- 0:00Speaker 1: Six matches of the World Cup, first time it's ever
- 0:02Speaker 1: been here in Seattle. On the first one today at noon.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Belgium and Egypt.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good morning, Chris, Good morning Greg Bell. Happy Monday to
- 0:09Speaker 2: you as well, sir.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Big Monday man. Good weekend, Yes, weekend hiking, no hiking.
- 0:15Speaker 2: We got out on the football field, which was nice,
- 0:18Speaker 2: and competed and yelled and did all the things you're
- 0:20Speaker 2: supposed to do. I didn't shake hands after winning, I'll
- 0:23Speaker 2: be honest, but nonetheless, it was fun just being out
- 0:25Speaker 2: there and enjoying some sun because it was really a
- 0:28Speaker 2: really hot weekend for sure. And then I ended up
- 0:30Speaker 2: going for a nice little run after football as well, so.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I got a little double duo. Look at that. Yeah,
- 0:36Speaker 3: I was like, you know, hands because you were mad.
- 0:38Speaker 2: No, if I lose, I really don't talk to people
- 0:40Speaker 2: have to losing like I'm not. I'm not gonna be
- 0:43Speaker 2: honest and be like, oh yeah, I'd say with I
- 0:45Speaker 2: kind of walk off the field very pissed.
- 0:47Speaker 3: You might need to work on that, man. That's okay.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I'll text them later or something, you know, But in
- 0:53Speaker 2: the heat of the moment, leave me alone.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You just beat me.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not here to congratulate you on winning,
- 0:59Speaker 2: even though some people try to be petty him, like
- 1:00Speaker 2: a Chris give me a hug or dap me up, broke.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Get my face.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I'm not in the mood right now, especially if I
- 1:06Speaker 2: you know, I know why we lost and it's just
- 1:09Speaker 2: like bruh. So nonetheless, though, Greg, I was victorious on
- 1:13Speaker 2: Saturday and it was a beautiful day, so I could
- 1:16Speaker 2: not complain You're victorious, victorious our team one. Well, I
- 1:23Speaker 2: was just poking fun at everyone, getting on women yam
- 1:25Speaker 2: before walking off the court, and I'm like, you know,
- 1:26Speaker 2: I can't.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Don't blame him. I kind of don't.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I can only imagine losing and who knows, right the
- 1:32Speaker 2: cameras only show you that.
- 1:33Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Maybe he went in there after they're partying and said, hey, congratulations.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I'm not sure if I went, at least on TV.
- 1:41Speaker 2: He did walk off the court and a lot of
- 1:43Speaker 2: people were up in arms and poor sport, and I'm like,
- 1:45Speaker 2: you know what, it doesn't need to be a rule.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Is it nice that he could have stayed out there
- 1:50Speaker 2: and shook hands and kissed babies? Sure, but he didn't
- 1:53Speaker 2: do it on camera. Maybe he did out off camera.
- 1:57Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I doubt it, but I don't think it's a big
- 2:00Speaker 2: do I won't. I won't rip the kid for that,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and he's gonna learn. He's gonna learn from this. Maybe
- 2:05Speaker 2: ten years from now he will have an issue of
- 2:08Speaker 2: someone not shaking his hand or he won't. We'll never know,
- 2:10Speaker 2: because I think he's gonna win at least one championship.
- 2:13Speaker 2: So we'll see what the future holds for the young man.
- 2:15Speaker 2: But congratulations to the New York Flipping Knicks. Greg, you
- 2:19Speaker 2: called it before it even happened.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I did man in April. That's my team. They're gonna
- 2:24Speaker 3: do it, and you were right. Now I need to
- 2:25Speaker 3: say that about the Mariners. That's my team and they're
- 2:29Speaker 3: gonna do it. Well. They will.
- 2:31Speaker 1: There you go four and six on a ten game,
- 2:33Speaker 1: but they're still the first place. They'll be fine thanks
- 2:38Speaker 1: to where they are and what the vision they're in.
- 2:41Speaker 1: On the show today with Tons in the World Cup.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Here from Jimmy's on First a Categy corner from Loomenfield,
- 2:45Speaker 1: they're already up.
- 2:47Speaker 3: The scene is pretty cool. I mean it is a
- 2:50Speaker 3: melting pot.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I've got Mexico jerseys and France jerseys, US jerseys have plenty,
- 2:55Speaker 1: of course. We'll talk about the US men's national team
- 2:58Speaker 1: and how that for one winn aains Paraguay, which men
- 3:01Speaker 1: Friday night, many people think was maybe the best World
- 3:04Speaker 1: Cup performance start to finish ever for a US team
- 3:08Speaker 1: dominant on Friday Night, and how that maybe has galvanized
- 3:12Speaker 1: the casual sports.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Fans around this tournament.
- 3:14Speaker 1: We talked to mans Vida Mareer Cascadi of Sports and Net,
- 3:17Speaker 1: lifelong Seattle soccer guy from back when he played at
- 3:21Speaker 1: Seattle in Roosevelt High School. He's been a coach, he's
- 3:24Speaker 1: an official, he's currently a middle school coach. He's going
- 3:27Speaker 1: to join me at ten to twenty to talk about
- 3:29Speaker 1: that US win, the US team in particular, and about
- 3:32Speaker 1: the scene the tournament overview. Six matches again, the US
- 3:37Speaker 1: winning so convincingly, capturing imagination and hopes of the country's
- 3:41Speaker 1: sports fan maybe not soccer fans, the way they won
- 3:44Speaker 1: Friday night, plus Australia winning two nothing against Turkey in
- 3:48Speaker 1: its first group stage match in Vancouver Saturday night makes
- 3:51Speaker 1: Friday's match of import. If whoever wins Friday, Australia, US
- 3:56Speaker 1: has control of that group for first place with only
- 3:59Speaker 1: one game remaining and group play, and that gives you
- 4:02Speaker 1: the inside track to a favorable round of thirty two match,
- 4:05Speaker 1: perhaps probably against the eight third place team, a wildcard qualifier.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And if the US wins its groove wins it's around
- 4:13Speaker 1: a thirty two match against a third place team, they
- 4:15Speaker 1: would be on track to play back in Seattle around
- 4:18Speaker 1: a sixteen match here at Lumenfield on July the sixth.
