- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Gino here in the Yukon Women's Basketball coach
- 0:02Speaker 1: A Show, of Course. The women take on Fairleigh Dickinson
- 0:05Speaker 1: on Wednesday night. Our radio coverage begins at six thirty,
- 0:08Speaker 1: game tips off shortly after seven here in the Yukon
- 0:10Speaker 1: Sports Network, the Varsity Network app, and the Varsity Network
- 0:13Speaker 1: dot Com. We'll discuss that night in a segment or
- 0:17Speaker 1: two here on the Coach of Show with Gino. I
- 0:20Speaker 1: thought Ice Brady gave you a fantastic game. Yeah, she
- 0:22Speaker 1: got in a little bit of foul trouble, but can't complain.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I mean she hit a couple of big shots, she
- 0:27Speaker 1: hauled down nine boards, she gave you three assists in
- 0:30Speaker 1: a couple of blocks. I mean, she's starting to get
- 0:33Speaker 1: comfy again.
- 0:36Speaker 2: She really did. I thought she played a really solid game.
- 0:42Speaker 2: You know, she hadn't been shooting the ball grade, so
- 0:47Speaker 2: for her to make it for those was really really Also,
- 0:54Speaker 2: it's not just her, but it's also Jenna and some
- 0:57Speaker 2: of our other players as well. I think we've got
- 1:02Speaker 2: to continue to make them understand it. They can't put
- 1:07Speaker 2: themselves in, you know, on the bench with fouls. We
- 1:11Speaker 2: just don't have the luxury of being able to do that.
- 1:14Speaker 2: So that was probably the only negative because there were
- 1:20Speaker 2: a lot of really really great health defens you know,
- 1:25Speaker 2: defensive plays. Her health defense was was really really good.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And I think the more, you know, the more these
- 1:36Speaker 2: kids play together, the more time they spend on the floor,
- 1:40Speaker 2: both practice and games, We're going to see them, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 2: do some really really nice things as we go on.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah, speaking of Jenna, she had a big second chance
- 1:50Speaker 1: hoop late fourth quarter of basically give you guys back
- 1:54Speaker 1: to double digits. But there was like a four minute
- 1:56Speaker 1: stretch where neither team scored. The lead was eight. You've
- 2:00Speaker 1: finally call the time out and I guess you got
- 2:03Speaker 1: the shot that you want. And I don't exactly recall
- 2:05Speaker 1: who shot it, probably Paige, but see Jenna get the
- 2:08Speaker 1: rebound and the putback. That just seemed to settle things
- 2:10Speaker 1: down a little bit. Then Paige finished it off with
- 2:13Speaker 1: a couple of hoops.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Jenna. Yeah, Penna's a you know, she's a big she's
- 2:19Speaker 2: a big presidence in there. Man. You know, she's she's
- 2:22Speaker 2: active and she's aggressive. She wants to mix it up
- 2:28Speaker 2: once to get involved, can finish around the basket with
- 2:33Speaker 2: both hands, you know, you know, We talked yesterday, she
- 2:40Speaker 2: and I and we said, it's only been three games.
- 2:43Speaker 2: She's only played three games in their career, and uh,
- 2:48Speaker 2: there's gonna be some growing pains. Uh. And right now,
- 2:52Speaker 2: you know, some of the fouls are are part of that.
- 2:56Speaker 2: You know, they're a direct result of that. So as
- 3:00Speaker 2: I said with Ice, you know, the more time she
- 3:02Speaker 2: spends on the floor, the more time she's in practice
- 3:06Speaker 2: with this group, the better she's going to get. And
- 3:09Speaker 2: I I like, I like her future. She's got a
- 3:14Speaker 2: tremendous upside. And you know her and Sarah are going
- 3:19Speaker 2: to be together for four years. Uh, Jenna and Isaac,
- 3:23Speaker 2: you know, and Sarah are going to be together for
- 3:25Speaker 2: three years. So these these guys are going to start
- 3:28Speaker 2: building some some really good chemistry together and it'll it'll
- 3:32Speaker 2: be it'll be quite a it'll it'll be quite a
- 3:40Speaker 2: sight when they're they're all experienced enough, which will come,
- 3:46Speaker 2: which will come?
