- 0:00SPEAKER_00: On this episode of the Tailgate podcast, we are proud to announce our new sponsor, Def Charts, the most innovative site to track player movements and ratings where those NFL players stack up on their own teams.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And they also have some pretty awesome custom team merge.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I like to think of it as a PFF meeting our lads, but with a little bit more depth.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Check them out at def charts dot com or deaf underscore charts on Twitter and Instagram.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Today we are going to go through some MLB divisional round updates, get you up to date on all those series and what's going on around Major League Baseball.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: We will talk WMBA and get you up to date with those two semifinal series that are taking place in the W before we get to our college football weekly edition recap/slash preview.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And that, you know, includes our tail, the tailgate locks.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: We have a jam-packed show, so let's get to it.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Starting in the WNBA, we have two semifinal series taking place right now.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: They both kicked off on Sunday afternoon for their best of five series, one of them taking place between the Golden State Valkyries and the Las Vegas Aces.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: The Valkyries have had one of the best WNBA defenses all season, and the Aces have Asia Wilson, Kelsey Plum, um, just to name a few as great stars.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Chelsea Gray as well, can't forget her.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and then the other matchup is the Atlanta Dream, led by defensive player of the year Angel Reese against the New York Liberty and all of their stars, mainly Sabrina Ionescu and Brianna Stewart.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So two really interesting matchups, two very different stylized teams in each of the matchups.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So should be great basketball.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So we got game one on Sunday.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Um, after being named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, Angel Reese, she really helped lead the charge for the dream in game one.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: She had four steals, three blocks, seven rebounds to go along with 17 points to help beat the Liberty in game one.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, on the other series, Gabby Williams, she led all scores in in game one.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And the Valkyries, they continue to play really, really exceptional defense.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: They took game one over the aces, 71 to 60.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: The game twos for both of these series will take place on Wednesday, October 7th.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: So if you're following along these two series and trying to keep up with what's going on in the WNBA, we will get both matchups in game two taking place on Wednesday.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So just to recap, the Valkyries took game one over the Aces and the Atlanta Dream took game one over the Liberty.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: So we are staring down the barrel of two potential massive upsets uh if the aces nor the Liberty are able to make it into the WNBA finals.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Let's move along to some baseball updates.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: We will start in the American League where the Rays got seven and two-thirds, no hit innings from Drew Rasmussen.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And despite a great start from Garrett Cole, he picked pitched six innings, only gave up one solo home run.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: The Rays were able to take game one, one to nothing.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Um, kind of the story of what's been going on with the Yankees offense not able to hit against the Rays, and for large stretches of this whole season, have not been able to hit and drive runners across, move runners around the base pass.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: And starting with uh the game on Saturday, they couldn't even get a hit going.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Um, really difficult game there for the ray for the Yankees against the Rays.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: In game two on Monday night, the Yankees committed as many errors as they had hits, which is never a good sign.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Um, no matter what that number is.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Um I was trying to think of like what would actually be less bad in that situation.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Like maybe you only got one hit and you gave up one error, but and nonetheless, in game two, the Yankees committed four errors and they only had four hits in the entire game, and they spoiled a great game from Ben Rice where he hit two solo home runs, and the Rays ended up winning this game five to two, despite a pretty good start from Cam Schlittler as well.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Um, they the Rays were just able to play their branded small ball and and take game two.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: So now the Yankees are on the brink of elimination.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: They will need to win game three in New York to stay alive, as well as the game four and five matchups as well.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And the other ALDS series we have going on, it's two teams from the AL Central, much like in the first series that we mentioned, uh facing two teams from the AL East.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: We have two teams from the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox uh and the Cleveland Guardians.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: So in game one, the White Sox got a mammoth three-run blast from everybody's favorite Japanese star.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: No, I'm not talking about you, Shohei.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about Muneta Murakami, who is the lead front runner to be the AL rookie of the year.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: He just continues to shine like a true star in these playoffs.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, and the White Sox shut out the Guardians in game one on the road to take the first game three to zero.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: The only scoring came on that three-run home run from Murakami.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And then in game two, pretty crazy bullpen appearance here uh from Sean Burke.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: He came in relief.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: He pitched five and a third innings of one hit, one run ball.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: That one run was given up after he was removed from the game to that one base runner he allowed.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: The White Sox scored three in the sixth inning, and they take game two as well on the road, four to three.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: So that sets up both American League series.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: The Rays and the White Sox are both up two games to zero in both of the AL series.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Now, over in the National League, game one between the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers took place on Saturday, and Tariq Scuble pitched six innings, only allowing two hits and one run.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: He notched up seven strikeouts, uh, powered by three home runs, really, all across up and down the lineup from the Dodgers.