- 4:21Speaker 1: That's what a win Friday would do against the Soccer
- 4:24Speaker 1: Ruse if it.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Comes to that.
- 4:25Speaker 1: We'll talk about the Mariners injuries that Chris alluded to. Man,
- 4:29Speaker 1: every dude, every day, two more guys get hurt. Yeah,
- 4:31Speaker 1: now playing the backfield, that's gonna know, Chris Man, Now
- 4:34Speaker 1: the closer Munios has been struggling anyways, hurt.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's one of It's one of those situations that
- 4:40Speaker 2: I'm glad they're going through it now. Get get this
- 4:42Speaker 2: out of your system, all these injuries and all of that,
- 4:45Speaker 2: and hopes that when time when it's time to win,
- 4:49Speaker 2: everyone is healthy. Obviously anyone's playing through something, but it
- 4:51Speaker 2: won't be what it is right now, is what I'm
- 4:53Speaker 2: getting at.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Well.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Also recap the NBA and Stanley Cup Finals, the memorable
- 4:58Speaker 1: performances there, Crystal Talk World. He saw Jalen Runs in
- 5:02Speaker 1: the MVP, his dad on the stage with him getting
- 5:04Speaker 1: the MVP trophy in San Antonio after the end. That
- 5:06Speaker 1: was pretty cool, Eric, friends of that coming into the
- 5:11Speaker 1: Jimmy's on First, do you have World Cup fever? Of
- 5:15Speaker 1: course a lot of the world does. I mean that's
- 5:17Speaker 1: the world's largest sporting event. But the TV ratings say
- 5:20Speaker 1: that maybe a lot of America has World Cup fever.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Just off the very first game four nine four five.
- 5:26Speaker 1: One of the comandads text line, are you into the
- 5:28Speaker 1: World Cup? Are you in the World Cup now? After
- 5:30Speaker 1: the US one four to one on Friday? Then maybe
- 5:32Speaker 1: you weren't before? Then are you good?
- 5:35Speaker 3: Care less?
- 5:35Speaker 1: What's going on downtown and Soto today at noon between
- 5:38Speaker 1: Belgium and Egypt.
- 5:40Speaker 3: I will tell you, Chris, it is is pretty cool.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Seen here in a lot thousands of people on the
- 5:44Speaker 1: street behind me here on Jimmy's on First on Occidental
- 5:47Speaker 1: and First Avenue. But it's gonna be five times this
- 5:50Speaker 1: on Friday for the noon Australia US match. I mean,
- 5:55Speaker 1: anyone and everyone who's an American soccer fan that follows
- 5:58Speaker 1: that team is coming in to Seattle for that the
- 6:01Speaker 1: scenes Saturday night in Vancouver, I saw online Matt stretch Johnson,
- 6:05Speaker 1: a good friend of mine, former Seahawks PR guy, was
- 6:09Speaker 1: in Vancouver with his brother. He was sending pictures of this.
- 6:12Speaker 1: The soccer roof fans, the Australian fans just taken over
- 6:16Speaker 1: downtown Vancouver before that match Saturday against Turkey. That's what's
- 6:19Speaker 1: coming to Seattle Friday. It's gonna be wild down here.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Whether you're into soccer or not, it's gonna be a
- 6:25Speaker 1: wild seed up next. Moz Vita Marara Cascadia Sports, that
- 6:29Speaker 1: longtime friend of mine, soccer guy in Seattle, talking World
- 6:32Speaker 1: Cup from Jimmy's on First, right across the street from
- 6:35Speaker 1: Loomenfield where the match between Belgium and Egypt will kickoff
- 6:38Speaker 1: at noon. All the covers live on ninety three point
- 6:41Speaker 1: three KJRFM.
- 6:42Speaker 5: Now back to Greg Bell and Christopher Kidd on your
- 6:45Speaker 5: Home for the Huskies, Krackin and The twelfth Man Sports
- 6:49Speaker 5: Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Greg Belt Show with Christopher Kidd,
- 6:57Speaker 1: live from Jimmy's on First across the streets from Loomenfield.
- 7:01Speaker 1: They're calling it Seattle Stadium for the next month. FIFA
- 7:04Speaker 1: World Cup first of four group stage matches today and
- 7:07Speaker 1: the Belgian fans are already behind me up along First
- 7:10Speaker 1: Avenue South along Occidental to go in to watch Belgium
- 7:13Speaker 1: and Egypt. That's a noon kickoffs. Vietamurra Cascadia Sports soccer
- 7:18Speaker 1: man through and through from Zimbabwe, Roosevelt High school soccer player,
- 7:24Speaker 1: still in the soccer community here in Seattle, writing covering
- 7:27Speaker 1: today's game for Cascadia Sports. He joined us on ninety
- 7:30Speaker 1: three point three KJR. Hello, sir, hey, sir, so this
- 7:35Speaker 1: you've been excited. I mean, you can't pick me up
- 7:36Speaker 1: this morning a little bit early. You've been waiting a
- 7:39Speaker 1: lifetime for the soccer people in the Pacific Northwest. The
- 7:42Speaker 1: world's greatest sporting event coming here. Just a level of
- 7:46Speaker 1: exciting for someone like you who's lived soccer their entire life.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Well, I mean, it's funny because I just ran into it.
