- 0:05SPEAKER_05: What's up, everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_05: Welcome to yet another episode of the bottom line on sports.
- 0:10SPEAKER_05: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:12SPEAKER_05: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor, and this is our show about the intersection of sports and money.
- 0:18SPEAKER_05: Because everybody loves sports and everybody loves money.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Which one do you love?
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Wait, wait, which one do you love more?
- 0:24SPEAKER_05: Sports.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: Sports.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: All right, so we're even.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: We're one and one.
- 0:30SPEAKER_05: No, I love sports.
- 0:32SPEAKER_05: Um last vestiges of reality in the world.
- 0:37SPEAKER_05: Uh and money comes and goes.
- 0:38SPEAKER_05: And I know plenty of people.
- 0:40SPEAKER_05: Well, okay, let me rephrase that.
- 0:41SPEAKER_05: I don't know them personally.
- 0:43SPEAKER_05: Plenty of rich people are miserable.
- 0:46SPEAKER_05: So I go with sports.
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: I don't mind an opportunity to see if I could be happy with things.
- 0:55SPEAKER_05: I really don't mind that.
- 0:56SPEAKER_05: But in lieu of that, I know plenty of rich people who are miserable.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: So you know what's interesting?
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you one quick story from not to bore everybody, but uh, when I was young, uh when I was young, when our kids were really young, um, I would say, you know, what does mama love?
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Mama loves this.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: What does daddy do?
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Daddy loves, daddy loves money.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: And my daughter would say, and I love monkeys because money sounded like monkey.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Very exciting story.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Um, from my youth.
- 1:27SPEAKER_05: You know, we like to start every show with a number.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: And it's money.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: This week's number, 2.2 million.
- 1:34SPEAKER_05: That, my friends, drum roll, please, is how much money Rhonda Rousey made for her fight with Gina Carano, the former action movie star, turned MMA fighter.
- 1:48SPEAKER_05: Fight lasted 17 seconds.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: Tapped out arm bar.
- 1:54SPEAKER_05: That's something painful they do with your shoulder, they make you tap real quick.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, and so the fight was underwhelming.
- 2:02SPEAKER_05: Everybody figured Rhonda Roger would win because I couldn't believe this.
- 2:05SPEAKER_05: Jen Jenna Carano at her at her height when she was an action star.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: And she had some some some some um fighting experience.
- 2:14SPEAKER_05: Uh she was spectacularly built.
- 2:18SPEAKER_05: Who was she in?
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: I don't even know who she is.
- 2:21SPEAKER_05: Oh, I'm getting to that.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: So in a non-sexist way.
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: I mean, she's great body, well shaped.
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, well great shape, in shape.
- 2:30SPEAKER_05: But when she signed this fight a year and a half ago, I had no idea she signed that fight.
- 2:35SPEAKER_05: She was a hundred pounds overweight.
- 2:38SPEAKER_05: Now she's tall, like 5'9, I think.
- 2:41SPEAKER_05: So she can carry it a little bit.
- 2:42SPEAKER_05: She's still 100 pounds away.
- 2:44SPEAKER_05: She was weighing 241.
- 2:45SPEAKER_05: She weighed in at 141.
- 2:47SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: That's a huge, huge.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: Oddly enough, her father, Glenn Carano.
- 2:55SPEAKER_05: Do you know who Glenn Carano is?
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I have no idea who Glenn Carano is.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Glenn Carano, ladies and gentlemen, number 18 in your sports program, was the third string quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys in the 70s behind Roger Stauback and Danny Webb.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Where was Clint Longley?
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Wasn't he the third string quarterback then?
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: He was in the early 70s.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: He was in the early 70s, okay.
- 3:19SPEAKER_05: Glenn Corano was the late 70s.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:22SPEAKER_05: So that's her clan to fame to me.
- 3:24SPEAKER_05: Although she became more famous than her father.
- 3:27SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, the fight also had Nate Diaz.
- 3:30SPEAKER_05: You know, he used to be great, nice, just kind of cash and paid age.
- 3:34SPEAKER_05: But there were three fights, three bouts.
- 3:37SPEAKER_05: Ronnie Rousey got the biggest check, 2.2 million.
- 3:40SPEAKER_05: Jenny Carano, I think, got a million.
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: And so they uh they were both good.
- 3:44SPEAKER_05: And they drew more than the men.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: Um now that leads me to this.
- 3:50SPEAKER_05: I like now, I like MMA.
- 3:52SPEAKER_05: I can't tell you no whole bunch of fighters, but if there's a good MMA fight on, I'll watch it.
- 3:58SPEAKER_05: Um are you into MMA or boxing?
