- 0:02Relish pleasing or zestful flavor a quantity
- 0:05just sufficient to flavor to be pleased or
- 0:08gratified by enjoy we are hoping that what we bring to your table today might
- 0:13add some spice to your life welcome back to another episode of relish i am roan
- 0:19miller this is pastor don patterson how are you doing don i'm doing good yeah
- 0:24and this is the time of year that my mom used to make relish. Oh, yeah? Yeah, yeah.
- 0:28So it was the green tomatoes, the pickles, and the things that came out of the
- 0:31garden. They'd usually sit in the back porch for a week or two or three after the frost.
- 0:36And then we would grind them all up and make relish.
- 0:40Yeah, have them all ready for winter and cold months. Mm-hmm. Hot dogs.
- 0:44Right. Got to survive the miserable Midwest winter somehow. That's right. Yeah.
- 0:49And I wasn't even in Iowa then. It was in Kansas. Right. But we had winter in
- 0:54Kansas, believe it or not.
- 0:55And yeah, hamburgers with relish on it. Oh man, that does sound good.
- 1:02Yeah, until I'm hungry. You don't get too many hamburgers in the winter, but. Oh, you don't?
- 1:07Not as many as I might like in the summer. Okay, that's true.
- 1:10Yeah. Not grilling out quite as often. Right.
- 1:12That's true. Here's my question for you. All right.
- 1:16What has been your approach to reading the Bible, and has it changed over time?
- 1:22Yeah so um there was
- 1:25uh in the like january
- 1:29february usually our church would even before you
- 1:32had come we'd do like community readings so we
- 1:35would i would usually join the church for
- 1:38those cool and then when i was younger i kind
- 1:41of i was kind of only did in january february
- 1:44i didn't necessarily have a
- 1:47set plan or make a point to read every
- 1:50night or every morning when i woke up but kind of
- 1:53grown into that more and uh ben gifton's
- 1:56gifted several devotional books oh that kind of work through i know our youth
- 2:03group went through one of the rooted oh yeah and And see read a page or two
- 2:10and have some short question answers and discussions.
- 2:14I enjoyed that. So, yeah.
- 2:17Good. Somewhere, yeah. Usually the devotions will have a set of verses or whatever that go with them.
- 2:25So then I'll jump into the chapter or section that the devotion came from,
- 2:36kind of read that further.
- 2:38I did read through the Bible once. You mean you read farther than it said?
- 2:42Yeah. Okay, cool. Usually I would, but read through the Bible once. Excellent.
- 2:48I don't. And you understood it all. Well, most of it.
- 2:54But when you're reading through the Bible, I wouldn't recommend it for somebody
- 3:00that's like just getting to know the word. Right.
- 3:04Starting at the beginning of the Bible isn't necessarily where you should start. Usually it's weird.
- 3:12If you're picking up any other book, you'd either start at the beginning and
- 3:16if you don't like how that is, you might skip to the end and see how it ends.
- 3:21But you wouldn't be very pleased with the Bible necessarily if you did that.
- 3:26So you've got to start in the middle.
- 3:28Yeah, it can start in the middle. Maybe John or something like that.
- 3:33That's interesting. The Bible is different than any other book because starting
- 3:36at the beginning, oh, yeah, that's all good. You get to history and then you
- 3:39get to Numbers and Deuteronomy and Leviticus.
- 3:41And you go, sort of go, oh, and then, yeah, so. Right.
- 3:46I think that the time, overall time spent reading the Bible has definitely gone
- 3:52up over my years. So. Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.
- 3:56And now you're doing a broad podcast.
- 3:59Right. About the Bible and Christian faith and things like that.
- 4:02Yeah. Try to get to share with all of you guys out there, so. Yeah.
- 4:09Yeah, all those guys out there.
- 4:13I was wondering what you're doing there. I'm looking out there to see all the
- 4:16guys, all the people out there. Right.
- 4:19We'll jump in. I believe you have a faithful fruit of the Spirit with us. Right.