- 7:51Speaker 4: John Horman, who used to be you know, he coach
- 7:53Speaker 4: to Roosevelt and some of the girls team, and he's
- 7:57Speaker 4: talking about nineteen seventy four and he's talking to some
- 8:00Speaker 4: guy over there we didn't even know soccer was here
- 8:03Speaker 4: in nineteen seventy four. So Jon's we used to played
- 8:06Speaker 4: the view ridge, right, So I mean soccer in Seattle
- 8:10Speaker 4: grew up organically and continue to grow, and so just
- 8:13Speaker 4: to see it now and just watch it. And now
- 8:17Speaker 4: here's the World Cup. I mean it's it's yeah. I
- 8:20Speaker 4: mean the old couple of six am, I'm just all
- 8:22Speaker 4: excited about it. And the Seattle community just embraced this opportunity.
- 8:28Speaker 3: The scene here, maz a, Belgians everywhere.
- 8:32Speaker 1: There are some Egyptian fans, but already since eight am
- 8:35Speaker 1: we got here there, but Belgian fans everywhere. Is this
- 8:38Speaker 1: what you expected? Is this what the world coming to
- 8:41Speaker 1: Seattle is? Or it's even gonna get wilder.
- 8:43Speaker 4: It's to be expected, it's gonna get wilder. I mean
- 8:46Speaker 4: you know, to our left, you've got three guys wearing
- 8:48Speaker 4: Kevin Tabrena shirts. Right, you got three sevens out of here.
- 8:52Speaker 4: But it is what you expected because soccer those two
- 8:55Speaker 4: things that happened in a World Cup. There is what's
- 8:57Speaker 4: happening on the field and then the community, and it's
- 9:01Speaker 4: really is communities coming together, learning about each other and
- 9:05Speaker 4: embracing each other. And they started out Germany. I mean
- 9:09Speaker 4: the German World Cup was the first one where they
- 9:12Speaker 4: had the fan zone, and so what that was it was, Hey,
- 9:15Speaker 4: learn about each other, embrace that. And I think that's
- 9:18Speaker 4: really unique because it's really embracing each other's community. And
- 9:22Speaker 4: then the soccer that's going on. And now you've seen
- 9:25Speaker 4: the NFL and everybody else kind of adapt. Of course
- 9:27Speaker 4: they have to this, you know, the fan viewing zone.
- 9:30Speaker 4: That's what you're seeing so much, you know, joy and
- 9:35Speaker 4: people coming together because it is the embracement of the
- 9:38Speaker 4: cultures united by this round thing that's checkered. It's not
- 9:42Speaker 4: checkered anymore, you know what I mean.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But that's the power sport right to bring people together
- 9:47Speaker 1: across cultural, economical, political, ideological bounds. And the World Cup
- 9:51Speaker 1: is the melting pot of that. And the fan zon't
- 9:54Speaker 1: you talk about. There's four of them across downtown Seattle proper,
- 9:58Speaker 1: like the Waterfront Park, Peer sixty two outdoor viewing and
- 10:03Speaker 1: the Armory in Seattle Center. All the libraries in Seattle
- 10:06Speaker 1: are having free viewings and watch parties. The US team,
- 10:12Speaker 1: the home team, never advanced past the quarterfinal stage of
- 10:16Speaker 1: a World Cup, only a couple knockout stage matches. Their
- 10:19Speaker 1: best finish was way back in nineteen thirty the first
- 10:21Speaker 1: World Cup, when they finished third in a very small field,
- 10:25Speaker 1: but they won for to one over Paraguay on Friday
- 10:28Speaker 1: in Englewood. They're coming here to Loomenfield in Seattle to
- 10:32Speaker 1: play the Australians who were upset winners in Vancouver on
- 10:35Speaker 1: Saturday night, beating.
- 10:37Speaker 3: A favorite Turkey team.
- 10:39Speaker 1: What did that US win you think do for galvanizing
- 10:43Speaker 1: casual sports fans in the World Cup and maybe excitement
- 10:46Speaker 1: in setting up what could be at Battle Royal on
- 10:48Speaker 1: Friday afternoon.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Here Australia US. What did that win do for this
- 10:52Speaker 3: whole event?
- 10:53Speaker 4: Nationalism? You know what I mean? I mean really what
- 10:55Speaker 4: it was is that if you didn't follow the US,
- 11:00Speaker 4: know all the players, but the Nationals them kicks in
- 11:02Speaker 4: because you if you're casual fan, you know that this
- 11:05Speaker 4: is that we just talked about cultures coming together, and
- 11:08Speaker 4: now you know the US and they're doing and they
- 11:11Speaker 4: did well in their first game, so you got a
- 11:13Speaker 4: little you know, stars and striped pride here and you're
- 11:16Speaker 4: gonna start kind of following this. So I think that's
- 11:18Speaker 4: what it does. It shifted the average fan now to
- 11:22Speaker 4: say let's go USA, because now I can be part
- 11:25Speaker 4: of this nationalism you know in it like we say
- 11:28Speaker 4: in a cultural fun way.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Well, now that you've seen them play once, it was
- 11:34Speaker 3: just once against Paraguay, where how far does the USA go?
- 11:37Speaker 3: They win?
- 11:37Speaker 1: If they beat Australia on Friday, Moz, they got control
- 11:40Speaker 1: of the group, could get a favorable round of thirty
- 11:42Speaker 1: two match against a third place team. If they win
- 11:45Speaker 1: a group and get a third beat a third place
- 11:47Speaker 1: team in around a thirty two they would be set
- 11:49Speaker 1: up to play back here in Seattle July sixth and
- 11:51Speaker 1: round of sixteen, perhaps against Belgium. The way the brackets
- 11:54Speaker 1: work out, is it realistic to think that they're gonna
- 11:57Speaker 1: get at least round to sixteen?
- 11:59Speaker 3: The US team?
