- 1:07four powered by the Inside of the Birds podcast. All Right,
- 1:10Adam Lorraine, I guess up in the Philly area, not
- 1:13down here quite yet, but I'm sure it's coming.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I love well, you know, right over the bridge.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:18Speaker 2: It's uh. I'm glad they did this. Now. One of
- 1:21the worst things. I don't know if you've ever had
- 1:23this happen where. Okay, so you're going to the park,
- 1:26you're going to CBP and they don't cancel and you
- 1:29get there. It's like the worst thing ever. It's kind
- 1:32of like getting in your flight canceled at the worst
- 1:35at the last minute. When you get to the airport,
- 1:36you're like, well, why could you cancel it earlier if
- 1:38the weather is bad? Yep, so there's not gonna be
- 1:41a break in the weather. So yeah, I've done the
- 1:43day night doubleheaders before. When now, this is when I
- 1:47was a diehard, Like this is going back probably when
- 1:50I when I was in high school or in my
- 1:51early twenties. Those are a tough deal, man, because you
- 1:56if you don't live close to the this is back
- 1:58when they of course with the VAT But if you
- 2:00don't live close Mike it's a little bit more of
- 2:02a challenge to come back.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean obviously, and the people from down here too.
- 2:07If you're coming from down here, you don't know you
- 2:09drive up there, you're kind of stuck in the middle.
- 2:11Speaker 3: So no phills today. But we got some football for
- 2:14you today. We got some.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Football news today. The Steelers they make a big trade today.
- 2:19They get yesterday Jalen Ramsey gets traded with Jono Smith,
- 2:23the tight end. They end up getting Mika Fitzpatrick back
- 2:27in this deal. Steelers are making all sorts of moves here.
- 2:30So why do the Steelers make this deal?
- 2:32Speaker 2: All right? So a couple things here. First of all,
- 2:34John O. Smith is from Philadelphia, by the way, so
- 2:38he's an interesting player, Mike. He's what we call two
- 2:41eight ted, and he could block, he could run, kind
- 2:43of like Dallas Goddter. He signed a mega contract back
- 2:46in twenty twenty one with the Patriots because he was
- 2:50with the Titans then and he was like one of
- 2:53the better young tight ends of the league. And unfortunately
- 2:56Smith didn't play well for the Patriots. They got rid
- 2:58of him after two years. He goes to Atlanta revised
- 3:01his career under Arthur Smith, who he played for with
- 3:04the Titans when Smith was their their offense coordinator, and
- 3:08he played for Arthur when Arthur was the play caller
- 3:10and head coach of the Falcons. And then he takes
- 3:14this game to another level. It was really good with Miami,
- 3:16but he wants one more deal. He won one more
- 3:18mega deal and he didn't get it, and Miami was
- 3:22okay with him making over four million, but they were
- 3:25not going to extend his contract, so they traded him
- 3:28to Pittsburgh. Now I know, Mike, it's really odd, Like
- 3:31when you look at some of these movies, you go,
- 3:32wait a minute. They're paying the Steels are paying Pat
- 3:35Fryarmouth over twelve million, and they already signed Darius Slay
- 3:41for ten million and have Joey Porter junior at corners.
- 3:43So what are they doing? Well, a couple of things here, Mike.
- 3:47They're what we call a heavy twelve personnel team. They
- 3:50play a lot of two tight ends and Arthur Smith
- 3:53again does know John Smith because he's coached him with
- 3:55two different spots, and they don't. They're not very deep
- 3:58at receivers, so I could certainly understand this. This makes
- 4:01a lot of sense. Now, how are they gonna make
- 4:03the Jalalen Ramsey thing work. Well, you have to look
- 4:05at something here. Jarry Slade's thirty four. He's the aldest
- 4:08starting corn of the National Football League. Jalen Ramsey signed
- 4:11for four more seasons, so as long as he plays well,
- 4:15he'll be there a long time. And they were they'll
- 4:18make it work. Mike. There's nothing wrong with being very
- 4:20deep a corner. And Jalen Ramsey's going to make you know,
- 4:23just under twenty million from the Steelers this season, so
- 4:25he'll be playing every down if he's if he's healthy,
- 4:28just about or most down. So the bottom line is, Mike,
- 4:31they're gonna make it work. And to make the money
- 4:34work because they took it in a lot of cash.
