- 0:04Is anyone actually going to listen to my podcast?
- 0:07Why would they? I don't know. Why wouldn't they?
- 0:09Hey, welcome to another episode of Abby the Podcast
- 0:11Lady. Today, I want to try to calm some fears.
- 0:15A question I get asked quite often is, is anyone
- 0:18actually going to listen to my podcast? What
- 0:20if I just do all this work and no one listens
- 0:22to it? Then what? Good question. So I work with
- 0:28a lot of beginner podcasters. I've helped launch
- 0:30dozens of podcasts all around the world. And
- 0:33I consider myself very blessed to be able to
- 0:35help in this department. And I want to just calm
- 0:38some fears today because I think a lot of people
- 0:40start podcasting and they may have an established
- 0:43audience. They may not. I've worked with both
- 0:45ends of the spectrum and seen success come from
- 0:48both angles. And I think a lot of people worry,
- 0:50like, what if I put all this time and energy
- 0:53and effort into something and it just doesn't
- 0:56work? doesn't pan out. And my initial gut reaction
- 0:58to that is people do that every single day. They
- 1:02truly do at much bigger scales. Like there's
- 1:05people who start businesses and then have to
- 1:06close them because it just doesn't pan out. Podcasting
- 1:09is a little bit less work than opening a brick
- 1:11and mortar business and then having to shut it
- 1:13down because no one showed up to buy whatever
- 1:15obscure thing you're selling. So let's get into
- 1:18this and calm your fears. So the first thing
- 1:20I want you to think about is the fact that you
- 1:22don't need 10 ,000 listeners on every single
- 1:26episode right out of the gate. If you do. That's
- 1:28really cool. And you must have put in a lot of
- 1:31work on the front end to have that established
- 1:33audience that are listening to you right out
- 1:36of the gate. People like that, Amy Poehler, when
- 1:38she started her podcast, yeah, that was possible
- 1:40because of the three decades of a career where
- 1:43she put in a lot of hard work and blood and sweat
- 1:46and tears to build her audience and build her
- 1:48career. No one comes into the content creation
- 1:50game and is just immediately successful. Yes,
- 1:53there are some overnight success stories, but
- 1:55it was because people were bold enough to put
- 1:57themselves out. there and they just so happen
- 1:58to be in the right place at the right time. Even
- 2:01Chapel Roan, look at how big of a superstar she
- 2:03has become in the past couple years. I remember
- 2:05a few years before that when she was just a girl
- 2:08in a sparkly swimsuit on very small stages and
- 2:12like hardly anyone was showing up to see her
- 2:14and then all of a sudden people realized how
- 2:16awesome she was as a singer and entertainer and
- 2:18she has one of the biggest stages at the Governor's
- 2:22Ball ever for concerts. Like it is a long game.
- 2:25It is with anything. to be brave enough to put
- 2:28yourself out there and have no one listening
- 2:30at first. And that's fine because we all have
- 2:33to start somewhere. I even think like I just
- 2:35had the vision of Taylor Swift pop into my head
- 2:37when she was playing on a trailer by a river
- 2:41or something. And there was just a banner with
- 2:43red letters at the bottom of it that said Taylor
- 2:45Swift. And it might even said taylorswift .com.
- 2:48But it was just her, her band, her cowboy boots
- 2:50and a guitar on a trailer playing to like six
- 2:53people. There was like no one at that show. And
- 2:56now look at her. Years later, after all the hard
- 2:58work, showing up, being consistent, serving her
- 3:01audience, biggest pop star in the world. I am
- 3:03comparing pop stars to podcasters. I understand
- 3:05that. But the general work ethic is kind of the
- 3:09same. You got to show up and be brave enough
- 3:11to share your expertise and your knowledge and
- 3:13your craft with the world and build that audience.
- 3:16You're not going to start with 10 ,000 listeners
- 3:19overnight from scratch. If you do, congratulations.
- 3:21Please let me know what you did to make that
- 3:23happen because I have never seen it done. But
- 3:26if you keep showing up week after week and offering
- 3:28value to your audience, they will find you. Another
- 3:30thing I want to touch on with this is that podcasting
- 3:33really is about building relationships, not just
- 3:36with you and the people that you have as guests
- 3:39on your show if you're doing an interview -based
- 3:41podcast, but also relationships with the listeners.
- 3:43If you're getting emails from people, if you're
- 3:46getting comments in the comments section, if
- 3:48you're getting feedback on the short clips or
- 3:50graphics that you're posting to promote the show,
- 3:52if people are asking questions or leaving you
- 3:54positive feedback or just generally curious about
- 3:58what you're doing, invite them into the fold.
