Latest / Birdland Territory / O's offense really struggles in series finale loss to Angels.

- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, Birdland, welcome in one series. Post trade deadline is
- 0:12Speaker 1: in the books. One cold later for years. Truly been
- 0:16Speaker 1: an interesting few days in my household. But since you're
- 0:19Speaker 1: just watching, you can't get this terrible cold. I got
- 0:21Speaker 1: lucky for Tim and Brad and everybody today. It's been
- 0:25Speaker 1: an interesting few days nursing this baby. But the Orioles today, guys,
- 0:29Speaker 1: it was disappointing. Four to one. They lose to the
- 0:31Speaker 1: Angels and the offense just is not showing up. We
- 0:36Speaker 1: posted this stat numerous times, thirteen runs were less. Now
- 0:40Speaker 1: they have scored in ten of the last twelve series,
- 0:44Speaker 1: remarkably because of the pitchers. They have a winning record
- 0:48Speaker 1: in those thirty six games nineteen and seventeen. But what
- 0:52Speaker 1: could it be if they just get a few more
- 0:55Speaker 1: runs which they're not getting. Six runs against the Phillies,
- 0:59Speaker 1: shut out twice, nine runs against the Angels, and guys,
- 1:03Speaker 1: it wouldn't have taken much to get a sweep here,
- 1:05Speaker 1: which they did not get.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just been kind of baffling really when you
- 1:11Speaker 2: look at this offense.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I was supposed to be one of their big strengths.
- 1:13Speaker 2: You know, score some runs and hopefully the pitching comes around,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and now for the last two months, we've been talking
- 1:18Speaker 2: about the pitching non stop and the hitting has just
- 1:20Speaker 2: not been enough to you know, kind of get them
- 1:23Speaker 2: these wins. And like Steve, like you said, yeah, it's
- 1:25Speaker 2: a series win, but very easily could have been a
- 1:28Speaker 2: sweep today with just a couple you know, big hits there.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It's just they're they're not able to come through here recently,
- 1:33Speaker 2: and it's it's.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Kind of hard to wrap your head around it.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And obviously a lot of motions in the clubhouse and
- 1:38Speaker 2: everything these last couple of days. So got to give
- 1:40Speaker 2: the team credit to definitely getting a series win, but
- 1:43Speaker 2: it's gonna be some tough competition here, and they now
- 1:45Speaker 2: find themselves, i think, behind four different teams for that
- 1:48Speaker 2: final wildcout spot, and even though they're only one game behind,
- 1:52Speaker 2: it's tough to really jump over or one and a
- 1:54Speaker 2: half games behind. It's really tough when you start sacking
- 1:57Speaker 2: teams ahead of you to get ahead of them because
- 1:59Speaker 2: now you're looking for four losses to gain any ground
- 2:02Speaker 2: in the standing. So that's kind of where they're behind
- 2:04Speaker 2: the eight ball. But you know, I got to give
- 2:06Speaker 2: them credit that they got the series there wasn't a
- 2:08Speaker 2: ton of offense, but the pitching still has just been tremendous,
- 2:11Speaker 2: and the starting pitching has gone a long way these
- 2:13Speaker 2: last couple of months.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Yeah, if you start with the positive, I think we
- 2:17Speaker 4: were all kind of wondering what would this club be like,
- 2:21Speaker 4: especially the first game after the trade deadline, because just
- 2:25Speaker 4: seeing all the interviews prior to Tuesday's game, you could
- 2:28Speaker 4: tell they were really emotional. Gunner Henderson, especially because he
- 2:32Speaker 4: was in the same draft class as Adlee Ruchman Colden
- 2:35Speaker 4: Cowser saying that Adley's in his wedding like that. There
- 2:38Speaker 4: was a ton of emotion in that clubhouse prior to
- 2:41Speaker 4: Tuesday's games, So you give them credit for winning that game,
- 2:45Speaker 4: winning Wednesday. Trevor Rodgers was spectacular last night, and Kate
- 2:50Speaker 4: Povich stepping stepping up, dig pitching well with traffic Tuesday,
- 2:55Speaker 4: and then today, Look, Brandon Young would tell you he
- 2:57Speaker 4: didn't have his best stuff today. I think that's obvious.
- 3:00Speaker 4: But Zach Netto, that was the one big blow, the
- 3:03Speaker 4: three run homer. But with how the offense is performing
- 3:06Speaker 4: right now, the three runs felt like six runs. It
- 3:09Speaker 4: felt like seven runs. They only had four hits today.
- 3:13Speaker 4: You know, Gunnar Henderson ran into it out at home
- 3:16Speaker 4: plate to end an inning.
- 3:18Speaker 5: There. It's ugly for this offense right now.
- 3:21Speaker 4: You flash the graphic up there, Steve fourteen hits in
- 3:24Speaker 4: this series. They have twenty seven hits in the last
- 3:26Speaker 4: two series, including the Philly series and this one against
- 3:30Speaker 4: the Angels. The offense just isn't giving them nowhere near
- 3:34Speaker 4: enough right now.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Really disappointing because that's an area that we counted on
- 3:39Speaker 1: this season. And as you said, fourteen hits, shut out
- 3:43Speaker 1: twice to end the Philly series. It's a theme for
- 3:46Speaker 1: the Orioles Friday night. Great win. Let's see if they
- 3:50Speaker 1: can get the series against the Phillies. They don't first
- 3:53Speaker 1: two against the Angels, and I don't think they played
- 3:55Speaker 1: great in the first two in that series, but they've
- 3:57Speaker 1: beat a bad team and then they had a chance
- 3:59Speaker 1: to sweep them and then could not pull that off.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So I'm not sure what the answer is here, but
- 4:05Speaker 1: this deep end of the season, it's starting to look
- 4:09Speaker 1: like this is who the offense is more so than
- 4:12Speaker 1: it's an outlier.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what it kind of seems like. It's it's
- 4:16Speaker 2: the same guys. If they produce they win games, and
- 4:19Speaker 2: if they don't, then it's kind of not The offense
- 4:22Speaker 2: just isn't there. So it's it's like you're saying, it's
- 4:25Speaker 2: it's been four months, so it's not like this is
- 4:27Speaker 2: a couple of week stretch or something like that. And it's,
- 4:29Speaker 2: like I said, it's shocking, it's hard to like, kind
- 4:32Speaker 2: of when you see all these stats, it's just really
- 4:34Speaker 2: hard to believe that this is the offense that we
- 4:36Speaker 2: had thought about in spring training and thought it was
- 4:38Speaker 2: going to carry this team all the way through the season.