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Um, Hernandez, Kyle Tucker, um, and Max Muncie all hit home runs in game one, and the Dodgers take game one, five to three.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: But in game two, the Braves ran up Blake Snell's pitch count.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: He pitched 90 pitches uh in a little over three and two-thirds innings.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: The Braves managed to fend off the Dodgers in what was essentially a bullpen game for Atlanta, and they took game two, three to two to even that series.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, and they were the only, spoiler alert before we get to our last series, the only road team to win a game, or excuse me, the only series to not be two to zero, um, given that the White Sox were the road team and they won both of their first two games.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: But the Braves were the only team to even up a series from whoever won game one.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: So impressive stuff there, impressive resiliency from the Braves to be able to fight back and win game two.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: So game three will take place on Tuesday, October the sixth.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: And then over in our last series, the Brewers and the Padres, a little bit of controversy found its way into the end of game one.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Not major, but just one of those weird things that you don't really see that often.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Not many baseball teams play in a domed or in a canvas stadium to begin with.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: But nonetheless, in the ninth inning, Ty France of the Padres hit what most people thought was the game tying home run in the ninth inning, but it hit the roof and was ultimately knocked down and caught by Jackson Curio.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: And the Brewers took game one three to two.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: But in game two, the Padres got another great start from Mason Miller or from uh Michael King before Mason Miller, who has been one of the best bullpen arms in all of baseball, gave up a two-run single in the ninth inning, and the Brewers walked off for a four to three win and a two-zero series lead.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: So, like I said, all four of the uh out of the four divisional matchups, three of them, the Rays, the White Sox, and the Brewers are all up two games to nothing, just needing one more win to advance.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: The only team that was able to muster back and get a win in game two after losing game one was the aforementioned Atlanta Braves.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: So we'll be interesting to see if we get three sweeps in the divisional round, um, or if some of these teams are able to fight back now that we're gonna change locations for game three.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: So more to come later on from the Tailgate Cam podcast.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: We always talk baseball here on the Tailgate Cam podcast.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, we will keep everybody in the Tailgate updated as the playoffs roll along all the way through the World Series.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Coming up next, we have our college football recap along with our weekly tail, the tailgate locks.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Stick around.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Now it is time to talk our weekly college football recap as well as our look ahead preview segment for all of the biggest matchups for week six.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: So we have to start with one of the biggest games that took place over the weekend.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Number two, Ohio State went to Iowa City.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: It was the site of College Game Day where we saw the great and infamous Caitlin Clark join the set of College Game Day.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Um, Iowa did not get off to a great start in this game.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Ohio State got a really good performance from Julian Sand.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And I I don't know what else can be said about Jeremiah Smith at this point.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: He just continues to dominate every Buckeye's record.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: He is now the all-time Ohio State receiver leading receiver in yards, in receptions, and receiving touchdowns.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: There simply is not an Ohio State record that that man does not own.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: He is one of the most dominant college receivers we have ever seen.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: And at this point, Ohio State doesn't even try to expand their offense around him in this game alone.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: He had 12 more catches, um, two more touchdowns.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: He just is unguardable.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: I think he should clearly be the front runner for the Heisman at this point.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Um, but a really impressive performance from Ohio State.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: They won this game 31 to 14, and it was obviously Iowa's first loss after knocking off Michigan in in week four, but really a game that it seemed like Ohio State dominated from front to end and wasn't as close as that score really led on.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: For most of the game, Iowa had six points off two field goals.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: They got a late touchdown uh towards the end of the second half where they were able to go for two and make that scuse me, that score look a little bit more reasonable, but ultimately ultimately another game that Ohio State was able to dominate against a Big Ten opponent and move along in their quest to get back to the college football playoffs as well as the Big Ten title game.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Another big shakeup in the SEC, fresh off of their big win against number four Ole Miss.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: The Florida Gators jumped all the way up to the eighth ranked spot in the AP poll, and they went out to face number 25 ranked the Missouri Tigers.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: This was an emotional turmoil for your boy here at the Tailgate Cam podcast.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: An alum of the University of Missouri graduated in the class of 2017 and a lifelong Florida Gator fan.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Grew up in the Tim Tebow era, uh, the Billy Donovan era for basketball.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: So always a very complex and confusing day when the Florida Gators and the Missouri Tigers face off in any sport, whether it's football, basketball, even baseball, um can be pretty confusing.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: But this one was not confusing on the field.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Mizzou completely dominated the Gators on both lines of scrimmage.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: They dominated them on the offensive line.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Um, Jamal Roberts had 24 carries for 211 yards and three touchdowns in this game.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: A couple of really long runs uh in the second half that really blew the score open.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: And then on the defensive side, they were able to limit what was one of the you know leading Heisman contenders in full in the form of running back Jaden Ball.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: He was limited to 12 carries for just 13 yards, by far his worst performance of the season.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Um, he hadn't had a game under 100 yards yet this year, so that was really the key to the game, right?
