your mother said to you.
- 1:48:09It really moved me and was off the ear and I would love for you
- 1:48:12to have the opportunity to share that with the audience.
- 1:48:14OK, but I didn't understand that when she said it to me at the
- 1:48:17time. But as the years went by, you
- 1:48:22know, that's a message that we once had a discussion about
- 1:48:25winning, about buying Lotto. And I remember it was that time
- 1:48:28that Lotto was very big, Like it was one of those weeks that
- 1:48:32people hadn't won. And, and I asked her, look, I'm
- 1:48:36thinking of I'm taking $5 and buying 5 because everybody
- 1:48:39around me and shul, everybody was saying, come on, it's, it's
- 1:48:41$100 million, five dollars. I mean, what?
- 1:48:44So you lost $5, What's a big deal?
- 1:48:46And but then you could win. And then I asked my mother, what
- 1:48:49do you think? She says you could spend the
- 1:48:54$5.00, but God forbid if you win, you're it's what are you
- 1:48:57going to do then? So I said, So what does that
- 1:49:00mean? What I'm going to do?
- 1:49:00I I have a she says, but what's considered a a great salary, a
- 1:49:06great amount of money to make to be able to bring home, you know,
- 1:49:10at the time, at the time I remember, how can I know 10 kids
- 1:49:13already? Leanne Horror.
- 1:49:16They should all be, isn't And five, I said 5, I can bring home
- 1:49:20500,000. That was the dream, $500,000 a
- 1:49:23year if I could bring it home. And some will have money for all
- 1:49:26the camps and all the schools and everything.
- 1:49:29So she says, imagine he was Bashir to you to make $500,000
- 1:49:32this year and then you won $100 million.
- 1:49:37Now what that means is before Rosh Hashanah of next year, you
- 1:49:39have to lose 999 and a half million dollars.
- 1:49:46So let's talk about like this. Let's talk about what kind of a
- 1:49:48family life you have a business, you have people that are
- 1:49:52working. Imagine what it's like when, God
- 1:49:54forbid, a person's sees the, the deterioration of that because
- 1:49:59you a person gets what I was bashed.
- 1:50:01You can't get a penny more than what's bashed really.
- 1:50:04And believe me, I want to tell you something a lot of young
- 1:50:07people don't know that they think there's a way to think.
- 1:50:09You know, God has a Beckettcher and he'd, you know, the
- 1:50:11Becketcher in the back has these back pockets.
- 1:50:14And if when he's not looking, you can stick your hand down in
- 1:50:17there. You can grab out a whole bunch
- 1:50:18of money that he, that Cavallochol did not notice.
- 1:50:22No such a thing. Every penny is there.
- 1:50:24So you just said that $500,000 would be wonderful.
- 1:50:28So God forbid you'd win 100 million.
- 1:50:31Imagine a life where a person loses.
- 1:50:33Nice. So be happy with your $500,000 I
- 1:50:37that's what I think she's it's. One of the best messages I've
- 1:50:39ever received and honestly it's it's like, you know, Daenu of
- 1:50:43making a podcast like this just to get a message out there like
- 1:50:45that. Who before I let you go, who's
- 1:50:48your pick that we're calling on the phone right now.
- 1:50:50It should be a good guess for the podcast somebody.
- 1:50:53There somebody that would be able to stand up to the two of
- 1:50:58you. You don't want somebody wilting.
- 1:51:00That bad? It will think, will think like
- 1:51:021/2 an hour saying I, I, I have to, I have to have to go out.
- 1:51:06I'm sure you could come up with somebody.
- 1:51:09Is there anyone that pops into your head?
- 1:51:11That can also enhance our lives and our listeners lives for
- 1:51:14growth, personally, professionally, and you've done
- 1:51:17a stellar job at that. People are going to have tough
- 1:51:19shoes to fill after this one, but you've really like you said,
- 1:51:22you're going home tonight. You feel richer because I, I, I
- 1:51:25feel richer as well. I, I feel more full.
- 1:51:27I feel full, I feel full. I feel like I'm going to go home
- 1:51:29and like, I feel good about myself.
- 1:51:30Like this was, this was, I mean. If someone comes to your mind,
- 1:51:33great, if not, it's OK, but. I have, I have somebody who I
- 1:51:37who, if you'd be willing, I think it would be very.
- 1:51:39Who is that? His name is Effie brand.
- 1:51:42He lives in give a time. He comes to he comes to here
- 1:51:45very often. He's one of the he's the one who
- 1:51:47designed the software for she'll which would that work, which
- 1:51:54would then would then became a saleable company to when they
- 1:51:58made their sale. So he he designs the most is
- 1:52:02called limbs here there limbs lab information management
- 1:52:05software. That is the that's you know, you
- 1:52:08know when a person take takes a blood test and then it goes into
- 1:52:11a 2 and then prints out a barcode that you put it into the
- 1:52:14machine and it it travels and it comes out in the other side,
- 1:52:17gives you all, all the results, calls the doctor or sends his
- 1:52:20guy an e-mail. You know one of those that it's
- 1:52:22called, it's a very, very big, he's one of the top he out
- 1:52:26OF160180 hospitals, labs in Israel.
- 1:52:29I think A150160 have his soft software.
- 1:52:33He would have been an American that would have closed them down
- 1:52:35already because it would be antitrust.
- 1:52:36He's in Israel though, so you can't wake him up now.
- 1:52:38You can't wake him up now. I'm saying probably not, but you
- 1:52:42can. You can, you can ask him to join
- 1:52:44us. I would love that the.
- 1:52:45Smartest person that I know. Wow, that's high praises.
- 1:52:49Yeah, so he so he went to MIT and and he is he was a a jumped
- 1:52:54out of airplanes in, in in the 73 war.
- 1:52:57He's and he's just a wonderful loves music and loves my music
- 1:53:01and loves to learn and loves. I'll tell you will be also.
- 1:53:04I'm excited to have him on. If you can get him on, that'll
- 1:53:06be fantastic. Thank you so much.
- 1:53:07He knows every every Beatles song.
- 1:53:09He knows the lyric of every Hebrew song.
- 1:53:11He knows the he. Is he's I'm excited as we wrap
- 1:53:14up here, I want to echo what Oshi said and, and really thank
- 1:53:17you again for coming and really sharing with us a side of you
- 1:53:20that I don't think anyone's really heard before.
- 1:53:22And it's really I'm, I'm just honored.
- 1:53:24Thank you. And I really, I really feel
- 1:53:26great about. It I've gotten from you guys as
- 1:53:28much as you've gotten. From you know.
- 1:53:29What I'm I'm not being, I'm not being just reciprocal, I'm
- 1:53:33telling you. I appreciate that.
- 1:53:34I appreciate. That time I didn't look at my
- 1:53:36don't. Forget to like it.
- 1:53:37Subscribe, comment, get involved.
- 1:53:39Thank you to the Prime Source production team, Steph, Will,
- 1:53:42and everyone behind the scenes. We're doing great things.
- 1:53:45We're growing. Looking forward to our next
- 1:53:47episode. That's a wrap.
- 1:53:49Wow, wow.
