- 0:39Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt.
- 0:42Penknife the Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:45I am here with the wonderful superlative.
- 0:48Exceptional, brilliant, fabulous, terrific.
- 0:52He's got his head in his hands, Joe Ford.
- 0:56Hello, thank you very much. I I I I can't say enough good
- 1:02things about you Joe and as we talked about my podcast with
- 1:06Steve earlier but it was your hamster podcast that got me into
- 1:12podcasting in the first place it was with a very first one I ever
- 1:15did. So, Yes, I'll pop your cherry,
- 1:18didn't I? Oh, you had to do, you had to go
- 1:22there. You was a virgin until you
- 1:24started out with me. Chie was, I know there's many a
- 1:29man and so why I've done this with now.
- 1:30So, so sorry. Jackson, here I am trying to be
- 1:37nice and grateful and say good thing, and you lower the tone,
- 1:41why are you bothering like, why do I bother?
- 1:44I I'm here with that complete Arts Joe Ford just for anyone
- 1:51who might be interested, it is a complete ass, all right?
- 1:56That is bad. Should we just Get on with the
- 1:57evil of the Daleks. So
- 2:16we've covered the breadth and depth of ravalox.
- 2:19We've been having a bit of a saranga conundrum.
- 2:23We Face the power of the Daleks and we've taken on the dollar.
- 2:27Master plan and now we are. We Believe of the Daleks old.
- 2:36Sure. That's the first time I've lost
- 2:37you on this coal. I didn't hear that.
- 2:40Oh, you froze up a bit? And I okay, well, hopefully
- 2:44we're back in sync now. So I could you once again,
- 2:47repeat, what we are now doing, we are now doing the evil of the
- 2:50Daleks episode episode 3, and where did we leave off in
- 2:57episode 2? Well, the Daleks want the doctor
- 3:01to tell Jamie to do something that will be a test apparently
- 3:06for the human factor. Yeah, we need to get into that
- 3:10later on, all right. Yeah.
- 3:12Oh, yeah, we do. Yeah, plenty of opportunities.
- 3:16Well, it's very episode 3 of 7. So Tent for.
- 3:21I remember for a member of all that running around and chasing
- 3:25with kemmel, what I remember episode 3, it's all Wallace.
- 3:28Let's go in and watch it, shall we?
- 3:30Let's go in and watch it. You want to count us in?
- 3:33I will do you say in five, four, three, two, one off.
- 3:39We owe all this is the one with the argument, isn't it?
- 3:43Yes. And you know what?
- 3:46It reminds me of. It reminds me very much of the
- 3:49Steve and Doctor argument in the massacre.
- 3:53Mmm. Yeah, it certainly if you're so
- 3:55careless with your experiments, Yeah.
- 3:59It's a very similar kind of kind of argument and, you know, Jamie
- 4:05really properly standing up the doctor for the first time I
- 4:08think so. Are you pleased?
- 4:10They never went there again. yeah, I think I think there is
- 4:16again, you know, with Doctor Who being the The vast Arena that it
- 4:22is to play and I think there is space for dr.
- 4:24Companion arguments. But I'm glad they didn't make a
- 4:28big thing of it. I mean, obviously, the, the, the
- 4:32classic example is Series 22 with the doctor and Perry
- 4:36constantly bickering with each other.
- 4:38And that, you know, as I think I said on the mysterious planet
- 4:41commentary if that keeps happening.
- 4:43You wonder why they keep traveling.
- 4:45Yeah, you know, I mean, I know in this instance it's a bit
- 4:48different because the doctors got know, control over the
- 4:50Tardis or anything like that, can't drop them off anywhere,
- 4:53but Poison kind of wonder about it but multiple situation, isn't
- 4:58it? Because he's basically said that
- 5:00I said you'll all be killed if you don't do this.
- 5:03So he's trying to save Jamie's life.
- 5:05Yeah, absolutely. No.
- 5:06Here is Arthur Terrell the character who Really doesn't
- 5:10bring much to the proceedings. No purpose whatsoever.
- 5:15Not really no part from padding, it out to seven episodes.
- 5:19Arthur and Ruth are engaged to be married.
- 5:22Yeah, yes. That is correct.
- 5:25Okay, and Ruth is Max devil's daughter.
- 5:28Yes. But there's no need for his
- 5:32daughter to be in this. In plot terms.
