- 0:00When you think of the paranormal realm, what is the first thing
- 0:03that comes to your mind? Is it a haunted place?
- 0:07A person who's being tormented by unseen forces?
- 0:11Or an object like a doll that is seemingly taken on a life of its
- 0:16own? Or perhaps a little of all three
- 0:19and more. But if you consider that a
- 0:22vehicle could be haunted, considering if objects could be
- 0:26haunted. It seems possible to me that
- 0:28this story may just convince you that something inhabits this
- 0:32vehicle, in particular something malevolent.
- 0:36This strange tale over the decades has seemed to take on a
- 0:39life of its own, and not only has it been requested, but
- 0:43deserves its very own rendition. Here on mystery Archives, this
- 0:48is the haunting story of James Dean's cursed car and whether or
- 0:52not it continues to plague the lives.
- 0:54Of those who possess its parts, James Dean, both in the 50s at
- 1:01the height of his fame and even today, is widely considered a
- 1:05Hollywood icon. Born James Byron Dean in 1931,
- 1:10he was born into a humble background in Marion IN the only
- 1:15child of Mildred Wilson and Wynton Dean.
- 1:19Growing up, he excelled in school both academically and
- 1:22athletically. Playing varsity baseball and
- 1:25basketball as well as becoming an avid student of drama, His
- 1:30efforts would eventually land him at UCLA in 1949 after his
- 1:35high school graduation where he began to truly pursue his
- 1:39passion for acting. He had first started out as a
- 1:42pre law major, but would soon switches major to drama, his
- 1:48first role in college that truly made him consider becoming an
- 1:51actor. Was when he was selected out of
- 1:54a group of 350 other actors to portray Malcolm and the play
- 1:59Macbeth. Shortly after this, he also
- 2:02began acting in James Whitmore's workshop.
- 2:06Although he loved acting, his father didn't, and his choice of
- 2:10major would soon alienate the two from each other.
- 2:14But refusing to give up on his dreams, James would drop out of
- 2:17UCLA in January of 1951. To pursue a fulltime career as
- 2:23an actor. It was during this time that he
- 2:26began to pay his dues, so to speak, first starring in a Pepsi
- 2:30commercial, then landing a series of walk on roles in
- 2:34various movies such as Fixed Bayonets, Sailor Beware and Has
- 2:39Anybody Seen My Gal? While struggling to pay the
- 2:42bills whilst chasing his dreams. James also worked as a parking
- 2:46lot attendant at CBS Studios. Where he would eventually meet
- 2:50Rogers Bracket, a radio director and agent who offered him
- 2:55professional advice and guidance to assist him in furthering his
- 2:59career, Bracket would open a major door for James, a starring
- 3:03role in the Broadway play See the Jaguar, which would indeed
- 3:08continue to open many other opportunities for the aspiring
- 3:11actor. Moving from walk on roles and
- 3:14movies to several television appearances and soon a major
- 3:18role in a major film, he would finally receive his big break in
- 3:221953 where he starred in the movie East of Eden.
- 3:27It was here that his complexity as an actor and improv skills
- 3:31were finally able to shine. Almost immediately after East of
- 3:35Eden premiered, Dean would quickly pick up another and an
- 3:39even bigger role in Rebel Without a Cause.
- 3:42As well as another film called Giant Following soon after,
- 3:47Rebel Without a Cause is what seemed to make Dean a cultural
- 3:50icon, becoming not only an admired actor to many, but a
- 3:54heartthrob as well to thousands. In 1954, shortly after East of
- 4:00Eden had concluded being filmed, James began to take an interest
- 4:04in auto racing. He purchased several vehicles
- 4:07for the hobby, including a Triumph Tiger T110.
- 4:12In a Porsche 356, James competed in his first professional event
- 4:17at Palm Springs Rd. Races, held in Palm Springs, CA
- 4:21where he achieved first place in the Novice class and 2nd place
- 4:26for the main event. He continued to race and would
- 4:29race at Bakersfield a month later where he would take first
- 4:33in his class and 3rd overall, really taking to the motorsport
- 4:38he hoped to compete in the Indianapolis 500.
