- 0:16Hello and welcome everybody to episode twenty one. Can now officially drink here on
- 0:20this pod episode twenty one of Cards and Categories. I am Mike Coolard from
- 0:24Rasball joined here. You're back, You're back. I'm back. Jeremy Brewer
- 0:29from Rasball. How you doing? But good? I hear. It's an
- 0:32upgrade from what you had just last week. While I was out of town
- 0:39visiting the great State of Texas and Global Life, Field had to go see
- 0:43how the Rangers were doing. They didn't win while I was there, but
- 0:47glad to be back. I hope that I can live up to the standard
- 0:52that has been set by our overseer, Gray. I got a lot to
- 0:58live up to, but I've got at least nineteen episodes in to draw from.
- 1:03Yeah, exactly, lots of big wealth of experience. And Yeah,
- 1:07it was great having Gray on his big thank you out to him again,
- 1:11and we learned a lot about Reggie Jackson and Gray's relationship with his father.
- 1:15So it was a very insightful psychological pod that we went very many layers deep.
- 1:22And you know what else is getting deep right now. We're recording this
- 1:25on Wednesday, December sixth, in the evening. We thought Wan Soto was
- 1:30going to the Yankees, and the trade talks are just going deeper and deeper.
- 1:34Last piece of news I saw on x or MLB trade rumors was that
- 1:42the medicals are being checked out by the Padres. And if you're I guess
- 1:47people in the future will kind of know. I'm almost expecting Juan Soto to
- 1:51move tonight or tomorrow morning, but it looks like he's going from the Padres
- 1:55to the Yankees for a package of pitching. So I'm pretty familiar with this
- 2:00package of pitching that they're the Yankees are sending over from my Waiver Wire columns
- 2:04because a lot of these dudes were shredding and double and triple A for the
- 2:07Yankees all year, and I thought they would be up. But here's kind
- 2:10of like the rumored names that are going from the Yankees to the Padres.
- 2:15It's going to be some mix of Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Johnny Brido,
- 2:22and it might even dip into like Will Warren or some other Yankees arms,
- 2:25but I think we'll start with those first three. King, Thorpe,
- 2:29and Brito Brew. It's a lot going on, and we thought that we
- 2:34were going to do this pod tonight that we wouldn't have anything to talk about
- 2:37from the winter meetings. That looked like it was a nothing burger. But
- 2:39if Wan Soda gets traded to the Yankees, that's a pre significant move that's
- 2:44gonna affect a lot of fantasy values. Yeah, I think it's a very
- 2:47very significant movement. I mean, how could it not be. It's one
- 2:51Sodo being traded. It's also crazy, twenty four year old Wan Sodo,
- 2:55probably one of the best players our generation's already been traded twice in his career
- 2:59or one in three quarters. At this point, we'll see the medicals get
- 3:02through. I just think that's kind of crazy. One of the best young
- 3:07players we've ever seen and he's moving around. But yeah, I think there
- 3:13is a lot of intrigue here. I actually like the return for the Padres
- 3:19for a one year of one so too. They had to move him.
- 3:22They were going to move him because they just couldn't take him that payroll anymore.
- 3:27Whether it's because they had back taxes or something like that, the loans
- 3:30they had to take out to meet their payroll. But I think that they
- 3:34did well. I know about a week back it sounded like the rumored package
- 3:38was basically the same that we're seeing now, and the Yankees were saying,
- 3:42no way, We'll never give up Michael King and Drew Thorpe to get one
- 3:46Soto, and that didn't make any sense. I think this is relatively a
- 3:51win win trade for both teams. The only piece from a real world perspective
- 3:57that I'm a little a little concerned about is I feel like the Yankees do
- 4:00need pitching and they just traded away a heck of a lot of young pitching.
- 4:04So I do really love Michael King. I do like Drew Thorpe as
- 4:10far as guys that can come up in Hampton, down in the in the
- 4:15miners, has a lot of potentials, so riteou So, I don't know.
- 4:19I really like a lot of the names here, and I think that
- 4:21there's gonna be some excitement. But let's let's start with Soto. What do
- 4:25you think? What does this do for one SODA's value going into next year
- 4:30in drafts? Is does this rocking him up the board? What do you
- 4:33think? I mean? I hate to be mister obvious here, but you
- 4:39put a left handed bat like that in Yankee Stadium and Honestly, he's gonna
- 4:44be pushing fifty sixty homers like he's gonna be pushing prime Gian Carlos Stanton,
- 4:48and it's gonna be pretty crazy that I'll find the the tweet to put it
- 4:57into the show notes. But I saw before the show a tweet of the
- 5:01overlay from stat cast of if you had put One Soto's twenty twenty three into
- 5:06Yankee Stadium. And let me tell you a lot of those outs and line
- 5:11drives that he hits and rockets off his back goes straight out in Yankee stadiums.
- 5:15So if he gets eighty games there, he's going to be rocketing up
- 5:19boards. He might go past Aaron Judge because Soto might run more the way
- 5:25that Judge ran in his year before hitting free agency. That if Sodo wants
- 5:29to prove that he's healthy, boosts his value a little bit. He might
- 5:32push upper teams and stolen bases. And he's been starting to rise off up
- 5:39draft boards anyway. That we a couple months ago when we did that first
- 5:44round twenty twenty four draft, we didn't really mention One Sodo too much.
- 5:48It was kind of an afterthought, even behind guys like Luise Robert and well
- 5:56obviously Kyle Tucker, but even like Matt Olsen, we were sidering over him,
- 6:00so he was kind of going firmly in the second round. He's up
- 6:04to fourteenth in the NFBC draft data now going from mid November. I'm looking
- 6:11at so November fifteenth through today. I'm sure if there were drafts today,
- 6:15it would be firmly in the top ten or twelve. So you've got to
- 6:19think his value is going to be rocketing, and hopefully he goes to the
- 6:24Yankees for people that are taking him this weekend. Yeah, I hate to
- 6:29disagree with you, but I'm going to put a little cold water on what
- 6:31you said there because you know, I'm looking at Savant and you know they
- 6:35do the expected home runs by ballpark. Now I will cavey out this,
- 6:40but they that they actually only map the home runs that the player hit in
- 6:44the previous season against the new ballparks. But Soto's home runs of the thirty
- 6:48five he hit and for the twenty twenty three season, eight of those would
- 6:54not have left the park in Yankee Stadium because he is such a spray hitter.
- 6:59Now, I think that there is probably logical adjustments that he makes and
- 7:03then some of those outs that work home runs would be So I don't know
- 7:08that I wouldna go fifty home runs. I think that he's solidly forty is
- 7:13definitely within reach, and he's such a talent hitter, you gotta think he's
- 7:16gonna make some adjustments. I firmly see him at the end of that first
- 7:20round, don't. I don't think he's gonna run enough to really threaten some
- 7:28of the top tier of the first round because you just you have to have
- 7:32speed. But if you look at all the hitters out there that don't run,
- 7:36he's number one. And if you're talking about obp leagues on base leagues,
- 7:42you know he's he's probably in the top five at this point just because
- 7:46of what he can bring in that aspect. Yeah, and so he's currently
- 7:50going as the twelfth bat off of the board in NFBC data that I was
- 7:57looking at from mid November. So let's see where you would move him up
- 8:01to. So right in front of him going thirteenth is Jose Ramirez. I
- 8:07tink soda Aaron Judge. I'm gonna take soda injury risk on Judge, But
- 8:15yeah, Trey Turner, give me Sodo still, Okay, Freddy Freeman,
- 8:24I think that's where it ends for me. I think I'll take Freeman there.
- 8:28I got enough question marks out. I actually the lineup in New York
- 8:31is not as strong as as you might want to think it is. He
- 8:35does get some protection, but not like he didn't have protection there in San
- 8:39Diego with Machado and Bogarts and the Teast, Like, yeah, move him
- 8:43from there to to Judge and DJ LeMay who and resilt like it's maybe less
- 8:50lineup protection that he has in New York, just has the better ballpark to
- 8:54hit in. So how about you? Where do you land in that that
- 9:00realm there? I think I'm at the same spot right now that I think
- 9:03I would take him over Jose Ramirez. Definitely Aaron Judge for the same reason,
- 9:09just a little more consistency, a little bit more floor. Most likely
- 9:13at Trade Turner. I'm starting to think right now I would just given what
- 9:18I saw trade Turner late in the year. But you know, things could
- 9:22change if he's looking spry again in the March, and I kind of fall
- 9:26for WBC trade Turner again, even though I know there's no WBC, but
- 9:30he was in prime form and Freddy Freeman is that one might be a coin
- 9:35flip as well. That I think that Freeman's going to offer more batting average,
- 9:39but less home fewer home runs, and so it depends on, you
- 9:45know, what the flavor of the day is. But Kyle Tucker is I
- 9:48wouldn't be taking him over Tucker just because Tucker probably gives you a thirty thirty
- 9:52floor and that would end up being the seventh off of the Nope, actually
- 10:01the eighth batter then, So yeah, I think we've got him in the
- 10:07same range. How about the flip side for the Yankees that those pictures Michael
- 10:13King is was really elite down the stretch, So I think this will probably
- 10:18provide maybe a boost and value because he's getting out of Yankee Stadium. He
- 10:22probably I guess this is all theoretical too, but like if he does move,
- 10:28it seems like he would be in this trade. But he was already
- 10:31a pretty hot name. I think gonna be on lots of sleeper picks.