- 3:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, uhs first half of the game Friday night,
- 3:51Speaker 1: man a man North Carolina, they just could not stop you.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And then you build a lead of twenty. Then they
- 3:57Speaker 1: go zone and shot start don't start falling. Things change
- 4:02Speaker 1: a little bit and Carolina gets it to within a
- 4:05Speaker 1: Were you a little concerned or was it just the
- 4:07Speaker 1: offense just getting stagnant and just dealing with the zone defense.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, two things can happen, right, I mean a team
- 4:18Speaker 2: changes defenses and you you still get good shots and
- 4:25Speaker 2: they don't go in, and you just keep getting those
- 4:30Speaker 2: same shots and you got to knock them in. And
- 4:35Speaker 2: we didn't do that. You know, shooters that normally make
- 4:38Speaker 2: shots for us didn't make any, including Page when you know,
- 4:45Speaker 2: when cold for a little bit, and that's where you
- 4:49Speaker 2: need some size and you need some rebounding, You need
- 4:52Speaker 2: some you know, somebody that bail you out on some
- 4:55Speaker 2: of those possessions. But the real problem came that when
- 4:59Speaker 2: we stopped scoring, our defense got worse. Yeah, so instead
- 5:04Speaker 2: of you know, instead of us playing better defense because
- 5:07Speaker 2: we weren't scoring, you know, they were able to get
- 5:10Speaker 2: out there and get some momentum with their offense because
- 5:15Speaker 2: of you know, how poorly we how many mistakes we
- 5:19Speaker 2: made defending them. So, yeah, it was a great learning experience.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I told the team, I said, look, if we had
- 5:27Speaker 2: gone from up twenty to up thirty five, I'm not
- 5:29Speaker 2: sure we would have learned as much as we learned
- 5:32Speaker 2: by having to you know, kind of manage the game
- 5:36Speaker 2: and then take the place we had to make down
- 5:41Speaker 2: the stretch.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Is that just based on the group that you have
- 5:44Speaker 1: right now, just being younger than that, say, you know
- 5:47Speaker 1: the page Aliyah Nike ad trio that you had last season.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's a little bit different. But if
- 5:54Speaker 2: you remember at the beginning of last season, it didn't
- 5:57Speaker 2: look so great, right right, you know, you know it's uh,
- 6:04Speaker 2: it's always a it's always a toss up at in
- 6:08Speaker 2: the beginning of the season what you're going to get,
- 6:11Speaker 2: you know, what it's going to look like, and it
- 6:16Speaker 2: it's going to vary. Now, we just have so many,
- 6:22Speaker 2: so many young players. I mean we have five we
- 6:26Speaker 2: have five players here out of our ten that are
- 6:32Speaker 2: eligible to play. We have five players that have never
- 6:34Speaker 2: played at Yukon. Yeah. Yeah, And you know we put
- 6:38Speaker 2: different lineups out there now, so we got you know,
- 6:42Speaker 2: we got some great lineups, we got some mediocre lineups.
- 6:45Speaker 2: We've got some lineups that just don't work. But when
- 6:47Speaker 2: you're in when when you're in a foul situation, now
- 6:50Speaker 2: you're going to end up with some funny lineups out there,
- 6:53Speaker 2: and uh, it's not always going to be pretty well.
- 6:58Speaker 1: That's a good thing about early season. You get to it,
- 7:00Speaker 1: experiment more with Gino on the Women's Basketball Coaches Shows.
- 7:03Speaker 1: We continue here on a Monday night, here on Liarfield
- 7:05Speaker 1: to stay with us