- 4:36They had to move somebody. They got a clear up
- 4:37some cash, so they cleared up Micka Fitzpatrick. Who, Mike, See,
- 4:40this is the thing. This is like if you just
- 4:43asked a lot of fans who don't follow the Steelers. Oh,
- 4:45Micka Fitzpatrick, he's a great player. Well, he didn't really
- 4:48make a lot of plays on the ball, not just
- 4:50that he only had one interception and low beast defense.
- 4:54He just didn't make any plays. His tape wasn't very good,
- 4:58so it mean it's a fine player, but he's not
- 5:00special anymore. And he goes back, as you said, back
- 5:03to where he was a first round pickts very bizarre.
- 5:06This is just a weird deal. So he goes back.
- 5:09And then the trade that went down today the Titans
- 5:12because excuse me, the Dolphins, because they traded Jonathan Smith.
- 5:15They needed to get a tight end. So Darren Waller
- 5:17came out of retirement, who looked very good for a
- 5:20short period of time with the Giants, and the hamstring
- 5:22problem got him again and he retired. He's coming out
- 5:25of retirement, I'm told. One of the reasons why, not
- 5:28the only reason, but one of the reasons why he
- 5:31is coming out of retirement because he's close with Frank Smith.
- 5:35They know the Smith, he's the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins.
- 5:39That two know each other from previous stops, so that
- 5:42they're very close. So that has something to do with it.
- 5:45But Darren Waller and Mike has overcome a lot in
- 5:48his career with Southern's abuse. He got over that issue.
- 5:51He was a former receiver, if you remember with the Ravens.
- 5:54They moved him to tight end and he really blew
- 5:56it up with the Raiders and it unfortunately hamstring injuries
- 6:02got him. But he's coming out of retirement. The Dolphins
- 6:04are a team. If you're a Dolphins fan, I know,
- 6:06the Dolphins are a pretty good national following. Like, on
- 6:09one hand, you see the Steelers who are going for
- 6:10they clearly Aaron Rodgers DK Metcalf trade. Then you're the
- 6:14Then you're the Dolphins. Mike, people are like, what are
- 6:16they trying to do? They're a team that I've used
- 6:19this term. They're stuck in neutral, They're stuck in the middle.
- 6:21They just don't know who they want to be.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's for sure. The Dolphins perpetually, you know, haven't
- 6:26been really good since Dan Marino left town the Dolphins.
- 6:30Was last time the Dolphins won a playoff game? My gosh,
- 6:32it seems like they have been kind of, as you
- 6:35just said, stuck in neutral.
- 6:36Speaker 3: There.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Real quick, we've been talking Steelers there. Do you and
- 6:40envision that TJ. Watt is playing for somebody else?
- 6:44Speaker 2: Let me dress that. So I did a cool piece
- 6:47for Inside the Birds today on it's on pot or YouTube.
- 6:50So I did it like a thirty minute video on
- 6:52both teams, the Dolphins and a little bit on the Giants,
- 6:55but Dolphins because of the Waller trade. Dolphins and Steeler stuff.
- 7:00But with TJ. Watt, my understanding is they would like
- 7:04to extend his contract, like they definitely want him Nis
- 7:06crew with the Steelers, they want to keep them the
- 7:08Steelers due. But and you have to remember, Mike, the TJ.
- 7:13Watt extension that happened three years ago. People were worried
- 7:15about it. It didn't get done until September tenth, right
- 7:18around when the start of the season happened. So look,
- 7:21they have time now. He ready showed that he's not
- 7:23happy and he missed their mandatory camp. That shows that
- 7:26he's serious. And he had a hold in the last
- 7:30time more or less. So you could see that happening. Now,
- 7:34why would you trade him? Well, he does turn thirty
- 7:36one this fall. He's had some injuries in his career.