- 10:35And what do you think about Michael King what he could do getting out of
- 10:39Yankee Stadium? Yeah, I think Michael King I really was really excited to
- 10:45tell him last year, even what he was doing in Yankee Stadium, and
- 10:48so I think leaving and going potentially to the NFL West, you know,
- 10:54outside of of the Coors factor, which we all all know. You just
- 10:56sit your mid mid level pictures against person you roll the rest. Uh,
- 11:01he's gonna have maybe a little bit easier time treading a few weaker teams,
- 11:07Uh to pitch it, pitch it against. And I mean, he he
- 11:09was just lights out on the stretch. You know. He he got eight
- 11:13starts at the end the end of the last year, and you know,
- 11:16he he only won one of those, so it's you know, the the
- 11:20win loss doesn't show it, and he didn't go terribly deep into games.
- 11:24But you know, across that time frame, he had just over eleven k
- 11:28per nine, barely over to walk per nine. His era was one eighty
- 11:35eight with a two forty seven FIP. So he was pretty lights out.
- 11:41And he only gave up more than one run in one of those starts,
- 11:46and it was that very last one of the season. And so he went
- 11:48a full seven starts in a row giving up one run or zero runs,
- 11:54you know, and and it wasn't like he was facing totally weak teams Houston,
- 12:00Boston, Toronto. He did face the Nationals, he did face the
- 12:03Royals. There was some in there, but he held his own. So
- 12:09I think Michael King's got a lot coming from him. There was not much
- 12:13in the luck metrics. He is a flyball pitcher, and so I think
- 12:18that that that is going to aid him in San Diego to a degree better
- 12:22than it did a Yankee stadium. So I like Michael King. I still
- 12:26think he's a sleeper of the problem being everybody's gonna know about him now,
- 12:30so I think it's gonna take a little that shine off the sleeper potential.
- 12:35Yeah, yeah, I agree that. I think that he's going to be
- 12:37a really hot name. And I do still find it surprising that he was
- 12:41kind of maybe the one that would hold up this trade for the Yankees that
- 12:46gave them pause that, especially given King's injury history with the broken elbow,
- 12:52that you would think that the Yankees would see that pitching is not the place
- 12:56to invest. And it's a little bit like that Dynasty player who hangs on
- 13:00to pitching too much and doesn't move it out that I'd totally be moving King
- 13:05for the chance to jump at one Sodo. Yeah, because I think there's
- 13:07nobody in this deal the Yankees are giving up that are proven. There's a
- 13:11lot of guys, a lot of things you can dream on, but there's
- 13:15nobody that is proven. King could easily blame out next year. Right,
- 13:20He's still got risk. He's not a top twenty pitcher. He's not a
- 13:22top thirty pitcher. You're taking him mid to late draft hoping that that fire
- 13:28is still there. And if you own him then the last year you're probably
- 13:31overpaying for him just because you want to recapture what you had. Speaking as
- 13:35a Michael King owner myself, So yeah, Michael King's He'll be fun to
- 13:41watch for sure. Yeah, definitely. And the other big news that came
- 13:45out the Winter meetings was actually at the beginning on Sunday, Jackson Cheerio from
- 13:50the Milwaukee Brewers, their hot prospect, their number one prospect, was signed
- 13:56to an extension and so that will him on the big league roster right out
- 14:01of the gate next year, no worries about whether he will be held down.
- 14:05And this comes on the heels of Turio just absolutely shredding double a as
- 14:11a nineteen year old last year that over one hundred and twenty two games down
- 14:15there, he hit twenty two home runs with forty three stolen bases. That
- 14:18came with eighty four runs eighty nine ribs with a two eighty three thirty six
- 14:24four sixty seven line only a one twelve WRC plus. But like I said,
- 14:28came as a nineteen year old in a really high level league. He
- 14:31showed that he belonged. I think that long term, he's got a little
- 14:35bit of a question on his hit tool that Fangrafts has it as a current
- 14:39thirty future forty five. And he held the strikeouts down in double A though
- 14:46he only struck out eighteen percent of the time, still had that big power.
- 14:48Slugged for sixty seven with an ISO of one eighty six. So he's
- 14:54providing the homers and the steals and the speed. I think you can tell
- 15:01that I really like him. I brew he's going to be rocketing, rocketing
- 15:05up boards, especially given how corpor and Carroll played last year for the d
- 15:09Backs. Where's the Where's the limit? Where's the sky for Jackson Churio and
- 15:16drafts going into next year? Yeah, I think the sky is if you
- 15:20want him, you got to draft him early. And obscenely early to your
- 15:26point, corpor and Carroll kind of ruined it for some folks. Now,
- 15:31I think it's a little different scenario. I think Carol had a lot more
- 15:35experience, a little bit older. There's a little bit more as they meet
- 15:39on the bone there with being able to project that out Cheerio. I think
- 15:46it's got a sky level of talent. But everybody's going to be after him
- 15:50because that you want to find the one. You want to be the guy
- 15:52that grabs him. I feel to claim at the end of the season,
- 15:56I saw it, I knew it, I invested, and I tend to
- 16:00think you're gonna have to overpay if you want him. I likely want owned
- 16:03shares Chariot next year. He is the guy that I am guaranteed I'm going
- 16:08to nominate in auction drafts early. I'm gonna spend your money on Jackson Curio
- 16:15because there's a lot of risk. He is, you know, a nineteen
- 16:19year old kid. He will be twenty by opening day. There's gonna be
- 16:26a learning curve there is, and you know he's played a whole six games
- 16:30above double A. So despite all the things you want to dream about him,
- 16:36you can it's there's just a lot of variability, and I think there's
- 16:38gonna be other guys. Somebody else is going to probably pay more than I'm
- 16:44willing to. Yeah, and I think that's probably gonna be the case for
- 16:48me. But I can also get behind a lot of the hype that like
- 16:52if it is somebody where you know, maybe not in an auction draft and
- 16:56you're in a snake draft, And honestly, if he's coming back to like
- 17:00the back end of the top one hundred, I start getting a little itchy
- 17:07just because I'll let you look up at his like ADP value since the announcement
- 17:11of his extension. But I think this is a guy where the ceiling is
- 17:17just crazy. I saw him last spring out in Arizona during spring training,
- 17:22and he looks so much like Fernando Taptist junior. He's a little bit smaller
- 17:26stature, he's only five to eleven, but it's the same sort of body
- 17:30frame and the same sort of athleticism and whip to just the swing overall that
- 17:37you can see pretty easily how it's going to work. And I'm trying to
- 17:41learn a little bit from last year, given where Corbyn Carroll was going in
- 17:45drafts and like, I think we should have all known a little better to
- 17:48be pushing him a little bit higher up given the performance. And I think
- 17:53this is a guy that you know, like I said, even probably like
- 17:57around eighty, I'm starting to think a little bit because it will be a
- 18:03decent lineup in Milwaukee. I like the park. It's a pretty good division,
- 18:07and you know what, it's a good spot to take a risk,
- 18:11especially if you do start really solid with you know, something like Freddie Freeman,
- 18:17Jose Ramirez. You know, you can take a little bit bigger risk
- 18:21when it comes round to maybe like your sixth, seventh, eighth pick,
- 18:23and I would start to think about Cheerio there. But where's he going to
- 18:27adp right now? Yeah? So right now? And we've got a whole
- 18:32three drafts on the FBC, a lots of data. It's a take from
- 18:36here. He's going about one forty overall off the board of all players,
- 18:41not just hitters. From a hitter perspective, that's I think you nailed it.