- 4:42But his busy filming schedule unfortunately made this
- 4:45impossible. His final race would occur in
- 4:48Santa Barbara on May 30th, 1955. During this race, he was
- 4:54unfortunately unable to finish due to a blown piston.
- 4:57His racing career was then placed on hold by Warner
- 5:00Brothers, the studio in charge of the film Giant, until filming
- 5:05was finished. Dean would finish his scenes and
- 5:09while Giant was in post production.
- 5:11But the ban lifted. He decided that he would race
- 5:14again. However, this time he wanted
- 5:17something stronger and faster. On September 23rd, 1955, James
- 5:24purchased a new 1955 Porsche 550 Spider and brought it to the
- 5:29legendary flimflammer George Barris to have it personalized
- 5:34before his next race. During the customization
- 5:38process, he chose tartan seeds. The number 130 emblazoned upon
- 5:43the hood and the name Little Bastard painted on the back just
- 5:48underneath the Porsche emblem on the engine cover.
- 5:52Almost as soon as his car was done being customized and James
- 5:55began to drive it around, there was a series of omens that
- 6:00should have alerted him that something wasn't quite normal
- 6:03with Little Bastard later that day on September 23rd.
- 6:08James was driving his new car around Los Angeles, where he met
- 6:12up with British actor Alec Guinness to show him his new
- 6:16toy. Almost immediately, Alec became
- 6:19very wary of the car. In his personal diary he said
- 6:23this in regards to seeing it for the first time, and this is also
- 6:27a summary of what he told James himself.
- 6:29In person that day. The sports car looked sinister
- 6:33to me, exhausted, hungry. Feeling a little ill tempered in
- 6:38spite of Dean's kindness, I heard myself saying in a voice
- 6:42that I could hardly recognize as my own.
- 6:45Please never get in it. If you get in that car, you'll
- 6:49be found dead in it by this time next week.
- 6:52After being told that his car seemed sinister and that he
- 6:56would be found dead in it by this time next week, all James
- 7:00did was laugh exactly one week later, on September the 30th.
- 7:06James Dean and Rolf Vuteraj, a former Luftwaffe pilot and
- 7:11factory trained Porsche mechanic, were at Competition
- 7:14Motors in Hollywood preparing Little Bastard for racing that
- 7:19week at the Salinas Rd. Races in Salinas, CA.
- 7:23The intent was for Dean to transport the car via trailer to
- 7:27Salinas behind his 1955 Ford Country Squire with his
- 7:32photographer Bill Hickman. But before it could be raced,
- 7:37the car needed some breakin miles on it to make sure
- 7:40everything was in working order. Rolf suggested driving the car
- 7:44to Salinas to break in the engine and familiarize himself
- 7:48with his new vehicle. He would also ride with him
- 7:52after having a cup of coffee across the street from
- 7:55Competition Motors at 1:15 PM, the group departed for Salinas
- 8:01at 3:30 PM. Patrolman OV Hunter.
- 8:04Said he stopped and wrote Dean a ticket just South of
- 8:07Bakersfield, CA, for driving 65 mph and a 55.
- 8:13Hickman, who was towing the trailer, would receive a ticket
- 8:17for 20 miles over the speed limit because he was towing a
- 8:20trailer in which the maximum speed allowed would have only
- 8:23been 45 mph. The crew would then stop at
- 8:27Blackwell's Corner on Route 466 for drinks.
- 8:31Here they also met up with Lance Ravendlow.
- 8:34And Bruce Kessler, two other racers who would also be
- 8:38competing in the Salinas Rd. races once they had departed.
- 8:42At about 5:15 PM, Dean and Hickman drove W towards Paso
- 8:47Robles. 1/2. An hour later, a black and white
- 8:501950 Ford Tudor coupe was headed E on 466.
