- 0:00Speaker 1: Anyway, it was a week ago and it was my
- 0:04Speaker 1: niece's twenty first birthday, and we said to her, let's
- 0:11Speaker 1: take you and your brother out for dinner. Nice place,
- 0:15Speaker 1: have your first legal cocktail. Who am I kidding? Your
- 0:20Speaker 1: first legal cocktail. It's all right, terrific. So we made
- 0:25Speaker 1: reservations over here for the rest, which which people still
- 0:30Speaker 1: don't know about.
- 0:30Speaker 2: The rest. There's like a little bodega, well.
- 0:36Speaker 1: It used to be, and they had to sign up
- 0:37Speaker 1: that said bodega, and they would actually sell gum and
- 0:40Speaker 1: things like that. You know, it was an actual bodega.
- 0:42Speaker 1: But then downstairs from the place is a secret restaurant's
- 0:46Speaker 1: kind of like a little speakeasy, but they've just given
- 0:49Speaker 1: up on the whole bodega front. It's just a little
- 0:51Speaker 1: bar there now. And you go downstairs for the dinner.
- 0:55Speaker 1: So we went down and we had a nice dinner,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and I said, all right, your first legal cocktail, and
- 1:03Speaker 1: she said, I like all lives mm hm, So I
- 1:07Speaker 1: think I should try a dirty martini, okay, which to
- 1:11Speaker 1: which I said, are you sure you want to start there?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty it's pretty advanced.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Are you sure about that?
- 1:17Speaker 2: Okay? Fine? It sure?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Your your nights, you do it.
- 1:21Speaker 3: What was she pretending like, It's like, oh, I've never
- 1:24Speaker 3: had alcohol before.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Yeah, she was doing her best, but she said she
- 1:29Speaker 1: never had a dirty martini. And I'm like, okay, great, Yeah,
- 1:31Speaker 1: it's a good place if you know. It's a great
- 1:33Speaker 1: bar down there, so let's have it all right, And
- 1:35Speaker 1: she comes out and it's ew ew ew ew. Yeah,
- 1:38Speaker 1: you don't want to start with a dirty martini. So
- 1:40Speaker 1: we we talked her into a into a white Russian
- 1:45Speaker 1: and some other drinks, you know, which she quite enjoyed.
- 1:48Speaker 2: You know, that was great.
- 1:50Speaker 1: So as we're leaving the rest, I realized that now
- 1:55Speaker 1: she's experienced legally this nice place, we should do the
- 2:00Speaker 1: opposite now and take her to a bad place. Well
- 2:05Speaker 1: it's your definition a crappy place. No, I would never
- 2:08Speaker 1: call it that. A place that is not like the
- 2:12Speaker 1: place that we were in.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It was not fancy. Yeah, there you go.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So just a block, you know, just two doors up
- 2:20Speaker 1: is cheers to you.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's what I think. Do they have karaoke there?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Yes, they were setting up karaoke.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I think my kid goes there every Saturday night and
- 2:32Speaker 2: does karaoke there.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I think, so, yeah, they were setting.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Up for karaoke while we were there's. Yeah, that's where
- 2:37Speaker 2: he goes.
- 2:38Speaker 1: But here's the thing about cheers to you. Place hasn't
- 2:41Speaker 1: changed in all the years, has not changed, and they're
- 2:46Speaker 1: still only charging fifty cents to play pool.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Really two quarters.
- 2:52Speaker 1: You never see that, Todd, You never see that anymore.
- 2:55Speaker 3: In this world of inflation. Yes, I'm appreciative of theirforts
- 3:00Speaker 3: to hang on to their heritage.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Now here's the Here's the strange thing is that a
- 3:06Speaker 1: lot of bars in town, a lot of you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: various different bars. What was your first bar? Because it
- 3:13Speaker 1: turns out that my wife's first bar and my nephew's
- 3:17Speaker 1: first bar were the same bar. Ex wife's place, they
- 3:22Speaker 1: both really that was their first place.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Which is which is going to come down here eventually?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Is it? Yeather tearing? They're tearing that whole thing down.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That's too much primary real estate there. It's that old
- 3:33Speaker 2: church right there on the corner. And it was right
- 3:36Speaker 2: next to the old X ninety six study. My ex
- 3:39Speaker 2: wife's place is was actually part of the church. It
- 3:43Speaker 2: was where the pastor lived when the church that was
- 3:45Speaker 2: an operational church. And uh, yeah, they're they're going to
- 3:49Speaker 2: tear all that down, and.