- 5:34He said there's a need for Victoria to be in this to give a
- 5:37motive to Edward water-filled. Yeah, no Ruth and Terrell,
- 5:43really don't have much Much. Need to be there, especially
- 5:49this whole subplot of Terrell being under some kind of
- 5:51control. I'm going to get as fabulous
- 5:54moments of the Daleks going obey those pics but you know, that
- 6:01being said again, it's all done. So.
- 6:03Well when you first watch it, we know I you know, we're coming to
- 6:08this having seen heard listen to read watched the story multiple
- 6:14times to the point where I'm pretty confident if you sat me
- 6:19down in front of a computer and told me to bash out the script,
- 6:22I could probably do it. I'm not going to hold you to
- 6:25that but you know, I am very familiar with the story.
- 6:33And I think that one of the things that not just Doctor Who
- 6:37fans any fan when you, when you are so familiar with the
- 6:40content, you watched it over and over again.
- 6:43It's easy to forget the experience of watching it for
- 6:46the first time. Yes.
- 6:48And being carried along with the story, then you go back and
- 6:51watch it again. And you start thinking, hang on.
- 6:53Now, I know what's coming. What does this have to do with
- 6:56anything else? Like with whole that they know,
- 6:58the whole episode 1, and the beginning of episode 2?
- 7:00What is all that stuff in 1960? Six have to do with what comes
- 7:04afterwards. Nothing.
- 7:06It's just an elaborate trap to get the doctor to where he needs
- 7:09to be for the actual story to take place.
- 7:14But first time I watch this though, I was just so impressed
- 7:17with the scale with the acting the score, like other thing.
- 7:21I was asking any of those questions, it's the repeat
- 7:24viewings, where I've started. I'm picking it.
- 7:26And going, you know, that's don't make a lot of sense.
- 7:29Yeah, no I agree and By the same token.
- 7:34Sometimes I could watch a story at the first time around and
- 7:36think what? The bloody hell is this?
- 7:38I'm watching a load of rubbish and then on reviewing, it
- 7:41actually think actually thinking about it.
- 7:45Reconsidering now I know what's coming, I can I've been able to
- 7:49reappraise things like, you know, I when I watched The
- 7:56stolen Earth and Journey's End the first time round.
- 7:59I thought it was terrible. Really?
- 8:03That was like, the Zenith for me.
- 8:05Ya know, I thought there was all sorts of any especially at the
- 8:08end where it's all undone by a Convenient Bank of controls
- 8:11that, Donna Falls against the Press, has loads of buttons that
- 8:15Fixes everything basically and I thought that was that was awful.
- 8:20But now knowing what's coming and yeah, that is still a
- 8:24terrible deus ex machina ending but knowing what's coming.
- 8:30I really love that story. It's one of my comfort stories.
- 8:34If I've got a couple of hours and I just want to lose myself
- 8:37in something that's going to carry me along, I'll watch that
- 8:39story and you know, talk is is a big sort of Epic story like this
- 8:45isn't. With a massive cost style over
- 8:47substance. Oh, very much style over
- 8:50substance. There was another old Caster
- 8:52common, which one it was. That said, basically, it's just
- 8:55constant bait-and-switch, they introduced things only to
- 8:58discard them later because they don't need them.
- 9:02So exciting. Jason, but it was, it was
- 9:04exciting enough, but I was very deflated by the end of it.
- 9:10So here we have camel, Max Duvall is bringing camel Maxford
- 9:17only had two houses because he says he's brought camel
- 9:20specially from London. He works in his house, but if
- 9:22they're already in his house, this is his house, some miles
- 9:24from Canterbury. So, yeah, that's a bit on his
- 9:29mind is undeveloped, will you settle an argument for me, then
- 9:34Please, I just before I ask this question, remember you are on
- 9:37this particular podcast, all right, but I swear that in the
- 9:43BFI, when this character was unveiled with those gorgeous
- 9:47muscles, beautiful cartoon character there that there was a
- 9:52collective gasp amongst the primarily homosexual audience of
- 9:56the BFI screening. Well, Marva off.
- 9:59That's a complete lie actually. It was just in my head.
- 10:07I think I might have done something bellush mothers who
- 10:09that character but you know you know I cannot remember it again,
- 10:15another Doctor Who story. Is it sunny cold enough?
- 10:19Sunny Cal Dino's is in several but this is the only one you
- 10:22actually see his face. I'll boys taking this gyro my
- 10:25word. I got because everything else he
- 10:27was basically, it was nice Warrior.
