- 0:06Speaker 2: He was talking to Fall and they are whizz So yeah,
- 0:10Speaker 2: it's too bad, but what did you expect.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's a podcast called twenty five Whist.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Souls Twyne, what's up? Everybody? Welcome to the show where
- 0:20Speaker 3: this one's gonna be cool because it's us with Steve
- 0:22Speaker 3: Young for an hour NFL Hall of Fame quarterback.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Uh.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Super nice guy. I met him, I guess a year
- 0:29Speaker 3: and a half maybe more than that now, met him
- 0:32Speaker 3: on a golf course and was nervous to go talk
- 0:33Speaker 3: to him and then want to talk to him and
- 0:35Speaker 3: he was like, oh, listen to your show and I
- 0:37Speaker 3: was like, yo, whatever, and then he like quoted back
- 0:39Speaker 3: a couple of segments and I was like, dang, that's crazy.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Then I was talking about him on the show one
- 0:45Speaker 3: day a year later as like one of the top
- 0:48Speaker 3: five coolest people I've ever met. He happened to be listening.
- 0:51Speaker 3: He texted me and I was like, how'd you get
- 0:54Speaker 3: my number? And he was like, I called the golf
- 0:56Speaker 3: course and I was like that's cool. So then we
- 0:59Speaker 3: went to Oregon, and since we were a west already,
- 1:02Speaker 3: I was like, Hey, we're going to be out there.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Will you be around and he said, yeah, come on.
- 1:05Speaker 3: So we went to his office and he was in
- 1:08Speaker 3: the middle of working with us, and then he was
- 1:10Speaker 3: going to do like a maybe like a Dallas Cowboys
- 1:12Speaker 3: documentary on the championships they won. But we had We
- 1:16Speaker 3: flew into Polo Alto and we're with him for an hour.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Longer than that. He signed my football card. It was
- 1:22Speaker 3: a whole thing. It was super awesome. So we're just
- 1:25Speaker 3: going to play the interview as is because it's it's
- 1:27Speaker 3: an hour, right guys, close close, yeah, close to an hour.
- 1:31Speaker 3: So here he is, I'll shut up. Here is one
- 1:33Speaker 3: of the greats of all time left handed. I say
- 1:36Speaker 3: that because him and Boomerasison were the only two left
- 1:39Speaker 3: handed quarterback, because I would ever watch and be like, dang,
- 1:41Speaker 3: that's why I'm a quarterback. But then I wasn't after
- 1:43Speaker 3: like fourth grade. All right, here he is Steve Young. First,
- 1:46Speaker 3: I'd like to explain how I ended up here. I
- 1:49Speaker 3: was playing a golf tournament I was invited to. It
- 1:51Speaker 3: was it was super cool.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I was h end but high end golf, but I
- 1:55Speaker 2: was excited to just be invited elite golf tournament and me.
- 2:00Speaker 3: And so there's like seven people on a green and
- 2:03Speaker 3: I see somebody holding court and all the people are
- 2:06Speaker 3: like laughing, ha ha haa. This guy's holding court and
- 2:09Speaker 3: there's like a little crease and I see it's Steve
- 2:11Speaker 3: Young in the crease and everybody is listening to every word,
- 2:14Speaker 3: every breath he's saying. And I'm like, I love Steve Young.
- 2:17Speaker 3: I'm left handed. When I was a kid, I would
- 2:19Speaker 3: watch you play and think this is the roots.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I'm leaning closer now, yeah, this is the root because
- 2:24Speaker 2: it's very rare.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I was a left handed quarterback rare, and I was like,
- 2:28Speaker 3: Steve Young, if he can do it, I realize that.
- 2:30Speaker 3: So I walk up and I get into the crowd
- 2:31Speaker 3: of people and they're all laughing. I don't know what
- 2:33Speaker 3: you're saying, but I'm like, everybody fades away, and I say, hello,
- 2:39Speaker 3: mister Steve Young. My name is Bobby. I just want
- 2:42Speaker 3: to say I'm a big fan. And then I started
- 2:43Speaker 3: to walk away and you said I know who you are,
- 2:47Speaker 3: and my life changed.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Well, no, because strangely, my two girls are in high
- 2:54Speaker 2: school that were still at that point where like eighth
- 2:56Speaker 2: and tenth grade, so I was driving them everywhere, and
- 2:59Speaker 2: every morning I'm carpool and by Bones Joe and they
- 3:04Speaker 2: they love country music and I always loved it kind
- 3:07Speaker 2: of quietly, but then when my kids, I'm like, oh,
- 3:10Speaker 2: this is amazing, and so listen to you every morning,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and so I wanted. I went home and I.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Said, girls, guess who I met Bobby Bones? And then
- 3:21Speaker 4: it was and then I think you mentioned me somewhere
- 3:24Speaker 4: randomly on the show. Randomly we were driving and it's like,
- 3:29Speaker 4: my girls are like, he just said your name.
- 3:31Speaker 2: So it works in a strange circle. But finish the
- 3:34Speaker 2: story though, to really like people need to know this.
- 3:38Speaker 2: So it's an elite kind of golf invite to go
- 3:41Speaker 2: to the AT and T and Bobby was there and
- 3:43Speaker 2: it was all set to go, and it was like
- 3:45Speaker 2: you play Thursday and Friday and you make the cut
- 3:48Speaker 2: or not whatever. So it's Wednesday. This is when we
- 3:50Speaker 2: met on Wednesday, and like I go Thursday to kind
- 3:53Speaker 2: of tell him. I told him I remember, you know
- 3:55Speaker 2: something I remembered the show. And he's gone like he
- 4:01Speaker 2: big time that I had to work. No no, no, no,
- 4:04Speaker 2: no no. The Grammy's called and it's like, oh, sorry,
- 4:07Speaker 2: elite people I'm out of here. I've never seen that
- 4:10Speaker 2: done by anybody who's ever been via the eighteen in
- 4:12Speaker 2: my life ever that you just show up and it's
- 4:15Speaker 2: like see you, and like even people who have been
- 4:17Speaker 2: like presidential campaign, but nobody says see you to the
- 4:22Speaker 2: aten T except for the great body see you.
- 4:25Speaker 3: So then what happens is we're talking about Like for me,
- 4:28Speaker 3: it was like the fight.
- 4:30Speaker 2: He's trying to back, don't let him go. I mean,
- 4:32Speaker 2: I see Steve from your perspective, he did big time
- 4:34Speaker 2: the at and T PLA.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I thought, and I want to sid it to everybody
- 4:37Speaker 3: at A D and T and Pebble Beach and every
- 4:39Speaker 3: pebble and every beach. But what really had love you all?
- 4:42Speaker 3: He had to go work, so regardless, I'm on the air.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And the question was because I have a job much
- 4:47Speaker 3: like yours. Well, we've been able to meet a lot
- 4:48Speaker 3: of cool people, a lot of famous people, and that
- 4:51Speaker 3: doesn't always mix. Some famous people are cool, some aren't.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Some cool people are famous, some are and they're like,
- 4:56Speaker 3: who are like the coolest famous people you met? And
- 4:58Speaker 3: I had listed I loved County Crows, Adam Durret's cool.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I went through the list of my top five, and
- 5:06Speaker 3: you were my top five.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I couldn't believe that. My kids thought I honestly, they
- 5:10Speaker 2: don't know what I did before, and they think I'm
- 5:13Speaker 2: kind of like boring and like and when you said
- 5:17Speaker 2: my name is the top five, my kids like.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Oh, Dad, well that's very nice.
