- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine fifty eight. Today,
- 0:08Speaker 1: The Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the Gospel
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Luke as we start to wrap this up with
- 0:15Speaker 1: chapter twenty two. Welcome to the Bible Study Podcast. I'm
- 0:26Speaker 1: your host, Chris Kristensen. We're getting to Monday, Thursday, the
- 0:30Speaker 1: day before Good Friday today in the study. But first
- 0:34Speaker 1: a word from this sponsor. So in this particular chapter today,
- 0:40Speaker 1: we're going to do both the Thursday before Good Friday
- 0:44Speaker 1: and then also the beginning of Good Friday, the early
- 0:49Speaker 1: morning hours of Good Friday. I don't think we're going
- 0:50Speaker 1: to get to the latter today, but let's see how
- 0:53Speaker 1: it goes. Judas agrees to betray Jesus. Now, the feast
- 0:58Speaker 1: of unleavened bread called the Past was approaching, and the
- 1:01Speaker 1: chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking
- 1:03Speaker 1: for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they
- 1:06Speaker 1: were afraid of the people. Then Satan entered Judas called Escariot,
- 1:10Speaker 1: one of the Twelve, and Judas went to the chief
- 1:13Speaker 1: priests and the officers of the Temple guard and discussed
- 1:16Speaker 1: with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted
- 1:20Speaker 1: and agreed to give him money. He consented and watched
- 1:23Speaker 1: for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when
- 1:26Speaker 1: no crowd was present. Now, this is obviously a significant
- 1:31Speaker 1: verse in this story here in Holy Week, the Betrayal
- 1:37Speaker 1: of Judas. Unfortunately, it's a story that doesn't tell us
- 1:42Speaker 1: any of Judas's motivations. It does say that he's going
- 1:46Speaker 1: to take money for doing this, and we do have
- 1:49Speaker 1: elsewhere in scriptures in the New Testament that Judas was
- 1:53Speaker 1: the one who kept the money for the disciples and
- 1:57Speaker 1: sometimes skimmed from it. And so we know that Judas
- 2:01Speaker 1: has a problem with money. But I don't think that's
- 2:05Speaker 1: just it. I don't think that you become a disciple
- 2:08Speaker 1: of Jesus and you follow him around for three years
- 2:13Speaker 1: just because you're trying to get money. It seems like
- 2:16Speaker 1: there's likely something else going on, but we are never
- 2:20Speaker 1: told in scripture what it is. The only other hint
- 2:24Speaker 1: we'll have is that Judas will try and give that
- 2:27Speaker 1: money back later on when he realizes he has turned
- 2:31Speaker 1: over an innocent man. And so the speculation among some
- 2:35Speaker 1: scholars is that Judas was trying to force Jesus hand
- 2:40Speaker 1: to do something and was using this mechanism. I don't
- 2:44Speaker 1: know if that's the case, and no one does except
- 2:47Speaker 1: for Judas and God. But we start here with this
- 2:53Speaker 1: setting up here of Good Friday, with Judas's betrayal, and
- 2:58Speaker 1: then we get the last sup Then came the day
- 3:02Speaker 1: of unleavened bread, on which the passover Lamb had to
- 3:05Speaker 1: be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, go and
- 3:08Speaker 1: make preparations for us to eat the passover. Where do
- 3:12Speaker 1: you want us to prepare for it, they asked. He replied,
- 3:15Speaker 1: as you enter the city, a man carrying a jar
- 3:18Speaker 1: of water will meet you. Follow him to the house
- 3:20Speaker 1: that he enters, and say to the owner of the
- 3:22Speaker 1: house the teacher asks, where is the guest room where
- 3:26Speaker 1: I may eat the Passover with my disciples. He will
- 3:29Speaker 1: show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.
- 3:35Speaker 1: They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.