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Uh MMA, not at all.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Not at all.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Boxing, I used to, I used to love boxing.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Um, I because it there just aren't uh, you know, so the the old kind of heavyweights was what, you know, I kind of grew up with these incredible heavyweights who you know, whether it was, you know, Muhammad Ali is probably Muhammad Ali is probably one if one of my top three favorite athletes of all time.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: And so I was a huge boxing fan when I was a kid because I watched Muhammad Ali sort of later in his career.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: And then there was sort of a series of heavyweights who were really good and pretty interesting, but they were also like not gigantic like they are now, you know.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: And I I could feel like as a spectator, I could kind of relate to them, you know?
- 4:52SPEAKER_05: I'm uh I'm like you.
- 4:53SPEAKER_05: I I grew up uh with boxing, started with Ali, and then for those of us a certain age, the the middle weights took over in the 80s.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's true.
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: Roberto Duran moved up, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, they were all fighting each other.
- 5:08SPEAKER_05: I mean, it was probably one of the golden ages of boxing.
- 5:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then Mike Tyson showed up in the late 80s, and now the heavyweights are good again.
- 5:16SPEAKER_05: Um, but after that, man, at some point, boxing just faded to me.
- 5:22SPEAKER_05: It got to be boring, you know.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: Guys, you know, you're not throwing any punches, it's it's just boring.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:27SPEAKER_05: And then MMA popped up, and I'm like, these dudes are these dudes are fighting.
- 5:33SPEAKER_05: There is no let's fill it out for five rounds.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: No, these guys are throwing, they're fighting.
- 5:39SPEAKER_05: My dad was used to be a tournament uh karate fighter, so that was very familiar to me.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: Oh, I see.
- 5:45SPEAKER_05: So I didn't know that.
- 5:46SPEAKER_05: I'm not gonna sit there and tell you, I can sit and tell you, oh, these are top-ranked guys in the world.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: But if there's an MMA fight on, I'll go check it out if, you know, all things being equal.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I never really kind of got into MMA at all.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and I was much more, you know, I I much more preferred boxing.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: I used to cover boxing a little bit.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, I have a I remember watching a Mike Tyson fight against Razor Ruddick.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: He actually, his first fight against Razor Ruttick was an incredible fight.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: And this is again when you had sort of heavyweights who were like not much bigger than I am.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: You know, Mike Tyson's about 5'11, 215, 220.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: I'm about 6'1 and you know, two two 201, let's say.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh, you know, but but you know, so so I could sort of relate to him.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: And it was a great fight with with Razor Rudddock, and you're just isn't that kind of there isn't that kind of energy anymore.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: But it reminds me of a good story, though.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Um, about say again?
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: I'll be the judge of it.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: And not only it is not only is the story comes with an impression, which is even better, is that I I was covering it for somebody, and we we had the satellite feed coming, and at the time, it wasn't video wasn't ubiquitous.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: You couldn't get it at your fingertips.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: You had to have like I was at a television network and we had something coming in.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I think I may have been freelancing somewhere.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: And and I so I don't remember exactly what it is, but we had the news conference or the post-game interview with Mike Tyson come in that never made it to air, but we could see sort of the unvarnished Mike Tyson, and this is in like the late 80s, early 90s, which was incredible to see because nobody got to see it.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: So it was this fight against Razor Ruddick, which was a great fight between these two.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: It was really close.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Tyson won, but Ruddick was a just brutal to Tyson.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: I'd never really seen Tyson have to fight like that up until that point.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: And so they interviewed Mike Tyson afterwards, and here's my impersonation.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: You ready?
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: So, Mike, what do you what'd you think about the fight?
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: And he said, Ooh, rematch for Ray the Reddick.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Ooh, Ray the Ruddick.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: He hit so hard, he hits like a fucking mule kick.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: All right, that's my that's my story.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 8:05SPEAKER_04: I liked him.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, I like that.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, not too bad.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: But it was but what was great about it, aside from my wonderful impersonation, is that it was, to your point, it was a fight.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: It was it was it was good, that people had personality, it was exciting.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: What ended up happening is you started to have the alphabet soup of governing bodies take over boxing, and then it you just kind of lost interest.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: And then it became money.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: It became money really was always a major issue in boxing, but it destroyed the sport.
- 8:41SPEAKER_05: I think you're right, because at a certain point, everybody used to know who the heavyweight champ was.
- 8:46SPEAKER_05: Then it became the WBO champ, the WBC champ, the IBF champ, like, okay, who's the champ?
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: Now we're going to unite the belts, and but I don't want to fight this guy, so I'm going to give my belt up.
