- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, everybody, Brian Smith here with the I and team series in your daily influence and today is the power of mindful leadership in high stress environments and oftentimes we all find ourselves in these high stress environments either by our own doing or because of the position we have the doing of the people around us and how being mindful.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_01]: what that can do for us and make us even more powerful leaders and make our teams more powerful.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: One of the most important foundational items for this is your emotional intelligence and actually talking about that within your teams and how your emotional intelligence and as a byproduct,
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: the emotional intelligence that you influence when you maintain yourself through high stress issues.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: Being aware of your emotions, how those emotions are influencing your team, how they're influencing the decision-making process, how they're influencing others in those high stress situations, is really important in having that situation awareness of your own.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: emotions and the emotions of those around you and helping people to understand them, to effectively make thoughtful decisions, maintain that calm and that compose demeanor, that can balance out those high stress situations, those instances inspire confidence and stability for you and the team.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: Also, the people around you, it can help diffuse those high stress issues.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: And as you're doing that, you can stay mindful.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_01]: And what it does is it helps you make clear, better decisions.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: Making decisions under pressure is hard enough.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: Making decisions under pressure when you don't have emotional intelligence is almost impossible.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: We are very impulsive.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: We are influenced by the emotion, not the facts, not the objective issues that were surrounded by, but the emotions that are going on underneath the emotions of ourselves
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: So when we introduce emotional intelligence into these high stress issues, we're better equipped to focus on the present moment.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: It'll help us reduce that mental clutter that comes from too much emotion in our thought process.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: And it'll also help us to not be reactive in our decision making.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: When we do this, we have clarity and perspective.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: We can evaluate the situation as it evolves,
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: and stay objective.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: And if there's a chance for them to be involved in strategies or tactics, it can help us to make sure that we are aligning those strategies with the tactics and our team.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: And as we do these, and as we practice this in our leadership, in our management, we begin
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: and ourselves will begin to see that mindfulness and that it's not just about our own stress, but how it is influencing in a positive way, the stress of our team.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: And when we foster this culture of open communication, of sharing, of communication, of empathy and support.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: As we maintain our emotional intelligence and stay mindful through these situations where there's high stress, you will see your members grow and begin to feel safer and expressing themselves, safer to challenge in an objective way with less emotion, and they'll also give help that they need to to overcome these high stress issues and bring them their best self to the conversation.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: And when we do this,
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: We have to be sure that we have tools in place to diffuse those times when the stress just gets too high, walking away, breathing exercises, meditation sessions, mindful reflection practice, any of these.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_01]: can help us to get rebalanced when the stress has gotten too high.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: And if we encourage our teams to model these behaviors, give them that off-ramp to walk away, slow down balance out and come back to the conversation with a better, emotionally intelligent approach and a mindful approach.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: You will notice that things get done better, decisions get made that are
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: more in line with your core values in your mission and also align with the strategy and tactics that you have planned for.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: When we demonstrate that, it's not just a personal practice, but we're pushing it out to our teams.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's just another valuable tool in your leadership tool box that contributes to the overall health and success of your organization,
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: I hope that if you find yourself in a high stress environment or a high stress situation today's podcast has given you just one to many ideas for you to help balance those stressful situations work through them in an effective way that empowers you and your team to be the best you can be and have the most positive and responsible influence you can in whatever area of influence you find yourself.