- 10:30I'll have you seen him on the documentaries?
- 10:32When he's talking about that. Yes.
- 10:34Yes, it's fucking hilarious because always brilliant.
- 10:37He's not gonna play at ice Warrior, the thick brought the
- 10:40costume. And he went oh my God, my Lord.
- 10:48Did he continue to play them into the Peloton stories?
- 10:50Because he knows as well. He did.
- 10:53Yeah, he was in all of them. So he was camel here.
- 10:56He was to Iraq in the ice Warriors.
- 10:58Unnamed ice warrior in the seeds of death because they didn't get
- 11:01any names. He was sword in cursor, Peloton
- 11:04and scale in Monster Peloton so they said to know in the dark.
- 11:08He was a really popular guy to have around and it you can tell
- 11:12what it was. I just seems very colorful and
- 11:14very Charming. Oh yeah, he's got quite quite a
- 11:17personality. Said when I always enjoy
- 11:19watching him on the documentaries.
- 11:24Yeah, I mean all of this this whole scene is just let's show
- 11:28how strong this bloke. This bloke is for no reason.
- 11:31They could've just told that they've got some time to pad
- 11:34out. So as a little bit suspect, we
- 11:37know he's going up against Jamie.
- 11:39Yeah, so basically the doctor and Max the ball have their
- 11:43Champions they're going to be pitted against each other.
- 11:48For some unknown reason. We don't know yet.
- 11:49Do we? Why?
- 11:53No, I would never, I think the doctor very quickly, I don't
- 11:57know, is whilst they're sort of creeping about the house.
- 12:02You get those filled inserts. The doctor saying about the
- 12:05human factor. Yeah, you do explain a it's
- 12:09going long. Yeah, you do.
- 12:11Yes. So you could, you know, in
- 12:16contrast, in contrast to power of the Daleks, I had to think a
- 12:21word was wasted in that. I don't think I seen was wasted.
- 12:26no, I think power of the Daleks is a master class in building
- 12:31up, the tension, and building up all the characters and Yeah, I
- 12:38think it was I think it was I it's still one of the best
- 12:41Doctor. Who stories ever?
- 12:42I think power of The Darlings is it has to not only does it have
- 12:46to build this world of the Daleks in it.
- 12:48Infiltrating it building up their strength until the final
- 12:52Massacre, the end but it also has to make us believe that this
- 12:55bloke is the doctor So maybe this is the most indulgent
- 13:01Doctor Who story ever. But, yeah, with style.
- 13:05We're going to show what the BBC can do it with a period drama.
- 13:09We're going to bring in these fabulous character actors Yep.
- 13:13And now we're going to have a house with booby traps all over
- 13:15it. Amazing.
- 13:17That all this feels a bit like an episode of nightmare to me
- 13:20now, you know, Carlos coming down.
- 13:24Go left, go left side, step to the right Jason.
- 13:29Now, there's a kids show to remember, Oh yeah, nightmare was
- 13:34superb. Absolutely superb.
- 13:37So yeah this is the booby trap. Sure get weird because they want
- 13:42to test Jamie and yet every trap, I mean you almost dies
- 13:45before you can get started later on, you know, so, lethal blades
- 13:50and Macy's, swing out from the walls, probably isn't the best
- 13:52kind of How old are you saying now, you want to introduce the
- 13:57human factor into a race of Daleks?
- 13:59Because there's something in humans that always makes them
- 14:03defeat Darlings. I don't know if I buy that all
- 14:07over. No.
- 14:08Well, I remember when, because I'm in, for a long time, back in
- 14:14the 90s, these weren't in the original target, novelisation
- 14:17range. They were like the last ones to
- 14:19because it sort of bulky, bulky books.
- 14:21When they, they were quite, and they were much bigger than the
- 14:23rest of them, because they were intended to their page, count
- 14:26with sit, alongside the new adventures, and the missing
- 14:29Adventures that were coming out around the time and John peel
- 14:33novelized this and power of the dollar.
- 14:35Alex a brilliantly, I think. But one of the things I remember
- 14:38from it, is that sequence where the Dalek says, yeah, the
- 14:41conquest of humanity eluded us. And we have to know why.
- 14:44And the doctor doesn't buy that and he thinks this Dalek is
- 14:46unusually chatty. Okay.