- 8:57SPEAKER_05: You're right.
- 8:58SPEAKER_05: They they screwed that thing up.
- 8:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, and you know, that's what happened so many times.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: But that was but that's the brilliance of uh what Dana White did with UFC is he said, this is what it is.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: It's a it's a single unit, it's a governing body.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: It is it they put on all the events, they didn't have external promoters, uh, although they kind of do now.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, and that that really kind of unified the sport and it allowed it to overtake, uh, allowed it to overtake boxing.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Plus, you know, it's a much more kind of visceral sport to watch, which is more appealing to a younger crowd than guys hitting with gloves.
- 9:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I get you on that.
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: Um, let's move on.
- 9:35SPEAKER_05: Let me give you some good news out there.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: This may be some of the best news I've heard today, and I'm going to share it with you.
- 9:42SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I want you to put it into practice before me, uh, because I'm a benevolent sort of guy.
- 9:50SPEAKER_05: And stop that.
- 9:51SPEAKER_05: You, my friend, can now, with no shame attached, open up an OnlyFans account.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Uh so who's saying I don't have one already?
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: Oh I don't.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: I don't.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Actually, what's interesting, people pay me not to be on OnlyFans.
- 10:07SPEAKER_05: No, no.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: Before, if your uh significant other guy on your computer say had an OnlyFans account, she probably thought you were one of those people to help Sophie Rain make a hundred million dollars in two or three years.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: But instead, now you can get on there and help your favorite Olympic athlete get the gold by opening up an OnlyFans account.
- 10:30SPEAKER_05: It's got to be good news to you, me, everybody.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: It's it's uh, you know, front office sports had a really good article about that in uh this week on the number of professional athletes who are opening up opening up OnlyFans accounts, and it's a lot of athletes who are in kind of the minor professional sports.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Uh and I was I was kind of I was actually after I read it, I wasn't surprised, but I hadn't really thought about that before.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Do you think that diminishes them in any way?
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Do you think anybody cares?
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Because I I don't think anybody cares.
- 11:06SPEAKER_05: I don't think anybody cares.
- 11:08SPEAKER_05: And for if we're gonna give it a buck, that's 100 for you old people.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: That means tell the truth.
- 11:14SPEAKER_05: It's um, you know, they're it's what we said, they're participating in fringe sports that don't have a lot of support.
- 11:22SPEAKER_05: It costs money to train, it costs money to travel, and if you don't have it, you got to go get it from somewhere.
- 11:30SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, sometimes you may be able to get a sponsor, but if you can't get a sponsor, because again, you're on a fringe sport, perhaps like beach volleyball or some of these other sports, um, this is just a way to generate a revenue stream.
- 11:44SPEAKER_05: And um, you know, and so you can have people subscribe to your to your page or your channel, and you can provide them with you know behind the scenes training.
- 11:54SPEAKER_05: You can you can have chats, you can have they can go into your DMs, ask special certain questions.
- 11:59SPEAKER_05: I mean, develop a relationship.
- 12:01SPEAKER_05: They can ask you for, hey, can you do me a training video?
- 12:03SPEAKER_05: You know, it's it's whatever, whatever people are willing to pay for, they can do, and all they gotta do is pay your subscription fee, which is usually, usually somewhere, get this between five and ten bucks.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: You seem to you seem to know the subscription fees pretty well.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: That's all.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: I read the damn story, so I wouldn't say but but I thought what I thought I was surprised by was the number of sponsors who actually work with these athletes on their OnlyFans feeds.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: And it kind of makes sense because if I must, yeah, if I'm paying a subscription, or even if I even if I'm, you know, uh a free, I guess there's free and paid accounts, if even if I'm on a free account, uh, you know, free account on on a given athlete's uh whatever page or whatever it's called, um it makes sense because I will have an affinity toward this athlete, you know, in a certain way, and I'm gonna follow what he or she does.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: And if I'm willing to pay money for it, it makes a lot of sense that a sponsor would say, hey, you know what, if the the the endorsement of this athlete might actually be worth a little bit more than the you know, sort of broader endorsement of other athletes because the consumer already is paying to watch this specific person.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: So that really surprised me.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: That seems to be where I think they can actually make the most money.
- 13:18SPEAKER_05: Um, it seems to be to follow me here.
- 13:21SPEAKER_05: It also feels like a podcast concept in terms of you have a very specific audience that's coming to this particular channel, and so you know that based on the audience is coming, based on the beach volleyball audience is coming to follow this person, we can sell swim gear on here, we can sell suntan lotion on here, we can sell sunglasses on here, we can sell volleyballs on here because this is as specific an audience as you can get.
