- 0:42Speaker 2: Yes, I actually am going back to my roots kind
- 0:46Speaker 2: of because I used said drink drinks on here. So
- 0:53Speaker 2: I made a very light version of a margarita. And
- 0:58Speaker 2: I will talk about why at the end, but you're
- 0:59Speaker 2: gonna have to stick around until the end.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Oh no to know why.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I will, well, God, I would hope so. But before
- 1:11Speaker 2: we get into today's topic, just a reminder, Samantha and I,

- 2:16Speaker 2: we sincerely do hope to see you.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yes, So for these happy hours, the topics can go
- 2:25Speaker 2: all over the place. This one is one I'm dying
- 2:30Speaker 2: to talk about, but also.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Trying to.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Stay contained because if you if you're a listener of
- 2:40Speaker 2: this show, you know when I get all fired up
- 2:43Speaker 2: about something that's its being written for presentations being had.
- 2:56Speaker 2: So what I want to say about this one before
- 2:59Speaker 2: we get into it is number one spoilers for the
- 3:06Speaker 2: recent movie Obsession. But I am going to do my
- 3:10Speaker 2: very very best to.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Only spoil.
- 3:15Speaker 2: The main plot, like the through line of the plot,
- 3:21Speaker 2: Like there's a lot more that happens that I'm going
- 3:24Speaker 2: to try not to spoil, but the kind of the
- 3:27Speaker 2: essential thing that it's hinging on, I am going to
- 3:31Speaker 2: have to spoil for this. So if you don't want
- 3:34Speaker 2: to be spoiled. Just the movie's still really popular, it's
- 3:38Speaker 2: still in theaters.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Go see it.
- 3:42Speaker 2: But also content warning because we are going to be
- 3:48Speaker 2: touching on topics of sexual assaults.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah, So the reason I really wanted to talk about
- 4:01Speaker 2: this is because Samantha knows this. People don't believe me,
- 4:07Speaker 2: but I swear I either saw a low rent version
- 4:11Speaker 2: of this a year ago, or like maybe they had been.
- 4:16Speaker 2: The creators had been talking about it, so I sort
- 4:18Speaker 2: of knew what the plot was, and I was from
- 4:24Speaker 2: the moment I heard the plot, I was very interested
- 4:29Speaker 2: in how audiences would react, and so that's mainly what
- 4:33Speaker 2: I want to talk about today, just because I think
- 4:38Speaker 2: that the reaction I experienced when I saw it in
- 4:43Speaker 2: theaters would have been very different a couple decades ago.
- 4:51Speaker 2: That's mostly what I want to talk about. But it
- 4:55Speaker 2: is hard to discuss about the spoiling the whole movie,
- 4:58Speaker 2: so I'm going to do I'm gonna do my best.
- 5:01Speaker 2: But I was aware of the general plot in some
- 5:07Speaker 2: way or other. I don't know what happened, but I
- 5:10Speaker 2: did know, so I went in pretty aware of what
- 5:14Speaker 2: was gonna go down. And I have to say watching
- 5:19Speaker 2: it in theaters, I was seated next to a very
- 5:23Speaker 2: young couple on a date. First of all, awkward, It
- 5:28Speaker 2: was kind of awkward, and they were doing that thing
- 5:31Speaker 2: where they're like making jokes and like during the whole thing,
- 5:36Speaker 2: trying to be flirty. But over hearing their conversation, I
- 5:41Speaker 2: was like, at least they're on board with what I
- 5:45Speaker 2: think you should take away from this film.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:50Speaker 2: They also said something really funny at the beginning, where
- 5:53Speaker 2: one of them said, I never listened to anything that
- 5:57Speaker 2: isn't on one point five speed. So this sounds like
- 6:00Speaker 2: not talking normally to me any.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I agree, I have hard time now too.
- 6:06Speaker 1: That cracked me up. I thought that was funny.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Yes, as people who make content that we are very
- 6:12Speaker 2: aware people speed up.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Please do I sound better at one point seven?
- 6:18Speaker 1: Specifically?