- 12:00Speaker 4: I mean, be sure? Why not?
- 12:03Speaker 3: Right?
- 12:03Speaker 4: And I'm you don't. I think they have some of
- 12:07Speaker 4: the skills set that's needed. You need a little bit
- 12:11Speaker 4: of luck, and Greg, you and I know in sports
- 12:13Speaker 4: when you cover sports that you need a little bit
- 12:15Speaker 4: of luck. I think what this US team has, what
- 12:18Speaker 4: I'm encouraged by is the coach. I think Morris Predaccino
- 12:21Speaker 4: gets it in terms of not just the physicality, but
- 12:25Speaker 4: the mental edge you need. He gave the players a
- 12:29Speaker 4: few days off after the win, right, I mean this
- 12:32Speaker 4: it's a tournament. And as you know, there's a difference
- 12:35Speaker 4: between coaching and winning a league and then coaching and
- 12:40Speaker 4: winning a tournament. And we see that all the time
- 12:42Speaker 4: in terms of whether it's a Super Bowl or whether
- 12:45Speaker 4: it's the NCAA. Right, there's a certain type of coaching
- 12:47Speaker 4: that's going on. What I like about the US team
- 12:51Speaker 4: is they've got a couple of things now that has evolved, right,
- 12:55Speaker 4: and that is able to go down They've always had
- 12:57Speaker 4: the speed, right, there's appoint in the United States said
- 12:59Speaker 4: let's get some speed, let's get some skill. They have
- 13:02Speaker 4: that now they have creativity. Good example that you saw
- 13:06Speaker 4: is it's going down the wings. And when you go
- 13:09Speaker 4: down the wings and you have speed, what you're trying
- 13:11Speaker 4: to do is the back four of back three. You're
- 13:14Speaker 4: trying to move a little bit. Now, what the United
- 13:17Speaker 4: States gets is cut back inside, because what you've done
- 13:20Speaker 4: when you go down the wing is you're separating those
- 13:23Speaker 4: back defenders channels, creating channels, and then in the end
- 13:26Speaker 4: you basically to use a football turnaround. So you've got
- 13:29Speaker 4: a wide receiver and a cornerback, right, so you're kind
- 13:32Speaker 4: of doing this go round and then you cut back
- 13:34Speaker 4: inside and the same thing is happening on the other side.
- 13:37Speaker 4: So now they understand that. And the other nuance again
- 13:41Speaker 4: is attacking from the middle, and so when you cut
- 13:44Speaker 4: back inside, there's another running coming inside the box. You
- 13:47Speaker 4: have multiple box, multiple players in the box. And that's
- 13:50Speaker 4: something new that I think Producchina brings in terms of
- 13:54Speaker 4: how he's able to teach the nuance and the creativity
- 13:59Speaker 4: of the US team. And that's what I like.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Let's say Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, four days into the tournament,
- 14:05Speaker 1: what's you've watched? That's a team that surprised you. What
- 14:08Speaker 1: you've watched a team that's disappointed you. And as this
- 14:11Speaker 1: expanded field mods to forty eight teams, diluted the quality
- 14:15Speaker 1: of playodoff from thirty two to forty eight teams the
- 14:17Speaker 1: World Cup for the first time this year. Anything catch
- 14:21Speaker 1: your eye about that? Perhaps, I mean, except the corset
- 14:25Speaker 1: coming in. I think it's okay because the way Curris
- 14:27Speaker 1: Houn's not probably in the tournament if it's thirty two, right, right,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and so curse I lost seven to one to three time.
- 14:33Speaker 3: We're four time world champion in Germany yesterday.
- 14:36Speaker 4: But but the thing is you do have quality, you
- 14:41Speaker 4: just don't have you know, a top fifteen teams now,
- 14:44Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And what you're starting to
- 14:46Speaker 4: see is more of the players are playing in you know,
- 14:49Speaker 4: in the other top leagues of Premier League and and
- 14:53Speaker 4: so what that does is your number thirty thirty five
- 14:56Speaker 4: team is actually pretty good. But once we get down
- 14:59Speaker 4: to the sixteen, I think that's when you kind of
- 15:02Speaker 4: separate that. I thought the Japan game was really good
- 15:10Speaker 4: in Dallas, yep. And and that was a that's what
- 15:13Speaker 4: you expected, right, two teams on the front foot and
- 15:15Speaker 4: also tactically with both both played to their strengths, and
- 15:19Speaker 4: that's why you end up with that too too fast based.
- 15:21Speaker 4: And I think that that was the most fun exciting
- 15:24Speaker 4: game to see because they were on the front foot
- 15:27Speaker 4: and they also played to their strengths. They both said
- 15:29Speaker 4: forget about always going to win, and the other team
- 15:34Speaker 4: said the same thing. My way is going to win.
- 15:37Speaker 4: And what happens when you do that?
- 15:38Speaker 3: To to how has this tournament been run? Do you think.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Cascadia Sports Lifetime Seattle Soccer guy joining us here on
- 15:46Speaker 1: ninety three point three KJR, across the street from the
- 15:48Speaker 1: pitch where Belgium and Inegip will begin at noon today.
- 15:52Speaker 1: The tournament itself, the ticket prices have been a big
- 15:56Speaker 1: How skyrocketing prices can't get the average fan in here.
- 16:00Speaker 1: The empty hotel rooms that FIFA had reserved and then
- 16:03Speaker 1: not used and dump back into the market that remain unsold.