- 8:55The vehicle was being driven by a 23 year old California
- 8:59polytechnical student, a man with a strange name of Donald.
- 9:04Turnip seed Donald made a left on Route 41 and as he crossed
- 9:09the center line, Dean, who was traveling around 85 mph, tried
- 9:14to avoid him. However, despite his best
- 9:17efforts, the two vehicles collided head on the Ford Coupe
- 9:22upon the collision, slid 39 feet down Route 466 and the westbound
- 9:28lane. Dean bore the brunt of the
- 9:30collision but stayed within the car.
- 9:33Uttaraj, however, was thrown from the spider and was laying
- 9:37on the shoulder multiple feet away from the scene.
- 9:40Upon the arrival of emergency personnel with little bastard
- 9:44completely totaled, they would have to pry James from the
- 9:47mangled vehicle using a crowbar. An unconscious and dying James
- 9:52Dean was then placed into the ambulance along with a heavily
- 9:56injured roof. The closest hospital was 30
- 10:00miles away. And as the ambulance rushed
- 10:03towards Paso Robles War Memorial Hospital, they too, as if they
- 10:08had been stricken with the worst luck imaginable, would also be
- 10:12involved in a car accident. Despite the horrible
- 10:15circumstances surrounding the initial accident, the ambulance
- 10:19did eventually make its way to the hospital roughly 45 minutes
- 10:23later, and although it would take months of recovery, Rolf
- 10:27would live but despite the emergency crews best efforts.
- 10:31Dean, however, would be pronounced dead on arrival at
- 10:356:20 PM His final cause of death upon autopsy, would be
- 10:40determined to be a broken neck and internal hemorrhaging as a
- 10:44result of the crash. He also had sustained multiple
- 10:48broken bones, including his legs, arms, and jaw, as well as
- 10:53multiple severe external lacerations.
- 10:57Donald Turnipseed, however. Despite his vehicle also being
- 11:01totaled, walked away with barely a scratch after his death.
- 11:06James Dean would be nominated for two Academy Awards in 1956
- 11:11and 1957 for his roles in East of Eden and Giant.
- 11:17He would also become the first actor to post humanistly win an
- 11:20Academy Award for one in 1956, seemingly being cut down in his
- 11:26prime at the young age of 24. Dean's death was an
- 11:30unprecedented tragedy, but the story of Little Bastard, despite
- 11:35being crumpled in the crash, would be far from over.
- 11:39A man by the name of George Bears purchased the wrecked
- 11:42Porsche remnants for $2500 later that year, likely with the
- 11:47intent to host some sort of an exhibit with it and to sell
- 11:50tickets, but after he purchased it while transporting the
- 11:55remains upon arriving at his shop.
- 11:58The car slipped off the trailer and broke the leg of his
- 12:01mechanic once it was secured in one of the shops garages.
- 12:06In approximately 1 month's time, while Bears was arranging for
- 12:10the first exhibit to open the garage housing, the car
- 12:14mysteriously caught fire and burned to the ground.
- 12:18Even more mysterious, upon surveying the damage, the
- 12:23Porsche had sustained no damage from the fire itself.
- 12:28Bears would eventually arrange for a second exhibit, which was
- 12:32held at a local high school in conjunction with the California
- 12:35Highway Patrol. But this showing, too, was
- 12:38unexpectedly cut short. When the car was surrounded by
- 12:42onlookers and students, it suddenly fell off of its display
- 12:47and broke a young student's hip. Getting an eerie sense that
- 12:51something was off with this car, Bears then began to sell its
- 12:55parts. He would sell the engine to a
- 12:58man named Troy McHenry and the drivetrain to William Eskrid.
- 13:04The two used parts to build cars of their own and had even once
- 13:08raced one another and both would experience horrendous accidents.
- 13:13During a street race, Troy would lose control of his vehicle,
- 13:18veer off the street and slammed directly into a tree.