- 13:50SPEAKER_05: And uh somebody who worked in TV for decades, all TV cares about is can we narrow down and figure out who the heck is watching this so we can charge the advertiser the most money possible.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: You're a hundred percent spot on.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: It's it's I I do some consulting with a lot of different media companies these days, and one of the things that I tell almost every one of them is you have to think narrow and deep, because narrow and deep, narrow and deep wins now.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: And that's not just in media, that's almost in anything, because there's so much information at your fingertips.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: You have if you are if you become a subject matter expert and you can go deep uh in your subject or or what whatever whatever your domain is, uh the narrower and deeper you go, actually, it's kind of the inverse.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: You you would think that it would be a limited audience, but the actual amount of money people are willing to pay is gonna be far greater because they are they're specifically interested in that.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: I look at it like I always tell people it's like a thesis in college that you write.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: If you have a broad thesis statement, you're not gonna really write a great paper.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: But if you have a very narrow and deep thesis statement, chances are your paper is gonna be much better.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: No, and it's um, you know, it's the same thing.
- 14:59SPEAKER_05: You can get a uh if you find the right niche, it's a very passionate audience.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: That's exactly right.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:06SPEAKER_05: And it doesn't, you know, it and when it's very passionate, it doesn't even have to be big as long as they're passionate.
- 15:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, you'd rather have a hundred passionate people who love you and follow you and ride with you, subscribers, than a thousand subscribers who come and go, and you're not really that big a deal to them.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Well, you want me to want me to give you, not only am I giving you a Mike Tyson impersonation, I'm gonna give you an echo, I'm gonna give you an economic term.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: There's far less price elasticity for those groups.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: People are willing to pay, you know, they're gonna be less, you know, a$1 price increase isn't gonna matter to them very much.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: I always look at it, I always look at it like this.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: If you have a son or a daughter who's playing a college sport, let's say they're playing, you know, college volleyball division three, and you live halfway across the country from them, you're gonna pay, if there's a video feed of their live games and you can't go to all your games, you don't really care if you pay$10 you know a month to watch these games or$50 a month.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: The same principle is with, you know, if you're really deeply interested or passionate in the subject you're following or the person you're following, um, you're kind of indifferent whether you pay$10 a month or$50 a month for that person in general.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot, there's far less elasticity.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: And you're right, you can actually uh you know, the the you can actually theoretically uh you know make just as much income doing doing that with a narrower audience, for sure.
- 16:32SPEAKER_05: Um apparently they've got 285 uh athletes uh with online only fans accounts right now.
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: And uh you know, I think it's uh I think it's only going to get bigger.
- 16:43SPEAKER_05: Now there are a few of them who are doing some uh some risque things, sure, but that's that's really the minority.
- 16:51SPEAKER_05: It's most of them are just out there giving you, and I think this is a big time today, and we talk about it in journalism.
- 16:57SPEAKER_05: Um it's giving people access to places they can't go.
- 17:02SPEAKER_05: So locker room, you're not there.
- 17:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, if I take you there, now you follow my content.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, it and that's what they're doing.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: So you you love me as an athlete, I will here, come watch me train.
- 17:14SPEAKER_05: Here's how I eat, here's what I'm eating for breakfast as a as an elite athlete.
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: Da-da-da-da-da.
- 17:20SPEAKER_05: And you know, it's uh it's not complicated, it just requires consistency and a fan base.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: And I think the podcast analogy is a good one.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: I think one of the reasons that you know the really good athlete podcasts that are out there, or maybe not the good ones, the ones that have the biggest audiences, are the ones that create that kind of that atmosphere or that feel or that or that dynamic where you think, oh my gosh, I'm actually eavesdropping on a conversation with a couple of athletes that I could never have access to before.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: And those that those those types of podcasts work really well for precisely the reason that you said, which is it provides that access, you almost feel as if you're eavesdropping on them.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: And that's that's a very powerful tool to really you know build an audience and also to you know connect with an audience.
- 18:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:08SPEAKER_05: Uh bottom line for me, I think this is only the beginning.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: They got 285 athletes now.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: I would bet you this time next year, it'll be double.
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: Easy.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: Because once people see that it's a revenue stream, for them, once advertisers see I get a very specific audience that I can really uh go after, oh, the money will increase and then the people involved will increase on both sides.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Bottom line for me, agree with you that it's gonna be a the this is this uh audience, uh the the number of creators are gonna explode on there.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: I think you're gonna have a number of events that are gonna be catalysts to create that.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: And the biggest event that I think will have be the biggest catalyst to attract people on OnlyFans will be the Olympics, because the Olympics is a collection of these minor sports where you got people who are very passionate about them.
