Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We certainly know that a federal election is looming. We've
- 0:03Speaker 1: seen a few federal polleyes in and out of the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Northern Territory, some shadow ministers here as well. But joining
- 0:09Speaker 1: us in this studio right now is well someone who's
- 0:12Speaker 1: in the territory all the time. That is the Member
- 0:14Speaker 1: for Solomon, Luke Gosling.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Good morning. Great to see you again, Katie.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Having new year.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I haven't seen you yet for the new year, but
- 0:21Speaker 1: good to have you back in the studio now.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Luke.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We know that we still don't have an actual date
- 0:27Speaker 1: for the federal election yet.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Can I ask you before we get started.
- 0:30Speaker 4: What's your guests first half of May. Yeah, that's what
- 0:34Speaker 4: it's looking like. Because the Prime Minister has said that
- 0:36Speaker 4: there'll be a budget in March, and I had the
- 0:39Speaker 4: opportunity to speak to the Federal Treasurer, Josh Froenberg, who
- 0:43Speaker 4: was in Darwin last night. I spoke with him about
- 0:46Speaker 4: territory he needs and looking after the territory in this budget,
- 0:50Speaker 4: because obviously, as incoming labor federal government, whatever's in that budget,
- 0:55Speaker 4: we'll be looking at that carefully and we want to
- 0:57Speaker 4: we'll obviously be meeting stuff that's good for the territory.
- 1:01Speaker 1: So I know that today it's going to be announced
- 1:04Speaker 1: by the Labor Party that if elected Federal Labor would
- 1:11Speaker 1: invest seven point five million dollars into overhauling the Casuarina
- 1:15Speaker 1: Swimming Center. Now, some people listening this morning might be
- 1:18Speaker 1: a bit confused because I know that the Darwin City
- 1:20Speaker 1: Council said that they were going to revamp the Casuarina
- 1:23Speaker 1: Swimming Center.
- 1:24Speaker 3: So how would this money help.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Well, it's been it's fifty years old, the pool, so
- 1:32Speaker 4: it really needs a revamp. And I think the Lord
- 1:35Speaker 4: Mayor convat Scalas has got a really great vision and
- 1:38Speaker 4: the old woman up there particularly people like Jimmy Bohoris,
- 1:41Speaker 4: have got a really great vision for how that pool
- 1:45Speaker 4: can be great social infrastructure, great sports infrastructure, and just
- 1:49Speaker 4: be a real hub. And now we see this morning
- 1:52Speaker 4: with the redevelopment of Kashquare itself, I mean that it's
- 1:56Speaker 4: just going to be amazing up there in Casina. This
- 1:59Speaker 4: is on the back of the Palmerston Pool receiving five
- 2:02Speaker 4: million dollars through a federal grant to upgrade their pool,
- 2:05Speaker 4: which is really important. But the Casarina Pool missed out
- 2:09Speaker 4: on federal funding. So this is me getting Katherine King,
- 2:13Speaker 4: one of our senior people into Darwin today, will stand
- 2:16Speaker 4: up at the pool and we'll just commit that seven
- 2:20Speaker 4: point five million dollars which will mean that that pool
- 2:23Speaker 4: can get underway as soon as possible. Now, the Lord
- 2:26Speaker 4: Mayor asked us for that funding, said it was a
- 2:28Speaker 4: number one priority for the council, So you know I'm
- 2:32Speaker 4: starting to provide now.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I my kids swim, so I've been to some in
- 2:36Speaker 1: carnivals there at Casarina, and I also, would you believe,
- 2:38Speaker 1: went to a some in carnival, several some in carnivals
- 2:41Speaker 1: there when I was a kid, like twenty odd years ago,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and I don't think the pool's changed much in those
- 2:46Speaker 1: twenty years. So I can see that there is a
- 2:49Speaker 1: real need for that pool to be upgraded. I've already
- 2:52Speaker 1: received an email this morning, though, this one from Lee
- 2:54Speaker 1: and it says, Hi, Katie, do you know a time
- 2:57Speaker 1: in history when during a state of emergency, a sitting
- 2:59Speaker 1: goment's gone ahead and built a new pool.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Money better spent elsewhere?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Perhaps I think it's time to talk about about ending
- 3:09Speaker 1: this discussion immediately. Enough's enough, we need to stop the spending.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So look I know that there's different people with obviously
- 3:16Speaker 1: very differing opinions.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah, Leader doesn't have to go the pool, but Territorians
- 3:20Speaker 4: deserve the best possible infrastructure that is available, and this
- 3:26Speaker 4: is a fifty year old pool.