- 3:38Speaker 1: So they prepared the passover. When the hour came, Jesus
- 3:41Speaker 1: and his apostles reclined at the table, and he said
- 3:45Speaker 1: to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this passover
- 3:48Speaker 1: with you before I suffer, For I tell you, I
- 3:51Speaker 1: will not eat again until it finds fulfillment in the
- 3:55Speaker 1: Kingdom of God. After taking the cup, he gave thanks
- 3:58Speaker 1: and said, take this and divided among you, For I
- 4:02Speaker 1: tell you I will not drink again from the fruit
- 4:04Speaker 1: of the vine until the Kingdom of God comes. And
- 4:08Speaker 1: he took the bread, gave thanks, and broke it and
- 4:10Speaker 1: gave it to them, saying, this is my body given
- 4:13Speaker 1: for you do this in remembrance of me. In the
- 4:17Speaker 1: same way, after the supper, he took the cup, saying,
- 4:20Speaker 1: this cup is the new covenant in my blood, which
- 4:23Speaker 1: is poured out for you. But the hand of him
- 4:26Speaker 1: who is going to betray me is with mine on
- 4:30Speaker 1: the table. The son of man will go as it
- 4:33Speaker 1: has been decreed, But woe to the man who betrays him.
- 4:37Speaker 1: They began to question among themselves which of them it
- 4:40Speaker 1: might be who would do this. So we are eating
- 4:47Speaker 1: a satyr meal, a passover meal. And just as on
- 4:53Speaker 1: aside here I happen to be studying through finishing up,
- 4:57Speaker 1: just finished up in my personal devotions, the study of
- 4:59Speaker 1: Second chronic And one of the things you come across
- 5:01Speaker 1: in second Chronicles is how seldom the people of Israel
- 5:06Speaker 1: actually ate the Passover meal, and how seldom they they
- 5:11Speaker 1: celebrated it, because they kept turning away from God and
- 5:16Speaker 1: over to other gods under certain kings. And then they
- 5:19Speaker 1: come back under Hezekiah and then under Josiah the Reformer,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and they eat a Passover meal, and it says things
- 5:27Speaker 1: like and never had this been done again really in
- 5:30Speaker 1: this fashion since the days of David. So during the
- 5:34Speaker 1: five hundred years or so of the time of the kings,
- 5:38Speaker 1: it was actually more rare than not to eat the
- 5:41Speaker 1: Passover meal to celebrate the Passover, which is interesting because
- 5:45Speaker 1: if you have friends who are Jewish, they are still
- 5:47Speaker 1: having Satan meals today. And there is a consistency of
- 5:51Speaker 1: celebrating the Passover that really comes back to when the
- 5:55Speaker 1: people get back from the Babylonian captivity, and when they
- 6:00Speaker 1: come back in roughly three hundred's AD. Then since that
- 6:05Speaker 1: time they have been more consistently faithful with remembering the Passover.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And so Jesus wants to eat the Passover with his disciples,
- 6:16Speaker 1: with his apostles, with just the smaller group, because his
- 6:19Speaker 1: large his disciples is a larger group by this time,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and he apparently has done some preparation or God has
- 6:28Speaker 1: done some miraculous preparation. We don't really know, but he
- 6:30Speaker 1: basically sends them into the town but doesn't say just
- 6:34Speaker 1: go to Bob's house and he's got a room and
- 6:37Speaker 1: it's already But he sends them in this funny thing
- 6:40Speaker 1: of you'll see somebody carrying a jar of water, follow them,
- 6:44Speaker 1: and you know they will take you to the house.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So it almost sounds more like there's something miraculous going
- 6:51Speaker 1: on here where the preparations have been prepared, not with Jesus,
- 6:57Speaker 1: you know, going off on the side and saying, hey, Bob,
- 6:59Speaker 1: why don't you have a place where we can do
- 7:01Speaker 1: the passover? And we don't know, but this is an
- 7:05Speaker 1: important meal here, because this is tying the Old and
- 7:10Speaker 1: the New Testament together. And this is one of the
- 7:12Speaker 1: reasons I wanted to spend more time on this section
- 7:16Speaker 1: today rather than trying to get through this whole chapter.