- 18:59SPEAKER_05: That's a that's an unusually good point from you.
- 19:05SPEAKER_05: Let's move on.
- 19:06SPEAKER_05: You know, man, they will not college football is cool, man.
- 19:09SPEAKER_05: I love college football.
- 19:11SPEAKER_05: I've covered the NFL for parts of 30 years.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: College football is my favorite sport.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: I love and not just because my buckey's are good.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: I love the pageantry, I just love the excitement with it.
- 19:22SPEAKER_05: Um, they're doing their best to try to screw it up, in my opinion.
- 19:26SPEAKER_05: Fox wants a 2014 college football tournament uh playoff.
- 19:30SPEAKER_05: ESPN is pushing back.
- 19:32SPEAKER_05: The Big Ten is trying to, you know, it's funny how the Big Ten, and you've talked about this a lot, it's kind of usurped the SEC's role in terms of being the power conference right now.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: Um they're the big bully 10 right now.
- 19:47SPEAKER_05: Well, that's what I hope they bully and they win this particular fight because um there's not enough, to me, tell me what you think.
- 19:57SPEAKER_04: There ain't enough good elite college football teams to satisfy 2014 playoff.
- 20:04SPEAKER_05: You're gonna get some five loss teams, some four-lost teams in there.
- 20:07SPEAKER_05: Think about who's in the top 25 right now.
- 20:11SPEAKER_05: 20 to 25.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: And you're just like, come on, man, stop.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: So so what's happening is all the conferences want the 2014 playoff, it looks like, or at least gonna back it, with the exception of the SEC right now.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: So the Big Ten wants this to happen.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Uh what's what I find, I guess, a little bit surprising is it doesn't appear that the television networks have as strong of a demand for these products as you might think they would have.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: You know, so I think that that's ultimately what's going to drive this, as it does everything in college sports these days, which is you know, the the television rights.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Are the television rights gonna go up with a 24 playoff?
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Are they gonna impact the ratings during the regular season or or the viewership during the regular season or the regular season rights?
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: We we don't know yet.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: But what so from a competitive point of view, I actually think, well, how many teams are there in the playoffs now?
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: 12?
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: I I think from a competitive point of view, I think you maybe need maximum eight teams.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: There's really only six to eight teams every year that can win the championship.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: That's that I think is right.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: But if you take a step back from the pure competitive uh idea of a national champion, the 24-game, uh 24 team playoff could be really, really good because I would say the first, you know, you'll take first eight will get buys, and so the 16 will, you know, 16 will go down to eight, I assume, right?
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: And those first eight games should all be on the college campuses.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Those will be great.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: And then if you play the next round, the round of 16, also at the home field of the, you know, colleges, you know, so the one through eight, not only do they get a bye, they get home field advantage.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Their first game, okay, then I think then I think you'll have a tremendous amount of interest in these.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: But if it becomes like a generic, like, you know, if I have to see another game, like an NCAA tournament game, if I have to see another NCAA tournament game in Dayton or Greensboro where there's like six fans, it's no good.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: But if you do that for the first couple of rounds, maybe.
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: Well, here's the problem with that.
- 22:23SPEAKER_05: We just got through a few weeks ago talking about these buys are bad because you're sitting for a month, somebody else has got a game, and there's a reason why Indiana, which proven to be easily the best team in college football last year, they're the only team that's won with a buy since they started.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: And so I think if you can come up with a system where there's not a buy, um that's better.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: I like playing at home, and maybe, maybe if you have to travel to my place, it I get juiced up more than if I'm playing, you know, at some neutral field.
- 23:00SPEAKER_05: And so maybe the buy wouldn't be as impactful.
- 23:03SPEAKER_05: Um, but again, when are they gonna start playing?
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: Uh because you know, kids are out from school.
- 23:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, it's you know, it's a it's a whole different vibe.
- 23:12SPEAKER_05: Even if you are playing at the crib in December, you know, I mean, depending on where, uh, I don't know, maybe you can still sell it out anyway.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Well, well, no, you'll you'll you'll sell it out, I think for sure.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: I I think the there's a couple things that have to happen.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: One is that you can't wait three weeks to start the you know playoffs.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: And you gotta maybe you wait two weeks, you have the Army Navy game, its own weekend, and then you start.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Okay, so you'll get so the worst thing is maybe a couple the the better teams will get two weeks off.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: But if you're the number one seed playing against the 16th seed, you're gonna win.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: You know, if you're number two playing against 15, you're gonna win.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: You know, so uh in in even if there's an upset, you're gonna be like two playing against, you know, the 23rd seed or something.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: You're you're gonna win.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: So uh and I think they should reseed the rounds as well.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: So, you know, number one team plays the lowest seeded team regardless of where they came from in the in the previous game.