- 7:39You have to be careful, Mike, and particularly this sport.
- 7:43He's not a quarterback who could play till his late
- 7:45thirties early forties. He's an that rusher. These guys usually
- 7:49kind of losing around thirty three years old thirty four
- 7:52when they're done. It's highly the Brandon Grave situation thirty
- 7:56six and Brandon had a shriff of injuries. You rarely
- 7:59see guys play that all that long, so you got
- 8:03to be careful. And then you've got the Michael Parsons
- 8:06contract that should average forty million plus a season. Well,
- 8:10if i'm TJ. Watt, I want to see what that
- 8:12deal looks like. Not that he's going to get forty
- 8:14million this season, but you want to see how close
- 8:16you can get. You want to see the structure and
- 8:19the Steelers look they because if you trade TJ. Watt,
- 8:23I mean I don't know. They love Nate Nick Herbgnate's
- 8:26younger brother. But that's not a reason to make this.
- 8:29To make a trade. You you want to keep them.
- 8:32You want Watt, who's probably going to be Hall of
- 8:33Famer close to it like his brother. You want to
- 8:36be careful because you don't want to get worse when
- 8:40you're going for it. Mike. That's why I don't see
- 8:42it happening. I don't rule it out until you got
- 8:45a deal done. You don't have a deal done, and
- 8:47I've used you know, I've told you about this over
- 8:49the years when I talk to the Raiders when they
- 8:51swore to me they were not going to trade Khalil Mack.
- 8:55John Gruden got concerned that Mack wouldn't show up. He
- 8:58was wrong, by the way, Mac she went on the
- 9:00records that he never thought of missing the start of
- 9:02the season with the Raiders. They Gruden got worried and
- 9:05he traded to the Bear. So you never say never
- 9:08with these things. We've sent a lot of the Steelers,
- 9:10by the way, before we move on here, this is
- 9:13an old school team that usually does not get very
- 9:15involved in the trademarket or a free agency that is
- 9:18now change with DK Metcalf, Jonah Smith, Janen Ramsey, Aaron Rodgers,
- 9:24now Andy Widdell. I know he doesn't have personal control.
- 9:27He's the assistant shoeneral manager. Just to remember where he
- 9:30came from from, Philly. Ol Mar Kahn is the general manager.
- 9:33He makes all the decisions. But I mean, you wonder
- 9:36what kind of influenced and he could have on his
- 9:37close friend Omar Con. I'm just bringing that up because
- 9:40just fascinating. They've never been like this before. The Steelers
- 9:43never get involved like this, but now they are.
- 9:45Speaker 1: By the way, Adam Kaplin's with US year Football and
- 9:48for last time the Dolphins won a playoff game, it
- 9:50was the year two thousand.
- 9:52Speaker 3: The head coach, Are you serious? It was dape As
- 9:55J Peely Fiedler.
- 9:57Speaker 2: You're gonna say Jake Peterson, Jay Fiedler. Sorry, oh J Fielder,
- 10:02J Fielder? Yes, yes, from where do you go to Cornell?
- 10:04Maybe that's sound right?
- 10:05Speaker 3: Yeah, a couple of coffee? Fieedler.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Well, no, there wasa or need to go to Hopster.
- 10:10I can't remember where Jay Fielder went, but yeah that yeah, yeah, wow,
- 10:14that that's crazy man Dartmouth.
- 10:17Speaker 3: He went to Dartmouth, Dartmouth.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Okay, IVY League, Yes, IVY League, ecty won a playoff game?
- 10:22What's that?
- 10:23Speaker 3: IVY League?