- 18:45Just about hit her top eighty. It's right about eighty is where he's
- 18:49going. So I'm gonna throw some names that you hear guys that would be
- 18:55going right about that that level. So I'm gonna pick a few just fun
- 19:02ones that are around him. Okay, so we've got Francesco Alvarez catcher from
- 19:08the Mets, Cheerio, unless I'm really desperate for a catcher, all right,
- 19:15Anthony Bulpe, Actually that's not a bad spot. I actually would probably
- 19:23go Volpi personally, just because I think that Welby went through a lot of
- 19:30tough things last year, and Cheerio hasn't. Evan Carter. I take him
- 19:37over Evan Carter, I Think'stedrick Mullins. I think I would take him over
- 19:44Cedric Mullens. Here's the thing. Here's Cheerio's line right now. They's projected
- 19:48for in Steamer, which I mean Steamer is not the greatest. Will get
- 19:51a little bit better when some of the projections with batter ball data come out.
- 19:57But Steamer has him for six homers, sixteen stolen bases, around sixty
- 20:03runs a RBI with a two fifty average. And if that's the floor,
- 20:07I mean, I think that's about where Evan Carter's floor is as well.
- 20:12Yeah, and I think you know, as I read some of those names
- 20:15that you had jumped up me about tens ten adp above where or earlier than
- 20:22what he was going. And as I look at kind of what's developing next
- 20:26year, there seems to be kind of a cliff around fifty to sixty of
- 20:30the top hit top one hundred hitters, where like you look at those guys
- 20:34like, yep, that's a that's a guy. I'm one team, and
- 20:37then you start to get into a lot of guys that have question marks something
- 20:41that you're like, okay, what you know. You got your Lane Thomas's,
- 20:44you got your Spencer Toorklesen's, you got your Jordan Walker's, your Volpez,
- 20:49your Gabriel Moreno's, you're Ian Happs, you know, guys like that
- 20:56Max Bunzie. And then you got guys like uh, Jackson Turrio and Wyatt
- 21:03Langford that are kind of sitting in that range and it's like you're you're there's
- 21:08a there's a red mark against them somewhere across the profile. The red mark
- 21:14against like a Cheerio and like a Lengthford is we just don't there. They
- 21:17haven't played in the majors. Whereas you got to look at a guy like,
- 21:21you know, Gabriel Moreno, like he's seems like he's come. He's
- 21:25having a coming out party with like the World's series in the playoffs. So
- 21:29but is it gonna continue? So you've got those question marks. Like I
- 21:33said, I probably won't owe him, but right now I'm actually don't mind
- 21:36him too much. Where he's going in that ADP. I think it's gonna
- 21:38rise, especially if he has a strong spring. It's gonna it's gonna rocket
- 21:45at that point. Yeah, And I think what I also like is that
- 21:48the floor is pretty decent because he's got the glove to play, and even
- 21:53if he hits eighth or ninth and kind of works his way through it at
- 21:57the plate, they're gonna want his defense in center field, and that's gonna
- 22:02mean stolen bases. He's got a lot of speed, and especially if the
- 22:07bat's not working when he gets on, he might be hungry to steal some
- 22:10bases and show what he can do on the offensive side. So it's pretty
- 22:14easy to see him having a floor of Estuary Ruiz with more homers, you
- 22:21know that, Like, it's not that hard to produce that type of line
- 22:25when you've got the speed in the in the playing time, the way that
- 22:27Jackson Curio will. Yeah, and you have to think they're gonna, you
- 22:32know, the Brewers are not aiming to compete next year. They're gonna say
- 22:36they are, but right, let's let's let's be honest. It's not where
- 22:38they're kind of you know, aiming towards. And they're gonna, you know,
- 22:44with a new competitive balance agreement. You know, they're they're gonna want
- 22:49to get the you know, potential draft pick compensation for like the rookie of
- 22:56the year things like that. They're gonna want to start him early. And
- 23:00I Milwaukee was just outside the top ten and stolen bases last year. And
- 23:06I wouldn't say that. I mean, they had some guys could run,
- 23:07but it was one of those, you know, outstanding speed. So I
- 23:11think you're right. I think he's gonna get a lot of opportunity to run.
- 23:15He just has I think that you just have a lot more variability with
- 23:21a guy like him. But hey, William contrerostule six bases last year for
- 23:23the Brewers, So what Conturio do? Yeah, exactly, And you want
- 23:29to talk about variability or you were also talking about guys with warts on them
- 23:33a little bit. Let's move on to the next transaction that happened this week,
- 23:37and that is Jared keller Nick going from the Mariners to the Braves as
- 23:41the Braves were picking up the salary that came along with keller Nick and Evan
- 23:47White and Marco Gonzalez already shipped Marco Gonzalez to Pittsburgh, so that I think
- 23:51will be a really good sleeper in like NL onlies. But we'll focus on
- 23:55keller Nick here because he's going to have the most applicability leagues out there,
- 24:00and it's kind of crazy to see the Mariner is giving up on him.
- 24:04He's only going to be twenty four, and this is a guy that's had
- 24:08a lot of hype but also a lot of issues in terms of being able
- 24:12to put the bat on the ball and not strike out sometimes, also struggle
- 24:18a lot with off speed pitches. He can hammer a fastball. But the
- 24:22other low key thing here that I kind of want to get your take on
- 24:26is roster resource with this move, because it shuffled the bottom of the Braves
- 24:30lineup that I think Kellnick is what he is and like, you know what
- 24:33you're taking and trying to pop a little bit that upside, but most likely
- 24:38won't get to it. That Kellen Nick moved Michael Harris up in the order,
- 24:45and we both like Michael Harris a lot, but we always were saying
- 24:48that the problem is he was batting ninth. Michael Harris is batting six.
- 24:53That's a pretty sneaky value. And so I want to hear a little bit
- 24:56of your takes on Kellnick going to the braves and what that also might mean
- 25:00for Michael Harris's overall value here. Yeah, I I I personally think it's
- 25:07it's it's it's very interesting. I've long been interested in Jared Kelnick. I
- 25:11think he has a ton of potential. He has a beautiful swing, and
- 25:18he's everything he's done in the minors has shown that he has the capability it,
- 25:23and he's just he has not I has not got the chance to prove
- 25:27it. He's been hurt, he's you know, been shuttled back and forth
- 25:32with the miners. He just hasn't had a chance to really establish himself.
- 25:34And I think the expectations were heaped upon him. So I think he's a
- 25:40great change of scenery guy. You know, I think it's pretty clear what
- 25:42the Mariners trying to do with I think they've with their moves that they've had
- 25:47just a soft season with not offering the Graftic compensation, the qualifying offer to
- 25:53Tesca Hernandez. By letting go, you know, take care of Kellen and
- 26:00Mark Gonzales a few other moves. I think they've opened up like twenty five
- 26:03million and payroll that they can still play with the rest of the season.
- 26:08Uh So, Jerry over there still got some some moves up his sleeves.
- 26:11But back to kellenick, I I really like this move for him because he's
- 26:18not going to be relied upon. They're they're hoping they find something, and
- 26:22they clearly see something in him that they're willing to pay for. And of
- 26:27all the teams to go on to with a great lineup where you don't have
- 26:33to be the the guy like he's, he's so far from the guy.
- 26:37He's Eddie Rose Rosario for the Braves, right, He's in that kind of
- 26:41that position. So I think he has a chance to really get a fresh
- 26:45start and you don't get his footing in the majors. And I think I'll
- 26:49be picking up some some some shares latent drafts because I think he can turn
- 26:56it around. And again, he's got a decent floor. He's with his
- 27:04speed, he's always gonna hit probably that two fifty to sixty range at at
- 27:08a minimum, and he's gonna run. He's gonna hit, you know,
- 27:12for power, so you're not late in the draft. There's a lot worse
- 27:18things you can do than take Kellen Nick. So I like Kellennick there.