- 13:22The impact Troy's tragedy, William, who was casually
- 13:33driving his vehicle containing the drivetrain of Little
- 13:36Bastard, suddenly had his wheels lock up for no reason, and upon
- 13:42turning while experiencing this, the car began to roll, leaving
- 13:48him critically injured in the crash.
- 13:50He, however, despite his injuries, would live.
- 13:55While parting out what was left of the car, bears would also
- 13:58sell two of the Porsches tires, which had been untouched since
- 14:02the accident that claimed Dean's life.
- 14:05After selling the tires, he also installed them on the customer's
- 14:09vehicle at his shop. However, upon driving home, both
- 14:14of them not one or the other, but both simultaneously
- 14:20exploded, causing the driver to lose control.
- 14:24Drive off the road, they would fortunately regain control of
- 14:28their vehicle and despite being shaken up or unharmed, George
- 14:33Barris, after selling what parts he could, will continue trying
- 14:37to arrange exhibits for the remnants of the car to be shown.
- 14:41The 3rd and final exhibit that was set to happen was going to
- 14:46be held by the Los Angeles chapter of the National Safety
- 14:49Council as a traveling display. However, the truck driver who
- 14:54was hired to transport Little Bastard to the exhibit on a
- 14:57flatbed truck, a man named George Barcas, would be involved
- 15:02in an accident. While heading there.
- 15:05He would be ejected from his vehicle and would land to the
- 15:08side of the flatbed, and whether it was a failure of securing the
- 15:12remnants or something more sinister, he would be crushed
- 15:17and killed when the Porsche rolled off the flatbed and onto
- 15:21him. There would be other mishaps as
- 15:23the twisted Porsche would be loaned out to various exhibits
- 15:27across the country and the years to come.
- 15:29But when it was on loan to a safety exhibit Miami, FL in
- 15:331960, following the conclusion of the exhibit as it was being
- 15:38hauled back to Los Angeles, the truck that was carrying what was
- 15:42left of the vehicle would once again be involved in a fatal
- 15:45crash, killing the driver. But remained of the Porsche
- 15:49known as Little Bastard, vanished from the scene that day
- 15:53and to this day, all these years later, it has never been seen
- 15:57again, nor has any of its parts, despite collectors and
- 16:02enthusiasts alike willing to put up big money for even a genuine
- 16:06scrap of its remains. But before we speculate on what
- 16:10could have happened to it, I would first like to give my take
- 16:13on the bizarre activity that surrounds this now infamous
- 16:16legend to me. If there was ever something that
- 16:20could be considered cursed, this onceprized Porsche of James Dean
- 16:24very much fits the bill, given all that we've learned.
- 16:28But just why would it have been cursed and how?
- 16:31These are questions that I've pondered while researching this
- 16:34topic. There of course doesn't seem to
- 16:37be a proper answer, or even a real speculated one that would
- 16:41genuinely make sense that I could find.
- 16:43There doesn't seem to be any crazy occult ties to anyone he
- 16:46was involved with. The one theory that I did come
- 16:49across could possibly explain why, but of course this is just
- 16:54a theory. I don't want people getting mad
- 16:56at me. James Dean decides being an
- 16:59acclaimed actor by the young age of 24 was most definitely a
- 17:03heartthrob with the ladies. It's been rumored that among his
- 17:06various affairs with rich and powerful women, he also had
- 17:10multiple escapades per week. The theory I came across was
- 17:14this. Could it have been possible?
- 17:17That some starcrossed lover or fling of Deans could have placed
- 17:21a curse on him. Curses, of course, like anything
- 17:24paranormal in nature, are subject to a sense of belief in
- 17:28these kinds of things. Or so most think.
- 17:31Perhaps Dean broke the heart of the wrong person, with Dean
- 17:35hitting the big time and also taking up car racing in between
- 17:39films, or the filming of those films, perhaps one of his
- 17:42girlfriends rather jealous or heartbroken, or both.