- 4:25And so Ron called me the other night and said, are you going to have the faithful
- 4:29ready for the fruits of the Spirit this week?
- 4:31And I, oh, thank you for reminding me. Yeah, we can do that.
- 4:35And yeah, so when we talk about these fruits of the Spirit, We're talking about
- 4:38Galatians, and we're in chapter 5, verses 22.
- 4:43The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
- 4:47goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. So we're winding down.
- 4:52And I was talking to Rowan before.
- 4:55Interestingly, these are all separate words in the Greek language.
- 5:01But when we talk about it in the English language, you know,
- 5:04gentleness and kindness, it's a sort of goodness.
- 5:07Yeah. They sort of mesh with each other in the English language.
- 5:11And so just be aware that we do have a word for each one.
- 5:16But translating from the Greek to the English isn't always easy.
- 5:19Here's another one when we talk about faithfulness.
- 5:22Faithfulness is not actually the word in the Greek. It's just faith, histos.
- 5:30It uses that one word. And so when we talk about a fruit being one of these,
- 5:38faithfulness, well, it's just faith. fruit of the Spirit.
- 5:45The fruit of the Spirit is faith.
- 5:49And so that's the bottom line when we get to this part. It is the word faith.
- 5:55What's nice about this is I don't have to define faith because the Bible itself defines faith.
- 6:02So when we go to Hebrews 11, verse 1, faith is being sure of what you hope for
- 6:08and certain of what you don't see.
- 6:11And then the entire passage in chapter 11 of Hebrews is talking about people of faith.
- 6:21And so, yeah, we'll just turn there because that might be easier. Yes.
- 6:29So we talk about by faith, Abel, by faith, Enoch, by faith, Noah,
- 6:34by faith, Abraham, by faith, Abraham.
- 6:37Again, Abraham's the biggest one. He's got three of them. and then Isaac and then Joseph and Moses.
- 6:42So then you have to realize, okay, what is it that by faith,
- 6:49These guys did. And look at these acts.
- 6:53Look at these things that they did because they had faith. Okay.
- 6:58Abel offered a better sacrifice. Okay.
- 7:00That seems to be one of the main
- 7:03hallmarks of difference between Cain's sacrifice and Abel's sacrifice.
- 7:09That Abel's sacrifice was anointed by his faith, if you will.
- 7:16And Enoch had such faith that he didn't even experience death.
- 7:21And so God, he had so much faith in God that he didn't die. He was just taken up.
- 7:29That's so cool. You think we could achieve that? I hope just working on it all
- 7:33the time. Yeah, that'd be fun.
- 7:39I don't fear death The dying part's what gets me,
- 7:45That just looks awful painful sometimes And long sometimes Noah, by faith Noah,
- 7:54When warned about the things not yet seen Holy fear, in holy fear Built the
- 8:00ark to save his family By faith By his faith he was,
- 8:05By faith, he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that was to come by faith.
- 8:11Okay, let's put that one in perspective.
- 8:14Because that's probably most helpful to us, as well as what happens with Abraham.
- 8:20When faith powers us, if you will, to do things that are beyond what reason can imagine.
- 8:31It's real stuff. Okay, so Alex had faith. He developed a podcast.
- 8:39And then he got us in the podcast. And that's faith.
- 8:44It moves you to do something outside your comfort zone, but it moves you to do it.
- 8:50Noah was moved to spend over 100 years and a lot of manpower to build a boat,
- 8:57when there'd never been a boat before for a rain when there'd never been a rain before.
- 9:05I mean, all these things, it's sort of, he's doing this by faith.
- 9:10So then when you go down and you look at Abraham,
- 9:14what he did by faith, he left his homeland, his cousins and all of his family,
- 9:20and he moved to a distant land because God wanted to create a people for himself.
- 9:25And he was going to start with Abraham.
- 9:27So he does it. He leaves all those things that we normally find comfort in,
- 9:33home, mom and dad's country cooking or mom and dad's Thanksgiving cooking,
- 9:40you know, it's getting right really close to that.
