- 0:16Welcome to PCR Sports. Good evening and welcome to the
- 0:20PCR Sports Show here on PCR FM for the start of another
- 0:25sporting weekend. I'm Nilesh, and as always on our
- 0:29show every Friday between 6:00 and 7:00.
- 0:32We'll bring you the latest sporting headlines very shortly
- 0:35from in and around our city of Peterborough.
- 0:39Our guests on the show tonight are AD Moles and Stuart George,
- 0:43and they've been integral in leading a committee to build a
- 0:48statue in memory of Peterborough United legend Tommy Robson.
- 0:52And we'll be chatting to shortly to them both about the
- 0:57endeavours they've been going through over the last what, 4/4
- 1:00and 1/2 years since Tommy sadly passed away.
- 1:04But first, let me just cover off your sporting headlines for you
- 1:07this week and we'll start with a bit of ice hockey.
- 1:10And Peterborough Phantoms have qualification for the semi
- 1:13finals of the National League Cup in their own hands.
- 1:17The City side defeated Bristol Pitbulls 6 two in a crucial
- 1:21combined league and cup clash at Planet Ice on Sunday and two
- 1:25more wins in the qualification stages would guarantee them a
- 1:29top four finish. The first of those games is on
- 1:32Saturday at bottom club Solway Sharks and the other is at home
- 1:37to inform Sheffield Steel Dogs on Saturday December the 6th,
- 1:41which also marks the return of this to the city of legendary
- 1:45Phantoms coach Slava Kulikov. Phantoms won the cup in 2023
- 1:50under Kulikov's leadership. Phantoms also picked up a point
- 1:54from a penalty shootout loss in Bristol on Saturday after a 5
- 1:58five draw. A three-point weekend lifted
- 2:02Ashley Tate's men up a place to 5th in the league standings.
- 2:07Phantoms are sixth in the cup standings but have games in hand
- 2:10on all the teams above them bar Sheffield, MK Lightning and
- 2:14Hull. Seahawks have finished their
- 2:16qualification program. Phantoms will spend next weekend
- 2:19in Scotland as they play Solway in a pure league game on Sunday.
- 2:26In a little bit of football news and Peterborough Sports will
- 2:29attack the toughest task in National League football with
- 2:32confidence on Saturday. Sports are at leaders South
- 2:35Shields but they travel N on the back of two home wins in a row
- 2:40which have lifted the City side out of the relegation zone.
- 2:43Luka Miller struck twice after Sam Strong Brown had opened the
- 2:47scoring in A31 win over Bedford Town at Pyms Park on Tuesday
- 2:51evening. Sports boss Phil Brown admits
- 2:55his side are not yet out of trouble, but he has praised them
- 2:57for their attitude and quality over the last two games in
- 3:03cricket. Yes, cricket during the heart of
- 3:05winter and it's indoor cricket. Afford Park and AK11 are the two
- 3:10teams tied at the top after week two of the Hunts Indoor League.
- 3:14But it is AK11 who are top after they have taken more opposition
- 3:18wickets from their first two matches of the season.
- 3:22The current champions AK and the 20/23/24 champions Ufford Park
- 3:27have had a great start to the season and continued that again
- 3:30with convincing wins In the latest round of matches.
- 3:34AK stay top with a convincing 85 run win over Wansford and Ufford
- 3:40Park's 100% record continued after a 41 run win over 10 times
- 3:45Hunts Indoor League champions Breton Burley Park vented that
- 3:50it Hunts Indoor League for the first time in their history and
- 3:53after a defeat in their first match, they're off the mark at
- 3:57the second attempt with a full wicket win against Hampton.
- 4:01And we'll finish with a little bit of field hockey.
- 4:04And it was a rare bleak weekend for City of Peterborough as the
- 4:08men's and ladies first teams both tasted defeat.
- 4:11I'll discipline haunted the men as they were beaten 3 one at
- 4:14National Midlands Conference bottom club University of
- 4:18Birmingham second. On Sunday.
- 4:20The students were registering their first win of the season.
- 4:23The hosts were three nil down in 47 minutes after suffering 3
- 4:28separate yellow cards. At one point they were playing
- 4:31with 9 men because of multiple occupation of the sin Bin City
- 4:35are still a creditable 5th at the halfway stage of the season.
- 4:39They entertain a sixth placed Banbury at Bretton Gate next
- 4:42Sunday in a 2:00 PM push back, which is the last of the games
- 4:46before the Christmas break. City Ladies also lost for the
- 4:50first time in East Division 121 at 4th placed Sudbury, but they
- 4:55remain top on goal difference. It's another big game for City
- 4:59on Saturday though when third placed Norwich Dragons visit
- 5:03Bretton Gate in a 1:00 PM push back.
- 5:05The Dragons are just one point behind City.
- 5:09And those are just some of your sporting headlines this week in
- 5:12Peterborough. Well, thank you for your time
- 5:15once again. This evening you are listening
- 5:17to the PCR Sports Show here on PCR FM and we're going to be
- 5:20talking to AD Moles and Stuart George, who are two members of
- 5:25the Tommy Robinson Statute Committee.
- 5:28AD I'll bring you in straight away before we go on to talk
- 5:31about Tommy, his life and the statue that you're integral to.
- 5:36Quick chat about Peterbilt United going well under Luke
- 5:40Williams. Going very well under Luke.
- 5:41Yes indeed. Bit of a hiccup the other night.
