- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 127, and
- 0:19this is a particularly interesting Psalm, and I'm
- 0:22looking forward to diving into it with you today.
- 0:25This is another one of the Song of a Sense or one of the songs
- 0:29that people would sing as they were going to one of the three
- 0:32annual feasts for the children of Israel as they made their way
- 0:36to Jerusalem. And this particular Song of a
- 0:40Sense has the inscription that it is a Psalm of Solomon.
- 0:45And Solomon, as you know, was according to Scripture, the the
- 0:50wisest man that ever lived, obviously outside of the Lord
- 0:54himself. And as Solomon was given this
- 0:58great wisdom from God as a result of God offering him
- 1:03anything that Solomon could want, he said you could have
- 1:07great riches, you could have lots of possessions, What do you
- 1:12want? And Solomon said, God, I need a
- 1:15discerning heart. I need a wise heart so that I
- 1:19can tell what is good and what is bad, what is right and what
- 1:23is wrong as I am ruling over the children of Israel.
- 1:26And God said, that's a great answer to quote, you know,
- 1:31what's the gentleman's name? Steve Harvey from Family Feud.
- 1:35That's a good answer. And so God said, because you
- 1:39didn't ask for possessions, you didn't ask for riches, you
- 1:43didn't ask for victory over your enemies, I'm going to give you
- 1:47everything else as well, in addition to wisdom.
- 1:52And so I think even as we look at Psalm 127, we should
- 1:56recognize that this is wisdom that comes from God-given to us,
- 2:01certainly in poetic fashion, but this is something that we should
- 2:04value with our lives and that we should say, God, what you have
- 2:09for me in these 5 verses, this is something that I actually
- 2:14need for my life. And so I'm going to believe what
- 2:17you say, not just what my perhaps experience tells me, or
- 2:22not just what I fear might happen and said, I'm going to
- 2:26trust in you and in your word and your wisdom.
- 2:29Let's read together, beginning in verse #1 Unless Yahweh builds
- 2:33a house, it's builders labor over it in vain.
- 2:36Unless Yahweh watches over a city, the watchman stays alert
- 2:40in vain. In vain you get up early and
- 2:43stay up late, working hard to have enough food.
- 2:46Yes, he gives sleep to the one he loves.
- 2:50Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord.
- 2:52Offspring a reward like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the
- 2:57sons born in one's youth. Happy is the man who has filled
- 3:01his quiver with them. They will never be put to shame
- 3:04when they speak with their enemies at the city gate.
- 3:09So here this Psalm gives four, yeah, 4 main examples of the
- 3:19fact that we are totally reliant on God for any sort of blessed
- 3:26or good life, that only through the Lord do we experience good
- 3:31things. Even the inscription like the
- 3:34title of this Psalm that it has in the Christian standard Bible
- 3:38is the blessing of the Lord and that is certainly what we are
- 3:43after. So I want to walk through this
- 3:46verses one and two kind of have one picture.
- 3:49It's it's three items that it says here are the areas in which
- 3:54you have to have God's blessing in order for any of the work
- 3:58that you've put into matter. And then verses 3 through 5 talk
- 4:03specifically about children and how that relates to that same
- 4:06topic as well. So let's begin.
- 4:09Verse #1 unless Yahweh builds a house, it's builders labor over
- 4:13it in vain here. If God is not on your side of
- 4:18God is not for what you are doing, then all of your work
- 4:23that you are putting in it is pointless.
- 4:25It is empty here. This word vain is the word sayi.
- 4:32This is a noun. And then let me pull up a couple
- 4:35of things to be able to look at this word.
- 4:40This is words that can mean wickedness, calamity,
- 4:48destruction, things that people suffer, falsehood or a lie.
- 4:57Yeah. So this is something like what
- 5:01is occasionally said to take the name of God in vain.
- 5:06It is for a worthless purpose. It is to misuse something.
- 5:12I'm actually really happy I look that up.
- 5:15That helps bring some clarity to this.
- 5:16So think of the phrase taking the name of the Lord your God in
- 5:20vain. Or as the CSB has it, do not
- 5:24misuse the name of the Lord your God.