- 5:22Speaker 2: So Bobby, thank you for putting me on the pedestal
- 5:25Speaker 2: at home, I get.
- 5:27Speaker 3: And then I get a text him an unknown number,
- 5:28Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh, my stalker's back thinking, and it
- 5:32Speaker 3: was and it was Steve. And the first thing he
- 5:34Speaker 3: says is, I remember the bit I was talking about,
- 5:36Speaker 3: how did you get my number? I'm glad you did,
- 5:39Speaker 3: but that feels like you.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I think you gave it to me that brief moment.
- 5:42Speaker 3: No chance, because I would never afford I would never
- 5:44Speaker 3: have said I think you would want my number. There's
- 5:46Speaker 3: no chance. I would have been too insecure to even
- 5:49Speaker 3: offer my number.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Well that's a really good point. When you said my
- 5:53Speaker 2: name top five, and I said, okay, I've got to
- 5:55Speaker 2: reach out to him, it's like anybody with I might
- 5:58Speaker 2: have gotten to Steve Johnathan out of Beach. I think
- 6:00Speaker 2: that's what I did.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Who I did, not big time. I love Steve John
- 6:04Speaker 3: out heroic to me, and that's how we're are here.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I do want to start though, because I have taken
- 6:11Speaker 3: a crash course and Forever Young, which is your I
- 6:14Speaker 3: appreciate that your charity, and there are a couple of
- 6:16Speaker 3: things that I would like to talk about. First of all,
- 6:19Speaker 3: I know your wife, Barb and the music component of it.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yeah, we did that. Yes, this weekend Monday, we opened
- 6:27Speaker 2: up our ninth one renowned children's hospital and a reno.
- 6:30Speaker 2: So it's a it's music. Would you explain music therapy?
- 6:34Speaker 2: Therapy is crazy, Like, I'm not a musician. I only
- 6:37Speaker 2: dream I would if you guys could. I wish I
- 6:40Speaker 2: could help the regime regime, so I wish I could
- 6:45Speaker 2: do anything. If I could sing, I would give up everything.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I would give up all. But I love as everyone does,
- 6:51Speaker 2: they love music. My wife, when she was in college,
- 6:55Speaker 2: a friend of hers who gotten a terrible car accident,
- 6:57Speaker 2: terrible brain injury. She did the research, which is my
- 7:00Speaker 2: wife's way to kind of like and she figured out
- 7:02Speaker 2: that there's this thing called music music therapy. And she
- 7:05Speaker 2: went and played bon Jovi because I was her favorite band.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Like over like this, all the time in the in
- 7:10Speaker 2: the room, and she believed it's changed. It helped, and
- 7:14Speaker 2: no one else is like, you know whatever, that doesn't
- 7:17Speaker 2: make any sense. So then twenty years later, a dear
- 7:21Speaker 2: friend of ours that I grew up with, daughter who
- 7:24Speaker 2: was seventeen a musician and she was down in La
- 7:26Speaker 2: recording she was going to be a star. She passed
- 7:30Speaker 2: away like out of like this, on a hike at
- 7:34Speaker 2: a girls camp. And so it was a year anniversary
- 7:38Speaker 2: of that tragedy that Barb's like, wait a second, we
- 7:42Speaker 2: need to honor her because she had done to the
- 7:44Speaker 2: children's She would got to the children's hospital nearby and
- 7:46Speaker 2: play for the kids. As a seventh year old, you
- 7:48Speaker 2: know like this, I want to help, I want to
- 7:50Speaker 2: do things. So we started Sophie's Place, the name of
- 7:53Speaker 2: Sophie for music therapy, and at the time, in two
- 7:55Speaker 2: thousand and six, music therapy in hospitals was starting. They
- 7:59Speaker 2: used to have a heart and the music therapists would
- 8:02Speaker 2: go around a room to room and it's like, no,
- 8:03Speaker 2: we need a space. And so we went to the
- 8:06Speaker 2: hospital and said, look, we'll we'll build the space and
- 8:09Speaker 2: what's funded with the music therapists music therapy is crazy
- 8:14Speaker 2: because music is the only thing that crosses over the
- 8:17Speaker 2: both sides of the brain. Language doesn't do that, and
- 8:19Speaker 2: so the music is ends up to be a scientific medicine,
- 8:24Speaker 2: like there's specific things that you can do in motion
- 8:28Speaker 2: for beating a drum or pain or because pain and
- 8:33Speaker 2: music travel the same places and so if there's music,
- 8:37Speaker 2: it can't be as much pain. And so there's all that.
- 8:40Speaker 2: There's hundreds of prescriptions written every day by doctors for
- 8:44Speaker 2: the music therapists for specific things for medicine for the
- 8:49Speaker 2: healing of kids in Schildn's Hospital. So that's that's that,
- 8:52Speaker 2: and I wish I was a musician. We had Dan
- 8:55Speaker 2: Reynolds came and the Imagine Dragons, we had Chester Bennington
- 9:00Speaker 2: take a park Lincoln Park before. We've had a number
- 9:04Speaker 2: of people come through and play for the kids, and
- 9:07Speaker 2: so I encourage it. Page idiots pick up Trulln's Hospital.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Let's go, Let's go.
- 9:11Speaker 3: So I used to be on the board of a
- 9:13Speaker 3: similar group called Musicians on Call and we would go
- 9:16Speaker 3: and especially with older like eighties and nineties who were
- 9:20Speaker 3: in the hospital, and it was there we would learn
- 9:23Speaker 3: songs from when they were young and it would be
- 9:24Speaker 3: the only time that you would see them light up
- 9:27Speaker 3: like there would be and because if they didn't remember
- 9:30Speaker 3: whatever they didn't remember, what they would remember is how
- 9:33Speaker 3: they felt when that music was played when they were
- 9:35Speaker 3: a kid, and it was like to see it even briefly.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So it's not we know that music has that effect,
- 9:42Speaker 2: but I think I just want to make sure that
- 9:44Speaker 2: people understand that there's a science to the specific things
- 9:47Speaker 2: that music, like brain injuries. They can't get kids to
- 9:53Speaker 2: move their arms, but if they can beat a drum
- 9:57Speaker 2: for some reason, so they beat a drum and they
- 9:59Speaker 2: use that as they beat the drum to reteach them
- 10:02Speaker 2: how to eat. And so there's just music has this
- 10:06Speaker 2: strange power over and Chester Bennington's the one that told me.
- 10:09Speaker 2: He says they haven't figured out where where uh music
- 10:15Speaker 2: starts in the brain. And he says that's because that's
- 10:18Speaker 2: where God sits and no one will actually find it.
- 10:21Speaker 2: So I said, I remember chester Ton.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I went and looked up the charity on the there's
- 10:25Speaker 3: a website and goes, you have a charity is legit?
- 10:27Speaker 3: You guys got one hundred percent. I was worried. Honestly,
- 10:30Speaker 3: I was like, oh, man, do I ever want to
- 10:31Speaker 3: go look at this and I wait, could be scaled,
- 10:34Speaker 3: and I will say it with full authority. It is
- 10:38Speaker 3: not all the stars.
- 10:39Speaker 2: That was yeah, so uh charity navigator, we're one of
- 10:43Speaker 2: the ones. Thank goodness. No, we're we're a little we're
- 10:48Speaker 2: a little group. We're not big. We we peck away
- 10:51Speaker 2: every year. We trade in all this memorabilia for our
- 10:54Speaker 2: golf tournaments to raise the money. And uh, we just
- 10:57Speaker 2: we find like minded people and do our little our
- 11:00Speaker 2: garden in our little corner of the world and try
- 11:02Speaker 2: to do something good.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Let's talk sports a little bit. Oh, I want to
- 11:09Speaker 3: show you because this to me. Let me sit in
- 11:11Speaker 3: my pocket.