- 4:41Speaker 2: That they're just not performing to the levels that we expected.
- 4:44Speaker 2: And it's just hard to win games when you don't
- 4:46Speaker 2: score runs.
- 4:46Speaker 3: You can't.
- 4:47Speaker 2: It's the pitching has done everything they can and at
- 4:49Speaker 2: some point it's going to come back to the mean
- 4:51Speaker 2: a little bit. I feel like they've been pitching so
- 4:53Speaker 2: well that it's kept them afloat in the standings right now.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But it's just kind of it's kind of just hard
- 4:58Speaker 2: of fathom, like you said, thirteen fourteen hits this series.
- 5:01Speaker 2: It's just not the offense that we are we're expecting
- 5:04Speaker 2: at all this season, and it's just kind of hard
- 5:06Speaker 2: to believing.
- 5:06Speaker 3: You just wonder where's it gonna come from.
- 5:08Speaker 2: At this point, it's they're gonna be trying some different
- 5:10Speaker 2: guys in the lineup. They're gonna be trying some of
- 5:12Speaker 2: the newer guys. They're gonna be getting more at bets
- 5:14Speaker 2: for guys that I feel like, uh, you know, they're
- 5:16Speaker 2: gonna find try to find out who they have for
- 5:18Speaker 2: twenty twenty seven. So it's guys just have to step up,
- 5:20Speaker 2: and it's there's no other way to put it, and
- 5:22Speaker 2: you need your stars to do with that we expect
- 5:24Speaker 2: them to do. And then you need the guys that
- 5:26Speaker 2: are gonna start getting more regular at bats just show
- 5:28Speaker 2: that they're ready to be pieces for twenty six and
- 5:31Speaker 2: twenty seven then beyond.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I think today was especially disappointing guys considering the starting
- 5:37Speaker 4: pitcher and Ryan Johnson, the Angels starter today.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Has really, really, really, really struggled.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Outside of his two starts against the Orioles, his last
- 5:48Speaker 4: one in Anaheim. You combine both starts, the one in
- 5:51Speaker 4: Anaheim the one today, he's going ten and two thirds innings,
- 5:55Speaker 4: four hits, one run, six walks, nine strikeouts. It's a
- 5:58Speaker 4: point eight four ERA, a point nine four whip, one
- 6:01Speaker 4: twenty five batting average. The rest of his outings against
- 6:04Speaker 4: the rest of the league guys eight seven eight, ERA
- 6:07Speaker 4: one seven eight whip and a three to zero nine
- 6:09Speaker 4: batting average. So he's getting shelved against everyone else. But
- 6:13Speaker 4: this Orioles lineup just couldn't figure it out. And I
- 6:16Speaker 4: think what was so disappointing about today? He had five
- 6:20Speaker 4: walks and a hit by pitch and it didn't score.
- 6:24Speaker 4: You know, Jackson Holliday came up bases loaded situation where
- 6:28Speaker 4: he just walked a couple guys, He swung at the
- 6:30Speaker 4: first pitch, grounded out to the second baseman, and you
- 6:34Speaker 4: look at the game as a whole, eight walks, one
- 6:37Speaker 4: hip by pitch. None of those nine base runners came
- 6:40Speaker 4: around to score.
- 6:41Speaker 5: That just can't happen. It can't happen.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So had the Orioles won today, amazingly enough, they would
- 6:52Speaker 1: be at this hour tied for the AL third wild card.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Going into today, they needed Cleveland to lose to ask.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Then Cleveland lost, Texas did not play, the Ools would
- 7:04Speaker 1: have gained the half game to tie Texas at fifty
- 7:07Speaker 1: seven and fifty eight. They would be in a playoff position.
- 7:11Speaker 1: If they won the game, today. They also would have
- 7:15Speaker 1: been within one game of five hundred for the first
- 7:17Speaker 1: time since the end of April. A lot of good
- 7:19Speaker 1: could have come out of a win today that Storials
- 7:22Speaker 1: didn't get. When we come back, I want to ask
- 7:24Speaker 1: the guys this question. It sounds a little ridiculous to
- 7:28Speaker 1: say it this way, but is this team okay? And
- 7:30Speaker 1: that's what I mean? How much the vibe? How are
- 7:32Speaker 1: they holding up after what happened Monday? Because I don't
- 7:36Speaker 1: think we got definitive answers in the last three days.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I think we're still going to be sorting that out.
- 7:41Speaker 1: But let's check in on that in a moment on
- 7:43Speaker 1: Birdland Territory.

- 8:46Speaker 1: So we ask, is this team oka coming out of Monday?
- 8:49Speaker 1: The trade, the emotion we heard from the clubhouse as
- 8:53Speaker 1: they lose several players they were fond of, including of
- 8:57Speaker 1: course Adlie Richmand, the face of the reill, the first
- 9:00Speaker 1: draft pick of Michaelias, et cetera, et cetera, And guys,
- 9:04Speaker 1: I don't think we know the answer to that yet.