- 14:49So the idea that the doctor is suspicious about what's going on
- 14:52is sewn, very early on and very clearly in the novelization.
- 14:57Not so much in the episodes as transmitted now.
- 15:01Not all, I don't think Paul, Troutman can't do that.
- 15:05That's all Sly. I'm not buying this.
- 15:10He can and I know for all we know he did in with his face,
- 15:13basically, in an episode where we may find.
- 15:16If we ever get it back, we might find that there's a reaction
- 15:19shot that shows that he's not entirely convinced.
- 15:21But what the hell does that line?
- 15:23Mean that Dale just said, you've traveled too much through time,
- 15:27you're more than human. Yeah.
- 15:31Mysterious. Isn't it very mysteriously?
- 15:34This is pre, you know, everything being spell out for
- 15:37us about the dock. It is.
- 15:39And the Daleks at this point, don't know what he is.
- 15:44How long are pissy stage Jason, you know, I like they're being
- 15:48an obscure pass for the doctor with just tantalizing little
- 15:53hints. Yeah, I like that as well.
- 15:58I don't think we needed to ever find out as much as we did.
- 16:02Although it you know has provided fuel for future
- 16:04episodes. Bonnie, can you imagine if
- 16:08Twitter was a thing in 1969, when the war games came on?
- 16:12Well, not just that line, you're more than human man.
- 16:15Twitter will be on fire. What the hell does that mean?
- 16:19And then Along Comes the war games?
- 16:20And why are we being told about the doctors people?
- 16:22We don't need to know this, we don't need to have this
- 16:24operation fandom split into two. Those are think he's an alien
- 16:36and knows that. Think he's a human, yeah.
- 16:42But it is, it is quite astonishing in a way though that
- 16:45we had six seasons and that many episodes.
- 16:50And we really didn't find out anything at all, but it wouldn't
- 16:54be long time. And yet, you totally trust the
- 16:56character, you know. Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:00And yeah, I mean, sick, six seasons now doesn't sound much,
- 17:03but one of the things that Is amazing.
- 17:07Verticals in the 60s Doctor Who was on more than it was off.
- 17:11Are you kidding me to Caesar's? Don't sound a lot these days.
- 17:13You're lucky if you get a second, you know, and you know
- 17:17six seasons of Doctor Who in the 1960s was equivalent to the
- 17:22whole of the rest of the 70s era.
- 17:24Yeah. In terms of episode count.
- 17:26Yeah. So yeah I think most of the
- 17:30stories were longer but Yeah, it's a 1968 Doctor Who was on 48
- 17:37out of 52 weeks. Astonishing to think that isn't
- 17:41it? Because you had the first, you
- 17:43had the last the end of Series 5, then you had the repeat of
- 17:47the evil of the Daleks and then you had the beginning of Series
- 17:506 and I was only like three weeks between them.
- 17:53So I think know, you know, when sort of Ian Levine has a sort of
- 18:01rage on about how few episodes, there's going to be, you know,
- 18:05in the the shooting at waft season is coming up and Miss Lee
- 18:11is idiosyncratic fella, but he remembers this.
- 18:16Doesn't he remembers when Doctor Who was on for all but four or
- 18:20five weeks of the Year. This is, I think, you know,
- 18:24yeah, I mean, what a time to be be doing it, but Yeah.
- 18:31But I mean it does amaze me though when people come up with
- 18:33those things where they say you know, only episode of the BBC is
- 18:37trying to kill Doctor. Who at the BBC doesn't have to
- 18:40try and kill Doctor Who they make Doctor?
- 18:42Who if they want to kill it they will just stop making it.
- 18:45You know, they're not trying to kill it by giving it fewer
- 18:48episodes. If they want it killed, it will
- 18:50be killed because they don't actually have to make it.
- 18:53No one is holding a knife to their throat.
- 18:54Saying make this, you know, since you seem to be suggesting
- 18:57that certain elements of fandom can be melodramatic.
- 18:59Tick. I am I suggesting melodrama in
- 19:05fandom oh, you wound me. Sir, you wound me.
- 19:10The scary thing is we've all been guilty of it at some point.
- 19:13It was, but there was one particular episode of Moffat who
- 19:15where I said this is as close as I've come to divorcing myself
- 19:21from Doctor Who also, I look back at that review now on my
- 19:24own show. Get over yourself, they don't
- 19:27care if you're watching or not. Yeah, I've had my head, my Angry
- 19:32face, I think I'm done with it. I'm just enjoying what I have.