- 5:28When you are fighting against God, then even the work that you
- 5:33are doing, it is misusing the resources that God has given
- 5:38you. So here, even in building a
- 5:41house, I'm thankful. My friend Zach Burnham is a
- 5:45realtor in the area. Also Dina Wassmer, both of whom
- 5:48I know at at various times listen to the podcast.
- 5:51So guys, whenever you listen to this episode, let me know you
- 5:54heard it. Thankful for both of you.
- 5:56Thankful for the work that you do even in finding homes for
- 6:00people in the area. And my buddy Zach helps out with
- 6:04Habitat for Humanity sometimes when he has some some time to be
- 6:08able to work on that. And so I know that they have put
- 6:11together homes for people. And I'm thankful that as they
- 6:16help people find homes and purchase homes, and as they
- 6:19build homes for people, that they are doing it with a heart
- 6:23to bless others, that they are working for the betterment of
- 6:28the people of their clients or of people as they're working
- 6:33with, you know, various nonprofits and, and like Habitat
- 6:37for Humanity to be able to help others out.
- 6:40I think that is something that is good, that is using the
- 6:44resources that God has given them in a good way.
- 6:48So as Yahweh builds a house as he is for what is happening,
- 6:53then we are not laboring worthlessly.
- 6:56We are not misusing our effort or energy or our funds.
- 7:02Can I tell you not everything that you or I do, not everything
- 7:07that we put our money into, not everything that we work at is
- 7:13the thing that God wants us to be using it for.
- 7:17And I just think that this is such a tremendous challenge to
- 7:23my heart as I go, God, am I, am I doing what you want with my
- 7:31life? Am I doing what you want with my
- 7:34money? Or am I misusing it?
- 7:37And so as I'm, you know, trying to, I'll, I'll put it this way.
- 7:40So I'm trying to build Tabernacle Baptist Church.
- 7:44Am I doing it in a worthless, in a vein, in a misusing kind of
- 7:49way, or am I doing it the way that you want me to?
- 7:53Am I saying here's Brian's best ideas and things?
- 7:56Or am I saying this is what the word of God says and am I
- 7:59following that? Because the truth is, unless God
- 8:03builds my church, then it doesn't matter.
- 8:06The effort that I put in. Everything that I'm doing is, is
- 8:09worthless. I'm misusing all of my time and
- 8:13effort and energy. I think about my own home with
- 8:17my family. Unless God is the one that is
- 8:21building up my family and me and Samantha and our marriage, and
- 8:26unless God is the one that is building up B and EV, then I am
- 8:32misusing my time and energy and resources.
- 8:37And so I don't want to waste my time.
- 8:40I don't want to waste my resources.
- 8:42I want to make it good. And so my goal has to be, am I
- 8:47pursuing God's way? Am I doing this thing in the way
- 8:50that God wants? Solomon knows exactly how this
- 8:54went because he grew the wealth of Israel, but he didn't do it
- 9:01in God's way. This was later in his reign, but
- 9:06he did not grow Israel in God's way.
- 9:09And he kind of misused people and ran roughshod over them.
- 9:14So that when it came to the life and reign of his son Rehoboam,
- 9:19the people came to Rehoboam and they said, man, your, your dad
- 9:22really like worked us over. And so we're coming to you and
- 9:27we are asking like, would you take it a little bit easier on
- 9:29us? Because if you do that, like we
- 9:32will serve you all the days of our lives.
- 9:34And Ray Boehm went, no, if you thought my dad was hard nosed,
- 9:38you've seen nothing yet. And he ignored the counsel of
- 9:43the old men in his life that said, hey, you should listen to
- 9:47the people. Because if you give them some
- 9:51space, if you allow them to be able to like live their lives
- 9:55more than your dad did, then they will serve you all of their
- 9:58lives. So Solomon experienced not doing
- 10:03this, that he grew Israel, but he didn't grow Israel God's way.