- 24:11SPEAKER_05: I like that.
- 24:11SPEAKER_05: I like that.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I think there's ways, I agree with you on the buy, but I think there's ways to mitigate that.
- 24:16SPEAKER_05: Um, I looked at the bottom five teams.
- 24:20SPEAKER_05: So if they had done it last year, uh number 20 was Arizona, number 21 was uh Virginia, 22 Georgia Tech, 23 Tennessee, 24 Easton.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, none of those, none of those teams would have won anything.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree with you.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, but you could say you could say the same thing for the NBA every year, too, which is that there's really five or six teams that can win it all, you know.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Um, and I by the way, I think the NBA for I think the four best teams are actually in the uh are in the conference finals this year.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: But yeah, but uh yeah, so so I think it's gonna be a question of, you know, I I actually don't think that that's gonna be a competitive disadvantage by having a buy because the disparity in talent is so wide, and you're gonna be playing at home, I would assume.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I think that mitigates the buy issue, but it's a real issue nonetheless.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: And I think that's gonna be uh that that's gonna be really interesting to see this year in the 12-team playoff if that trend uh continues to hold.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: No, I I'm uh yeah, I think that uh yeah, it just I want it to be competitive.
- 25:39SPEAKER_05: I'm not interested in seeing some six, some uh seven and four team play.
- 25:44SPEAKER_05: Um you know, it's uh because again, as we've discussed, there's even now there's really, as you said, there's really only five or six teams that can legitimately compete and win it.
- 25:56SPEAKER_05: Um and now that especially until they get a salary cap because some teams like Ohio State and Oregon, Alabama are spending 45, Texas, they're spending 45 million dollars and somebody for a roster, and somebody else is spending you know 18, 20 million dollars for a roster, that's a big old disparity.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, Signeti and Indiana says, Oh, we don't really do it like that.
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: It'll be interesting to see how long they can they can be like, well, we don't pay, you know, because again, they're a big state school, they should be able to find some money.
- 26:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, and you go and kids and parents want what they want.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: Like, okay, it's great.
- 26:40SPEAKER_05: You're Indiana, you got a great program, you got a great team.
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: I'm not coming there for a million dollars if Alabama's going to pay me four and a half million dollars.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: No chance.
- 26:51unknown: Right.
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: So the issue will be can you can Signetti keep winning with lesser talent because of his culture?
- 27:00SPEAKER_05: And um, you know, that'll be the test.
- 27:03SPEAKER_05: That'll be the question.
- 27:04SPEAKER_05: Nobody knows the answer.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: The the answer I I do.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: The answer is yes to a point, and then it won't matter.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, you look at you know, look at the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: I think the culture at Pittsburgh is better than anything, you know, in terms of the NFL.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: It's a great culture.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: They don't have a quarterback.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: They can't they can't win.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: They don't have an offense, they can't win.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I mean, I guess it's it's not the same thing as a salary, you know, as paying players, but uh look at look at the look at the SEC right now.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: The SEC, Texas, I don't consider part of the you know the traditional SEC because but there's one like big bully team in the SEC now, and that's Texas.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: There aren't really any bully schools left in the SEC because of money.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: That changed over the last three or four years, you know.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, I think the um the Indiana situation was very, very specific because it was a it's a great coach who offered an opportunity to a lot of athletes who weren't getting recognition or weren't getting paid elsewhere.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: So it kind of all came together.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: But now he's gonna have to pay, or Indiana's gonna have to pay in order to get the talent there.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: So I think it's gonna be a vastly different it's it's gonna be yes to a point, and then and then another program's gonna emerge like that, and then then eventually that's gonna be overtaken by well, you gotta pay now.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Now that I'm a top program, I'm expecting to be paid.
- 28:32SPEAKER_05: I think the most interesting thing for me for Indiana, because they've never been good.
- 28:37SPEAKER_05: It's not like they were good, then it fell off.
- 28:40SPEAKER_05: They've never been good.
- 28:42SPEAKER_05: So to me, it's all about how they handle this year and next year being the honey, where you are now everybody's big game, where eat everybody gets up for you, everybody prepared, everybody spends a portion of their practice getting ready for you.
- 28:57SPEAKER_05: And it's just a different lifestyle and a different, a different world when you get everybody's best game every week.