- 11:12Speaker 2: You show me your MVP trophy from last week.
- 11:15Speaker 3: You know I couldn't. I couldn't look my pocket as
- 11:17Speaker 3: a belt. It was a really nice belt. I couldn't
- 11:19Speaker 3: travel with it. But ipen to open these. But these
- 11:21Speaker 3: are cards from like nineteen ninety These are pro Line.
- 11:24Speaker 3: These are the weirdest.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, these.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Are the weirdest cards I've ever seen.
- 11:28Speaker 2: These are the ones because.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Some guys have that don't have their shirt on. I
- 11:30Speaker 3: wanted to roll through some of these cards. Your card
- 11:33Speaker 3: actually wasn't that weird. I put this in. Do you
- 11:36Speaker 3: remember this? Do you remember this picture?
- 11:37Speaker 2: I do, But that's amazing that there's someone with those.
- 11:41Speaker 3: It's odd. So what I wanted to do was roll
- 11:44Speaker 3: through some of these cards that I have not opened yet.
- 11:47Speaker 2: This is magic trick.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I wish that'd be cool. You can't open it here?
- 11:51Speaker 2: Do want me to do it?
- 11:52Speaker 3: Well, I don't want to rip it. Here we go.
- 11:54Speaker 3: And if I pull up a player that you remember, yeah,
- 11:58Speaker 3: and if you have a story about that player.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Okay, let's do it.
- 12:00Speaker 3: I would like to hear it.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Yeah, but there's a lot of stories I can't tell.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Well, then don't tell those or tell that will pay
- 12:06Speaker 3: the micro right you'll Okay, let's start with Bobby. He
- 12:11Speaker 3: already k know who it was, Bobby Brister.
- 12:15Speaker 2: So some people like, it's what's fun the league? The
- 12:21Speaker 2: NFL is full of just characters right from everywhere. And
- 12:26Speaker 2: if I remember, Bobby was like not Cajun like, uh,
- 12:31Speaker 2: Bobby a Bear, because Bobby a Bear played for the Saints.
- 12:34Speaker 2: When you met Bobby Aber, he's like he would speak English,
- 12:38Speaker 2: but Cajun English. And I'd be like, hey, bro, I
- 12:44Speaker 2: don't know you do I don't know and so then
- 12:46Speaker 2: I thought, Okay, you're in the Superdome and seventy thousand,
- 12:51Speaker 2: eighty thousand people are screaming, and you're in the huddle,
- 12:53Speaker 2: and Bobby Aber's gone to play. I'd be like, bro
- 12:59Speaker 2: because this every else speak caging. No, no, they don't.
- 13:02Speaker 2: So there's all these good and Bubby Brister is that
- 13:05Speaker 2: kind of a character. He's My memory is that he
- 13:08Speaker 2: was from the South, and uh, he was a country like.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I can see Bubby growing up in a place where
- 13:15Speaker 2: you know, all the songs are with the dirt road
- 13:18Speaker 2: and the fish and uh, you know, and you know
- 13:22Speaker 2: all the great lyrics. I'm just screwing up right now.
- 13:25Speaker 2: But uh, and that's what Bubby's a Bubby is a
- 13:28Speaker 2: country dude.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Do you recognize that guy? This would be a guy
- 13:35Speaker 3: Pierce Hold. Do you play with it?
- 13:38Speaker 2: The pier hold. That's the most serious thing I've ever
- 13:41Speaker 2: seen a Pierce Hold. Oh my gosh. Look he's looking
- 13:45Speaker 2: up in the distance like weird like look of George
- 13:48Speaker 2: Washington cross into Delaware. Yes, you're looking for something really important.
- 13:54Speaker 2: He never he never found anything important. I can promise
- 13:56Speaker 2: you that here's a good dude. But that's the other
- 13:58Speaker 2: thing about guys in the NFL is that these good
- 14:01Speaker 2: dudes that are like really kind hearted. Pierce is a
- 14:05Speaker 2: kind hearted guy, very soft spoken, but was like massive,
- 14:12Speaker 2: Like if you walked in the room, you're like, hey,
- 14:13Speaker 2: whoa stay there? And he was so big and strong,
- 14:17Speaker 2: and then you go play and you're like, holy crap.
- 14:20Speaker 2: There is like two sides to people. Are there two
- 14:23Speaker 2: sides to you? Do you have a side that if
- 14:26Speaker 2: it's time to go, like turn it like it's time I'm.
- 14:29Speaker 3: On the quarterback and podcast now, thanks for asking, Steve.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Yeah, no, but is it because Pierce had two sides?
- 14:35Speaker 2: He was most of the time kind, peaceful, and then
- 14:38Speaker 2: you go play, You're like that dude is different.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I think and you probably have a version of this
- 14:42Speaker 3: as well. For me, I'm on all the time if
- 14:45Speaker 3: I am performing on stage, doing a radio show or
- 14:47Speaker 3: a TV show. But when I'm not on, I'm off,
- 14:50Speaker 3: meaning I'm very quiet. I'm a wallflower. I don't have
- 14:54Speaker 3: much to say because all I do is say and
- 14:56Speaker 3: I know you have opinions.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Otherwise otherwise you could be you all the time.
- 15:01Speaker 3: I would have no no energy, no.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Juice, no, it was just it would be I get that.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I get that.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Yeah, so I would say that would be like off
- 15:10Speaker 3: and or on.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I mean no, I'm kind of mean, you're always all
- 15:13Speaker 2: the time. No, I'm on. I mean, well, when Bobby's talking,
- 15:15Speaker 2: because when we're on Steve he's always talking, I know,
- 15:18Speaker 2: so he just let him talk. Yeah.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Here, and you don't have to comment on this guy.
- 15:22Speaker 3: But see he has no shirt on in this picture.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Oh yeah, look at that.
- 15:24Speaker 3: These are like little bellies. Yeah, they're like glamour shots.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Who is that? Oh? Greg Town's okay, how about you're
- 15:31Speaker 2: a coach. Here there's another George Washington crossing the Delaware.
- 15:36Speaker 2: That's he's the he's the Cajun coach, right, Jim Mora. Yeah,
- 15:40Speaker 2: Saints playoffs? You know that's right? Right?
- 15:44Speaker 3: Yeah, let's do one more? Did you have another one atdie?
- 15:46Speaker 2: See Matt Millan in there also? Wait Matt Millon. Ye,
- 15:49Speaker 2: good friend of mine played for the Raiders for a
- 15:51Speaker 2: long time, joined the forty nine ers, and uh, he
- 15:58Speaker 2: would have us. Partner was we were roommates. So we
- 16:02Speaker 2: hung together and Matt would invite us because we're single,
- 16:08Speaker 2: for dinner for the family and he'd say, look six
- 16:11Speaker 2: fifteen and so. But don't don't come later early, just
- 16:15Speaker 2: be there six fifteen. So we would kind of wait
- 16:18Speaker 2: around the corner until six fifteen because we didn't want
- 16:20Speaker 2: to mess up. So we pulled in and then he'd
- 16:23Speaker 2: open the door and he'd be in his underwear and
- 16:25Speaker 2: he'd be like, yeah, come in, and the kids would
- 16:27Speaker 2: be all around the table and we go in and
- 16:29Speaker 2: eat eight and he's like eat, you know, and so
- 16:33Speaker 2: we would eat and then he would like we'd finish.