- 5:46I think he probably in hindsight, which is a perfect
- 5:49sign, probably missed a trick. Think Garbet should have started
- 5:53and his quality beyond anything else we've got, but Stevenage
- 5:58came and did a job on us and you've got to respect that.
- 6:01As as horrible as it was to watch, I'm pretty confident that
- 6:05we we've turned a genuine corner and that corner we can carry on
- 6:10driving round or whatever expression you want to use
- 6:12tomorrow at Doncaster. Who are really, really, really
- 6:16struggling in the last 7-8, nine weeks.
- 6:18So yeah, onwards and upwards. I'm pretty, pretty confident.
- 6:21Yeah, it was. It's great start under Luke
- 6:23Williams, his tenure in terms of the results we've certainly had,
- 6:26but also those performances. You know, we think of the
- 6:28Cardiff, Wimbledon, two different performances but both
- 6:33positive results. Absolutely.
- 6:35It's it's not just getting results, it's about performances
- 6:39as well. And if you scrape one, you're
- 6:40always worried that if you don't get that luck back you're not
- 6:43going to win a game. But to beat the then league
- 6:46leaders 3 nil with relative ease.
- 6:51Talking about Stockport, it was a bit of a disappointment not to
- 6:54do the same to Stevenage, but if you'd said you're going to get 3
- 6:58points out of the six, you probably would have been quite
- 7:00happy with that before the fixture.
- 7:03And a large following making its way up the A1 tomorrow to back
- 7:07Peterbury United. Yeah, nice easy trip, great away
- 7:09day, some great, great pubs you. Wouldn't know about them though,
- 7:13would you? No, no.
- 7:13No, I only know about a dozen of them.
- 7:17Yeah, I think there's up to 2000 going up there.
- 7:19I don't know if you can pay on the day or not, but I think once
- 7:22you get there, they're not going to turn you away.
- 7:24We're all said and done. And once you've done that
- 7:26horrendous journey from the town centre to the to the stadium,
- 7:30you deserve to get in. So yeah, 2000 going out there
- 7:32would be a great be a great day. Yeah, and fingers crossed to get
- 7:35back to winning ways tomorrow. Yeah, we we really need to
- 7:38because it's a bit perverse when one minute you say it's about
- 7:42performances and results. But let's get some results
- 7:45against the teams down near the bottom of which Doncaster will
- 7:48won and then get the performances against the better
- 7:50sides where we might get something out of that we don't
- 7:52expect. So we've got a few of the lower
- 7:55teams in the next 5 or 6 weeks, so very important, yeah.
- 7:59You'd always say league is, you know, the the primary
- 8:02competition so far, but two cup games next week and a chance to
- 8:05progress certainly in the the trophy game away at Swindon.
- 8:08Yeah, it won't be easy. Swindon are pretty much top of
- 8:11the Division 2. Not an easy place to go to.
- 8:15Not a nice place to go to either, particularly Barnsley at
- 8:19home is a winnable tie. You're at home, that's all you
- 8:22ask in the cup. Be nice.
- 8:24Just do the second round, get it out of the way, get in the
- 8:26third, get a mega draw, get out. Concentrate on, well, not even
- 8:31on the league, concentrate on getting up that division.
- 8:35And those Christmas fixtures which will come thick and fast
- 8:37at the back end of December. Yeah, busy Christmas.
- 8:40Not an easy Christmas either, to be fair.
- 8:42Busy Christmas, not a time of year that we generally.
- 8:47So let's just hope that Luke can keep the good one going.
- 8:50Indeed. Brilliant.
- 8:51Thanks, AD. And that was a little catch up
- 8:53with AD moles there. Just talking all about
- 8:55Peterborough United and their resurgence now under the tenure
- 8:59of Luke Williams, right. I was going to take a short
- 9:02break and we'll be back with AD and Stuart George as we talk all
- 9:05about Tommy Robson. Welcome back.
- 9:09You are listening to the PCR Sports Show here on PCR FM for
- 9:13the start of your sporting weekend.
- 9:16Thank you for joining us. We're here every Friday between
- 9:186:00 and 7:00, bringing you the latest from the sporting scene
- 9:22in our city of Peterborough. Tonight is no different.
- 9:26We're going to be talking all about a Peterborough United
- 9:29legend. Tommy Robson suddenly passed
- 9:31away in October 2020. And in the studio with me this
- 9:36evening, I've got AD Moles and Stuart George who are part of
- 9:40the committee leading the charge to build a statue in memory of
- 9:45the posh legend himself. AD I'll bring you in straight
- 9:50away. This is quite a crusade you're
- 9:53on at the moment, isn't it? Yes, it's a crusade that seems
- 9:57to have taken a very long time, which it has.
- 10:00It's over 5 years as you just said.
- 10:03And and initially a group, a few of us got together to get him
- 10:05some facilities at home because he got the diagnosis of motor
- 10:12neurone disease, which as he said at the time is annoying.
- 10:17They were his words to me. But it is an incredibly serious
- 10:20illness and it's incurable. And so we, we were looking at
- 10:23just getting like a ramp at home and stuff like that.
- 10:26And then obviously it kicked on. And he'd, he'd said not long
- 10:29before we'd, we'd started the Chris Turner statue thing.
- 10:33He'd said not long after that. It's surely he should be the
- 10:37first person commemorated with a statue because he'd played a lot
- 10:42more games than Chris at Posh. Well, Tommy record appearance
- 10:45Holder 559. Exactly.