- 9:43And they give us comfort and we feel good about it. But by faith,
- 9:47these guys went towards what God was asking them to do.
- 9:53So, if a fruit of the Spirit is faith, we'll know that we have a fruit of the
- 10:00Spirit by the fact that we're going to do those kinds of things that God uniquely
- 10:04asks us to do. And we're going to do it,
- 10:09Like Noah did. I mean, he went right at it. Got all that gopher wood, put it together.
- 10:15He was also, like you compared him to us, he was also like publicly ridiculed.
- 10:20Oh my. Constantly being criticized for what he was doing.
- 10:24And I mean, we haven't experienced that for doing a podcast.
- 10:28Not yet, no. We haven't even.
- 10:30There might be somebody out there going to do that this week,
- 10:33but yeah. But yeah, we haven't got a lot of that. Not near the time that he
- 10:37was either. Right. So. Yeah.
- 10:39So it would be, faith would being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see.
- 10:46So, I mean, he hoped.
- 10:48I mean, God told him there was going to be this flood. He told him what was
- 10:52going to happen and gave him a solution.
- 10:57And he worked on that. So what do we hope for?
- 11:02I mean, I still hope for renewal in our community.
- 11:05That's one of the things I've prayed for, that in this home community,
- 11:09maybe even beyond that, now that we're on the World Wide Web with a podcast,
- 11:14that there would be some kind of renewal of an interest in what Christ is wanting to do,
- 11:20an interest in the church, interest in the things of faith, and such a renewal
- 11:28that lives are being changed.
- 11:30I want to see lives changed. yeah i like like i've seen god work in my own life
- 11:36i i want to see other people's lives changed,
- 11:40and find let them have faith so they have that fruit of the spirit in their lives,
- 11:46and i found that those people who have been uh touched by god often are able
- 11:52to touch people i can't get to you know all of a sudden they've been moved from
- 11:57one place to another because of their faith in God, and.
- 12:02All their friends go, what happened to you? And when they say, what happened to you?
- 12:07It gives an opportunity to share their testimony, what God really did in their life.
- 12:13And it's inspiring to people who are looking for that.
- 12:17You get a pastor who sat in the pulpit for 40 some years, you know, not near as exciting.
- 12:24You've already been there. Yeah. Kind of thing.
- 12:27But a fresh work of the Spirit, let's just put it in that light,
- 12:34a fresh work, a fresh fruit of the Spirit, often really gets people's attention.
- 12:41Yeah. And that's what I pray for. I'm hoping for that. I'm hoping it happens
- 12:46in my lifetime. Maybe it'll happen in yours. Right. Hopefully.
- 12:49Yeah. I know that for the younger upcoming generations,
- 12:54they feel that more of a connection and more open to people and leaders that's closer to their age.
- 13:06No offense, but somebody who's been around and has lots of experience.
- 13:12We'll just say lots of experience. Well, I'm a fossil, yes. But yeah, hopefully I can help.
- 13:19Younger people. Yeah. Right. I'm willing to share everything that I know with
- 13:24somebody else. Right. Because I can't take it with me.
- 13:29That's true. Yeah. I can't. Yeah. I can't. I might try, but I can't take it with me.
- 13:34It'll be gone when I am. Right. I can't take it with me.
- 13:38But yeah, I hope. I hope for revival. I hope for new things in communities.
- 13:44And I'd like to be a part of it. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Why wouldn't you? I,
- 13:52timestamp.
- 13:56All right well I believe that would that'll wrap it up for our episode,
- 14:02hope you guys enjoy continue to enjoy the fruits of the spirit but yes in real
- 14:08time yeah yeah this was faithfulness next week so,
- 14:13stay tuned for that next one and let us know if you have any other special episodes
- 14:19that you want Don to be able to prepare for ahead of time. Oh, that's true.
- 14:23So, cause we like to keep him on his toes and Like it's very hard to do that. Yeah.
- 14:30Yeah. Keep me on my toes. Yeah. See how fast I fall off.
- 14:36That is it for this episode. We'll see you next time. Thank you for joining us for this podcast.