- 7:20Speaker 1: So you may remember that the passover meal was eaten
- 7:23Speaker 1: first in Exodus. We'll eat this meal, we'll be ready
- 7:27Speaker 1: to go. We'll eat it with our staff on our
- 7:29Speaker 1: hands and our sandals on our feet, ready to leave Egypt,
- 7:34Speaker 1: because God is going to pass over this house where
- 7:38Speaker 1: we have taken the blood of this lamb and put
- 7:41Speaker 1: it on the door frame, on the lintel of the door,
- 7:45Speaker 1: so that they will know that this is a house
- 7:48Speaker 1: of the people of Israel, one of the Hebrews, and
- 7:51Speaker 1: the Angel of God will pass over this house and
- 7:55Speaker 1: no one in it will die. Right it's going to
- 7:58Speaker 1: when the Angel of God gets to the house of
- 8:01Speaker 1: the Egyptians without the door on the lintel, then the eldest,
- 8:07Speaker 1: the firstborn male will die. This is the last of
- 8:11Speaker 1: the great ten plagues in Exodus, and it is the
- 8:15Speaker 1: one that finally breaks the will of Pharaoh, so Pharaoh
- 8:18Speaker 1: lets the people go. So this is one of the
- 8:22Speaker 1: most significant things that is going to happen in the
- 8:25Speaker 1: Old Testament for forming who the people of Israel are.
- 8:31Speaker 1: And if you go to a satarmeal, and if you've
- 8:32Speaker 1: got Jewish friends, I would encourage you to see if
- 8:35Speaker 1: you can get invited or go to a Christian Satar
- 8:38Speaker 1: meal where they will do the traditional Satar meal with
- 8:41Speaker 1: all of the bitter herbs that will remind them of
- 8:43Speaker 1: their tears that they shed while they are in Egypt,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and you'll eat the mix that will remind you of
- 8:49Speaker 1: the mortar that they use to make bricks well in Egypt,
- 8:53Speaker 1: and all of these things that are traditional Passover elements,
- 8:56Speaker 1: and Jesus and his disciples are doing all of those,
- 8:59Speaker 1: including a number of glasses of wine as is tradition.
- 9:04Speaker 1: The difference is that Jesus starts something different with this meal,
- 9:11Speaker 1: and he says two specific things that make it very
- 9:16Speaker 1: important to us as Christians. One is he takes the
- 9:19Speaker 1: bread and says, this is my body given for you.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Do this in remembrance of me that is new. And
- 9:26Speaker 1: two is he takes the cup and says, this is
- 9:28Speaker 1: the covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Now the thing that ties together Passover, and this Monday Thursday,
- 9:40Speaker 1: this last supper is sacrifice right for in Passover, what
- 9:48Speaker 1: save the people of Israel was faithfulness to what God says,
- 9:52Speaker 1: but also the death of that lamb whose blood is
- 9:56Speaker 1: put on the door so that the Angel will pass over.
- 10:01Speaker 1: What Jesus is saying is there's a new sacrifice coming.
- 10:06Speaker 1: We're about a day away from a new sacrifice, which
- 10:09Speaker 1: is him. His body and his blood now are what
- 10:15Speaker 1: protect us, so that when the Angel of God looks
- 10:20Speaker 1: down on us, it sees that blood rather than what
- 10:23Speaker 1: we have done, and so again we're protected by the
- 10:29Speaker 1: sacrifice that has been made in the Old Testament, the lamb,
- 10:33Speaker 1: and in the New Testament, the Lamb of God given
- 10:36Speaker 1: once for all, the final perfect sacrifice, the Lamb being
- 10:43Speaker 1: just a shadow of what will come in Jesus. And
- 10:49Speaker 1: so everything was going pretty normal at this passover meal
- 10:55Speaker 1: in Luke's account, until Jesus starts to say these new
- 10:59Speaker 1: words words, and then, as if that weren't enough, he
- 11:04Speaker 1: interrupts the meal and says, by the way, someone who's
- 11:07Speaker 1: going to betray me as sitting down with us. And
- 11:10Speaker 1: you can believe that that is going to lead to
- 11:12Speaker 1: some discussion, and they're questioning among each other who might
- 11:15Speaker 1: do it. But that is not the only thing they
- 11:17Speaker 1: are questioning, it continues, and says, a dispute also rows
- 11:21Speaker 1: among those as to which of them would be considered
- 11:25Speaker 1: to be the greatest. Jesus said to them, the kings
- 11:28Speaker 1: of the gentiles lord it over them, and those who
- 11:31Speaker 1: exercise authority over them call themselves benefactors. But you are
- 11:35Speaker 1: not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you
- 11:38Speaker 1: should be like the youngest, and the one who rules
- 11:41Speaker 1: like the one who serves For who is greater the
- 11:44Speaker 1: one who is at the table or the one who serves.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Is it not the one who is at the table.