- 19:34But, yeah, I had, I had a moment when episode where I remember
- 19:38putting up on a message board that it's like, you know, I'm
- 19:40not really bothered about watching the series anymore, but
- 19:43I hope other people are enjoying it, and that's good.
- 19:45But for me, no, obviously kill the Moon.
- 19:48Yes, I know it was, it was killed the Moon.
- 19:52Yes, there's some people would think that talking about kill
- 19:56the moon, you know, during this wonderful sequence between the
- 19:59doctor and Jamie with be in bad taste.
- 20:01East. Well, yes, so let's talk about
- 20:06the doctor and Jamie because they've just had their blazing
- 20:10Rao and are wasn't it great? It really, it feels like, it's
- 20:15kind of over it does. And, you know, and this is You
- 20:20know, Jamie has been very much the innocent.
- 20:25Person from the past who's kind of just bewildered by
- 20:29everything. And follows the doctor because,
- 20:33you know, he trusts the doctor. The doctor is the only one who
- 20:35can get him out of these situations is that, you know, I
- 20:37think was it in, in the underwater Menace where he was,
- 20:41what have I got myself into here?
- 20:42You know, that can't be the Moon, the Moon is way up in the
- 20:45sky and all that. Lots of people have said, he
- 20:50wakes up a different person after be unconscious for an
- 20:52episode of whom Baseline. That's a pretty fair assessment.
- 20:56But Yeah. Here he's just standing up to
- 21:00the doctor and said, nope! Nope, that's it.
- 21:02I'm done. Yeah, you keep telling the other
- 21:08Charlotte's haven't seen one somebody's been murdered.
- 21:10The Tardis has been stolen your cooperating with them what's
- 21:12going on and he's just really having to go and it's brilliant.
- 21:15It's as just fantastic. The truth is like he is a
- 21:18character out of time. A lot of weird shit has gone
- 21:21down. I can understand why he is so
- 21:25perturbed. Hmm, yeah, definitely.
- 21:29And yet in the same breath, we've already said the doctors
- 21:31in a bind because he's trying to save his lat and everybody else
- 21:34is so, He's kind of Rome in that second.
- 21:38Yeah, no absolutely. this sequence of Terrell and Toby is
- 21:45One that I always look at oddly, because B of it were missing
- 21:49from the audiobook. There's a big jump in the
- 21:53dialogue. But still here we go.
- 21:58Toby grits grab some money and some keys and Go sir, goes to
- 22:01rob the house. In this completely, irrelevant
- 22:06subplot. You know, please, it is
- 22:10irrelevant and yet it is woven in quite nicely.
- 22:14Because Toby scream when he gets exterminated, is what Freaks
- 22:19out. Molly and tells Jake gets Jamie
- 22:21to send her back to her room and stop it.
- 22:24And the discovery of his body is the first unraveling of the
- 22:30relationship between Max food and water filled.
- 22:32And the point where we realize that Max table is probably not
- 22:35as bothered by this as he should be.
- 22:39Yeah. So it has kind of a long-winded
- 22:42way to reach those kids. Yeah, but I think it's quite
- 22:46effective you ever want down lit.
- 22:48Randall said about episode 2, not being atmospheric.
- 22:51I don't think you could say that all about episode 3.
- 22:53You've got all these scenes sort of by candle light.
- 22:57You know, you had a lovely exterior shot.
- 22:59House. Lit up a party.
- 23:01Yeah, no definitely. definitely skipping back very quickly to
- 23:07the argument between the doctor and Jamie, I don't mean this as
- 23:11an insole But I do think it's one of the few times where
- 23:17Fraser hires has to properly Act.
- 23:22Because I think a lot of the time he gets by on a lot of
- 23:26charm. Yeah, I mean he's He's not often
- 23:34given much to do, other than be. The fun part the yeah, the
- 23:42muscle. Most, and even when he's given
- 23:47lots to do like in the dominators, for example, that's
- 23:50not stretching his range as an actor.
- 23:53There's a lot there's a lovely bit in fear from the deep, where
- 23:57Victoria is trying to talk to him about, she trying to tell
- 24:01him she wants to go and and he's just like, yeah, why always
- 24:05complaining about stuff like that?
- 24:07And that's another really well Act.
- 24:08As soon as well, but they are very rare, they are.