- 16:06Speaker 1: The organization of the tournament, both locally and nationally and
- 16:11Speaker 1: through the continent of Canada and Mexico also hosting, how
- 16:13Speaker 1: do you think that's.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Gone minus minis. I mean, I think there's been some
- 16:20Speaker 4: struggles and some growing pains, and then you know, people
- 16:23Speaker 4: trying to understand the specific roles right and I think
- 16:26Speaker 4: the local organizing committees. You know, he's done a pretty
- 16:29Speaker 4: good job in terms of, you know, all these events
- 16:33Speaker 4: that they have. From a cultural perspective. As a broadcaster,
- 16:37Speaker 4: I'd like more information, you know, I like the stats
- 16:39Speaker 4: every moment, but that's you know, I mean in that
- 16:42Speaker 4: part that hasn't been the best. But that's okay, because
- 16:45Speaker 4: what you're trying to do when you're hosting a tournament
- 16:49Speaker 4: like this is the micro is the community that we
- 16:52Speaker 4: talked about, So do you have to focus on that.
- 16:54Speaker 4: There's the business aspect of it too, right, you know,
- 16:56Speaker 4: the businesses want to get involved, So how do you
- 16:58Speaker 4: get involved? And let's greg it's not fool ourselves. I mean,
- 17:02Speaker 4: it's a money maker.
- 17:02Speaker 3: It's a business, a billion dollar business.
- 17:06Speaker 4: And FIFA is you know, I think it's one of
- 17:09Speaker 4: the richest organizations that's out there.
- 17:10Speaker 3: It's a cartel.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Well better you than me, but they straddle the line
- 17:15Speaker 4: between business nonprofit and all of these things. And oh,
- 17:20Speaker 4: by the way, we've got to try to to, you know,
- 17:23Speaker 4: make sure we're getting the best product out there. One
- 17:25Speaker 4: of the most interesting things is these hydration breaks.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Yeah, what about that they've midway through each half. For
- 17:33Speaker 1: those that don't know, FIFA has enacted mandatory water breaks,
- 17:38Speaker 1: hydration breaks midway through each half forty five minute halves,
- 17:40Speaker 1: two forty five minute halves, and the breaks come in
- 17:42Speaker 1: the middle of the three minute breaks and each team
- 17:45Speaker 1: they also use it for tactical advantages. But about the
- 17:48Speaker 1: hydration break, what's interesting. They've become a time out.
- 17:51Speaker 4: To my I mean, that's exactly so I wonder know
- 17:56Speaker 4: in FIFA, I wonder if this will evolve down the
- 17:59Speaker 4: road to where a team can have a timeout. Ah,
- 18:03Speaker 4: because because you're seeing the difference the hydration breaks obviously,
- 18:07Speaker 4: I mean take a step backward there. For if they're
- 18:10Speaker 4: playing in hot weather, you know, mandatory, so you know,
- 18:13Speaker 4: players take that water. But now you're seeing Padaccino take
- 18:17Speaker 4: out the you know, the pad, and you seeing other
- 18:19Speaker 4: coaches take out notes and everything else, and they're actually
- 18:22Speaker 4: making tactical changes, and I think it's brilliant. I mean
- 18:27Speaker 4: I love it. I mean I absolutely love it. Now
- 18:30Speaker 4: you're seeing some of the other games where the announcers
- 18:33Speaker 4: are going, we don't even need a you know, a
- 18:36Speaker 4: hydration break because it's not so okay. But from the
- 18:43Speaker 4: tactical perspective, man, it's a timeout, so you see, I
- 18:46Speaker 4: don't know break. I love it. I'm enthralled with it.
- 18:49Speaker 1: How do you think the viewing experience of the hydration
- 18:51Speaker 1: right the United States, the Fox broadcast the English language
- 18:54Speaker 1: broadcasts choose to go to commercials. In fact, they went
- 18:56Speaker 1: to commercials on the first day, so long they missed
- 18:59Speaker 1: action in the first few games. Versus Telemundo and the
- 19:03Speaker 1: Spanish language. Here in the United States, they stay on
- 19:06Speaker 1: the pitch with the cameras on the players during the
- 19:09Speaker 1: hydration break.
- 19:10Speaker 3: As a viewer and a soccer lover, what do you
- 19:12Speaker 3: like better?
- 19:13Speaker 1: Which you understand they're trying to make money at Fox
- 19:16Speaker 1: selling advertising, but what would you rather do?
- 19:19Speaker 3: Well?
- 19:19Speaker 4: I think we would rather stay on the field and
- 19:21Speaker 4: see that interaction. Yeah, see that, you know, see the
- 19:23Speaker 4: coach and the players and you know the body language
- 19:27Speaker 4: and them. Yeah, exchanging water bottles and all of that.
- 19:31Speaker 4: But that's all part of the game. I think to
- 19:33Speaker 4: move away from that, and I to your point, Yes,
- 19:36Speaker 4: it's business, Yes you gotta sell whatever ex product, but
- 19:40Speaker 4: I think if you want to again get the casual
- 19:43Speaker 4: fan and get people inside the game, I think you
- 19:45Speaker 4: need to stay right there.
- 19:47Speaker 3: The SEC will say they're doing it.
- 19:48Speaker 1: FIFA's wanting a three minute break so they can't sell
- 19:51Speaker 1: a so the rights holders can get some return in
- 19:54Speaker 1: the middle of the.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Half, which is the reason why they're doing it.
- 19:57Speaker 1: In air conditioned games like today, though, they're gonna need
- 20:00Speaker 1: the highdation breaks. It's gonna be almost ninety degrees on
- 20:02Speaker 1: the pitch, the grass pitch at Lumenfield. You've been around
- 20:06Speaker 1: this run up to the Cup for those that don't
- 20:08Speaker 1: know there's a grass pitch. FIFA requires all World Cup
- 20:12Speaker 1: qualifying and World Cup final matches to be on real grass.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Of course, the Seahawks and Sounders normally play in Lumenfield
- 20:18Speaker 1: on artificial turf. There is a fourteen inch platform above
- 20:23Speaker 1: the artificial turf that the real grass is laid on,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and then there's an irrigation and draining system in that
- 20:29Speaker 1: fourteen inch gap to the artificial turf. Have you heard
- 20:32Speaker 1: anything anecdotally, Masvita about the playing surface and how fast
- 20:36Speaker 1: it is or is it European quality? There's talk of
- 20:40Speaker 1: the watering here in the United States is different than
- 20:42Speaker 1: European fields and therefore it won't play the same and
- 20:45Speaker 1: you may see a lot of long balls over the
- 20:47Speaker 1: top because they can't kick and scoot the ball around
- 20:51Speaker 1: a relatively drier pitch in the US.