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: There was Mizzou was able to load the box, dared Florida to throw the ball.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: And then on the other side of things, Mizzou's best asset is Florida's biggest weakness.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: And they have it in Austin Simmons.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: He is one of the most underrated and under-discussed quarterbacks in all of college football.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's because he's left-handed, maybe it's because he plays at Mizzou, but it's gonna be hard to continue to ignore that guy moving forward.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: He has 13 touchdowns on the season with zero interceptions, and it just never seems like he gets happy feet in the pocket.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: I really think he could be, if not already, um, one of the best, if not the best quarterbacks Eli Drinkwitz has ever had at Mizzou, um, or really, if off the top of my memory, ever had as a college football head coach dating back to his time at Appalachian State.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Austin Simmons has a canon for an arm.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Um, he really knows how to work with his his two primary receivers, Caden Lee and Donovan Alubinay.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: And this was also the first time that we saw some real explosiveness from Caleb Goody, who was another um transfer portal addition for the Missouri Tigers at receiver.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: And then, like I mentioned, Jamal Roberts.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they haven't had Ahmad Hardy all season, but Jamal Roberts was able to really, really put an exclamation point on this game and position Mizzou in a good spot to continue to be in some competitive moments in big games and challenge potentially to make it to the college football playoff.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: But if anything else, my biggest takeaway from this game is that the SEC is a grind.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: We can do the who beat who game dating back several weeks, starting with LSU losing to Ole Miss, Ole Miss losing to Florida, Florida losing to Mizzou, and the grind just goes on.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: You know, if you are not locked in and ready to rebound every week in the SEC, somebody's gonna come in and beat you.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly what we saw as well in the next game that we're gonna discuss.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Alabama went to Starkville, Mississippi, and absolutely put the beat down on the Super Camario Bros Heisman campaign.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: They ended up winning this game 56 to 23.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Alabama quarterback Keelan Russell, he just continues to absolutely dominate, delivered another great performance for Alabama.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: He accounted for 301 total yards with four total touchdowns, three of them coming through the air.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Camario Taylor on his side of things really began this game uh in in pretty astounding fashion.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: A bad, like kind of pump fake loss ball that he lost on the first drive that really spurred the momentum and got things rolling in a negative way for Mississippi State's offense for much of the day.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Then they rebounded and on the next possession threw what was a really bad interception, just kind of staring down his receiver in the short flat as he was rolling out to his left and just chucked it up to the DB as he ran in front of the receiver.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: And really all day he was never able to get back on track.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: He actually left the game hurt, and their backup quarterback Puckett came in and played most, if not all, of the fourth quarter.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: And aside from the two quarterbacks and their kind of contrasting days, the big story here that I want to highlight is defensive coordinator for Alabama, Kane Womack.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Their defense has forced 13 turnovers this year, and they also lead the nation with four pick sixes.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: This is gonna set up a very, very interesting matchup with Georgia coming into town this weekend.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: It was a game that we will discuss on the week six preview, but a really, really impressive performance from Alabama yet again.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: By far their biggest test of the season so far, and they really answered the call with a thunderous victory in Starkville.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: USC, they took a bad loss to Oregon in week four, and they responded uh to Lincoln Riley's credit.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: They really did respond and get a win against Washington.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: While Washington's offense might be officially cooked, I don't know what is going on with Jed Fish and Demon Williams, but I'm sure LSU is looking around saying, Thank the Lord, we did not pay Demon Williams all that money, and we got Sam Levitt throwing picks down here in Baton Rouge instead.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Because man, that Washington offense has been very, very difficult to watch.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: But on the flip side of things, USC managed to hold this game late on defense, which I thought was the biggest sign here for USC and finding some life later on in the season.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: There is still a path for USC to contend and make some noise in the Big Ten as they still have matchups at home against Ohio State and Indiana on the road.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: And suddenly that last game, that rivalry week matchup, that battle for LA against UCLA is shaping up to be a tremendous game.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: UCLA is still undefeated.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: They are ranked in their first year with head coach Bob Chesney, and that looks like a tremendous game.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: So the path is there for USC.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: I I wouldn't say that I necessarily have full faith in USC.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: It's more, I just don't trust this defense.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: They has had a lot of issues, very leaky coverage.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Most of their best players on defense, which this is kind of a good and a bad thing, but most of their best players on defense are freshmen or sophomores, which that's great for the future.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: But for a team that has a senior quarterback and they're trying to win now and get into the playoffs this year, that's not what you want.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: You you should have should have probably attacked the transfer portal a little bit harder on the defensive side.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately can't knock them too bad.