- 3:27Speaker 2: The Parmesan pools getting a revamp.
- 3:29Speaker 4: I don't want the northern suburbs to miss out on
- 3:31Speaker 4: a great opportunity to get their pool up stampards. Also,
- 3:35Speaker 4: there's going to be restaurants, cafes there, lagoon pool, There's
- 3:38Speaker 4: going to be stuff for kids, and that's what we
- 3:40Speaker 4: need is more stuff for our kids to do better.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Our sports infrastructure when it comes to swimming. Perhaps got
- 3:45Speaker 4: a new pool. Parmesan's going to get a new pool.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I don't want the Northern suburbs to miss out. It
- 3:50Speaker 4: is important infrastructure and I'm proud that we're going to contribute.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Now.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Look, we did speak just a short time ago to
- 3:57Speaker 1: the Police Association President Paul McHugh, and we spoke about
- 4:00Speaker 1: some of the funding concerns around remote police stations. So
- 4:04Speaker 1: essentially there's been an agreement as I understand it, in
- 4:06Speaker 1: place for a number of years for those remote police stations.
- 4:10Speaker 1: It also funds fifty five police officers as I understand it, remotely,
- 4:15Speaker 1: if a Labor federal government was elected, what would be
- 4:19Speaker 1: the stance when it comes to this funding for the
- 4:22Speaker 1: remote stations.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it was really disappointing.
- 4:25Speaker 4: The Chief Miness met with the Federal Treasurer yesterday, so
- 4:29Speaker 4: I'm sure that they covered off on that, and it's
- 4:31Speaker 4: obviously an MT issue. But obviously I'm happy to say
- 4:34Speaker 4: that the federal government should continue its support for those
- 4:38Speaker 4: remote police officers. But what has been announced from the
- 4:42Speaker 4: federal government in terms of continuity of funding only covers
- 4:45Speaker 4: seventy officers, not the full about two hundred and thirty
- 4:49Speaker 4: plus offices that we need out in the community. So
- 4:53Speaker 4: that's obviously disappointing, and we'd like to see in the
- 4:57Speaker 4: upcoming federal budget more funding.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Our LO catered for that purpose.
- 5:01Speaker 1: And what about though, for you guys from your perspective,
- 5:04Speaker 1: I know that, as you said right at the start
- 5:06Speaker 1: of the interview, that the federal government obviously will be
- 5:08Speaker 1: releasing their own budget, and then even if Labor was elected,
- 5:12Speaker 1: you'd have to realistically adhere to some of those you know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: some of those commitments that were made. But does Labor
- 5:18Speaker 1: think that that those remote community police stations need to
- 5:22Speaker 1: be funded and would you make sure that that happened.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Yeah, one hundred percent support the Police Association. I keep
- 5:28Speaker 4: in contact with Paul m Cue about the needs and
- 5:31Speaker 4: where the federal government can do more. I'm returning for
- 5:34Speaker 4: the first week of a federal parliament on the weekends.
- 5:37Speaker 4: We've got two weeks down there, and I'll be talking
- 5:39Speaker 4: to my colleagues. But obviously Warren Snowden and Marian Scrimjaw,
- 5:44Speaker 4: who's our excellent candidate for Lingyari, will have more to
- 5:48Speaker 4: say on this as that announcement's just been made. But
- 5:52Speaker 4: where really we appreciate and respect the work that our
- 5:56Speaker 4: police do out in the communities and they need to
- 5:59Speaker 4: be properly finance supported and the Northern Territory government needs
- 6:03Speaker 4: more support from the federal government to do that.