- 10:48And that will never be beaten by anybody.
- 10:51And also he was a lot smaller than Chris and surely it would
- 10:53cost a lot less in bronze. So I had to put him right on
- 10:57that one. And it wasn't perhaps the answer
- 10:59he wanted, but yeah. And he was massive during the
- 11:02the Chris Turner, the CT 5 campaign, as we called it, to
- 11:05get Chris home. He was massive in that.
- 11:08Tommy was a great support in that.
- 11:09So so. You know, we'll talk about the
- 11:12fundraising that, that you've LED with the committee.
- 11:15We'll talk about his, you know, his, his life away from football
- 11:18as well with, with Stuart this evening.
- 11:20But you certainly knew him as a footballer and growing up and
- 11:25understanding the influence that he had on Peterborough United.
- 11:29Yeah, yeah, Massive. I mean, when I started, he was,
- 11:31he'd been here for probably 5 or 6 years and he was just the most
- 11:36integral part of that football team.
- 11:39Obviously, you know, Chris was an absolute legend at the back,
- 11:42but Chris relatively was a baby still.
- 11:44Yeah. He hadn't even got in the first
- 11:45team at the time. And Tommy was everything.
- 11:48Tommy was a Falcon at that football side.
- 11:51He was an out and out left winger.
- 11:53You don't see them nowadays. He literally would have chalk on
- 11:56his boots and would not come off that wing for love and the
- 12:00money. And Jim Hall was was a recipient
- 12:04of the most inaccurate crosses time after time after time.
- 12:10And Tommy had many, many skills, one of which was if he was did
- 12:13come from the inside the wing and was was fouled in the centre
- 12:16circle, we'd get a penalty out of it.
- 12:18You've just taken the words out of my mouth, you're saying about
- 12:20him hugging the touchline, shall we say?
- 12:23But certainly when he was inside that 18 yard box, he came alive,
- 12:28shall we say? He did come alive and and he'd
- 12:30many, he'd dribbled into that 18 yard box knowing that he had the
- 12:34skill to meet the players and if they blocked him in any way
- 12:36whatsoever, he was down and we got a penalty.
- 12:38But I swear I saw it on the halfway line.
- 12:42He just, and he had sort of relatively angelic face and
- 12:46would, would look up at the ref, you know, begging and the ref
- 12:49would give it their fright and centre and then realise he'd
- 12:51been done again. So yeah.
- 12:53Well, Tommy joined the Posh in 1968. 559 appearances, 128
- 13:00goals. Only teammate Jim Hall managed
- 13:03more. And no doubt Tommy created many
- 13:06of Jim Hall's goals. Yeah, Jim Hall would just make a
- 13:10run off the shoulder, Tommy would see it, and that ball
- 13:13would just turn up. And that's not a ball like they
- 13:15play with nowadays, which you could Chuck if you wanted.
- 13:18You know, that's a proper old fashioned football laces,
- 13:21etcetera, etcetera. Heavy.
- 13:23Big, heavy pitchers were absolutely woeful.
- 13:26I don't think people realise now until they look back on old
- 13:29YouTube footage quite how horrendous those pictures were.
- 13:34And he would just get it, he would get the ball in there and
- 13:36he, he, you, you cannot exaggerate how good he was.
- 13:39He really, really was such a fantastic footballer.
- 13:42You've got some wonderful memories of him as a a
- 13:44footballer, but Stuart Tommy was also known wider in the city for
- 13:50his charitable work, for his business and he was a personal
- 13:55friend of yours. Yeah, I, I followed him as a, as
- 13:58a footballer as well. I was a season ticket holder on
- 14:01Glebe Rd. when I was 12. I was mascot as well.
- 14:06So I did meet him personally, although he doesn't remember it
- 14:08obviously when I was mascot against Northampton Town in the
- 14:13late 70s. And you go in the changing room
- 14:15before the game, you get introduced to the players and,
- 14:17and the autographs. But then followed him for a few
- 14:20more years from, from the Glebe Rd. and as Eddie says, he was
- 14:23very close to me because in that Glebe roadside he was hugging
- 14:26that touchline. So he was literally 10 foot away
- 14:28from me. And he really did just hug that
- 14:31touchline, didn't he, Aidy? And then obviously sort of
- 14:35through work career, I moved away, worked in Huntingdon for
- 14:39many years, so didn't really have any contact with him at
- 14:42all. I didn't know him personally.
- 14:43And then accidentally I was running the Peugeot dealership
- 14:47for Marshalls in Peterborough and one day the receptorist came
- 14:53through. So there's a Mr. Robson to see
- 14:55he was working for the. Peterborough Herald.
- 14:57Harrington Post newspaper. And he ran the motoring section
- 15:02and the estate agency section from memory.
- 15:06And he when they said it was Tommy, obviously I sat up in my
- 15:12seat and because this guy I'd watched all my young football in
- 15:16days was sitting in front of me and we never discussed selling
- 15:20me an advert at all. We sat there for about 3 hours
- 15:23with me effectively interviewing him all about football because
- 15:26that's what I do. Starstruck.
- 15:28Yeah, I was, yeah. And he went out and forgot that
- 15:32he's meant to be there to, to, to sell me.
- 15:34That's just genuinely the case. And that was the start of, of,
- 15:38of a relationship that we had from a business perspective and,
- 15:42and ended up becoming friends effectively.
- 15:45And we started to socialize together.