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: They were able to get a significant win here against Washington and move on with another victory.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: And this really derails Washington's season.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Any any possible slivers of hope that Washington could maybe sneak in to the Big Ten title game or into the college football playoffs with their quarterback Devin Williams should be officially written off at this point.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: There was a pretty exciting matchup Friday night in Blacksburg, Virginia between Virginia Tech and the Hokies and the Pitt Panthers who came into town.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: Both teams came into this game 4-0.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: This was a tremendous back and forth game.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Ethan Grunkermeyer was throwing all over the place, also threw a couple times to Pitt.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: And then on the other side, Mason Heinschel, a guy that was one of our notable performances of the week, was really tremendous in this game.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: One guy that I have to highlight, even though Virginia Tech lost this game, is their tight end, Luke Reynolds, who came over from Penn State in the transfer portal.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: He is a total beast.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: He leads all of college football tight ends in catches, TDs, and is only one yard behind the college football tight end yards leader.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Um he has 373.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: The all the all cop all college football tight end leader in yardage has 374.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Virginia Tech did miss a late field goal as time expired to allow Pitt to this week move into the top 25.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: And they set up another pretty big matchup with North Carolina for themselves this week.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: So a big win for the Pitt Panthers and Pat Narduzzi.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Tough loss at home, especially given the fact that they had a real opportunity to win with that field goal kick there at the end.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: But ultimately, a strong win for Pitt and a big moment for Pat Narduzzi.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Last Friday night there was another pretty big result.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Northwestern opened up their new stadium.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: At Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: And they hosted the Penn State Nittany Lions fresh off of their collapse at home against the Wisconsin Badgers.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Penn State took on the road to travel to Evanston for a Friday night matchup, and they got spanked by those boys at Northwestern.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: 34 to 13.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: Tough Friday night for James Franklin and Penn State.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: The only difference from other years was this was happening in two different games instead of just one.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: The Penn State offense has become near unwatchable.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: They are the Penn State Cyclones moving forward until they're able to score more than 20 points on offense.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Rocco Becht has one of the lowest air yards per attempt in all of college football.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Their offensive efficiency is in the toilet.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: They have a brutal time trying to throw the ball when they need to.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: And so teams just load up the run and stop the run, and it slows down that offense to a point where they cannot recover.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: And Penn State's defense is not, you know, exceptionally loaded with all Big Ten players, all Americans, or anything like that.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: So they're having a really hard time staying in a lot of these games that you see, like Northwestern, they ran all over Penn State.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: They had two running backs account for over 160 yards, four total rushing touchdowns, one of them coming from their quarterback, Aiden Childs.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: And it's clear Northwestern fights for David Braun.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Um, they put up a hell of an effort against Indiana.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: They were able to now obviously beat Penn State, and they are now four and one in uh the you know, this new look offense with Aiden Childs that they brought over from Michigan State.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: And there's a lot to like there in Evanston, Illinois about these Northwestern Wildcats.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: A couple other scores that I I think kind of stood out before we go through some other notable results, but BYU defeated TCU on the road in Fort Worth, Texas.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: BYU remains undefeated.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: They are probably looking ahead, I would have to assume, to this matchup they have looming with Notre Dame in the coming weeks.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: But a big win for BYU and sophomore quarterback Bear Bachmeyer, Klana Sitake, got that team to get the job done in what was I thought was going to be a really tough spot.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: Um on our tail the tailgate picks last week.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: I actually had TCU plus six and a half, so pretty tough loss there for TCU and the Hornfrogs, but uh another strong win for BYU to go on the road and get a win in a hostile environment like Fort Worth, and then another really um just disappointing result.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: That's really the only way to describe it.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Disappointing result for Lenore Sellers.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: I know there's a lot of Lenore Sellers fans geared towards the NFL draft and what he could potentially be as a NFL prospect, but Shane Beamer's seat is getting hotter by the second.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: They hosted Kentucky at home on Saturday and ended up getting defeated 35 to 34.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: Kentucky went for two in overtime, and that was all that she needed.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: And South Carolina dropped the game at home against Kentucky, and the hot seat is red hot now against Shane Beamer.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: A few other notable results.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Wake Forest, they need to be respected.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: They played Miami really, really tough, and now they move to four and one.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: They absolutely housed Stanford at home 57 to 3.