- 9:07Speaker 1: I think the one lost record is going to be
- 9:09Speaker 1: the real Teltale here And will this spur them on
- 9:12Speaker 1: to get a playoff spot? It might? Will it drag
- 9:15Speaker 1: him down over weeks. When Brandon Hyde was fired last
- 9:19Speaker 1: year and I went into that clubhouse, it was down man,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and you watched the Ools play for about a week.
- 9:26Speaker 1: They were not a good team. They were trying to
- 9:29Speaker 1: get their bearings on straight. I don't think this is
- 9:31Speaker 1: the same thing because I think players realize and Brad,
- 9:35Speaker 1: you can talk to this more than Tim and I.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It's a business. Life goes on. We say goodbye to
- 9:40Speaker 1: good friends all the time. You got traded, Zach got traded.
- 9:44Speaker 1: A lot of big names have been traded from the
- 9:46Speaker 1: Orioles Man he got traded, Sodo got traded, Harper got traded.
- 9:50Speaker 1: This is part of baseball, and so long winded a
- 9:55Speaker 1: way of saying, we don't know that answer yet.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I don't think yeah, And I don't think you're gonna
- 10:00Speaker 2: to know the answer honestly until these last fifty games
- 10:02Speaker 2: are played. I just feel like this is with the
- 10:04Speaker 2: group that they have left, it's not going to be
- 10:06Speaker 2: a short answer. It's not gonna be a one week
- 10:08Speaker 2: it's not going to be a two week. I really
- 10:10Speaker 2: think you're gonna have to judge the group that's left
- 10:12Speaker 2: by the fifty games and where they stand at the
- 10:14Speaker 2: end of the season, and that can be tough because
- 10:17Speaker 2: when you're so close in the standings like it is
- 10:19Speaker 2: in the al right now, you want the quick answer
- 10:21Speaker 2: because you want to be in a position to go
- 10:23Speaker 2: make a playoff run. But I just think with the
- 10:25Speaker 2: moves that they made, this is going to be more
- 10:27Speaker 2: of a long, two month winded answer as opposed to
- 10:31Speaker 2: series by series or week by week. Like you said,
- 10:34Speaker 2: when you lose the personalities that they lost, the guys
- 10:37Speaker 2: that are really close in that clubhouse, the leaders of
- 10:39Speaker 2: that clubhouse, it's gonna take a little bit of time
- 10:41Speaker 2: and like, like we've talked about probably almost too much
- 10:45Speaker 2: at this point, but twenty eighteen a little different.
- 10:47Speaker 3: We knew we were going to get traded.
- 10:48Speaker 2: There was guys going all over the place, and we
- 10:50Speaker 2: didn't really have time to think about it too much
- 10:53Speaker 2: because other guys knew they were going to go. So
- 10:55Speaker 2: this group is now together and there's gonna be nobody
- 10:57Speaker 2: else leaving. This is who they have, So I think
- 11:00Speaker 2: it's just going to be more of I don't want
- 11:02Speaker 2: to judge it by one series. I don't want to
- 11:04Speaker 2: judge it by Oh, they play the Rangers and they
- 11:05Speaker 2: get they lose that series. This this isn't gonna work.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I just think it has to. You have to look
- 11:09Speaker 2: at it as a fifty game experiment. I guess I
- 11:13Speaker 2: don't know of another way to kind of look at it.
- 11:15Speaker 2: That's not the way you want to look at it
- 11:16Speaker 2: when you're one game out of the wild Card, but
- 11:18Speaker 2: I just think that's kind of the way you have
- 11:19Speaker 2: to look at the group that's left, because I think
- 11:21Speaker 2: with the guys they have left, it's just really hard
- 11:24Speaker 2: to look at it over a six game span, a
- 11:25Speaker 2: whole game span. You just really got to give it
- 11:27Speaker 2: the full two months of the season and kind of
- 11:29Speaker 2: see where they're at.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Then.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Yeah, it was kind of funny.
- 11:33Speaker 4: We had Adam Jones on the show on Monday, and
- 11:37Speaker 4: obviously he's an assistant to Michael Lias, and full disclosure,
- 11:42Speaker 4: I was not expecting Adam Jones to still come on.
- 11:45Speaker 8: Because this was in the midst of Hadley getting traded,
- 11:48Speaker 8: everyone's getting traded. I was just thinking and would have
- 11:50Speaker 8: totally have understood if he would have said, Hey, I
- 11:53Speaker 8: don't think this is a good time to come on.
- 11:55Speaker 8: But to his credit, he came on, and I was
- 11:58Speaker 8: saying to Canada, one of my co host We got
- 12:01Speaker 8: to ask him about that.
- 12:03Speaker 5: We can't not ask him about Adley having him come on.
- 12:06Speaker 4: And he created a great answer, man, like he really did.
- 12:10Speaker 4: And and he brought up twenty eighteen Brad and and
- 12:14Speaker 4: he was saying, I think he was saying they were
- 12:16Speaker 4: about to play a series at the Bronx, and he
- 12:18Speaker 4: was bringing up the Will Smith.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Of him at Fresh Prince looking around him. He was
- 12:25Speaker 5: bringing that up where all my guys at.
- 12:28Speaker 4: But yeah, you know, Adam, Adam was saying, like, look,
- 12:30Speaker 4: this is a great opportunity for a lot of guys
- 12:34Speaker 4: right now. You know Poso and Nervaez, and you look
- 12:39Speaker 4: in the outfield with Franklin and Dylan Beavers and Colden Cowser.
- 12:45Speaker 5: It's not ideal.
- 12:46Speaker 4: And there is the human element of it that I'm
- 12:50Speaker 4: sure absolutely shocked guys. I mean, they told the story
- 12:54Speaker 4: that they were going to see Spider Man together and
- 12:57Speaker 4: Adley got the call and then they didn't go. And
- 13:01Speaker 4: Tyler Wells, you know, he was with like it sucks.