- 15:47And then later on he, I employed him when he was coming towards
- 15:52the end of his working career, he joined us as a driver where
- 15:56we were collecting cars. And then the next step, I
- 15:59started my own business. And then he came to work for me
- 16:02at my business. And then it developed even
- 16:05further, went on holiday together.
- 16:08He became a firm family friend. My two kids adored him and sorry
- 16:12I'm going to have a lump him or. No, I know that's.
- 16:14Really understandable, yeah. He was a great family friend
- 16:17and, yeah, top bloke, yeah. Yeah, ADI mean, you know, you've
- 16:20talked about his footballing career there.
- 16:22You've just heard what Stuart said about Tommy.
- 16:24I mean, he was a man of the. People He really, really was.
- 16:27I remember a genuine incident. I met him at Cathedral Square
- 16:31for whatever event it was we were doing for something
- 16:34together in the Cathedral Square and we were going to walk back
- 16:37to the ground and it was just impossible.
- 16:40It it wasn't people at the event that kept him, it was every
- 16:44single person that he saw on Bridge St.
- 16:48We took bearing in mind in those days it wasn't pedestrianised.
- 16:51Cars would just stop and just get out and say hi.
- 16:54Tommy it, it was ridiculous. And now it'll be selfies,
- 16:58wouldn't it? He was a great person to work
- 17:00for you because he'd work, he'd work for me on the on the site
- 17:05one particular day if I was going away buying cars and we'd
- 17:08have 20 or 30 customers come in and every single one knew him.
- 17:12And because everyone knew him, he attracted people to to buy
- 17:16cars. I'm genuinely, it genuinely
- 17:19works. Yeah.
- 17:19So it's great. Well, both of you are on the
- 17:22Tommy Robson statue committee, leading this crusade to build a
- 17:25statue in his memory AD that would be quite an honour for the
- 17:30man. Absolutely and a well deserved 1
- 17:33and and we're calling it bringing Tommy home and we know
- 17:36he's not a beatable boy born and bred, but you know, a lot, a lot
- 17:39of people aren't, are big in this city.
- 17:43But he's been with us longer than anybody else.
- 17:46And, you know, when he left the football club as a player, he
- 17:49was a coach, he ran the youth team, He's done charity work
- 17:53alongside the football club for decades.
- 17:56He's just done so many different things.
- 17:59And like I say, we called it bringing Tommy home.
- 18:02And that's how it feels to us, you know, as much as it did with
- 18:06Chris. And they were really, really
- 18:07close friends as well. So to get them there together at
- 18:11the old ground before, who knows, if ever one day we leave
- 18:14that ground, who knows We've got them both at home for a period
- 18:17of time and that's going to be fantastic.
- 18:19You just mentioned there, you know, man of the people, for
- 18:22example, I mean Tommy was quoted back in spring 2020 to say that
- 18:29Peterborough has been my life for more than 50 years and that
- 18:32was when the he was honoured with the freedom of the city,
- 18:37Peterborough's highest honour. I mean that that says everything
- 18:40about the man, not just from a footballing perspective but what
- 18:42he was known for in the city. Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:44And it was a shame at that time, you know, it was middle of
- 18:47lockdown etcetera. He wasn't very well and all
- 18:50these that you know could have been done earlier.
- 18:52I'm not not people in the actual honour because it is an
- 18:55incredible honour and he deserved it.
- 18:57But sadly at those times, everything was was not the way
- 19:01it should have been and it wasn't as we would wanted it to
- 19:04have been. And obviously when he became
- 19:06seriously ill, nobody could go and see him.
- 19:08I saw him when he was first poorly went to see him quite a
- 19:11lot. And the downhill slope was
- 19:14horrendously upsetting, really was.
- 19:17But yeah, to have that honour well deserved.
- 19:20And as as they said at the time, and Councillor John Fox at the
- 19:24time, I think was was integral in getting in the award.
- 19:27And they knew each other very well.
- 19:29And, you know, he said some very kind things about Tommy that
- 19:32that that we all knew. And, yeah.
- 19:34And and the word legend, to be a legend in a sport is amazing,
- 19:38however local that may be. To be a legend in a city for
- 19:43more than one thing is a very rare thing, certainly in this
- 19:47city. So yeah, I think it's that's why
- 19:50it's been, although it's taken a long time, that's no reflection
- 19:54of Tommy. The time has been taken because
- 19:56of circumstances. Out of the.
- 19:58Control of the committee. The Tommy, the the Chris Turner
- 20:02thing was very much easier. Cash was king in those days and
- 20:06etcetera, etcetera. But this has made it just as
- 20:09worthwhile for it being so much hard work and an awful lot of
- 20:14people outside the football world have contributed to
- 20:17towards the fund, which is pleasing.
- 20:20Wonderful. And we'll hear a little bit
- 20:21about that from Stuart just after these messages.
- 20:25Good evening and welcome back to the PCR Sports Show here on PCR
- 20:29FM Thank you for joining us this evening.
- 20:32If you have missed any of the show, you can listen back to us
- 20:35again via the website whichispcrfm.co.uk and just hit
- 20:41the listen again button tonight. We're talking all about the
- 20:45legend Tommy Robson, Peterborough United player for
- 20:49many a year, 559 appearances, 128 goals.