- 16:35Speaker 2: He's like, okay, now leave, so we would leave and
- 16:39Speaker 2: it was the greatest It was the greatest invite you
- 16:43Speaker 2: could ever have to come to somebody's house because you
- 16:45Speaker 2: don't have to say anything. You just got to be
- 16:47Speaker 2: on time. You don't look at the underwear, and just
- 16:50Speaker 2: go in and eat and eat and leave, like literally
- 16:54Speaker 2: encouraged to leave as fast as you can. And we'd
- 16:57Speaker 2: be full. Pat would make tremendous food and we'd walk
- 17:00Speaker 2: out like it's amazing, Like this is the greatest thing ever.
- 17:04Speaker 2: And the first time I ever met Matt Mellon, he
- 17:06Speaker 2: was playing for the Raiders linebacker and I was a
- 17:09Speaker 2: rookie and I was in the league, like you know,
- 17:11Speaker 2: and I'm playing the Raiders and and I'm you know,
- 17:14Speaker 2: you can imagine like you break the huddle and you're
- 17:16Speaker 2: like and Matt Mellon's like alert alert alert, Mormon in
- 17:20Speaker 2: the backfield, Moreman in the backfield, alert alert, look around?
- 17:26Speaker 2: What does he talk about? I I that threw me
- 17:31Speaker 2: for a long time and that and I have laughed
- 17:33Speaker 2: about that forever. But he was the kind of guy
- 17:35Speaker 2: that would do stupid stuff like that.
- 17:38Speaker 3: When you when you leave BYU and you go to
- 17:40Speaker 3: the USFL, you put a year there? What was that even?
- 17:43Speaker 2: Like? Yeah, so it was amazing. It was like the
- 17:49Speaker 2: NFL has been around forever, this upstart league. Young most
- 17:52Speaker 2: of us were twenty one, twenty two years old. We
- 17:56Speaker 2: were living in la We were being coached by John
- 17:58Speaker 2: Hadl who was famous kind of a quarterback back in
- 18:01Speaker 2: the day. And Sid Gilman, one of the he was
- 18:03Speaker 2: old at that time, but he was the godfather of
- 18:06Speaker 2: the forward passing like it was amazing. And I had
- 18:09Speaker 2: Gary Zimmerman who ended up being an Oregon where you
- 18:12Speaker 2: guys just just were he was ended up being a
- 18:14Speaker 2: Hall of Fame player. We had Jojo Townsell. We had
- 18:16Speaker 2: all these young players. That was a lot of fun.
- 18:18Speaker 2: We We had a great time, and the league was
- 18:22Speaker 2: legit football.
- 18:23Speaker 3: It was why why why did you go to the USFL?
- 18:25Speaker 2: Though? Because I could play right away and I was
- 18:29Speaker 2: gonna be drafted number one by the Bengals, and I
- 18:31Speaker 2: didn't This sounds a little weird, but I didn't know
- 18:34Speaker 2: anyone Cincinnati. You knew the people in LA. You know
- 18:38Speaker 2: what I mean. There's when you're young, you're like the
- 18:40Speaker 2: familiarity and uh, and playing like I didn't want to
- 18:43Speaker 2: sit and watch and I wanted to go play, and uh,
- 18:47Speaker 2: sitting at you makes you talk like you. Did you
- 18:49Speaker 2: notice that? I don't know if I did.
- 18:50Speaker 3: I feel like I'm talking like you. So I think
- 18:52Speaker 3: there's some hybrid of conversation here where it's very weird.
- 18:56Speaker 3: We had we had talked to another player, peak quarterback
- 18:59Speaker 3: USC and he was drafting the top five same thing.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Went to Cincinnati and was like, I don't know what's
- 19:02Speaker 3: going on. Oh yeah, he never watched on TV. They
- 19:05Speaker 3: He was like, I don't know what happens in Cincinnati, right.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Well, it's like when you're a kid, there's all kind
- 19:11Speaker 2: of weird things are going through your head, and well,
- 19:12Speaker 2: things that do you think matter, don't matter. All of
- 19:16Speaker 2: a sudden, you're you know, you're getting paid to play
- 19:21Speaker 2: a game, Like if like I played football in high
- 19:23Speaker 2: school and now I'm getting paid to do it, it's weird.
- 19:25Speaker 2: And then everyone else that's paid for it, and then
- 19:26Speaker 2: it's like then you see the older guys who are like,
- 19:29Speaker 2: this is my career, this is how I feed my family,
- 19:31Speaker 2: and like I'm going to kill you. You're like, oh,
- 19:35Speaker 2: that's a whole different thing. Like the NFL beats. It
- 19:38Speaker 2: runs people out and you if you are not careful
- 19:42Speaker 2: and you don't really love it and you're not willing
- 19:44Speaker 2: to kind of battle back. You've seen famous like high
- 19:48Speaker 2: draft picks come into the league and then three or
- 19:50Speaker 2: four years they just disappear because they just it's not
- 19:54Speaker 2: their passion, it's they they're really good at it. They're amazing.
- 19:58Speaker 2: They're the best athletes in their town and they're county
- 20:00Speaker 2: and their state at college, best athletes anyone ever seen.
- 20:03Speaker 2: So you keep doing it and then finally the pro
- 20:06Speaker 2: game forces you to say, do I love this? And
- 20:08Speaker 2: a lot of times like I don't. And that's what happens.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Did you realize in your first year with the USFL
- 20:15Speaker 3: that you probably weren't going to be there the next year.
- 20:18Speaker 2: No, I believed it was a league that was going
- 20:20Speaker 2: to stick around. It was in now, and they might
- 20:24Speaker 2: have had to pair back, you know, there's some financial
- 20:26Speaker 2: things that would be careful. But it was done. It
- 20:27Speaker 2: was it was cooked, and then they wanted to go
- 20:31Speaker 2: to the fall and go up against the NFL and
- 20:33Speaker 2: into the ground. It was too bad because the football
- 20:37Speaker 2: I played for the La Express was better than the
- 20:40Speaker 2: football that was in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that I
- 20:43Speaker 2: joined the next year, And so it's too bad. It
- 20:48Speaker 2: should be still here, should be played in the spring,
- 20:49Speaker 2: and they're still trying that. It's been thirty years later,
- 20:52Speaker 2: they're still trying to do what they had at the moment,
- 20:56Speaker 2: and it just didn't work out.
- 20:58Speaker 3: When you go to Tampa, did you have expectation is
- 21:00Speaker 3: playing immediately? What was and do they redraft?
- 21:03Speaker 2: How did you end up a stay when all of
- 21:05Speaker 2: us that you know, Herschel Walker and Reggie White and
- 21:09Speaker 2: Gary Zimmerman and all these guys, we all left undrafted
- 21:13Speaker 2: essentially because we went to the USFL. The league didn't
- 21:15Speaker 2: want to allow that, like, hey, wait a second, because
- 21:19Speaker 2: we all thought let's go to the USFL. Let's play
- 21:22Speaker 2: some ball and if something happens, we'll come back as
- 21:24Speaker 2: free agents and we'll pick a team. And the league's like,
- 21:28Speaker 2: we're and so about a year in they said they
- 21:31Speaker 2: made a deal with the Players Association, which I'm still
- 21:34Speaker 2: pissed out about the Players Association allowing that, because you
- 21:37Speaker 2: think they would protect us. But they had what they
- 21:39Speaker 2: called a supplemental draft, and that's when I was number
- 21:42Speaker 2: one to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 21:43Speaker 3: How did you feel about going to Tampa? Not like
- 21:45Speaker 3: I mean, there wasn't a lot of success there.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I I'm you know, I'm not somebody that's going to go, oh,
- 21:55Speaker 2: I can only play here or there. I need this
- 21:57Speaker 2: or that. I was like, let's go. It was hard.