- 13:06Speaker 4: The aspect of it where a lot of those guys
- 13:10Speaker 4: came up through the minors with Adley Rutchman or especially
- 13:13Speaker 4: during the COVID, the weird you know Booie situation, Steve
- 13:18Speaker 4: with the player development when Gunner was with him, Like Gunner,
- 13:21Speaker 4: he could barely even talk about it on Mondays. So
- 13:24Speaker 4: I think it's guys still processing things right now, and
- 13:28Speaker 4: I'm with Brad, it's going to take a while to
- 13:31Speaker 4: figure it out. And this stretch of sixteen games, it's tough.
- 13:35Speaker 4: It's all teams are chasing. It's Twins, Rangers, the Rays twice,
- 13:40Speaker 4: the Yankees. This is a tough stretch and it's certainly
- 13:43Speaker 4: a step up in competition over the Angels. But I think,
- 13:47Speaker 4: kind of like what Adam told us on Monday, you
- 13:50Speaker 4: have to use this as a rallying cry. If you're
- 13:53Speaker 4: the guys in that clubhouse, like you have an opportunity
- 13:56Speaker 4: to really carve out a role, make an impression on Michaels.
- 14:00Speaker 4: The rest of the front off is Craig albrin As
- 14:03Speaker 4: not just for this season, but twenty twenty seven and beyond.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Here's what's happened here. Over a course of years, this
- 14:12Speaker 1: young corps came up and hit the ground running pretty well.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Gunner was an MVP candidate. Adley and Gunner were rookie
- 14:22Speaker 1: of the Year candidate's Rookie of the Year Cawser, two
- 14:25Speaker 1: All Star appearances, great stats turned the Orioles into winners,
- 14:30Speaker 1: But then the Young Corps did not take a collective
- 14:33Speaker 1: step forward. In fact, the opposite has happened. Several players
- 14:37Speaker 1: and collectively that Young Core fell back, and so did
- 14:42Speaker 1: the Orioles. So for me, I get the human element here.
- 14:47Speaker 1: But I'm saying, if you're the team, is it a
- 14:50Speaker 1: bad thing to trade from a team that has been
- 14:53Speaker 1: losing for over two calendar years? So maybe a shake up,
- 14:57Speaker 1: a breakup to get you you got to the band
- 14:59Speaker 1: is no longer together. Maybe some of that is not
- 15:03Speaker 1: the worst thing to happen. And we're gonna see how
- 15:06Speaker 1: the players respond. As we've been saying for the last
- 15:08Speaker 1: few minutes, we don't know how this is gonna work out.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think they made Yeah, Steve, I think
- 15:15Speaker 2: you're one hundred percent right. I think it's kind of
- 15:17Speaker 2: the first reality check these guys have had. They've kind
- 15:19Speaker 2: of had this almost like this cushion and bubble like, oh,
- 15:22Speaker 2: we're not going anywhere where the Young Core. You know,
- 15:25Speaker 2: we're gonna win or lose with us. But I think
- 15:27Speaker 2: this is just a reality check of this is the
- 15:29Speaker 2: business of baseball and it sucks at times.
- 15:31Speaker 3: There's no other way to put it.
- 15:32Speaker 2: As a player, you have some of your best friends
- 15:34Speaker 2: on the team, but at the end of the day,
- 15:36Speaker 2: the team is going to make decisions based on what
- 15:38Speaker 2: they think is best for the team moving forward.
- 15:41Speaker 3: And it's it's not fun, it's not easy.
- 15:43Speaker 2: But I think it ruffled some feathers and I think
- 15:45Speaker 2: they realize that if you're trading Adlie, there's really nobody
- 15:48Speaker 2: that's kind of untouchable in this organization. There's nobody untouchable
- 15:51Speaker 2: in this lineup that can't go somewhere or you know,
- 15:55Speaker 2: God forbid something like you get dfaate or something like it.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Just it becomes a harsh reality that you need to
- 16:01Speaker 2: produce at the big league level. There's no hiding from
- 16:03Speaker 2: your stats, there's no hiding from records of the teams
- 16:05Speaker 2: that you're on, and if things aren't going in the
- 16:08Speaker 2: right direction, they can make these Jurassic moves like trading
- 16:11Speaker 2: the head piece of this young Cores, And I think
- 16:14Speaker 2: this has really sent the message to this clubhouse that
- 16:17Speaker 2: all right, it's time to produce or you know, stuff
- 16:19Speaker 2: can happen.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Guys can get.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Traded, you might not be playing for the Oils anymore,
- 16:23Speaker 2: and it's just kind of the reality of the game,
- 16:24Speaker 2: and it's I think it's just all kind of I
- 16:27Speaker 2: think this was a Jurassic move they made to get
- 16:29Speaker 2: rid of all the guys that they did. But I
- 16:31Speaker 2: think it's a big wake up call, and I think
- 16:33Speaker 2: it is a rallying cry for this team that we
- 16:35Speaker 2: need to get together, and it's got to get together
- 16:37Speaker 2: here soon. Otherwise we're not going to get to play
- 16:39Speaker 2: baseball and see each other every single day, and that
- 16:41Speaker 2: can be a hard thing to realize, especially when you're
- 16:43Speaker 2: a young player, like a lot of these guys still are.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Brad, I think you made a really good point when
- 16:49Speaker 4: you were on Must Show a couple hours ago and
- 16:52Speaker 4: someone asked you about Gunner and his struggles, and you
- 16:55Speaker 4: think of all of these guys where Gunner, of course,
- 16:58Speaker 4: was drafted at a high school. Adlee was a one
- 17:01Speaker 4: to one. Jackson Holliday's a one to one. Colden Cowser
- 17:04Speaker 4: was a fifth overall pick. A lot of these guys
- 17:07Speaker 4: have so much pedigree heading into their professional career where
- 17:12Speaker 4: this is their biggest downturn that they've had maybe in
- 17:17Speaker 4: their baseball career at this point, and now it's just
- 17:21Speaker 4: how do you respond?
