- 0:00Up next foil the football Huskies trip to Houston a date with the Rice Owls,
- 0:04and coverage begins at three thirty with Bob Joyce, the Heart Auto Group
- 0:07countdown to kick off. Then Wayne Norman, Adam Giardino and myself we'll bring
- 0:11it the game broadcast at five here along the Yukon Sports Networking online be at
- 0:15the Varsity Network app and the Varsity Network dot Com. Back with Jamara for
- 0:19a few more minutes. We'll be joined by Dalmont Gordine a little later on
- 0:23and Cam Rowans, the wide receiver of the Huskies. Coach. Quick thought
- 0:27on Dalmont and that defensive line, I mean, that's the strength of this
- 0:31team. And you've been able to control the other team's rushing attack here the
- 0:35last few weeks. How important is that to your overall defensive effort to have
- 0:40your d lineman having these kind of games, Well, it's critical. You
- 0:44have to stop the run. You can't let a team be two dimensional.
- 0:48And then when you stop the run, you got eliminate the big plays.
- 0:50And as you know, that's you know, that was the problem on Saturday.
- 0:54But without the ability to stop the run, you know they got they
- 0:58got you either way. You know, our defensive line plays well. You
- 1:03know, we ask our linebackers and our secondary support in the run as well.
- 1:06You know, everyone's got a responsibility. So it's a real group effort,
- 1:08just like RUSSI. Just like pass coverage is a is a group effort.
- 1:12You know, you need pass rush, you need good coverage, you
- 1:15need linebackers in position underneath. So defense is you know, I think sometimes
- 1:22we we we give too much credit or too much blame to one group when
- 1:27something's going right or wrong. We're defensive. Defensive football is the ultimate team
- 1:33proposition. It really is, you know. And so man, I don't
- 1:37disagree with you. The d lines is a good group, but it's a
- 1:41function of all eleven playing well together that's going to make you successful. Yeah,
- 1:46for a minute, I thought I was talking to Pete Carrolldy, a
- 1:48Seahawks coach. They were work and rolled over the Giants, sacking Daniel Jones
- 1:53ten times. Oh I felt so bad that would happened. I didn't know
- 1:56that. Oh, oh, Jim, it was bad. I gotta say
- 1:59tis. Oh they emptied the stadium, it was and they random football.
- 2:04That's what got me on this track. They random football. And then you
- 2:07know they threw it when they needed to, et cetera. But they were
- 2:10harassing Daniel Jones, a quarterback. Hey had no time. I'm telling you
- 2:14a second and a half. You better get rid of the ball or you're
- 2:16on your back. That's how bad when you stuck the run and you make
- 2:21a team one dimensional. Especially in the NFL where team teams are so tendencied
- 2:25and points are hard to come by, you can just pin years back and
- 2:30go after a quarterback when you get him in that situation where they can't run
- 2:34the ball. In college football, with all the RPOs and the zone reads
- 2:38and the goofy crazy things offensive coordinators come up with, and the tempo offenses,
- 2:45you know, it's not easy. It's it's easier to get back into
- 2:47a game than it is in the NFL, where teams are huddling and you
- 2:52know the clock isn't stopping as much, and so you can get a team
- 2:57in a situation where they aren't having success running. You got a little bit
- 3:00of a lead man. You just turned the dogs loose. Yeah they did.
- 3:06Boy, that was ugly. I gotta I gotta say you're fortunate.
- 3:08I mean you you coached with your dad Jim Morrison, the guy, three
- 3:13time Coach of the Year, one of the great NFL guys that we've seen,
- 3:17and I know you speak with him on a weekly, maybe a daily
- 3:21basis. I'm curious what he's been saying or what do he's had to say
- 3:24about the last couple of weeks. You know, Huskies have been close here
- 3:28two in the last three weeks, could have won these games. And I'm
- 3:30just interested what his take might be because he's the kind of guy that has
- 3:34seen pretty much everything. When he gives you a call, what's he what's
- 3:38he given you? It's it kind of varies, you know, earlier the
- 3:45season. You know, after the NC State game, you know, you
- 3:46guys are fighting hard. They're a good team. You know, uh,
- 3:51Georgia State guy, Damn you lost your quarterback, you lost your tight end.