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: Gio Lopez just kind of looks like he fits into that offense.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Um, Carlos Hernandez, their receiver, is one of the more exciting receivers in all of college football.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: If you have a chance to watch a wake game later on this season, check them out.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: They have a really fun offense.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Jake Dickert is one of the better young coaches now in his second year with Wake Forest, um, coming over from Washington State.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: They really have their ship humming along well.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Impressive win for Wake Forest against Stanford.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Uh Florida State, they hosted Virginia and Bo Prabula, and they ran all over all over the Cavaliers.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: And I don't really mean they, because I really just mean Ashton Daniels.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: He had over 125 yards and five rushing touchdowns for a quarterback.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: They defeated Virginia 38-7 at home in Tallahassee to set up a game between the suddenly surging in two winning games in a row, Florida State Seminoles against the now spiraling uh two and three Louisville Cardinals, who just lost a tough game to NC State last week.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: And this Friday night could be a firable offense if one of those coaches were to lose that game against each other.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, otherware, other places, James Madison continues their undefeated start with a 45 to 17 win over Marshall.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: DJ Lagway threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: And Baylor routes Arizona State in Tempe 55 to 19.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Another Big 12 result that I thought stood out.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Cincinnati suffered their first loss of the season on the road to now a hot Arizona team 34-7.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: So both of those teams moved to 4-1.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Not eliminated from the Big 12 race completely, but a definite hard loss for the Bearcats there in Tucson.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Tennessee defeated Auburn.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: They hosted uh Byron Brown, Alec Golish, and the Auburn Tigers.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: And number 17, Tennessee got the win 24-14, thanks in large part to a tremendous effort from their running back, Deshaun Bishop, who had 220 rushing yards and three touchdowns for the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: A few other notable performances.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Braden Atkinson of Oregon State, that guy can really sling the football around.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: He was 31 of 34 for 427 yards and five touchdowns as they rolled past Colorado State 56-26 in their Pac-12 opener.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: Iowa State running back Aiden Flora ran 22 times for 212 yards and three touchdowns to help knock off West Virginia in a very exciting noon Eastern kickoff from this past Saturday.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: They won 45-42.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: A game I just mentioned, James Madison and their win over Marshall.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: They were led by George Petway, their running back, who had 14 carries for 206 yards and two touchdowns.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: What an average yard per carry there, with 14 carries bringing up 206 yards, well over 15 yards per carry.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Memphis quarterback Marcus Stokes, one of my favorite players to watch all season, the West Florida University transfer.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: He was 20 of 25 for 318 yards and five touchdowns in their conference opener in the American as Memphis moves to four and one overall, thanks to a 59-8 victory over winless 0-5 Charlotte, who might be one of the worst teams in all of college football.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: So let's move on to week six and our tail, the tailgate picks.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Our current record on the year, for anybody that hasn't been following along and might be new, our current college football record this year is 26-21 and one.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: We are positive 2.55 units.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Last week we were four and four.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: We netted out negative 0.3 units.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: So frustrating week there.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Couple games that probably shouldn't have gone our way that did, couple that probably should have gone our way that did not.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: That's just the name of the game.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: But thankfully, we still have a winning mark on the entire season.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: So it's time to tail the tailgate.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: So one of the games that we have to start with, a game that I've mentioned already in our recap of week five, looking ahead to week six is the number two Georgia Bulldogs rolling into Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: Bama comes into this game favored by one and a half and fifty-two and a half is our game total.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: A lot to break down here about this game.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Gunnar Stockton is an underrated quarterback.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: I will say that.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: This is also going to be Georgia's first real test when you consider some of the opponents that they played.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: They have already played another SEC game, but they have opened their season so far this year against Georgia, which they or against Oklahoma, which they won 41 to 13.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: They also took on Arkansas and beat them 45 to 17.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Just this past weekend, they um hosted Vanderbilt and beat them.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: So they are already 3-0 in SEC play.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: They also defeated um Western Kentucky 70 to 20, uh, but just not a lot of tests so far for the Georgia Bulldogs.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Um, this by far will be their hardest test of the season.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: Alabama's defense, as I mentioned, is able to force turnovers.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: This is going to be in Alabama, so it's going to be a very difficult environment for Gunnar Stockton and that Georgia offense.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: The counter to Alabama's ferocious defense that is forcing all these turnovers is Georgia has a very senior laden team, especially on their offensive side.