- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Okay guys, so since we're going to be talking about skincare hygiene, I thought it would be proper to include some brand recommendations that are really, really at the front lines for keeping hygiene in mind.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: So as you all know, I have a deep appreciation for Care Skincare's Missler wipes.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: They are phenomenal.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: I keep them everywhere all the time.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: And the reason is because they're single-use, but biodegradable wipes that can be used for there's a day version and a night version.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: And because they're single use, you know that you're not, you know, reusing the same thing on your skin.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: It's keeping you clean throughout the day.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: If you've got like you know, a city that you live in that's really like um, you know, just a lot of pollution, environmental stressors, that's a great way to just keep your skin nice and clean throughout the day.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: So I highly suggest check out Hair Skincare C-A-R-E, period.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I hope you end up investing in those wipes.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Trust me, it is so worth it.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: And yeah, stay tuned.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Okay guys, so I just wanted to shout out uh Alginus Skincare because I am obsessed with this line.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: I think they are so just innovative, and I know that they have a lot of groundbreaking new things that they've been working on.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: So if you're looking for a really solid line that is uh plant-based, algae-based, um, something that is really sustainable and just really works well, I highly suggest you check out um Alginist and any of their products.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: I'm obsessed with all of their serums, um, all of their creams and everything that they have because, well, you know, going with this episode, I really enjoyed their packaging as well because it's very conducive to really practicing good hygiene in skincare, and also, you know, it's a very science-backed line.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm sure you guys caught the episode I did with their founder and their their CEO, sorry, and um, you know, it just it really goes to show that you know some skincare lines do go the extra mile to make sure that their consumers are getting the best possible products in the best possible packaging so that they can really you know properly practice skincare hygiene.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: So, again, check out Algenest, great options for gifting um this season, and yeah, stay tuned for this episode.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Hi guys, welcome back for another episode of The Science of Skin.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Today we're gonna be talking about proper skincare hygiene and some of the reasons why we have to make sure that we're being very careful in the way that we're applying our skincare and what we're doing after we apply it and you know other things around that.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: So let's start with the microbiome because I know that everybody is very curious about this topic and it's also very buzzworthy, right?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, we're all you know chatting about it lately, and to be honest, there's not a lot of information out there that really educates the consumer about what is the microbiome in the skin.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: You know, we all have all heard of bacteria that cause acne.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we've all heard of like, you know, for example, QT bacterium, um, which was renamed, and we've all heard of like E.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: coli and Staph aureus and all these organisms, but there's actually a lot more, and um, you know, a lot of those are called gram-negative bacteria.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: So, for example, um enterococi and uh klebsiella and proteus, these are all gram-negative uh rods that are present on the skin.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: And what's important to understand here is that gram-negative bacteria and gram-positive bacteria work in very different ways.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: So, you know, when they actually interact with our skin's barrier, they're going to be doing different things based on their own um surrounding layers.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: So if you were to look at a gram-positive bacterium and then look at a gram-negative, you would notice that the lamellar structure that is surrounding them, um, their cell walls or you know, their cell membranes, and just the way that everything is set up is actually very different.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: And so this these differences, um, without going into like too much detail, these differences are actually responsible for how that they interact with our skin and any damage that they cause to our skin, you know, including things like inflammation, which can then lead to um, you know, just exacerbated uh, you know, pathologies and then you know, somehow compromising the skin barrier.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: So, you know, when we all know when the skin barrier is compromised, we have certain things that arise, such as acne or contact dermatitis, or you know, even um deeper infections that like cellulitis or folliculitis.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, there's so many areas of the skin that we have to keep in mind, like our sebaceous glands, our follicles, you know, and all of the bacteria that are found in our skin are actually distributed based on the location of our, you know, on the skin.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: So you're not going to find the same bacteria found um in the sebaceous glands that you will find on the very surface of the skin.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Just like you won't find the same bacteria on your face that you would find on maybe your chest or your buttocks or your legs.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: So there are some schematics in the Instagram posts that I created to go along with this um audio commentary.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: So I really urge you guys just take a quick, you know, go to the last slide and take a real, you know, good look at it and just kind of um orient yourself a little bit to understand that bacteria that are found on our skin that make up the microbiome of the skin are extremely, you know, it's a vast uh family of microorganisms.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Now, that being said, uh one of the key things I want to focus on is the use of skincare dispensers and how we're utilizing them and you know what that can really lead to.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: So, for example, a lot of serums, oils, um, you know, makeup primers, lots of liquid-based rubulations come in this dropper vial uh setup as far as packaging goes.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: And I am not gonna lie to you, I'm not a huge fan of that.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: And the biggest reason is because I, you know, I personally don't have a problem because I I know that you know we can't do certain things, but there are a lot of consumers out there that will take a dropper, and I know this was a big trend on Instagram and social media where you would see them put the dropper directly on their face and dispense the product and then put it back into the vial and then dispense some more.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: So, what's happening here is very important to understand.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Things that are usually found in our skincare products are very, very um conducive to bacterial growth.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: So when we grow bacteria in a lab, we call it a medium in which we're growing them.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: And that medium is usually enriched with nutrients that are allowing the bacteria to not only grow but also, you know, just divide and proliferate and just keep multiplying, right?