- 27:22I think you make a great point on Michael Harris. I I'm not sure
- 27:26I need to see it to believe it with Harris, because yeah, roster
- 27:30resource moves him up. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Braves leave him
- 27:33right where he's that second leadoff hitter, kind of keep him there, you
- 27:40know he's there's not the pressure, kind of same thing with Kellen Nick,
- 27:42where you're there for the defense, you're there for a speed, You're there
- 27:45to get on base and be another guy on base when we get around the
- 27:48line for our masters. So I'm not quite buying into it yet on Harris,
- 27:53but I think it's it's given him an upside path that he did not
- 27:59have before. Yeah. Absolutely, And it makes a lot of sense because
- 28:02it allows the Braves to go righty, lefty, righty. If you move
- 28:07Harris up and I think it makes sense to probably move Harris up over moving
- 28:11kell Nick up, just because Harris makes better contacts, so you can count
- 28:17on him getting some of those runs in. And yeah, if you're in
- 28:19a dynasty and a Michael Harris owner might not have noticed that possibility, it
- 28:26might be the time to jump before spring training because and if not, like
- 28:32still Michael Harris will be hitting ninth and have now kell Nick and Rcia and
- 28:36Murphy in front of him, that like, there's still plenty of opportunities that
- 28:40it's gonna easily be the best nine hole hitter in the entire league. Yeah,
- 28:44it's it is. It is funny. The one other interesting fallout I
- 28:48see from this is von no von Grissom has like no chance for playing time
- 28:55anymore. Yeah, he kind of. I guess he blew his chance by
- 28:59not hitting last year. And I wouldn't be surprised. I don't think the
- 29:03Braves are done. I would not be surprised to see him in a different
- 29:07uniform comes spring. Yeah, and you know, if it's kind of moved
- 29:11to a place where there's an opportunity to get some good play in time,
- 29:14I think that'd be good for him and he'd definitely be kind of a sleeper
- 29:18going to next year if he gets an opportunity elsewhere. Yeah, and this
- 29:22is maybe, like I think, a sleeper place for Corbyn Burns to end
- 29:27up that it's out of division. You look at their rotation right now,
- 29:33it's got Bryce Elther and Oscar youdonoah at the back end of it right now,
- 29:37and and Ian Anderson coming off of Tommy John. That doesn't include Smiths
- 29:42Shaver being involved in the rotation right now, and then you've also got guys
- 29:48like Dylan Dodd and Darius Vines. But it would be a nice spot for
- 29:52Corbyn Burns and they've got the pieces to do it, especially if they're going
- 29:56to put von Grisom on the table. I think that hockey would enjoy some
- 30:02really nice cost control bats like that, So it quick match up. Yeah,
- 30:07I actually I think that's a really great call. I think there's a
- 30:10really good interesting match there with with Milwaukee. Uh, good for players and
- 30:15teams alike. So, uh, it'd be interesting to see what comes next.
- 30:21We have had, I say, a relatively quiet winter meetings, and
- 30:25I guess, let's be honest, everybody's waiting for one thing, right now
- 30:29rumored two happened this weekend last last I saw, which is I have to
- 30:36say the free agency has been one of the most bizarre free agencies we've had
- 30:40in a long time, with his desire to keep it all secretive, which
- 30:44is great respect him for it that nothing nothing against that, but as a
- 30:48as a fan, it makes it really interesting because it's like nothing's happening except
- 30:52for he's thinking about it. He'll make a decision, and you know,
- 30:57it's gonna it's gonna hurt me to know. And if we go through all
- 31:00this and just goes back to the Angels and it's just gonna be like,
- 31:04well was those pop pop and circumstance for and the rest of the market's just
- 31:07gonna you know, breathe a sigh of relief and go crazy on everything else.
- 31:11So yeah, that will be I wonder if it will happen this weekend.
- 31:17I'm not totally counting on it, but I you're just trying to avoid
- 31:22talking about these next transactions we have in the rundown, aren't you that I
- 31:26am trying to avoid. No, there's some fun ones. Let's let's get
- 31:27there. That's gonna say. They've still been learning from Gray just let me
- 31:30go. Yeah that the next one. I mean, this one isn't as
- 31:36fun as the first three we were trying to go over. And that's Alex
- 31:41Erdugo actually being traded to the Yankees. This is a real life trade that
- 31:44already happened. We don't have to theorize anything here that Alex Erdugo should be
- 31:48opening as the left fielder right now for the Yankees as he moves from Boston
- 31:53to New York in a rare match of those teams making a transaction together.
- 32:00So I think a lot of the things that we just said about Juan Soto
- 32:02being a left handed bat moving into Yankee Stadium applied to Dugo. But Ridigo
- 32:08doesn't hit the ball as hard. He's not hitting it quite as far.
- 32:13He had a pre recent stadium to play in before, in Boston, it
- 32:15was a really good hitters park, So overall, like it might not provide
- 32:22too much of an offensive boost. And on top of it, like,
- 32:24I don't know what he's gonna look like without facial hair on, so it
- 32:30might be a little weird, and who knows how that's going to affect his
- 32:32confidence. I just like knowing Alex Radugo is kind of like he's a bit
- 32:37of a cocky player and a bit of a show off. That it's going
- 32:43to be an interesting mixing him in New York. And I don't know if
- 32:45I like that mix too much. Yeah, that's always the funny thing about
- 32:52New York is there's of all the places you can go, I feel like
- 32:55New York's the only one that has this weird and negative and tangible that like
- 33:01they seem to Again maybe it's just my perception. They seem to be a
- 33:06little bit behind the league as far as adapting using technology, using data.
- 33:13They are also behind times with the requirements on facial hair. There's the pressure
- 33:17of being New York. Like a guy can crumble just mentally in New York.
- 33:23I think one of my favorite guys, Sonny Gray and and like he
- 33:27just was not allowed to do anything in New York. And there's a number
- 33:30of players that have like got out of there like yeah, man, I
- 33:34can go do something now. So that that's an interesting thing. Aside that
- 33:38said, Verdugo, unlike Sodo, is that straight pole hitter, and so
- 33:45I think, you know, he is one. He's probably gonna get a
- 33:47little bit more boost from the power perspective than so Soda does. I don't
- 33:53think it's going to be anything incredible. You know, Verdugo is never going
- 33:55to be a thirty home run hitter. That's just not who he is.
- 34:00But I think he's going to probably run into a few more thanks to the
- 34:05short porch than what we see Soto do as far as maybe a percentage increase
- 34:10on the power. So interesting spot for Dugo. I think it's it is
- 34:16a good move for them. They need some solid hitting, and I think
- 34:20that's what he is. He's a solid hitter, not much beyond it.
- 34:24Yeah, I think so too, And Steamer's already calling for more homers things
- 34:29ever hit in his career at fifteen, his career high at thirteen that he
- 34:32did last year and in twenty twenty one that I just didn't. What I
- 34:37liked about for Dugo previously was the batting average floor and almost asset. But
- 34:43if he's going to be hitting in the two sixties again, it really wipes
- 34:46out a lot of that good work because then you're behind in he doesn't run
- 34:52for you, he doesn't hit enough homers, he doesn't run drive in enough
- 34:55runs. That the only asset that he has is runs and if he's not
- 35:00hitting at the top of the Yankees lineup, he turns into Angrew beinin Tendee
- 35:06real quick and can be just left for a lot of waiver wires out there.
- 35:13Okay, we got another move that happened in the Al East today and
- 35:17that is Craig Kimberrell signing with the Baltimore Orioles. That I didn't think about
- 35:22this spot for Craig Kimberrell on a one year deal, but it makes a
- 35:27lot of sense, and for me, I think you can almost take a
- 35:30season from what he did this year with the Phillies. They had a pretty
- 35:34similar bullpen structure in terms of Craig kimberl is not the best reliever in that
- 35:37bullpen, but he was called upon as the closer a lot and allowed him
- 35:43to get to a decent amount of saves that made him usable in fantasy.
- 35:47I think that's going to happen again here in Baltimore with Junior Cano taking a
- 35:52lot of the more high leverage work and taking a good handful of saves from
- 35:55Kraig Kimberrell. But Baltimore is a good enough team that you can probably pencil
- 36:00him in for probably literally the exact same season that he put up in Philadelphia
- 36:05this year. And so brewd are you on the same page there or what
- 36:09are you thinking about Craig Kimberrell in the Baltimore Orioles Clubhouse. Yeah, I'm
- 36:15I'm kind of right there with you. I it made too much sense when
- 36:20I when I first saw the rumor break, I'm like, yep, that
- 36:23that we should have seen that one coming. That it made. It made
- 36:27a lot of sense with them putting in there because they can get one on
- 36:30one year deal. It's not gonna cost a lot. They can use them
- 36:32as a bridge to get when Latista back. So I think that there's a
- 36:37lot to be said for for the Orioles making that move. I think you're
- 36:42right. It's kind of like you sign him up for the same season he
- 36:45just had. The question is when does he implode? And well, maybe
- 36:47we'll be able to withstand that hump, because you know what Camberl is what
- 36:52one, two, three inning? Or Jason Isreeenhausen. So it's you know,
- 36:58there is no in between. It's either you're having a heart attack or
- 37:01you're thrilled. And is if you go in knowing that don't go in for
- 37:07you know, a ratio guy or something like that. You're buying Kimberrell for
- 37:09the saves, and in Baltimore he's going to have similar opportunities in Philadelphia.