- 11:50Speaker 1: But I am among you as one who serves. You
- 11:53Speaker 1: are those who have stood by me in my trials.
- 11:57Speaker 1: And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my
- 12:00Speaker 1: father conferred one on me, so that you may eat
- 12:04Speaker 1: and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit
- 12:07Speaker 1: on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. So this
- 12:12Speaker 1: is not the only place in the Bible where the
- 12:15Speaker 1: disciples get a little full of themselves and start arguing
- 12:18Speaker 1: about who is the number one, who's Jesus' favorite, And
- 12:22Speaker 1: it doesn't go over well, and he's saying, this is
- 12:25Speaker 1: not the kind of leaders I want you to be.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I want you to be servant leaders, people who lead
- 12:35Speaker 1: through service, not through authority, not through lording it over people,
- 12:42Speaker 1: but who lead by doing, who lead by serving and
- 12:48Speaker 1: through humility. And this is important because again we're here
- 12:53Speaker 1: in the Thursday before Good Friday, and Jesus isn't going
- 12:56Speaker 1: to be around for very long, and these will be
- 12:59Speaker 1: the leaders of the church that he is starting. Simon
- 13:04Speaker 1: Simon Satan has asked to sift you all like wheat.
- 13:07Speaker 1: But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith
- 13:10Speaker 1: may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen
- 13:13Speaker 1: your brothers. But he replied, Lord, I am ready to
- 13:17Speaker 1: go with you to prison and to death. Jesus answered,
- 13:20Speaker 1: I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you
- 13:23Speaker 1: will deny three times that you know me. We get
- 13:27Speaker 1: this version of the story that will be in multiple
- 13:30Speaker 1: gospels of Peter, who is sure that he will stand
- 13:34Speaker 1: by Jesus, and Jesus saying, you will not this day.
- 13:39Speaker 1: You will deny me. You'll deny that you know me.
- 13:45Speaker 1: But he also says, when you have turned back, strengthen
- 13:50Speaker 1: your brothers. When you have come back from this setback
- 13:53Speaker 1: you are about to have, then lead, then strengthen your brothers.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Be a source of strength for those around you. Then
- 14:03Speaker 1: Jesus asked them, when I sent you without a purse,
- 14:05Speaker 1: bag or sandals, did you lack anything? Nothing? They answered,
- 14:09Speaker 1: He said to them, but now if you have a purse,
- 14:11Speaker 1: take it and a bag, and also a bag. And
- 14:14Speaker 1: if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and
- 14:16Speaker 1: buy one. It is written, and he was numbered with
- 14:20Speaker 1: the transgressors. And I tell you that this must be
- 14:23Speaker 1: fulfilled in me. Yet what is written about me is
- 14:26Speaker 1: reaching fulfillment. The disciple said, see, Lord, here are two swords.
- 14:31Speaker 1: That's enough. He replied, it's an odd way to end
- 14:34Speaker 1: that section here, because one of the people will try
- 14:38Speaker 1: and use the sword in just a few minutes from
- 14:41Speaker 1: now and will get rebuked for it. But Jesus tells
- 14:45Speaker 1: them at this point prepare for a journey. And I
- 14:50Speaker 1: think this is not just a short journey. I think
- 14:52Speaker 1: this is more of things are going to change now,
- 14:58Speaker 1: and so prepare. But with that, we're going to end
- 15:02Speaker 1: this episode of the Bible Study Podcast. If you have