- 10:07And so all of his building was in vain and it literally split
- 10:11the Kingdom into the northern Kingdom of Israel and then the
- 10:14southern Kingdom of Judah as a result of the fact that he
- 10:17didn't build the house the Lord's way, he built it his own
- 10:20way. And then everything crumbled.
- 10:23And I don't want what I build in my life to crumble.
- 10:26I don't want to in 20 years from now, look at my, you know,
- 10:30relationship with my family and go, Oh yeah, my, my marriage
- 10:35totally tore apart because I didn't build it on Jesus.
- 10:37And my kids don't really want to talk to me anymore because I
- 10:41didn't treat them like Jesus would have treated them.
- 10:45But, you know, I, I really did this or, you know, I, I know of
- 10:49people that they never took time for their family, whether they,
- 10:55they worked too much or, you know, some people even spent too
- 11:00much time at the physical church building and didn't spend time
- 11:04with their family. I, you know, I want to be
- 11:08faithful to work as much as I'm supposed to be working.
- 11:12But then I also want to realize that if I don't care for my
- 11:16family first and foremost, then I can do amazing, quote UN quote
- 11:22or great things at Tabernacle. But if I lose my family, man,
- 11:27like what worth is that? I don't want BNF to grow up to
- 11:31go. Yeah, Dad really loved
- 11:34Tabernacle, but he didn't love us very much.
- 11:36And can I encourage you? I don't know who all's watching
- 11:39at the moment. Maybe you're someone that you're
- 11:42not a pastor, but you really, really love the church.
- 11:47You love serving the church, and that is a good thing.
- 11:49That's a holy thing. But if God has given you a
- 11:53family, whether that's a spouse, whether it's kids for some of
- 11:58you grandkids or maybe some of you, you don't have kids that
- 12:03are still in the home, but you have kids that are in the area
- 12:06or you have maybe a brother or sister, don't allow the quote UN
- 12:12quote, church. Like don't allow the building or
- 12:14the programs or something to take precedent over the love and
- 12:19responsibility that God has called you to have to your
- 12:23family. Your family is your first
- 12:25ministry. That what what good is it if you
- 12:31you know, I'll just throw out a couple things that that I know
- 12:35regularly happen at Tabernacle like things get fixed.
- 12:38And I'm thankful for guys like Gary and John and the other John
- 12:43and Charlie and many others, Zach and Mike and and others
- 12:48that I know of that have helped to maintain our facilities.
- 12:52Like what good is it if facilities get fixed but you
- 12:55lose your family, that your family goes well, They don't
- 12:58really care about me. Like they care about fixing
- 13:01stuff or they care about making food or they care about doing
- 13:06Tabernacle talk. But they are never home.
- 13:09Like they are never with us. They don't care about us and you
- 13:14know, we're just kind of a byproduct.
- 13:16I don't want that to be your life value as God's primary
- 13:23ministry in your life that he has placed you.
- 13:26There is your family. And so care for your wife, care
- 13:30for your kids. Now, I would argue part of
- 13:32caring for your wife and kids is regularly bring them with you.
- 13:38At the very least, make sure that you guys are in church
- 13:42together. That is a great, worthy,
- 13:45wonderful thing to be able to do.
- 13:47That's what Christ declares for us, that we not abandoned the
- 13:51assembling of ourselves together, but instead that we,
- 13:55we do join together and we encourage one another.
- 13:57We pray for one another, we worship together, we hear from
- 14:00the Word, we give to the Lord's work.
- 14:03We build each other up. And that's a great thing to do.
- 14:06And then as you have time or ability, being able to serve is
- 14:11a wonderful thing. Being able to serve together
- 14:13with your family is awesome. I genuinely think one of the
- 14:17reasons that I'm a pastor today is because my parents served in
- 14:21ministry, but they didn't serve alone and they were just lay
- 14:25leaders like helping out in nursery, helping out singing
- 14:29songs, helping out in kids class.
- 14:33But they didn't serve alone. They served with us that they
- 14:37brought us along. And so we all together as a
- 14:40family served at the church. And so it wasn't just something
- 14:43that like, oh, dad does this. It was we do this and we love
- 14:47the Lord. And so we want to help out in
- 14:50these ways and that can be such a valuable thing.