- 37:15So yeah, I think it makes a lot of sense. I think that's
- 37:19probably about the best landing spot he possibly could have had. The only thing
- 37:23that it irks me for is I really was hoping Robert Stevenson was going to
- 37:29land in Baltimore because I could just I thought he would just be lights out
- 37:34as that Briverige Batista. So I was hopeful for that, And I now
- 37:38no longer think Robert Stevenson ends up with a closer role on a team looking
- 37:43for a stop gap. So yeah, and I think a lot of like
- 37:50what makes using Craig kimberl easier in fantasy is to not pay attention to that
- 37:54roller coaster because if you didn't, if you just drafted him and forget it
- 38:00in your lineup, here's what he would have done for you. He would
- 38:02have given you a three twenty six ear array with a one oh four whipth
- 38:08this year you're not gonna count. I'm not going to pencil him for a
- 38:10one oh four whip. No, I'm not either. He had a one
- 38:14thirty two the year before with the Dodgers. But again, I think that
- 38:17was a little extenuating circumstance, you know what I mean that like, it
- 38:22wasn't a good fit in LA that Steamer has him for a one to twenty
- 38:25three. I think that's probably pretty fair somewhere in the middle. But he
- 38:30would have also give you ninety four k's and sixty nine innings with twenty three
- 38:35saves. And I think that in the chaos of Craig Kimberl and seeing him
- 38:40in the playoffs, you can forget about what numbers he's actually putting up over
- 38:45the entire season. And that was a huge positive value for where Kimberle was
- 38:49going in drafts that you know he was well within you know, the back
- 38:54end of the teams and maybe even the twenties and closers and going late in
- 39:00auction drafts for a few bucks. If that's gonna happen again, then sign
- 39:05me up all day, because that is a lot of k's out of reliever
- 39:08and it's tough to find twenty twenty saves just kind of out of nowhere,
- 39:14So Kimberle's gonna be pretty sneaky, and I think that's a really great fit
- 39:16for him in Baltimore. Yeah, I mean, the guy's averaged twenty three
- 39:20saves last three years, with the highest era of a three point four to
- 39:23nine and more than a k per inning. Like, yes, he tell
- 39:29you make if you a heart attack, but you're right. The only thing
- 39:30that could have been could have been better is he went to a West Coast
- 39:34team, so you just set your lineup and you know, wake up in
- 39:36the morning and see if you got a save or not. But yeah,
- 39:39you're absolutely right, Like he's the kind of guy you have to buy being
- 39:44willing to deal with the ups and downs. Like if you're the guy that's
- 39:47gonna be reactive, Kimberl's not for you, you have to he is in
- 39:53for the long haul. And I will also own at some point he's gonna
- 39:57be done, Like he's one of those guys that like, when it happens,
- 40:00it's gonna be horrendous. But I think we got a year or two
- 40:04before that implosion and he's never seen again, so that I like this for
- 40:09Craig Gimbrel, And it's crazy to think that Kimberl's better. This will be
- 40:15his like fourteenth season in the majors. He's he's definitely racking up some saves.
- 40:21You you don't you're probably looking at it now. His career saves four
- 40:23hundred and seventeen. Yeah. Oh no, I mean I was gonna say,
- 40:28when you're talking about him adding a year or two, like he's a
- 40:31year two away from being just about a surefire Hall of Famer. He's essentially
- 40:36got the least smith resume, and yes he does. It's about the same
- 40:40amount of teams bouncing around. But yeah, so especially if he can add
- 40:45somebody cool after the Orioles, you know, like throwing a devil rays or
- 40:52you know, d Bax, so that like his his immaculate grid will like
- 40:54supreme. I need Kimberl on the Yankee, so he has to shave.
- 41:00I think that would be that would just that would be icing on the cake.
- 41:06I don't know if that'll ever happen, but no, I'll think.
- 41:07So all right, I'm gonna make you entertain me here on one last transaction
- 41:13that yep, just because things have been so boring, as you said,
- 41:16from the winter meetings, this has risen to the level of the next kind
- 41:22of major transaction that happened, and that is Eric Fetti coming back from the
- 41:27KBO signing with the White Sox after winning the MVP and the KBO and being
- 41:34absolutely lights out that other players that have come across like this have been you
- 41:38know, Merrill, Kelly, Miles, Nicholas, I think came from Japan
- 41:43or was a KBO. I think it was KBO. Yeah too. Yeah,
- 41:47I will douse all that in water though by saying like I looked into
- 41:53Fetti's pitch mix a little bit while he was in the KBO. You have
- 41:57that information on Fangrass, which is really nice. They have a lot of
- 42:00that info, and it doesn't look like the speeds of his offerings have changed.
- 42:07Dressed, his slider changed and so I don't know if he turned it
- 42:10into like a gyro slider, but everything else looks to be about in line
- 42:15with what he was throwing here in He was just here in twenty twenty two
- 42:20being shelled for the Nationals the way he always was in his career. And
- 42:23so I think that there's some people that are kind of looking at the Meryl
- 42:29Kelly Miles, Micheliss path that is going on here with Eric Fetti coming from
- 42:35the DC Dinos or n C Dinos my bad, not the DC Dinos.
- 42:38And I'm just going to douse that in water because this is Eric Fetti we're
- 42:44talking about, and guess we're all desperate to talk about something, so this
- 42:47is why it's risen to the level of getting shriff here on this podcast and
- 42:53everywhere else. But Brew, do you see any glimmers of hope in the
- 42:57Fetti profile? Are you also dousing water on this? I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 43:00have a little more glimmer than than you do, because I think that the
- 43:02uh and this is guy I spent a little time reading on Fetti because I'm
- 43:07my first reaction, uh solely and I will own this. It came from
- 43:10the card collecting side of things, which is like, how many Eric Fetti
- 43:15cards have you seen for like a dollar? Because he was up and coming
- 43:19things, I'm thinking like patch rookie patch autos for a dollar. But yeah,
- 43:24it's just like the Fetti's were just like everywhere. I'm like, man,
- 43:28if only I had cash stimps. But I as I was reading,
- 43:32you know, Fetti, after he left, he actually went to a you
- 43:38know kind of a drive line type facility and really spent time working on his
- 43:44pitch shaping his pitch mix, and from what I understand, he switched some
- 43:50of his pitchers like his I think a slider switched more to like more of
- 43:53a sweeper. And so I don't know with the metrics coming out of the
- 44:00KBO how advanced they are and tracking some of those. So I'm very curious
- 44:06to see and I don't know how to prove this if the changes he made
- 44:09to his pitch mix are being reflected in the numbers, or if the pitch
- 44:15shapes are somewhat similar but they are significantly different pitches. And so I think
- 44:21that there's because he made an effort and knowingly changed the shapes of his pitches
- 44:30and then had the results. I think it's at least intriguing. It is
- 44:34still Eric Fetti, and so I will own that. Like I'm not spending
- 44:37a whole lot of money here. I'm thinking you're at the auction draft and
- 44:40you're throwing, you know, you're towards the end. It's like, here's
- 44:43three bucks on Eric Fetty and I could cut him in a month and be
- 44:46perfectly fine. But like the numbers in the KBO, you can't ignore them.
- 44:52You know, it was insane. I think what was his He was
- 44:58twenty and six two o e or a uh, two hundred nine strikeouts,
- 45:02one hundred and eighty Indians and he only walked thirty five guys. That is
- 45:07nothing at all like the picture he was on us soil. So I think
- 45:14that that's I think there's I'm intrigued for the fact that it seems like his
- 45:21strikeouts jumped and his control improved over there, And if it truly came as
- 45:28a result of focusing on using the data at his pitch shapes that he'd never
- 45:32done before, I'm willing to gain. I'm willing to gamble on it,
- 45:37but I'm not You have to also think Mike Liss and Mary Kelly. They
- 45:42dominated over in the KBO as well, and neither and I think from even
- 45:46from a strikeout perspective, I recall both of them were, you know,
- 45:50big strikeout pictures there. Neither one has come over and been a big strikeout
- 45:53pitcher. So I think that there's you know, expecting Amer Kelly or or
- 46:00Miles Michaelis's result is probably your best case scenario. So yeah, I'm more
- 46:07intrigued than you are, but it's still Eric Fetti. Yeah, And I
- 46:13think maybe I would have a little more faith in him if he didn't go
- 46:16to the Socks. Like if there's anybody where you can count on like regression
- 46:22happen because they just don't know what they're doing, it's somebody on the Socks
- 46:27that you know, if it had gone to an organization that has a really
- 46:30strong pitching development, you know, like the Astros would have been obviously like
- 46:37really great, or the Twins or even the Reds. The Reds have been
- 46:39really good at developing pitching recently. I think it also would have told you
- 46:45that they saw something. But going to the Socks, I don't think they
- 46:49look at anything. And so except for like surface level stats, and you
- 46:54are lining this up with he he lines up really nicely with like the rates
- 47:00that he put up in Korea that he also put up kind of similar rates
- 47:06in twenty nineteen in double A. It was only twenty four innings. But
- 47:09like you look at just kind of like the level of competition in Korea,
- 47:14and he's not going to come here to the States and allow only less than
- 47:19half of all homer per nine. He's not going to get the socks are
- 47:22not going to provide him a seventy nine point six percent left on base percentage
- 47:28that it seems like FEddi found some magic because you know, he was able
- 47:34to locate his pitches against these Korean bats and being able to like have a
- 47:39defense that played behind him, and so that's not going to happen in Chicago.
