- 0:01Speaker 1: And we're done and we're done. Good, thanks for coming. Yeah,
- 0:04Speaker 1: appreciate it.
- 0:06Speaker 2: You talk to the players, Yeah, that's the right, you know,
- 0:10Speaker 2: just you should have lots of how kind of page
- 0:12Speaker 2: came out and seem like I'm.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Perfect night or her day for the where her last
- 0:16Speaker 3: came here before they had said tournament.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Just really to control her exignly. Yeah, you know, that's
- 0:22Speaker 1: what you want to happen, you know, games like the
- 0:29Speaker 1: Creton game where you're trying to win a big East championship,
- 0:35Speaker 1: games like today where it's you know, your day and
- 0:41Speaker 1: it means a lot. You wanna show your best version
- 0:47Speaker 1: of yourself. You know. Doesn't always work out that way,
- 0:51Speaker 1: but sometimes it does. And you know, for Paige, the
- 1:01Speaker 1: you know, the season's been uh it, it's flown by,
- 1:06Speaker 1: you know, so fast, like like they always do. But
- 1:11Speaker 1: I think she's on the right track right now. So
- 1:15Speaker 1: you always wanted death to be special, you know, and
- 1:19Speaker 1: I think today certainly was for her.
- 1:22Speaker 2: M Do you know, can you assess Chatelin's regular season
- 1:26Speaker 2: and what are you looking for in the close season
- 1:28Speaker 2: because her history says that she's a very she called
- 1:31Speaker 2: the whole seasons.
- 1:32Speaker 1: There, Yeah, you can see that you can see why
- 1:36Speaker 1: she would be that. There's a maturity to her. She Uh,
- 1:46Speaker 1: she loves being coached. She's taken on a a vocal role.
- 1:56Speaker 1: You know. It took her about you know, maybe a
- 2:00Speaker 1: uh a month to feel comfortable enough. And she plays
- 2:07Speaker 1: with a lot of confidence, and she carries herself on
- 2:11Speaker 1: the court and off the court with a lot of confidence.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And uh, I think everybody on our team and everybody
- 2:17Speaker 1: on our staff lets her know all the time, you know,
- 2:21Speaker 1: how much she's meant to us, you know, this year,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and I am looking forward to postseason, both the conference
- 2:29Speaker 1: tournament and and the NC Tournament because I think she's,
- 2:37Speaker 1: you know, being a fifth year senior, I think she's
- 2:40Speaker 1: she's gonna add you know, a lot, you know, a
- 2:46Speaker 1: lot to what we're doing, Tom and Maggie.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Any end, m she don't know every player that comes
- 2:52Speaker 4: to your you know, the they think about They look
- 2:54Speaker 4: at the the names up there, and they want to
- 2:57Speaker 4: see their name up there someday.
- 2:58Speaker 1: That's that's the the end goal.
- 3:00Speaker 4: What cost are your mind when somebody like Paige or
- 3:03Speaker 4: you always seemed destined to be able there to take
- 3:06Speaker 4: down that that shroud and you're bus well what goes
- 3:08Speaker 4: to your mind when you see that.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I it's mm mm I. I remember the first time
- 3:20Speaker 1: it happened and and there was.
- 3:25Speaker 5: UH and w it.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Well, the first time it happened with with Carrie Basket
- 3:30Speaker 1: and we didn't have all this and it we never
- 3:36Speaker 1: had a chance to really celebrate it like this. So
- 3:40Speaker 1: Rebecca was probably the first one that ever got to
- 3:43Speaker 1: experience what this feels like and what I what I.
- 3:48Speaker 1: What it means too to me personally is a reminder
- 3:54Speaker 1: that's a huge responsibility when you recruit players with with
- 4:00Speaker 1: that kind of talent. They come with a lot of UH,
- 4:05Speaker 1: a lot of aspirations, a lot of dreams, a lot
- 4:07Speaker 1: of goals and UH, and you feel the weight of
- 4:11Speaker 1: you have to deliver that. You have to put 'em
- 4:13Speaker 1: in position to make sure that they get that. It's
- 4:16Speaker 1: almost like if they don't get it, you failed, you know.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So when they do get to experience something like this,
- 4:25Speaker 1: it kind of validates their work ethic and their commitment
- 4:29Speaker 1: to being great and it makes us as a coaching
- 4:34Speaker 1: staff feel sense of satisfaction. You know, obviously obviously happy
- 4:42Speaker 1: for for them, happy for paige A, but at the
- 4:47Speaker 1: same time a sense of satisfaction. You know, we promised
- 4:53Speaker 1: to get something and we were able to deliver it
- 4:57Speaker 1: and almost your day just help helpful?