- 20:52Speaker 3: What have you heard anecdotally about this pitch here in Seattle?
- 20:55Speaker 4: Actually it's been positive, right, I mean, normally you're looking
- 20:58Speaker 4: for the you know we'll see today, but you know
- 21:01Speaker 4: the chunks, remember back when they first started with somebody
- 21:04Speaker 4: who'd kicked it, And I think they've evolved in terms
- 21:07Speaker 4: of the pitch and how grass on top of artificial
- 21:12Speaker 4: surfaces there. I think watering is important and to your point,
- 21:17Speaker 4: they have to be real careful, right because you can't
- 21:20Speaker 4: get it too wet, but you can't get it too dry.
- 21:23Speaker 4: It has to be just perfect so that you can
- 21:25Speaker 4: get the slide rule pass down there, you know, next
- 21:27Speaker 4: to the next play at ten to fifteen yards, and
- 21:29Speaker 4: that's important in attacking. So to your point, you just
- 21:31Speaker 4: started throwing long balls over there. So but I have
- 21:35Speaker 4: not heard anything negatively, but Greg rules have to wait
- 21:38Speaker 4: and see after today's game.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Who's your favorite in the tournament and who have you
- 21:42Speaker 1: seen maybe even already that's going to be a surprise.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Team wise, I think France is just you know, they
- 21:51Speaker 4: were there and I think they veteran Leyton squad that's there.
- 21:58Speaker 4: There's always going to be a surprise eyes. But I
- 22:01Speaker 4: also like Morocco, you know, Africa.
- 22:04Speaker 3: We gotta go with Brazil this past weekend.
- 22:09Speaker 4: It's interesting to see Brazil, you know, is this is
- 22:16Speaker 4: it over? And I don't what I mean is over?
- 22:19Speaker 4: Is are they normal? Are they beatable?
- 22:21Speaker 3: Now?
- 22:21Speaker 4: And I think you know Morocco, you know, it's a
- 22:24Speaker 4: good team in Brazil as well, so uh, this is
- 22:27Speaker 4: a big tournament for Brazil. They and there is a satie.
- 22:32Speaker 4: There is a change to play team as opposed to
- 22:35Speaker 4: having three or four four players right or five players
- 22:38Speaker 4: are dominant. Now you have eleven. So I'm interesting to
- 22:41Speaker 4: see how Brazil adapts to that and the US if
- 22:47Speaker 4: they can get the back line in order. I like Bologna,
- 22:50Speaker 4: I mean I do. I mean, I think he's he's
- 22:52Speaker 4: got that click Dempsey esque kind of you know what
- 22:56Speaker 4: I you know, if the balls are on my foot
- 22:58Speaker 4: and the goals there, I will score. So and Polistic
- 23:01Speaker 4: I don't know, he's injured a little bit. I know
- 23:02Speaker 4: you just asked overall, but I have to wait and
- 23:05Speaker 4: see what's up with that basically dead leg.
- 23:06Speaker 1: It helps for seven days between games and Polisics case
- 23:09Speaker 1: and the fact that they, as you said, shut them down.
- 23:12Speaker 3: The whole team got two or three days off down
- 23:15Speaker 3: in Laguna Beach and Irvine where their training center is.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Okay, tell the soccer fan Maazuda Morera cases Cascade of sports.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Lifelong Seattle soccer player, way back to when he played
- 23:23Speaker 1: for Roosevelt High School and back in the day a
- 23:25Speaker 1: couple that was only a couple of years ago. Right, Well,
- 23:28Speaker 1: tell the soccer fan what they're going to see today.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Belgium in Egypt, the noon kickoff here in Lumenfield, the
- 23:33Speaker 1: first of four group stage matches in Seattle. Belgium's ranked
- 23:35Speaker 1: tenth in the world, one of the most experienced sides
- 23:38Speaker 1: in the World Cup. You mentioned Kevin de Bruner. Everybody's
- 23:41Speaker 1: got their jerseys on here at Jimmy's and down on
- 23:42Speaker 1: the street of number seven for Belgium, he's thirty four
- 23:46Speaker 1: years old. Their goalkeeper Kurtoi is thirty four, Mariner the
- 23:50Speaker 1: outside back thirty seven to thirty four, and then Witzel
- 23:54Speaker 1: in the midfield is thirty seven. Lukaku everyone knows the
- 23:59Speaker 1: striker for Belgia, he's thirty three.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Is this the last row for Belgium? Is there time
- 24:03Speaker 3: already passed? Yeah?