- 20:54But he was more than just a footballer in this city, he was
- 20:57also very integral in the business world and created many
- 21:01a friendship, one of which was with Stuart George, who's in the
- 21:04studio with us this evening and part of the committee formed and
- 21:10helping to fundraise for the statue in memory of the posh
- 21:15legend. He meant a lot to you, Stuart,
- 21:19and now you're part of the committee to help build this
- 21:22statue in his memory and you've been putting on some fundraising
- 21:25events. But on a personal note, how does
- 21:27it feel to be part of something that'll honour the great man
- 21:31himself? Amazing.
- 21:34I mean, obviously I, I, I decided I wanted to do some
- 21:37fundraising myself when I heard AD was setting up a committee
- 21:42and, and going to try and raise money for the statute.
- 21:44And then obviously AD kindly invited me to sort of join the
- 21:48task force as such. And we've had, I've had three
- 21:52disco nights over the last couple of years and we've held
- 21:58him at the Parkway Sports and Social Club in Peterborough with
- 22:01quite a large capacity. It holds of 300 people.
- 22:04And we've managed to sell out on all three so far or virtually
- 22:07sell out on all three. And then last year with Steve
- 22:12Collins, the ex Posh player was also a good friend of ours, We
- 22:17organized APW United reunion at Stanford Football Club.
- 22:21So those four events so far have raised a reasonable sum of
- 22:25money. I'm not sure exactly how much
- 22:26about. £18,000 I will say that's Stuart because that's, you know,
- 22:31one head of an effort that you've LED.
- 22:33And we've also got another one planned on the 28th of February
- 22:38next year. Well, we're running the the
- 22:41successful formula that we've done over the last three and
- 22:44hoping that we will raise another large sum of money
- 22:46again. So yeah, looking forward to it.
- 22:48But yeah, it's, it's, it's great to be part of the team.
- 22:51Everyone obviously contributes. It's not just me that everyone
- 22:54has pulled their weight and done their bit.
- 22:56So yeah, I can't wait to get to the end now.
- 22:59I know in that moment when when Tommy is unveiled, it'll be a
- 23:03proud moment for just a committee in this city as well.
- 23:05But there's a little bit of work to go before we get to that
- 23:09stage, though fundraising is going well.
- 23:13It's been going very well and it's been going well for quite a
- 23:16long time as as we referred referred to earlier on.
- 23:20But we can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.
- 23:23So we, we think it's very difficult to be exact, but we
- 23:26think we need around about 140K all together and we're on about
- 23:30115 at the moment. We have already commissioned the
- 23:33sculptor, A lad called Shawn Hedges Quinn who who is an
- 23:38amazing artist. He did Chris and I think
- 23:41everybody's absolutely delighted what he did with Chris.
- 23:44He's done many sporting statues all over the country for massive
- 23:49clubs and he's actual doing the magic massive project soon for
- 23:53the FA at Wembley. But he's very kindly squeezing,
- 23:56squeezing us in where we can and touch word, fingers crossed,
- 24:01etcetera, etcetera. Early new year we should be able
- 24:05to go over and see him at his workshop and see the semi
- 24:11finished project product, make any changes that need to be made
- 24:15And then a few months after that he'll go down to be bronzed and
- 24:20then the stuff gets real. And in the meantime, there's
- 24:24also a lot of expenditure going to come up about.
- 24:26Fundraising has to continue. Just because he's been
- 24:28commissioned. There is still an urgency, a
- 24:30need to make sure the fundraising continues over the
- 24:33next 12 months effectively. Absolutely.
- 24:35Without going into every single thing, it's Groundworks.
- 24:38You've got to get those sussed out.
- 24:39You have to get in layman's terms, an X-ray machine on top
- 24:43of that land to see that it can take the plinth etcetera, work
- 24:47out exactly where he's going to go in relation to to the
- 24:50football ground and where he's going to be.
- 24:52We want him home. We've got an idea where we want
- 24:55him. Chris is in a fantastic
- 24:57position. The position we're thinking of
- 24:59is just as good. It would be amazing.
- 25:01Then you've got all lighting architect plans, groundworks for
- 25:06the for the plinth itself. I mean, there's.
- 25:09Ongoing maintenance. Ongoing maintenance which
- 25:11obviously we find with Chris every so often we need to find a
- 25:14bit more money. Absolutely determined we will
- 25:18get there and and fully certain that we will get there because
- 25:21the goodwill is there. One of the biggest goodwill
- 25:24things of all is a part of the whole fundraising has been ATR
- 25:3011 we've called it, where I think it's 60 odd.
- 25:33Maybe 70 people have joined that way back when, maybe you said
- 25:382020, probably not long after that and have made a commitment
- 25:42of paying £11.00 per month, which doesn't sound a lot, but
- 25:46for five years is a great commitment and that is a massive
- 25:50amount of the fundraising. Yeah, we're around £36,000.
- 25:55There you go, you know. That's a huge, that's a huge
- 25:58commitment. From those individuals,
- 25:59incidentally, examples of Sean's work can be seen on our Facebook
- 26:03page because we've got a Tommy Robson statue Facebook page.
- 26:06So if anyone wants to have a look at the type of work he's
- 26:09done, he's done. What's Bobby Robson, Bob Stoko,
- 26:13Kevin Beatty. So yeah, some real good ones.
- 26:16Yeah, Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:18And, and Sean's really keen on this.
- 26:19We had a great experience working with Sean when we did
- 26:22Chris, and soon as I put him up for this, he was absolutely
- 26:26Jocca busy and just said there's no way I can squeeze it in.