- 14:52So serve the Lord, do go to church together when you can
- 14:58serve together, have there be a joy in serving, but never
- 15:02sacrifice your family on the altar of quote UN quote ministry
- 15:08to other people. Your family's your primary
- 15:10ministry. And if I had to choose between,
- 15:13OK, you can be the pastor of Tabernacle or you can have
- 15:16Samantha in B and FI will choose Samantha in B&F every time
- 15:21because Tabernacle is Christ's bride and he will take care of
- 15:25her. But I have to take care of my
- 15:29family that God has given to me. And I believe Jesus will take
- 15:33care of his church and he has called me to take care of my
- 15:37family. So that was I apologize.
- 15:40All of this is technically still connected with everything that's
- 15:43happening, but that that was just one thing that kind of the
- 15:46Lord laid on my heart there from the beginning of verse one.
- 15:51That was the vast majority of everything that had to be said.
- 15:54So if you're like Brian, we're 15 minutes and we're in trouble.
- 15:57Don't worry, I will. I will be very brief on the
- 16:01remainder portion of this. The thoughts continued there in
- 16:03verse one. Unless you always watches over a
- 16:05city, the watchman stays alert in vain.
- 16:09Unless God is for your city and what you are doing.
- 16:12If God's designated that a city is going to fall to an invading
- 16:17army, then there's nothing that you can really do about that.
- 16:20So the point has to be that we want to be on the side of God.
- 16:25We want to do things His way. Otherwise all of our effort is
- 16:28pointless. Verse #2 in vain.
- 16:30You get up early and stay up late working hard to have enough
- 16:33food. Yes, He gives sleep to the one
- 16:37he loves. That part of what it means to
- 16:41trust God, part of what it means to be know that you are on the
- 16:46Lords side is that you genuinely believe God will work and he
- 16:51will make supernaturally your results be far more than what
- 16:57you think it might be. So you could say, all right,
- 17:00well if I put in 90 hours of work this week, then I'm certain
- 17:05that I'm going to get so much more stuff done.
- 17:08And here the psalmist encourages us, No, God can work.
- 17:11And it doesn't matter how much effort you put in if God's, if
- 17:15you're, if you're not doing it God's way, if you're misusing
- 17:19God's resources, then it doesn't matter the effort that you put
- 17:22in. Like it'll come to nothing.
- 17:24And even if you don't feel like that, you were putting in all of
- 17:28the work that you possibly could, getting up super early,
- 17:30staying up super late, God can extend your work far past what
- 17:36you put in. And you can see that in many
- 17:38Bible stories of the only one I'll mention right now is the
- 17:41five loaves and two fishes. That one small little thing, God
- 17:45exploded out. Now we ought to be diligent, but
- 17:49you don't have to kill yourself in your work in order for God to
- 17:54bless. God can supernaturally bless you
- 17:56in ways that you can never imagine.
- 17:59Just make sure I am on the side of God, that I'm doing what He
- 18:02has called me to do. And so I'm going to trust that
- 18:05He will fill in the gaps for this.
- 18:08And a reliance on the Lord, a confidence in His sovereignty
- 18:12and in His blessing, means that you can sleep at night.
- 18:16And that's an encouragement that I've needed many times in my
- 18:19life. Then this Psalm ends with verses
- 18:233 through 5 about the blessing of children, says sons are
- 18:27indeed a heritage from Yahweh offspring, a reward here sons
- 18:31would be those that they carry on the family lineage.
- 18:34People would think well of you culturally when you have this.
- 18:38And he says that children here sons, I don't I, I would tend
- 18:45more towards the word children here that there is a cultural
- 18:49element of yes, sons would be a heritage from the Lord.
- 18:52But I do genuinely believe daughters as well.
- 18:55They are a blessing that come from God himself.
- 18:58Kids are not just the result of human initiative or human
- 19:03planning. Kids are from the Lord.