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes when I listen back, I'm like, you sound
- 6:22Speaker 2: like you're drunk or I don't know what's wrong with you.
- 6:26Speaker 2: But yeah, anyway, So this movie is a horror movie
- 6:34Speaker 2: and it does something interesting because the protagonist nobody wants
- 6:41Speaker 2: him to succeed, so I feel like he's a very
- 6:45Speaker 2: nice guy trope that actually gets treated realistically.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So that's what I was intrigued.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I really wanted to know how people would react to
- 6:57Speaker 2: a main male character.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Who is.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Trying to get romantically with a female best friend and doesn't,
- 7:12Speaker 2: but then uses other methods to do it that are
- 7:17Speaker 2: very nefarious. It's basically a wish gone wrong type of story,
- 7:22Speaker 2: like you wish for this world piece and then the
- 7:25Speaker 2: world blows up or something. That's essentially what's going on.
- 7:29Speaker 1: But he does it.
- 7:33Speaker 2: He makes a wish that she'll love him forever and
- 7:37Speaker 2: like more than anything else, and then you can imagine
- 7:41Speaker 2: how it goes wrong from there. That's my basic plot
- 7:48Speaker 2: of what happens. But I was curious how people would
- 7:54Speaker 2: react to a story where, you know, usually we would
- 7:59Speaker 2: be told you want them to get together Dave childhood friends,
- 8:04Speaker 2: and here's the main character, and he's like a nerdy,
- 8:08Speaker 2: shy guy, so that's what we should be wanting. But
- 8:14Speaker 2: then he does this thing and doesn't correct it when
- 8:19Speaker 2: he realizes he does not correct it, and the audience
- 8:26Speaker 2: was horrified at him, like they were genuinely like rooting
- 8:30Speaker 2: for his death. I was so it sounds horrible. I
- 8:37Speaker 2: was so happy. I was just like validated, because this
- 8:40Speaker 2: is how you should react to a situation like this
- 8:45Speaker 2: because it in the movie, it's made clear she's aware
- 8:50Speaker 2: she just can't control her body, Like her body autonomy
- 8:54Speaker 2: is taken away, her personality is taken away. So all
- 8:59Speaker 2: he really cared about was like objectifying her and this
- 9:04Speaker 2: idealized version of.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Her and owning her.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And he knows like she keeps trying to like break
- 9:14Speaker 2: out of it, and he just.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Ignores it.
- 9:18Speaker 2: His friends, her friends confront him about it or like
- 9:22Speaker 2: something's wrong with her, she's not acting like herself, and
- 9:27Speaker 2: he's just like, oh, no, she's fine, even though it's
- 9:31Speaker 2: increasingly clear as she is not fine. But I did
- 9:38Speaker 2: it was a very upsetting film, which I thought I
- 9:41Speaker 2: knew it was going to be.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But I did like that it was portrayed he.
- 9:46Speaker 2: This is not a good This is a good guys, Yeah,
- 9:51Speaker 2: because I feel like in the eighties there are a
- 9:54Speaker 2: bunch of movies like this, right, but instead of it
- 9:58Speaker 2: being oh, he's the villain, and it was like, oh,
- 10:01Speaker 2: he he got one over this girl, or he's able
- 10:04Speaker 2: to control this girl or all of this stuff, like
- 10:08Speaker 2: the nerds control of the world and she's just a
- 10:11Speaker 2: stupid object that I that I get to control.
- 10:17Speaker 1: But This was very much like.
- 10:20Speaker 2: You are the bad guy and you think you are
- 10:25Speaker 2: the good guy.
- 10:31Speaker 1: If I, oh, if I could, I would do a
- 10:34Speaker 1: whole episode on it.
- 10:35Speaker 2: But like I watching it, the how angry people were
- 10:45Speaker 2: at him in the theater and how like.
- 10:51Speaker 1: It was.