- 26:30And two minutes later, while we chatted about how good the Chris
- 26:32thing was, he went all right, all right.
- 26:34So, you know, he's finding us a space where we can, which is
- 26:38brilliant because he is the best of the best.
- 26:39Sounds like you sold it to him maybe?
- 26:41I well, yeah, I did send it to him and fluttered my eyelashes
- 26:45and what have you. But yeah, we've got the best of
- 26:48the best. We've got a fantastic committee
- 26:49and and some of the support from around the city has been
- 26:53absolutely amazing. Really is too many names to
- 26:56mention as such, but people have put on their own functions.
- 27:01So Steph, Papa Luigi, for example, he's put on a few
- 27:06Northern Soul nights in particular and funk and soul
- 27:09nights and everything at the same venue as Stuart uses, which
- 27:13is a fantastic venue and donated all the money to that as well.
- 27:17So there's, there's been some amazing support and literally
- 27:21you can go back to to being a bit romantic about it all, but
- 27:24literally kids emptying their their pocket money and stuff
- 27:27like that. Edwin Overland as well, didn't.
- 27:29We Edwin Overland very kindly. He was a big friend of Tommy.
- 27:32'S big friend of Tommy's. And when he was very poorly, he
- 27:36got in touch effectively himself via his via his sister at the
- 27:40time and said that he changed, actually changed his will from
- 27:43donating the money that had been raised from a project that he
- 27:47did previous to him passing away.
- 27:51Donated it to Tommy instead of to where it was going to go,
- 27:54which was like an incredible thing.
- 27:56He used to do commentary with Tommy.
- 27:57Yes, he did. Yeah, they went back a very long
- 27:59way. Just one of many Tommy's great
- 28:02fun. Yeah, you know the relationships
- 28:03that he had. He was also a Co commentator for
- 28:06for PGB United games as well which you know just shows what
- 28:10he was involved with in different.
- 28:12Concepts. He loved doing the commentary.
- 28:14He really did, yeah. Yeah, and from a fundraising
- 28:17perspective, you've talked about, you know, the the music
- 28:20events that have been put on, for example, the TR11 scheme
- 28:23that's running. And I'm sure you're very
- 28:25grateful too for that commitment from those members.
- 28:29But the Shed, for example, the new tap room and deli down at
- 28:33Fletton Keys, they've they named a tipple after him as well.
- 28:37They. Did Tommy's Tipple, which was
- 28:39about a year ago, went really, really well and Dave did tell me
- 28:43the other day that they had, they want to go and do that
- 28:45soon. So they'll have a whole month of
- 28:48Tommy Tipple events, as it were, and they get some amazing
- 28:51attendances from their Thursday, Friday, Saturday, music nights
- 28:55and all day on a Sunday. So that should boost things as
- 28:58well. There are lots of little, little
- 29:02things planned. I don't know if we want to go
- 29:05into the thing we've got planned next May, which we I'm being
- 29:09told no at the moment, but I'm sure that will will allow us to
- 29:12do that at a later stage. But there is one big event that
- 29:16we would like to do, maybe to put it all to bed.
- 29:18But in the meantime, if anybody's got any ideas and they
- 29:21would like to contribute, just run it by us.
- 29:23Not that we would say no, but just that we can give our full
- 29:26support via the website and via the Facebook page.
- 29:31Those social media access is always there if anybody wants to
- 29:35put anything on. If they've got any pictures of
- 29:37them with Tommy, we'll add them on to it.
- 29:39It's not a problem. Yeah, so just picking up all the
- 29:41pictures, Stuart, you were saying this week that you found
- 29:44a picture of Tommy when he played Chelsea.
- 29:46Well, I sort of help with the Facebook page and I'm trying to
- 29:52find some older photographs of Tom and I can find individual
- 29:55photographs of Tommy playing for Chelsea, but no team photos.
- 29:59And one of the reasons, I guess is you didn't spend that long at
- 30:02Chelsea because he was very poorly while he was there.
- 30:04But I wrote to Chelsea on Friday, I think it was last
- 30:08week, and they kindly wrote back yesterday or e-mail back
- 30:12yesterday, and they'd found one team photo that he was he was
- 30:17on. Yeah.
- 30:17Which they sent through. So yeah, very good.
- 30:19Yeah, very pleased. It's great.
- 30:20They also sent me a shirt last year when I did one of the
- 30:24discos. They sent me a Chelsea sent me a
- 30:26science shirt of all their current first team squad which
- 30:29we auctioned and obviously that helped raise some of the funds
- 30:31towards the evening, yeah. Yeah, and it's those
- 30:33relationships, you know, we've talked about Tommy from a
- 30:35Peterborough and a Peterborough United perspective, but you
- 30:38know, he was up at Newcastle United, Chelsea.
- 30:43He's got those relationships in other parts of the country as
- 30:45well, which have helped with the fundraising and raising the
- 30:50funds that are needed. Yeah, I mean, a new Chelsea
- 30:53always used to send him a hamper every Christmas, even though he
- 30:56only played a short period of time there.
- 30:58They used to send him a hamper every Christmas.
- 31:00They invited him to a game every year, every season.
- 31:03Sorry, with with a family member or friend, with with
- 31:05hospitality. Newcastle did the same as well.
- 31:09So yeah, I had a good relationship with everybody.
- 31:11Yeah, well, as everybody knows, you know, everybody loved him.
- 31:14He had a he had a such a nice, kind person.