- 10:23Speaker 1: And by the way, he did have a cup of
- 10:25coffee with the Eagles in nineteen years.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna say, might have been at the
- 10:33end of the rich co Tite era of fact. Maybe
- 10:35that's why you see rich Cochite if you remember. And
- 10:39he was terrible for the Jets. What were they won
- 10:40in fifteen? He brought in a number of former Eagles
- 10:43and unfortunately didn't work out well. But yeah, I just
- 10:45wanted to talk about the Steelers trade because when we
- 10:49see what's going on the NBN. I heard your your
- 10:51segment earlier talking six Ers and obviously NBA Fridge's wild,
- 10:55but it is very rare that we see a trade
- 10:58of this magnitude in June. At the end of June,
- 11:01of course, it's it was cool. I mean, it was
- 11:03good to see that. And I'm just kind of fascinating
- 11:06because the Steelers, this is not what they do, but
- 11:09you know what, you got to shake it up sometimes.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Good for them, all right, I do want to get
- 11:14into this.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I did listen to the Pablo Tore I'm halfway through
- 11:18with Mike Florio, about seventy five percent through.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I was listening to it the other day. And so this.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Whole thing with the collusion and the arbitrators in regard
- 11:31to veteran contracts here do we ever see that happening.
- 11:37We've seen these teams some sort of circumvent it with
- 11:40you know, all sorts of different ways. But that whole
- 11:44podcast is fascinating. Number One, if you haven't heard of
- 11:46at the Pablo Tore Mike Florio conversation on the collusion situation,
- 11:52I'm up right around the point where they're talking about
- 11:55the new player rep when JT. Trader got you know,
- 11:58basically cut and then his So that's about where I'm
- 12:00at here. Do you ever think we'll see these guaranteed
- 12:03contracts in the NFL?
- 12:05Speaker 2: No, No, I don't. Now, all right, I'm gonna go.
- 12:07You said something in passing and let me kind of
- 12:09extrapolate and explain and take it a little farther. So
- 12:13we've seen one, and that's the whole part of this
- 12:19alleged collusion. Were strongly suggested that teams don't do anything
- 12:25like this in the NFL's Management Council, which has to
- 12:28approve every NFL contract, that the terms are sent in
- 12:30the structure, and there's certain way contracts have to be done,
- 12:33and they could they sometimes don't get passed so the
- 12:37language is adjusted. But so what happened was Mike nin
- 12:42Pablo Terrey and Mike talk about it. But Pablo got
- 12:46hold of the Arbitrator's rule, in which is sixty one
- 12:49pages where it says, quote, there was a little question
- 12:52that the NFL Management Council, with a blessing of the Commissioner,
- 12:56couraged thirty two clubs to reduce guarantees that our veteran
- 12:59contracts at the twenty two annual owners mings, Well, guess what.
- 13:02I was there at Palm Beach and I'll never forget this, Mike.
- 13:07So I ran into a bunch of contract negotiators that
- 13:09were there and general managers and so many teams were
- 13:12upset with the Browns. I'm not going to use the
- 13:14language that they used, but they were super mad, like,
- 13:18how could you do a contract like this, specifically for
- 13:21a guy had allegations against them off the field. Pretty serious.
- 13:24Not charge anything with anything with Deshaun Watson, but but
- 13:28when you do a contract like this, you deal with
- 13:31a guy with a which questionable character, and you're also
- 13:35going against the way things are being done, which, honestly, Mike,
- 13:40players deserve it. Now, I'm not saying Deshaun Watson did.
- 13:42He didn't. By the way, the last good season he
- 13:44had was in twenty twenty, so it wasn't like he
- 13:48was coming off a good year. But when you really
- 13:52look at it, Kirk Cousins had the three years fully
- 13:53guaranteed when he went to Minnesota coming over from Washington.
- 13:59But the reason I don't think it'll happen, Mike and
- 14:01the NFLPI did not push even remotely hard enough in
- 14:05twenty twenty, they seem to cave on that stuff. They
- 14:08just they always pick what they want light off season.
- 14:13They don't want to be bothered by coaches when they're
- 14:15in the building before, when they're working out in February
- 14:20and March, they don't want to be told what to
- 14:22do until May or whatever the case may be. For OTAs,
- 14:26they just never really push for fully guaranteed money, and
- 14:29owners are not. I just don't think it'll ever happen.