- 47:44So I think, like, yeah, it's just I don't I can't
- 47:47think of a scenario where I really want to like take any chance on him,
- 47:52because I think there's a really good chance he's going to be just have
- 47:58a really blow to Dra down on the SaaS side with the socks and giving
- 48:01up Homer's game. After game, I'll make my final pitch, my final
- 48:06pitch for Eric Fetty. His ground ball rate in Korea. Did you see
- 48:10who ground ball rate was? No, I didn't scroll down that far.
- 48:14Seventy percent. That is the the highest groundball rate of any major league pitcher
- 48:20last year with more than one hundred innings was Logan Web at sixty two percent.
- 48:23And you know, if I look at a potential comp for Eric Fetti,
- 48:30Logan Web is a pretty good comp. You know, an eight K
- 48:34for nine good control, keeps the ball on the ground. Now, there's
- 48:37a little difference in pitching in San Francisco dand pitching in Chicago, but I
- 48:44think that's kind of the comparison, maybe a Marcus Stroman type like that's the
- 48:51type of picture that I think Fetti could be in the majors. Uh So,
- 48:55to your point, white socks, you're not gonna get the wins.
- 48:59You might have all the k's there. I think your ratio, your your
- 49:01your whips, your your ach could be kind of decent, you know,
- 49:07but you're not gonna get much. Fil So he's an interesting back end guy,
- 49:10and I think you're right if they could, if you could end somewhere
- 49:14else, there would be a little bit more excitement here if the wins perspective
- 49:17or uh gonnaybe a better ballpark. So so I'm still I'm like I said,
- 49:22Logan Web is my my comp for Eric Fetti. Wow. Wow,
- 49:29we will put that in stone. And I don't really care for loganway by
- 49:31the way. Oh okay, well that's part of it too. Yeah,
- 49:35but that that ground ball rate does intrigue me a little bit because it does
- 49:39prove that he was doing something different and it will be interesting to maybe to
- 49:44see it in spring training, to see what the arsenal looks like, and
- 49:47especially getting some spin rate data. I'm sure it's actually out there for Korea.
- 49:52I'm sure we can track it down. But if it's looking like it
- 49:57is nasty stuff, then maybe are we thinking about it a little bit more.
- 50:00But I just I have no faith in the sucks. That's yeah,
- 50:07I think that might be the understatements. I think we can all align.
- 50:10There been a rough week as Jerry's been threatening to move to Nashville again,
- 50:15so it uh would be a bummer, mostly because I'd have to go to
- 50:20Cubs games. Then I'm sorry, Yeah, okay, Well that will wrap
- 50:25up like our beginning section here. I know. I guess I should have
- 50:28opened with stating that we were flipping the format a little bit in terms of
- 50:31going through some news and some fantasy analysis, and we'll be back after an
- 50:37upcoming break here with cards information as we got a new release coming down the
- 50:42pike, and they slapped more releases into December. I don't know where all
- 50:46these secret sets are coming up from top slash fanatics, but it looks like
- 50:51we're getting lots of Christmas goodies. But before we get to this break,
- 50:55I want to remind everyone we still have the official cards and category merchandise.
- 51:00We've got shirts and mugs up right now, and we should have some hats
- 51:05back up there pretty soon. That we've been working on refining the designs and
- 51:09getting them off to the printers. So I'll give the link in the show
- 51:15notes because I'm too cheap to still pay for like a domain name for it.
- 51:19But once we make some sales, I'll get a real domain name.
- 51:22It's on spring dot com and you can click in the show notes to be
- 51:27able to, you know, get to your gear brew. What are you
- 51:30looking forward to buying from from the store here pretty soon? Well? I
- 51:35need the hat definitely. I'm I'm a hat guy. I need my hat.
- 51:39And I will throw this out there if I see anybody out in the
- 51:43wild at like a card show wearing you know, our cards and categories merch
- 51:49I got free cards for you anywhere else, free fantasy advice. Value it
- 51:54for what it is. But yeah, I definitely, definitely, uh,
- 52:00you need to grab myself a hat, probably one for my kids too.
- 52:05I don't know that they would appreciate it as much as I will. But
- 52:08that's that's okay. How about you? What what's the what's gonna be the
- 52:12go to for you? The mug. I'm looking forward to the mug.
- 52:15It's going to be great with that morning cup of coffee and the design is
- 52:21going to be plastered dry on. It's gonna be a really fun moment when
- 52:23I drink a mug with coffee that has the logo of my own podcast on
- 52:29it. Might I might have to update the avatar over on Rasball after four
- 52:34years now. Uh might have to the hat, the mug, and the
- 52:37shirt all in one avatar. Yeah, maybe I got the beard going too,
- 52:44so let's just combine at all. Clearly I would not be in New
- 52:47York Yankee. Yeah, all right. With that, we will end this
- 52:53segment and we will be back after the break covering some cad some cards.
- 52:59I'm not used to this switch up, so we're covering cards after the break.
- 53:01We'll see you after that. All right, Welcome back, everybody to
- 53:23the cards section of this episode of Cards and Categories. We're going to be
- 53:29overviewing the release of twenty twenty three Tops Inception this week, which is dropping
- 53:34today on December sixth, so it should be available at your local hobby shops,
- 53:40and they were on tops dot com up until a couple hours ago,
- 53:45but I haven't checked again. We're kind of recording this on the evening of
- 53:49the sixth, so they might still be hanging around. Because this is another
- 53:53one of those sets brew that we thought was dead that at the beginning of
- 53:58the year, Top slash Fanatics was going through and looking at some of the
- 54:02releases that come out during the year and determining sets that maybe weren't as profitable
- 54:08or not as popular, just you know, trying to trim down the amount
- 54:13of printing out there and what they're running through the lines. That Inception was
- 54:17on that block along with Stadium Club and it's back now. So usually Inception
- 54:22comes out early summer, late spring, so yeah, late late spring usually,
- 54:28Yeah, So it's rare for it to be out at this point in
- 54:31time. And I think it's also a good gift box to give to a
- 54:37card collector because as we've reviewed with Tier one, it's a box that only
- 54:45has seven cards within it, this Tops in section box, and it retails
- 54:49for one hundred and fifty dollars at tops dot com, and so you're spending
- 54:53just over twenty bucks a card, but it's a pretty nice price point compared
- 54:58to where some of the emitated boxes are so brew. What has your experience
- 55:05been with opening Tops Interception in the past and what do you think about it
- 55:08being kind of that entry point to the next tier up for collectors. Yeah,
- 55:15I think it's actually a fantastic entry point. I have myself ripped Tops
- 55:20Inception before. I will say I was not terribly successful with my rips because
- 55:27it is to your point that like lower level of the high end products is
- 55:31just starting to get into those, and so it is a little bit more
- 55:35feast or famine as far as a rip goes. I think each each box
- 55:39gives you a whole seven cards per box, one guarantee auto, two parallels
- 55:45and base cards. These are all the very thick card stock, and you
- 55:51know, there's just a number of awesome patches and things like that, and
- 55:57so even if you're not hitting you know, big names, especially earlier when
- 56:01you're ripping those, the relics look fantastic. Relic my underselling patch is more
- 56:07of a better term for them. And they have booklets, they have you
- 56:14know, these crazy patch autos. There's all kinds of cool stuff in there.
- 56:19But this is a rip to kind of savor. You got to take
- 56:22your time because you're not going to get a whole lot. But at the
- 56:24one hundred and fifty dollars price point, it is like it's it's it's a
- 56:30risk that you can take and feel like, Okay, I'll get you know,
- 56:32even if I don't do incredibly well here, I've got three relics.
- 56:37I've got or two relics, I've got one auto. I can probably you
- 56:42know, flip those to somebody else and you know, get you know,
- 56:46half of what I did back, maybe a third, but it was but
- 56:51the opportunity to rip it, I think is great. So I really like
- 56:54tops Inception. I have not bought tops Inception right now because I just bought
- 56:59a large number of TOPSCRM blasters to do a little MVP buyback hunting. So
- 57:06I need to get that in before I commit to any tops Inception. Checking
- 57:10me in a week if I withheld that stance. But yeah, I like
- 57:15the product. It is fun to see. How about you. Have you
- 57:20ripped tops Inception before? Yes, I did in twenty twenty one, I
- 57:25think was when I was trying to chase some Dylan Carlson cards, and that's
- 57:32the only time I've ripped it. It is nice compared to what I see
- 57:37from people opening some you know, things like Tier one and other products that
- 57:45might have the limited number of cards in the box. That inception is fun
- 57:52because they're all the thick cards and I like the design on them too.