- 17:23Speaker 5: How do you get the train back on the track?
- 17:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's tough because a lot of times when
- 17:28Speaker 2: you're a high round pick, like you said, especially high
- 17:30Speaker 2: school kids, they never have struggled like it's been, you know,
- 17:34Speaker 2: your first round pick, second round pick.
- 17:36Speaker 3: You're dominating high school.
- 17:37Speaker 2: You get to the minor leagues, that seems like an
- 17:39Speaker 2: easy test to get to the big leagues with some
- 17:41Speaker 2: of these guys especially had success immediately, so there you
- 17:44Speaker 2: think it's just going to be up from there. But
- 17:46Speaker 2: then there's just there's so much in the game that
- 17:49Speaker 2: it can you can underperform, you can run into a
- 17:52Speaker 2: slump and you don't know how to get out of it.
- 17:53Speaker 2: You don't know where to go to when you're struggling,
- 17:57Speaker 2: and it's it's got to be tough to try to
- 17:59Speaker 2: figure it out on the fly like a lot of
- 18:01Speaker 2: these guys are doing, and you start beating yourself up.
- 18:03Speaker 2: And I think that's kind of what I had mentioned
- 18:05Speaker 2: on the show with Gunner.
- 18:06Speaker 3: I think it's it.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Is some physical like I said, I think with his
- 18:10Speaker 2: inside fastball struggles. It's kind of led to some of
- 18:12Speaker 2: the stuff that's going on, but it's almost like you
- 18:14Speaker 2: don't even know where to grasp onto to go and
- 18:17Speaker 2: like use prior experience of struggles or oh I did
- 18:20Speaker 2: this or this gets you back to like almost neutral
- 18:23Speaker 2: when you're a player. So I just think it's a
- 18:25Speaker 2: lot of stuff coming at them at the same time.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Now you throw your best friends being traded away, and
- 18:30Speaker 2: you're just kind of thrown for a whirlwind right now.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I can't even imagine the amount of emotions these guys
- 18:35Speaker 2: are going through, because when you're in the minor leagues
- 18:37Speaker 2: and you establish a group like they had, the tightness
- 18:40Speaker 2: that you have in the minor leagues is like un
- 18:42Speaker 2: any like unlike anything else that you experience you get
- 18:45Speaker 2: to the big leagues. Guys have families, you know, the
- 18:47Speaker 2: age gap is way different. But when you're in the
- 18:49Speaker 2: minor leagues, you are spending every day together. It's your
- 18:51Speaker 2: first time away from home. It's your first time dealing
- 18:53Speaker 2: with anything that's thrown your way in the professional life.
- 18:56Speaker 2: So those guys, I can't even imagine how close they
- 18:58Speaker 2: are and now they're away from each other on everyday basis.
- 19:02Speaker 2: So now you throw struggles in on top of it's
- 19:04Speaker 2: just got to just be a whirlwind of emotions and
- 19:07Speaker 2: just everything thrown at them over this last not even
- 19:10Speaker 2: just week, the last three days here, and they're still
- 19:12Speaker 2: going out there and have him performed at the big
- 19:13Speaker 2: league level.
- 19:14Speaker 4: And one quick note, Steve the other thing on top
- 19:17Speaker 4: of all of this, give a rookie skipper and Craig
- 19:20Speaker 4: Calbert as he ye experience this, so you know, he's
- 19:24Speaker 4: kind of just flying by the seat of his pants
- 19:26Speaker 4: trying to navigate this with this cult out.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Yep, that's where Alonzo comes up big.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I'm sure.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I'm sure he will stuff we don't we'll never see
- 19:36Speaker 1: out of the hot wine and eye of the media.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Just just a little ten second SoundBite on camera the
- 19:41Speaker 1: other night, tells how hard we're gonna work, that this
- 19:44Speaker 1: guy so gets it and it's not fake man. That
- 19:48Speaker 1: is sincere times one hundred and I think behind the scenes,
- 19:51Speaker 1: this guy will be working to keep things together and
- 19:55Speaker 1: and he'll he'll do it because he's good at it.
- 19:58Speaker 1: He's a great leader, and he's a guy you want
- 20:00Speaker 1: to play for, even though you're playing with him, not
- 20:03Speaker 1: for him. So much. Yeah, but guys, this road trip
- 20:06Speaker 1: is gonna be huge. Let's touch on that. We want
- 20:08Speaker 1: to remind our viewers here that Saturday night's game is
- 20:13Speaker 1: on Fox. So when you tune in Saturday night, go
- 20:16Speaker 1: to Fox Orioles and Rangers. Guys, this is a huge series.
- 20:20Speaker 1: The pitching matchup Saturday Night for the game on Fox
- 20:23Speaker 1: is Bradish and the Gram. It's going to be pretty impressive.
- 20:26Speaker 1: And the O's one game out, but there's like six
- 20:29Speaker 1: other teams. You can say it now, it's ridiculous this race.
- 20:33Speaker 1: So O's Texas big weekend coming up.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think the thing that can't be lost
- 20:39Speaker 2: to is Yes, I know the Rangers right there in
- 20:41Speaker 2: the standings, but at this point, it's just about stacking wins.
- 20:43Speaker 2: It's you know, you can't worry about your pony, You
- 20:45Speaker 2: can't worry about the standings as much as you want
- 20:47Speaker 2: to this time of year.
- 20:48Speaker 3: You just got to go out there.