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Well, a lot of those things are simple ingredients like, you know, common sugars that are found everywhere in our body, on our subsurfaces, lipids, um, you know, growth factors that are commonly found.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Like I said, again, um water, you know, is a big one.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Anything aqueous uh related is a big one.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: So, and it's also important to realize that bacteria can grow in different environments.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: So, for example, certain temperatures and certain uh environmental conditions actually facilitate the growth of bacteria.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: So, our skin, you know, keep in in mind the pH, keeping in mind the temperature of our skin in various places, the moisture levels in various places, these are all things that are very, very important to really uh take heed of because these are all components that contribute to bacterial growth and bacterial colonies um, you know, forming.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: So when you place that dropper back into the vial that you got it from after you've placed it directly on your skin, even if you got like one or two, you know, bacterium um on the actual dropper tip and you put it back in, that's enough to lead to this growth of you know a colony within the vial.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: And you know, you're not always going to see this hazy appearance that we often, you know, correlate with correlate uh, you know, in what do you call it, contaminated products with.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Sometimes, you know, that's not going to be the case.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: So maybe an oil, for example, you know, there might be bacteria that are very predisposed to growing in oils, which we know is very true, that can happen.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: And so you're not gonna see a hazy appearance, that oil.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: It might still look clear, but that doesn't mean that it's clean.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: So this leads me to the next point, which is now you've got this product that is contaminated, you're utilizing it again and again and again, right, on your skin.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: And we all know that we when we put on our skincare, we're leaving it on there for a few hours at least, right?
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Well, those few hours um are really, you know, contributing to this mechanism that the bacteria have to not only be on the skin's surface, but to invade and to be aggressive towards the skin barrier and break it down.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: And so we're we can, you know, uh this commonly leads to things that cause barrier damage, and then the things that I mentioned previously, like acne and you know, um just things that lead to the breakdown of the skin barrier, leading to these bacteria leaking into the um deeper layers of the skin, activating other um cytokines and you know, immune regulatory factors that are going to cause more irritation, more inflammation in the area.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: So you're gonna see things like rashes, you're gonna see redness, you're gonna see um sensitivity, you know, um also it will predispose you to UV damage because if you have a damaged skin barrier, obviously UV light is going to be a lot harsher on your skin.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: So these are all things that we really have to keep in mind.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Also, another thing I really want to clarify is that we should not be sharing our skincare.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: If you have a skincare um product that you really, really love, I highly suggest, you know, maybe dispense it without obviously touching the tip of the dispenser into a sterile vial for your friend to try, you know, if you really want to give them a sample.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: But don't give them your actual, you know, container of skincare because if they do the same thing and they put that you know dropper on their skin, now you're cross-contaminating.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: And so this leads to a whole different slew of problems because we all have a very distinct microbiome, and then you know, contrary to belief, uh, you know, it's not the same.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: So although we have a lot of schematics that illustrate like um, you know, common bacteria that are found throughout, like, you know, it's it's kind of universally uh there, the common bacteria that are universally found on our skin, it doesn't mean that all of them are being accounted for in these schematics.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: So there are differences based on the person um and what microbiota are on their skin.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: A lot of these things are impacted by, for example, if you've gone to a dermatologist before and you've been put on antibiotics like doxycycline, that can lead to um a difference in the microbiota that will be on your skin versus somebody else's.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Um it can also um, you know, a big thing is, for example, drug uh resistance that a lot of bacteria develop because of the use of antibiotics in dermal health and um, you know, just common dermatology treatments that are offered to patients.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: So a lot of factors are coming in here, and those uh drug-resistant bacteria could be on one person's skin surface and then not another person's.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: So this is you know, this it's a multi-layered problem.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: So my real genuine suggestion here is be careful how you dispense your skincare.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: The best way to do it is to take the dropper, you know, take out as much as you want in the dropper, and then just you know drop it onto your palm, the palm of your hand, without touching any skin.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: That way you're just you know, you're easily uh dispensing the product, you're getting the amount you want, rub it between your hands.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: I'll obviously make sure your hands are clean, you know.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: You wash your hands with an antibacterial uh soap beforehand, and then apply it onto your skin.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Simple.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Um, that is, in my opinion, the best way to do it.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: I think that, you know, there's a lot of things we can do.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: We don't need to be paranoid or anything.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: That's not why I made this post, but I just wanted to remind everybody that you know proper skin hygiene is a real factor when it comes to adequate skincare routines, and it's also very helpful for your dermatologist because if you're able to tell them that, you know, I really do practice good skincare hygiene and I make sure that my hands are clean, I make sure that I don't touch my um dispensers onto my skin surface and my products are not contaminated.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: This really helps them because it it helps them rule out um problems that you know they really have to rule out before they assess your skin and and what could really be the problem.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I just want everybody to keep in mind we want to do everything we can to avoid inflammation in our skin.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: A big reason inflammation occurs is bacterial, and we want to avoid the overgrowth of those bacteria on our skin surface.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: So I hope you enjoyed this little episode and definitely check out the slides that I put up on Instagram.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: I think they go really hand in hand with this commentary, and I would love to hear your feedback, any questions that you might have for me.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: I'm happy to answer anyone's questions.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: I will definitely give you a real resource if I do answer any questions and cite it for you.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: So please feel free, send me an audio message through the Anchor app or wherever.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: Um, and just, you know, just keep connected and keep this conversation going.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Maybe tell your friend or somebody you know um who does this, you know, just to get views on TikTok or views on Instagram.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: You know, I know that's why a lot of influencers do this.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: I know there were uh, for example, certain serums and uh, you know, uh, what do you call it, face primers that were being used.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna name any names here, but a lot of people were like, you know, putting them directly onto their skin and like it was just, oh my gosh, so cringeworthy because I'm looking at it and I'm like, oh my god, you're going to cause so many problems.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: So, you know, again, I don't want to rant, but I just want to say I want everybody to be safe out there.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, especially with the winter months coming up, they can be a lot harsher on your skin in terms of the weather and the temperature, and the skin can get drier, so it's more prone to like you know, breakage and and cracking and you know, all these things that are already disrupting our barrier.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: So, why add to that with you know things like poor skincare hygiene, right?
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: So that's my message.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: I hope you guys enjoyed this little episode and stay tuned for a lot more to come.
