- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to a podcast from News Talks'd be follow
- 0:12Speaker 1: this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
- 0:16Speaker 2: It's a big week for the country on the trade front,
- 0:18Speaker 2: of course, the East Asia Summit, followed by APEC and
- 0:20Speaker 2: South Korea, Trump and GA you headline X. So what
- 0:22Speaker 2: if anything tangible comes out of any of this or
- 0:25Speaker 2: all of this? Todd mcclay's the Trade Minister who is
- 0:27Speaker 2: on his way today and he's with us. Are we
- 0:30Speaker 2: getting an upgrade on our SCN Has that been sorted
- 0:32Speaker 2: or do we have to work through something for that
- 0:34Speaker 2: to happen?
- 0:35Speaker 3: So very close Trade Minister has met about a month
- 0:38Speaker 3: ago and agreed equivalent of language for the leaders and
- 0:41Speaker 3: then were to work through that allows an upgrade. Nothing
- 0:44Speaker 3: will happen quickly for New Zealand, though. It's the ability
- 0:47Speaker 3: for to sort of see a bit more integration. We're
- 0:50Speaker 3: all simplifying so our businesses and getting out of those
- 0:52Speaker 3: countries a lot more easily. That's a really big push
- 0:54Speaker 3: for us.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Is that a material thing where dollars flow?
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely it will be. So if you think if
- 1:00Speaker 3: you're a New Zealant company and you want to go
- 1:02Speaker 3: and set up in a Nassian country, you'll have different
- 1:05Speaker 3: rules in every single one, which is okay, but some
- 1:08Speaker 3: of the are quite prohibitive. So the idea that we
- 1:10Speaker 3: can have, you know, a bit more freer movement of
- 1:13Speaker 3: those businesses, it's easier for them to set up, easier
- 1:15Speaker 3: for them the trade will make a huge, huge difference.
- 1:18Speaker 3: I suppose the easiest way to look at it, Mike
- 1:20Speaker 3: is hasier. Pacific is a fast, just growing region in
- 1:24Speaker 3: the world. We sit right there on their doorstep. They're
- 1:26Speaker 3: very open to us, so if we can get role simplified,
- 1:29Speaker 3: it'll be much easier for Kiwis to do better there.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Are they more open given what's happened with America and
- 1:33Speaker 2: the other people who make the running shoes and they're
- 1:35Speaker 2: the ones being hit with forty percent, Well.
- 1:38Speaker 3: They've already for the last handfully has been quite open
- 1:40Speaker 3: to us. It's a very long agreement. You've seen quite
- 1:42Speaker 3: a few of their leaders either come down or our
- 1:44Speaker 3: Prime minister has been up there. But yes, there is
- 1:47Speaker 3: a new sense of dynamism there. They want to look
- 1:50Speaker 3: more broadly than some of their large and more traditional
- 1:53Speaker 3: trading partners in New Zealand, along with Australia, are an
- 1:55Speaker 3: easy pick for them.
- 1:56Speaker 2: What about the FTI and career as they're going to
- 1:59Speaker 2: be movement there.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Well, I've been having conversations with my colleague. They've just
- 2:04Speaker 3: had an election, so it's a new minister. We're talking
- 2:07Speaker 3: about that. It's we're at the stage we were talking
- 2:09Speaker 3: about levels of ambition. Both sides say, yes, it's time
- 2:12Speaker 3: to upgrade it. We want a really good upgrade. It's
- 2:14Speaker 3: a chance to modernize it because it was some time ago.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I think it's fair to say, as a result of
- 2:21Speaker 3: their election and your ministers, that's going to take a
- 2:22Speaker 3: little bit longer. But I'm on my way today. As
- 2:25Speaker 3: it's said, up to Coreer, I'll be pushing that along
- 2:27Speaker 3: with conversations with both China and the Chinese minister and
- 2:31Speaker 3: the US minister about better rules for New Zealanders and
- 2:34Speaker 3: in the case of the US, more certainty as to
- 2:37Speaker 3: what might have what not happen with tariff right good.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Just last week the EU that seemed all bullish.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Is it, yeah, very very positive. Their commissioner came down here.
- 2:47Speaker 3: In fact, he was on the eraplane more than he
- 2:49Speaker 3: was in the country. Flew down here for US five
- 2:51Speaker 3: hundred companies about two hundred from the EU came down.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Of course, this is to celebrate just over a year
- 2:57Speaker 3: of our free trade agreement, one point eight billion dollars
- 3:01Speaker 3: of extra exports from New Zealand goods exports up to
- 3:03Speaker 3: that market, and they're very keen to do more. He
- 3:06Speaker 3: and I have agreen will agreed, will do another. I'm
- 3:08Speaker 3: it up in Europe and it's just now about promoting
- 3:11Speaker 3: that agreement so that the trade can grow even more quickly.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Good go, well, appreciate it. Todd McClay, who's the Trade minister,