- 57:54They're back again with the abstract design with it's kind of like swirls are like
- 58:00marble looking in the background, which this year they've committed a little bit more
- 58:05to a paint look that it feels like the past couple of years they're starting
- 58:08to trend into like ninety solo cup territory. So it's glad to see them
- 58:14reel it back in and kind of put some class into it. And like
- 58:19you said, the actual hits within the product are very satisfying in terms of
- 58:25very large patches on any of the relics that you're hitting, and if you
- 58:30are lucky enough to get a patch book, the patch books look really great,
- 58:35which is you know, multiple cards that can fold open, and the
- 58:40signatures the autos on these cards really pop against the abstract background and they're really
- 58:47even though there's a lot going on with that abstract background. What it actually
- 58:51provides is the ability for TOPS to make these cards without like much of a
- 58:55border or like much of you know, information on it. So when you
- 59:00get a signature on the middle of the card, it just really pops on
- 59:05these cards. So I really like them for that, and they're also great
- 59:09for color matches that we'll link to it in the show notes with the checklist
- 59:15on Beckett dot com. But Beckett dot com, like the main card that
- 59:19they're showing is the Adlie Retchman and I'm actually not sure if that's the orange.
- 59:24I think that might just be the base, but the Orange, I'm
- 59:29sure, and an Adlie Reuschman looks great. So these become really popular cards
- 59:31for getting those team color matches. But the other thing that we're going to
- 59:37be chasing this year in TOPS Inception, kind of like what happened with TOPS
- 59:40Chrome Update this year, is there's special cards with in terms of the Memorbilia
- 59:45cards that TOPS Chrome Update if you recall had those pro debut patches where they
- 59:52were worn on field. Just one of One's people have been hitting them and
- 59:57listening to them on eBay. They've been going for all sorts of bananas,
- 1:00:00prices even for the most obscure rookies that tops Inception what they're going to have
- 1:00:06this year are called first Milestone cards. So these are authenticated cards with the
- 1:00:13MLB Authenticated sticker on them that links to a player's milestone during that game.
- 1:00:19So you know, an example is like a Masataka Yoshida card with a game
- 1:00:25that he hit a you know, a double in or hit a home run
- 1:00:29in. They have the jersey that they've put into this tops Inception card and
- 1:00:34they've authenticated that. So that's a really big boost, I think to the
- 1:00:37product this year because tops Inception typically the relics and jerseys are just player worn,
- 1:00:44they're not even usually game use, and so it really provides that extra
- 1:00:49layer of having a really great, authentic auto that was worn on field.
- 1:00:54So Brew like, what do you think of this? Do you think it's
- 1:00:59a gimmick or do you think it is a nice little twist here for Inception
- 1:01:02this year. Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna throw one correction at you because
- 1:01:06unless I misheard you, but I think you said jersey, but they're actually
- 1:01:08base basis, yes, and I didn't. Yeah, So they are all
- 1:01:14bases from their game they recorded their first hit and what I actually like about
- 1:01:19that and seeing some of the pictures of them. I'm not sure if they're
- 1:01:22all gonna be this way, but there's something about the game used aspect that
- 1:01:27when you get that jersey that has like the little stain on it or a
- 1:01:30little dirt, like basses in general get really dirty during the Major league game,
- 1:01:36and so they even have like that dirt patina type look on them.
- 1:01:40They all have the actual sticker with the you know, authentication, uh that
- 1:01:46you can look up the date and everything like that, which base was,
- 1:01:51all those kinds of things, and so I actually really like them. I
- 1:01:53have to think those cards are incredibly thick to have a piece of a bass
- 1:01:58in there, I know, I don't know if maybe they shaved them really
- 1:02:00really really thin. Also feels like definitely a risk for the border of the
- 1:02:07patch getting damaged because bases generally are slightly rounded, and so you're gonna have
- 1:02:15a little bit of relief within some of those. But I think it's a
- 1:02:17really cool idea I have to give. Whether it's fantics fanatics buying tops or
- 1:02:22tops doing this on their own, like thinking outside the box and like planning
- 1:02:29ahead and keeping this type of thing under wraps and then kind of releasing it
- 1:02:34and making it slightly more accessible than the debut patches because you know you're gonna
- 1:02:40get these. I can't remember what they go up to. If it's like
- 1:02:45out of twenty five or so the base the base versions have no more than
- 1:02:50ninety nine, and then they'll come in red twenty five, Orange ten,
- 1:02:54blue five, and then one of one. Yeah, so call it,
- 1:03:00you know, one hundred and fifty hundred and seventy five of each one.
- 1:03:02So it makes it more accessible if you want to get your favorite player than
- 1:03:07the pro debut patch where he's got the one and if you don't get that
- 1:03:10one, you're never going to get it. So I do really like that
- 1:03:15that aspect. And I think the cards are really sharp on card autos because
- 1:03:19Inception tends to be a mixture of on card versus sticker autos, and I
- 1:03:23think most of these are going to be on card autos. Yeah, And
- 1:03:29I guess I should have done better on the reading comprehension before I gave the
- 1:03:31overview of this, because it's not even just a random game. It's from
- 1:03:36the first hit, like the game where the player had their first hit.
- 1:03:40So it's like the pro debut cards where it is tied into that player doing
- 1:03:46something. And I think that's I didn't actually realize that, And I think
- 1:03:50that really elevates it even further that if you're getting something that actually can be
- 1:03:54related to an important moment like that, that it's such a really cool card
- 1:04:01that you know, typically when we see these authenticated cards, they're in products
- 1:04:06like Triple Threads and like, I've got a couple and you type in the
- 1:04:12authenticated info on MLB and it's like always a random spring training game. It's
- 1:04:17always it's never like any sort of consequential game or cool game. So it's
- 1:04:24really almost like having a piece of like Hall of Fame museum level history with
- 1:04:30the card because it links to the player's first career hit during that game.
- 1:04:35Yeah, and it even looks like from the few that I'm seeing out there,
- 1:04:39they're being creative with the parallels. And so the out of ten Milestone
- 1:04:45patches actually have taken the portion of the base that has the MLB logo on
- 1:04:48it, and it's kind of like the NBA logo Man card to a degree,
- 1:04:55and that's in the card is the actual MLB logo of the hitter on
- 1:05:00the base, and so they've really kind of thought through what they're putting out
- 1:05:05as far as that consistency, because every out of ten that I've seen seems
- 1:05:10to have that that aspect of them. Like I said, as you look
- 1:05:13at the cards that are even just posted right now on eBay, they all
- 1:05:17look different. Everyone's got staining, you know, cleat marks on it.
- 1:05:21There's all kinds of things. There's someone that basically look like they're almost pure
- 1:05:27brown because they've just covered in dirt, and so you don't wash your cards
- 1:05:30up. Public service announcement. But it is really really a cool card,
- 1:05:36and I think they're gonna they're gonna fetch a pretty penny. The only one
- 1:05:40I've seen sold so far was out of ninety nine with for one hundred and
- 1:05:43fifty. But you've already got ones up there that are, you know,
- 1:05:47asking five hundred, seven hundred dollars. That's cool. Yeah, all right,
- 1:05:53And we'll link to a few of those in the show notes as well,
- 1:05:56so you can see what we're looking at that you don't have to go
- 1:05:59punch around on eBay yourself. Will make it easy for you. And then
- 1:06:01the other thing I also like about this set is another easy rainbow to chase.
- 1:06:08So if you're looking for small rainbows to chase and putting together all the
- 1:06:14all of the parallels of your favorite player, hopefully you can get the Inception
- 1:06:18one of one, but if you want to get the rest of them,
- 1:06:21it would be a Blue of twenty five, Orange of fifty, Red of
- 1:06:28seventy five, Magenta of ninety nine, Purple of one, fifties unnumbered green
- 1:06:33based parallels, and just the regular base. So that's two four, six,
- 1:06:42seven eight cards including the one of one in the base. So it's
- 1:06:45a pretty small rainbow and just about like the actual eight you know, like
- 1:06:50actually like Roy G. Bibbs style. So that's kind of cool as well.