- 20:49Speaker 2: And I think if they're able to stack a few
- 20:51Speaker 2: series wins together, build up some of the confidence. Kind
- 20:54Speaker 2: of have this trade deadline in the rear view because
- 20:57Speaker 2: I mean, we've been talking about this now for almost
- 20:58Speaker 2: three weeks. Can't imagine how long it's been on the
- 21:01Speaker 2: back of their mind. Now it's happened, and now it's
- 21:03Speaker 2: what do you do after it happens. But looking forward
- 21:06Speaker 2: to that pitching matchup, for sure, if you want to
- 21:07Speaker 2: see some unbelievable some of the best stuff in the
- 21:10Speaker 2: big leagues, Kyle Bradish and Jacob de Gram is it.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Jacob de Gram has been doing it for over a
- 21:15Speaker 2: decade now and has still some of the most explosive,
- 21:18Speaker 2: explosive stuff. And obviously, as O fans, you know what
- 21:21Speaker 2: Kyle Bradish brings to the table. So that's a big
- 21:23Speaker 2: time match up there, and hopefully the oas can kind
- 21:25Speaker 2: of just keep things moving in the right direction and
- 21:27Speaker 2: kind of get this trade deadline in the rear view mirror.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Brad, I know obviously everything that we've been talking about
- 21:34Speaker 4: the emotion of the clubhouse, the emotion coming from the
- 21:37Speaker 4: trade deadline. But focusing on this game, and I understand
- 21:40Speaker 4: that this is not your normal big time playoff implication
- 21:46Speaker 4: MATCHUPE to below five hundred teams. But you know a
- 21:50Speaker 4: lot of players, players speak, it's just another series. It's
- 21:53Speaker 4: just but is there extra juice in a series like this?
- 21:56Speaker 4: You're a game behind them? And there's not many games left.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Yeah, you try, you try your best to not think
- 22:03Speaker 2: about it, but I know, I mean, you can't help.
- 22:05Speaker 2: But when it's August, you're looking at the standings, you
- 22:07Speaker 2: know who's ahead of you. So it's as much as
- 22:09Speaker 2: like you say, it's you know, it's every other it's
- 22:11Speaker 2: like every other series. You know you can gain ground
- 22:14Speaker 2: or go past the Rangers, which would be one less
- 22:16Speaker 2: team in front of you at this point.
- 22:18Speaker 3: And so that's big.
- 22:19Speaker 2: And I think it's hard as a human to sit
- 22:21Speaker 2: there and see the standings in front of you and
- 22:24Speaker 2: as a baseball player say, oh, it's just another game.
- 22:26Speaker 3: It's just another series.
- 22:27Speaker 2: So I think as much as you try to keep
- 22:29Speaker 2: that in the back of your mind, when you go
- 22:31Speaker 2: out there, you know what the implications are of this series.
- 22:33Speaker 3: So these guys will be up forward and they know.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I think it's just this road trip, as weird as
- 22:38Speaker 2: it may sound, might come at the best time. You
- 22:40Speaker 2: had three games at home after the deadline. Now you're
- 22:42Speaker 2: gonna get six games on the road against teams that
- 22:45Speaker 2: are in front of you. It's a great time for
- 22:47Speaker 2: these guys to really get together, whether they're able to
- 22:49Speaker 2: get to Texas tonight, have a team dinner and just
- 22:51Speaker 2: kind of get together for the first time all together
- 22:54Speaker 2: and just sit and maybe talk about it.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Maybe you have to reminisce, maybe you talk you know,
- 22:58Speaker 3: you talk.
- 22:58Speaker 2: About at you talk about Tyler, talk about the guys
- 23:00Speaker 2: that have left, and maybe it's like a good way
- 23:02Speaker 2: to kind of put it in the past and kind
- 23:04Speaker 2: of really move forward with this group as a whole.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Sometimes teams are able to do that and kind of
- 23:09Speaker 2: use this as like their rally cry, this is what
- 23:11Speaker 2: can get you moving forward in the right direction. And
- 23:13Speaker 2: I really hope that they're able to do that this
- 23:15Speaker 2: road trip. I know things have changed a little bit
- 23:17Speaker 2: since I played. There's a lot more family members that
- 23:19Speaker 2: make road trips and stuff like that. But I hope
- 23:21Speaker 2: these guys are able to carve out, even if it's
- 23:22Speaker 2: just an hour, to kind of hang out with each
- 23:24Speaker 2: other and really just reconnect as a team and really
- 23:26Speaker 2: fight for each other moving forward, especially on this road
- 23:29Speaker 2: trip here, and keep them right in the standings where
- 23:31Speaker 2: they're at.
- 23:33Speaker 1: So Saturday night, it's The Orioles and the Rangers on Fox.
- 23:37Speaker 1: MLB on Fox is streaming on Fox one. The Race
- 23:40Speaker 1: to October starts. Now we have your front row seat

- 23:52Speaker 1: Then stream the twenty twenty six World Series live on
- 23:55Speaker 1: Fox one at home or on the go live or
- 23:58Speaker 1: on demand. Never miss the moment. Stream now, I'll start
- 24:00Speaker 1: your Fox one three day free trial today at foxwe
- 24:05Speaker 1: dot com. So, guys, let's turn to two of the
- 24:09Speaker 1: pitching prospects they got who will debut for the Oils
- 24:13Speaker 1: organization on Saturday night. This will be exciting. Anthony Ironson
- 24:19Speaker 1: came in the athlete trade. He is now the number
- 24:22Speaker 1: one ranked oriel prospect. This right hander twenty one years old,
- 24:26Speaker 1: who's four and oh with a one thirty two this
- 24:28Speaker 1: year twelve k per nine. He's a top one hundred
- 24:32Speaker 1: pitching prospect. In fact, he's number thirty four Baseball America,
- 24:35Speaker 1: number forty nine MLP Pipeline. Saturday Night in Bowie, Chesapeake
- 24:41Speaker 1: Bay Sox are at home and he will be on
- 24:44Speaker 1: the mound here. He is getting a strikeout in a
- 24:47Speaker 1: game earlier this year for the Double A Portland Sea
- 24:49Speaker 1: Dogs it's going to be exciting to see his debut
- 24:53Speaker 1: and a little pressure, I would think Brad on these
- 24:55Speaker 1: young guys when they were with a new team and
- 24:58Speaker 1: fans want to see what they can do. We've heard
- 25:00Speaker 1: how good they are, and then there they are on
- 25:03Speaker 1: the mound, So we'll see how it works out for him.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely gonna be a little bit different than
- 25:08Speaker 2: being in your original organization that draft of you, and
- 25:11Speaker 2: they kind of know what to expect when you make
- 25:13Speaker 2: a big trade like that and you know you're the headliner.