- 24:05Speaker 4: I mean I think this is it. And in terms
- 24:07Speaker 4: of the balance of the old guys, you know, the
- 24:10Speaker 4: golden generation, if you will, And what that means is
- 24:13Speaker 4: that you know, you have you have the best massive
- 24:17Speaker 4: players out there with the high expectations, and then they
- 24:20Speaker 4: have some young guys that are coming in. I mean,
- 24:22Speaker 4: I think I think Tressad from Arsenal is actually a
- 24:26Speaker 4: really good player another one of those and obviously Jeremy
- 24:29Speaker 4: Doker from Manchester City. So they've got some up and
- 24:32Speaker 4: coming young guys then that can you know, you sprinkle
- 24:36Speaker 4: in with the veterans that you just talked about and
- 24:39Speaker 4: it's a good recipe for them to advance. I think,
- 24:44Speaker 4: to go far. I think they'll be They're one of
- 24:46Speaker 4: those teams that should get to the quarter in the
- 24:48Speaker 4: semi finals there and then Egypt I think, you know,
- 24:51Speaker 4: we all know about Salah and but I think Mamoosh
- 24:57Speaker 4: also when he's lined up place for man City, when
- 25:01Speaker 4: he's lined up with Salah, that is an attacking go
- 25:05Speaker 4: forward and to my original point, they're attacking inside the middle.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:10Speaker 4: So you're gonna see two teams again we talked about
- 25:13Speaker 4: Japan and the Netherlands, two teams that will say our strength,
- 25:16Speaker 4: we're gonna focus on what we do best and we
- 25:19Speaker 4: believe that should take us past you.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Front foot football on display today.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Both the teams playing today, by the way, expect to
- 25:26Speaker 1: advance out of what is considered a relatively weaker group
- 25:28Speaker 1: and Group G. New Zealand and Iran are the other
- 25:31Speaker 1: two teams. So a loss for either team today Belgium
- 25:34Speaker 1: or Egypt is not at all keeping them from the
- 25:36Speaker 1: thoughts of advancing mos. I know you're excited and thanks
- 25:39Speaker 1: for joining me a year here four hours before the
- 25:42Speaker 1: kickoff of the first World Cup match in Seattle.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Enjoyed the tournament.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Thanks for having me, Greg mos.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Vita Morrera, Cascadia Sports on the first World Cup match
- 25:52Speaker 1: ever in Seattle, noon today Belgium and Egypt.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Again.
- 25:55Speaker 1: That was mas Vita Morera, Cascadia sports Net talking World Cup.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Lifelong soccer fan, soccer man, player, coach, back to his days.
- 26:03Speaker 3: At Roosevelt High School as a student, good friend of mine.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Up next from Jimmy's on first right, across the street
- 26:09Speaker 1: from the World Cup pitch here in Seattle.
- 26:11Speaker 3: The Mariners they've got injuries. They got injuries.
- 26:15Speaker 1: On top of the injuries, Josh Navor the latest Andres
- 26:17Speaker 1: Munnos is back tightened up yesterday. They have a plan
- 26:20Speaker 1: to backfield some of those injuries starting tomorrow when the
- 26:23Speaker 1: homestand begins. We'll talk about that next on ninety three
- 26:25Speaker 1: point three KJRFM.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Hello, Happy Monday to you. Back when the Great As
- 26:40Speaker 3: Show with Christy Kid Life from Jimmy's on.
- 26:42Speaker 1: First outside of Luminfield, people wearing jergies of all kinds
- 26:47Speaker 1: of NATS nowities Mexico, US, Belgium, Germany, France, Egypt, Belgium
- 26:53Speaker 1: and Egypt kickoff in about an hour and fifteen minutes
- 26:56Speaker 1: here at Lumenfield. Across the street at Lumenfield, the first
- 26:59Speaker 1: of six World Cup matches in Seattle, the first World
- 27:02Speaker 1: Cup match ever in Seattle today in about an hour
- 27:04Speaker 1: and fifteen minutes. The Mariners have been on the road
- 27:08Speaker 1: all week and they went four and six on a
- 27:11Speaker 1: road trip that was not good. Two out of three
- 27:14Speaker 1: they lost to Washington after two three they lost to
- 27:19Speaker 1: balt Two out of four, they lost to Baltimore. Two
- 27:21Speaker 1: out of three, they lost to Detroit. Yesterday, more injuries
- 27:25Speaker 1: for the Mariners. Josh Naylor filed a ball off his
- 27:27Speaker 1: right shin. Patrick Wisdom replaced him at first base the
- 27:31Speaker 1: last few innings of a ten to one loss.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Then Chris Andres Munoz.
- 27:35Speaker 1: We've been talking about him and his struggles in the bullpen,
- 27:38Speaker 1: five blown saves he pitched, had not pitched since Monday
- 27:44Speaker 1: in Baltimore, the first of that four game series. So
- 27:46Speaker 1: he comes in yesterday just to get work in an
- 27:49Speaker 1: eighth inning of a blowout game. He allowed a leadoff walk,
- 27:53Speaker 1: then a double, and then manager Dan Wilson came out
- 27:56Speaker 1: and got him. Both those base runners scored, so t
- 28:00Speaker 1: who runs charged to Munials without him getting an out.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Wilson said after the game Munyos has lower back tightness.
- 28:06Speaker 3: He's had that in the past.
- 28:09Speaker 1: He's dealt with lower back issues, including for weeks in
- 28:12Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, that he never went on the injury.
- 28:14Speaker 3: List for it.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Dan Wilson says that his closer is quote day to day.
- 28:19Speaker 1: The Mariners are off today, they start a homestand tomorrow
- 28:23Speaker 1: across the street from me, right behind me at Team
- 28:25Speaker 1: lebil Park against Baltimore. Then they have a weekend series
- 28:28Speaker 1: against Boston at home, and tomorrow is a day where
- 28:31Speaker 1: two guys could be coming back to the lineup that
- 28:33Speaker 1: they need. Kyle Rowley has been just ripping minor league
- 28:37Speaker 1: pitching on his minor league rehab assignment with the Tacoma Rainiers,
- 28:40Speaker 1: hitting home runs two or three a day at times.