- 24:13I mean, the I particularly think that he does really well on the
- 24:18final scene, he has with Victoria where they're
- 24:21discussing Hi departure at the end of episode six and I think
- 24:27he does really really well with that.
- 24:28So it's good that you get these scenes every so often to
- 24:31remember that, actually this coin is a really good actor,
- 24:33which is, you know, they didn't just pluck him out because he
- 24:37looked pretty in the Highlanders, you know, the
- 24:38actually is a good actor but like That's it.
- 24:42I don't denigrate or classic Doctor Who it wasn't really an
- 24:46acting show in the way that it kind of is in the new series,
- 24:50where you have to display this incredible range of emotions.
- 24:57No I think well basically if you can cry you'll right in the foot
- 25:00in the new series, these days will say as a lot of the jokes
- 25:04disdain, you know. I just think they over egg is
- 25:09sometimes but like I think in the classic series it was more
- 25:13like, you know, bring your personality, you'd be care of
- 25:16the stories, bring your personality, make it washable.
- 25:20Yeah. I mean they said you know a few
- 25:22of them. The doctors come along the
- 25:25actors who are playing doctor come along and they say what you
- 25:28want me to do and they said what do you want to do?
- 25:31You know, I don't think Tom Baker was given a brief how to
- 25:35be the doctor this state instead of the time Warrior because I
- 25:39was listening to the commentary the other day.
- 25:40She goes I walked in and I didn't get a note and this is
- 25:44the first time I was playing this character and no one gave
- 25:46me a know like I was just left to just play it.
- 25:50And brilliantly. She did it to yes.
- 25:53But then somebody discovered in the spring in their acting chops
- 25:57to what probably could have been quite a fabulous part.
- 26:00Yeah definitely. So they're Jamie has nearly been
- 26:03killed before he even started on his quest by those weird spikes
- 26:07that fell out. Other, why are all of these
- 26:11traps in? What are they hearing this
- 26:13house? It does make you wonder about
- 26:18Max table, just the tab, doesn't it?
- 26:21It's like there's, there's, there's burglar alarms and, you
- 26:24know, protection and there's things that will kill anyone who
- 26:28walks through, very, very odd. Nope, here we go.
- 26:32Jamie has encountered car, and the music in this scene, where
- 26:37he's introduced his great Roi eyes, it sort of builds, doesn't
- 26:41it? Builds and builds and builds?
- 26:43It does. And one thing I will say that
- 26:45there, I think the animation got a little bit wrong on that
- 26:49Cliffhanger. Was that final shot of camel
- 26:51advancing with his arms up? It's like that.
- 26:54Did it? Was he always that was a bit.
- 26:55Yeah. A big Angry Eyes, but in the
- 26:57Clinton this Telly snaps, it's just the face and it's just the
- 27:00confrontation. So actually going at whole, you
- 27:02know, getting him. It's just now you didn't need
- 27:05that. You didn't need that. but but
- 27:09yeah, that's probably the The best kit hanger of the cereal so
- 27:13far, because at least it makes sense.
- 27:15It does. And the entire episode has been
- 27:18building to the moment where those two characters me, yes,
- 27:22erratically, it makes sense as well.
- 27:24It does, and it's one of those. One of those Cliffhangers that
- 27:29isn't immediately rectified the next episode.
- 27:31It's not a little moment of peril.
- 27:33This is the B, this is the thing that basically leads us into
- 27:36episode 4 and everything that happens from this point onwards,
- 27:41so, it's a It's a very important Cliffhanger.
- 27:46I think I may have said similar on my all my Cliffhangers
- 27:49thread. If anyone's watching on Twitter,
- 27:50my excuse me, I read your Cliffhanger Fred every bloody
- 27:54day. All right, except today, because
- 27:57I haven't done it because I'm doing this, no put your tie.
- 28:01Why? Because all the time, I disagree
- 28:02of you terribly, I was he talking about what?
- 28:06That's a great clue, Fang. Well, feel free to say so, but I
- 28:10love those. It is where we disagree, you
- 28:21know? Yeah.
- 28:24I think disagreement is perfectly healthy but you can do
- 28:27it in different ways. I admire your perseverance of
- 28:30that as well. That's a hell of a task.
- 28:33Yeah, I thought when he, when I started it, I thought this is
- 28:35probably insane, but let's see what happens.
- 28:38Now is great and I also bloody loves to hug our plug,
- 28:40everything you do now, I love your other actors Doctor, Who
- 28:46actors that have been in other shows.