- 29:06SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: That's that's uh yeah, that's that's very yeah, it's a Ohio State has a different uh playing against Ohio State's is a different game for every you know, it's like it's like playing in the final round of a masters with Tiger Woods, it's just a different experience.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you know, but but I I believe very strongly that Indiana happened to have a quarterback who accounted for probably two to three wins for them last year.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: And they're not gonna have it's it's unusual to get a quarterback quarterback like that uh a couple years in a row.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, and and so I think they'll fall back to the pack pretty pretty quickly uh this year.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: But I could be wrong.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: I could be wrong.
- 29:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh bottom line for me, I ain't trying to see the tournament go to 24 teams.
- 29:50SPEAKER_05: 16 I can live with.
- 29:51SPEAKER_05: I might even like that, but 24, way too much for me.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: But bottom line for me, I just want the playoffs to start a couple of weeks after the season and not wait three or four weeks.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: I think that's going to even the playing field as much as possible.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: And if it does go to 24 teams, I agree with you, that's too many.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: But let's make sure we play home games for the teams that earn the bye.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: And let's make sure we reshuffle the seeding to reflect the top eight teams getting to play the weakest seeds.
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: And now, friends, it's time for our favorite conversation of each show.
- 30:25SPEAKER_05: It's the Buckeye Corner.
- 30:27SPEAKER_05: This week's topic, Ryan Day, my boy, says, hey, get rid of the Big Ten championship game.
- 30:34SPEAKER_05: It'll make Michigan and Ohio State more meaningful at the end.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: Now, I think what he's saying is that'll be the true Big Ten championship to hell with USC and Oregon and Penn State and uh and everybody else.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: I I think that's exactly what he's saying.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: Um I I also think he's looking up at the Big Ten conference, you know, championship game and thinking nobody wants to play in these anymore.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: They're not that meaningful.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: They can actually hurt you rather than help you.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: So a lot of teams don't want to play.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: There was even talk, you know, I was reading somewhere, there was even talk about some teams who, if they knew they were getting into the college football playoff, might actually rest players in these conference championship games.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: So I think that I think they kind much like the bowl games, conference championship games have become quickly outdated.
- 31:29SPEAKER_05: No, they served a purpose, they were important for time.
- 31:33SPEAKER_05: Time has moved on, change is good, evolution is good, uh, things are always evolving, constantly evolving, whether it's business or whether it's football, football is big business, so it seems it makes sense that it would continue to evolve.
- 31:47SPEAKER_05: And so, yeah, I think I think uh I think with one more announcement away, because once they get this extended playoff, I think they'll say extended playoff is this, that means the end of the conference championship games as we know them.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: Okay, there's 12 teams in the college football playoff this season, whatever you know, 26, 27.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: Let's say four of them are from the Big Ten.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: Who are those four teams this year?
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Let's see if we agree on this.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna write them down.
- 32:17SPEAKER_05: Oh, I'm I'm not.
- 32:18SPEAKER_05: Ohio State, Oregon, SC, and um probably Michigan, because I think Kyle Whittingham is a good coach.
- 32:31SPEAKER_05: And they will they will play football the way it's supposed to be played, and they should have enough talent if they play the game the way it's supposed to be played to get to the playoffs.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: You're right on three of the four.
- 32:44SPEAKER_05: You have Michigan not there.
- 32:45SPEAKER_05: Who do you have in his place?
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: Penn State.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: Have you seen Penn State's schedule?
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: No.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: Is it cakewalk?
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: Penn State, Penn State, you know, I like Matt Cook too.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: Penn Penn State's schedule is Texas AM's schedule last year.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Where Texas AM was like undefeated, but didn't really play anybody.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Penn State's gonna be, that's gonna be the big, that's my prediction.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be the big story in the Big Ten this year, is that Penn State makes uh Penn State's gonna have a have like a you know an 11-0 season or 12-0 season, no one's gonna figure out why.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: But it's interesting, you don't think Indiana's gonna make it this year.
- 33:23SPEAKER_05: God, I forgot about Indiana.
- 33:25SPEAKER_05: So okay, let me think about this again.
- 33:27SPEAKER_05: See, this is what happened when you asked me to spur the moment.
- 33:31SPEAKER_05: Okay, that makes it a more interesting question.
- 33:34SPEAKER_05: So there's Ohio State's in it.
- 33:39SPEAKER_05: Oregon is in it.
- 33:41SPEAKER_05: I really think USC is good.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: USC, USC's good.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: You know, it's you'll uh Karina's at USC.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: Uh family weekend is Ohio State USC this year.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: So we're going.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: So we we've already already got everything ready to go.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna watch Ohio State USC Halloween night in Los Angeles.