- 4:00Podcasts are relationships. I know I always freak
- 4:03out when I leave a comment on one of my favorite
- 4:06podcasts, Instagram, and I'm engaging with whatever
- 4:08they asked me to do. And like, if they like the
- 4:11comment, I'm like, yes, this is awesome. This
- 4:13is the best day ever. I'm like screenshotting
- 4:15it and saving it forever because it's cool. Like
- 4:17you want to be involved with the shows that you
- 4:19interact with. So be that to someone else because
- 4:23it doesn't matter. matter how big or small you
- 4:24are if you end up with even five people interacting
- 4:27with your stuff show them some love because if
- 4:29you were in that position you'd want love shown
- 4:31to you it's that golden rule do unto others as
- 4:34you would do to yourself or something like that
- 4:36be good to one another interact on social media
- 4:39positively with one another use that golden rule
- 4:41mentality to build that relationship with your
- 4:43audience because they are coming to you even
- 4:47if it's just a few people at first they're coming
- 4:49to you for some sort of guidance for some sort
- 4:51of help for some sort of solution to their problem
- 4:53that you have to offer them. So be that guide
- 4:56for them because then they're going to turn around
- 4:58and tell their friends, hey, I listened to this
- 5:00show. This podcaster was awesome. She helped
- 5:02me through it. I'm going to send it to you. And
- 5:03then it just ripple effects out. And that's how
- 5:06you build your audience. Not 10 ,000 people all
- 5:08at once, but little ripples one at a time because
- 5:11you're building those relationships. On the other
- 5:13side of that coin, though, is audiences can be
- 5:16very silent in a creepy way, but also in a good
- 5:20way, but still kind of eerie. Like is any one
- 5:22in there I saw a stat recently I wish I could
- 5:25remember the numbers but it was just jarring
- 5:27like the amount of people who are on the internet
- 5:30who create content and who consume content were
- 5:33like just so drastically different and I consider
- 5:37myself a creator but also a consumer my screen
- 5:40time is embarrassing I live on the internet and
- 5:43I am not ashamed to admit that But I am a consumer
- 5:47of the internet and a creator. But I just saw
- 5:49this thing where it's like, if you are a creator,
- 5:51you are in just this very teeny tiny little sliver
- 5:55of the internet where people are consuming what
- 5:57you're making, but they're not always like engaging
- 5:59with it. I hear this all the time in person.
- 6:01I hear when I'm out in public, people are like,
- 6:04oh, I see you pop up on my page all the time.
- 6:05I watch your videos all the time. I watch your
- 6:07podcast tips. I watch your weekly recaps that
- 6:10you do. I'm like, great. Why aren't you engaging
- 6:12with any of it? And they're like, I just don't
- 6:14like to engage on the internet. internet. People
- 6:16don't give out likes for free anymore, which
- 6:18is so stupid. They don't comment on things. They
- 6:21might save it and share it with someone. They
- 6:23probably won't. Their audience is probably going
- 6:25to be more silent than you realize. So if you
- 6:27are sitting here thinking, I'm making a show
- 6:29and I just feel like I'm talking to no one. I'm
- 6:31putting in all this work and it's not going anywhere.
- 6:33Chances are good people are consuming it that
- 6:35you have no idea about and you'll never know
- 6:38about because audiences are so incredibly silent
- 6:41for the most part because people are consuming
- 6:43on the internet. They're not creating. So if
- 6:45you are brave enough to be one of the creators,
- 6:48you are one of the very slim, small percentage
- 6:51of us out there. Keep doing it. Keep showing
- 6:54up. Keep being brave. Keep posting your content
- 6:56because look at everyone who's not. You're putting
- 6:59yourself one step ahead of the person who's too
- 7:01scared to share their expertise. And maybe you
- 7:04being brave enough to do that will inspire that
- 7:06person to start creating. And the last thing
- 7:08I want to touch on here with you thinking, oh,
- 7:11no one's listening. This isn't worth it. I'm
- 7:13putting in all this. energy and effort. And it's
- 7:14just, no one's listening. No one's showing up.
- 7:17Your podcast is evergreen. It's discoverable
- 7:20forever. Think of like TikTok videos. They're
- 7:23a flash in the pan. Like everyone's just going.
- 7:26scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll. Next one, next
- 7:28one, next one. Your podcast is a living, breathing
- 7:31thing. It's like planting a tree, right? You
- 7:33put it in there. You got to water it a little
- 7:35bit at first, but it's going to be there until
- 7:37a storm comes and rips it out or someone comes
- 7:40and chops it down. But that tree is going to
- 7:42be there for people to discover. A great example
- 7:45of this is I have a podcast called The Small
- 7:48Town Tourist. Haven't posted anything on that
- 7:50for a year and a half, but I just crested like
- 7:5312 ,000 down. loads on it. And when I quit making
- 7:56episodes, I think I was maybe at like 6 ,000
- 7:59downloads. Like it has somehow doubled without
- 8:01me doing anything. And that's because it was
- 8:03set up correctly with the right SEO, the right
- 8:07keywords in the show notes, in the titles, the
- 8:10blogs that I had created for it. People are still
- 8:13finding the show, listening to episodes, engaging
- 8:16with the online content. And I haven't done anything
- 8:18with it in 18 months. That's because it is an
- 8:21evergreen thing. When you make your podcast.
- 8:24It exists on the internet. It is your own media
- 8:27that you created. It's not a slave to, well,
- 8:30it kind of is a slave to algorithms sometimes
- 8:32depending on where you're sharing the content.
- 8:34But if you're building your own website, you're
- 8:36building your podcast out, that is your stuff.
- 8:38And people are going to find it if it is properly
- 8:41set up. They may not find it overnight. They
- 8:43might not find it next week, next month, heck,
- 8:45two years from now. But when they do find it,
- 8:47it's going to be valuable to them. It is going
- 8:49to be a resource to them. And that is something
- 8:51that takes time and energy. and effort. So if
- 8:54you're sitting there going, I just don't know
- 8:56if I should start this show. It just seems like
- 8:57a lot of work and no one's going to listen. Who
- 8:59would want to listen to me anyway? The people
- 9:01are out there. You just got to be brave enough
- 9:03to post it and patient enough to let it work.
- 9:06Thank you so much for checking out another episode
- 9:07of Abby the Podcast Lady. I am so excited to
- 9:11be making this show. I've been having such a