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: And they also have a very, very good offensive line, maybe the best in all of college football.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: Um, that will really help spark them in this game.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: But on the flip side, Alabama has this sophomore quarterback, Keelan Russell, who has been absolutely tremendous.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: Everything that he was billed to be as a freshman last year and as a high school recruit has come true on the field this year so far.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: One of his best games, probably his best performance as uh the starting quarterback for Alabama just came a few days ago in their win over Mississippi State, where, like I said earlier, he accounted for four total touchdowns.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: But this is really a spot where I could see this game going to the over.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: I like both of these offenses a great deal.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: But in this situation, I I know that Georgia is probably the better team, but the fact that they are in Tuscaloosa, I think Alabama will be ready for this game.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: And Kalen De Boer is one of the best coaches in all of college football in ranked versus ranked matchups.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: That guy knows how to get his team ready to play a big game.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take Alabama moneyline.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: Our next game comes in the Big Ten.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: Number 21, undefeated, 5-0, UCLA.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: They traveled to Austin Stadium in Eugene, Oregon, where Oregon finds themselves minus 11 and a half on the spread, and 58 and a half is the total set for the game.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: So when I look at this game, obviously we're unsure of the status of Dante Moore if he will play following that pretty vicious head injury he suffered against UC or USC two weeks ago, and now coming off of a bye.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: Will we see Dylan Rayola?
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Will we see Dante Moore?
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: We have not gotten any word from Dan Lanning.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Obviously, they were off of a bye last week, so would there would have been no game status for the previous matchup?
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Um, and so hard to speculate there.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: I would assume based off the nature of the hit.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: I am not a brain doctor uh by any stretch of the imagination, but I would assume based off the nature of the hit and how recent it was, now you know, 10 days out from when that occurred, I would say that it's probably unlikely that we see Dante Moore play in this game.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: Honestly, could be unlikely that we see Dante Moore play again this season if he starts to turn his sights towards the NFL.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: And then on the flip side, uh UCLA.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: I keep mentioning the fact that new head coach Bob Chesney, who came in from James Madison, where they made it to the college football playoff last year, very similar in style and energy to a John Summerall who came from Tulane into Florida, but a lot of energy, a really good recruiter, and he brought his stud running back Wayne Knight from James Madison with him.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: And Nico Imaliava, he has really taken some strides this year.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: They have some really interesting receivers as well.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: Mikey Matthews, the Tennessee transfer, um is the big standout there.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Oregon, they do have tremendous receivers.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Jeremiah McClellan, Jacorian, DeCorian, um French, they are Decorian Moore, excuse me.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: They have a lot of really explosive receivers there in Oregon.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: But when I think about this matchup, you know, a second game with Dylan Rayola, if that happens to be the case, I don't know how caught off guard by Dylan Rayola, UCLA will be.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: I I don't know that UCLA has the capacity to win this game, but I do think that that back door will stay open for UCLA to cover.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: I think this is too many points.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: Even if Dante Moore plays, you Oregon has struggled to put anybody away other than really USC at certain stretches of that game.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take UCLA and the Bruins on the spread plus 11 and a half.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: Feels like too many points to me.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna roll with the Bruins.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: The Red River rivalry, or as what I saw on Twitter today, the Rockstone rivalry because these two offenses cannot score.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: So Texas, number one Texas, takes on their bitter rival, the Sooners from Oklahoma, where Texas is an eight and a half point favorite.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: The total is set at 39.5.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: In Texas, they continue to play tremendous defense.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: They have one of the best defenses in all of college football.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: And honestly, so does Oklahoma.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Um, both of these teams are extremely prone to turnovers, especially John Mateer, as we all have very well seen so far through the college football season.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: Um, and in the last two matchups against Texas, Oklahoma has not scored a touchdown.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: They have field goal, field goal, field goal, nine total points in the last two matchups.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: Texas seems to have you know figured out a way to shut down this Oklahoma attack, whether it's John Matee, whether it was Michael Hawkins a couple years ago.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take the under 39.5.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: This under actually opened at 42 and got all the way down to 39 and a half really quickly.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take the under 39 and a half here in the Red River rivalry.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: I just don't think that Oklahoma will be able to consistently move the ball on Texas.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: And I don't think that Texas has the capacity really right now, from what I've seen from this offense, to really take advantage of a very stingy Oklahoma defense.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: My fear here is that there could be some quit in Oklahoma, but this is a rivalry game.