- 28:44Speaker 1: It seems like he's more than ready to come back
- 28:46Speaker 1: and join the lineup tomorrow before that game against the Orioles,
- 28:50Speaker 1: and then JP Crawford becomes eligible to him off the
- 28:53Speaker 1: tend angelis tomorrow. Of course, he had that bruised right
- 28:55Speaker 1: hand that Framber Valdez hit him with a ninety five
- 28:57Speaker 1: mile hour fastball with the first game of that Day
- 29:00Speaker 1: de Troit series. But ten days is tomorrow, so he
- 29:03Speaker 1: can come off the list. Ryan Bliss has still been
- 29:06Speaker 1: with the team. Remember they brought him up. He won
- 29:09Speaker 1: a couple of games late with his defense and speed,
- 29:11Speaker 1: and then they optioned him back to Tacoma. But he's
- 29:15Speaker 1: still been with the team on their taxi squad. He
- 29:17Speaker 1: hasn't He's been an active not playing on standby. Among
- 29:20Speaker 1: all these injuries, He's still an option. Perhaps cold Emerson
- 29:26Speaker 1: sounds like the twenty year old rookie is going to
- 29:27Speaker 1: stay at shortstop. I mean how he's playing JP Crawford
- 29:32Speaker 1: again yesterday working out in Washington at third base before
- 29:36Speaker 1: the game with Perry Hill, the infield coach, and Daniel
- 29:39Speaker 1: Kramer MLB dot Com, the Mariners beat writer friend of ours,
- 29:42Speaker 1: writing that they think the Mariners thon he thinks that
- 29:45Speaker 1: JP Crawford's going to come back to play third base
- 29:47Speaker 1: because Brendan Donovan's still not ready to come back off
- 29:50Speaker 1: the injury list. Remember, Justin Hollander has been saying they're
- 29:52Speaker 1: going to take the slow track with Donovan returning, so
- 29:56Speaker 1: he doesn't injure its growing yet again, he's already been
- 29:58Speaker 1: on the injury list twice. When Cayl Rally comes back,
- 30:02Speaker 1: Johnny Parrada is probably gonna go back to the Como,
- 30:05Speaker 1: though he probably deserves.
- 30:06Speaker 3: To stay how he's played.
- 30:08Speaker 1: But you got Mitch Garber as your veteran number two
- 30:11Speaker 1: can also DHM, so Parada's probably the swap out back
- 30:14Speaker 1: to Tacoma when Kyle Rally comes back, likely activated before
- 30:19Speaker 1: first pitch tomorrow. It's customary for Justin Hollander to talk
- 30:23Speaker 1: to the media before the first game of every home stand,
- 30:27Speaker 1: so we expect him to talk tomorrow about where Brendan
- 30:29Speaker 1: Donovan is and when he might come back. But until
- 30:32Speaker 1: he does, JP Crawford could be the third baseman. But
- 30:36Speaker 1: Chris said, it's never good for a first place team,
- 30:39Speaker 1: no matter how weak your division is, for your closer
- 30:41Speaker 1: to be one ineffective and two hurt.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Now Andris Munnas is hurt, you're worried about that. Yeah,
- 30:46Speaker 3: I'm a little worried.
- 30:47Speaker 2: There's a couple of things that you mentioned that I'm thinking, Okay,
- 30:51Speaker 2: they're holding their position despite all this. Right, it could
- 30:54Speaker 2: have gone far worse on the road, but they were
- 30:58Speaker 2: able to manage a few wins. So even with the
- 31:01Speaker 2: inconsistency and the injuries, they've stayed in the mix, and
- 31:03Speaker 2: that's all you could really ask for. The injuries, they
- 31:07Speaker 2: do explain a lot, especially when you're looking at a
- 31:09Speaker 2: lineup with multiple bench or filling starters, as we've talked
- 31:12Speaker 2: about last week, Patrick Wisdom, Miles Master, Bony, Victor Roblez.
- 31:17Speaker 2: You can go on with all these guys that are
- 31:19Speaker 2: just having to step up and the team performance. It's
- 31:23Speaker 2: kind of unfair to evaluate it the way it is
- 31:25Speaker 2: right now, but this is what's happening at this point
- 31:28Speaker 2: in time. And then you mentioned with the bullpen and
- 31:30Speaker 2: the issues there. But the good thing is there is
- 31:35Speaker 2: going to be some help coming. So Kyle Riley he's
- 31:38Speaker 2: coming back soon. JP Crawford returns, hopefully to full rhythm,
- 31:42Speaker 2: and then Randy rose Arena avoids that serious hamstring. You know,
- 31:45Speaker 2: that could be something that continues on, but hopefully he
- 31:49Speaker 2: can sit out and heal that properly and doesn't come
- 31:52Speaker 2: back too soon, because that's an injury that you don't
- 31:54Speaker 2: want to mess around with, it can really linger on.
- 31:56Speaker 2: So if Mariners fans, I don't want you to be
- 31:59Speaker 2: too concerned, but I think you can be a little
- 32:04Speaker 2: optimistic and just maybe not reassured that everything happening right
- 32:07Speaker 2: now is the end of the world, because I do
- 32:10Speaker 2: think this team, they've stayed afloat through all these injuries
- 32:14Speaker 2: and uneven play, and the roster I think will be
- 32:17Speaker 2: getting a lot better, and I think if they can
- 32:19Speaker 2: just hold on just a little bit longer. They're playing
- 32:21Speaker 2: against the Orioles, so this is a winnable series, right.
- 32:25Speaker 2: They tied up with them, I think two to two
- 32:26Speaker 2: last time, So let's see if they can actually come
- 32:28Speaker 2: out with a victory in this series. And then hopefully
- 32:31Speaker 2: the offense and defense can become more consistent and away
- 32:34Speaker 2: they go and maybe they hit a nice little win streak.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Four nine, four to five. Wanted to come a dodge
- 32:38Speaker 1: tech line. Which of the myriad injuries the Mariners have
- 32:40Speaker 1: were you? Is it Munyos? You shut him down for
- 32:45Speaker 1: a while, You get him rested and let his back
- 32:46Speaker 1: calm down, put him on the injury list.