- 4:59Speaker 5: Is it?
- 5:00Speaker 6: The start games, there's just always aggression hers her effort
- 5:03Speaker 6: on either side of the all.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah, uh, as I said, we've got we've got certain
- 5:11Speaker 1: lineups that serve certain purposes. And uh, that same lineup
- 5:18Speaker 1: in a different scenario against a different team might not
- 5:22Speaker 1: provide those same results. But for the first time in
- 5:27Speaker 1: a couple of years, we do have the ability to
- 5:32Speaker 1: adapt to what the t what the game needs. And
- 5:35Speaker 1: I thought today Aubrey was just like the other night.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You know, she was instrumental in creating a tone, setting
- 5:44Speaker 1: the tone for you know, how the game was gonna
- 5:49Speaker 1: be played. And it doesn't always turn into easy buckets,
- 5:56Speaker 1: but it does start the process of the other team
- 6:00Speaker 1: feeling like they're constantly under pressure and every pass is
- 6:04Speaker 1: going to be contested, in every dribble and every shot.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know how many five second accounts
- 6:13Speaker 1: we we got today, but that didn't happen a month ago,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you know, So having her really impacts the the whole,
- 6:32Speaker 1: the whole vibe of our defense. Four four or five
- 6:36Speaker 1: second calls four. Yeah, yeah, and the offensive rebounds that
- 6:42Speaker 1: she came up with. So no, that's you know, I am.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I know generally speaking, I know what we're gonna get
- 6:57Speaker 1: from Aubrey and she generally does and fail, you know,
- 7:02Speaker 1: never fails to deliver.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Yeah, along those lines, do you talk about the defense today?
- 7:07Speaker 3: You guys force the twenty four turnovers and then you're
- 7:11Speaker 3: ten of them were in the first five winters of
- 7:13Speaker 3: the game.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, we forced a lot of turnovers, and when
- 7:20Speaker 1: they weren't turning it over, they scored. So I don't
- 7:23Speaker 1: know that our defense was that great today when we
- 7:27Speaker 1: played When we played Marquette last year and in the
- 7:31Speaker 1: biggest tournament, they had twenty six for the game, and
- 7:35Speaker 1: these guys had thirty four at a half and the
- 7:39Speaker 1: only shots they made were threes and layups. So we
- 7:43Speaker 1: were kind of animated at halftime. Let's put that way,
- 7:50Speaker 1: cause I think you can get carried away with We're
- 7:53Speaker 1: scoring a lot of points, so it doesn't matter how
- 7:55Speaker 1: many they get, and that's a bad way to go
- 7:57Speaker 1: into the postseason. And I thought that third quarter we
- 8:00Speaker 1: came out and it was way different than the first half.
- 8:04Speaker 1: So creating turnovers, I I is is really important to
- 8:08Speaker 1: us cause it gets us going transition wise. But uh,
- 8:14Speaker 1: at the the third quarter, we yeah, we executed better,
- 8:18Speaker 1: way better defensively in the third quarter.
- 8:21Speaker 6: Well, like said that I win.
- 8:23Speaker 1: You know, one of the flip side of Tom's question
- 8:25Speaker 1: the page is the one for you know, shouldn't.
- 8:28Speaker 6: Prioritize the physical accolades, but that you sends even just
- 8:31Speaker 6: going into today or during the ceremony, and you said
- 8:34Speaker 6: that like she's realizing, like you know, like I was
- 8:37Speaker 6: able to do all this year and really have that
- 8:39Speaker 6: sense of appreciation for real path or is she more
- 8:42Speaker 6: so just focused on how I had?