- 22:02Speaker 2: There were some bad boys down there. James Wilder was
- 22:05Speaker 2: a running back. He's the toughest human being I ever met.
- 22:08Speaker 2: There were some good players down there. It was just
- 22:10Speaker 2: a bad situation. It was you ever been. It's like
- 22:14Speaker 2: any organization when when you know there's no accountability and
- 22:19Speaker 2: all those there's this mitigation and point you're, oh, I
- 22:22Speaker 2: would have been great if for you, and you know,
- 22:25Speaker 2: and that feeds on itself and pretty soon everyone's was
- 22:27Speaker 2: springing the corner and coach oh terrible and everyone's and
- 22:31Speaker 2: you can't get out of it. It's like you can't.
- 22:33Speaker 2: And then there's fight, you know, a fight in the
- 22:35Speaker 2: locker room. I remember the first time I went in
- 22:36Speaker 2: the locker room in Tampa at the halftime. I go
- 22:39Speaker 2: into halftime and you're waiting for like tips from the coach,
- 22:42Speaker 2: you know, like, and half the team's like smoking, and
- 22:47Speaker 2: I'm like, you can't. You can't smoke in the NFL.
- 22:51Speaker 3: You can't.
- 22:51Speaker 2: What is this? I never forgot that.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Man, How did you negotiate the trade to San Francisco?
- 22:58Speaker 3: Then did you let them know you wanted to go?
- 23:00Speaker 2: So we were so bad that I played one full year.
- 23:05Speaker 2: We were so bad that we were going to have
- 23:07Speaker 2: the first draft choice again, and they got a new coach,
- 23:10Speaker 2: Ray Perkins. And Ray Perkins shows up and says to me,
- 23:14Speaker 2: see one thing, I want you to know. I hate
- 23:16Speaker 2: scramblers and I hate lefties. And I'm like that is
- 23:22Speaker 2: bad and uh. And they had a number one choice,
- 23:24Speaker 2: so they took Vinie Ti Saverni and I was like, okay,
- 23:26Speaker 2: we got to get rid of him. So they treated
- 23:28Speaker 2: me the Saint Louis Cardinals. It was equally bad. And
- 23:32Speaker 2: I had made a relationship with the owner, Hugh colver
- 23:34Speaker 2: House Like no one talked to mister colver Osse, but
- 23:36Speaker 2: I saw him and he's like over in the corner.
- 23:38Speaker 2: I'm like, I'll go talk to him like you would.
- 23:40Speaker 2: And so we made a real and that relationship was
- 23:44Speaker 2: one where you know, he said, Steve, I really love
- 23:47Speaker 2: your style. I love what you're doing, and I want
- 23:48Speaker 2: you to be my quarterback for life. I remember telling
- 23:50Speaker 2: me that. So then when Ray Perkins said, bro, you're
- 23:53Speaker 2: out I and you're traded to the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 23:56Speaker 2: I called mister Culversse. I said, mister culvers you told
- 24:00Speaker 2: me I was a quarterback for life. And he goes, oh,
- 24:03Speaker 2: I know, Steve. You know he's had a Southern draw.
- 24:05Speaker 2: You know I love you and I bet the new
- 24:08Speaker 2: coach and I don't know. And I go, well, you
- 24:10Speaker 2: can't send me this like you gotta let me go
- 24:13Speaker 2: somewhere I can thrive. He goes, oh, let me think
- 24:15Speaker 2: about it, and he goes he calls me back. He says,
- 24:18Speaker 2: I cancel that trade, and now you have a week.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I want you to find a place that you like that?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Who would That's unheard of in sports? Right, And and
- 24:29Speaker 2: Ray Perkins was pissed, and he was like like because
- 24:33Speaker 2: he had they had a number of draft toy they
- 24:35Speaker 2: got a number on Draft Show, whatever they got from him,
- 24:38Speaker 2: and he was dumping He couldn't wait to dump me around.
- 24:41Speaker 2: So then they nixed that. And I that's when Bill
- 24:44Speaker 2: Wats called and said that Joe Montana's had his second
- 24:47Speaker 2: back surgery. I think you're amazing. I was like, that's amazing, great,
- 24:54Speaker 2: and uh, that's how that happened. How was the Joe
- 25:02Speaker 2: Montana situ? Come on, you want to spend up five minute?
- 25:06Speaker 2: It was awkward. It was always awkward and Joe, if
- 25:09Speaker 2: Joe walked in right now, he'd we will be like hey,
- 25:14Speaker 2: because we didn't. I would tell you that we never fought,
- 25:19Speaker 2: We never had a crossword, never supported each other in
- 25:22Speaker 2: the ways that we had. The job was the job, right,
- 25:26Speaker 2: played golf together, laughed with Steve Bono and all the
- 25:29Speaker 2: guy like. But it was always awkward because in his mind,
- 25:34Speaker 2: I was brought in to take his job, and in
- 25:37Speaker 2: my mind, I was brought in because he was hurt
- 25:40Speaker 2: and I didn't want to sit and watch. I wouldn't
- 25:42Speaker 2: have if he was gonna go be MVP when Super Bowls,
- 25:45Speaker 2: I'd be like, I love watching him, but I'm gonna
- 25:47Speaker 2: go play somewhere. So the whole thing was just and
- 25:50Speaker 2: Bill Walsh was the one was like, oh, it'll work out,
- 25:53Speaker 2: you know, it'll be fine, And we both hated him
- 25:55Speaker 2: for it, but loved him because we and I would
- 25:58Speaker 2: say this at the end of the day, it got.
- 26:01Speaker 2: It got the most out of both of us being together.
- 26:05Speaker 2: And I watched him play football that is like most
- 26:09Speaker 2: amazing football I've ever seen, and then I hopefully played
- 26:11Speaker 2: football that it was the most. It was the best
- 26:14Speaker 2: I could ever be, you know. And so in that
- 26:16Speaker 2: way it was it sucked and it was great and
- 26:19Speaker 2: it was awkward. And they eighteen someone did a commercial
- 26:22Speaker 2: recently that we did with Bo Jackson comeing to Bo's
- 26:26Speaker 2: house for the Super for the big game and and uh,
- 26:29Speaker 2: I'm there, and and Joe walks in and Bo says, oh, Joe,
- 26:33Speaker 2: good good, that's great. You came, Steve, It's okay, right,
- 26:37Speaker 2: And then I.
- 26:37Speaker 4: Said I'm okay, of course, And then there's this awkward
- 26:40Speaker 4: interchange where we try to high five and miss and
- 26:42Speaker 4: then finally we do this kind of claw shake, you know,
- 26:45Speaker 4: and it's like awkward.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Then it's like perfectly, you know, exemplified what what the
- 26:51Speaker 2: relationship was like.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Did you feel like you were a bit ahead of
- 26:53Speaker 3: your time in the NFL then because you ran.