- 25:15Speaker 3: These guys aren't. You know, they're not naive to that.
- 25:18Speaker 2: So when you go to the new fan base, you
- 25:19Speaker 2: want to show off what you got and I think
- 25:21Speaker 2: they're going to be excited to be out there, and
- 25:23Speaker 2: I would be surprised if you see some stuff you
- 25:25Speaker 2: haven't seen from them before, a little extra velocity, you know.
- 25:28Speaker 2: The other night, Ben McDonald was talking about both the
- 25:30Speaker 2: big guys that got from the Red Sox and he
- 25:32Speaker 2: had gets to do a lot of the SEC games
- 25:35Speaker 2: and he saw them both pitch against each other and
- 25:37Speaker 2: had some really really high remarks on both those guys,
- 25:41Speaker 2: especially Irons, and he said, Kyle Bradish like, and that's
- 25:44Speaker 2: that's not a bad guy to hear that. If you're
- 25:46Speaker 2: an Oriels fan, you know what he brings. He said
- 25:47Speaker 2: he can spin the ball as good as anybody he
- 25:49Speaker 2: saw at the college level. So I think if you
- 25:52Speaker 2: have a chance to go to Chesapeake to check it out,
- 25:54Speaker 2: I think it'd be a great, great start to go
- 25:56Speaker 2: watch them see what they probably gonna be in Candy
- 25:59Speaker 2: Yarts here soon.
- 26:00Speaker 3: So that's an exciting thing to go see.
- 26:03Speaker 5: Yeah, just Karner.
- 26:04Speaker 1: They have a minor league right now, sorry Tim, with Jowa,
- 26:07Speaker 1: Caden Hunter, Louis de Leon, and they ranked this guy
- 26:11Speaker 1: ahead of all of them. Yeah, it gets your attention, uh,
- 26:15Speaker 1: right now?
- 26:16Speaker 5: And Steve didn't daily Owe.
- 26:17Speaker 4: He was just named pitcher of the month right for
- 26:21Speaker 4: Double A international, not internationally, Yeah, easy, of course, yes,
- 26:26Speaker 4: yeah yeah since then, but yeah, it's really exciting the
- 26:29Speaker 4: pitching depth that they've been able to cultivate, because even
- 26:34Speaker 4: prior to these trades, where obviously a lot of these
- 26:37Speaker 4: guys coming back or pictures we've been talking during these episodes,
- 26:40Speaker 4: how wow, man, the majority of their top ten top
- 26:43Speaker 4: fifteen prospects or pitchers, and now you add a bona
- 26:46Speaker 4: fide top fifty prospect in Ironsen. It's definitely huge, and
- 26:52Speaker 4: some people are saying that this guy has a great
- 26:54Speaker 4: chance at debuting next year, and even someone they got
- 26:58Speaker 4: back this year, Michael Faire from The Raise. People are saying,
- 27:02Speaker 4: maybe he makes his debut before this season's all said
- 27:05Speaker 4: and done.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Michael I said, he's just a call away.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Picture I like a lot we touched on that
- 27:11Speaker 1: last show. But the other picture they got from Boston
- 27:14Speaker 1: is this young man pitching here for the Greenville Drive
- 27:17Speaker 1: in high A, Kyson Witherspoon. He's now ranked by MLB
- 27:21Speaker 1: pipline as year's number seven prospect. He was the fifteenth
- 27:24Speaker 1: pick of the draft last year out of University of Oklahoma,
- 27:28Speaker 1: where he had a great year for the Sooners in
- 27:30Speaker 1: the SEC, touching ninety nine got a five million dollars
- 27:34Speaker 1: signing bonus. He has struggled a little bit this year
- 27:37Speaker 1: with a four to seven eightyra. I talked to Jim
- 27:40Speaker 1: Kallus yesterday and wrote about that on my sub stack today,
- 27:44Speaker 1: a long profile of these two kids, and Witherspoon has
- 27:47Speaker 1: been a little disappointing. His fastball's getting hit, his secondaries
- 27:51Speaker 1: have been inconsistent, they're not seeing what they saw in
- 27:54Speaker 1: college right now. And I had one fan of the
- 27:58Speaker 1: Red Sox today communicate with me that feels like they
- 28:02Speaker 1: tried to change his wind up or something, So who knows.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I'd like to talk to him and find out. He
- 28:07Speaker 1: will pitch for Frederick at Jersey Shore Saturday night. So
- 28:13Speaker 1: it's gonna be interesting to see fifteenth picking the draft
- 28:16Speaker 1: already getting some criticism.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think that's about to happen, especially
- 28:21Speaker 2: when you're one of the big pieces in the trade.
- 28:22Speaker 2: But you know, when both these guys pitching the SEC,
- 28:25Speaker 2: there's not a better college conference, and a lot of
- 28:27Speaker 2: times these guys go right to Double A. But I
- 28:29Speaker 2: think the professional levels it's a little different. You're not
- 28:32Speaker 2: throwing once a week, You're throwing once every five days,
- 28:34Speaker 2: and I think you could take a little bit of time. Obviously,
- 28:36Speaker 2: when you're a first round pick, you want to see
- 28:37Speaker 2: these guys crews right up to the big leagues, but
- 28:39Speaker 2: sometimes it takes a year or two.