- 8:46Speaker 1: You know, that's that's a good question. And if you
- 8:50Speaker 1: that asked me x number of years ago about one
- 8:55Speaker 1: of our players who had that journey in that path
- 8:58Speaker 1: and how do they feel and do they what significance
- 9:03Speaker 1: or what amount of emotion or you know, stuff like that,
- 9:10Speaker 1: I would be able to give you a better answer.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I think with a lot of these with a lot
- 9:14Speaker 1: of these guys today, I don't think they know. I
- 9:17Speaker 1: don't think they I don't think they have the skills
- 9:23Speaker 1: the wherewithal to fully express how they how they really feel.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I think there's there's a there's a reticence about letting
- 9:36Speaker 1: it all come out, letting it putting it all out there,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and letting everybody see this is who I am, and
- 9:43Speaker 1: this is what I feel like, and this is what
- 9:45Speaker 1: it all. I think it's there. I think it's inside
- 9:49Speaker 1: and maybe it'll you know, manifest itself tonight when she's
- 9:54Speaker 1: by herself, or you know, tomorrow practice or maybe a
- 9:59Speaker 1: Nancy tournament game here example, when she'll look up and go,
- 10:03Speaker 1: it's my last time in this building, you know. But
- 10:05Speaker 1: at some point it's gonna it's gonna hit home, and
- 10:11Speaker 1: I hope I'm around to see the reaction. You talk
- 10:14Speaker 1: about it a little bit, Yes, But how did you
- 10:16Speaker 1: like the way Ice came back today? Fantastic? Fantastic? I thought,
- 10:22Speaker 1: you know Ice, Ice thrives on confidence like success. I
- 10:29Speaker 1: should say success gives her confidence and she needs to
- 10:32Speaker 1: feel and taste success, and when she does, she just
- 10:40Speaker 1: blossoms right in front of your eyes on the court.
- 10:43Speaker 1: This is the best, best condition, the best shape she's
- 10:46Speaker 1: been in. And since she's since she got to Connecticut,
- 10:49Speaker 1: she's worked incredibly hard all year long, she's been She's
- 10:55Speaker 1: gotten better and better defensively, She's always been a horrific
- 11:00Speaker 1: past her and you saw that today. I think making
- 11:04Speaker 1: that three at the half halftime buzzer.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Uh.
- 11:07Speaker 1: It's huge for her because she has really really struggled
- 11:11Speaker 1: shooting the ball this year, and I know she she
- 11:15Speaker 1: loves to shoot it and she's pretty good at it.
- 11:18Speaker 1: So not having played in a long time and playing today,
- 11:24Speaker 1: this game is gonna really now. I could have to
- 11:28Speaker 1: be my words, but my guess is a game like
- 11:31Speaker 1: this pushes her forward to uh, to having a great
- 11:36Speaker 1: weekend next weekend like she did last year. Ice is
- 11:39Speaker 1: really really good when she feels like you really need her.
- 11:44Speaker 1: You know, that's what happened last year. You know, she
- 11:47Speaker 1: knew Leah wasn't gonna play, so she felt like, we
- 11:50Speaker 1: really really need her, and we have and she has
- 11:52Speaker 1: no choice. She has to do it. I think when
- 11:55Speaker 1: she feels like, well, we got a bunch of other guys,
- 11:57Speaker 1: though he can sub me out for it, Okay, she
- 12:00Speaker 1: doesn't work as well that way. So hopefully this this
- 12:04Speaker 1: gets her in the right frame of mind for next weekend.
- 12:07Speaker 1: It makes us a different team.
- 12:09Speaker 2: You know, you've created a lot of different parents over
- 12:12Speaker 2: the years of players.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Say today with a former Hall and East.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Player then who tried to stop not that long ago went.
- 12:19Speaker 1: With the Easy's bomb? What what that dynamic dinner with that?
- 12:23Speaker 1: Does it feel a different with her?
- 12:25Speaker 3: And you?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Yeah, what a pain in the ass she was to
- 12:31Speaker 1: play against uh when she was at Georgetown. I mean,
- 12:35Speaker 1: just relentless. Just that's the best way I could describe it.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Just the relentless competitor, tough, I mean, and edgy. Just
- 12:53Speaker 1: I I I I I. I said something to her
- 12:56Speaker 1: today when she came up there, how I said, this
- 12:59Speaker 1: is going by way way too fast and she said, yeah,
- 13:03Speaker 1: I said this is I said this is, this was this,
- 13:06Speaker 1: this was this was fast and she remarked way too fast,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and so did Tim or Dad. So you know, I
- 13:16Speaker 1: think they, like anybody else, I think you want to
- 13:18Speaker 1: try to hold onto it for as long as you can,
- 13:21Speaker 1: you know. But it's funny today. You know Katie Aisy's
- 13:27Speaker 1: mom and then Pam Pam rothelus back then how to
- 13:35Speaker 1: Senior night cause she played for me and now her
- 13:37Speaker 1: daughter is one of our managers. I mean, I you know,
- 13:43Speaker 1: it's like like I really need to be reminded one
- 13:46Speaker 1: more time that I'm old, Like that's just what I need.