- 26:56Speaker 2: A thousand percent, I was well, I got kicked out
- 26:58Speaker 2: of Tampa because I was weird and my game was
- 27:03Speaker 2: not the game. I believe that my game was the
- 27:06Speaker 2: best game you could have when you have lots of options,
- 27:09Speaker 2: you don't have to sit there and wait. I always
- 27:11Speaker 2: thought that Tom Brady and Peyton Manny and Dan Marino
- 27:13Speaker 2: were like super gods because they had to just stand
- 27:16Speaker 2: there and they were amazing. That's like I would never
- 27:19Speaker 2: want to do that job. But now, twenty years later,
- 27:24Speaker 2: because of rule changes, the game is so wide open
- 27:27Speaker 2: you have to run. All the first round draft choices
- 27:29Speaker 2: for quarterbacks are all guys that can move around and run,
- 27:31Speaker 2: and so the game strangely is my game. It's like
- 27:35Speaker 2: the game that I like. I watch it, I'm like.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Oh, the love, the love is there, let me please
- 27:45Speaker 1: let me in, you know, And I keep working out
- 27:47Speaker 1: and trying to throw in the backyard just in case
- 27:50Speaker 1: like you never know, like if thirty two guys got sick.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Maybe I throw a couple. Because he said in that look,
- 27:58Speaker 2: think about the game today, and Tom Brady said this,
- 28:00Speaker 2: So it makes it true to me that the game
- 28:03Speaker 2: today is uh, the middle of the field is unpatrolled
- 28:06Speaker 2: where it used to be like a death zone, like
- 28:07Speaker 2: there's there's people run around free. The flats are always open.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Just if you need a completion, you just take it
- 28:12Speaker 2: and you no one can hit you. Like it's a dream.
- 28:16Speaker 2: It's a quarterbacks dream. Oh by the way, you get
- 28:18Speaker 2: paid sixty million dollars a year. It's like a dream.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Like you know. Anyway, go on, I'm not I'm not bitter.
- 28:24Speaker 2: It's not like it's not it's not a get off
- 28:26Speaker 2: my lawn kind of thing. I know you're thinking, hey,
- 28:30Speaker 2: oh man, get off my lawn. No, it's more of
- 28:33Speaker 2: an appreciation for the changes that have come to me
- 28:36Speaker 2: that make me that resonate and make me want to
- 28:38Speaker 2: play again.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Who did you fear on the other side of the line.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I always say, the unblocked guy, you know what I mean,
- 28:47Speaker 2: Like that's where you could really get hurt. So it's
- 28:49Speaker 2: like I don't care if it's you, guys, and.
- 28:51Speaker 3: What was that up to you guys? But was it
- 28:52Speaker 3: up to you define who was going to be the
- 28:54Speaker 3: unblock guy?
- 28:54Speaker 2: It was part of partly me, and part was just
- 28:56Speaker 2: mistakes and you get hit from you know, and and
- 29:00Speaker 2: and that. Back then, the job was to put you
- 29:03Speaker 2: out of the game. That was the job. And people
- 29:05Speaker 2: remember the bounty and all this stuff like there's that
- 29:08Speaker 2: was very common. And so you had the best athletes
- 29:11Speaker 2: in the world, not the smartest, but the best athletes
- 29:14Speaker 2: in the world paid lots of money to come kill you.
- 29:17Speaker 2: And so I feared anyone that wasn't blocked. But if
- 29:21Speaker 2: you want to say who I didn't want to see,
- 29:25Speaker 2: it was REGGI White. And did you know you were
- 29:28Speaker 2: old enough to remember, you know, as football card said
- 29:33Speaker 2: Reggie White, Tennessee six six three twenty. And you guys
- 29:39Speaker 2: have to know that when you're a rookie, you you list,
- 29:42Speaker 2: they give you a piece of paper card companies and
- 29:45Speaker 2: you say who you are, Steve Young b Yu six
- 29:48Speaker 2: two ten so forever more. If you look on the
- 29:52Speaker 2: card and it's going to say six to two ten,
- 29:53Speaker 2: because I wrote it down. Now, am I six two
- 29:57Speaker 2: might be slightly aspirational. But you know what I mean, Like,
- 30:00Speaker 2: you write down what you feel you are, right, And
- 30:03Speaker 2: if I just thought about Reggie White, he wrote down
- 30:05Speaker 2: six six, three twenty. If you write down three twenty,
- 30:09Speaker 2: you're four hundred, you know you are. If you were
- 30:13Speaker 2: three twenty, you'd write down to eighty, right, do you
- 30:16Speaker 2: understand that? Probably? So Reggie was the biggest, most amazing
- 30:22Speaker 2: athlete that ever lived. I never I didn't meet Biblical
- 30:30Speaker 2: you know, stone throwing gargantuan you know what I mean.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I didn't I didn't meet you know, but Reggie White
- 30:36Speaker 2: was if he walked in today, you'd be like, oh.
- 30:42Speaker 3: But he was a pastor. I wasn't full of love.
- 30:44Speaker 2: So one of the great athletes in the world because
- 30:52Speaker 2: he would he was loud, so when he played, he
- 30:55Speaker 2: would scream. So they're like, rah, you know what I mean,
- 30:58Speaker 2: Like you would so you could hear him. So you
- 31:00Speaker 2: like you drop back to pass and you're like, here's this.
- 31:02Speaker 2: We put three guys on him, like Reggie the three guys.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Then he'd throw them out of the way, you know,
- 31:08Speaker 2: and then you'd hear him coming. You're like God, You're
- 31:11Speaker 2: like everyone's screaming. So then all of a sudden, he's there, right,
- 31:16Speaker 2: All of a sudden, he's there, and he's he's on you, right.
- 31:20Speaker 2: And the most amazing thing is he would grab me.
- 31:23Speaker 2: He would turn over and fall backwards and let me
- 31:26Speaker 2: fall on top of him, and then he would hold
- 31:29Speaker 2: on and there was like this awkward moments, like you know,
- 31:33Speaker 2: and he'd be like, Steve, how you doing. I'm like,
- 31:37Speaker 2: not so good, Reggie, not so good. You put your
- 31:40Speaker 2: dad's here because my dad helped him find my dadil
- 31:43Speaker 2: worry fell when we went to the rookie and when
- 31:45Speaker 2: we were seniors in college, we went to the All
- 31:47Speaker 2: Star Game together and we got to be friends. So
- 31:50Speaker 2: Reggie would play and he would want to catch up.
- 31:53Speaker 2: So he would like, ah, so like intense and I
- 31:56Speaker 2: got he'd have you and then he'd like, hey, so, uh,
- 31:58Speaker 2: you know, how's everything going? You know? I'm like are
- 32:03Speaker 2: you married? You know? Like like and I'm like, Reggie,
- 32:06Speaker 2: freaking let's just talk after right, talk later, Like let's don't.
- 32:11Speaker 2: I don't want to meet like this anymore. This is
- 32:13Speaker 2: not appropriate, you know. And that's Reggie. Reggie is the
- 32:17Speaker 2: greatest athlete because he was in a You appreciate this Bobby.
- 32:20Speaker 2: He was an emotional athlete. He could be an incredible
- 32:23Speaker 2: competitor and he could be an incredible friend like that.
- 32:28Speaker 2: That's hard to do. Most of the friends that I
- 32:30Speaker 2: played against went the other way. It was worse right,
- 32:34Speaker 2: they were I know you you know, they just don't
- 32:36Speaker 2: know how to handle the the athleticism. In the emotional
- 32:40Speaker 2: athleticism I let. Reggie was amazing. He was a he
- 32:43Speaker 2: was a pastor. He took We'd go to the Pro
- 32:45Speaker 2: Bowl in Hawaii and he would have a revival and
- 32:50Speaker 2: everyone was invited, and so you go down and then
- 32:53Speaker 2: he was like, who want to be baptized? And the
- 32:54Speaker 2: guys were quite well, and then they'd go out to
- 32:56Speaker 2: the ocean. He baptize all these Pro Bowls. Like that's Reggie, man,
- 33:01Speaker 2: that's Reggie Steve.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Mid nineties, what was the team that you hated the most?