- 17:47Placed a curse of sorts on him, either on him or something to do
- 17:51with his newfound love for Motorsports.
- 17:55How this would have exactly imprinted specifically upon the
- 17:58newly purchased Porsche of 1955 goes far beyond my expertise,
- 18:04but it is the only explanation I could find that would remotely
- 18:07make sense aside from a horrible string of unfortunate
- 18:11coincidences. And strangely enough, the man
- 18:15who hit Dean, having the name of Donald turn up Seed.
- 18:19Turn up Seed, in my opinion, is all too close to turn up speed.
- 18:24It's kind of weird, don't you think?
- 18:26With all of the darkness surrounding this car, Rolf had a
- 18:30very tragic ending as well. Upon his postrec recovery, he
- 18:35began to receive horrible letters from James Dean's fans
- 18:39blaming him for the actor's death.
- 18:42This eventually led to a terrible drinking problem, as he
- 18:45felt responsible for what had happened.
- 18:47He would eventually move back to Germany, where he experienced
- 18:51many lows, including multiple divorces and His final marriage,
- 18:56however, seemed to be at the lowest point in his life, having
- 19:00been depressed for years, coupled with other psychological
- 19:04problems stemming from the guilt of the accident with too much
- 19:07alcohol in his system in 1969. Rolf attempted to end his fourth
- 19:13wife. He stabbed her 14 times with a
- 19:15kitchen knife while she slept. Afterwards, he attempted to take
- 19:21his own but failed. He was however arrested and
- 19:26would spend a lengthy term in a mental institution instead of
- 19:29prison. This would also be his last and
- 19:33final divorce. He would, for a short time,
- 19:36bounce back as both a Porsche mechanic.
- 19:39And would also be a racer himself.
- 19:41Once again, but again as well, he succumbed to psychological
- 19:45issues, falling back on hard times.
- 19:49In July of 1981, he signed a contract for 20,000 Deutsche
- 19:54marks for a feature in a TV show discussing the accident and the
- 19:58death of James Dean. As he contemplated what he was
- 20:02going to discuss, he would become heavily intoxicated and
- 20:06later that night. He would crash his Honda Civic
- 20:09into the wall of a residence and coupe Fritzel.
- 20:13Ironically, like James, he too had to be cut from the wreck.
- 20:18It would be pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
- 20:22Now, where exactly could the remains of the Porsche have
- 20:26gone? The most likely explanation, in
- 20:28my opinion, had to have been bystanders who witnessed the
- 20:32crash, and my guess is that perhaps they didn't know exactly
- 20:36what they had. But rather saw dollar signs.
- 20:40This could perhaps explain why it didn't show back up.
- 20:43Perhaps people who owned the parts and or the vehicles with
- 20:46the parts didn't know what they indeed possessed.
- 20:50But what also makes this strange is that they've never shown back
- 20:54up at all. There is one transaxle that was
- 20:58rumored to be from James Dean's car that was found in a wooden
- 21:01box in rural Massachusetts, but from what I could find.
- 21:06It has yet to be confirmed as genuine.
- 21:09It was either that people didn't know what they had, or something
- 21:12terrible happened to them as well.
- 21:15And what remains they did possess or parts that they had
- 21:18put in their cars could have ended up scrapped somewhere
- 21:22never to be seen again. Although I don't want to
- 21:25persuade you one way or another with all the strange, dark and
- 21:29terrible events that surround the Porsche 550 Spider known as
- 21:34James Dean's Little Bastard. One certainly has to consider
- 21:38that there is something otherworldly or cursed
- 21:41surrounding this case, but is it a curse?
- 21:44Is it something evil? Or is it just a horrible string
- 21:47of coincidences? Let me know down in the comments
- 21:51below. Either way, this is 1 car I have
- 21:54absolutely no desire to see, let alone ride in one that contains
- 21:58any piece of it. Thank you guys so much for