- 3:50Speaker 1: So it turned out that that was their first bar,
- 3:53Speaker 1: both of them ex Wife's place, and then we got
- 3:55Speaker 1: talking to some people and they went, yeah, that was
- 3:57Speaker 1: my first bar. What is it about ex wife's place
- 3:59Speaker 1: that may I don't know everybody's first bar.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I want to know what my first bar and cocktail was,
- 4:06Speaker 3: please it was. I don't obviously don't remember the name
- 4:09Speaker 3: of the place. We were in London broadcasting our shows
- 4:11Speaker 3: from KJQ, and Biff Raff bought me a strawberry dackery.
- 4:16Speaker 2: It was really good.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Because I'm like, you know, I'm like, mister, I'm scared
- 4:22Speaker 3: of alcohol, right, okay ye, and I'm like, I need
- 4:25Speaker 3: something that's gonna taste like a slurpy was my description.
- 4:28Speaker 3: He's like, well, well, that's just a dackery. I think
- 4:30Speaker 3: my first bar was. It was really sweet and gave
- 4:32Speaker 3: me a tummy ache.
- 4:33Speaker 2: When I was twenty one, I went to a bar
- 4:36Speaker 2: in Ogden and I think it was where this is
- 4:40Speaker 2: kind of weird. So it's the old Ben Loman Hotel,
- 4:43Speaker 2: which is now I don't remember what it's called now. Anyway,
- 4:47Speaker 2: it's on the corner of twenty fifth in Washington and
- 4:50Speaker 2: there's there was right on the front of it there
- 4:54Speaker 2: was a nightclub called the Empire Room, and it was
- 4:57Speaker 2: like a real old fashioned n club, you know, with
- 5:01Speaker 2: big booths, and it was all red inside. And and I
- 5:05Speaker 2: think that's the first bar I ever went into legally.
- 5:09Speaker 2: And it is now a restaurant run by my sister
- 5:13Speaker 2: that space, that same space, that's where she moved her
- 5:17Speaker 2: two Bit Street Cafe restaurant in that same space. And
- 5:21Speaker 2: I went, I went there and had some lunch, and
- 5:23Speaker 2: it was weird to walk in there. I mean it was.
- 5:27Speaker 2: It was in certain ways the same, and it's a
- 5:30Speaker 2: it's a beautiful place, and it's a great space.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Well, and then of course I have to tell everybody
- 5:35Speaker 1: we used to go to bar X back in the
- 5:38Speaker 1: old days.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But it was just a hole. It was a dive.
- 5:41Speaker 1: It was a real hole. And then of course it
- 5:44Speaker 1: got bought by the Carolyn those guys, and they made
- 5:51Speaker 1: it into a fancy place. But they kept because I
- 5:54Speaker 1: told them to quote to quote Carl of the Simpsons,
- 5:59Speaker 1: but the dank, Oh, you can't get rid of the day.
- 6:03Speaker 1: But they said, you're going to keep something from the
- 6:05Speaker 1: old place. This is yes, we're going to keep the
- 6:07Speaker 1: wagon wheel lights that are above the bar.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, and they did, they kept those. Of course,
- 6:13Speaker 2: the Twilight Lounge that I've I've spent some time in
- 6:18Speaker 2: the Twilight Lounge, am I. Oh and then what was
- 6:20Speaker 2: the place on Johnny Oh? Geeze Farron used to go
- 6:28Speaker 2: there all the time. Thud, you know, yeah where it's
- 6:34Speaker 2: not Johnny's. I don't know, I can't think of the name.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Well, maybe that's an ex bowl for next week.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Write this down.
- 6:41Speaker 1: What was your first legal bar experience, Well, you know.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Of course the Bongo Lounge up there on that's a
- 6:50Speaker 2: that's a good place. Lou Monaco's in Roy Pegs Moncos.
- 6:56Speaker 2: If you if you can't stop in, blow us a
- 6:58Speaker 2: kid in a