- 33:07Speaker 2: Well, it was a love hate because the Dallas Cowboys
- 33:12Speaker 2: had become very quickly in the early nineties like amazing,
- 33:18Speaker 2: like there was no weakness. They were and they've unfortunately
- 33:23Speaker 2: for them, they've never seen close to that since.
- 33:25Speaker 3: But he's a massive Cowboys fan, by the way, and.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Talk about underachievement to talent for thirty years. But that team,
- 33:33Speaker 2: that team was some bad boys, and they're doing a
- 33:36Speaker 2: Netflix thing on it right now that it's gonna come out.
- 33:39Speaker 2: I'm actually in an interviewing for it. That's why I
- 33:41Speaker 2: have to go anyway, The Cowboys were we were the best,
- 33:46Speaker 2: and they were the best, and that's how I always
- 33:47Speaker 2: felt like that's where you found out who you were.
- 33:50Speaker 2: So in that way, I remember when true I remember
- 33:53Speaker 2: the Cowboys coming to play the Candlestick and as you know,
- 33:55Speaker 2: you warm up at the fifty and you go opposite
- 33:57Speaker 2: ways so you see each other, and I'm like, Troy, Man,
- 34:00Speaker 2: thanks for coming. You know, I'm on this quest to
- 34:02Speaker 2: see how good I could get, and the only way
- 34:03Speaker 2: I can see how good I could be is to
- 34:05Speaker 2: play the best. And you guys are the best, so
- 34:06Speaker 2: this is gonna be amazing. I almost hugged them because
- 34:08Speaker 2: I was in this this space where I just I
- 34:11Speaker 2: wanted to find out, like I wanted to like, how
- 34:14Speaker 2: good could I be? And I remember Troy's like freaking weirdo.
- 34:20Speaker 2: But there was that, but that was the there was
- 34:22Speaker 2: the hatred of it because they were so good that
- 34:25Speaker 2: they got in the way, like super Bowls were like
- 34:29Speaker 2: the trophy is like oh, and then it went there.
- 34:31Speaker 2: You know, it was like one way or another, And
- 34:33Speaker 2: that was super painful. I mean ninety two championship game
- 34:38Speaker 2: against the Cowboys that we got beat. I still throw
- 34:40Speaker 2: up in my mouth when I think about that game
- 34:44Speaker 2: like that, Like that's the people say to me, what's
- 34:45Speaker 2: the most memorable? My most memorable thing is losing that game.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Like you'd think it would be all the good stuff,
- 34:51Speaker 2: it was like, those were painful times.
- 34:53Speaker 3: I have final three questions. Let's go with which Super
- 34:56Speaker 3: Bowl was the sweetest?
- 34:58Speaker 2: Well, the one I started in was number one for sure,
- 35:00Speaker 2: because I felt like I dragged myself there over the
- 35:03Speaker 2: many years and the awkwardness and this strangeness, and there
- 35:07Speaker 2: was a the goal for nineteen ninety one broke out
- 35:10Speaker 2: in the Middle East and and uh it was October
- 35:15Speaker 2: and I was replacing Joe and it was it was
- 35:18Speaker 2: it was awkward for the whole Bay area, right. It
- 35:20Speaker 2: was just odd and different and strange and everyone was struggling.
- 35:25Speaker 2: And the headline was the goal was above the fold
- 35:29Speaker 2: in the San Francis Carnal. You can go look at
- 35:30Speaker 2: them at microfiche. Uh. The goal for it's Steve Young's
- 35:34Speaker 2: fault because it was funny they thought would be funny,
- 35:37Speaker 2: like it was the funny thing, except that was it
- 35:39Speaker 2: was me, Like it wasn't funny to me. Uh And
- 35:42Speaker 2: so yeah, there was. There were great times and hard
- 35:48Speaker 2: times and it was amazing.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Did you have time after you finished playing football where
- 35:52Speaker 3: you had to kind of re discover who you were
- 35:55Speaker 3: because you had played you had been football your whole life?
- 35:59Speaker 3: Or were you pretty balance? I mean what you got?
- 36:01Speaker 2: What a lot of green? I was? I mean I
- 36:03Speaker 2: was you were totally imbalanced because you had to give
- 36:05Speaker 2: pour yourself into something to be great or good or great,
- 36:09Speaker 2: and you had to do it every day all day,
- 36:11Speaker 2: like that's all you did. And that way balance is
- 36:15Speaker 2: really hard to find. And I think that retiring was
- 36:18Speaker 2: like amazing in some ways because you could now recognize
- 36:24Speaker 2: that there's like wonderful things in your life that you
- 36:30Speaker 2: didn't they couldn't find a way in before.
- 36:33Speaker 3: And did I struggle at all?
- 36:35Speaker 2: Or h I think I think anyone who has a
- 36:37Speaker 2: dream that actually comes true and they can actually perform,
- 36:40Speaker 2: like you know, your but jobs that quit at young ages,
- 36:44Speaker 2: like you know, even acting, I think sometimes you can
- 36:47Speaker 2: go long time, but most of the times you get
- 36:48Speaker 2: you get a star goes and then it falls and
- 36:51Speaker 2: you know, sports is that way. You can be great
- 36:54Speaker 2: at something worldwide in a way like one of the greatest,
- 36:58Speaker 2: and then that's it. There's a day it just stops
- 37:01Speaker 2: and the next day you wake up and you're like, wow, Okay,
- 37:05Speaker 2: that was amazing. I kind of want to keep doing that.
- 37:08Speaker 2: But now it's over. And so the great thing I'm good,
- 37:11Speaker 2: the thing I'm best at, maybe I'll be the best
- 37:13Speaker 2: at that. My whole life ever is gone and I'm
- 37:16Speaker 2: actually looking forward and I'm not even good at anything else.
- 37:20Speaker 2: And so it said, there's a death. I always tell
- 37:22Speaker 2: people when they're transitioning, it's a death, like treat it
- 37:26Speaker 2: that way, like it it died, and now you got
- 37:29Speaker 2: to warn it and now you have to go through
- 37:31Speaker 2: the pain of it all and all the twelve steps
- 37:34Speaker 2: and come out and then say, okay, then what's the future.
- 37:38Speaker 2: I'm going to go try to be great at something
- 37:39Speaker 2: else and I'm just gonna And my hero, Roger Shaubek,
- 37:43Speaker 2: I was asking for advice and you go, I'm retiring.
- 37:47Speaker 2: What should I do? He goes, run, I go run,
- 37:49Speaker 2: where you go just I don't know, Just run away
- 37:51Speaker 2: because the game will never leave you. They'll always want
- 37:53Speaker 2: to ask you questions about it. Don't worry about it,
- 37:55Speaker 2: but you need to run away from it because all
- 37:58Speaker 2: all you'll do is try to go back because it's
- 38:01Speaker 2: such an allure, because it was the time that you
- 38:04Speaker 2: were the best. And it's been great advice because despite
- 38:09Speaker 2: the fact that my kids don't care, and the only
- 38:12Speaker 2: thing they care about is I'm number top five Bobby Bones,
- 38:15Speaker 2: Like literally, they talk about it all the time. It's
- 38:19Speaker 2: been a great advice because it is a death and
- 38:22Speaker 2: I and I treat it that way, like it died
- 38:24Speaker 2: and it was amazing and now I got a different life.
- 38:29Speaker 3: What's your favorite picture in your house that has nothing
- 38:31Speaker 3: to do with sports?