- 28:41Speaker 3: So I mean, the stuff is there.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I think it's just more about getting comfortable and now
- 28:45Speaker 2: getting traded to another organization within a year of getting
- 28:48Speaker 2: drafted is another change that will come his way.
- 28:50Speaker 3: But you never know.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Sometimes you go to a new team, they see something
- 28:53Speaker 2: a little different. They let you go back to doing
- 28:55Speaker 2: what you're doing in college. Let's try this slider. Let's
- 28:57Speaker 2: try that slider, and all of a sudden things take off.
- 29:00Speaker 2: When you have a ninety nine mile an hour fastball
- 29:02Speaker 2: and you're seen as a starting pitcher, good things can
- 29:04Speaker 2: come from that.
- 29:05Speaker 3: So I think that's one of the positives for him.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Maybe didn't get off, you know, on the right foot
- 29:09Speaker 2: with the Red Sox, but you come over the Oils Organization,
- 29:12Speaker 2: get some new eyes on you, and maybe they just
- 29:14Speaker 2: get you back to what you needed to do in
- 29:16Speaker 2: college and you just kind of cruise from there. But
- 29:18Speaker 2: definitely two exciting arms to see and Glid. They're making
- 29:21Speaker 2: their debuts for the Oils Organization here this weekend.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Fangrafts has a very interesting way of ranking farm systems.
- 29:30Speaker 1: They try to do it by future value and this
- 29:33Speaker 1: gets into the millions and millions of dollars, and they
- 29:36Speaker 1: have ranked the oil farm number two. Right now. That's
- 29:40Speaker 1: here's a guy who loves it more than anybody just about.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I say that's a little high right now too. I
- 29:45Speaker 1: thought they were eight ten, six, seven, somewhere in there.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Maybe after these trades. It really doesn't matter. What matters
- 29:53Speaker 1: is how many of these guys get there and can
- 29:55Speaker 1: they help Baltimore when they do, Because as the fans
- 29:58Speaker 1: would scream at me, Steve, we don't want the number
- 30:00Speaker 1: one farm, we want the number one MLBAT team.
- 30:02Speaker 5: I got that.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Yeah. I'll also add this caveat if you have surplus
- 30:07Speaker 1: of young pitching prospects, you can do a lot with that,
- 30:12Speaker 1: and everybody in baseball likes pitching prospects.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:16Speaker 2: And I think also too, with having all these arms
- 30:19Speaker 2: stacked in the system, now you kind of build this
- 30:21Speaker 2: culture of we're gonna go up there and we're gonna dominate.
- 30:23Speaker 2: We're gonna turn this in from being, you know, a
- 30:25Speaker 2: hitting prospect organization to a pitching prospect organization. And those
- 30:29Speaker 2: guys can push each other a lot of times. And
- 30:30Speaker 2: I think that's even when you can stack talent in
- 30:33Speaker 2: the minor leagues, guys can really push each other to
- 30:36Speaker 2: the next level.
- 30:36Speaker 3: And I think that's that's only a good thing.
- 30:38Speaker 2: You can only put as many prospects as you can
- 30:40Speaker 2: in the minor leagues. Yeah, they're not all going to
- 30:42Speaker 2: paint out at the big league level. But I think
- 30:44Speaker 2: the more talent you get in your system, especially on
- 30:46Speaker 2: the pitching side, which I feel like hasn't happened in
- 30:48Speaker 2: the Oils organization in a long time. I think it's
- 30:50Speaker 2: a great thing to see and whatever. Like I said,
- 30:52Speaker 2: it's not gonna always work out, but they're doing the
- 30:55Speaker 2: best they can right now by stacking the pitching guys
- 30:56Speaker 2: together and hopefully they can take each other to the
- 30:59Speaker 2: next level and beyond from there.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I wish I knew the number off the top
- 31:03Speaker 4: of my head. I'll look it up after the show.
- 31:05Speaker 4: But Ironston, maybe when it's all said and done, he
- 31:09Speaker 4: could rival where Grayson Rodriguez was ranked in these top
- 31:12Speaker 4: one hundred prospects list. I mean, Steve, I'm not sure
- 31:15Speaker 4: if you remember, but him being what thirty three or
- 31:18Speaker 4: whatever in Baseball America.
- 31:19Speaker 5: That's that's really impressive.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Grayson got top ten.
- 31:24Speaker 5: I think it was okay. I was thinking points. Maybe
- 31:27Speaker 5: I was.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Wrong, and he and Manny were like top ten twelve
- 31:29Speaker 1: at one point. Cream of the crop. He is about
- 31:32Speaker 1: the highest, and dial Hall was top one.
- 31:34Speaker 5: He was up there.
- 31:35Speaker 1: The Oriels have not had a lot of top one
- 31:37Speaker 1: under pitching prospects since the duo. You know, de Leon
- 31:41Speaker 1: back end for a little bit. So this kid's he's
- 31:45Speaker 1: thirty three, is pretty solid, so we're going to see
- 31:47Speaker 1: how it works out for him. Guys, I made it
- 31:50Speaker 1: through the show. I'm going for another hot key and
- 31:53Speaker 1: Sunday I will sound a lot better than this. I
- 31:56Speaker 1: feel pretty good. I just don't sound very good. Some
- 32:00Speaker 1: fans are screaming at their computer. What else, Steve? Anyway,
- 32:04Speaker 1: enjoy it, guys, and we'll talk to you soon. Thanks
- 32:07Speaker 1: for putting up with it. My voice everybody. Catch you
- 32:10Speaker 1: next time on Birdland Territory
