- 0:00Hey, you guys, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the Stillness
- 0:04Happy April. Wow, I do not even know how
- 0:08we're already here, but I'm really expectant for what God
- 0:12wants to do in this new month and continue revealing to us.
- 0:16We have been continuing in this deeper dive through first John,
- 0:22and it has already been so refining for me.
- 0:25The past couple days have been really building on what it means
- 0:29to truly know God. And today it gets super
- 0:34practical because now John is shifting into if you know God,
- 0:39how does that actually show up in the way that you love people?
- 0:44So we're going to be in First John chapter 2, reading through
- 0:48verses 9 through 11 today. Anyone who says I am in the
- 0:54light while holding hatred in his heart toward a fellow
- 0:58believer is still in the darkness.
- 1:01But the one who truly loves a fellow believer lives in the
- 1:05light, and there is nothing in him that will cause someone else
- 1:09to stumble. But whoever hates a fellow
- 1:13believer lives in the darkness, stumbling around in the dark
- 1:17with no clue where he is going, for he is blinded by the
- 1:21darkness. OK, this is one of those
- 1:26passages that is very direct and it's pretty black or white.
- 1:31John is specifically talking about the church, the family of
- 1:35God. This is how we treat our fellow
- 1:37brothers and sisters in Christ. And one of the biggest takeaways
- 1:42that I wrote down is you cannot embody the love and light of
- 1:47Christ if you are living in hate.
- 1:50There is no in between here because love equals light and
- 1:56hate equals darkness. And I think what's interesting
- 2:00is how culture paints love so differently, even right now in
- 2:07our modern age. There's literally a whole show
- 2:10called Love is Blind, and while it sounds nice biblically, love
- 2:16is not actually blind. Love is clear because it is in
- 2:21the light. 1st Corinthians 13 talks all about love
- 2:26specifically, but it says love is patient, love is kind.
- 2:31It does not envy, it does not boast, it's not self seeking.
- 2:36It keeps no record of wrongs. And I encourage you all to go
- 2:40back and read that full chapter because there are so many great
- 2:44qualities and descriptions for love.
- 2:47But that is not vague, it's not blurry, and it's also not based
- 2:52on feelings. It is so clearly defined.
- 2:57It's visible. It's rooted here in the truth,
- 3:00in Scripture. Love lives in the light.
- 3:04So I just want to ask you guys, when you love people, is it
- 3:09centered around you, what you can get out of it or how it
- 3:13makes you feel? Or does it actually point back
- 3:17to Jesus with the goal of reflecting Him?
- 3:22Another thing that stood out to me is how the Bible warns us
- 3:25about things like bitterness, envy, jealousy, and disunity.
- 3:31Ephesians 4 verse 31 literally says to get rid of all
- 3:35bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with
- 3:39every form of malice. Malice is evil, so that language
- 3:44is strong. It literally says get rid of it.
- 3:48Because ultimately those things, however small they may seem in
- 3:53the moment, they pull us Into Darkness.
- 3:56And when I think about darkness, I just kept picturing this game
- 4:01I used to play when I was little called Murder in the Dark.
- 4:04And in that game, it's super fun, but it's so thrilling
- 4:09because everything feels uncertain and you cannot see
- 4:13clearly. All the lights are off, you're
- 4:16anxious, I get kind of jumpy, and you're unsure of what's
- 4:20around you, when something is going to grip you or a person's
- 4:24going to find you hiding. And that is ultimately what
- 4:28holding on to bitterness does. It creates this internal
- 4:32environment where things feel tense and unpredictable and it's
- 4:37like you're walking on egg shells.
- 4:40But reality check, that is not how we are meant to live as
- 4:46believers, especially in the church.
- 4:49Instead, Scripture calls us higher.
- 4:52Romans 12 verse 18 says if possible, as far as it depends
- 4:57on you, live at peace with everyone.
- 5:00Hebrews 12 verse 14, make every effort to live in peace with
- 5:05everyone. Not just like peace, not just
- 5:10hope for peace, but pursue it. And I think this is where we
- 5:14sometimes can get it twisted because avoiding conflict is not
- 5:20the same thing as pursuing peace.
- 5:23It's not loving to just ignore tension or stay silent.
- 5:28To not quote UN quote, ruffle feathers, we talked about this
- 5:33yesterday, but real love is not passive.