- 38:32Speaker 2: There's nothing. If you walked in my home, you would
- 38:34Speaker 2: not know that it was my home. I didn't want
- 38:37Speaker 2: to do that to the kids. They had enough problems
- 38:39Speaker 2: at school and especially with my boys. You know, just
- 38:42Speaker 2: Steve young skid, what do you do? You throw the
- 38:44Speaker 2: ball and like, no, I hate football, you know, yeah,
- 38:47Speaker 2: I like music, theater, you know, like so in our home,
- 38:51Speaker 2: nothing like that we have. I guess we don't have
- 38:56Speaker 2: a ton of art. We have a lot of transitional art,
- 38:58Speaker 2: I'll call it. So like for Valentine's Day or Thanksgiving,
- 39:02Speaker 2: she draws a huge tree and then everyone has to
- 39:05Speaker 2: write what they're thankful for and put it on the tree.
- 39:08Speaker 2: So it's like that's the main thing in the house.
- 39:10Speaker 2: And then there's the during Halloween there's all the pictures
- 39:14Speaker 2: from all the years of Halloween. They go up and
- 39:16Speaker 2: then come down. So a lot of transitional art in
- 39:19Speaker 2: our house. Uh. Look, I you know, there's there's a
- 39:26Speaker 2: little a small picture of a great picture of Jesus
- 39:29Speaker 2: that I love. That's like very to me, is very honest.
- 39:32Speaker 2: That is up on the on the on the we
- 39:36Speaker 2: love the fireplace. That's just small but just kind of
- 39:39Speaker 2: reminder that kind of thing.
- 39:40Speaker 3: And our final experiment, mount rushmore foreheads musically, who do
- 39:45Speaker 3: you put on that all time?
- 39:50Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I'm just gonna go with like for me.
- 39:55Speaker 3: Only for you, It's only for you, it's your personal
- 39:57Speaker 3: mountain rush for me.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Right all right? Strangely algreen, Uh can I have earth
- 40:06Speaker 2: wind fire like the whole group? Yes? Okay, these are
- 40:10Speaker 2: like some of like from the beginning, I think, uh
- 40:17Speaker 2: uh huh you too, Like I just you know, I'm
- 40:22Speaker 2: just thinking influence. Well you have run out of places
- 40:24Speaker 2: because Bruce Wringston has to be there as well. But
- 40:26Speaker 2: now I have to have a space for Chris Stapleton,
- 40:29Speaker 2: Like I just move everyone move over this. This guy
- 40:33Speaker 2: needs a space.
- 40:34Speaker 3: A fifth heady.
- 40:36Speaker 2: But but I think that I I just dude is
- 40:40Speaker 2: amazing and I just I one day I want to
- 40:42Speaker 2: meet him. I want to meet him somehow. It's amazing.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Thanks for the time. Really, you guys are the best
- 40:48Speaker 3: ye could have done.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Like what I I love this. I uh, Now you're
- 40:52Speaker 2: gonna have to come on my little podcast and we're
- 40:54Speaker 2: gonna talk about quarterbacking.
- 40:56Speaker 3: How you do it in fourth grade when I was
- 40:58Speaker 3: left handed.
- 40:59Speaker 2: No, once you start thinking about it, about the metaphor,
- 41:03Speaker 2: you'll be like, oh, I know how I.
- 41:06Speaker 3: I wanted wanted Yeah, the chair. I was gonna say
- 41:09Speaker 3: a quarterback intil like tenth grade, just to kind of no,
- 41:12Speaker 3: I know, receiver. And I know you're not even.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Talking funny about it's funny last week or like we're
- 41:17Speaker 2: setting this up, Okay, when do you want to do it?
- 41:19Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh, let's say this is Wednesday, let's
- 41:21Speaker 2: do it early. Early is great, okay, great, and then
- 41:23Speaker 2: all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it's like, oh,
- 41:25Speaker 2: by the way, here's a picture of me high fiving
- 41:27Speaker 2: does Bryant and the game. Then here's the m v
- 41:30Speaker 2: P troop.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Not true, like out of no work.
- 41:32Speaker 2: I didn't say, hey, have you done anything great lately?
- 41:36Speaker 2: You had something?
- 41:36Speaker 3: What happened? It's like, I did you play?
- 41:39Speaker 2: By the way, Steve, I just want you to know
- 41:41Speaker 2: that I was m VP somebody already. Golf was it charity?
- 41:45Speaker 3: Softball was not charity. First of all, I'm a little insulted.
- 41:49Speaker 3: Second of all, sometimes I will fill in for rich Eisen,
- 41:52Speaker 3: who I can come you do this thing? Yeah? I
- 41:55Speaker 3: feel I do. I feel yeah, And so I'll do
- 41:58Speaker 3: his show when he's gone. And I was gonna do
- 42:00Speaker 3: it this week and I was not able to do it.
- 42:03Speaker 3: And so I saw that you were on and you
- 42:05Speaker 3: were talking about playing at the golf tournament, and so
- 42:08Speaker 3: a message and said, hey, how did golf tournament go?
- 42:10Speaker 3: Because I have other friends that were playing, and you were.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Like, it's funny. I was just joking, and you got
- 42:16Speaker 2: your little defensive I'm very defensive right now.
- 42:19Speaker 3: And he's like, I did blah blah, and I was like,
- 42:22Speaker 3: oh cool, well what I was doing?
- 42:24Speaker 2: Well, you're right, there was not a nowhere. You're right,
- 42:27Speaker 2: it was only.
- 42:28Speaker 3: Kind out of nowhere. Look at my trophy. I'm also
- 42:30Speaker 3: good at sports.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Was the belt right? Yes?
- 42:32Speaker 3: Yes, it was ale and just actually the second a
- 42:36Speaker 3: little like wow, yeah, you were just done and I'm
- 42:38Speaker 3: an amazing athlete. Now to conclude what it was? The
- 42:42Speaker 3: Major League Baseball All Star Game. Yeah, it is happening.
- 42:45Speaker 3: That's where I was amazing. I know, no, no, I know.
- 42:47Speaker 3: You said it was like a church league, charity church
- 42:50Speaker 3: league with fourteen year old.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Do you see this? I was just kid there it was.
- 42:55Speaker 2: I just was having fun.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Very insulted, you're amasy, got to tease.
- 43:00Speaker 2: That's fun.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Until we meet again, my friend.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Bobby awesome, Steve, the best, the best, the best. Maybe
- 43:06Speaker 2: we'll play the A, T and T one day.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Yeah, signed this old card for me. Hold on, let
- 43:12Speaker 3: me have a sharpy this that'd be fun. Yeah, record
- 43:14Speaker 3: him because these are my favorite cards because Steve kept
- 43:16Speaker 3: a shirt on for Joyce.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Joyce got Joyce, Joy's got everything.
- 43:20Speaker 3: Thank you, Joyce, Thank you, joy joy Joy thank you joy.
- 43:24Speaker 2: I said it funny.
- 43:26Speaker 3: I'm want to.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Know him about my previous life. She just know this life.
- 43:31Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. He was a he was a
- 43:32Speaker 3: punter for many years.
- 43:34Speaker 2: The best.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Here, Bobby, I'm the greatest. Steve Young. Oh they're great.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Oh they're great. It's both ways, the greatest.
- 43:50Speaker 3: Thank you, Steve.
- 43:50Speaker 2: You're a hero.
- 43:51Speaker 3: That's cool, all right, Steve Young, Thank you, Steve. Thank
- 43:54Speaker 3: you for having us and that's amazing. Thank you.