- 10:51Speaker 2: You could probably feel it like people were mad. And
- 10:58Speaker 2: that's what comforted me, because I was worried I was
- 11:00Speaker 2: going to go in and see a different reaction that
- 11:05Speaker 2: was like, oh, well he got the girl, or like
- 11:10Speaker 2: that's what he deserves, or because he he seems nice
- 11:14Speaker 2: in the beginning, this is what he's entitled to. So
- 11:22Speaker 2: that's I was very relieved. You know, that was not
- 11:27Speaker 2: the reaction at all, And I think it's been a
- 11:31Speaker 2: big change. I really do think a couple like a
- 11:35Speaker 2: decade or so ago, that would not have been the case.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I did read it.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I know nothing about this film. All I know is
- 11:52Speaker 3: that they decided to extend it in the theaters because
- 11:56Speaker 3: they was doing so well, which was unheard of. That
- 11:58Speaker 3: actually pulled back from streaming, which is again all heard of.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Apparently that caused some like controversy right there because the
- 12:08Speaker 3: streaming platforms weren't happy that they were losing money. Whatever whatnot.
- 12:13Speaker 3: That's but I did read that before it was approved,
- 12:19Speaker 3: executives were trying to talk the director and writer into
- 12:23Speaker 3: changing it to make him more likable, yeah, to make
- 12:27Speaker 3: him more of a hero, and they refused, Like they
- 12:30Speaker 3: went through, of course, it's gonna be a publicity stunt
- 12:32Speaker 3: because it is being received so well, to give them
- 12:36Speaker 3: more credit. But it seemed also plausible. But they're like, no,
- 12:40Speaker 3: but it's a white, handsome main character. We don't want
- 12:44Speaker 3: to villainize him so much. This much type of thing.
- 12:49Speaker 3: I don't nothing about that, but I did see a
- 12:51Speaker 3: headline about that.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I would believe it because it felt very different.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It's an interesting.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Premise to have your protagonist be somebody so unlikable, and
- 13:06Speaker 2: that's I read.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I read an article about that.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Of like, that's one of the reasons this movie stands
- 13:12Speaker 2: out is that there is a part of you is
- 13:17Speaker 2: protagonist and you're you know, at first, at least you're hoping, oh,
- 13:22Speaker 2: they get together, but then it just becomes so clear
- 13:25Speaker 2: and so horrifying his actions and how he does not
- 13:32Speaker 2: care about her at all, And there are scenes people
- 13:40Speaker 2: were like gasping in horror, and I just think that
- 13:46Speaker 2: would have played differently a while ago, but I was
- 13:50Speaker 2: very happy that everybody was horrified.
- 13:52Speaker 1: By it in the right like that reaction.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, like a very that can be such a It
- 14:00Speaker 2: matters how you frame things, and it matters that they
- 14:05Speaker 2: didn't make that sexy at all.
- 14:07Speaker 1: It was horrifying, like.
- 14:09Speaker 2: People were upset, And so that is mostly what I
- 14:18Speaker 2: wanted to talk about today, because I knowing what the
- 14:23Speaker 2: plot was, I went in very concerned how people would react.
- 14:27Speaker 2: But yeah, I have to say, all right.
- 14:31Speaker 3: So they passed that. The audience with you who passed
- 14:34Speaker 3: the vibe check.
- 14:35Speaker 2: The audience with me passed the vibe check. I think
- 14:39Speaker 2: generally though, uh, that has been the takeaway. I think
- 14:43Speaker 2: they were clear enough, like this this guy's no good.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Oh, just the way it like unfolds and everything.
- 14:54Speaker 3: If it was his best friend, her best friend, his
- 14:56Speaker 3: best friend, to do that to your best friend, like
- 14:59Speaker 3: you built that and you still objectify someone that to
- 15:02Speaker 3: that point, but they weren't human enough for you, yeah
- 15:07Speaker 3: to think this is wrong?
- 15:08Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, and he there's a scene in the beginning
- 15:12Speaker 2: he's like rehearsing to ask her out, and he panics
- 15:18Speaker 2: when the moment comes and he doesn't and he had
- 15:23Speaker 2: that chance, and he didn't do it, and then he
- 15:26Speaker 2: did the wish thing and then just went, oh, so.