- 1:06:55That Inception, I think, I know we've been kind of down on
- 1:06:59some sets that have been coming out, but I'm really excited to have Inception
- 1:07:01back. And it did feel like when Tops made the cuts that they were
- 1:07:06trying to cut through like our hearts with just like some of the between Inception
- 1:07:13and Stadium Club going away that it's great to have some of those more fun,
- 1:07:17kind of offbeat sets that I think. Really what I like about Inception
- 1:07:24is that it's about having that physical card and so seeing how detailed it can
- 1:07:30be in terms of the colors and just the designs, it really enhances the
- 1:07:34entire set overall. It's like a classy tops Fire. Yes, I don't
- 1:07:40think anybody's ever called tops Fire classy, but even to your rainbow point,
- 1:07:45like if you look at some of the Patch autos, like you could you
- 1:07:48could easily just say, hey, I want to get all of the standard
- 1:07:53Patch autos, and there's four of them. If you don't go into the
- 1:07:56manufacturer logoo or the uniform buttons or anything like that, you just want the
- 1:08:00Jersey ones. Yeah, so there's some opportunity. I will say, though,
- 1:08:04this does tend to be a product that sells very, very high after
- 1:08:10it comes out, usually in the spring, because it's right when you're coming
- 1:08:14out the big name rookies are coming out. You know, you're investing in
- 1:08:16them and so, and then it can take kind of quite a tumble based
- 1:08:21on their value. I don't know if that means coming out in December,
- 1:08:27if that's going to kind of already be baked into the prices, or you're
- 1:08:31still going to see that significant bump early because there's some folks that just love
- 1:08:35these cards really buy them, and they do tend to i'd say, open
- 1:08:41a little bit slower than other sets, just based on the price point in
- 1:08:44the single box, and so they kind of slowly filter themselves in the marketplace.
- 1:08:48So yeah, I think it's a fun set. Actually, if you
- 1:08:53aren't into this, one makes me think of like Leaf Trinity, if you've
- 1:08:56done those before, it's kind of as Leaf trendity to the knock off the
- 1:09:00Inception and the Inception k not of Fleet trendy. I don't know, but
- 1:09:02I think those are are some really fun cards that you can get into.
- 1:09:08And I've got a number of the Inception cards in my collection. Yeah,
- 1:09:14and I'll be interested to see where the market goes, as you said,
- 1:09:16because the other reason I think it could be a little bit different market for
- 1:09:21Inception this year is that came after Tier one, and so Tier one and
- 1:09:26Inception in terms of also like the quality of the the signatures and the relics
- 1:09:33that are in the products are pretty close, and so usually it's flipped and
- 1:09:40Tier one I think traditionally has seen a little bit of like a lower market
- 1:09:45than what Inceptions heats up to be because of that that people will snag an
- 1:09:49Inception card before Tier one and might not want to go back and get another
- 1:09:54Tier one card of their favorite players. So it could be flipped this year,
- 1:09:57which would also make things interesting. And I mean it could be the
- 1:10:00year that if you've been trying to eye some Inception cards of your favorite players,
- 1:10:04that it could be the year that's you know, the prices are the
- 1:10:10most reasonable. Yep, absolutely so great set. If you want to get
- 1:10:14tried to just you know, play in the high end just a little bit,
- 1:10:17probably the set. I would recommend to try that out, see how
- 1:10:20it feels, and at the end of the day, you're not out too
- 1:10:23bad regardless of the hits. And there's some great names in the set.
- 1:10:27Don't get me wrong, there's always a few duds as far as the relievers
- 1:10:30or your guys that spent a day up on the major league roster. But
- 1:10:34this this year's rookie class was fantastic and so I think that you definitely being
- 1:10:42later in the season, there's a little bit more to that as far as
- 1:10:45being able to pull guys that had a great year. And I think it's
- 1:10:50gonna be one that we probably talked about down the road here is as a
- 1:10:55set that we both collect. Yeah, absolutely all right. In other cards
- 1:11:00news, we actually I hinted at this before the break, is that we
- 1:11:03had lots of stuff added to the schedule that we thought that there would be
- 1:11:09limited releases coming out here over the next month. But on top of Tops
- 1:11:14Inception coming out today on December sixth, they also dropped Tops Chrome Update,
- 1:11:18Sapphire Edition online on Tops dot com, and Bowman Draft is coming out next
- 1:11:25week on the twelfth. After that, we've got another new addition to the
- 1:11:30roster of Tops High, Tops Heritage High Number, So the base set of
- 1:11:35Tops Heritage gets an add on of you know, it's almost like update being
- 1:11:42run, but for Tops Heritage that comes out of the thirteenth. Another high
- 1:11:45end product, Tops Chrome Black, which is one of my favorites. I've
- 1:11:49never ripped it, but I love buying the singles that comes out on twelve
- 1:11:54fifteen, and then ones that we already knew about. In terms of Tops
- 1:11:59Japan Edition coming out in the sixteenth, Penninian National Treasures got pushed back to
- 1:12:03the twenty ninth, and Bowman's still on the roster in May the eighth.
- 1:12:10In twenty twenty fourth, So brew anything out of those upcoming sets that really
- 1:12:15piques your interest. Yeah, I think that. You know, Bowen Draft
- 1:12:18is always an exciting product, but the price point has really gotten up there
- 1:12:23in the in the last few years, so it's a little less accessible,
- 1:12:27but always fun to chase and maybe put together a paper set of that.
- 1:12:30Chrome Black I think is usually a very classy set, even like sometimes you
- 1:12:38talk about what cards, what sets do you want to get the base cards
- 1:12:41out of, like a stadium club. Chrome's always won I went the base
- 1:12:44cards out of, but I would definitely say and Inception is another good example.
- 1:12:48Tier one I think is a good example. But Chrome Black, I
- 1:12:53think is a fantastic example of a car set where you just want the base
- 1:12:58card even sometimes when you talk about the autos and some of the parallels,
- 1:13:01like actually for the base autos in chrome black, just because the the sleek
- 1:13:08black matt look and how those jump it is a lot of those autos are
- 1:13:14encased and a one touch when when you when you get them, so uh,
- 1:13:18for for me personally, that's always a debate of am I going to
- 1:13:24take it out of the one touch and put it into a top loader and
- 1:13:29eventually I do it after like sitting there for six months, uh, seeing
- 1:13:33it sticking out of the box. It doesn't fit with every other card I
- 1:13:36have, but you know, those are all personal issues. So but I
- 1:13:42think you nailed the the the nail right on the head is that Pops chrome
- 1:13:46black. I love it. It's one of my favorite leases. I think
- 1:13:49it might have also been on the chopping block too. But it seems like
- 1:13:54they brought everything. We need to go back and find the list of the
- 1:13:57original chopping blocks. It feels like I almost think, oh, almost everything
- 1:14:00outside of like the opening day, Yeah made it through fire fire and fire
- 1:14:06and fire fire. Yeah. I just just wait. We're gonna have like
- 1:14:11a New Year's Eve release of tops Fire over at Targets. I would actually
- 1:14:15be in on that. I like fire. Oh I buy rip Fire every
- 1:14:17year that was out. Yeah. Well but tops chome black is you nailed
- 1:14:21it with sleek that like it is the matte black. There aren't other cards
- 1:14:29out that like really resemble it. It's really hard to describe because compared to
- 1:14:33other chrome finishes on cards that have a shine to them, this has a
- 1:14:38chrome mat finish, which is it really stands out when you're flipping through your
- 1:14:43own cards, and the color parallels are always spot on, that they are
- 1:14:47always wonderfully done, always look great. That it's a really high end product.
- 1:14:51And yeah, like I said, I've never ripped it, and I'm
- 1:14:55not sure if I ever will, but it's a great one to hunt down
- 1:14:58your favorite players, and if you do rip it, like I think,
- 1:15:00it is one of the probably better because better ones to do so if you're
- 1:15:09playing in that little bit higher end market. Again, because unlike Inception has
- 1:15:14like a lot of like the cool patches and autos, Tops Come Black usually
- 1:15:18has a really good auto list in terms of lots of Hall of Famers,
- 1:15:23lots of stars, lots of rookies, and the duds are a little bit
- 1:15:26fewer and far between, because it is a really limited set and limited product
- 1:15:30that they really wanted to kind of elevate it. So when it first started
- 1:15:34coming out, that's the route they've taken, and they've stuck with it over
- 1:15:38the past few years. Yeah. Absolutely, So it's gonna be a fun,
- 1:15:42fun December with all these releases we weren't quite expecting, so I expect
- 1:15:46a few rundowns of the pod the next few weeks here. Yeah, we'll
- 1:15:50see what else they might add in there for us over the next couple of
- 1:15:55weeks, but we will wrap it up here and like I said, we'll
- 1:15:59be batter again next week. We're going to be back onto the every week's
- 1:16:02schedule and running all winter here as we've got more releases, more moves,
- 1:16:08and maybe we'll have news on where Otani and the soda return have settled for
- 1:16:14next week. So brew can you remind all the people out there where they
- 1:16:17can find you? Yep, find me over on x slash Twitter at j
- 1:16:21Brewer one seven and we'll I'll I'll be picking up here probably in January over

- 1:16:38to getting getting back up and running here to baseball. The hiatus has been