- 19:05If you have a kid, if you find out that you are pregnant, that
- 19:09is from God, contrary to our culture, I encourage you retain
- 19:15any pregnancy that you have. Don't say, well, I might have
- 19:19more money or more freedom if I don't have a kid or man, this is
- 19:24happening out of wedlock. And so I think I need to
- 19:28terminate this pregnancy. No, absolutely not.
- 19:31Children come from God. And so when God gives you
- 19:34children, keep them, love them because they come from the Lord.
- 19:39And yeah, that that's what I'll say there for verse #3 that this
- 19:45is love from the Lord. Now if God doesn't give you
- 19:47kids, it is not that God does not love you.
- 19:50Jesus did not have any kids. So therefore, if you do not have
- 19:54kids, you are, you have done just as much as Jesus has done.
- 20:00And so don't feel any shame. I know many times well meaning
- 20:05people, well thinking people. Can can make offhanded remarks
- 20:10or things that would degrade someone that perhaps only has
- 20:14one kid or doesn't have any kids at all.
- 20:16And I want to encourage you, Jesus didn't have kids.
- 20:18And so don't don't force that on to people to say, well, if
- 20:23you're really like walking with God or making wise decisions,
- 20:26then you will have kids. Jesus is our standard of
- 20:30righteousness. It's not any other person.
- 20:33Frankly, it's not even like Genesis 127 of the be fruitful
- 20:38and multiply. That's great.
- 20:40That goes for most of creation. It didn't apply to Paul.
- 20:45It didn't apply to Jesus. And so it doesn't have to apply
- 20:48to every person. Verse #4 here continuing like
- 20:52arrows in the hand of a warrior are the sons born in one's
- 20:56youth. Happy is the man who has filled
- 20:58his quiver with them. They will never be put to shame
- 21:00when they speak with their enemies at the gates.
- 21:03So here during this time you have a lot of agricultural
- 21:07farming culture. And so if you have a lot of
- 21:09kids, that's a lot more hands to help at the farm.
- 21:12That is what is happening here. This is not per some people even
- 21:18in the 20th century said some knuckleheaded things about
- 21:23needing to have as many kids as possible and you can look at
- 21:27various reality shows and and see what happens with families
- 21:31like that that they're often tends to be especially nowadays
- 21:35a lack of care. Many sorrows that kind of come
- 21:40along. If you feel like I have a
- 21:43scriptural need to have as many possible children because of
- 21:47this Psalm and much, much more could be said, we are totally
- 21:53out of time on that. Suffice it to to say, here is
- 21:57the point. Here is the application for you.
- 21:59If you have kids, be grateful for your kids.
- 22:02Don't view them as just an annoyance.
- 22:04Don't view them as something that I I kind of resent that I
- 22:09had these kids. No, no, be thankful for them
- 22:11that God Himself gave them to you.
- 22:14Have a purpose a a joy and aim that you have for your children.
- 22:20As Paul would tell us in Ephesians 6, raise your children
- 22:23up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord that you care for
- 22:27them. You teach them what God has
- 22:29said. It will be up to them whether or
- 22:31not they follow through on that, but at least have the aim in
- 22:34your life that you want to raise them to know and love Jesus.
- 22:39Don't raise and know them, or don't raise them to just be a
- 22:44doctor, or to be the greatest, you know, basketball player, or
- 22:49to have the highest possible grades.
- 22:52If they are any of those things, wonderful.
- 22:55But what they need is a relationship with God.
- 22:58Because unless the Lord builds the house, unless God is the one
- 23:02building your family and your kids, all of your labor is in
- 23:06vain. It's worthless.
- 23:08You are misusing the resources, so use the resources for what
- 23:12God has intended. Walk his way.
- 23:15Be confident in the blessing that God brings, that if God is
- 23:18for you, nothing can be against you and it doesn't matter
- 23:24frankly what others think. It doesn't matter what others
- 23:27opinions are. You want to walk God's way
- 23:30because God's way is the best way.
- 23:32Thanks for tuning in. I know and long today, but I
- 23:34really appreciate the time getting to be with you and
- 23:37looking forward to next episode in Psalm 128.