- 15:30Speaker 3: We don't even know if she would She might have
- 15:32Speaker 3: said yes.
- 15:33Speaker 1: She might have, but I think it's heavily implied she
- 15:35Speaker 1: wouldn't have.
- 15:38Speaker 2: But because she was, she kind of asked him out
- 15:41Speaker 2: like outright, like do you like me?
- 15:44Speaker 1: What is this?
- 15:45Speaker 2: And he was like, oh no, and then he called
- 15:47Speaker 2: her a name that she really hates and she knew
- 15:49Speaker 2: he and so she left and he panicked and tried
- 15:56Speaker 2: this wish thing, but he never It makes that point
- 16:01Speaker 2: clear that he never even really had the courage to
- 16:03Speaker 2: be upfront honest about his emotions and feelings about her,
- 16:10Speaker 2: which I do think is another part of the whole
- 16:13Speaker 2: nice guy yeah kind of persona. But yeah, I'm trying
- 16:19Speaker 2: to go see it again with some other friends because
- 16:22Speaker 2: I don't I haven't had a chance to just talk.
- 16:26Speaker 1: About it, digest it.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Yeah, because I saw it with a mutual friend of
- 16:33Speaker 2: ours a couple of weeks ago, but we had to
- 16:36Speaker 2: leave right after, so.
- 16:37Speaker 1: I haven't had the I need to know, I need
- 16:41Speaker 1: to talk about it.
- 16:45Speaker 2: So we'll see if I have any other any other takeaways,
- 16:48Speaker 2: maybe when it comes on to streaming, we'll do a
- 16:52Speaker 2: spoiled Saturday. But yeah, yeah, no animal dies in it, right, Oh,
- 17:00Speaker 2: an animal definitely dies, but it dies.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I can't scream, but something else halfs you might be
- 17:10Speaker 1: on your own, doesn't one. I'm just gonna watch you
- 17:12Speaker 1: have an episode where I'm not here. I'll just I'll
- 17:14Speaker 1: give you the timestamped. Just okay, avoid all this part.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, but uh it was it was
- 17:25Speaker 2: a movie people were watching and not knowing like should
- 17:29Speaker 2: I laugh at this or not because it's so weird,
- 17:35Speaker 2: but they did react and what I think is the
- 17:37Speaker 2: appropriate way, the appropriate manner. Okay, when it came to this, really,
- 17:43Speaker 2: in my opinion, horrendous.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Way.
- 17:47Speaker 2: This guy was acting who normally, I think in the
- 17:51Speaker 2: past would have been sympathized, like a lot of sympathy,
- 17:54Speaker 2: but now they're no, no, no, no.
- 17:59Speaker 1: This is not right. Okay.
- 18:02Speaker 2: So those are my abbreviated thoughts on obsession.
- 18:08Speaker 1: We'll come back to it.
- 18:10Speaker 2: I did want to say, briefly, as I mentioned at
- 18:12Speaker 2: the top, I have like a margarita. It's because my
- 18:18Speaker 2: beloved show Saver is coming to an end. Our final
- 18:23Speaker 2: episode is on tequila but we're not going completely away,
- 18:30Speaker 2: so like I think we might pop up every now
- 18:32Speaker 2: and again, but this is the end of our regular run.
- 18:37Speaker 2: So just to note, if you're interested, we've got a
- 18:42Speaker 2: lot of episodes, go check it out, and we're hoping
- 18:46Speaker 2: to bring co hosts on that show with me Lauren
- 18:51Speaker 2: over on Spinty for food segments, yeah, crossovers, yes, yes,
- 18:57Speaker 2: So cheers to all of you. You here's the yes.
- 19:02Speaker 1: A good run, Yeah it was.
- 19:05Speaker 2: It was a good run. I'm going to do I'm
- 19:07Speaker 2: going to do a happy hour. That's a me feelings
- 19:12Speaker 2: about it, and you should because it was the first
- 19:16Speaker 2: time I was a host. It was the first. It
- 19:19Speaker 2: was a first for a lot of me. It was
- 19:21Speaker 2: the first for a lot of me. Makes no sense,