- 13:51Speaker 1: You know, kids have started working for me when there
- 13:53Speaker 1: were my grandkid's ages or something like that.
- 13:56Speaker 6: Mike and then Maggie, and then we'll finish up with
- 13:59Speaker 6: you too, you know.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Page Uh was devastated to finally miss some free throw there,
- 14:04Speaker 3: and it's like I was.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Remember ruin her?
- 14:07Speaker 1: What was other?
- 14:07Speaker 4: You know?
- 14:08Speaker 1: Otherwise a pretty cool day for her. Uh uh huh.
- 14:10Speaker 3: She obviously takes a lot of pride in her efficiency.
- 14:12Speaker 3: It cause she's right like ninety percent, she said, fifty
- 14:15Speaker 3: percent from the field, forty from threes is w What
- 14:18Speaker 3: do you think of the efficient ways she's built this season,
- 14:22Speaker 3: built her season.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Yeah, that's been a that's been a point of contention
- 14:26Speaker 1: with her the last couple of years that you know,
- 14:29Speaker 1: there was a point in time earlier season when she
- 14:31Speaker 1: was shooting like sixty percent from the floor, fifty eight
- 14:34Speaker 1: percent from the three point line or some crazy number,
- 14:37Speaker 1: and uh, you know, eighty three percent from the free
- 14:41Speaker 1: throw liners. And that was the contention that we used
- 14:44Speaker 1: to come with all the time, said we gotta get her,
- 14:48Speaker 1: we gotta keep the ball out of her hands at
- 14:49Speaker 1: c crunch time, cause we don't wanna go into the
- 14:51Speaker 1: free throw line, you know, so we we were just constantly,
- 14:55Speaker 1: you know, m picking on her and having fun with
- 14:59Speaker 1: her because we know how how serious she is about
- 15:02Speaker 1: all that that she prides herself on, you know, being
- 15:06Speaker 1: called the most efficient player in America. You know, I
- 15:10Speaker 1: thought it was a little maybe because it's Oscar, it's
- 15:14Speaker 1: a little over dramatic. I thought it was a little much,
- 15:17Speaker 1: you know, the reaction to missing the free throw. I
- 15:22Speaker 1: you know, I just turned around and started talking to
- 15:24Speaker 1: my staff. I didn't need to be witnessed to anything
- 15:27Speaker 1: like that. You know, I'd go home and watch a
- 15:30Speaker 1: movie if I wanted to see that kind of bad acting.
- 15:36Speaker 1: But she she takes great pride in it. Man, she
- 15:40Speaker 1: takes great pride in it, you know, and everything she does.
- 15:44Speaker 1: She got her ask kicked today by by Jenna in
- 15:47Speaker 1: a half court shooting context, and you know, it was like,
- 15:51Speaker 1: you know, she just lost, you know, a national championship game.
- 15:55Speaker 1: So to her, you know, being perfect and being efficient
- 16:00Speaker 1: and being thought of as that that I can do
- 16:05Speaker 1: anything and I can do it better than anybody else
- 16:07Speaker 1: really means a lot to her. Maggie, I've not that
- 16:13Speaker 1: you guys should gears me.
- 16:13Speaker 6: To the postseason was what's the biggest priority this week
- 16:16Speaker 6: before the biggest, biggest terment.
- 16:18Speaker 5: Starts on Saturday.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Uh.
- 16:22Speaker 5: I would say the the thing that we we've been
- 16:28Speaker 5: trying to get better at, and we weren't great at
- 16:30Speaker 5: it today in the first half was doing a better
- 16:34Speaker 5: job of taking away some open looks from the.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Three point line and you know, doing a better job
- 16:42Speaker 1: of our ball swing coverage, because you know, those are
- 16:48Speaker 1: two things that every team, seems like in America wants
- 16:53Speaker 1: to do. You know, there's a ball screen somewhere coming
- 16:56Speaker 1: and there's a bunch of threes going up. Everybody wants
- 16:59Speaker 1: to play that. So going into postseason, I would say,
- 17:06Speaker 1: you know, uh uh, too many of those open threes,
- 17:11Speaker 1: too many mistakes on your bosscon coverage. That's the fastest
- 17:14Speaker 1: way I think to get knocked out in the of
- 17:16Speaker 1: the tournament.