- 5:36It's active. It's in actions that we see true
- 5:40love. Sometimes love has to tell the
- 5:43truth. You have to have that hard
- 5:46conversation. It steps into discomfort for the
- 5:50sake of preserving unity and harmony, avoidance.
- 5:55It might feel easier in the moment, sure, but it doesn't
- 5:59actually bring real peace. It's only delaying it.
- 6:04So here's something that I was reflecting on that I'm going to
- 6:06bring to y'all. Am I avoiding conflict to stay
- 6:10comfortable? Or am I willing to pursue peace
- 6:15even when it's costly, even when it's uncomfortable?
- 6:20All of this ties back to the heart of the gospel.
- 6:23As always, the gospel is a message of reconciliation. 2nd
- 6:28Corinthians 5 says we have been reconciled to God, so now we
- 6:33carry that same ministry into our relationships in our
- 6:37everyday lives. So the way that we live out our
- 6:41faith is seen in how we love people.
- 6:46Your Christian love is a choice, It's not a feeling.
- 6:51If we're honest, there will be people that we don't just
- 6:56naturally connect with. There's going to be some people
- 6:59who frustrate us or hurt us. But love is not based on whether
- 7:05it feels easy, whether it's simple, whether it just clicks.
- 7:10Think back to Jesus. Do you think that he felt like
- 7:16forgiving the people who were mocking him, rejecting him, who
- 7:21put him on that cross? Yet He chose to love anyway.
- 7:28So ask yourself, am I waiting until it feels natural to love
- 7:33someone? Or am I choosing it because I'm
- 7:37a follower of Jesus? Because that is what He has
- 7:40called me to. And I loved this perspective
- 7:44shift. You may not always want to love
- 7:47someone in your human nature, but you get to love them because
- 7:52it's in those moments that you reflect Jesus the most clearly.
- 7:57Galatians 2 verse 20 says it is no longer I who live, but Christ
- 8:02who lives in me. So when we choose to love, even
- 8:07when it's so hard, it's not just us trying harder, it's actually
- 8:13Jesus working within us, through us by his Spirit.
- 8:18And instead of thinking I have to love this person, what if we
- 8:23reframe that question as I actually get to love this
- 8:26person? What if we viewed it as an
- 8:29opportunity to reflect Jesus, to walk forward into the light, to
- 8:35be a part of the ministry of reconciliation?
- 8:41Practically, that might look like choosing respect, choosing
- 8:45patience, choosing to show up with kindness and sacrifice even
- 8:50when the feeling is not always there.
- 8:54But love is not just emotional, it's intentional.
- 9:00Scripture even says Ephesians 4, verse 26, do not let the sun go
- 9:04down while you are still angry. That is a command.
- 9:10So we don't let things just sit and simmer or not to let
- 9:14bitterness grow. We deal with it with God and
- 9:19when needed, with the people around us.
- 9:22So as you go about your day, I just want to challenge you to
- 9:27ask yourself, who is God inviting me to love differently
- 9:30and radically today? Because it's not based on your
- 9:34feelings and it's not based on convenience.
- 9:38It's based on our love for Jesus and Our Calling.
- 9:43So let's go ahead and closeout in prayer.
- 9:47Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus to be the
- 9:52perfect example of your love, your steady love, your selfless
- 9:59love. Would you help us to love in a
- 10:02way that really does show you to others?
- 10:07It's not focused on ourselves, on what we need or what's
- 10:11comfortable in the moment, but how we can reflect You.
- 10:16Would You give us the courage to step into those hard
- 10:19conversations? Would You clothe us in humility
- 10:23so that we can forgive and give us the grace to let go of what
- 10:29we were never meant to carry on our own?
- 10:31Father, teach us how to pursue peace with sincere hearts and
- 10:38how to show up with hearts that are willing, even if it's
- 10:42uncomfortable. I pray that you would shape the
- 10:45way that we see people. Let us see others through your
- 10:50lens, God, so that our love can point back to You in everything
- 10:54we do. I pray that you would lead us in
- 10:58this. We need your help, God.
- 11:00We don't want to rely on our own strength or ability, but on Your
- 11:04power through Your Spirit. I pray this on your name, Jesus.
- 11:09Amen. OK y'all.
- 11:11Well, that's today's episode. Praying that you'll have a great
- 11:15rest of your Wednesday and a wonderful start to April.
- 11:19I cannot get over that, but it is going to be a solid month and
- 11:23I'm so looking forward to all that's in store.
- 11:26I'll see you on the next episode.