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: They should not be quitting in this game, even if it gets a little bit out of hand.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: You know, 21 to nothing, I think, could be realistic.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: 21 to 3 could be realistic.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna take the under 39 and a half here in the Red River rivalry.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: Now let's go back to Columbia, Missouri, where the Texas AM Aggies, fresh off of their win last week, traveled to number 14, Mizzou.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Mizzou is favored in this game by three and a half points.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 48 and a half.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: You know, when I think about this game, Marcel Reed was a quarterback that I was pretty high on coming into this season, and it has not looked good.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: No other way to say it.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: It does not look good.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: Their loss to Kentucky was almost 100% on Marcel Reed's shoulders.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: Their defense played exceptionally well.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: They outgained Kentucky in that game.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: And then again, in their loss to LSU, they just couldn't do anything on offense.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: And I do think that their offense will be able to make some plays in the running game against Mizzou.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately, I just trust Mizzou at home here against Texas AM.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take Mizzou minus three and a half.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: A big matchup in the Big Ten, undefeated number seven, Indiana, and the reigning champion Hoosiers travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the five and oh and current uh lanterns cameo star, head coach Matt Rule for the Nebraska Corn Huskers.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, Indiana comes into this game favored by seven and a half on the road.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 51 and a half.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: When I think about this game, I know that Lincoln will be fired up for this huge matchup, this huge opportunity.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: One of the biggest moments that Nebraska has had maybe since Matt Rule became their head coach.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: Um, they're 5-0.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: They've had a very, very easy schedule, but honestly, so has Indiana.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: I think there could be a lot of back and forth in this game, especially in the first half.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: I think both of these defenses could be exposed a little bit more so leaning towards Nebraska.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: I think when you talk about Nick March and Charlie Becker as receivers for Indiana, those are mismatches against anybody.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: I definitely think they will be mismatches against Nebraska secondary.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: But I do think in this game, this is where we are going to see Indiana pull away in the second half.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna stay away from the full game lines here.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take Indiana minus two in the second half.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: Then the reasoning there is I think that again, this game could be very close, maybe a four-point game in the first half.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: The first half spread is Indiana minus four and a half, which feels a little too greedy for my blood.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: And I just think that it maybe Nebraska could come in and maybe take the lead going into half or be tied.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: And I think the second half is where we will see Indiana exert the fact that they are a better, deeper, and better coached football program than Nebraska, and they will pull away in the second half.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: Give me Indiana second half minus two.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: Let's move over to the Big 12 and Houston taking a trip to Manhattan, Kansas, where Kansas State is a two and a half point home favorite, and the over-under is set at 55 and a half.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: So in this game, we have two very, very dynamic quarterbacks, uh, six-year quarterback Connor Wegman for the Houston Cougars, one of my favorite players to watch in all of college football.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: And then on the other side, another very dynamic athlete and quarterback Avery Johnson.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: Colin Klein has really turned around this Kansas State offense.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: I like what they are doing uh in terms of running the football as well, but keeping that dynamic offense going for both sides, whether it's Makai Hughes um or Connor Wegman, or on the flip side, with Avery Johnson using his own legs creatively, I'm going to take the over in this game.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: I don't know that I trust Houston secondary.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: They gave up some pretty explosive plays to Texas Tech in that game late that really kind of cost them that upset.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: And Kansas State hasn't really been tested by much of anybody so far.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take the over 55 and a half here.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: I like both of these quarterbacks.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: I like both of these offensive minds that run their offenses, whether it is uh Willie Fritz or Colin Klein on Kansas State side.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to lean to the over 55 and a half in Manhattan, Kansas.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: Now moving over to one of our one of I mean one of my most exciting teams that I keep paying attention to and I cannot stop paying attention to, and that is the North Dakota State Bison.