- 17:19Speaker 4: So did you know this often happens this time when
- 17:21Speaker 4: you're one of your former players is in the NCAA
- 17:25Speaker 4: tournament or Wendy Davis got the Saint Joseph near Us
- 17:28Speaker 4: today and it's for a long time coming for her.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it was.
- 17:31Speaker 4: I don't know if she was your first to become
- 17:32Speaker 4: a coach, but what are some of your thoughts on
- 17:34Speaker 4: what she's done in the game.
- 17:39Speaker 1: You know, it's crazy. The kid that played on her
- 17:41Speaker 1: team was the first to go into coaching, Chris Lamb
- 17:44Speaker 1: and actually before that, Megan Pattison, uh now, both of them,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and then Wendy followed. Wendy was the first, I think
- 17:57Speaker 1: to experience the the tremendous success both at Western New
- 18:04Speaker 1: England then at Trinity, you know where she really got
- 18:07Speaker 1: to go in and now it's Saint Joe's. And none
- 18:13Speaker 1: of that surprised me. When Iota you talk about a
- 18:20Speaker 1: kid who was so independent, so self sufficient as a student,
- 18:34Speaker 1: I think all she needed was in September, give me
- 18:38Speaker 1: the syllabus and I'll see you at the finals. And
- 18:43Speaker 1: in basketball, let me play, coach me and I'll do
- 18:50Speaker 1: the rest. Because she never ever missed practice, missday an assignment,
- 19:00Speaker 1: knew how to get open smarter shot at like nobody
- 19:06Speaker 1: else ever in the history of the Big East at
- 19:08Speaker 1: that time, and did it without any any fanfare. I
- 19:17Speaker 1: I I was always unbelievably amazed watching her play. Her
- 19:22Speaker 1: attention to detail was second to none, so I'm sure
- 19:27Speaker 1: she carries that over to her coaching and then snow
- 19:32Speaker 1: no surprise that everywhere she's coached they have tremendous success. Yeah,
- 19:40Speaker 1: I've I've been fortunate, man and sh she was one
- 19:43Speaker 1: of 'em. I mean, the best three points year in
- 19:48Speaker 1: the history of the Big East at that time. If
- 19:51Speaker 1: I'm not mistaken, I'm a traveling here. Yes, I coached.
- 19:56Speaker 6: I just like you mentioned before that you've been a
- 19:58Speaker 6: part of a lot of seniors so operations as a coach.
- 20:01Speaker 6: Stepping into these ceremonies, how do you do feel does
- 20:05Speaker 6: it differ from the past and then just coming into it,
- 20:08Speaker 6: just how do you feel knowing you know it might
- 20:09Speaker 6: be some of these players last time playing before they
- 20:11Speaker 6: embark on their new jerseys.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I would I would say, you know, everything changes. Uh,
- 20:21Speaker 1: there's a there's a difference to what uh what Senior day,
- 20:28Speaker 1: Senior night. There's a difference in the way it's the
- 20:34Speaker 1: way it's evolved from forty years ago, and it probably
- 20:42Speaker 1: should be because everything else is different. Everything else has changed,
- 20:46Speaker 1: Everything else has evolved, well, not everybody's evolved, but things
- 20:50Speaker 1: have have changed for sure. There's a part that hasn't changed.
- 20:59Speaker 1: That part is how much this means to the families
- 21:03Speaker 1: of the kids, that's still the same. That's a the
- 21:09Speaker 1: amount of pride and how how grateful they are that
- 21:18Speaker 1: their kids have had an opportunity to accomplish all these things,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and how they can celebrate with their kids. From a
- 21:27Speaker 1: coaching standpoint, each and every kid that comes through here,
- 21:34Speaker 1: by a time senior Night comes around, there's there's one
- 21:39Speaker 1: or two things that you take from each of them
- 21:43Speaker 1: that you remember the most of anything.
- 21:45Speaker 2: You know.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Some it's more personal, some it's not, but all of
- 21:55Speaker 1: them leave a mark. And I always I'm famous for
- 22:02Speaker 1: always appreciating them way more when they're not here than
- 22:04Speaker 1: when they are here. So I think tonight today is
- 22:08Speaker 1: a reminder to kind of like, you know, you should
- 22:10Speaker 1: probably appreciate it more while it's going on. You know,
- 22:12Speaker 1: I usually wait til they're not here to tell 'em,
- 22:16Speaker 1: you know, I wish you were here.