- 3:53You know how it's take on you gotta keep fighting, Fiu. He
- 3:58wasn't really happy with the You know some things there, Duke. You know,
- 4:02you played a damn good team, fought your ass off. That quarterback's
- 4:05really good. You guys stopped the run. Blah blah blah. This week,
- 4:09I got a text right after the game and he said, you didn't
- 4:14lose that game because of the blocked extra point. If you want to talk
- 4:17about what I saw, give me a call. And I said, man,
- 4:23so I wish. I actually waited till Sunday morning because I wasn't really
- 4:27in the mood to talk to anybody. And I called him and he goes,
- 4:31you know why he lost that game? And I said, I do,
- 4:33Dad, because it wasn't because of the blocked extra point. And I
- 4:35said, I know, Dad. He said, well, then what was
- 4:38it? I said, it was those four passing? What the hell is
- 4:40going on back there? You know, Jimmy, you got to get that,
- 4:43you know, get that fixed. I'm like, Dad, I know,
- 4:45you know, we've identified the problem and we're working to fix it.
- 4:47And you know, he didn't really sugarcoat it for me. You know,
- 4:51hey, when I'll tell you what now, when I had to work for
- 4:55him and I was the defensive back coach, oh my goodness, and we
- 4:58wouldn't have a good game. It was not fun to be his son.
- 5:01You know. He just gives me kind of more big picture advice now,
- 5:06other than this week, he didn't he didn't like a couple of those deep
- 5:11balls, obviously, And I told him. I didn't. I didn't either,
- 5:13not reassured him. So I know this. He's fired up about Take
- 5:16one, you know. And it's interesting because after Take one's second game,
- 5:23he said that kid's gonna be fine. He said he's gonna be fine.
- 5:26You you wait, he's learning, he's going to be a good player.
- 5:29And he's right, you know. He said he just needs to play.
- 5:30He hadn't. He's the one he told me, because he hadn't played a
- 5:32full game in over four years. Said I didn't really think of that.
- 5:36I'd do it, but it wasn't at the top of my mind. Yeah,
- 5:42all right, about a minute left with Jim Mora here coach quick thought
- 5:45on on this Rice team. Their quarterback JT Daniels throwing for eleven touchdowns thirteen
- 5:50touchdowns I think in five games now four interceptions. What kind of quarterback is
- 5:56this? What are we looking at? Here? A damn good one.
- 5:59I recruit him, actually met him in eighth when he was an eighth grader.
- 6:02He came up to a UCLA camp when I was the coach and almost
- 6:06offered him as an eighth grader. Didn't saw him playing in high school A
- 6:12lot one of the best arm talent quarterbacks I've ever seen at the high school
- 6:16level. You know, he's had a good career. He's bounced around a
- 6:20little bit, but he's still had a good career. He can make every
- 6:23throw that that you need a quarterback to make. He can throw off platform,
- 6:28he can change his arm slots and be accurate. He's smart, he
- 6:31doesn't make poor decisions. He doesn't throw the bond to coverage. He's able
- 6:34to avoid the stack. I mean as much as they passed, as only
- 6:38the sack ten times in five games, which is pretty impressive. He's not
- 6:42a runner, but he can get you some yards and he can slide around
- 6:45in the pocket and stay alive. So I've I've known this kid since eighth
- 6:49grade. I have great respect for him as a player. I think he's
- 6:54tough as nails, you know. I think that he's been been very resilient,
- 6:59and I think it'll be a great challenge going against this guy. Yeah,
- 7:03he's had two four hundred yard games against USF on the road and against
- 7:08Houston two. Coach, we appreciate it and the best of luck this weekend.
- 7:13We'll get him. We'll be there with you. Thanks again, Mike.
- 7:15I'll see you. Take care buddy. All right. That's Jim Morin
- 7:19and that's the Yukon football coaches, so stay tuned. We meet with cam
- 7:25Ross when we return and Dalmont Gore dine from Liarfield