- 31:17You could not like him. No, indeed.
- 31:20The. Posh Supporters Trust as well
- 31:22made a donation this week I was seeing on social media.
- 31:24The The Posh Supporters Trust had been absolutely amazing.
- 31:27So they'd already donated his 5000 lbs at the beginning of the
- 31:31project. And then two of their members
- 31:36had got together and seen Tommy before he passed away and
- 31:40obviously before he passed away, but before he was too seriously
- 31:43ill. And put a fantastic book
- 31:45together, which is still available, which will be on is
- 31:49on our website and also will be on the Facebook page.
- 31:51We'll put a link to that. And it was just basically a
- 31:55conversation with Tommy. So it wasn't, you know,
- 31:58autobiography as such. It was just a chat with Tommy
- 32:01about his life. He's gone through a lot of hell
- 32:05when he was when he was young with, with illness and then got
- 32:08through that to become a professional footballer.
- 32:10Just about every boy's dream. And it's a really, really good
- 32:14book. And then they've recently just
- 32:15donated another 5000 lbs from that, which is incredible.
- 32:20So the supporters Trust have always been good supporters of
- 32:23of this and CT 5 and obviously the club themselves, the club
- 32:26themselves that have put themselves out for us.
- 32:29Dara's been very generous, the Chairman taking us up to the to
- 32:35the mark that we wanted to be when we were struggling a little
- 32:37bit a few months ago or about 8 months ago.
- 32:40And they'll always move stuff around for us and allow us to
- 32:43hold functions, etcetera. So again, as Stuart said, just a
- 32:49a mark of how popular Tommy is. Yeah.
- 32:51And as much as you 2 are part of this committee, this is very
- 32:54much something that you're leading on to help build this
- 33:00statue for the people of Peterborough.
- 33:02Well, we used a cliche for the Chris, for the fans, by the
- 33:06fans. I would say this is even more
- 33:09for the city by the city because he was more than just Chris was
- 33:13as well. Don't get me wrong.
- 33:14Yeah, but Tommy, you know, really, really was a part of the
- 33:17city in such a massive part apart from the football.
- 33:21So his charity work alone is, it was just incredible and it was
- 33:26based around in and around football, you know.
- 33:29But yeah, you've raised thousands of pounds for the
- 33:31children's board at the former City Hospital, you know, through
- 33:33his Peterborough Legends football team example.
- 33:36Absolutely yeah and and that was you know something he did off
- 33:40his own back and then being Tommy came up with the idea and
- 33:42then went help. I need support and I know piece
- 33:45of 2000, we sponsored the shirt for about four or five years,
- 33:49which was a great thing to do, which we love to do.
- 33:51And and I and I think that the a slogan, if you like, is we're
- 33:57happy to lead this, but we're happy to be LED as well.
- 34:00So if anybody comes up with ideas, just tell us and and we
- 34:03will back it and we will support it.
- 34:05We'll attend it. We'll do whatever we can do.
- 34:08If it involves they want something to do with the
- 34:10football club, then we'll do that as well.
- 34:11So, you know, we can be that link between anything that
- 34:15anybody else can think of because we think we've we've
- 34:18battered our brains pretty much together to get every kind of
- 34:21function that we can think of together.
- 34:24And if there's a new one out there, then then you send it to
- 34:26us. Yeah, absolutely brilliant.
- 34:28Right, it's going to take another very short break and
- 34:30we'll be back with Stuart and AD after these messages.
- 34:34Good evening. Welcome back to the PCR Sports
- 34:36Show. If you have missed any of the
- 34:38show this evening, you can listen back to us via the PCR FM
- 34:42website whichispcrfm.co.uk and just hit the Listen again
- 34:47button. We've got Stuart George and Adie
- 34:51Moles in the studio with us this evening and we've been talking
- 34:55all about Tommy Robson, the great Peterborough United Legend
- 34:58record appearance holder at 559, 128 goals.
- 35:02But he was more than a football player for the club.
- 35:06He did many a good work in and around the city, including
- 35:10raising thousands of pounds for a children's ward at the citys
- 35:13former hospital through the Peterborough Legends football
- 35:17team that he formed a number of years ago.
- 35:21Sadly passed away in October 2020 and since then AD Moles and
- 35:26the Tommy Rodson Statute Committee have been on a mission
- 35:31to raise the money to build a statue in his honour to be
- 35:34erected at his home ground of Peterborough United.
- 35:38In due course. AD fundraising's going well.
- 35:43There's always a need for more that you've discussed thought
- 35:48process in terms of what do you think's left to raise?
- 35:52And perhaps not a a specific figure because we know things
- 35:56can change, but where would you like to get to?
- 35:59I'd I'd like to get to too much which, which you know, is too
- 36:02far away because there's an awful lot of good stuff that we
- 36:06could do with any extra. There'd always be ongoing
- 36:08maintenance. The club had been fantastic with
- 36:12Chris and I'm sure they would be no less fantastic with Tommy,
- 36:16but it would be nice for us to be able to to manage that side
- 36:20of things ourselves as well. So I think the 140 mark is more
- 36:27than doable. I think if we got anything above
- 36:29that then we would find A use for it and I think we've learnt
- 36:33a lot of lessons from Chris. So we we maybe went over the top
- 36:37with the lighting for example. It's too complicated.
- 36:40You only really need blue. We play in blue, we are blue,
- 36:44that's what we do. Why did we have all those
- 36:46different other colours at the time?