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: They are a wagon.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: They are simply a wagon.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: They currently are 5-0.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: They are first place in the Mountain West.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: They're averaging 34 points per game, and they are great on defense.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: They so far this season have only allowed, let's see, uh 16 points per game altogether.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: So they're outscoring their opponents on by an average margin of 17 points per game.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: Obviously, this is North Dakota State's first year making the jump from being a perennial contender, perennial champion in the FCS ranks, which is the division below FBS football.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: And they have made waves already in the FBS.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: They are 5-0, like I said.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: Now they travel out to Las Vegas to take on UNLV in a major matchup between the group of six teams here.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: The thing here that I think is important is Dan Mullen is a very creative coach.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: North Dakota State obviously has a pedigree, a system, a culture, and an expectation of winning football games, especially big ones like this.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: North Dakota State is in the position where they can possibly make it to the college football playoff if they continue their undefeated run in Boise State, slips up somewhere.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: So North Dakota State has a lot on the line, but I like Dan Mullen and Jackson Arnold in this position.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: Um the North Dakota State is a slight road favorite, minus three on the road in Vegas in Allegiance Stadium.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 47 and a half.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: I am going to take the running Rebels plus three with Jackson Arnold.
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: He had over 100 rushing yards last week in week five.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: I think Unl V is going to cook up some magic at home on that turf.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: Give me the running rebs plus three at home over North Dakota State.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: Our last game is number 10 LSU.
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: Fresh off their big win against Lowly FCS McNeese State.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: They traveled out to Lexington, Kentucky, where Kentucky got that big win.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, as I mentioned, in overtime over South Carolina.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: And LSU comes into this game favored by eight and a half.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 52 and a half.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: When I think about this game, I don't trust Kentucky's offense.
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: I don't know that I really trust their quarterback to begin with, Kenny Minchie, but I do like Kentucky's defense.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: I also don't know that I necessarily trust everything that Sam Levitt is doing.
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: He's throwing a lot of interceptions.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: He did not throw one last week against Low Lee McNey State of the FCS, but he does have several interceptions to his name so far this season.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take an interesting approach to this game.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: I know Kentucky is fresh off a very emotionally high win.
- 46:16SPEAKER_00: I think they're going to ride some of that high into a night home game against a very, very exciting opponent in LSU.
- 46:25SPEAKER_00: I think that crowd will be rocking.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to take Kentucky in the first quarter plus three and a half.
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: I think they come out strong.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: I think they possibly score, possibly get a turnover in a short field in the first quarter.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: And I like them plus three and a half in the first quarter at home.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: So to recap, we have Alabama on the money line, UCLA plus 11.5, Texas and Oklahoma under 39.5.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: Missouri minus three and a half.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: Indiana second half minus two.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: Houston and Kansas State over 55 and a half.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: UNLV plus three.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: And lastly, Kentucky first quarter plus three and a half.
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: Now to wrap up with our gold star of the weekend, that is going to go to Cowboys wide receiver, CD Lamb.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: He was my wide receiver one heading into the season, and he went absolutely nuclear on Sunday against the Houston Texans.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, and he caught the game-winning touchdown with 40 seconds left to propel the Cowboys to their second win of the season.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: And they got that victory 34-30 and sent the Texans to 0-4, where they are spiraling.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: What to watch for this week?
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: Game two of the WNBA semifinals between the Valkyries and the Aces, as well as the Liberty in the Dream.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: That will take place on Wednesday, October the 7th at night.
- 48:12SPEAKER_00: Both of those games will be back to back.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: Make sure you tune in for the WNBA and make sure you subscribe and follow along the Tailgate Cam podcast.
- 48:22SPEAKER_00: Wherever you get your podcast, please rate, review, comment, like, and subscribe.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: Thank you for checking in to another Tailgate with your boy Cameron Clark.