- 28:48I love those syringes. Oh yeah.
- 28:50Those are getting. Okay, that was amazing for me
- 28:54because I put those up just because I found it interesting.
- 28:58And I'd get two or three likes, one or two comments, maybe on a
- 29:02few of the posts so on and so forth.
- 29:06And it's like well you know I'm enjoying it and some people are
- 29:09interacting with it. Let's carry on.
- 29:13And then I put up the survey of which one should I do next?
- 29:16And I got 100 responses. I've never had that much
- 29:19engagement on a single one of those tweets.
- 29:21But you know, 100 people decided to tell me what they wanted to
- 29:24see next. Which is why I did not list,
- 29:27which is why did the space 1999 one?
- 29:30That was the winner of that pole.
- 29:33I thought you the, you either do one, hundreds gestures.
- 29:37Do only put up for suggestions but I got 100 votes.
- 29:40Oh, okay. Oscars are over. 400 votes.
- 29:43I thought you were saying you asked for people to suggest
- 29:47series to do know, I put up a poll of for other series that I
- 29:50could do. And yeah, 100 people voted on
- 29:53it. I Weller don't get too involved
- 29:57in numbers. So right about the numbers it's
- 29:59about the thumb. Oh, absolutely.
- 30:01That's why I do it because it's good fun.
- 30:03I mean I did why, you know, I did the Doctor Who actors in The
- 30:06spin-offs bread, please. So you that Cliffhanger one for,
- 30:10you know, because I do read every single one, I will
- 30:13continue with it. I think I got to wherever I got
- 30:16to on The Deadly Assassin on I, so yeah.
- 30:20Yeah, he will. It was are surprised have a nice
- 30:22hedge Cliff. Cliff hangers.
- 30:24No 5 and 10. Are you serious?
- 30:27Oh some of them just don't work for me.
- 30:30But of course the Cliffhanger thread is going to accelerate
- 30:32rapidly because The seasons when you get to the end of the 80s or
- 30:37suddenly hard in length. And then, in the new series,
- 30:39there aren't as many to deal with.
- 30:40So it's going to be and the 60s as we said with all those
- 30:44episodes in the 60s and the fact that they put Cliffhangers
- 30:46between stories as well, that was a lot going on and then it's
- 30:51rapidly diminishing as you go further into the into the series
- 30:55lifetime, but not far off. Well Jason, I do you have any
- 31:00more questions from Twitter for this episode?
- 31:03Do I have any more questions from Twitter from this episode?
- 31:07Who else have we got to do? I'm just trying to see if
- 31:14there's any that specifically relevant to this episode that we
- 31:17haven't done yet. Why is Kevin all the hottest
- 31:21character in all of Doctor Who because the animators are horny.
- 31:26That's why Well, somebody did ask you if he should have had
- 31:30nipples in the animation but I can't find that tweet
- 31:32immediately. Oh okay.
- 31:37Andy Parkinson, Andy Parkinson has three questions.
- 31:41Okay. One where does evil rank in
- 31:44Dalek stories for you? How much?
- 31:49Ooh yeah. Hi definitely I couldn't tell I
- 31:53couldn't help you follow my exact position.
- 31:55Already couldn't place it over top five.
- 31:57He's got five certainly I think. Yeah.
- 32:00Does this story along with the other superb stories make season
- 32:04for troughton's best? I still other six will always be
- 32:09my favorite. It's the Jamie Zoe.
- 32:11I just love the dogs to Jamie and sorry regardless of how
- 32:15inconsistent no stories are. I still think it's got three of
- 32:18the best in there in mine, rubber Invasion and the war
- 32:22games. So see it's always been my
- 32:24favorite. I think six as well.
- 32:27I think the the trouble with season for that stops IT from
- 32:30being the best. For me is that it is it does
- 32:35take a while. I'll to find its feet and there
- 32:38are long as variable quality in the stories, season 5 is
- 32:42absolutely superb but incredibly formulaic.
- 32:46And I've also gone off poly an awful lot.
- 32:50Like she's stuck up sometimes and she's horrible to Kirsty at
- 32:53the Highlanders. Yeah she is a bit.
- 32:56Yeah. And I mean the Highlanders for
- 32:58one thing, you know he's Doctor Who and the Crooked solicitor.