- 14:32I remember in eleven it was brought up briefly. Wasn't
- 14:35even close. Twenty twenty a little bit stronger. Nope, not
- 14:38even close. Now we've had one deal. Now what you're
- 14:42seeing now is Mike, and I'll give you a little
- 14:44bit before I move on. Here, you're seeing a bunch
- 14:47of three years fully guaranteed signing. If they're called an
- 14:50advanced guarantee. If they're on the roster in year free
- 14:54in March, you're four is guaranteed. But they have to
- 14:57be on the roster then to get the next year
- 14:59fully game garantee. Now the other thing is and and
- 15:02Mike talks about this Florio and this has been a
- 15:05pet peeve of mine. It's called the NFL's funding rule
- 15:08almost like ninety percent of full of guaranteed money. It's signing,
- 15:12Mike has to be put in a separate account, an
- 15:14escrow account, because it's based on forty or fifty years
- 15:19going back when clubs weren't very cash rich as they
- 15:22are now, and there was a worry from the NFLPA
- 15:25that some of these clubs can run out of money.
- 15:27Trust me on this mic, that ain't happening anymore, or
- 15:30that will never happen. Look, you saw when Leonard Toast
- 15:32almost moved the Eagles to Phoenix. Yeah, I remember that
- 15:36nteen eighty four, I Mike, I'm telling you, like that
- 15:40was pretty real. That was a real story. Leonard Toast,
- 15:44as you might remember, lost a lot of money and
- 15:47that's not happening anymore. And that's that rule's got to
- 15:50be taken out a place. So that's another part of
- 15:52the side. Just what I'm glad you brought this up,
- 15:54because this is not like the NBA with these fully
- 15:57guaranteed contracts for five six years and you know Baseball's
- 16:00sanity with ten eleven, twelve fully guaranteed. They adn't happen
- 16:03in the NFL. Man and last Physical Sports obviously, and a.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Lot of people wonder if you want to listen to
- 16:07the podcast with Florio and Pablo Torre, you go check
- 16:09it out on all podcasting blackboards. But why hasn't this
- 16:13collusion thing been talked about more?
- 16:15Speaker 3: Has been one of those I don't know.
- 16:17Speaker 2: I mean, I'm Mike, I I'm talking about with you.
- 16:21I talked about the Fox I work for Fox Sports
- 16:23Ready on the weekends. I do a couple of seconds
- 16:26with them on Saturday and Sunday. We talked about it.
- 16:29I've talked with Carrie Rhoades. You know, I've known that
- 16:32Fox Sports Ready for a number of years. It's a
- 16:34real thing. It's it's terrible that the NFLPA didn't get
- 16:38it out there. They should have put a statement out.
- 16:42Now they may be embarrassed by the ruling, but how
- 16:44do you not get that out there? What? I can't
- 16:47figure that out. I mean, I know they're not happy
- 16:49about it, but so what said you say? They're not
- 16:51happy with the ruling and they're going to fight like
- 16:53hel for that.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Now.
- 16:54Speaker 2: The CBA is not up till March March of twenty
- 16:58thirty one, so you've got five years. But this is
- 17:02just ridiculous, Mike, that they didn't want that out. Mike's right,
- 17:06Florida's right. I'm just I'm stunned by it.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Well, Adam Kaplan a football at four in the Buffs,
- 17:12which gets us another day closer to Eagles training camp.
- 17:15Speaker 3: They report three weeks from today.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Ah yeah, man, I'm looking forward to it. And by
- 17:22the way, when the Browns come in for two practices, yeah,
- 17:24which they've done before, they did it two years ago. Here.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Yes, we will be all over that of course. And
- 17:28the guys over at the Inside of the Birds podcast.
- 17:30You can check out all of their coverage over at
- 17:33Inside the Birds dot com and wherever you get your podcast. Adam,
- 17:36good stuff, man, Thank you,