- 36:47It looked fantastic. It was donated for nothing.
- 36:50But as a lesson to be learnt, some of the ground works around
- 36:55in and around could have been better.
- 36:57We've learned that lesson and we've improved it at Chris as
- 36:59well. So yeah, that's nothing is as
- 37:02cheap as it was even 5-6 years ago when we did Chris.
- 37:06Everything is more, everything is more expensive.
- 37:10So, yeah, we are so grateful for everybody starting with, you
- 37:16know, TR 11 people who joined it on that first ever month at that
- 37:20opening night all those years ago in the library, in the
- 37:23museum, and Lynn as well. Wasn't that Lynn and Lynn, Lynn
- 37:26Turner, who made it an amazingly generous contribution from what
- 37:31we'd raised for the Chris Turner statue, What was left?
- 37:33She was more than happy to donate that money.
- 37:36So thank you. Good shout.
- 37:38She obviously was great friends with Tommy as well.
- 37:41So she's been a part of this from the very beginning.
- 37:45So, you know, we would like to call ourselves a family and
- 37:47everybody says that. And if the football club itself
- 37:49is our family, then obviously, you know, Tommy and Chris are
- 37:54our family too. And we want to make sure that we
- 37:56honour, we've already honoured Chris in the best way we
- 37:59possibly could and we'll do the same for Tommy.
- 38:02Stuart, you've got a fundraising event coming up in February.
- 38:06You've run many a successful one in the past 18 months or so, but
- 38:11another one coming up. Yeah, February the 28th,
- 38:14Peterborough Parkway Sports and Social Club.
- 38:16It's a great venue because it holds, you know, a large amount
- 38:20of people, which is quite difficult to get a big haul.
- 38:22So yeah, we've sold 167 tickets so far in the sort of first two
- 38:28weeks. So we're on track to sell out
- 38:30again. So tickets are obviously
- 38:33available for myself. We're advertising on social
- 38:36media, on the Facebook page, the Tommy Robson statue Facebook
- 38:39page, which if anyone's not a a follower of that, when I'd I'd
- 38:43urge you to. Lots of interesting information
- 38:46on Tom's career and all the latest events and functions that
- 38:50we've got going on are all advertised on there.
- 38:53And, you know, we'll have a number of events coming up in
- 38:55the new year as well, which will interest all different types of
- 38:58people, I'm sure. And also just sort of Tommy's
- 39:01background as well. For those younger fans that
- 39:04didn't know Tommy, you've done a lot of work in making sure that
- 39:08message gets out there. Yeah, I think sort of working
- 39:12with Tom for long hours and being a bit of a football freak,
- 39:17stroke Stato, you know, I learnt quite a lot.
- 39:21I mean, actual fact. I mean, I remember going to
- 39:23Whittlesey one night, I think it was for some Rotary Club and
- 39:27they'd asked him. It was his first, first time.
- 39:29I don't think he did many, but he did one of his first times
- 39:31he's after dinner speaking. So we had a meal and he, he
- 39:37started telling the stories and and I, I did actually think that
- 39:40either I could probably have stood up and done a better job
- 39:43because I'd heard these stories so many times.
- 39:45I think I could tell the story better than he could.
- 39:48You know, it was great. I mean, sometimes you tell me a
- 39:50story at work and you know, I'd heard it so many times that, you
- 39:54know, I knew I knew it better than him.
- 39:55So. So many anecdotes.
- 39:57Yeah, you've got him as well. We went Holly's a Cyprus and we
- 40:00went in a restaurant and you know he got talking to the
- 40:03people sitting the opposite side of the table.
- 40:04They found out he was a footballer and he moved his
- 40:06chair and sat with them and left me on me, on me own.
- 40:08You know, it was just everyone just fell in love with him.
- 40:11He was great. Brilliant, right?
- 40:13If you want to do find out more information about the campaign
- 40:17that's ongoing at the moment, you can go to the website which
- 40:19is the Tommy Robson statute.co.uk as Stuart has
- 40:25mentioned there. There is also a Facebook page
- 40:26and you'll find that underneath the Tommy Robson Statute, you'll
- 40:30find all the information there. There'll be contact details on
- 40:32there as well to get hold of the committee and share what you'd
- 40:36like to do to support getting Tommy back home to London Road
- 40:41and a statue in his honour. AD Thank you very much for your
- 40:46time this evening. Thank you for your background on
- 40:50Tommy, his footballing career. You know, we could talk about
- 40:53him for hours. I mean I've got so many notes,
- 40:55you know, we could spend hours talking about Tommy and his
- 40:57stories from a footballing perspective.
- 40:59And I know Stuart, you've had many a story of working with him
- 41:02professionally and personally as well.
- 41:04So wish you all the best. Do keep us informed and as
- 41:10events come on board, then do let us know.
- 41:12We'll give them a plug here on PCR Sports as well.
- 41:16Thank you very. Much time this evening.
- 41:18Thank you. Brilliant.
- 41:19Well, thank you for listening once again, thank you for your
- 41:21time. We'll be back next Friday
- 41:24evening here on the PCR Sports show at 6:00.
- 41:27But whatever your plans this weekend, whether you're
- 41:30travelling up to Doncaster to watch Peterborough United have a
- 41:34safe trip, whatever sport you're involved, whether you're
- 41:36volunteering, playing or spectating, we do wish you a
- 41:39very successful and winning weekend.