- 33:03Yeah, basically. It's like we're going back to
- 33:06the Jacobite rebellion and 1745 and the doctrine Co arrived just
- 33:11as it's all finished. Yeah.
- 33:14After the drama, Just hang on. Shouldn't you be doing it into
- 33:18the build-up or something like that?
- 33:19But no, no, no, after it's all finished and then it's a story
- 33:23about I mean, that's for me, that's one of the reasons I
- 33:26think. That's one of the reasons why
- 33:27the historical is maybe fell out of favor because the last couple
- 33:32although they're good on their own merits, I think they don't
- 33:36stick in the mind because they don't visit specific historical
- 33:43characters and they don't quite It the brief almost of what they
- 33:50claim to be. So the Highlanders is basically,
- 33:55as I say, the story of the Crooked solicitor and the slave
- 33:57trade, And and then the Smugglers is about Pirates.
- 34:04Almost more than the smuggling, it said, they're both kind of
- 34:07fun, but forgettable fun, but forgettable, that's exactly what
- 34:11I thought. Meaning, they're great in.
- 34:14I'd love to get them back because I think they'd be
- 34:16re-evaluated if we got them back.
- 34:18Yeah, too. Right.
- 34:19But yeah, no. Season 6.
- 34:21Definitely is. My is my favorite Fountain
- 34:23season. Yeah.
- 34:24Jamie and Zoe is superb and it's got the Invasion, the war games.
- 34:29And yes, the dominators I The dominators and the, my brother
- 34:34and the mind robber. And question 3 from Andy is,
- 34:37does this story benefit from not being written by Terry Nation?
- 34:42Oh, yeah, this would be completely different if it was
- 34:44written by Terry Nation. I don't think it would have the
- 34:46richness of the characterization or the dialogue.
- 34:52It would be more sort of Escape capture you node and are stuff
- 34:57that we've had before. Yeah, I mean, Terry Nation
- 35:01understood the brief he knew how to get a decent story written
- 35:04and and done. But he had a very distinctive
- 35:07style of Flash Gordon desk stuff and I yeah, I think David
- 35:13Whittaker writes these two stories brilliantly, his dark
- 35:18like, okay I can do of a metaphor.
- 35:20I do have a metaphor from Deep Space 9, when they invade the
- 35:24intendant from these. First nine says, you know,
- 35:27violence is a Precision instrument, you know, it's a
- 35:29scalpel not a club. Well, with Terry Nation.
- 35:32The Daleks are a club with David Whittaker up.
- 35:34There are scalpel, they're cunning and there, sly.
- 35:38And that's what's great about these stories that yeah, that's
- 35:41brilliant. Well I love about the too dark,
- 35:43David Whittaker. Dalek story is he does something
- 35:45new with them. Yeah, you know, the Daleks are,
- 35:49I mean, yes, they evolved a bit over the first few.
- 35:51Terry Nation stories, because obviously, originally, they
- 35:55weren't supposed to be a recurring villain, so then he
- 35:57turned them into these spacefaring.
- 35:59Conquering, Exterminating monsters rather than the annex
- 36:04terrified survivors of a nuclear war stuck in their bunker.
- 36:11But once he's done that, they are in every other story that he
- 36:15writes a universal, conquering, Exterminating Force even when
- 36:21they're like flirting with politics and the darks mask fun.
- 36:23They just want it. So they can have that call.
- 36:26So I can hold the whole of the universe to Ransom, you know,
- 36:29it's like it ain't staff, is it? You know, where as here?
- 36:34Yeah he does devious coming. I mean, putting them at a
- 36:38disadvantage. At the beginning of power of the
- 36:40Daleks was was a masterstroke because that gave us a whole
- 36:43new. View of them.
- 36:45So and then just seeing them as like, the kiddie dialects in
- 36:48this play and trains. Oh, yes, do you see Jason?
- 36:55I'm gonna be in town of all during that episode, I shall
- 36:58look forward to it. Jay Well look, this is where we
- 37:03are ending part 1 of evil of the Daleks will be coming back
- 37:07refreshed but part 2 and so far wow this is a banger in it.
- 37:13Oh absolutely, absolutely loving every minute of this.
- 37:17Well, well will determine the day will be here but for you
- 37:21guys you won't know any different because you'll be
- 37:23listening to next episode in two days time.
- 37:24Anyway, so I will just say Jason, thank you very much.
- 37:30And until next time. Thank you.
- 37:32Joe.