- 6:04Speaker 2: So that's what I'll be pushing for.
- 6:06Speaker 3: So Parliament sitting already next week.
- 6:08Speaker 4: I'll fly down on Sunday for two weeks of federal Parliament,
- 6:12Speaker 4: then we go back for the budget and then we're
- 6:15Speaker 4: basically into the election campaign. Just the last couple of
- 6:18Speaker 4: days I've had the Shadow Minister for Northern Australia, Murray,
- 6:21Speaker 4: what up here talking to stakeholders about what we need
- 6:24Speaker 4: to see in this budget and what they need and
- 6:26Speaker 4: want to see from federal labor in government. And today
- 6:31Speaker 4: I've got our Infrastructure Minister Katherine King coming up to
- 6:34Speaker 4: the pool, but she's going to be obviously vital in
- 6:38Speaker 4: that road's funding space as well.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to be catching up with her tomorrow morning.
- 6:42Speaker 1: We were do to catch up with Josh Fridenberg this
- 6:45Speaker 1: morning as well. Unfortunately that's not happened. I know that
- 6:47Speaker 1: he's been pressed for time. But we are going to
- 6:49Speaker 1: be catching up with Katherine King tomorrow and I'm very
- 6:51Speaker 1: keen to speak to her a little bit more about
- 6:53Speaker 1: that road's funding, particularly following on from the situation that
- 6:57Speaker 1: we're seeing at the moment with that shortage of stock
- 7:00Speaker 1: on our shelves and some people calling for you know,
- 7:04Speaker 1: the Stuart Highway to be flood proof so that we
- 7:06Speaker 1: don't wind up in this situation again.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Yeah, they're the sorts of questions that Josh Fredenberg, as
- 7:11Speaker 4: a federal Treasurer whilst he's in the territory, should be answering.
- 7:14Speaker 4: And also why you know Scott Morrison, the PM, come
- 7:18Speaker 4: up before the last election and promised two hundred and
- 7:20Speaker 4: twenty million for Kakadu. He's gone out to Jabbaru today,
- 7:23Speaker 4: but there's been nothing happen. So you know that's not
- 7:26Speaker 4: good enough. We don't want to we don't want to
- 7:28Speaker 4: see a continuation of this situation where the Federal government.
- 7:32Speaker 2: They all spin and no grip. We need grip on
- 7:36Speaker 2: the roads.
- 7:36Speaker 4: We need the roads open, and these shortages, the non
- 7:41Speaker 4: availability of rapid energen tests for example, I mean, it's
- 7:45Speaker 4: just simply not good enough forging. I'm really excited about
- 7:48Speaker 4: Federal Labour's interest and dedication to the Northern territory.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And there'll be more shadow ministers coming up for you
- 7:55Speaker 2: to talk to, Katie.
- 7:57Speaker 3: When can we expect Albo in town?
- 7:59Speaker 2: Oh not too far away?
- 8:00Speaker 1: Oh well, no doubt we'll have him in the studio.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Well, of course, it's the Aliath anniversary of the bombing
- 8:04Speaker 4: of the Darwin in just a few short weeks, a
- 8:06Speaker 4: couple of weeks of parliament and then we'll have the
- 8:09Speaker 4: leader here for the bombing of Darwin and he'll be
- 8:12Speaker 4: talking to you KT.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Well, good stuff, Luke.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Can you just tell us because our listeners obviously can't
- 8:17Speaker 1: see you, but you're limping around.
- 8:19Speaker 3: What's going on, mate?
- 8:21Speaker 4: Oh, had a bit of an office injury, right into
- 8:26Speaker 4: a disc or something. Well, of course I made that
- 8:28Speaker 4: New Year's commitment that I'm going to get fit, Katie,
- 8:31Speaker 4: so I started, Yeah, a couple of exercises and they
- 8:35Speaker 4: I've been getting around, but I'm limping at the moment,
- 8:38Speaker 4: but being to the dock and I'll be fit as
- 8:41Speaker 4: a fiddle in no time.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Good on you, Luke. Thanks so much for your time
- 8:44Speaker 3: this morning. We'll talk to you again soon.