- 34:01SPEAKER_05: I'm trying to work that out.
- 34:02SPEAKER_05: I got a few moving parts I'm trying to work that out.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: You're you're coming.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: You're coming, we're going.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: Um Karina's got a senior house with it's like a compound of two houses with 16 of her closest friends.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: So you gotta come.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: There's gonna be lots of happening there.
- 34:18SPEAKER_05: So we're staying at the compound.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: I'm not staying at the compound.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying we're we're going to the compound.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding?
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: No, I'm staying tonight.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: I already booked a hotel like in Santa Monica.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm I'm staying far.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: I'm staying far far away from UNC.
- 34:34SPEAKER_04: That's like a two-hour ride.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: No, it's with LA traffic.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Well, with LA traffic, yeah, maybe.
- 34:40SPEAKER_05: Um, okay, anyway.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: Yes, that's what I'm thinking.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Santa Monica is just uh, you know Santa Monica's a nice part of LA.
- 34:52SPEAKER_05: Ohio State, Oregon, USC, Indiana.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: No Michigan, no Penn State.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: I think the teams that are for for sure the only two that I feel 100%, not 100%, the team, two teams I feel most confident about are USC and Oregon.
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: Um, I was gonna say, you you're not really uh you think the buck ass schedule bites them this year.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: I think this is gonna be a down year for Ohio State.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: And I think they're now they are gonna get the benefit of the doubt because they're such a huge draw and have such a national following that they could have a slightly down season and still make the playoff.
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: But I think USC and Oregon and Penn State are the three that I think are almost for sure in.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: And then I think you can make the case of Indiana, Ohio State, or possibly Michigan, because I think if Michigan's quarterback is actually good, which he might be, uh Michigan could could potentially sneak in there.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: But that's that's about it.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: I I think uh, but I I really I really like Oregon and USC this year.
- 36:01SPEAKER_05: That's seven good teams.
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: Really good teams, uh battling out for probably four spots.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: So wouldn't see so wouldn't it be good if there was a 2014 playoff?
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: No.
- 36:14SPEAKER_05: I'd rather have the best ones.
- 36:16SPEAKER_05: I want to be part of the elite, the elite class.
- 36:19SPEAKER_05: That's that's what I'm that's what I'm looking for.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: All right, so wait, so you're so your four are Oregon, USC, Ohio State, and Indiana.
- 36:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think I like Signetti.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 36:30SPEAKER_05: I just like him.
- 36:31SPEAKER_05: I think I like his swag.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:33SPEAKER_05: I like the way he puts a team together.
- 36:35SPEAKER_05: Those kids have now bought into whatever he says, dude.
- 36:39SPEAKER_05: They like it, yes, sir.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: Same thing, but right, and I and I have USC, Oregon, Ohio State, the same as you, and I have Penn State instead of Indiana, but I think Indiana, listen, there's also a chance that Indiana is gonna go 12 and 0 this year.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:53SPEAKER_05: I mean, so I think it'll be fun.
- 36:55SPEAKER_05: I think college football will be fun.
- 36:57SPEAKER_05: College football is always fun.
- 36:58SPEAKER_05: It's my favorite sport.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: My favorite sport by far.
- 37:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's not even close.
- 37:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah and uh, you know, now I gotta work on uh, you know, it's never it's never just about me.
- 37:07SPEAKER_05: I'm trying to see if I can get my son, you know, out to California that time of year, you know.
- 37:12SPEAKER_05: So and that's cross-country trip for him.
- 37:14SPEAKER_05: So yeah.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, you're you're not that you're not that far.
- 37:17SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm a three-hour flight.
- 37:19SPEAKER_05: Not a big deal for me.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: You're not that far.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:22SPEAKER_05: Uh so the bottom line for me, I guess it's I believe in the Buckeyes.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: Tough schedule.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: They may drop a couple more games, but they'll still figure out a way to get where they're supposed to get, provided we find a running back.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Bo Bo Jackson, but not the good Bo Jackson, the other Bo Jackson.
- 37:40SPEAKER_05: I was gonna say it's not really so much Bo.
- 37:42SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, High State has not had a dominant offensive line the last two or three years.
- 37:46SPEAKER_05: They've had great skilled people, but at the end of the day, now the defensive line has been really good, but at the end of the day, you got to be able to move people and stop people from moving you.
- 37:57SPEAKER_05: And they've not been able to move people on the offensive line.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: And that's what and that's what Indiana and Miami did to them.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: Those are two losses, that's exactly what happened.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: Bottom line for me, I'm worried about Ohio State.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: And I'm not sure Julian Saints gonna finish the year as a starting quarterback.
